AN: So I had planned to write and post several chapters around Christmas but my grandmother passed a day or so after Christmas and I had no motivation. I've gotten a little motivation but since heading back to school I don't have much time. My grandmother always encouraged me to write since it's something I always enjoyed and that motivates me even more.
May 31st
I let out a yawn as I blinked my eyes open. The canvas of the wagon blocked the sunlight from fully hitting me in the face. I slowly slid to the edge of the wagon and grabbed my boots, I slid them on before standing up.
The camp wasn't fully up and running but the usual suspects were awake, in the likes of Hosea, Pearson, and Miss Grimshaw. Mary-Beth and Tilly's cots were empty, along with John, Charles, and Javier's.
I pulled my gun belt on and buckled it before grabbing my satchel and swinging it on and then I reached back into the wagon and grabbed my hat before walking towards the table in the middle of the camp.
"Morning Andrew," Hosea said looking up from his book.
"Hosea," I muttered while taking a seat beside him.
"Tired," he asked, looking from the book to me.
I nodded before I yawned, covering my mouth with my arm as I tossed my hat on the table.
"Hey kid," John said, taking a seat beside me.
"Hey John."
"You know that train Mary-Beth told you about a few weeks back," John asked.
I turned to him and quirked an eyebrow, "Yeah, why?"
"I've been sniffing around some and found out the time it's coming through. Was wondering if you wanna do it with me. I ain't got a full plan yet but I'm thinking it'll be a good job," John explained.
I nodded as I rubbed my chin as I thought it over.
"We'll need a few more guys," I thought aloud, "Also something to get the train to stop."
"I was thinking Arthur and maybe Charles or Javier," John replied, "We could use something heavy, like an oil wagon?"
I nodded, "Sounds good. When's it due?"
"Day after tomorrow," John answered.
I nodded, "Alright so we'll need to get everything ready by tomorrow night."
John nodded.
"Alright I'll talk to Charles and see if he wants in," I said standing up and grabbing my hat.
"And I'll talk to Arthur about the wagon," John said, doing the same.
"Hopefully you won't mess the job up," Hosea said, looking up at me and grinning.
I smiled and shook my head as I sat my hat on my head before walking away, Hosea's laughter trailing behind me.
Charles stood near the entrance of the camp, his sawed-off shotgun resting in one hand as he walked around.
"Charles," I said, coming to a stop beside him.
He turned to look at me before turning back to the road, "What is it?"
"John and I got a job coming up and we need an extra man or two."
"What kind of job," Charles asked, turning to me.
"A train stick up, heading through Scarlett Meadows the day after tomorrow. Supposed to have some rich tourists on it, we're getting an oil wagon to stop the train," I answered.
Charles nodded, "Alright, I'm in."
I nodded, "'Kay. I'll let John know. I'll find you if anything important comes up."
"Alright."
I turned and started back to the camp, I saw Arthur climb onto his horse and start towards the road. I turned to see John stop beside Jack and Abigail's tent and ruffle Jack's hair.
"I assume Arthur's heading to get the wagon," I asked as John walked over to me.
He nodded, "Yeah. He said he's in. What about Charles?"
"Charles is in."
John nodded as he scratched his stubbly jaw, "Alright. I told Arthur to hide the wagon at a little broken down shack near Dewberry Creek."
I nodded, Strauss had thankfully given me the map he had originally loaned me. I knew where that was now and I could actually see where we were and the towns that weren't in the game now.
There were three new towns in Ambarino now, two more in New Hanover, two in West Elizabeth, two in Lemoyne, and three in New Austin. The states looked a lot larger than I remember them being in the game. Maybe I didn't know about this world as much as I thought.
"You okay," John asked, concern evident on his face.
I blinked and turned to him, "Yeah I'm fine."
John nodded before walking away. I headed over to Pearson's station and grabbed a few pieces of deer meat. I walked back over to the table and sat down, Javier and Sean now sitting there as well.
"What are you and Johnny Marston planning," Sean asked, taking a drink from a tin cup.
I looked up from the table as I continued chewing, "We got a job coming up."
