A rhythmic OST rang in Brian's mind as he stared at the beast of chaos. An enormous black knight with a halberd, alongside him a demon of a horse called Red Hair. His presence alone raised the enemy's morale from desperate to victorious. Brian's bodyguards - Dian Wei, Pang De, and Wei Yan - showed visible tension from the legend. If they had to compare it, it was as if they faced Brian once again.
Brian tightened the grip on his weapon, feeling the weight of the moment. This was Lu Bu, the most feared warrior in the land and the game. The stories didn't do him justice: seeing him in person was a different experience altogether. His aura was suffocating, like a dark cloud hanging over the battlefield.
Brian said nothing, his eyes locking onto Lu Bu with a look of complete focus and determination. He raised his weapon, signaling his bodyguards to follow. With a silent acknowledgment, Dian Wei, Pang De, and Wei Yan readied themselves. They could feel the intensity radiating from Brian, and it steeled their resolve. They knew no matter who stood before them, they would come out victorious. Together they launched their attack.
Lu Bu grinned, a wild, predatory glint in his eyes. ''Come!'' He bellowed, his voice carrying across the battlefield. ''Show me what you got!''
The clash was immediate and fierce. Brian led the charge, his halberd meeting Lu Bu's Soul Crusher with a resounding clash that echoed through the air. Sparks flew as metal met metal, each blow a testament to their strength.
Dian Wei roared as he swung his giant axe, aiming for Lu Bu's midsection. Lu Bu parried effortlessly, laughing as he did. ''You'll need more than that to bring me down!'' Wei Yan and Pang De flanked Lu Bu, their weapons striking in perfect unison. Lu Bu moved with incredible agility, dodging and countering with fluid grace. His halberd moved like a whirlwind, deflecting their attacks with almost supernatural ease.
''Is this all you've got?'' Lu Bu taunted, his eyes gleaming with excitement. ''Come on, give me a real fight!''
Amidst the chaos of the battlefield, clusters of soldiers from both sides paused, captivated by the sight of Brian and Lu Bu clashing in the center. The ferocity and skill on display left them awestruck.
''I can't believe what I'm seeing,'' A soldier from Brian's army whispered to his comrade. ''Our lord is holding his own against Lu Bu.''
''I've heard stories about Lu Bu, but seeing him in person is something else. And lord Brian...he's incredible. Look at how he matches every strike.'' The other soldier commented as the grip around his spear tightened.
''I've fought in many battles, but I've never seen anything like this. It's like watching two titans clash. We need to fight with all our might, just like our lord.'' A nearby veteran rallied in amazement.
On the other side, Lu Bu's forces were equally mesmerized. ''This is why Lu Bu is a legend. But the other guy...Who the heck is he? How is he standing to lord Lu Bu?'' One of the soldiers commented, not being able to look away from the fight.
''I don't know, but he is something else, I tell you that. I've never seen anyone fight Lu Bu like that. It almost makes me want to cheer for him.'' A companion acknowledged amazed.
Zang Ba had come to reinforce the center but had stopped after seeing and feeling the shockwaves of this clash. He narrowed his eyes as he watched. ''Whoever this Brian is, he's earned my respect today. But don't forget, men! Lu Bu is not just any warrior! He will prevail!''
''Is this all you've got?'' Lu Bu taunted, his eyes gleaming with excitement. ''Come on, give me a real fight!''
Brian's focus never wavered. He knew this battle was more than just skill; it was a test of their will. He pressed the attack, his movements precise and relentless. Dian Wei, Wei Yan, and Pang De matched his intensity, their combined efforts creating a relentless assault.
Shadow Runner, sensing the danger, circled around to keep the area clear of enemy soldiers, its powerful legs ready to charge at any moment. Ranger swooped down, distracting Lu Bu's men with his sharp, piercing cries. Azeil snarled, ready to pounce on any foe that dared to approach.
Despite their best efforts, Lu Bu seemed to be toying with them. his strikes were powerful and precise, each one threatening to break their formation. Yet, Brian and his bodyguard fought on, refusing to give ground.
As the fight continued, Brian realized that he and Lu Bu were evenly matched in strength. Each clash of their weapons sent shockwaves through the air, neither gaining a decisive advantage. Lu Bu's laughter echoed through the chaos, his enjoyment of the fight clear. ''Yes! This is what I live for!'' He shouted, his voice filled with fierce joy.
