Hey there everyone! I'm here with the next chapter for you all!
Before we get into it, I just want to say that I think going forward, the updates for this story will be posted on Thursday, like I already do with Whatever Comes Next. That seems to be what'll work best for me with my schedule right now, and I'd rather just go ahead and change it instead of stressing every week trying to get something to you all on Monday, or having you guys wait around to see if I'm able to post. I know things keep changing with me and these stories, and I'm so sorry for that, but I really am trying my best. And trying to find what works best for me, to where I'm able to still post things for you all.
So yes, moving forward it'll still be every other week updates with this story, but my update day for both stories will be on Thursdays. I hope you understand!
But back to this, I hope you guys enjoy this chapter. There's a scene in here I know at least a few of you have been waiting on, so hopefully you like it. Thanks for reading and I'll see you all next time!
***UPDATE 3/8: Hey guys, just wanna let you all know that there won't be an update this week. If you read Whatever Comes Next, you might've seen me talking about how busy I am with work this past week. And, unfortunately, that hasn't changed as I am finishing up a stretch of working ten days in a row, and then after one day off I work another five, so I don't have much time right now. I wasn't able to get anything written this past week and I'm sorry for that, but hopefully I'll be able to get something posted soon. I hope you all are having a good week and I'll see you next time!
Chapter Two Hundred and Six
'Caity wanted me to send this to you, said she and Sof miss their Daddy very much!'
Casey smiled at the photo in front of him while sitting at his desk in his office, the image of his two daughters flooding his chest with warmth as he looked over their smiling faces. His mom had sent the picture just a few minutes ago, telling him that they were still at the park with Ramon and Camila, and by the looks of it they were all having a wonderful time. Especially Caitlyn and Sofia, Matt able to see the pure joy on his babies' faces. A sight he would never get tired of.
And over these last couple weeks it was something he'd seen a lot of as well, as the girls were over the moon about getting time with all of their grandparents.
In the past two weeks since Nancy's arrival to Chicago, the Casey and Dawson family had spent a lot of quality time together, Caity and Sof spending almost every moment they weren't with their parents with their grandparents, and they were all loving it. Whether it was just time at the house, or at Ramon and Camila's, or if the grandparents decided to take them somewhere; it never mattered, wherever they were they always managed to have a great time. Which was something Matt was grateful for, as all he wanted was for his daughters to have a good relationship with his mom. For them to know their grandmother, and get that quality time with her like they did with Ramon and Camila.
And hopefully, in the future, their other little girl would be able to experience that same thing.
Drawing in a deep breath, Matt grinned at the photo for a few more minutes before he saved it to his phone and then went back to work, knowing that no matter how much he would rather be spending this time thinking about his family, there were tasks he needed to complete sooner rather than later. Tasks like the paperwork in front of him, having to do with a call Jemma and Anderson had gone on earlier in the morning.
From what the Chief knew, it had started out relatively normal. They were called out to a person in distress, someone who they later found out to be close to overdosing. Which, unfortunately, wasn't unusual around here. But while they were helping him, from what Matt was able to piece together there were a few other men who came up and robbed the rig. Taking whatever drugs they could find, while also threatening his medics with a gun.
It had been scary, and a little hard for both Norris and Anderson to shake off; understandably so. But at the end of the day, they were both okay and felt up to working. No one had gotten hurt, and past a mountain of paperwork he now had to handle, 61 and the rest of the house were just trying to move on from it. Which felt like the best course of action for everyone involved.
But it was a little harder for Matt, at least right now, as he was having to deal with the administrative side of it. Having to go through his paramedics' statements, and account for what all was taken. Having to write up report after report of what had happened, even though all he knew was the secondhand accounts of the accident after he got the message that something had happened. Almost his entire morning had been spent going over this one call, and it had been a little heavy for him to deal with. Not only because it was his medics, but because in the back of his mind, all he was thinking about was how that could've been Gabby.
