Abbott Huican gives Ryo a bottle of medicine which helps an injured patient recover faster. He then calls a group of Yuan-ranked monks, commanding 3 of them to carry Huiyuan to his room. Considering the Kyokugen-ryu guests, they will meet again after 2 months, another battle is inevitable. Neither the Sakazakies nor the Shaolin monks want the other side to see their training routines. There is also the risk of sneaky attacks. For those reasons, although nobody says it out loud, they all know it is better to avoid seeing each other for the next 2 months. Another group of Yuan-ranked monks helps Ryo and his daughter to travel to a motel 5km away from the temple.
The father and daughter of Kyokugen-ryu Karate have stayed in this motel for about a week. Anh Thư is not fully recovered yet, however she is healthy enough to start training again. Everyday, Ryo takes her out to the wood, away from the noise of civilization. When they meet the Shaolin monks again, they will face more prepared martial artists, the Kyokugen-ryu duo must be even more prepared. They start with light conditioning so that Anh Thư can recover her cardio and athleticism, and gradually increase the tendency of the excercise and sparring sections.
After one month, Anh Thư's condition is almost as good as before the battle with the Copper Louhans. Ryo lets her do her own conditioning, including hitting hard objects, repeating multiple Katas and Kihons, meanwhile he picks up some good pieces of wood to craft a pair of Tonfas. Among the weapons Takuma has taught the girl, her favourite is Sai, however it is a lethal weapon and Ryo does not want to create a grudge between his school and Shaolin. "The Invincible Dragon" has experienced the prowess of Shaolin's Gun Shu, Anh Thư can defend herself against 1 or 2 of them with her skills in Bojutsu, however she lacks the strength to fight a long battle with them. Although Tonfa is not as lethal as Sai, it has great compatibility with the girl's mobility and unarmed Karate skills. Most people know Ryo as "The Invincible Dragon" and the current chief of Kyokugen-ryu Karate, however this man also has brilliant craftsmanship as it was the mean to earn a living in his childhood.
It is 10 a.m of the 51th day. Ryo and Anh Thư will visit Shaolin Temple again after 9 days. Another battle against the monks seems inevitable. With her new pair of Tonfa, the daughter attacks the father with a variety of techniques targetting every weak points on his body. With his experience in martial arts, "The Invincible Dragon" parries every strike his daughter throws at him, and once in a while launches his own counter-attack. In this sparring section, they gradually increases the speed of their techniques without showing any opening.
Their training is interrupted as the Kyokugen-ryu duo suddenly hear small sounds of breathes and footsteps. Ryo is an experienced martial artist and Anh Thư had followed her mother in assassination missions, they can distinguish the breathe and footstep of an ordinary person, a trained martial artist and a fighter attempting to sneak on them. Judging from the direction of the sounds, it seems they have covered the route to the motel the Sakazakies stay in.
"Who are coming?", Anh Thư shouts in Chinese as she detects that the enemies are only around 20 - 30 meters away from them.
From the bushes, a slim Chinese man in a fancy white suit walks out. His left palm covers his right hand that is holding a white paper fan, the Chinese man slightly lowers his head while raising his hands, a greeting gesture in Chinese martial art community. Ryo also lowers his head to greet him in Japanese manner. The man speaks in English:
"I am Duan Hung from Duan family. My skills are mediorce, I cannot hide from your keen eyes and ears."
"Duan family? Is he a descendant of South Emperor?", Ryo thinks.
"Who are the brothers over there?", the Karateka looks at the bushes behind Duan and asks. "What are you doing there? Why don't you come out?"
Duan Hung lowers his hands. With a quick flick of his hand, he opens the fan. The Chinese man then replies:
"Please excuse our poor manners but approaching you this suddenly is our only way for us to have this meeting."
From the bushes, 10 Chinese men step out. Based on their appeareances, their ages should vary between 25 to 40, some are slim and some are muscular, 5 of them carry weapons. Duan points at a young man who is about 5cm taller than Ryo and says:
"This is "12 Kicks 11 Marks" Tan Fei from Hebei. His nickname comes from his skills in Tan Tui, 12 continuous kicks but leaves on 11 marks on the target."
"12 roads of Tan Tui are indeed formidable. I've admired your style for a long time.", Ryo lowers his head to Tan Fei and says.
