-Chapter 22: The New Shiganshina-

Inside a small remote village, in the Southeastern area of Wall Maria

It was the crack of dawn in the lands of Wall Maria. Inside this small and isolate village the locals arose from their slumbers to perform their early morning tasks and chores, alongside their newest three additions. A few months back some local hunters stumbled upon an encampment near the outskirts of the village, possibly the hideout of the thieves responsible for the village's current troubles.

For some time now people had noticed some of their foodstuffs going missing, with some playing the blame game trying to find out the culprits. To the surprise of the party, their would-be thieves were revealed to be nothing more than children, all alone, with one of their number cloaked in stolen robes.

When questioned they told their story of how they resided in the district at the time of the attack. An attack that left not only their fellow severely injured, but claimed the lives of their families. Soon they found themselves having to fend for themselves, doing anything they could to survive. With grief in their hearts the hunters bought their story and took them back to the village to have this problem assorted.

Upon hearing the tale, looks of pity formed on the faces of the villagers. Understanding the awful situation they found themselves in the children were permitted to stay, though on a condition. Like many they would have to pitch in and do their share of the work, to which they agreed.

So here the two children were toying away at some chores, while their third remained inside recovering. Though many had learned to be cautious with him, for he was prone to bursts of anger and sorrow, sometimes waking up the village with his screams.

As the two worked the sudden shouts from near the front gate alerted the villagers. Many, including the two rushed to see what all the commotion was all about. It revealed to be one of the merchants that would occasionally come by a few times a month. Though today it seemed he had something different to offer the village. That being news.

"They've done it! The gates been repaired!" He exclaimed loudly to the surprise and confusion of the people, especially the two children.

"Oh, did they now?"

"Hmph, only took like what? A year?"

"Thought they plugged it up already.."

"How much of our taxes went to it again?"

These were but a few reactions to the news, while the children simply looked to one another with worry in their eyes.

"Even more my friends! They plan to hold a reopening ceremony of the District today! All are invited to partake in the merriment!" This certainly got the villagers talking as the goods seller continued. "I'm sure I don't need to explain what such a ceremony entails, eh?"

Their eyes widened. No doubt such an occasion would be complete without an assortment of all manners of delicious food and drink and other such luxuries. With this in mind the villagers went about to make plans to depart to Shiganshina, deciding amongst themselves who would go and who would stay. Meanwhile the two children retreated into the background, their thoughts not as merry as the villagers.

"Great…just, great…" Said the shortest of the two in a hushed tone, weary of anyone else listening. Her tall companion simply pulled his hair back in frustration.

"*Sigh* What are we gonna tell him?" The young blonde looked up to him with her usual cold gaze.

"Doesn't matter. He's still gonna act up…" The dark haired boy couldn't help but agree. Since that day their comrade's behavior hadn't improved. Always either muttering to himself of just going into a fit, at times he'd simply shut himself off from anyone, his still good eye staring down at the ground or at the malformed thing that used to be his left arm.

"Let's just get today over with. We'll think of something…" Nothing more was said as the two continued doing their chores, while the rest of the village prepared to send those lucky few to the district and bring back whatever goods they could.

Inside the interior of Wall Maria, near Shiganshina's inner gate

It was around seven in the morning when a large crowd of Wall Maria's denizens were gathered for this momentous occasion. All walks of life were seen and represented in the gathered masses. From town and village locals, merchants and business owners, survivors of the skirmish, and the faithful followers of the marked man. They all stood shoulder to shoulder for this special occasion.

Upon a podium installed near the interior gate stood a representative of the royal government. To his left stood Commander Pixis and his retinue, as well as the head of the Garrison's Engineering Corps. To his right stood the commander of the Survey Corps, as well as the renowned Savior of Shiganshina.

Near the podium stood a few members of the Military Police, acting as guards and keeping the masses at a safe distance from the dignitaries. Like VIPs at a grand gala or as if the king himself were at the event in person.

As the crowd talked amongst themselves the royal representative took out a pocket watch and raised his brows, seeing as it was time to get the show on the road. Pocketing the watch away he prepared himself to deliver his opening speech.

"Attention everyone! May I have your attention!" The conversations and mutterings slowly began to quiet down, with the heads of every gathered inhabitant eyeing the well-dressed man like hawks.

"Thank you.*Ehrm* Allow me to welcome you all to this momentous moment. Nearly a year has passed since this district last opened its gate. Nearly a year since that fateful day…"

Forlorn looks began to form on many of the townsfolk, especially the survivors. Faces of those no longer with them filled their minds. Some held their remaining families close, while others grasped keepsakes, mementos, and trinkets of their fallen.