How that had been Gabby.
This wasn't the first time their rig had been held up like this, it wasn't even the first time Jemma had experienced it. But that didn't make it any easier for them to go through, and it certainly didn't help Matt's side of things either. Not when he knew this was the job his wife signed up for, and how in just a few months she'd be back out there putting her life on the line every single day, much like he did.
Those weren't the easiest of thoughts for him, but they were ones he was trying to push aside from the time being. And instead focus on how grateful he was that Gabby hadn't been the one in that position earlier today.
Maybe it was selfish, maybe it made him a bad Chief, but at the end of the day he couldn't bring it in himself to care. He would always be glad to know that Gabby was safe, no matter the circumstances. Not that the lives of his current paramedics weren't important, because they are; especially where Jemma was concerned. Matt would likely never forgive himself if something happened to her under his command. But when it came down to it, it wasn't the same thing as something happening to his family. There wasn't anyone, or anything, he'd put in front of them; their lives, his wife's safety- that was the most important thing to him. And it always would be.
So regardless of how hard this morning had been, and how much it shook his medics, there was a small part of him that was relieved to know that for as bad as it had been, that Gabby wasn't the one who had to go through it.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say that looks like the face of someone regretting this job."
The deep, yet familiar voice broke through his thoughts before Casey looked over to his doorway to find Boden standing there, his presence unexpected, though not unwelcome as Matt began to smile wide.
"Yeah, that looks more like the Casey I know." Wallace added on with a chuckle, taking a step further inside.
"Boden, hey. What are you doing here?" Matt asked, disbelief evident in his voice as he pushed himself up from his seat and began to make his way across the room, the two coming together a few feet inside his office.
"I was in the neighborhood." He spoke lightly before the men connected in a hug, Casey patting over his back until they separated. "Thought I'd come by and see how things were going… Though I know I picked a pretty bad day."
Matt grimaced for a moment before nodding him in, Boden moving towards one of the chairs there while Casey walked back to his seat behind the desk. "Yeah, it's a bit of an off day. Rough morning."
"I heard." Boden responded shortly, not needing any further explanation. "But I saw Norris and Anderson on the way in, they seem to be doing okay."
"They are, yeah… Handled it well, all things considered. Luckily everyone's okay." Casey replied, the men settling into their seats while Matt crossed his hands over his stomach. "And if anything, I know a visit from you is sure to lift everyone's spirits… I must've missed the cheering when you came in." He teased, prompting Boden to laugh.
"Gotta say, I was a little surprised you didn't hear the commotion. But you seemed to be pretty caught up in your work there." Boden said, gesturing down towards the paperwork between them.
"Yeah, well. Life of a Chief… the paperwork never ends. You know that well."
"I do, I do." Wallace told him, the men sharing another smile as Casey looked over him for a moment, before letting out a heavy breath.
"I'm not gonna lie, it feels a little weird with me being on this side of the desk." Matt admitted, Boden chuckling once more as he relaxed down into his seat.
"Still? Even after all this time?" Boden goaded, while Matt simply laughed. "It's been a year."
"I know… Doesn't always feel like it, though."
"Well, I can understand that, too. Time's an easy thing to let get away from you." Boden replied with a soft breath, Matt taking in his words for a lingering second before he nodded. "So, how's the job treating you? You still liking it?" He asked, shifting the conversation as Casey gave him a small smile.
"I am, I love it. Even with all the headaches it may give me." He joked around, pulling another smile from his former boss. "But really, it was the best thing for me. Maybe the best decision I've ever made, career wise. For me and for the family, we're all really happy with it."
"I'm glad to hear it, Casey." Boden spoke proudly, the gleam in his eye unmistakable. "And, not that I expected any differently, but I've heard nothing but wonderful things about you around the department… Everyone's very impressed with 51's newest Chief." He told him, Matt's back relaxing as the small smile on his face widened.
"Eh, you can't believe everything you hear." Casey played it off, though by his expression alone Boden knew how much his words meant to him.
