Kagome climbed through the well, her heart pounding with anticipation. She had been waiting for this moment, to return and see everyone again. As she emerged from the well, she was immediately picked up by Sesshomaru. His arms wrapped around her in a protective embrace, his presence a comforting, familiar strength.
"Sesshomaru," she breathed, burying her face in his chest. "I've missed you so much."
"And I, you," he replied, his voice soft and soothing.
Immediately, he took her face into his hands and kissed her. Kagome melted into the kiss, her body relaxing as she felt his warmth, his strength, and his unwavering presence. She had missed him more than words could express—the scent of his skin, the touch of his hands, and the way he looked at her with such intensity and love.
Sesshomaru's kiss was both gentle and passionate, filled with the longing and devotion that had built up during their time apart. He deepened the kiss, his hands moving to the small of her back, pulling her closer to him. Kagome's fingers tangled in his hair, feeling the silky strands between her fingers as she held onto him, not wanting to let go.
When they finally broke the kiss, Sesshomaru rested his forehead against hers, his breath warm on her lips. "Every moment without you felt like an eternity," he murmured, his golden eyes locked onto hers. "I cannot bear to be apart from you any longer."
Kagome smiled, tears of happiness welling up in her eyes. "I feel the same way. I never want to be separated from you again."
He stroked her cheek with his thumb, his touch tender and reassuring. "You are my heart, Kagome. This one will always protect you, always be by your side."
They stood there for a moment, wrapped in each other's arms, savoring the feeling of being together again. The world around them seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them in their own perfect moment.
Sesshomaru led her to a nearby clearing, where the moonlight bathed everything in a soft, ethereal glow. They sat together, Kagome leaning against him, her head resting on his shoulder. Sesshomaru's arm was wrapped around her, holding her close as they watched the stars twinkle above.
Kagome sighed contentedly, feeling a sense of peace she hadn't felt in a long time. "This is perfect," she whispered. "Just being with you like this."
He looked at her with confusion, "but we aren't together."
But as Kagome looked around the clearing, her joy turned to horror. The once lively forest was eerily silent, the air thick with a foreboding chill. She noticed Miroku and Sango lying motionless on the ground, their bodies lifeless, bloodied and still. Shippo was nearby, his small form crumpled and unresponsive.
"No," Kagome whispered, her voice trembling. "This can't be real."
She turned to Sesshomaru, her eyes wide with panic. But to her utter despair, Sesshomaru's eyes were vacant, his body cold and unresponsive. He was dead, just like the others.
"Sesshomaru!" she screamed, shaking him. "Please, wake up! This isn't real!"
Stumbling back in shock, when she noticed Inuyasha was pinned to the tree, his body unrecognizable. Screaming, Kagome tripped and fell into the well. Darkness enveloped her as she plummeted, her heart racing with fear and sorrow. She hit the bottom with a jolt, her body trembling as she tried to make sense of the nightmare.
With a gasp, Kagome awoke in her bedroom, her heart pounding in her chest. She sat up, her body drenched in sweat, her breath coming in short, frantic gasps. The familiar surroundings of her room brought a wave of relief, but the haunting images of her dream lingered in her mind.
"It was just a dream," she whispered to herself, clutching her blanket tightly. "Just a terrible, terrible dream."
She glanced around her room, her eyes adjusting to the dim light. The comforting sight of her family's home, the familiar sounds of the house at night, helped to ground her. Kagome took several deep breaths, trying to calm her racing heart.
Lying back down, Kagome closed her eyes and willed herself to remember that it wasn't real. The terror and sadness of the dream slowly faded, replaced by the comforting reality of her home and the knowledge that her friends and loved ones were safe.
She knew she had to be strong, for herself and for those she cared about. The bond she shared with her friends, with Sesshomaru, was unbreakable. No nightmare could take that away from her. Naraku was gone; he hadn't harmed any of them. They were all alive.
A knock at her door broke her thoughts. "Kagome? Is everything alright?"