Sean's face lit up like a kid on Christmas day, "You two need a guy?"
I shook my head, "We already got Arthur and Charles for it. Don't wanna take too many."
Sean shook his head, "Aw Arthur is getting up there in age he's not as good as he used to be. We all know I'm the better choice here."
I snorted while Javier chuckled as he coated some throwing knives in something. Hosea simply grinned as he continued to read.
Sean scoffed as he looked at the three of us, he stood up to walk away, "Ha, doubt all ya want. You know it's true."
I shook my head before turning to Javier, "What are you making?"
"Poisoned throwing knives. Helps make the kill quicker," Javier replied, as he coated the blade in a plant substance.
I nodded as I looked at the knives, "I guess that works."
Javier glanced up at me, "Wanna make a bet?"
"What kinda bet?"
"Five dollars to see who can hit a tree on a knot the most," Javier asked.
"I ain't even got any throwing knives," I countered.
"That's fine I got some spares I can give you," Javier said, pulling out another five knives and setting them on the table.
I looked from him to the knives, "Sure why not," I said grabbing the knives.
I stood up and followed Javier to a corner of the camp near the cliff. Jack was playing with a stick while Abigail was stitching something. I saw Sadie Adler drinking something as she stood at the edge looking out over the small valley.
"Mind if I get a few practice throws in? I haven't thrown any in a while."
Javier nodded, "Sure thing."
I grabbed one before taking a breath and slowly releasing it before I threw. The knife embedded into the tree. I pulled out another and took another breath before throwing the knife, it hung from the tree a few inches below the other.
I walked over to the tree and pulled the knives out, "I'm good now. How far back are we standing?"
"I say let's do ten paces and the best out of five to hit the closest to that knot," Javier suggested as he backed up from the tree.
"You go first," I said as I slid all but one knife into my back pocket.
Javier pulled out his own knife before rearing back and flinging the knife at the tree, it struck right below the knot.
I snorted, "I'm fixin' to lose five bucks."
Javier chuckled as I readied my stance and flung the knife, it sailed right of the knot just a inch or two farther than Javier's.
"One-zero," Javier said with a smirk.
I grinned and shook my head as we each pulled another knife out.
"You first," Javier said, spinning his knife through his fingers.
I nodded and turned towards the tree before throwing the knife. It landed on the knot just a half an inch or so from the middle.
Javier let out a breath and shook his head before throwing his knife, it landed on the edge of the knot.
"One-one," I said with a grin as I pulled out another knife.
After that Javier got closer the next two times, while I missed badly.
"Here," I said, handing him the five dollars.
We pulled our knives out of the tree and went our separate ways. Javier saying that he'd like to do it again.
"Mister Booker."
I turned to see Molly sitting beside the entrance to her and Dutch's tent. I could hear Dutch talking to somebody further in the camp.
"Miss O'Shea," I said tipping my hat, "Somethin' I can do for you?"
"I was wondering...well...never mind," she said, waving her hand in a dismissive way.
"Um...alright," I said, turning towards the camp.
"Mister Booker! How are you today sir," Dutch said walking over to me, a cigar in his hand.
"I'm fine Dutch. Getting ready to do a job," I said, stopping in front of the entrance to Dutch's tent.
"I heard, Sean decided that I was a worthy candidate for his complaints," Dutch said with a chuckle.
I grinned and shook my head, "Yeah we already have the guys we need to do the job I didn't figure we should take more than we need."
Dutch nodded, "Good idea. Sometimes you can bring too many men for a job and sometimes you can't bring enough."
I nodded, I needed something to eat, it looked as if it was a little before lunch.
A horse's gallop could be heard approaching the camp.
"Dutch! They got Micah," Lenny yelled as he rode into camp and jumped off of Maggie and sprinted over to us, "He's gonna be hanged in Strawberry!"
"It's okay son, breathe," Dutch said patting his shoulder as Lenny bent over trying to catch his breath.
"They...nearly lynched me," Lenny said between breathes, he slowly stood back up.
