Happy came off the elevator with the pizza she picked up and then heard the excited voices and looked down the hall and saw a number of medical people rushing into Paige and Walter's room. Her eyes went wide as a cold chill ran down her back and she began running. She slid the last five feet and entered the room. Ralph was standing there as Cabe had his arms around his shoulders as they both stared, unbelievingly at what had happened. They had Paige's bed pulled back away from Walter's and they were all standing around the bed as they were working on her.
"Epinephrine is on board." One of the nurses said.
"You sure it was the demerol?" One of them asked.
"Had to be, it is the only thing that has changed since she's been here." Debbie replied as she bagged Paige.
"Starting antihistamine and cortisone now." Another said as she took the flow restriction off the IV tube.
"Come on Paige, don't you dare give up on us now, damn it." Debbie said as she continued bagging and everyone watching the monitor and the decreasing heart rate.
Tears ran down Happy's face as she moved over to Ralph and Cabe. She put one arm around Ralph and hugged him. Ralph put his arms around Happy hugging her back but his eyes were on his Mom the whole time. Cabe moved his one arm over and put it around Happy hugging them both tightly to him. The whole time visions of his daughter Amanda dying in her hospital bed danced before his eyes.
"She's going to be okay, Squirt." Happy told him in a hoarse whisper, she was just wishing she could believe that herself.
Paige's heart rate continued to drop as the alarm on the monitor continued to warn them. Suddenly it jumped up thirty beats per minute. And then another twenty beats and then Paige took in a breath on her own.
The wave of relief in everyone was instantaneous.
"Mom!" Ralph said as he pulled away from Happy and Cabe while he pushed in past the nurses and doctor and grabbed her hand. "Mom." He said again.
Paige's eyes fluttered and then she groaned even as a nurse moved a cannula with a mask over her face and it started pumping albuterol into her airways.
"Wha-what happened?" Paige asked tiredly.
"You had a severe reaction to the demerol Paige." Debbie told her as she moved around the bed and tossed the ambu bag away.
"Oh." Paige said softly and then smiled at Ralph. "Don't cry baby." Paige told him as she brought her hand up and wiped his tears.
"We almost lost you again." Ralph told her.
Paige nodded with a slight smile.
"But I'm still here baby." Paige told him. "It is going to be okay."
Happy and Cabe were thanking the extra medical personnel who began leaving the room as Paige grew stronger over the next few minutes until it was just her nurse Debbie and the doctor.
"Paige, now that you are back with us. Do you know roughly when you got pregnant?" The doctor asked as she was editing her chart on the computer.
Paige shook her head and looked over at the doctor.
"Say again?" Paige asked.
The doctor smiled.
"I wanted to know how far along you are in your pregnancy." She told her again.
"I'm pregnant?" Paige said, shocked.
"You didn't know?" The doctor looked embarrassed.
Paige shook her head and then groaned.
"Well I guess that explains why I got sick the other day and the craving for salty sweets." Paige sighed as she looked at Ralph. "Looks like you're going to have a baby brother or sister sweetheart."
Ralph frowned.
"What if I don't want one?" Ralph asked.
Paige smiled as she ran her hand around the back of his head caressing him.
"Sorry sweetheart, we don't always get what we want. But that won't ever diminish my love for you." Paige told him. "Umm, well I know at the start of April I'd taken a home test and I was negative then, this is what, from what Happy said, May 11th?" Paige struggled trying to recall the last couple of months. "So April 1st I was negative and the last time we made love before we broke up was April 15th. Umm, the test said it takes at least seven days for most accurate reading. So what, March 26th is the earliest if I'm thinking straight?"
The doctor pulled up a calendar and looked at the dates.
"Okay, so without anything else to go on, March 26th to April 15th is the window." The doctor repeated as she filled out the chart.
Happy stepped up to Paige's bedside with a large grin.
"Congratulations Paige. I'm really happy and excited for you." Happy told her.
Paige smiled weakly.
"Thank you. I know it might be a bit of a bitter sweet thing for you. I know you really want to get pregnant." Paige squeezed her hand. "Oh and thank you for going to get that pizza. It smells delicious, Happy." Paige told her.
Happy just shook her head.
"Don't worry about that, I can still be happy and excited for you. Boy is Walter going to be surprised when he wakes up. He's missed a lot." Happy laughed.
Paige nodded even as Debbie stepped up to check a couple of things.
"Congratulations Paige. Were you two trying to have a baby?" Debbie asked.
"No, like this one, unplanned but totally wanted, welcomed and loved already." Paige smiled at Ralph who still seemed a little upset.
Paige looked up tiredly at Cabe and smiled.
"What do you think Grandpa?" Paige asked him.
Cabe chuckled.
"Sounds good to me kid." Cabe told her.
