Chapter 4: Unwanted Reunion

For the rest of the morning, after he had seen the one girl he thought he would never see again, Seto Kaiba just could not concentrate. While he still got his assignments done, and typed up codes for his company's upcoming project, he couldn't get Amber's face and hair out of his head.

I was hallucinating, that's the only explanation! There is absolutely no way that I saw someone I have not seen for six years, since even before Gozaburo adopted me and my brother! But no matter how hard he tried to deny it deep down he knew the truth.

Finally, the clock struck 11:00am and he was ecstatic to get out of the school and get back to his prized company. Nothing pleased him more than focusing on his virtual technology and trying to figure out new ways to make his deck stronger so that one day he will finally be able to reclaim his title of World Champion and become the new King of Games.

I just need to get back to my office. The sooner, the better. Only then can I get my focus back on the most important matters.

He started up his blue Viper and sped towards the tallest skyscraper, which stood in the heart of Domino City.

"You guys will write back, right?" Golden orbs shone pleadingly into deep cerulean orbs as the little redhead reached for her small pink suitcase that her brown-haired friend held out for her just before following her new parents into their vehicle.

"I promise, we will write every week, Twilight." Amber set her suitcase down and gave her friend, Seto, a big hug. They stayed in each other's arms for what felt like an eternity before her stepmother called for her that it was time to go. They released but Seto found himself not letting go of her hand for a few more seconds until he heard Sister Margaret behind him.

"Sir?"

Wait, that's not Sister Margaret's voice. Who the…?

"Sir, are you alright?"

Icy eyes blinked and took in the new scenery that engulfed him. Several pairs of eyes, attached to skinny or round faces of men in business suits and ties, stared worriedly at their young brown-haired boss sitting at the head of the table.

"What? Why are you all looking at me like that?"

The men looked to each other and then one man cleared his throat before speaking.

"We were waiting to know what you thought of the project Haruwatori pitched out a few minutes ago."

Project? Shit, I wasn't paying attention, I'll get back with him later on that.

"I'll think about it and get back with you later. We are now done." And with that Kaiba stood up and briskly left the boardroom before anyone else could say anything. He strode into the elevator and pushed the top floor. As the elevator began its slow ascent, Kaiba crossed his arms and closed his eyes taking in a deep breath and slowly exhaling as he tried to clear his mind.

It was Saturday now, and he had not thought about Amber the rest of the week since seeing her on Monday. He made sure he was able to avoid her at all costs when he was at school and once at work, he dove straight into his current project that his mind didn't have a chance to wander into unwanted territory. So, why now? Why did he have to think about the last time he saw her as a kid, and during a freaking meeting of all times?!

The elevator signaled its arrival to the top floor and the doors slid open to reveal a dimly lit foyer with a few offices at the opposite end. In the center of the foyer were a couple of small squared tables with leather chairs around them, and a desk with a blonde woman sitting behind it next to the double oak wood doors that led to the young CEO's office. As he approached his office, he could hear his new secretary humming softly to herself as she typed. He wouldn't admit it out loud but it reminded him of his own mother humming to herself before she died. But he was in no mood to go further down memory lane, especially after what just transpired only moments before.

"Mrs. Dawson?"

"Yes, Sir?" The blonde woman immediately stopped typing and turned her head to her employer.

"Go home, and be back on Monday." And with that Kaiba stepped into his office, closing the doors behind him.

Finally, he was alone and could focus on removing an unwanted girl from deep within his mind. He sat down and began typing on his computer. He needed to stop remembering her, to stop seeing her soft, red-blonde curly hair-framed face, her sun-filled eyes, her soft rosy lips…

Come on, Seto, focus on work, not her! He berated himself and shook his head, desperately trying to focus on anything else but her. He turned around in his chair and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked out over the city he has called home his entire life. Cars were lined up bumper to bumper as the end of the day was drawing near and companies were shutting down for the night. The sky was filled with soft gold, pink, purple, and dark blue hues as the sun began descending the horizon, depicting the twilight of the evening.

Beautiful Twilight…

"Dammit!"

At that moment he felt a buzzing in his trench coat pocket and pulled his black iPhone out to see who was disturbing him but when he saw whom the message was from, he allowed a small smile to form on his usual stone cold face.

Meet us outside in 15. I have a surprise for you, Big Brother!

Fifteen minutes later, just as predicted, a long and sheen black limo pulled up next to the stairwell entrance of Kaiba Corporation. Roland stepped out of the vehicle and waited patiently by the rear passenger door, his hands folded behind his back.