"While lives were lost, I fear we would have lost the entirety of Wall Maria if it were not for the brave actions of the both the Garrison and the Scout Regiment." He gestured to the men at his sides, eliciting a few claps and cheers from the crowd, though it didn't compare to the ones in hooded visages and adorned with morning star iconographies. "And of course I cannot forget the efforts of our most renown soldier-"

"Praise his name!" Shouted one of the members of Maverick's following, which was reciprocated by the rest of the gathered order. Their cheers and praises at their savior soon proved infectious as many of the townsfolk join in. Maverick could only smile at the scene before him offering a wave to the people which seemed to egg them on further, though there was one small group that caught his glowing gaze, for they were very familiar faces.

It was the Yeager and Arlert families, who looked back at him and waved. Despite her condition Carla still managed to show a smile as she waved him hello, with her children offering their own meek little waves. As he nodded in their direction he saw that there were two others behind the wife of the late doctor, an elder man and woman.

'Ahhh, must be her folks.' He surmised. He turned to the Arlerts and chuckled at the sight of the young Armin sitting on the shoulders of his grandfather, gods above grant him strength.

He offered a warm smile in return, just as the crowd cheers died down, to some degree. With a small bead of sweat forming on his head the representative attempted to continue.

"Y-Yes, of course. His acts of valor have secured the continued safety of Wall Maria. We are truly blessed to have such a...dedicated soldier fighting for the sake of humanity." His words seemed to please the gathering as the cheering from the cultist continued.

"Though a special mention goes to the people residing here." The cheers went silent as questioning looks formed on the crowd. "Even after the unfortunate disaster you, the people of Shiganshina, have persevered. You've managed to rebuild your lives here in the greater lands of Maria. You've shown the beasts that roam outside our Walls, that humanity can do more than adapt and overcome their hardships, that they can rebuild!"

The crowd remained silent, completely taken aback by the praise given by the lavishly dressed representative. Never in their lives would they have thought they'd hear, much less receive praise from a Sina man. Others gave him some more questionable looks, wondering what his angle was.

"Which is why today, I am proud to say that his royal majesty himself has deemed the Shiganshina District habitable once again!" A few claps and mutters from the crowd. It was the reason they were all here after all, no reason to state the obvious.

"Many have accused that the taxpayers money has been wasted away. Allow these fine gentlemen to rectify those concerns." Gesturing to his left the head of the Garrison's Engineering Corps stepped forward. He was a man in his late twenties, yet a few streaks of grew hair were already showing on the sides of his head. He seemed almost indistinguishable from any normal member of the Garrison, besides the charcoal pencils and notes sticking out of his jacket pockets. Taking a deep breath he prepared to speak.

"The majority of last year's taxes have gone to the development of the new gate design for Shiganshina. During the attack much of the outer gate and the mechanisms used to operate it were destroyed. Getting the materials needed to redesign it have been quite costly. Honestly if it weren't for you folks it would have taken us probably another two years before we could see the district reopen again."

He sounded sincere enough for the people to accept, even if a few still found complaint about the rise in their taxes. Just then the elderly Commander of the Southern territories spoke up.

"Not just the gate but much of the area near the outer gate has been repurposed for military use, as much of the infrastructure was damaged beyond repair. As you know we took matters of retrieving and returning many belongings to the residents of the district." He continued, with his wrinkled features hardening.

"Rest assured our actions have been done for your benefit. With the remodeling of the district we can better serve to protect it and its inhabitants. While I can't promise that an incident such as that of last year will happen again you have my word, as acting commander of the southern territories, we will be ready." Silence filled the air before a few slow claps began to be heard, which was soon followed by more and more clapping and cheering. With a smile hiding under his moustache the commander stepped back allowing the representative the spotlight once more.

"With that in mind, allow me to formally declare Wall Maria's Southern District reopen for resettlement. Gentlemen!" On que the mechanisms that operated the large instillation sprung to life, followed by the sight of the interior gate slowly being lifted. The crowd looked on with wide eyes as the suns bright light began to seep out, as if the gates of heaven themselves were opening. Though it took all of a few seconds, to the gathered masses, time almost seemed to slow to a crawl as the gate raised to its highest point.

The gate finally stopped, with some in the crowd taking the first few step towards the interior of the district. Soon the rest of them began to make their way be they relocating families and couples, or those who wished to see how much the district had changed.

As they watched the settlers pass, the royal representative took out a handkerchief, wiping the few beads of sweat from his brow.

"*Sigh* That went rather well." He said in a relieved tone. Though the sudden feeling of a hand on his shoulder nearly made him jump.

"A fine little speech." Pixis said. The head of the Engineering Corps nodding in agreement, causing the shard dressed man to let out a still nervous chuckle. "You think so? I worried I may have sounded a bit too preachy."