"Fair point. But with this, I'd say it's probably true." Wallace responded, the men then sharing a knowing look before they continued on with their conversation.
"What about you? How's your job going?" Matt asked him.
"It's going very well, I'm really enjoying it." He told him, causing Casey to nod.
"And Donna and Terrence? How are they?"
"Perfect." Boden replied easily. "They're both doing great, we're all great."
"That's great, Boden."
"And how are your girls?" Wallace was quick to ask him, Matt's face almost instantly lighting up before he smiled.
"Oh they're great." He said lightly. "They're crazy, but great. Just the best girls in the world." Matt spoke with a proud edge to his voice.
"And they're getting pretty old, huh?"
"Too old… Caity's seven already, and here in just a few weeks Sof will be three." Matt breathed out, while Boden shook his head.
"Now that I can't believe… Sofia's three already."
"You're telling me, it's insane to think about. Sometimes it feels like she was just born, and now we have the most adorable, and sassiest, little toddler running around." Matt added with a laugh, one Boden soon matched.
"So she still has Dawson's personality?" Wallace joked, earning a sly grin from Casey.
"That, and then some." He admitted. "But I love it. She's exactly like her Momma, and so is Caity."
"I can only imagine what it's like to have three Dawson's in one house." Boden continued to tease lightheartedly. "That's a determined group of girls right there."
"It definitely is."
"And you're about to have one more." He added on pointedly, as Matt's smile widened even further. "I spent some time with Dawson out in the common room, it seems like little baby Casey will be here sooner rather than later. Cause Dawson surely is looking…"
"Pregnant." Matt finished for him, a subtle look crossing Boden's face before he nodded. "Very pregnant."
"She is, but she looks great." Boden complemented. "How is she doing?"
"She's doing well, yeah. Handling it like a champ… She's exhausted a lot of the time, and this little girl surely is taking it out of her but you'd never know it. She's been great."
"Sounds like Dawson… How far along is she now?"
"34 weeks." Matt answered, as Boden's eyebrows raised. "I know. It's crazy to me, too." He added on with a chuckle. "But it's been so good, this pregnancy has been pretty smooth. Especially compared to the last one, and we're all so excited. Gabby's excited, the girls are so happy about having a little sister… It's all just been perfect so far."
"That's great, Casey. It really is." Boden responded sincerely. "So you're ready to be a father of three?"
Matt let out a sigh, causing Wallace to laugh once more before they both smiled. "Hardly, but I'm still excited… It all feels like it's kind of going by so fast, though. A lot faster than it did with Sof."
"Still a lot to do, yeah?"
"Definitely. There's still things we need to buy, and put together. We still haven't figured out a name. We do have another doctor's appointment here in a few days, where we're gonna get all the birth plan stuff figured out so that'll be good. And I did finally get our room ready for a newborn, which is something at least." Matt ranted out while Boden watched on in amusement.
"Sounds like that new dad stress doesn't go away even after your first kid." Boden replied with a playful smirk, one Matt chuckled at before shaking his head. "But it'll all be fine, Casey. There's no one more prepared for this than you and Dawson… Even if it's only about six weeks until she gets here. You two have raised two incredible, smart, loving little girls, and now you'll do that for a third. The rest of it doesn't matter." He spoke, his genuine words resonating with Matt as he took a moment to think over everything before ultimately nodding.
"Thank you, Boden." Matt responded softly, the men sharing one last smile before Wallace shifted in his seat.
"Of course, Casey. And you know I'm here if you need anything." Boden reminded him, seeing Casey nod before the older man glanced down towards his watch. "I hate to cut this short, but I probably should get going… I only had a little bit of time to stop in, I've got a meeting here soon."
"I'm glad you came by. Wish you could stay longer." Matt told him as they both stood up, Boden nodding in agreement. "You'll have to come back here soon, don't be a stranger, yeah?"