"Micah's in the sherriff's at Strawberry. 'N there's talk of hanging him," Lenny said looking between the two of us.
"He brought this on himself didn't he," I asked.
"Andrew," Dutch said disappointedly.
"No he's right Dutch," Lenny interjected, "Micah killed someone in cold blood."
Dutch let out a breath and looked to the ground, "Will you go get him?"
"I don't know Dutch," I said, rubbing my neck.
"I could ask Arthur to go but I don't think he will," Dutch said as he took a drag of his cigar.
"I can ask Charles, or Javier. Maybe one of them will go," I suggested.
Dutch nodded, "That could work. I need you to do it soon though. We don't know if he's goin' to be hung or not."
I nodded, "Alright."
Dutch looked to Lenny who was sitting at the camp table, "Take him into town. Get'em drunk. But no crazy business."
I grinned, "Course not."
I walked over to Lenny and patted him on the shoulder as I walked to the horses, "Come on."
"Where are we going," Lenny asked standing up.
"Valentine. I could use a good drink and I'm sure you could too," I answered as I put my saddle on Quinton.
"You ain't wrong," Lenny said, climbing onto Maggie.
"You alright," I asked as I saw a grimace cross his face.
"I'm beat," he answered as we rode at a slow trot towards the road, "First we get off the mountains and then that!"
"Why'd it take you guys three weeks to go scouting," I asked as we picked up into a canter onto the road.
"First we headed to Dover to see how it was, spent a week there. Then we headed to Strawberry, and been there for the past two weeks. Maggie had a bad shoe and I had to take a few days to get that fixed. But then a few days ago Micah met some guy he knew from years ago, they were both drunk and before I knew it Micah had shot the man. I tried to get us away but i wasn't able to, nearly got caught myself," Lenny explained as we reached the crest of a hill and Valentine came into view.
"Well your fine now. It's not like I'll kill somebody on main street," I said as we reached the outskirts of the town.
"Your gonna go get him right? I'll come with ya."
I shook my head, "Bad idea. You'll make it hard to just get near him. I'll get somebody else to go with me."
"Alright, if you say so."
We rounded the turn to main street and slowed to a trot. Townsfolk were hard at work in the streets. The building at the end of the street was starting to come together nicely.
"So even though we're getting some drinks we're not gonna go overboard right," Lenny asked as we climbed off our horses.
"Course just a few. Nothing to worry about," I said, patting his shoulder as we walked in. There weren't a ton of people inside but it wasn't bare either.
"Two beers," I said, placing the money on the counter.
"Please don't cause any trouble sir. It took quite a lot of money to get everything replaced," the bartender said, setting a beer in front of Lenny and I.
"Look, I was defending myself. It's not like I wanted to fuck your place up," I said before taking a swig of the beer.
Lenny chuckled as he looked from me to the bartender, "I'm sorry, what'd I miss?"
"My ass getting beat up, that's what," I said bitingly before taking another swig.
Lenny laughed as he took a swig, "This I gotta hear."
I looked over at him, he leaned against the counter and looked at me expectantly.
I sighed and took another swig, "Bill came into the saloon drunk, ran into someone and started a bar fight. Got into a fight with a few guys and kicked their asses and next thing I know I'm getting pinned to one of the posts and having the life choked out of me by some monster named Tommy. Luckily Javier saved me and then got his ass beat. Arthur ended up beating Tommy's ass though so he got his payback."
Lenny laughed and took a swig of his beer, "Well that's not happening today. Today we're gonna just enjoy ourselves," he said, holding his beer out.
I grinned and clinked mine against his before taking another drink.
"Another bartender," I said, setting the beer down.
"That's why I got the name Bulldog in scho-Saint Denis. Another whiskey my friend," I said, slamming the shot glass down on the counter as it was filled back up, "Thank ya."
I turned back to Lenny, "Anyway why-Lenny?"
Lenny was gone, "The hell? Where'd you go?"
I looked around the bar, I didn't see any dark skinned men. I stumbled forward and looked on the balcony.
"Lenny, you up there?"
Where the hell could he have wandered off to?