~West of Xia Pi castle~
The western side of Xia Pi Castle was a scene of intense combat. Guo Jia, Li Dian, and Yue Jin led their troops with precision, clashing with Lu Lingqi and Wei Xu. The daughter of Lu Bu fought with the same ferocity and skill as her father, her twin pikes weaving a deadly dance as she held back the onslaught.
Li Dian and Yue Jin struggled to keep up with her relentless assault. ''She's as strong as the legends say!'' Li Dian shouted, blocking a powerful strike.
''Don't let up! We need to hold this ground!'' Yue Jin responded, parrying a thrust from Wei Xu and counterattacking with a swift slash.
Guo Jia, observing the battlefield and the current positioning, shouted orders to his men. ''Li Dian, Yue Jin, hold the line! You, come with me! We are going to take this base to make way for reinforcements!'' His strategic mind worked furiously, trying to find a way to win the battle of the western gate.
Lu Lingqi taunted them as she fought, her eyes blazing with determination. ''Is this all you've got? You'll never take this castle. No matter how many you bring, they will all die in vain!''
The battle seemed evenly matched, with neither side gaining a clear advantage. Just then, as fatigue began to set in on both sides, a trumpet blast rang out from the northwestern base. Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuang charged into the fray, their presence immediately skyrocketing the morale of Brian's troops.
''Reinforcements! Fight on, men! Victory is within our grasp!'' Xiahou Dun roared, his blade flashing in the sunlight as he cut through the enemy ranks.
Xiahou Yuan, with his bow in hand and followed by a group of elite archers provided cover fire with deadly accuracy. ''Let's show them the might of our lord!'' He shouted, his arrows finding marks with unerring precision. Lu Lingqi found herself in a pitch, having to deal with the arrows, the reinforcements, and the onslaught of Li Dian and Yue Jin.
She wanted to stand her ground, but Wei Xu called for a retreat. ''Fall back! Regroup at the inner walls!''
Lu Lingqi, though furious, had no choice but to comply. ''This isn't over!'' She shouted, retreating with her troops towards the castle.
~East side, near the floodgates.~
Meanwhile, on the eastern side, Fa Zhang and Jia Xu had engaged in a strategic maneuver against Chen Gong. Fa Zhang had talked with Gua Jia and Jia Xu the night before, and they both knew a strategist had to account for all possibilities. Thus, although they seemed to be discovered, their true goal was not to breach the floodgates themselves.
As the rain of arrows halted their advance and made certain they had to take fortified positions, Chen Gong taunted them from his high vantage point. ''Did you really think you could outsmart me?''
Fa Zhang and Jia Xu maintained their composure and even smiled a bit out of sight of Chen Gong. ''How long do we have to keep him occupied?'' Jia Xu asked his colleague.
''It will not be for long. Let's put a bit more pressure on him.'' Fa Zhang commented before he shouted, ''Bring the shields!''
As Brian's forces brought the shields and moved to the cover of those shields as a way to bypass the rain of arrows, Chen Gong sensed this didn't seem right. He knew the strategists well from reports, and he knew he just had to order Wen Chou and Yan Liang to come and attack from the front, rendering this entire strategy meaningless. There had to be a deeper meaning to this tactic...
Just as his mind was trying to decipher what was going on, he noticed the sly smile of Jia Xu behind the shields. His eyes narrowed, and then he realized it. However, before he could react, a messenger ran towards him, crouched down, and reported, ''Enemy reinforcement are moving to the flood gates! They are let by Sima Yi!''
''Further ahead, within sight of the floodgate base, Sima Yi gave commands. ''Secure the floodgates! we must release the water at once!'' His voice carried the urgency of their mission.
Zhang He danced gracefully through the enemy, while Jiang Wei made quick use of his tactical mind to position their forces effectively. Within moments, the floodgates were secured, and thousands of gallons of meltwater from the harsh winter surged forward. The water crashed into Xia Pi's castle easter gate and rammed it open without much resistance. Panic among Lu Bu's forces began to arise, and while trying to get on high ground, some soldiers were washed away by the rising waters.
''Curses! We need to reinforce the castle immediately! Retreat to the castle walls!''
