Sitting quietly, Caitlin half listened to Sherlock and John talk about the case. Looking out the window of the taxi, her forehead furrowed as she watched London fly by. Her mind was going a mile a minute. She knew it wouldn't take long until Greg found her sister's case file. She knew she should have said something, but her thoughts had been so jumbled when she had found Elaine that she just couldn't make herself talk about it. Continuing to stare silently outside, she didn't notice that the two men had stopped talking.
Sherlock and John had been bickering about something unimportant before they both noticed Caitlin's silence. Once they'd looked from each other to Caitlin and back, John started to say something, but stopped when Sherlock held up a hand. Caitlin was obviously lost in thought and most likely had forgotten that they were even there. Realizing what she must be thinking about, the two remained quiet for a moment until the taxi came to a stop. Paying the driver, John climbed out and waited for Sherlock and Caitlin to follow. Placing a hand on her arm, Sherlock murmured,
"Caitlin."
Looking to Sherlock with a small smile, Caitlin hummed,
"Hmm? Yes Sherlock?"
Pushing her hair back behind her ear, Caitlin met Sherlock's eyes. Though she tried to hide her hesitance, it was quite apparent to the man beside her. Deciding not to comment on that deduction Sherlock just stated,
"We're here."
Climbing out of the car, Sherlock held his hand out to Caitlin. Helping her out, Sherlock moved to let go, but looked back when she tightened her grip. Glancing down, Caitlin just grinned before threading her fingers through his. Quirking his lips up, Sherlock gave her a playful eye roll before they followed John into New Scotland Yard.
"I'm here."
Lestrade looked up at Sherlock's exclamation. While walking toward the three, Lestrade noticed Sherlock had Caitlin's hand in his. Grinning, he decided not to say anything at the moment, but definitely would later.
"We just received the overnight security footage of the entire building. I thought you might want to take a look."
With a quick nod of his head, Sherlock dropped Caitlin's hand in order to pull off his jacket and followed Lestrade to an empty conference room. While John and Sherlock set up camp in front of the television, Lestrade pulled Caitlin aside.
"Can I talk to you for a moment Caitlin?"
"Sure Greg."
Following him into his office she sat quietly as he closed his door and took a seat across from her. Not saying anything, Greg looked at Caitlin for a moment. With that look, she immediately knew what he wanted to talk to her about.
Sighing, Caitlin glanced at him before her shoulders sagged in defeat.
"I know! I know I should have told you about my sister!"
"Why didn't you?"
"I was so startled to find Elaine that way. It just brought back so many memories. I just couldn't bring myself to talk about it."
Looking down, she paused.
"I'm sorry Greg."
Smiling softly at her, Greg reached across the desk to pat her hand.
"It's alright Caitlin. Just keep me filled in next time, hmm? I'm your friend and I can't help you if you keep things from me."
Smiling back Caitlin responded,
"Ok."
Slipping quietly into the conference room, Caitlin took a seat next to Sherlock. Figuring it would probably be awhile, Caitlin pulled a book out of her purse and started to read. It hadn't even been five minutes when Sherlock yelled "STOP!"
Jumping, she looked over at the two.
"Rewind that John."
Raising an eyebrow, John complied before shrugging at Caitlin's curious look.
"There, right there. Pause it."
The screen froze and the other two watched Sherlock gaze at it quietly, his eyebrows drawn together.
"You see that?"
As Sherlock pointed to the screen, John asked
"No, what is it?"
"Oh for Christ's sake, LOOK John!"
As curiosity won out, Caitlin stood to look at what had enthralled Sherlock so much. Dropping her book, Caitlin released a small terrified squeak. John and Sherlock watched as Caitlin's hands flew to her mouth, her eyes wide in fear.
She was looking at footage from her office, but that wasn't what scared her so much. Sitting in the middle of her desk was a small music box. She had given it to her sister when they were children. How did he even-? Caitlin stumbled and Sherlock reached out and caught her arm before she could fall.
"Caitlin you're as white as a sheet! What's wrong?"
She couldn't answer John's question. She had to get out of this room. She had to-
"I think I might be sick."
Yanking free of Sherlock's grasp, Caitlin bolted from the room. Looking at Sherlock, John asked,
"What was that about?"
Sherlock continued to stare at the screen, before responding,
"That box on the desk in this video belonged to Caitlin's sister obviously. It's a message."
Caitlin had made it to the bathroom just in time. After staggering out of the stall, she managed to reach the sink before turning the water on. Closing her eyes and scooping the icy water into her hands, she leaned down to splash her face. Shuddering, Caitlin began to pat her face dry as several thoughts tumbled around her head. How? How was that possible? Tossing the paper towel in the trash she opened the door and stepped out into the hall only to be met by Sherlock. He was leaning against the opposite wall, hands tucked behind him. Looking up and meeting her eyes he asked
"Are you alright?"
Caitlin worried her lower lip with her teeth before letting out a breath. Closing her eyes for a moment, she was silent before replying.
"Not exactly."
Pushing off the wall Sherlock came over to stand next to her. The two were silent as they began to walk back to the main office when Caitlin heard a low,
"It was your sister's, wasn't it?"
"Yes. I gave her that music box when we were little."
The two halted for a moment. Facing each other, Sherlock's expression hardened. Meeting her eyes he stated,
"He's trying to send you a message."
"Well it's bloody well working! He's scaring the shit out of me!"
Caitlin let out what sounded almost like a growl, clenching and unclenching her hands.
Sherlock just stated matter-of-factly,
"Don't let him."
Caitlin's expression turned angry.
"Don't let him? DON'T LET HIM?! Sherlock this person killed my sister and my boss! Now he's after me! He left my sister's music box as a message! He's taunting me! And I'm just supposed to ignore it?!"
Sherlock's reply was stated as if someone had asked him if the sky was blue.
"Yes."
Caitlin couldn't help it. She exploded.
"You are insane!"
Caitlin stared Sherlock down, angry and frightened tears filling her eyes. Some even started to roll down her cheeks. She watched as Sherlock's expression softened for a moment. Caitlin sniffled breaking their gaze. She couldn't look at him when she cried. It made her feel almost….ashamed. Caitlin was surprised however when in a rare show of sentimentality Sherlock brushed a few tears away with his fingertips before stating softly,
"I don't want it to bother you because I want you to feel safe."
He paused for a moment before nearly whispering,
"I've already told you that I won't let anything happen to you."
Rushing forward into his arms, Caitlin hugged him and grinned softly into his chest when he didn't seem to know what to do. He finally put his arms awkwardly around her until they broke the embrace a few seconds later. Standing on tiptoe, Caitlin placed a light kiss on Sherlock's cheek before whispering a thank you. Wiping away the last of her tears, Caitlin and Sherlock started walking back to the office once more.