I slowly made it upstairs, "Lenny? Where ya at bud?"
I put the shot glass to my lips and gulped down the whiskey, letting out a hiss. I made it to the top of the balcony and turned, Lenny stood at the opposite end.
"Leeeeennnnnnnnnyyyyyyyyy!"
"Andrew! I was looking for you," Lenny said as he took a swig of his beer.
"I was looking for-whoa," I said before tripping right before I got to him. I fell into his legs and he fell on top of me. I bursted out laughing as the shot glass fell back to the floor below.
"Shit," I said as Lenny started laughing with me.
We just laid there for a bit as we slowly stopped laughing.
"Aw man."
I looked over at Lenny, "What?"
"I think I split my beer," he said, holding up the once full bottle and grinning.
I looked at the puddle of beer that was settling in and started to laugh again.
"So my cousin ended up chasing us to the next town," Lenny said as we began laughing.
"Dat's one way to stop her," I said, taking a swig of my beer.
I sighed and grinned as I stated out at the lively bar. When I didn't hear anything I turned to see Lenny gone again!
"L-Lenny? Where'd ya go," I asked as I stumbled to turn to look around.
I started towards the stairs to walk down. As I was making my way I bumped into someone, "My bad," I said as I fought to keep from falling.
"Oh your fine honey," said a sultry voice.
I turned to see the dark haired woman from the bar fight grinning at me. I gave her a small smile as I felt my cheeks get hot.
She smiled and leaned over to me, "Cat still got your tongue," she whispered into my ear.
I opened my mouth but nothing came out, she smiled at me and oh lord was it pretty.
"I'm looking for my friend," I blurted out.
"Well how about you and I go find a room and then after that I'll help you look," she said, flicking my hat upwards.
"Uh...okay," I said.
"Follow me," she said as she took my hand and started to guide me, thankfully at a speed I wasn't falling steadily.
"Holy shit," I said as I flopped back onto the bed, my breathing labored.
The lady who I now knew as Lucy laughed as she pulled her corset back on.
"Did ya like it," she asked with a grin.
"Is that even a question," I asked as I threw my legs over the edge of the bed and pulled my underwear and jeans back on.
She laughed softly and turned her back to me, "Mind helping me?"
I walked over, stumbling once, and grabbed the strings to the corset before tightening it slowly until I was told to stop before tying them off.
I reached down at the floor and picked up my shirt before looking at my stomach. Before I had arrived in this world I had a bit of flab and could be described as chubby however while I still had it, it was barely there now.
"You have a nice body but don't be all high and mighty about it," Lucy said whispering in my ear.
I grinned and threw my shirt over one shoulder and then the other, "Please, that's one of the last things I'd ever be."
As I tried to pull one of my arms through, my arm got stuck and I tried to wiggle it around but to no avail.
"Lucy," I said, turning my side to her.
She laughed and helped me fix my sleeve to pull my arm through. After that Lucy pulled on her dress as I buttoned up my shirt and pulled on my boots.
"Now where's my hat," I asked looking around the bed and nightstand but not seeing it anywhere, "Lucy have you-," a giggle interrupted me.
I looked over to see her standing there with her hands on her hips and her eyes narrowed to look tough. I chuckled and shook my head.
"Very scary," I said as I plucked the hat off her head and placed it back on mine.
"I know," she said smugly.
I grinned and grabbed the beer off the dresser only to find it was empty.
"Damn, well I gotta find Lenny anyway," I said as I turned back to Lucy, "How much do I owe you?"
She snorted in an unladylike manner as she walked over and fixed a button on my shirt, "This one is free of charge."
I looked from my shirt to her, she grinned and turned towards the door.
"Come on, we gotta find your friend," she said, holding the door open.
I walked out and turned towards the main room, Lucy closed the door and hung a card on the handle before following me.
"Where ya at Lenny," I muttered as I started down the steps looking around the crowded bar.
"Is that him," Lucy asked pointing towards the dark skinned man stumbling towards me.
"Andrew! Where ya been," Lenny said as he stumbled into me and nearly caused me to fall like I did to him earlier.