~The front of Xia Pi castle.~
As the water began to rise, more of Lu Bu's soldiers began to realize the battle was not going in their favor. Yuan Shao, with his noble and commanding presence, rallied his troops. ''Do not let the enemy advance! Hold the line!''
Dong Zhou, known for his ruthlessness and cunning, fought with brutal efficiency. ''These wretches think they can defeat me? Crush them!'' He bellowed as he threw bombs and swung his weapon with deadly force.
Yan Liang and Wen Chou, known for their brute strength and combat prowess, were in the thick of the battle. As the commander officers that had caused the floodgates began to encircle them, Yan Liang roared as he fought, ''None shall pass! I will crush you all!''
Wen Chou, equally formidable, struck with cold precision. ''You face the might of Yuan Shao finest! Prepare yourself for your demise!'' He declared, his spear thrust finding their marks with deadly accuracy.
Seeing his forces being overwhelmed, defeated, and captured, Lu Bu realized that the battle outside of the castle did not go according to his victory. Despite their strength and ferocity, his generals could not hold out against Brian's officers. Inside the castle, Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan had captured Li Lingqi and Wei Xu, and in the east, Hua Xiong and Chen Gong could not hold the line and were captured as well.
Yet, Lu Bu's spirit remained unfazed. He cast a final glare at Brian as he whistled to summon his horse, took Red Hair's reigns, and rode towards the castle. Diao Chan was still in the castle, and he would not allow her any harm.
~The last stand.~
Inside Xia Pi Castle, Diao Chan stood in front of the last gate, her presence as calm and poised as ever. She watched as Lu Bu entered, colored in blood and drenched in sweat, but his eyes still burning with the desire to battle. Despite the upcoming defeat in this battle, he had gained what he had wished; a competitor he could give it his all against.
''My lord, are you alright?'' Diao Chan asked, not expecting her lord to lose. Yet, she was not distraught as she noticed that smile.
''I am fine. Thank you for worrying, Diao Chan. There will be a man coming here in a moment. His name is Brian. Do not attack him. Instead, can you pass a message to them?'' He asked, his voice extremely calm.
''I will, my lord.''
The floodwaters had begun to recede, leaving the castle grounds slippery and wet. Brian's army began to encircle and capture every officer and soldier but did not kill them. Their weapons were taken away, and they were brought to one of the fortresses for their punishment to come.
Diao Chan did not have to wait long for Brian and his army to arrive. She had expected he would turn his weapon on her, but the young lord seemed surprisingly calm as he walked towards her. "Lord Brian," she called, her tone filled with an unspoken plea. "I ask that you allow a final duel between you and Lord Lu Bu. He wishes to fight you one last time, honorably, without interference." Diao Chan's voice was soft yet commanding.
Brian looked at her, then at the officers behind him. They didn't have to say a word. Even his generals didn't say a word. They knew only he could answer this plea. Brian understood the gravity of this moment. His earlier fight had been a testament of will, and although he could have said he won that fight, it was not him alone. To recruit the legend that was Lu Bu, he had to prove his might against him, alone.
He turned back to Diao Chan, and nodded, ''I will accept this duel.'' then he turned around to his officers and commanded, ''If you wish to stay and see this fight, suit yourself. However, do not interfere in this fight.'' They nodded in acknowledgment.
The wooden doors opened, and Brian stepped forward.
There he was. Standing in the middle of the plaza of Xia Pi castle's inner gates. The beast. The myth. The legend himself.
He looked battered, bloodied, and tired. Yet, his gaze, his smile, and his posture were full of vigor. ''You are a worthy opponent, Brian Miller. Let's see if you can defeat me without any distractions.''
Brian nodded, raising his halberd, ''Let's finish this.''
Their clash was just one of many legends that would later be told long past this point in time. Where the battle between Zhao Yun. Xing Cai and Brian was already a story worth of legends, it paled in comparison to this fight.
The very foundations of Xia Pi castle trembled with each clash, and their halberds clashing echoed through the area. The tension was palpable, and some of the soldiers even forgot to breathe for moments as they continued to stare at the fight.
As the duel continued for a long time, not weakening in energy or intensity at all, some of the captured soldiers and officers asked if they could watch the duel. Lu Lingqi, Wei Xu, Hua Xiong, Chen Gong, and a few others were brought to the inner castle plaza, where they could observe the fight alongside the others.