"Ehhh, a solid seven outta ten, pretty sure a couple people smelled the BS." Maverick said rather bluntly with a shaky hand, causing the man to deflate a little.

"I-I see…" A few awkward seconds passed before the representative clapped his hands. "Well then, let us join the people in their merriment shall we?"

With that the gathered VIPs joined the rest of the cheering masses from the rear as they reentered the Shiganshina District, escorted by the MP's of course, though the unicorns consciously choose to distance themselves further from the seven foot tall glowing goliath.

Inside the interior of the Shiganshina District

The eyes of many denizens widened in surprise the moment they stepped foot in the district. The main street they walked on, once covered in bodies, blood, and rubble, was now clean and well maintained. The once collapsed and dilapidated homes had been repaired and remodeled, looking brand new.

Many were left speechless as they admired the old sights and retraced the familiar grounds. It was like the district didn't get attacked at all. Some of the old residents separated from the large crowd to find and resettle in their old homes, while the majority continued on their way towards the center of the district, taking in all the sights, both old and new.

As the crowd passed by the Survey Corps' HQ many took the chance to greet and thank the scouts for their efforts, even offering a few gifts and foodstuffs. A special case came with the families of the scouts, who took the chance to see their sons and daughters in person after months away.

"I understand this is all a lot to take in, but if everyone could stick together and make way to the marketplace, we have quite the surprise for you!" Shouted the representative. Curious the denizens made their way towards the old market square, occasionally stopping to take in the sights of the new constructions.

Market square, inside the Shiganshina District

Some went off to the market's location by memory while others simply followed the ever-increasing delicious smelling aromas in the air. Regardless of how they arrived the gathered masses eventually made it to the sight of the rebuilt marketplace, and were immediately left slack jawed. For waiting for them were a series of stalls with a variety of foods gathered on all sides of the square, and in the center were at least a couple hundred sets of tables and benches.

"As you see we've prepared a welcome home feast prepared for all." The crowd remained motionless as their mouth watered at the array of food presented. Chuckling to himself the man encouraged them. "Well don't let me keep you all, I'm sure all this walking has made you all famished."

Almost immediately everyone stampeded towards the tables, pushing, and shoving one another as they quickly grabbed and secured any and all seats for themselves and their families, before grabbing plates and silverware and partaking in the grand buffet.

The VIPs watched as the townsfolk filled their stomachs with the large and diverse varieties of foods. Much of it was donated by the many merchant guilds and companies, none more so than the Reeves Company, with their access to a far more exotic foodstuffs, all the way from Wall Sina no less.

Maverick could see the Yeagers and the Arlerts from among the masses, looking to enjoying their meals, even little Eren looked to be in good spirits. Though he couldn't help but feel a sense of rising melancholy at the sight of the other families enjoying in the company of one another, watching as their children ran across from stall to stall with sparkling eyes, food still in their mouths.

It was such a familiar sight…of times where he too enjoyed such quality time with…his…

He soon brushed those thoughts out of his mind. This was their day to enjoy, to take their minds off their hardships and enjoy a nice day out and a return to their homes. Steeling himself he continued to observe the survivors of the skirmish smile and laugh once again.

Even the members of his following looked to be truly enjoying themselves, talking with one another and the townsfolk without their usual theatrics, as well as removing their hoods, displaying their own eye-catching markings painted on their faces. He chuckled in his head, they truly were the devoted types.

As he observed the crowd he noticed a rather amusing sight, in the form of a young thief of sorts. They were off in the back sneaking from stall to stall, stuffing both their face and the pack in their hand with a variety of food. He watched as the hooded little sneak hid themselves behind a stall as a couple walked by, before slowly poking their head out. As they looked around, they met his gaze and froze, giving Maverick a view under their hood.

The thief in actuality was a she. A young looking woman of tan complexion with freckled cheeks that were currently puffed out like a chipmunk. As their impromptu staring contest continued he offered a little wave from his hand, causing the little thief to gulp down her food and slowly back away from sight. Suppose she was worried about getting tattled on, which he wouldn't have done, for Maverick was no snitch…at least now.

"They sure look to be enjoying themselves eh?" Turning his head Maverick was met with the sight of Hannes, with two drinks in his hands, as well as a female companion, a drink in her hand as well. "T-They uh…didn't have anything bigger than this." A genuine smile formed on the marked man's face.

"It's the thought that counts, you have my thanks." Taking the small bottle with his index finger and thumb he downed it in one go, electing surprise from both the soldier and his companion. "Shouldn't you be on watch though?" He asked to which Hannes puffed out his chest and gave a smirk.