Debbie smiled as she removed the nebulizer as the albuterol ran out.
Saturday, May 12th, 2018:
Paige had managed to stay awake long enough to eat one and a half slices of pizza and promptly fell asleep. Cabe took Ralph home with him and Sylvester, while Happy stayed at the hospital. She'd spent the night watching over 3 of her dearest friends. She kept kicking herself over what she had done and been a part of concerning Walter and then for not standing up more for Paige. It wasn't until after Paige had been humiliated completely and quit that she became enraged over it.
She remembered back to Monday afternoon as Sylvester and Toby both told her they would dissolve Centipede Partners and apologize to Walter and Paige. Of course that wasn't until after Happy read them the riot act following Tim leaving their office. She watched as Sylvester drew up the form dissolving Centipede Partners and attaching a copy of the contract with Homeland that gave them the right to terminate the contract before receiving any money. While he did that she made Toby call and cancel the furniture rental and then he called the property managers and told them the property was theirs again but they had to wait for the rental company to get their things.
Toby had complained as they wouldn't be refunded any of the six month lease they'd already paid for.
By seven p.m. on May 8th, Centipede Partners was no more on paper. They still had several jobs to complete. They made several copies and had one that would be delivered by courier to Homeland. Happy had driven Sylvester home and then took Toby back to her house. Happy had pointed at the couch and told him until he had successfully apologized to Walter and Paige, he was sleeping there. And the time on the couch would go up one week every day his apology goes unmade. The next morning they took one copy of the dissolution of Centipede Partners in by hand and had Katherine Cooper sign that she received it.
Happy's attention returned to the present instantly as she turned from Walter's bedside to Paige's and took Paige's hand in hers.
"Oh." Paige said as she began waking up. The nurse had turned off the tramadol the Dr had ordered in place of the demerol so she could sleep easier.
"Paige, good morning." Happy said.
"Oh." Paige grimaced as she tried to move her shoulders. "Good morning, I think." Paige gave her a wan smile.
"You're awake, that makes it a good morning. Now if Walter would just wake up." Happy told her.
"How long was I out this time?" Paige asked slowly.
"Just over ten hours. They gave you a very low dose of tramadol to help you with pain while you slept since you said you'd taken it before. The nurse turned it off about an hour ago." Happy told her.
Paige looked past her and saw Walter asleep.
"Do you mind moving me back closer?" Paige asked.
Happy shook her head and moved her bed and Paige reached out and took Walter's hand in hers.
"I can't wait for you to wake up Walter. I got some big news for you." Paige told him and then she frowned and looked at Happy. "I didn't dream the doctor told me I was pregnant, right?"
Happy grinned and shook her head.
"No, she told you that you were." Happy replied.
Paige smiled as she brought her hand over and rubbed her lower belly.
"Uh, Paige. I need to say something to you." Happy said suddenly as her expression grew serious.
Paige frowned but nodded.
"I'm really sorry Paige. I was a horrible friend, first to Walter and then to you. I should have stood up with you over that Homeland contract. I should have stood against Toby when he wanted to accept it blindly. While I did get upset over what he did with Tim in insulting you, I still failed to stand as I should have against it. You are my friend and I failed you. It wasn't until you had been insulted, humiliated and pushed too far that you quit and then I realized what I had done. And I'm so sorry." Happy told her looking at the floor as she fidgeted with the covers on Paige's bed.
Paige smiled as she reached over and captured one of Happy's hands with hers.
"Happy, I screwed up too. And I'm sorry for that. I never should have walked out on Walter and I never should have supported the idea of Centipede Partners. You guys do your best when you are working under Walter, even if he irritates you sometimes. And frustrations aside, I had a job I loved. One I could grow with, one that provided well for Ralph and I. It gave me the chance to be part of something far greater than myself. It gave me a chance to meet remarkable people and help them, help others. If I hadn't fallen for the malarkey that Toby spread about it, we could have all just gone back to Scorpion and made amends." Paige said tiredly.
Happy nodded.
Paige tenderly rolled to her right and reached over and ran her hand down Walter's cheek.
"I wish you would wake up Walter." Paige said softly.
"That would be nice." Cabe said as he walked in the door with Ralph.
"Morning Cabe." Happy grinned as Ralph ran past her to stand next to Walter so he could see his Mom.
"How are you feeling Mom?" Ralph asked as he reached over and took her outreached hand from Walter's face and squeezed it.
"Good morning sweetheart. Still sore of course and I'm really wishing Walter would wake up. How are you doing? Are you still upset because I'm pregnant?" Paige asked with a smile.
"Well not as upset as yesterday. But I still don't like it. But, Grandpa and Grandma tried to make me see the good in it." Ralph smiled.
"Did Sly not come with you?" Happy asked.
"Yeah, he isn't ready to come in and see Paige or Walter. So he is over in the other room with Toby." Cabe told her.