For a moment, the war was completely forgotten. Chen Gong and Lu Lingqi, despite their defeat, watched the enormous grin on their lord and father's face, tears streaming down their faces without knowing why. Diao Chan's gaze was fixed on the duel, unable to look away.
Brian's body moved automatically, each strike sending tremors through him, yet he refused to submit to Lu Bu's relentless onslaught. Lu Bu, fighting beyond his physical limits, let his instincts take over.
The spectators felt like the fight could go on for hours and days. Thus, nobody expected what happened next.
With a well-placed strike, as Lu Bu's will finally began to wane, Brian disarmed him, sending the Soul Crusher flying across the courtyard. Exhausted, the beast of chaos fell to one knee, having given his all, and lost.
Seated on the ground, Lu Bu stared at his opponent, who simply returned the gaze, waiting. There was no weapon pointed at him, no gloating. Just a warrior's respect. Lu Bu saw his strategist, his daughter, and Diao Chan standing by, captured but unharmed. The honor of a fair fight despite the victory in grasp, and the lack of a desire to kill, spoke volumes. Understanding dawned on him.
He returned Brian's stare with respect, smiled, and with a voice full of admiration, said, "You are truly strong, Lord Brian. I yield to you. My life is yours."
Brian lowered his weapon, extending a hand to help Lu Bu up. "Join us, Lu Bu. Fight for a cause greater than yourself."
Lu Bu grasped Brian's hand firmly. "I will fight for you. You have my loyalty."
As the fight concluded, Brian's forces entered the castle grounds. Diao Chan's eyes shone with gratitude toward Brian, and even Chen Gong and Lu Lingqi showed no more resistance.
As Fa Zhang, Guo Jia, Sima Yi, and Jia Xu approached their lord, he commanded, "Secure the castle and ensure the prisoners are treated well. This battle is over."
His four strategists nodded, and within minutes, the entire castle mobilized. The battle of Xia Pi had ended, but Brian's job was far from done.
As Brian made his way to the prison fields the day after the battle of Xia Pi, his thoughts were filled with the weight of the previous day's events. The fallen soldiers had been given their due respect, their names etched into memory as a somber reminder of the cost of war.
Accompanied by Jia Xu, Xiahou Dun, and Dian Wei, who had joined him along the way, Brian approached the area where Lu Bu's forces were held. The atmosphere was tense, soldiers on edge as they watched their former enemies approach.
Lu Bu and Diao Chan stood nearby, a silent presence amidst the turmoil. Brian couldn't shake the feeling that convincing Dong Zhuo and Yuan Shao to join their cause would be no easy task. These were men who had always prioritized their own interests above all else.
Normally, he would start a talk with his officers present or ask questions. Brian didn't feel that would be a good start to convince the soldiers to be at ease. Instead, he picked two cups, sat in front of Lu Bu, and asked a guard to pour them some wine. As the cups were filled, Brian raised his cup and started. ''I have greatly enjoyed our fight yesterday, lord Lu Bu.''
''The feeling is mutual.'' Lu Bu replied gruffly, taking a sip of the wine. ''You're not half bad for a newcomer.''
Taking a chug of the glass himself, Brian let out a sigh of contentment before he decided to seize the moment. ''I hope to share more fights like that alongside you until the day we no longer have to.'' He continued, his gaze meeting Lu Bu's.
''Do you think you have the power to hold the reigns and bring peace to this land?'' Lu Bu asked gruffly once again.
''I do. But I rather like to be certain, than to guess.'' He responded as he smiled and repeated with different words his wish. ''Join me, and let's end this turmoil together, Lu Bu.''
Lu Bu studied Brian for a moment, his gaze piercing and unreadable. Then, to Brian's surprise, a hint of amusement flickered in his eyes. "You've got guts, I'll give you that," he remarked, a grudging respect evident in his tone. With a nod, Lu Bu raised his cup in a silent toast. "To future battles, then," he said, his voice rough but not unkind.
And with that simple gesture, the alliance was sealed, the unspoken understanding between two warriors far more powerful than any words could convey.