Duan Hung continues his introducion:
"This person is Yang Dazhong, the young master of Yang clan and the heir of Ancient Tomb sect. You probably have not heard of this sect because they have stayed in seclusion for centuries."
Unknown to Duan, Ryo and Anh Thư actually have heard of Ancient Tomb sect a few times. Although they have never encountered any disciple of that school, the girl and her mother were trained in the martial arts of that lineage. The Kyokugen-ryu duo carefully looks at young master Yang, he is a handsome man in his mid 20s, his skin is quite pale, similar to the assassins of Hizoku clan which was originated from Ancient Tomb sect. Yang Dazhong wears yellow Hanfu and carries no weapons.
"You must be a descendent of The Condor Hero, "West Madness" Yang Guo.", Ryo says, his manner is similar to how he greets Duan and Tan.
The Chinese men are surprised that Ryo can immediately tell Yang Dazhong's identity. Even among Chinese martial art community, most have forgotten about the tales of Yang Guo and Ancient Tomb sect, the successor of "West Venom" Ouyang Feng among the Five Greats. Yang Dazhong is proud of the reputation of his family that even a Karateka from the U.S knows about, however he also worries if Ryo has figured out how to counter his martial art techniques. The young man raises his hands and says:
"We are glad that Chief Sakazaki has taken notice of our sect."
Duan Hung points to a tall and muscular man who carries a pair of black maces:
"This brother is "Black Wind Tiger" Ma Dariang from Black Tiger Kungfu school in Taiwan. His maces are as fast as wind and as ferocious as a tiger."
"Cool nickname.", Ryo says as he greets Ma Dariang. "I would like to see Mr. Ma's brilliant skills one day."
"You are flattering me.", Ma replies but he does not greet the Karateka with proper manner. Ryo does not mind, however he could sense the Chinese's hostility against him.
Duan introduces the next guy, this is a muscular young man:
"This is Wang Hu. His family is famous for their skills in Northern Shaolin's Praying Mantis Kungfu."
Hearing this, Ryo suddenly remember a man he defeated years ago. On that night, the young Karateka brought Wang Jiang Nan of Praying Mantis Kungfu to his knees and the first Mr. Karate, Takuma Sakazaki, killed him with a "Haoh Shokou Ken".
"This is troublesome.", Ryo thinks as he says: "Praying Mantis and Eagle Claw are some of the best martial arts from Shaolin. A pleasure to meet you."
Without saying a word, Wang raises his hands to greet Nidaime Mr. Karate. His hands tremble while he gives the Kyokugen-ryu master ferocious glance, as if he could lose his patience and attack the Japanese at any moment.
The next person to be introduced is a tall and slim man in his 30s. He carries a Chinese sword (Jian) behind his back.
"This is Senior Zhao from Mount Huo school, "Sword Saint" Zhao Butui."
Ryo is still finding words to greet the swordsman when his daughter says in Chinese:
"Your name Butui means "No Retreat", your alias is "Sword Saint". Mount Huo sect may be a profound sword school, however Shaolin has "Darma Swordsplay", Wudang has "Taichi Jian", your sword skills may not be as good as your names suggest."
"Silly kid.", Zhao says in Chinese. "What do you know about Mount Huo's swordsmanship?"
Anh Thư chuckles as she replies:
"How many disciples of your school tried to steal "Sunflower Manual" and "Bixie Swordsplay"? Cai Zifeng from Sword faction, Yue Su, Yue Buqun and Lin Pingzhi from Qi faction. What is the best swordsmanship from your school again? It is "Dugu 9 Swords", isn't it? But wasn't that martial art created by Dugu Qiubai, who was not even a member of Mount Huo? Furthermore, only a few has the talent and mindset to master this swordsmanship. Have you mastered "Dugu 9 Swords" yet?"
The girl stops for a moment, then suddenly laughs: "Never mind, the first Mr. Karate from our school defeated the last "Dugu 9 Swords" decades ago."
Anh Thư may be just a child, however she has been with her assassin mother, while her Karate grandfather also takes a liking to his eldest grandchild. They have told her many stories about the martial art world, that was how she knew about the martial arts relating to Mount Huo sect.