"I had some business to do," I said slapping some money, "Whiskey."
"I'll see you later," Lucy whispered in my ear.
I turned to her and leaned back slightly as she pressed her lips to mine in a small kiss before she patted my shoulder and walked off.
I grabbed the freshly prepared whiskey and took a deep swig.
I looked over at Lenny who was grinning like a mad man, "Business huh?"
I smiled, "Shut up," I said, taking a sip of the whiskey.
"How was she," he asked, taking a swig of his beer.
"Doesn't matter," I answered before turning towards the piano as I heard a familiar tune I heard from the game come on, "Shit that piano player is good."
Lenny shook his head and took a swig of his beer as he started to walk over to the piano with me right behind.
I let out a groan as I felt the sweet release of Mother Nature taking it's course. I sighed and shivered before zipping my jeans back up and turning to walk back into the saloon.
"Hey bastard. You remember us," a voice said behind me.
I turned to see two guys trying to look imposing but were steadily swaying. I couldn't tell exactly due to the poor lighting but judging from the voice it sounded like the men that tried robbing me a few weeks back.
"Um Oscar the Grouch and his trash," I said, chuckling to myself.
They both got confused looks on their faces, "The hell does that even mean," the one on the left asked.
"You decide," I said with a shrug as I turned towards the back door to the saloon.
I felt one grab me in a headlock and pull me back, I started to fall but was held up by the other one.
Before I could do anything else I felt a fist plunge into my stomach, it wasn't very powerful but it still hurt and knocked the breath out of me.
Several punches to my chest and stomach followed, each one knocking the breath out of me.
"How long does it take to piss," I heard Lenny ask as he opened the door.
Before the man holding me in a headlock could do anything a bottle crashed into his head, he went limp and fell to the ground. I pulled the man's arms off of me and bulldozed into the other man, driving the man into the ground.
"Doesn't feel so good now does it," I asked as I sent a fist square into his nose, I felt a crunch as it connected.
I sent another into his jaw and then one more into his stomach before climbing off of him and grabbing him by his hair as I dragged him towards a trough at the front of the saloon.
"Shut it," I said as the man feebly tried to escape.
I pulled him to his knees and grabbed his head before shoving it in and holding him there. After twenty seconds or so I pulled him up, he let out a gasp before his head was shoved back under.
"See how easily I could kill you," I said as I pulled him back.
Suddenly I felt a boot connect with my balls, I let out a long groan and let the man go as I leaned against the hitching post.
I heard Lenny cracking up as I felt my nausea rise and bile come out my mouth. I groaned weakly as I put most of my weight on the post.
"Here," Lenny said, his breathing labored from laughing, holding out a beer.
I looked over at him and grabbed the bottle at the neck and took a swig. I looked back over at him grinning and started to chuckle eventually that led to loud laughing.
"That's them right there," I heard someone say walking towards us.
I turned to see the man I had tried drowning coming down the street with two other men. I could see a star glistening on each man's chest.
"Shit," I said as Lenny was tackled to the ground, I chucked the bottle at the other man and turned to run into the alley only to stumble and go face first into a post.
I fell back and darkness enveloped me.
AN:
Not gonna lie this was one of the funniest chapters I've ever written.
The rest of this is just replying to questions, you can skip since it doesn't have important information.
Blaze1992: Growing up I was raised around guns and my grandparents owned several that had been passed down. I distinctly remember a revolver that they owned from my great-great-great grandfather who served in the Civil War, it was a Colt Model from 1860 I believe. I've managed to fire a few of them and seeing as how the character is a representation of me with a few tweaks I imagine him being the same way. Sorry for such a lengthy reply but I felt it was necessary.
Teadrinker14: I could make that happen but I don't want to force it if it doesn't fit the chapter, whenever it happens, but I am flattered you stayed up so late to read the entire story.
Sandford9687: It was Money Lending and Other Sins III if I'm remembering right but don't worry the MC isn't going to die like that. I fully believe that if Downes hadn't spit in Arthur's mouth Arthur wouldn't have contracted TB.