"Um… Mokuba? What are we doing here?" Amber asked her longtime friend. But the raven-haired boy ignored her as he typed something on his phone. A few minutes later, a familiar and tall, handsome teen wearing a black outfit with a purple trench coat and carrying a silver briefcase emerged from the building and slowly descended the marble steps towards the waiting vehicle. Amber's eyes grew a little but she remained quiet. Mokuba noticed her expression and did his best to conceal his all-knowing smirk.

From outside the car, Roland bowed to his master before opening the passenger door. The young president slid inside but had his eyes glued to his phone so it had seemed he did not notice anything, or anyone, out of the ordinary.

"Hey, Big Brother! How was work?" Mokuba cheerfully asked, hoping to get his older brother's attention and get him to put his phone down. But Seto Kaiba continued to stare at his phone as he scrolled down his screen. Seriously, Seto, you still haven't seen her yet?

After a moment of silence, the CEO said, "It was no different than any other day. What's this surprise you said you had for me?"

"Well, you need to look up from your phone first." Blue eyes quickly glanced up from the black phone and beheld the gold eyes he had been thinking about since the memory he had during his earlier business meeting with his department managers.

At first, there were no words from anyone. Mokuba looked from Seto to Amber and back to Seto, hoping his big brother would have something to say to her. After all, they had not seen her for six years! Mokuba had truly missed her, so surely, Seto did too, right? But when Kaiba did finally find his voice, Mokuba knew he was in big trouble.

"What the hell is she doing here?! Explain yourself, Mokuba!"

Amber couldn't believe what she was hearing. She knew he wasn't happy that she was back in Domino, why she had no idea, but how did that warrant for him to be angry with his little brother? She had never heard him yell at Mokuba like that back at the orphanage. But before Mokuba could answer, Amber came to his defense.

"He is just giving me a ride home. I was hanging out with Téa and her fr—…"

But the eighteen year old cut her off. "Then, you should have left with those dweebs instead of getting into my car!"

"Seto, she wasn't going to but I insisted. I've missed her and I thought we could give her a ride home. Please…?" Mokuba looked at his brother with wide puppy dog eyes as he pleaded with him. Kaiba felt an inner turmoil for he hated to disappoint the only person he cared about. On the other hand, he hated to give in to something he felt so strongly against. But, as always, he gave in to the puppy eyes act.

"Fine, but this is the last time." His hardened cerulean eyes did not waver as he stared into Amber's bright eyes. Amber felt herself averting her own eyes as she could not bare to look at him back.

I need to ask him. I need to know why he hates me. I need to know what I've done to offend him. Perhaps I have a chance to make things right.

But just as she was about to open her mouth and ask what was on her mind, the limo pulled up outside her home. It was completely pitch black save for the porch light and street lamps down her street. It was also very quiet, not a sound could be heard save for cars in the far distance.

Oh well, maybe I can ask him some other time… "Thank you both for the ride. It really means a lot." Roland had already gotten out and was waiting by the now open car door.

"It was no trouble, Twilight! It was great to see you again!" Mokuba exclaimed as he hugged his friend for the last time of the night. Kaiba stayed silent as he glued his face to his phone again, the icy expression still frozen to his face. Amber quickly exited before the situation intensified and thanked Roland for the ride before heading towards her front door.

Mokuba waited for the limo to move again before confronting the elder Kaiba.

"What is your problem with her?"

"Excuse me?"

"You heard me… why are you so angry with her, and angry with me for just simply trying to help?" The younger Kaiba's violet grey orbs bore into Seto's own blues, his face now mirroring Seto's.

"I don't have to explain myself to you."

"You're just dodging the question."

Kaiba knew his brother was not going to let this go so he decided to tell him the truth…part of it anyway.

"Because she hurt you when you wrote to her countless times and she never wrote you back like she promised she would. You know I can't stand to see anyone hurt you."

Mokuba's jaw dropped at hearing this confession and remained silent the rest of the way to their manor. All this time, he was angry because she never wrote back? Was that the only reason? Mokuba figured there had to be more to it but he knew his brother was not going to say anymore on the subject.

Meanwhile, as Amber was getting ready for bed, her mind's reel kept replaying the car scene over and over again.

"What the hell is she doing here?! Explain yourself, Mokuba!"

"Oh mom, I really wish you were here. You always knew what to say to help make a bad situation appear way better than it was…"

She slid under her bed covers and tried to go to sleep but sleep only eluded her, her mind racing as if on an endless roller coaster.