Ryo does not understand Chinese, however based on her tone and Zhao's annoyed reaction, he knows his foul-mouthed daughter is being recklessly disrespectful again. The swordsman suddenly draws his sword out and stabs the girl. His technique is fast and smooth without any wasted movement, the name "Sword Saint" is not a false claim. The Karateka immediately pulls Anh Thư away from the sword's range before it reaches, meanwhile his eyes look for any opening. However, after that stab, Zhao does not continue his offense. His arm is pushed down by the hand of a fat man, he also carries a sword. Capable of stopping Zhao's sword with such a simple and effortless movement, this man shows his excellent skills and powerful internal energy.
"Please be patient, brother Zhao.", the man talks to "Sword Saint" in Chinese, then turns to Ryo and introduces himself in English. "I am Xue Lien from Kunlun sect."
2 other swordsmen move to his sides, a man in his late 20s and a slim man in his early 20s. Xue Lien releases Zhao's hand, points to the 2 swordsmen and continues:
"This is my 2nd brother, Xue Shan. The other one is my youngest brother, Xue Jing."
"Kunlun, Mount Huo, along with Shaolin, Wudang, Emei, Kongtong, are 6 Great Schools of Chinese Martial Arts.", Ryo says. "I would love to have discussions about martial arts with you."
Duan Hung points at the a muscular man in his late 30s.
"By the way, this is Senior Lu Yingxiong. He is one of Five Elders of Kongtong sect."
The only things Ryo know about Kongtong sect are that it is one of Chinese biggest schools of Kungfu and one of its martial arts is "7 Injuries Fist". Takuma used to defeat a person of this skills. It seems Lu also comes here with bad intention.
"A pleasure to meet you.", Ryo greets the man, but he only reacts when the Karateka lowers his head. It looks like the Kongtong Elder does not understand English.
After explaining to Lu Yingxiong what Ryo just said,Duan introduces the last person, this one is a short yet muscular man:
"This is Senior Lam Qian from Foshan's Hung Ga Kuen. His ancestors were disciples of Wong Fei Hung."
Ryo used to encounter Derrick Li, a crimelord who mastered Southern Shaolin Kungfu. Li's martial art was technically a different branch from the same lineage pf Wong Fei Hung's Hung Ga.
"Master Wong is a martial artist I admire.", Ryo says. "I'm glad to meet someone who inherits his martial arts."
"Master Wong's martial arts are vast, I'm ashame that I could not master even 10 percents of his knowledge.", Lam replies in humble manner, however there is still some hospility in his tone.
They are a group of 11 Chinese martial artists from different martial art schools, but all of them shares the same grudge against Kyokugen-ryu Karate. While working for Geese Howard as Mr. Karate, Takuma Sakazaki had murdered a number of martial artists. Among the victims, 3 rogue members of Kunlun sect were killed and the manual of "Kunlun Swordsplay" was stolen, while Phillip Duan from Duan clan, Tan Jiao of Tan Tui, Lu Xian from Kongtong school, Yang Ming from Ancient Tomb sect, Ma Baijian from Mount Huo were defeated by his fists. Meanwhile, Wang Jiang Nan of Praying Mantis Kungfu and Derrick Li of Southern Shaolin Kungfu were defeated by "The Invincible Dragon" himself.
Now that the Chinese have finished their introduction, Ryo says:
"You are prominent martial artists of China, I and my daughter are honored to meet you here. However, it is not convenient or appropriate to have a discussion of martial arts in this wilderness. We would like to invite you to our dojo at a more proper time."
Ryo knows that these people do not come with good intention. Usually, the Karateka would not mind fighting them, however there is a child with him and they will visit Shaolin Temple again in a few days. It is better to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
"We would glad to visit the Kyokugen-ryu Karate one day.", Duan Hung calmly says. "However, we have 2 things we want to discuss with you, one is urgent and the other, despite not as important, we would like to solve it as soon as we have a chance."
The man stops for a moment before continuing:
"About the urgent matter. We heard that you and your daughter wanted to challenge Shaolin school. Shaolin is the biggest Kungfu school of China, we would like to convince you not to violate the holy ground of our martial art community."
"This is a personal business between us and Shaolin.", Ryo replies. "We will visit Shaolin Temple in a few days, however we will not act reckless or cause damage to their temple. I promise you that."
"That is good.", Duan Hung says. "A person of your status would not lie. About the other bussiness, as you may know, our schools have crossed pathes with yours a few times in the past. We would like to hear your ideas about those encounters."