"I'm on break, plus wanted the misses to see the improvements." His head motioned towards the woman by his side, who simply gave a returning smile.

"Ah, so this is…" Hannes immediately knew what he was trying to say, feeling a bit embarrassed at not doing this sooner.

"Ah right! This lovely lady is my other half, Amelia." He presented his wife to which she simply let out an amused huff before taking a sip of her drink. She was a fair looking woman, possibly in her late twenties. Her light brown hair was in a bun, showing much of her still youthful features.

Facing the woman Maverick put one of his classic charmed smiles as he greeted the Garrison's wife.

"Amelia, a beautiful name." A slightly surprised and flustered look before taking the compliment from the goliath.

"T-Thank you. My husband tells me a lot about you." An inquisitive look then formed as the large man leaned in closer to the two.

"Oh? Good things I hope?" He asked while slowly turning his head in Hanne's direction. The man simply kept his mouth shut as a giggle escaped his wife's lips.

"Very. Not a day goes by where he sings your praises." She sent a sly look to her husband, as he stared going into a coughing fit. Getting the water out of his system he turned to his darling wife of many years.

"O-Oi, you making me sound like them." He muttered in a hushed tone, while gesturing at the many members of Maverick's cult. Both his wife and large friend chuckled at his expense till the voice of a certain commander of the southern territories spoke.

"I do hope you brought enough for all of us Hannes." Said Pixis with a raised brow. Hannes looked confused for a moment, till he realized just what the commander meant, as he looked at the drink in his hands.

"I-I…M-My apologies sir! I'll go and ge-" Before he could even start running back to the where he first bought the drinks, the elder commanders laughter stopped him.

"I jest Hannes, I have my own stock right here." He pulled out his trusty flask from inside his jacket and began to unscrew the cap, though the voice of his aide stopped him halfway.

"Commander, please practice some moderation." Anka said with an unamused tone, while Gustav gave a resigned look, knowing that words alone wouldn't be able to stop him. As if reading his mind the commander chuckled her words off.

"My dear Anka this is a momentous day, a day that must be enjoyed with drink." With that he took a satisfying swig from his flask with his aids sighing to themselves. Taking a note from his book the other officials decided to partake in what the buffet market was offering, with the largest of them taking quite a few plates full of food for himself.

Many a tale would be told thereafter of the Savior of Shiganshina, not only of his immense and godlike strength, but of the absurd amount of food he could ingest in a matter of minutes.

With their stomachs filled the masses continued on the tour of the district, often scattering about to see the different areas and see whatever renovations or new constructions took hold. However what caught the interest of many were the series of large towers that were built closer to the area of the outer gate, as their height surpassed many of the buildings.

Upon approaching the area many were met with the sight of a large fence blocking the main road to the outer gate. Many saw what looked to be fortifications of some sort surrounded the blocked off area, all topped with cannons additional blockades, and flags displaying the colors and image of Maria. Even the path to the outer gate had been altered, as large trenches and large stakes pointed outwards.

One couldn't be mistaken to think the place looked like a warzone of sorts, as numerous sentries patrolled the area, making sure the people kept their distance.

Among the townsfolk approaching the area near the outer gate was the Yeager and Arlert family respectively, both wanting to see what had happened to the formers home as well as sating their curiosities concerning the tower installation.

"Eren, slow down! You'll trip!" Carla shouted as her son ran off ahead to see what had happened to their old home, with Mikasa ever by his side.

"Listen to your mother, sweetheart!" Carla's mother exclaimed as she wheeled her daughter along.

"I'll go get him." Carla's father said with a resigned tone, ready to retrieve his rambunctious grandson, something he had started getting used to doing on a near regular basis. Though his daughter's arm stopped him in his tracks.

"No, No, dad it's alright, Mikasa's with him." Ah yes, Mikasa. Bless Grisha's soul for taking that young girl in, she had been a constant help when wrangling Eren in. With a content sigh the elder father resumed his steady pace, by his daughters and dear wife's side.

Meanwhile Armin looked to his grandfather with a hopeful gaze, to which the elder Arlert nodded, answering the unspoken question. With a smile the boy ran off to join his friends, leaving the adults by their own for company.

"My God, just look at all this…" John said as he eyed the massive fortifications straight ahead. It was honestly quite surreal to see something such as this with his own eyes, a part of him still in disbelief.

"I know, hard to believe all our taxes went to making all this…" Carla's father said, eliciting a chuckle from the other parental figures.

The children meanwhile continued to make their way, with Eren in the lead. His eyes were wide in shock, just what had they done to this part of the district he called home once? Was his old house still there? Could he maybe get inside and take a look?

