The next day was again a sunny day. A Monday and so school started again as the weekend was over. Calypso greeted her students and welcomed them as they all walked in their class. She had decided to teach some higher classes and ended up teaching the same kids she teached when they were around 6 and 7 years of age. Both she and the kids enjoyed that because they all knew eachother so well by now.
The students were all laughing and talking to each other about what they did in their weekends. She heard both Bluey talking about her saterday with Mackenzie and then Jack and Rusty about their cricket match with him on the same day. ''Mackenzie must have been busy this weekend'' Calypso thought. Suddenly she realised he hadn't arrived yet. This was strange because both of his parents were always on time. And even if they couldn't make it they would call to let her know they would be late. Calypso didn't thought about it to much and looked at the time. It was time to start class. With or without Mackenzie.
By the time it was afternoon and time for reces he still was not at school. Calypso was sitting on the deck outside while she tried to oversee the children who were all playing outside now. She again tried to call Mackenzie's parents with her mobile phone. She tried the house line, then both of their mobile phone numbers. But the house line never got picked up and both mobiles were unreachable. She sighed and put her phone away. ''It's probably nothing to worry about'' she thought to herself. Then suddenly Bluey, Rusty and Jack walked up to here.
''Calypso, do you know if Mackenzie is sick today? We haven't seem him yet.'' asked Rusty.
''Yeah, and we can't play toilet tag with just us three'' added Jack.
''More important, we are worried'' said Bluey.
She smiled at them to hide her worries. ''Well i think that he is. But to be honest, i have no idea. I hoped that you three would know where he was.'' They all shook their head no.
''I believe those army meals Rusty gave us last Saturday made him sick'' said Jack.
''Oh shut up, those meals were fine. I'm fine, you are fine, your dad is fine. Well apart from his burned crotch. But there was nothing wrong with those meals'' Rusty remarked annoyed.
''I'm not saying that the meals weren't bad, i think nothing was wrong with them'' Jack defended himself. ''But maybe he was allergic to something in it?''
''No, he has no allergies. I know that'' Bluey said. ''I just wonder where he could be, it worries me that he did not let us know he wouldn't be here today'' she continued.
''Maybe he and his family were deported back to New-Zealand'' Rusty said serious in the same tone he once told Pretzel that his hamster was probably eaten by a snake.
''RUSTY! Don't say that'' said Bluey angrily.
''What? I'm just thinking of what could have happend to him.'' Rusty defened himself.
'Well, if he is deported back to Zealand, it's up to us army men to save him and get him back to Australia!'' Jack said seriously.
Bluey just stared at him with a 'really?' look on her face and and didn't have anything to say.
''Maybe he will be here again tomorrow'' Calypso said calmy. ''And then we ask him why he wasn't here today. I'm sure there is nothing to worry about.''
But the next day Mackenzie again did not show up at school. Also his parents did not contacted Calypso despite the voice messages she left behind with a request to call her back. She was now really getting worried if something happend to the family.
After school was over she drove in her Ford AU Falcon (the greatest vehicle to ever come off a Australian production line) to the house of the Border Collies. She rang the doorbell but nobody answered. She then noticed that the car was not parked near the house. After looking inside through the windows she gave up. She was wondering if she should contact the police. Maybe there was a family emergency in New-Zealand and they went back there and forgot the contact her? She didn't want to think something terrible had happend tot hem, but she couldn't let that thought go.
''No, they are probably just gone somewhere and forgot to notify me. That can happen'' she sighed and said to herself.
She then went home and tried to relax. She took a bath and then afterwards went for a small sleep. After all, she still had the whole night to be active. She wasn't only a teacher, she was also a volunteer caregiver at the Brisbane hospital in her spare time. Mostly she did this in the weekends and during schoolholidays, but because a other volunteer was on holiday to Greece, she took over some shifts. And it would only bef or a couple of hours tonight. She would go there around 6pm and would be back at home by 11pm. Therefore she could catch enough sleep to start the next day fresh and teaching a class full of children. She really enjoyed her volunteer work at the hospital. Helping and taking care of patiens, talking to them and letting their feel comfortable while also being helpfull to the nurses by doing tasks they don't have the time for.
