Chapter Four: Shadows of the Past

Aang and Toph descended from the middle ring of Ba Sing Se into the neglected lower ring. The streets were grittier, the air felt heavier, and every step they took seemed to echo in the narrow alleys. Toph led the way, sure-footed as always, despite the crumbling roads beneath them.

Aang glanced around, taking in the disrepair. "You sure this is the right place? Feels like the city just forgot about this part."

Toph smirked slightly. "People up top tend to ignore what's underneath. Just because they don't see it, doesn't mean it's not there."

Eventually, they arrived at a rundown apartment building. The door hung loosely on its hinges, and the windows were covered in grime. Toph knocked sharply three times.

The door creaked open a few inches, and Aang's breath caught as he recognized the woman standing there. It had been years since their paths had crossed, and the last time he saw her, she was nothing more than a hollow puppet, brainwashed by the Dai Li. She was worn now, but the vacant look in her eyes had been replaced by something harder—like someone who'd been through too much but hadn't given up yet.

"Jodee?" Aang asked quietly, still remembering her from the day he helped free her from the Dai Li's control.

She stiffened slightly at the name and shook her head. "No… that's not me anymore. I go by Kaili now," she said, her voice low and rough.

Aang noticed the small tremble in her hands and the way she avoided eye contact. He could see the toll life had taken on her—the street had not been kind.

"Kaili," Toph interjected gently, "we need some information. We're looking for Azula—Fire Nation princess."

Kaili's eyes darted to Toph, recognition settling in. "Probably the Jaded… they're bad news. They've got people hooked on Jactus all over the lower ring. Word is, they're holding onto someone important—someone they've got completely strung out."

She paused, uncertainty flickering across her face. "I don't know much more than that," she admitted. "But I can give you an address."

Without another word, Kaili stepped back into her apartment, leaving Aang and Toph waiting in the damp, musty air. A few moments later, she returned with a crumpled scrap of paper and handed it to Toph.

"Be careful," she warned. "The Jaded… they don't mess around."

Aang's expression softened as he took in her ragged appearance. He reached for his pouch, but Toph quickly grabbed his wrist before he could pull out any money.

Kaili noticed, and for the first time, her gaze met Aang's. "Don't," she said, her voice firm but not unkind. "I'm clean now. Toph's helped me stay that way for a year, but… if I have anything extra, I don't trust myself to keep it."

Aang felt a pang of guilt but nodded slowly, retracting his hand. "I'm glad you're on the mend," he said softly.

Kaili nodded once before retreating back into the shadows of her apartment, the door closing with a soft click behind her.

Toph slipped the paper into her pocket and turned to Aang. "Let's go. The sooner we find Azula, the better."

Together, they moved deeper into the slums, the shadows growing longer as they followed the path Kaili had laid out for them.