"Woah, woah, hold it kid! This areas' off limits."

The stationed Garrison near the fence crushed whatever hopes he had. Eventually Mikasa and Armin caught up and the three simply settled on looking at the new fortifications. They noticed that some looked to be near completion, as the sights of laborers and the occasional foreman confirmed. Though soon their sights was on the main attraction, that being the outer gate.

Though numerous cracks still appeared, the new gate blocked off the majority of the breach. New chains had been installed, as well as the mechanisms meant to control the raising and lowering of the gate. And upon the center of the gate itself was a brand-smacking new emblem.

Like its sister gate it displayed an image of the so-called goddess Maria, though this one was vastly different in design.

Despite the distance between each other the young children could see that instead of the side view of Maria's face, it was a front view instead, with the goddess holding the top of a shield with both hands. Inside the shield was the image of two crossed weapons, the signature weapons of the Scouts, and the Titan Slayer respectively. At the bottom a banner stream looked to be wrapped around the bottom of the shield, with writing that was hard to make out from such a distance.

As the three continued to stare at the new symbol of the district the sudden and booming voice of the Garrisons' head engineer spooked them.

"As you can see this entire area near the outer gate has been repurposed for the defense of the greater district! These towers and bunkers will serve in both defensive and offensive operations, should any titans find their way inside." A few awed looks and gasps from the crowd were heard as they looked at the defenses again with renewed fascination.

"While we hope such a situation never occurs again, we must be prepared nonetheless! The area near the outer gate has been narrowed and filled with trenches, pitfalls, and other stopgaps." He continued.

"This is known as a kill zone. Any titan stupid enough to fall for these traps will be easy pickings for the cannon crews positioned across these fortifications! That's the plan at least…" He muttered the last part though it seemed to go unheard as many cheers and claps from the crowd continued, very much impressed with not only the defenses, but also with the planned strategy that, to them at least, seemed unbreakable. Then the man from Sina opened his mouth again.

"As the good commander said before these fortifications have been bult with your safety in mind! You may rest easy knowing these brave and selfless men and women will be ever vigilant!"

The claps continued as the crowds attention was brough to the other military officials of the entourage, though whether they were for the representative as well was very much up for debate.

-oOo-

Later on…

It was around one in the afternoon and at this point many of the returning denizens had moved back into their old/new homes, thought there were still quite a few that still roamed and toured the district. The representative and the other officials lead said group towards the last point of interest in the district, which was located across the canal.

Crossing across a newly built mechanized bridge connecting the two areas the crowd was met with quite honestly a bizarre sight. For in a clearing stood five large stones scattered in a distinct star shaped formation around the grass filled clearing. Upon the confused looks from the crowd the representative began his spiel.

"I'm sure many of you are curious of this installation. These five pieces are all that remains of the old outer gate. Originally they were meant to be broken down and reused in the construction. However, upon an anonymous request it was decided that their purpose will instead be in remembrance of those who suffered losses."

The townsfolk gave him confused and alarmed stares, though he paid them no mind as he continued.

"These memorial stones will serve in honor of those who lost their lives on that fateful day. On these stones they will be forever immortalized and honored."

The townsfolk remained silent, simply observing the stones with a variety of looks, from shock expressions to ones with hints of anger. Considering these same stones claimed the lives of many on that day it was understandable that many would have such reactions at the sight of them. The representative continued, while motioning for a few workers to approach a cart filled with chisels and gravers held inside.

"I understand that there may be some that might this distasteful, but I implore you all, to write the names of those who are no longer with us. In order to preserve them, so that they may never be forgotten."

Though many still remained in shock at what the purpose of these remains, a few of the townsfolk stepped forward, approaching the cart and taking hold of the tools with slightly shaky hands and slowly making their way towards the boulders. Soon the masses followed suit taking the multitude to chisels and gravers provided or grouping up on those who had them, in hopes of being the next ones.

Each person, be it a family, lovers, or friends of the departed, carefully, and slowly carved the names of those who fell in the skirmish. Even with the lack of experience and aches in their hearts they took great care not to misspell each and every word. Before passing it on to another denizen.

The entire painstaking process took a few hours to complete, to the point where the sun was starting to set over the wall. Though eventually everyone that had a someone to remember had made their marks, the once clear looking boulders now covered with names upon names. Silence filled the air as the last of the townsfolk, a mother and her child, finished carving the name of their departed and slowly backed away, a tear threatening to streak down her cheek.

Far from the gathered crowd stood Erwin and Maverick looking at the new memorial in silence, for no words needed to be said as the townsfolk muttered prayers to their dead once again.

"An anonymous request hmmm?" Erwin whispered to his large-statured comrade who kept his eyes forward, watching as some of the folk began to console one another.