"Good, maybe that will shut him up." Happy said in disgust. If I am ever stupid enough to get married again the words for better or for worse will only be for my husband. I'm not going through all of this stupid stuff with another guy." Happy joked with them.
"Happy, while I do appreciate you being here for us, don't feel beholden to stay, go be with Toby." Paige smiled.
Happy shook her head.
"He irritated me, wanting me to fluff his pillow. Like his arms are broken or something. It wasn't that big of an incision and only about five centimeters of one lung removed. The big baby." Happy grinned.
Paige laughed and then groaned in pain.
"P-P-Paige, are you okay?" Walter mumbled out hearing her in pain.
"Walter? Oh love, wake up, please." Paige said as she patted his hand with one hand and stroked his cheek with another.
"Just, just five more minutes Paige, please." Walter begged.
"No, Walter, you need to wake up now." Ralph told him as he squeezed his other hand.
"R-Ralph?" Walter struggled to open his eyes. "Wha-what are you both doing in my Loft?"
"Walter, don't you recall? I'd come over and met you at Kovelsky's and we talked and we agreed to get back together." Paige told him.
Walter frowned as he cried out shaking his head no.
"Walt, you're in the hospital. Don't move your head that much, you and Paige both have whiplash, among other problems." Happy told him.
"Happy? What the hell are you doing in the Loft? Get out of here." Walter nearly yelled as his eyes opened.
He saw Ralph standing next to him and he smiled and then he looked at Paige as she gently pulled against his chin. He frowned seeing her laying in a hospital bed next to his.
"Paige, are you okay? What happened to your hair? To us?" Walter's eyes closed as a wave of nausea swept over him. "Oh man, I might be sick."
"Well good luck throwing up Walt, you haven't eaten anything in over two days." Happy smiled.
"Why are you here?" Walter demanded.
"Do you really not remember anything about what happened baby?" Paige asked as she stroked his cheek.
Walter shook his head.
"What's the last thing you remember?" Paige asked fretting.
Walter's eyes closed as he thought. His mind was sluggish to respond and the images that normally would spring up in his mind struggled.
"I'm not sure. Why did you call me baby?" Walter said as he continued thinking.
"Do you remember Tim following us in a beige car as we came home from having dinner at the taco restaurant?" Ralph asked.
"No, I don't. We were at a taco restaurant? Wait, why was Tim following us in a car?" Walter looked at him and frowned.
"Yes, Tim had used Paige's Scorpion bank card to rent a car and was following you Tuesday night." Cabe told him.
"This happened Tuesday night?" Walter frowned.
"You said they told you that we might not remember anything from one to twenty four hours before the bomb right?" Paige asked Happy.
"That's what they said." Happy told her.
"Do you remember going to Kovelsky's Tuesday, May 8th?" Paige asked, a bit fearful.
"May 8th?" Walter questioned. "I-I, no, it can't be May 8th." Walter frowned.
"No, it is May 12th." Cabe spoke up as he moved to the foot of Walter's bed. "Do you remember firing Florence?"
Walter frowned.
"You're saying I fired Florence? I know I was really mad at her and you, but I don't recall firing her. I think I remember an Uber driver." Walter told him.
"Walter, that was over three weeks ago." Cabe told him softly.
"Three weeks?" Walter frowned.
Greetings! I hope this finds you well! Well some of FFN's problems have straightened out finally. Still no metrics. That's the biggest draw to using this site, besides those of you who engage the writers when they update. Of course FFN is all mum about it. Like they don't want to "Advertise" something is wrong. Oh well, I guess it will pass sooner or later.
JerBr23 - Water makes things wet...is that the kind of answer you want? hehe
Railman - Thank you! Yep...cliffhangers...I wonder if there are anymore? lol Hopefully we'll have more information coming now that Walter is waking up! But...he seems to have lost more memories than Paige...not good.
Marti - Indeed, all of you seem to be wondering the same thing. Maybe us writers use the 3 of them too often as the bad guys. *bwahaha* Definitely a lot of possibilities!
Lucy - Now wouldn't that be an evil twist? *makes notes quickly*
RiseOfDespair - LOL Okay, just because you asked so nicely! lol
LouBe - Thank you! Yep, good thing Happy was in the right place at the right time! Amazing how things seem to just work out that way? hehe Hey, Toby without as much air to be a jerk could be a good thing! Though apparently it wasn't enough tissue loss...I guess we need to try harder! lol I wonder...would Mark go to such simple "annoyances" seeking some kind of solace? He always seemed to be wanting to do things more theatrically or diabolical...Not sure either of their actions rises to those things...but maybe? Walter smiled, he's glad you both liked his message. Yep, the glitch can help build up some chapters! lol
To the Adventure! -Tim