"I won't, Casey… And congratulations, again. With all of it."
Boden had just finished getting his words out when they were interrupted by the sound of quick little footsteps, Matt glancing behind Wallace to see Sofia running towards his office, the sight of her causing Casey to smile instantly even though he hadn't been expecting her.
"Daddy!" She shrieked happily when she came into the room, the toddler running straight for her father.
"Hi princess, what are you doing here?" He asked while bending down to pick her up just as she got to him, Boden watching on with a happy grin when Casey scooped the little girl up into his arms. Though Matt couldn't be sure, he had a feeling that his mom had decided to stop by after their visit to the park, which was something he'd never complain about.
"Come see Daddy!" Sofia repeated herself, Matt letting out a soft laugh before peppering her face with kisses.
"Well, I'm so glad you came to see Daddy, I missed you." Casey told her, Sofia giggling wildly while she clung to her father.
"Man, she's gotten so big." Boden breathed out after the family's greeting, Matt grinning his way before nodding.
"She has, she's my big girl. Aren't you, baby?" Matt asked her, Sofia merely smiling before she dug her head into his neck. "Yeah, you're Daddy's girl huh? Is your sister here, too?"
"Sissy and Mommy." She answered him in the only way the still-two year old knew how, Matt smiling softly as he understood her words perfectly.
"Sissy's out there with Mommy? Well how about we go and see them, that sound good?" He asked her, Sofia nodding against him before wrapping her small arms around his neck. "Alright baby, let's go." Matt spoke, before glancing back up towards Boden. "Want us to walk you out?" He questioned with a laugh, Boden smiling softly before he nodded.
"I would love that." He responded, the former Chief and current Chief giving one another one last smile before they headed for the door to get back out to the common room.
Gabby let out a soft sigh as she finished applying lotion to her arms, the soft sound of the television playing in the background helping to alleviate the quiet she was surrounded by while she waited for her husband to join her in bed. It wasn't too late in the evening, just a little past eight, but these days that was about the time Gabby was ready to go to bed. Especially as she got later and later into this pregnancy, it was as if she could never get enough sleep.
But first, she just needed her husband.
"Sof is finally down."
His voice filtered into the room seconds before he stepped in, Gabby glancing over to see him come into their bedroom, already stretching out his neck while he stood there in his pajama pants and t-shirt.
"It took an extra story, but she fell back asleep." He added on, Gabby smiling softly before she nodded.
"Well, I can't blame her for wanting to stay up… You do tell the best stories." She reminded him, Matt smiling softly while he continued towards their bed.
"You're not wrong there, I've pretty much perfected the voices."
"You absolutely have." She told him, Matt nodding back at her before he sat down on their bed, angling himself to where he could see her. "But I'm glad they're both asleep, because that means now we can sleep."
"Yes dear." He replied with a small smile, before a look of realization crossed his features. "Oh, I meant to ask- did you ever hear back from Jemma?"
Gabby's face softened at his clear concern for their friend, before she gave him a nod, knowing Matt had been curious as to how Jemma was holding up after what happened on their last shift. Even though Gabby had checked in with her often, and stayed with her as much as she could while she was at the firehouse, she'd taken to keeping up with her frequently through texts as well, just to make sure she was still doing okay. And, thankfully, she was.
"Yeah, she's good babe." Gabby assured him, seeing her husband mull over her words before he nodded. "Her and Anderson both are, they're doing okay."
"Good, I'm glad." He replied softly before reaching out to rub her arm. "Now let's get my baby mama to bed." He added on with a smirk, Gabby matching his look before she nodded.
"Mhmm. But as your baby mama, there's actually something I want to talk to you about first." She transitioned quickly, Matt raising his brows before letting out a laugh.
"Uh oh." He played along, earning an eye roll from his wife. "What did I do?"