"Wanted something more…respectable, to remember them." Erwin raised a confused brow in response, though soon a memory from a conversation from long ago popped in his mind. It was a few weeks after the breach when Maverick recounted how rushed the burials were for the slain, describing it as the equivalent of dumping bits and pieces of garbage into a firepit, with a few honeyed words as recompense.

It certainly brought everyone into a sour mood for a few days, himself included. But now, here was a place dedicated to their memory and honor, hopefully their spirits could be appeased.

"We'll, you've certainly accomplished that." A small smile appeared on Maverick's face, glad the commander understood his sentiments. Nothing more was said as the two continued to watch the townsfolk mourn in silence, until the representative once again spoke aloud, though thankfully they were his closing statements. After speaking his peace he thanked the others for their time and wished them luck in their efforts, efforts and sacrifices that the crown was very much thankful for.

After he left with his MP escort things seemed to simmer as the people relaxed, with the occasional joke and jab at the Sina man's expense being muttered out. Though soon some in the crowd began to make their way back across the deployed bridge into the greater district.

"Let's return to headquarters, things here seem to be wrapping up." Erwin turned and made his way to the large bridge, though the voice of the marked man brought him to a halt.

"I'd like to stay here for a while longer, with your permission sir." Surprised at his tone Erwin turned to see Maverick looking back at him with a sideways glance, his single blue eye glowing bright. Seeing no real issue with his request he approved.

"Very well. Don't stay for too long though, less Hange comes and drags you back herself." A thankful smile formed under Maverick's beard and before long the large man continued to watch as the last of the people left the memorial. Though there was one that remained standing in the same spot near one of the stones, a member of his following. This one had received many condolences by the others in the order as they departed, though they showed no response or acknowledgment.

Having an idea as to the hooded ones identity Maverick slowly began to approach them. As he did the cult member slightly turned their head before returning to the stone, a few hitched breaths sounding as the demigod closed in.

"I still feel the aches in my heart whenever I think of this place. Now that I'm here, they have only strengthened." The hoarse voice revealed the individual to be the leader of the order himself, Cornelius. Maverick remained silent as the man tried to control his breathing, his back still turned to him as he continued.

"I still see their faces in my dreams, before they…" The man took pause, unable to continue speaking as the memories of that day flashed in his mind once again. The faces of his dear wife and children, their looks of shock and fright…and their remains in the aftermath.

"They were still so young…m-m-my oldest, barely even a decade on this earth…" His voice became unsteady and hitched as he tried to keep himself together, not wanting to show weakness to the superhuman. Only for the sudden sensation of a hand on his shoulder made him take pause.

"You'll see them again Cornelius, they've simply gone up a few steps ahead." The leader of the order was speechless. Not only by the soft tone in his voice, but also by the assurance. As if it was nothing short of certain.

"You would know that, would you?" Maverick knew there was no hint of malice or scorn in his remark, simply questioning as he responded with a saddened response.

"More than you know, believe me." Cornelius remained in place before his head suddenly turned to meet the being of his orders worship, finally giving Maverick a look at his hollow and painted features. Though now a surprised look had formed on his tear-stricken face as he realized why the marked man sounded so understanding of his current state. He gave a nod before looking back at the stone, specifically the names he carved.

"It should have been me…they had so much more to live for…" He placed his hand over two of the three names, before slowly rising to the top one of the trio.

"And her…" Memories flashed in his mind of the one who had once made life inside the district worth living for. With a saddened smile he recounted to his idol of one of the many enjoyable moments of his old life.

"She was the one for me you know….For reasons I still don't know, she chose someone like me to spend her life with…" Maverick simply kept a supportive hold on his acolyte's shoulder as he retold the story of his family, listening intently as this was all too familiar with him. Soon though the silence returned as Cornelius tried to continue.

"I-I miss them, d-dearly…" He finally said, managing to sputter it out before a series of sniffles and sobs engulfed the silence around the memorial. Maverick in all this could only look down at the man with an empathetic gaze, for the man's current state had resurfaced certain fond and aching memories of himself in his.

Memories of his early rebirth…

The face of his first love…their children…their grandkids…

How he too thought she was the only one for him…then and forever…

The feelings of anguish and rage when he awoke again…

The untold centuries he spent alone…a vain hope that he would see them again…

Though not similar with Cornelius' situation, he knew what the man was feeling. He had suffered those thoughts, that your one and only was gone forever. Though unlike him he knew they would be reunited once his clock was up. He would give him that assurance and belief.

"Then know that they're now watching over you, and I know they'll be waiting for you when your time comes." Cornelius looked back to him, another questioning expression on his face. With that Maverick spoke the same words that were given to him, many millennia's ago.

