Ryo has fought 30 bouts without rest, defeating every monk of Xu rank. Each of them has mastered 2-3 Ultimate Arts of Shaolin, from un-armed combat to various forms of melee weapons and ranged weapons such as Dart or Golden Coin. Their skills are not inferior to those from the Bernstein family or Ikari soldiers, while their internal energy are just as powerful as those from Hyakuseiken, Ansatsuken or Kyokugen-ryu. Although Nidaime has defeated them all, the current Ryo Sakazaki is not the same as he was an hour ago. Aside from visible signs of fatigue, "The Invincible Dragon" also suffered scratches on his right forearm and left leg when fighting against Xuzhi's "Darma Swordplay", his left arm was bruised after blocking Xudao's headbutt that was enhanced by "Iron Head", and Xuku's "Tiger Claw" also hurted his left calf.
Only 12 monks are left, 12 monks of Hui rank, however none of the previous 30 Xu-ranked monks was as skilled or powerful as these 12 old monks. The situation does not look good for the Karateka, who was tired and slightly injured from fighting 30 Shaolin elites without rest.
Anh Thư wants to buy some time for her father to recover, she says:
"Abbott Huican, among your juniors here, one person is missing. You know, the one who used "Lion Roar" and was defeated by my father. I believe his name was Huiyuan."
The girl's question immediately catches the attention of the swordsmen and swordswomen from Wudang and Enmei. "Lion Roar" is a Qigong technique of Zen Buddism, using an enormous amount of internal energy to attack the opponent's meridians, only the most accomplished martial artists of external Qigong can master this skill. As the current chief of Kyokugen-ryu Karate, Ryo's Ki is powerful, but it is only on par with monks of Xu ranks, it is hard to believe this man could overcome "Lion Roar" of a high monk of Hui rank. All guests turn their head to look at Abbott Huican, waiting for him to confirm or deny what Anh Thư said.
Abbott Huican says:
"Junior Huiyuan's recklessness put young lady Sakazaki in danger and forced Master Sakazaki to suppress him with force. While Junior Huiyuan was channeling his Qi through his Qi system, Master Sakazki stroke his Middle Tanden, making him lose control of his internal energy, and his throat, preventing the then chaotic energy to escape..."
The faces of Wudang and Enmei martial artists turn pale. Huiyuan is the junior of Abbott Huican, he should have at least 5 decades cultivating Qi. Who could imagine what would happen to a person's physical body and meridians if that amount of energy is sturred up without a way to be released?
The monk continues:
"Junior Huiyuan's injury is no longer fatal and he is recovering. However he may never be able to do martial arts again after his meridians are severely damaged. With his current condition, he cannot come to greet you either. Please excuse my junior."
He stops for a moment, then lets out a sigh:
"Huiyuan spent 53 years mastering martial arts but he used it too recklessly. This may be his karma. However, now he can focus on studying Buddha's teachings without being distracted by martial arts, this may turn out to be a good thing."
His last sentences sound like he was trying to comfort himself and the other monks, however its true purpose was to tell the Chinese guests that Shaolin does not hold a grudge against Kyokugen-ryu Karate for this incident.
The swordsmen and swordswomen do not say another word, each of them is deep in their own thoughts. "Lion's Roar" is a Qigong technique that forcefully pulls everyone around the user to a battle of internal energy, only those who are confident in their Qi prowess would dare to use this technique, and the only way for one to defend against it is to overpower the user with their own Qi. That's why the martial artists from Wudang and Enmei could not imagine themselves winning against "Lion Roar" from one of Shaolin's Hui-ranked monks, and they could not believe a Karateka in his 30s could do it either. But Ryo did not defeat Huiyuan because he was more powerful in Ki or more technical in his Ki controls, "The Invincible Dragon" simply had enough internal energy and physical strength to withstand Huiyuan's "Lion Roar", as well as enough knowledge in martial arts to shut down "Lion Roar" before he was totally defeated. A martial artist's worth is determined through both his inner forces and physical capabilities.
A Hui-ranked monk in his 60s steps forward, in his hand is a monk staff (khakkhara). He says while swinging his staff, creating a fierce wind that blows everyone's hair:
"I am Huijie. Junior Huiyuan and I both learned martial arts under Master Xuanzhen. As Huiyuan's senior, I would like to entertain Master Sakazaki in his place."
"This monk is powerful despite his age, I must not underestimate him.", Ryo thinks as he lowers his head, then changes to his "Tiger Stance", accepting the challenge.
"This is "Evil Banishing Staff", the most powerful staff martial art of Shaolin.", Huijie says as he makes a big leap toward the Karateka, the monk staff swings ferociously to cover his advance. "Please give me some pointers."