"You didn't do anything, at least not yet." She challenged back, the two smiling at one another before she continued. "But no, I've just been thinking a lot lately about how I think it's time we need to figure out her name." Gabby told him, her hand subconsciously moving to rest over her stomach while she spoke, seeing the way Casey's face softened. "In just a few weeks she's gonna be here, and I don't want her name to be something we come up with at the last minute. Or rush into… I want it to be special."
"I want that too, baby." He agreed softly, letting his hand rub over her arm. "And you're right, I think we should figure it out… I honestly just don't know where to start." Matt continued on, before Gabby slowly started to bite down on her bottom lip, that alone telling him there was more she wasn't saying. "...But it seems like you might?" He prompted, Gabby pausing for a moment before she shrugged. "Did you find a name you liked?"
"I've had a lot of ideas, here and there. But I think I've finally found one that sounds right. And that keeps sticking out to me."
"I'm all ears." He replied supportively, Gabby drawing in a breath before she nodded.
"Okay, but before I tell you remember you can say no. If you hate it, or don't think it's good, tell me. Cause I want this to be something we both love." She prefaced, Matt chuckling softly while giving her arm a loving squeeze.
"I know babe, now what is it?"
Gabby pursed her lips together, her eyes tracing over him before she eventually spoke up.
"...Liliana."
His lips parted the second he heard the name, the short sentence racing through his mind as he took in what she had said. As he tried to place what it would be like for that to be their daughter's name, for their little girl to go by that for the rest of her life. And while he had never once considered that name for her, he'd be lying if he said he didn't like the way it felt. Especially when his eyes moved back down towards Gabby's stomach.
"We could call her Lily for short." She continued on, Gabby relaxing more and more when she saw the smile on his face continue to grow.
"Lily." He murmured, his eyes locked on his wife's belly while she nodded, bringing her hand up to rest over his cheek.
"Lily." She repeated softly. "And we'd have our girls- Caity, Sof, and Lily." Gabby told him, the tears forming in his eyes evident as she could tell he was liking the name more and more with every passing second. "Then I remembered how before Sofia was born, you liked the name Gracie… So I was thinking we could make that her middle name. Grace."
Casey's hand moved to rest over her stomach while she spoke, the warmth he felt beneath his touch causing his smile to widen as he couldn't stop the rush of emotions swirling within him. Because a part of him knew, in that moment, that they had finally found it.
They had found their daughter's name.
"Liliana Grace Casey." He spoke quietly, just loud enough for Gabby to hear as she gave him a watery smile. "...Our Lily."
A few tears escaped down her cheek, Gabby then nodding as Matt finally regained eye contact with her, seeing her nod up and down quickly while he moved closer to her.
"Our Lily." She got out just before his lips were on hers, the two moving together passionately while Matt kept his palm against her belly, wanting to be as close to both his wife and his daughter as he possibly could.
They stayed connected until air became an issue, Gabby having to pull back first before Matt rested his forehead down against hers.
"So you like it?" She asked after a beat of silence, Matt letting out a soft chuckle before he stole another swift kiss.
"I love it." He told her before kissing her once more. "I love her name, and I love her. I love you." He continued, giving his wife multiple quick kisses before finally pulling back. "It's perfect… The perfect name for our perfect daughter."
A few more unstoppable tears rolled down Gabby's face before she nodded, her hand clinging to him as he shuffled his way further down the bed, where he could be eye-level with their girl.
He didn't say anything at first, Matt just lifting up Gabby's shirt before placing his hand back against her stomach, the father almost immediately feeling her movement inside her mom's belly.
"Hi Lily… hi baby girl." He whispered, Gabby not bothering to stop the fresh tears falling from her eyes as Matt shared this moment with their daughter. "I know it took us a while, but your Momma and I, we finally found a name for you. And in just a few short weeks you'll be here, with us and your sisters, and we're so excited to meet you." He spoke in hushed tones, rubbing his palm gently along her skin while talking to their little girl.
"We love you so much, our sweet girl… Our Lily. And we can't wait for you to be here with us."