"But until that moment arrives Cornelius, the best you can do for both them and yourself is to keep moving forward, because believe me, the last thing they would want is to see you in pain."

The leader of the order remained silent as the words of his idol repeating in his head. Slowly but surely they began to sink in, slowly coming to an agreement within himself.

Despite the pains of a solitary life, he had somehow managed to keep going, to continue living. Perhaps they truly were watching over him, and helping him along the way.

With that in mind he offered one last glance at the carvings on the stone before thanking the marked man for spending the last minutes alongside him, as well for his words. Maverick responded with a few encouraging words, eliciting a small but thankful smile on his first acolyte.

As he watched him make his way back to the other side of the district he took one final glance at the memorial stones. Crouching down he read the trio of names that had been carved, reading, and memorizing the names of the departed.

Ingrid Bennet

Jakob Bennet

Abbey Bennet

A sigh left his breath as he backed away, looking at the many names of the deceased from that day, each a life extinguished far too early. He held his hand together and offered a prayer.

'O Lords above and below, grant these departed souls the eternal rest they have been denied…

May they find peace and serenity as they walk among the realms of the beyond, under your loving gazes and protections…

May they be finally free of their burdens and bask in the light of the afterlife, now and forever…

And may they one day be reunited with those they held dear, and walk hand in hand once more...'

Upon finishing his prayers did he feel a sudden chilling breeze pass through him, which was all that he needed to know that his words were acknowledged.

Rising again to his full height he gave one last glance at the five carved stones before finally leaving the now sacred grounds.

Later, inside the Mess Hall of the Scouts' HQ

The sky had turned deeper shades of red and orange by the time Maverick had returned to headquarters. Upon entering the main plaza he was greeted by Darius and Moses who directed him to the Mess Hall where the rest of the regiment had gathered.

Upon opening the door he was met with the many faces of his comrades as they enjoyed a late day meal. Many greeted and saluted him, especially the newest members of the regiment who raised their mugs in his presence.

"Welcome back, Mav." Came the voice of Hange who was seated next to her old friend Marlene, who waved hello at him. It brought a small smile to the man, glad to her socializing with her fellows. Nodding at them he approached their table.

"So, had fun at the ceremony?" Hange asked with an inquisitive tone, which was followed by a cheeky remark from her friend.

"Yeah, heard you caused quite a scene at the breakfast buffet~." Marlene added with a small little smirk. He mentally sighed, not entirely surprised to know that word of his actions had spread. So with a huff and a smirk of his own he played along.

"That I did, though having to hear a kiss ass yack their mouth off every five seconds kinda spoiled my appetite." That got a few chuckles from the scouts, with even the good captain a few tables back giving an approving nod. "But honestly, it was nice to see everyone enjoying themselves, surprised so many even showed up." Hange could only smile in response at her companions response. Indeed the number of returning citizens to the district was an astounding sight.

"What about you and the others." He suddenly asked, which got the bespectacled scout all fired up again.

"Oh, we've been having all sorts of fun! While you were gone I went ahead and started teaching the boys English!" She exclaimed with sparkling eyes.

"Oh?" Maverick said with an impressed tone in his voice. Nodding her head she turned and gestured at the rest of the squad who were seated somewhere else. The moment he laid eyes on them did his hidden smile turned downward.

"Ohhh…" He muttered as he saw the state his squad was in. Besides Moblit, who gave him a small wave, the others looked utterly exhausted, poor Abel and Harold slumped their heads down on the table, while Keiji and Rashad were just barely keeping steady.

"You doing good boys?" He asked, with the members of Delta giving a few weak nods and mutters in response. Turning to the vice-captain for answers he received a quick response.

"Hange had them studying for five hours straight." After that little tid-bit Maverick slowly turned his head back to his squad leader, who immediately buckled under his stern gaze.

"It's only because I have complete faith in them!" The goliath continued to stare into her eyes, though his look softened a little as he let out a breath. While he could somewhat relate, she had to understand that being taught a new language took time and not everyone would learn at the same pace. Be it English, Reikspiel, Wookie, hell even the tongue they were speaking right now.

"Hanji…" The disappointment in his tone made her look away from the glowing eyes of her friend, finding the floor to be far more comfortable. Though before he could lecture her the commander stood up from his seat and spoke out to get everyone's attention.

"Now that were all gathered I have an important announcement." With all eyes on him and him alone he continued, starting with some rather good news, depending on the individual.

"With the reopening and resettlement of the district, as well as the near completion of the fortifications, the time for enacting the true purpose of our regiment is close at hand." A few smiles came from the veterans, while the new members gave inquisitive looks.

