authors note : Peyton knows that despite what Lucas told her. When he left.
His love for her kept him in LA for five years. She knows that playing weak and fragile will leave Lucas worried and concerned about her. He will want to remain in contact. She's playing the long game.
A broken part enough for two.
Just reminiscence of the best parts of my youth.
Look how you found me.
"Do you really have to leave?" Peyton questioned.
Lucas looked to her. "Yes. I've been here a week. I didn't plan to be here for so long." He replied.
"You wanted to make sure i was okay. That's why i love you so much. You care so deeply." Peyton replied.
"I have to get to my life. Larry is taking a break from being on the boat rig to be here in LA with you. So you will have all the support you need." Lucas said.
"But we are going to be in contact right?" Peyton asked.
"We will be. I'll check in sometimes but you should only reach out to me when and if you need too." Lucas explained.
"Thank you for saving me again." Peyton said.
"I will always care about you. We were together a long time." Lucas replied. As he left the house.
His suitcase already packed in his car.
"I'm glad to be here. I know we haven't had quality time to spend together for a long time. And i'm determined to make up for it." Larry Sawyer announced. When he entered the living room.
"I thought Lucas would be sticking around."
"Why is he leaving you here. The last time we spoke."
"The two of you were serious. What happened since then?" Larry asked.
Peyton looked from the window. "He's taking care of his obligations. Nothing more to it." She replied.

Lucas spent his entire flight back to Tree Hill thinking about reuniting and reconnecting with Brooke and finally spending time with Penelope.
Once he got back to town he made his way directly over to Brooke' house.
The red front door opened slowly.
"You didn't let me explain why i had to leave that day."
"Peyton was a wreck and she was broken in a way i never saw before. I couldn't let her go through that alone." Lucas explained.
Brooke's expression hardened.
"Peyton has Larry. I assume you got in contact with him?" Brooke questioned.
"I did. And he's going to stay with her for awhile." Lucas replied.
"So why have you been gone a week?" Brooke questioned.
"Because Peyton wanted me around. I didn't know how to leave without upsetting her." Lucas replied.
"Do you hear yourself right now! What about Penelope!"
"Was she on you're mind at all? I told you from the start that i wasn't going to have this back and forth of you're presence." Brooke replied.
"I'm back now. I'm not going anywhere."
"I want to be her dad. I want us to become friends again." Lucas insisted.
"You're words sound so honest and authentic. But it seems like you're conflicted heart is still very much apart of you."
"I gave you the benefit of the doubt but now i can't trust you not to put our daughter first."
"Ted broke my heart over and over again for years. I refuse to put my daughter through that. You can't be counted on."
"You rebuild you're life in town and just leave us alone." Brooke proclaimed.
"Brooke. You're wrong. It was a one time thing i swear." Lucas insisted. As the front door closed.