"Uh, yes," Kagome called back, a smile spreading across her face.
There was a pause before her mother spoke again. "Don't forget you are graduating today. You will have to be at the University in two hours."
The reminder brought a surge of excitement. Today was the day she had been working towards for the past four years. Kagome threw off her covers and headed to the bathroom. The warm water of the shower washed away the remnants of her nightmare, and she felt her spirits lift. She had worked so hard to get to this point, and today was a celebration of all her efforts.
After her shower, Kagome stood in front of the mirror, her reflection showing a determined young woman ready to take on the world. She applied her makeup carefully, enhancing her natural beauty with a touch of mascara, some blush, and a soft pink lipstick. As she did so, she thought about all the hours she had poured into her studies.
Throwing herself into her degree had been a way to cope with the heartbreak and depression of leaving her friends and Sesshomaru behind in the past. Every late-night study session, every exam, every paper she wrote—it had all led to this moment.
Her heart had been heavy when she first returned to her time, but she channeled that sorrow into something productive. She had chosen a degree in History, wanting to keep a connection to the past that had meant so much to her. Each class, each assignment, had been a way to stay close to her memories while forging a new path for herself.
Kagome picked out her graduation outfit: a smart, elegant dress in a soft purple color that complemented her complexion. She slipped it on, feeling the smooth fabric against her skin. It was a simple yet sophisticated choice, perfect for the occasion. She added a pair of pearl earrings and a delicate necklace, gifts from her mother to mark this special day.
As she stood before her vanity, she stared at the hairpin that sat there. It was a silver metal hair stick adorned with crystal cherry blossoms and a large amethyst crescent moon dangling from it. It was the hair stick that Sesshomaru had given her before he disappeared completely from her sight.
With a deep breath, she picked up the hairpin, feeling its cool weight in her hand. She hadn't realized until now how much the colors of her dress matched Sesshomaru's colors—soft purples and silvers, reminiscent of his ethereal presence.
Carefully, she twisted her hair up into an elegant bun and used the hair stick to pin it in place. The cherry blossoms and crescent moon caught the light, shimmering softly. She looked at her reflection, and for a moment, it felt as if Sesshomaru was there with her, his strength and calmness enveloping her.
The hair stick was more than just an accessory; it was a symbol of the bond they shared, a token of his love and protection. She felt a rush of emotion.
With a final glance at her reflection, Kagome felt a surge of confidence. She was dressed in his colors, carrying a piece of him with her. It was as if he was silently supporting her, reminding her of the strength she possessed.
She smiled at her reflection, a mixture of sadness and joy in her eyes. "Thank you, Sesshomaru," she whispered softly. "I will always carry you with me."
Looking at herself in the mirror, Kagome took a deep breath. She saw a woman who had grown stronger, who had faced her challenges head-on and come out victorious. She saw someone who had learned to balance the weight of the past with the promise of the future. The nightmare was a reminder of what she had left behind, but it also underscored how far she had come.
With a final glance at her reflection, Kagome grabbed her graduation cap and gown and headed downstairs. Her family was waiting for her, their faces beaming with pride.
"You look beautiful, Kagome," her mother said, tears shining in her eyes. "We're so proud of you."
"Thanks, Mom," Kagome replied, hugging her. "I couldn't have done it without all of you."
Her grandfather and Sota joined in the group hug, and Kagome felt the warmth of their love and support surrounding her.
"Let's get going," her grandfather said, his voice gruff with emotion. "We don't want to be late."
They piled into the car, the excitement building as they drove to the university. Kagome looked out the window, the familiar sights of the city passing by, but her mind was on the journey that had brought her here. The heartache of leaving the past had fueled her determination to succeed in the present. Today was not just a graduation—it was a testament to her resilience and strength.
At the university, they joined the throngs of students and families, the air buzzing with anticipation. Kagome slipped on her graduation gown, the weight of it feeling like a mantle of all her hard work and achievements. She adjusted her cap, making sure it was straight, and took her place in line with her classmates.