"I've spoken with and received confirmation from the Premiere and the blessing of the king himself. Our operations beyond the walls will commence once again!" Many mugs were raised in that moment, for many were glad to finally stop playing defense against their titanic foes.

"Though I say this, unfortunately well have to wait a while longer." As expected, he received many despondent and confused looks from both veteran and rookie alike. "Much of the kingdoms funds have gone to the reconstruction of the outer gate and the defensive renovations, simple as that." With that explained he pushed on, giving the regiment a bit of hope for the future.

"But a day will come where our expeditions will continue once again. I've already made my case to the officials." This statement piqued the interest of the captain sitting beside him.

"You didn't have to fight for it like Keith?" Shaking his head Erwin gave an honestly surprised response.

"Surprisingly, no." This made Levi raise a brow. From what he was told, it was always quite a struggle for the last commander to get any funding for their expeditions, especially after the fiasco with the outside base a few years back.

"Hah, with this guy in our ranks, how could they deny?" Came the resound tone from the pompadoured scout who gestured to the giant man standing near the back of the hall. Many other voiced their agreements, no doubt filling the superhuman's pride in himself.

"Maybe they finally see the use in the Corps." A veteran remarked, which caused Erwin to retreat into his thoughts for only just a few moments, before snaping back to address his comrades. "Perhaps…"

Getting back into his groove he raised his mug, many following his example.

"Regardless, soon we'll no longer be on the defensive. Soon we'll finally retake the lands that were lost so long ago. And now with our regiment's numbers replenished, and a certain individual among us…" His eyes set on the marked man in the back who simply offered a smile in return, with many looking to Maverick with reverence.

"Then humanities future outside the Walls is certain!" Claps and cheers erupted form the scouts their cups raised high alongside their spirits.

"Today marks more than just simply the reopening of Shiganshina. Today marks the day that humanity makes the first steps towards a brighter future! A future where titans are no longer a threat to our existence! A future that will see humanity expand it borders once again! And reclaim its spot as the apex beings on this earth!"

With all eyes on Erwin he raised his mug high into the air, and with a resounding shout he proclaimed to the men and women under his command.

"To our future victories!"

The scouts let out cheered and clinked their mugs in celebration. Satisfied with his speech Erwin returned to his seat to enjoy the rest of his meal, alongside his comrades. For the next few hours the Mess Hall was filled with an unusual amount of good vibes, which wasn't entirely a bad thing of course.

For moments such as these should be treasured and enjoyed to their fullest, for they never knew when today would be their last on this earth.

-A Brief History of the Walls-

The Reopening of the Shiganshina District: In the late spring of 846, the Shiganshina District was reopened for the population of Wall Maria to resettle. While there were a fair number that chose to stay in the greater lands of Wall Maria, there were estimated to be close to three thousand civilians that gathered outside the interior gate, waiting anxiously for said gate to be reopened. Though with its reopening came many renovations, such as the inclusion of new battlements and defenses installed near the area close to the outer wall, which once supported additional housings for the civilian population.

The Wall'O'Guns: A term coined by the Titan Slayer Maverick, which became the catch all term for the series of defensive fortifications situated near Shiganshina's outer gate. Once used for housing the civilian population, the area near the outer gate was reinforced and weaponized with a series of pitfalls, trenches, and stakes surrounding a narrow passageway meant for the Scout Regiment to travel. Should a titan manage to find its way inside and succumb to the traps, it would be met with a series of cannons and other artillery pieces installed across the defenses, ready to blast it to oblivion.

A/N: You ever find yourself knowing what you want to write in your head, but struggle to actually type it down? That was me throughout this chapter. But I think I managed to get everything I wanted down.

So this chapter is basically meant to establish the fact that Shiganshina is back in business. Now sporting some actual defenses, besides the wall cannons. For reference imagine the defenses made to the Trost District in the anime mixed with some medieval style forts and cannon towers from the game.

A crying shame though, all the efforts of our dear trio have literally been for nothing. Can their time on the island get any worse?

Now, I'm sure in reality, the renovations and rebuilding of the district would have taken much longer than a year, but this is a fanfic with an overpowered OC, so let's just suspend our disbeliefs and say that the government taxed the shit out of every citizen inside the walls, Sina included.

I know some of you are dying to see the scouts go on their expeditions again, believe me I can't wait to finally write them. I just need to write out a couple more events before I can move on to the big expedition arc. I hope you can all understand.

Not much else to say, like I said last time, next chapter will be a milestone for this story, so hopefully I can get it done and released by the time of its special date.

Also finally decided to include a certain character into the story. Like to thank one LionLordEscanor for reminding me of their existence. Till next time.