It is clear that these people only mentioned Shaolin as an excuse to stall the Kyokugen-ryu duo, there main purpose is to settle their grudges against the Karate school. While Ryo is trying to find his way out with words, Anh Thư says in Chinese:
"11 men gang up on a men and a girl for something that happened years ago. A bunch of cowards. If you had guts, why did none of you go to South Town to challenge my father and grandfather when your friends were defeated?"
"You little brat!", Zhao Butui can no longer control his anger, he jumps over the 3 Kunlun swordsmen and attacks the girl with his sword. Ryo does not understand Chinese, however as an experienced martial artist, he has already sensed Zhao's killing intent. The Karateka channels Ki into his right palm and launches a "Kou-ou Ken" toward the swordsman who is in the air. Zhao's legs do not connect to the ground, it is impossible for him to evade this strike, instead he quickly uses the side of the sword block the Ki attack. Ryo's strike does not inflict any damage on Zhao, however it blows him back and stops his attack in the process.
"My father only needs one strike to blow you back.", Anh Thư laughs as she speaks in Chinese. "You can keep the "Sword Saint" title, but the name "No Retreat" is not suitable for you anymore."
Zhao Butui just wants to stab the girl immediately, however the swordsman cannot act reckless. He has failed to attack Anh Thư twice, this is an embarassing incident for a martial artist of his status. If he fails again, he may as well just retire. Furthermore, by the girl's side, there is a formidable martial artist who just neutralized his quick assault with just a single strike. Zhao knows that he needs to wait for the right moment to attack.
Because he does not understand Chinese, Ryo ignores his daughter's conversation. The Karateka looks around, the other Chinese martial artists have already been in their battle stances.
"Can we not solve this peacefully?", Ryo asks.
Duan Hung replies:
"We know it is not honorable to challenge you with this number of people. However, we have to avenge the humiliation our schools suffered from Kyokugen-ryu Karate."
"You wouldn't be satisfied with an apology then?", Ryo asks, his words are that for negotiation but his tone is that of a challenge.
"How about you grant us a gift?", Duan Hung says. "A gift to show your sincerity of solving our resenments. A gift to show that our sects have moved on and are on equal grounds."
"Do we have an object of such value?", Ryo replies.
Duan Hung answers:
"Yes, you do. Years ago, following Geese Howard's order, the first Mr. Karate attacked Golden Dragon Gang and took away 2 weapons, "Heavenly Sword" and "Dragon Slaying Saber" that command the Chinese martial art world.
The ultimate of all weapons
The precious "Dragon Slaying Saber"
And
Without "Heavenly Sword"
Who dares to challenge the Saber's supremacy
To acknowledge Mr. Karate's martial art prowess, Geese Howard granted him the "Dragon Slaying Saber" that "command the martial art world", while Geese himself kept the "Heavenly Sword" that could "challenge the Saber's supremacy". This action was not only an indication of Geese's gratitude toward his most powerful servant, but also a threat that he had the ability to subdue the Karateka.
Years later, you challenged Mr. Karate yourself and under your protection, your school cut all ties with Geese Howard, however "Dragon Slaying Saber" is still in Kyokugen-ryu possession. As you have known, this weapon belongs to Chinese martial art community, the Sword and the Saber were forged from the Black Iron Heavy Sword of Yang Guo, who was Brother Yang's ancestor. These weapons belong to neither the Sakazakies nor the Howards. You are the current chief of Kyokugen-ryu Karate, if you return "Dragon Slaying Saber" to us, we will forget our grudges. We know that you do not carry it with you, we just want a promise from Nidaime Mr. Karate, that when we visit your school, you will hand it to us."
Ryo replies:
"This Saber indeed does not belong to us. Chinese Dao is not presented in Karate either. We have no use of such a weapon. If what you said is true, that this Saber was forged from Brother Yang's ancestor's sword, then I would willingly return it to you. However..."
The Karateka stops for a moment as he gives the people around him fierce glances:
"Coming with this number of people, you are clearly threatening us to give you the Saber. If I agree to that demand, doesn't that mean our Kyokugen-ryu is afraid of your sects?"
"You want to settle our grudges with a fight then?", Duan Hung asks.
Ryo roars in excitement:
"I am the current master of Kyokugen-ryu Karate. If you have a grudge against our school, come and challenge me."