As the ceremony began, Kagome's thoughts drifted back to her dream. The image of Sesshomaru and her friends flashed before her, and she felt a pang of longing. But she also felt a sense of peace. They were a part of her, no matter where or when she was. She carried their love and strength with her, always.
When her name was called, Kagome walked across the stage, her heart pounding with pride and joy. She accepted the black tube, a symbol of all she had accomplished. She glanced out at the audience, seeing her family's beaming faces, and felt a rush of gratitude.
She reached for a small bottle of sake, a graduation gift from her grandfather. Holding it in her hand, she made her way to the well house, a place that held so many memories.
As she walked through the shrine grounds, her steps felt heavy with nostalgia. The familiar path to the well house seemed longer today. She could almost hear the echoes of laughter, the voices of her friends, the battles fought, and the love she had found and lost.
Kagome opened the door to the well house and stepped inside. The air was cool and still, filled with a faint scent of earth and old wood. She walked slowly towards the well, its presence a silent reminder of a time when her life had been full of magic and adventure.
She sat down on the steps, the wooden boards creaking softly beneath her. She uncorked the sake bottle, took a small sip, and let the warm liquid soothe her. Staring at the well, she felt a mixture of longing and sadness.
How many times had she tried to use it again? Hundreds, probably. Each time, she had hoped that the magic would return, that she would be able to see Inuyasha, Sesshomaru, and her friends again. But each time, she had ended up covered in dirt, tears streaming down her face. The well had remained stubbornly closed, its magic gone.
She took another sip of sake, the warmth spreading through her. She remembered the first time she had fallen through the well, the fear and excitement, the adventure that had awaited her. She remembered the friends she had made, the battles they had fought together, and the love she had found.
Inuyasha's grin, Shippō's mischief, Miroku's wisdom, Sango's strength, and Rin's smile—they were all etched into her memory. And Sesshomaru… her heart ached at the thought of him. The stoic, powerful demon lord who had come to mean so much to her. She could still feel his embrace, the warmth of his kiss, and the strength of his love.
Kagome's eyes filled with tears. She had tried so hard to move on, to focus on her studies and build a future for herself. She had thrown herself into her degree, studying hard to distract herself from the heartbreak and depression. It had worked, to some extent. She had succeeded, graduating with honors. But the pain of losing them, of losing him, was still there, a dull ache that never truly went away.
She took another sip of sake, staring at the well. "I miss you all so much," she whispered. "I miss you, Sesshomaru."
The silence of the well house seemed to echo her words. She could almost see them, standing around her, their smiles and laughter filling the space. She closed her eyes, letting herself imagine, just for a moment, that they were there with her.
The well had been her gateway to another world, a world where she had found her true self, where she had grown stronger and braver. It had given her so much, but it had also taken so much away. The finality of it was hard to accept. She had been ready to spend her life in the feudal era, to be with Sesshomaru and her friends. But that choice had been taken from her, and she had been forced to adapt to a life without them.
Kagome wiped away her tears, taking a deep breath. She knew she couldn't dwell in the past forever. She had to live her life, make the most of the present, and honor the memories of those she loved. They wouldn't want her to be sad. They would want her to be happy, to find joy and meaning in her life.
Kagome took another sip of the sake. "Thank you," she said softly. "For everything."
"Kagome, dear?"
Sniffling, Kagome didn't bother to hide her tears. She knew her family was aware of her depression, of her longing to return to the past. Her mother had held her countless nights, soothing her when she woke up crying. Her mother had always been understanding and patient with her.
"If I could help you get back there, I would." Her mother came to sit on the well steps beside her, reaching for the sake bottle and taking a sip herself.
"Mama…" Kagome watched as her mother smiled at her. "Would that not hurt you?"
"I only care for my children to be happy." Her mother handed the bottle back to her, her eyes filled with love and concern.