"Evil Banishing Staff" is one of Shaolin's 72 Ultimate Arts, whenever a challenger comes to Shaolin, traditionally a master of "Great Vajra Fist" would handle the unarmed fighters and a master of "Evil Banishing Staff" would compete in battles between weapons. Having Huijie using this martial art against an unarmed Karateka is already against the traditions of Chinese martial art world. However as the Kyokugen-ryu Karate people do not know about this, and if there's any criticisms, they can easily spin it as "Karate's motto is that every part of the body is a weapon", Huijie and the Abbess Jinglien had discussed a day prior. Abbott Huican and the Priest Quanfu may not completely agree to this, however Huican will not publicly accuse his junior in this situation and Quanfu will not interfere with Shaolin holding their internal rules, especially when Ryo does not mind fighting against weapon users.
The monk staff is long and heavy, Huijie's strikes are fierce yet leaving no opening. Each time the monk swings his staff, Ryo is forced to take a step back. Compared to Chang's attacks, "Evil Banishing Staff" is more powerful. Compared to Billy and Sokaku's staff skills, "Evil Banishing Staff" is much more complex. Huijie's staff has been swung over 30 times, although Ryo has miraculously evaded and parried them all, the Karateka could not find an opportunity to counter or stop the offense.
After 50 exchanges of strikes, the only person attacking was Huijie and Ryo was the one desperately protecting himself, the Karate's back finally touches the lion stone statue placed on the field. Ryo cannot retreat anymore. Realizing this, Huijie channels his entire strength and Qi into his arms as he thrusts the staff forward, targeting the opponent's chest. After witnessing the fight between the Karateka and Louhan Formation, the monk knows how powerful his "Tenchi Haoh Ken" is. This thrust ultilizes the length of the staff to avoid getting countered by that punch, and if Ryo tries to his the staff, an internal energy battle would favour him over a younger and injured man.
"Take this!"
Ryo is cornered and can no longer retreat. And this strike is too powerful to fully block or parry. "The Invincible Dragon" raises his left hand up, as the staff is approaching, he slightly pushes the shaft to the right to slow it down while his left foot quickly moves to the side. The hand, the foot and the body move in perfect sync, Ryo narrowly escapes defeat. "Evil Banishing Staff" misses its target, but the stone statue behind him is shattered by the fierce strike.
"Naive!", Huijie shouts loudly as he swings the staff horizontally, cutting the opponent's escaping route.
Ryo has faced countless rivals, he has already expected the monk to be capable of using his staff to cover his exposure and chase opponents side-stepping him. As his left foot placed firmly on the ground, the Karateka continues his momentum to move even further to the left while ultilizing that movement to swing his right leg, a Mawashi Geri to the Huijie's abdomen.
The Shaolin monk did not expect "The Invincible Dragon" to sneak his own strike while evading his staff, he did not use his Qigong to toughen his body. This kick aims at his abdomen, interrupting his breathing and the tension of his core muscle. Shaolin Kungfu is a school of external martial arts, breathing and the tension of muscles are the most important aspects of Qigong from these schools. With that kick, the Karateka breaks the concentration of internal energy in the monk's Tanden, Huijie immediately loses the strength in his arms and the staff stops chasing its target.
"I underestimated him.", Huijie thinks as he tries to retreat his staff and take a fast breathe to resume his Qigong. "Using "Iron Armor" at the same time as "Evil Banish Staff" is too exhausting and will slow down my strikes, but if I had used that defensive skill, his kick would not cause me this much trouble."
Ryo has witnessed the prowess of Shaolin's "Evil Banishing Staff", now as he has the upper hand, the Karateka will not let his opponent gather his strength to use those moves again. As the monk retreats his staff, Ryo quickly leaps to his side and throws a punch under Huijie's right arm, an uppercut to the liver. Huijie was trying to take a breathe, this punch forces his lung to immediately release all those air out. His attempt at channeling energy for another strike fails, Huijie hops backward as he tries to create some distance and take a breathe.
But Ryo is the younger and more physical fighter, without the use of internal energy, Huijie is not his match. The Karateka continues chasing him, another punch slips under the monk's arm and attack his liver. Huijie makes another 3 steps backward, Ryo takes another 3 steps forward and throws another 3 liver strikes, the miserable monk has not taken a proper breathe for all that time.
The Karateka suddenly stops his offense and hops back. The result is clear, if Ryo continues, he will hurt the monk badly. Seeing Ryo retreating, Huijie knows the fight is over and he is now safe to recover. The monk releases the strength in his legs and collapses as he takes a breathe in hurry.
Abbott Huican then says:
"Master Sakazaki has won this round. Xutong, your master has his Qi flow forcefully interrupted 5 times, the injuries may not be severe, but they are still internal injuries that cannot be ignored. Bring him to your junior Xukong, he will treat you and your master."
Xutong was hit by Ryo's "Tenchi Haoh Ken" earlier and just recovers enough to stand up. He immediately follows the Abbott's instructions while trying to hide his pain.