When it was time she went to the hospital and forgot about her worries for the Border-Collies. She was greeded happily by her colleagues and went to work. The first hours were busy. She was working hard. Helping people to go their bed, helping them eat, walking a car with coffee and tea before bedtime, cleaning up and talking to patients and family.
It was almost the end of her shift and she was done with her tasks. Satisfied she walked along a corridor to see what else she could find to do to help. She suddenly noticed a closed red door. Now every door had the name of the patient that was lying in that room filled in on a paper slip that was then sticked under the roomnumber plate. But this paper slip only had a question mark, no name. '''Strange, never seen that''. She thought, before walking further and not thinking about it to much.
She went to the nursesoffice for a coffee and to talk with the nursed. They all enjoyed her company as she was fun to talk too and she enjoyed their company. Even someone as light-hearthed as she sometimes needed a shoulder to cry on or someone to talk too about the many sad things that usually take place in a hospital.
After a while Calypso rememberd the door with the question mark and decided to ask what that was for.
''So Mandy, i noticed a door with a question mark on it instead of a name in corridor 4B? Do we not know who that is or is it once again a celebrity wanting to be anonymous?'' Calypso asked.
Mandy, a black poodle: ''No, this is a case of unknown identity unfortunately'' she said mournful. ''Just a young child without a name''.
''Oh that's terrible'' Calypso said. ''Are there no parents who are missing their child? How come that child is al alone?''.
''Have you seen the news yesterday about the car crash caused by a drunk driver?'' Mandy asked. Calypso nodded yes. She had seen that news report.
''Well, both his parents died in that collision and he is the soul survivor''.
''Poor child, losing both of your parents and ending up al alone in a hospital''. Said Calypso.
''Since that accident he has been in a coma'' Mandy said. ''The docs around here have not being able to get him out of it. It's one of the reasons why they still don't know who he is''.
Suddenly for some reason Calypso did not feel alright. She did not get sick or pain, but her world suddenly turned dark⦠She had just a awful feeling about something in her. She could feel it in her entire body. Something was not right about this story.
''Mandy''. Calypso said worriedly. ''Could you show me the patient please?''
Mandy looked at her a bit surpised. ''Well.. you know it's not allowed because of privacy protection rules and safety and such things''.
''Please Mandy, i know the rules. But i just have this afwul feeling about this kid. I need to know if what i'm thinking is right and hopefully wrong.''
Mandy knew Calypso for a while and knew that Calypso would never break a rule or was not serious. If Calypso had a bad feeling, then it must be really serious, she thought. She then sighed. ''Alright, walk with me''. They both walked to the corridor. When Calpyso stood before the door her legs trembled. She was so hoping her gut feeling would be wrong.
Mandy opended the door and they walked in the room. It was just a normal room like any other hospital rooms. Calpyso heard a heart monitor beeping and a oxygen machine working. For the rest it was chillingly quiet in the room. She saw some curtains and knew that behind those her question would be answered. For some reason she hoped that she was wrong and ther her feeling would fail this time.
Mandy then carefully and discreetly opens the curtains. Calpyso gasped. Unfortunately her gut feeling where right. In the bed lay Mackenzie looking deathly pale. His fur shaken up, some shaved areas where doctors stitched him up on those places. A scar on his chest from a operation, a little chip in the ear that always stood up straight and his arm in a plaster cast. A mask to help him breath, a catheter and a drip right in his arm. His eyes were closed and if you looked carefully you could see his chest slowly go up and down, indicating he was still breathing. Otherwise if you saw him, he would thought he was a corpse.
Calypso was in disbelief. Somehow when she heard about this lonely kid she thought of Mackenzie and that, that was the reason he didn't showed up at school. That he was involved in that terrible crash. But she thought it was far stretched at first and wanted to be proofed wrong. It backfired against her and she was proven right now
Tears filled her eyes. ''No, no. Poor Mackenzie'' she whispered.