Kagome took another sip, feeling the warmth of the sake and her mother's presence. "I miss him so much, Mama. Sesshomaru... I just want to see him again."
Her mother nodded, her expression softening. "I wish I could have met him, Kagome. He must have been very special to capture your heart the way he did."
Kagome smiled through her tears. "He was. He's strong, brave, and has this gentle side that he rarely shows. He made me feel safe, loved..."
Her mother wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. "I can see why you miss him so much. But remember, he would want you to be happy, to live your life fully."
Kagome nodded, taking comfort in her mother's words. They sat in silence for a moment, passing the sake bottle back and forth.
"So, Mama," Kagome began, trying to shift the conversation. "How are the wedding plans coming along?"
Her mother's eyes lit up. "Oh, everything is almost ready. It's going to be a beautiful ceremony."
Kagome felt a small spark of happiness at the thought. "I'm excited too. I am happy that you have found someone that makes you happy."
Her mother laughed softly. "I never thought I would find love again after your Father died, my only concern was raising you and Sota."
Kagome leaned into her mother's embrace, feeling a sense of peace she hadn't felt in a long time. "Thank you, Mama. For everything."
Her mother kissed the top of her head. "You're my daughter, Kagome. I'll always be here for you."
They sat together on the well steps, sharing the sake and talking about the future. Until the last sip was gone, before they both left the well house and disappeared back into their home where Kagome fell into bed, the alcohol numbing her as she fell into a deep sleep that night.
Kagome wandered through the bridal boutique, her fingers lightly grazing the fabrics of various wedding gowns. Her mother was standing in front of a large mirror, examining herself in a beautiful, ivory dress. The wedding was just a week away, and the excitement was palpable.
"Do you think this one suits me, Kagome?" her mother asked, turning to face her.
Kagome smiled, her eyes welling up with tears of happiness. "You look stunning, Mama. Haru is going to be blown away when he sees you."
Her mother blushed slightly, smoothing down the fabric of the dress. "I hope so. He's been so wonderful to us."
Kagome's thoughts drifted to Haru, her mother's fiancé. He had come into their lives at a time when they needed stability and support. Haru had been nothing but kind and patient, always ready to lend a hand or a listening ear. He was a quiet, steady presence, much like the way Kagome remembered Sesshomaru.
"Haru is a good man," Kagome said softly. "He's been like a rock for our family."
Her mother nodded, her eyes shimmering with emotion. "He really has. I'm so grateful to have found him. I never thought I'd find love again after your father, but Haru has shown me that it's possible to move forward and be happy."
Kagome felt a pang in her heart, thinking about her own lost love. But seeing her mother find happiness again gave her hope. If her mother could find love after such loss, perhaps Kagome could, too.
As they continued to browse through the dresses, Kagome couldn't help but admire her mother's resilience. She had faced so many hardships and still managed to open her heart to love again. It was inspiring.
"What about this one, Mama?" Kagome held up a dress with intricate lace details and a flowing skirt.
Her mother's eyes lit up as she took the dress from Kagome. "It's beautiful. Let's try it on."
Kagome helped her mother into the dress, fastening the buttons and adjusting the fabric. As her mother stepped in front of the mirror once more, Kagome saw the reflection of a strong, beautiful woman who had faced life's challenges with grace and courage.
"You look perfect," Kagome whispered, her voice filled with admiration.
Her mother turned, pulling Kagome into a tight hug. "I'm so glad you're here with me, Kagome. I couldn't have done any of this without you."
Tears slipped down Kagome's cheeks as she hugged her mother back. "I'm always here for you, Mama. Just like you've always been there for me."
They stood there for a moment, holding each other, before her mother pulled back, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Now, how about we find you a dress for the wedding? Haru's family will be there, and I want you to look your best."
Kagome laughed, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "Okay, let's find something special."
As they continued shopping, Kagome felt a sense of peace. The past would always be a part of her, but she was learning to find joy in the present and hope for the future. And with her mother by her side and Haru joining their family, she knew that she was going to be okay.