~An hour later.~
As Brian made his way to where Dong Zhou was being held, he couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. Convincing a man like Dong Zhou to join his cause would not be easy, nor did Brian know if he wanted to. His advisors, mainly Jia Xu, had been very clear Dong Zhou was a man not to be underestimated and could help well within creating a new land.
Approaching the prison field where Dong Zhou was held, he found the warlord lounging in the grass, a smirk playing at the corners of his lips. He had lost a considerable amount of weight, judging from his appearance. "Well, well, if it isn't the ambitious newcomer," Dong Zhuo remarked, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Ignoring the jab, Brian met Dong Zhuo's gaze evenly. "I'm sure you know why I'm here, Lord Dong Zhuo," he began, his voice betraying none of the uncertainty he felt. "But let's make one thing clear: I don't need you. I need someone who can prove their worth."
Dong Zhuo raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. "Oh? And what makes you think I'm not worth your time?" he asked, his smirk widening.
"Actions speak louder than words," Brian replied, his tone firm. "I need someone who can show me they're willing to put the greater good above their own self-interests."
Dong Zhuo chuckled, but there was a glint of determination in his eyes. "And what greater good would that be?" he asked, his tone mocking.
"My cause is simple," Brian replied, his gaze unwavering. "To bring peace and stability to this land, to end the chaos and suffering that has plagued it for far too long. But I won't hesitate to cut loose anyone who puts their own ambitions above that goal."
There was a moment of silence as Dong Zhuo considered Brian's words, weighing his options carefully. Then, to Brian's surprise, the warlord nodded slowly. "Very well," he said, a calculating gleam in his eyes. "Consider me on probation, newcomer. I'll prove my worth to you, one way or another."
And with that, the alliance was tentatively forged, both men knowing that trust would need to be earned through actions, not words.
~15 minutes later.~
The last man on Brian's agenda to convert to his own was Yuan Shao and his officers. He wasn't entirely sure how to recruit the nobleman himself, nor did he wonder if he should. Yuan Shao was a man full of honor and nobility, and although his legacy was quite impressive, Brian's image of his character was not good after all the games he played.
As Brian approached the temporary open field prison where Yuan Shao and his entourage were held, he couldn't help but feel a sense of caution. Though the soldiers and officers were unarmed and treated well, the presence of renowned warriors like Wen Chou and Yan Liang still added weight to the situation.
Yuan Shao stood at the forefront, his demeanor regal and commanding, flanked by his loyal followers. As Brian drew near, he could feel the weight of their scrutiny upon him.
"Ah, the ambitious upstart," Yuan Shao remarked, his voice carrying a hint of disdain as he eyed Brian. "What brings you to my presence?"
Ignoring the veiled hostility, Brian met Yuan Shao's gaze evenly. "Lord Yuan Shao, I come with a proposition," he began, choosing his words carefully. "But before we discuss that, I must be certain of your intentions."
Yuan Shao's expression hardened, and a murmur of discontent rippled through his entourage. Wen Chou and Yan Liang exchanged wary glances, but made no move to intervene.
"I doubt your commitment to my cause," Brian continued, his voice steady despite the tension in the air. "I've seen many ambitious men like yourself come and go, but few have shown the dedication and resolve needed to bring about real change."
The soldiers and officers listened intently, their demeanor respectful but guarded. Yuan Shao raised a hand, signaling for them to remain calm. ''You dare to question my loyalty?'' he demanded, his voice rising with indignation.
"I question everything until it's proven otherwise," Brian replied calmly, refusing to back down. "Actions speak louder than words, Lord Yuan Shao. If you truly wish to join my cause, you'll need to prove yourselves worthy of my trust."
There was a tense silence as Brian's words hung in the air, the tension palpable. Yuan Shao exchanged a meaningful glance with Wen Chou and Yan Liang before turning back to Brian.
"Very well," he said, his voice measured. "Consider it a test of our resolve, then. But know this, newcomer: we will not be swayed by mere words. Actions speak louder than words, and we shall prove ourselves worthy of your trust."
And with that, the conversation concluded, the delicate balance between trust and skepticism hanging in the air as Brian and Yuan Shao's army merged into one.
It had been three months since Brian left on his last campaign. Although his people worried at first about his safe return, once they heard of his accomplishments, their doubts quickly made way for hope. Hope that peace had finally become a reality.
When the news of his fight against the mighty Lu Bu rang through the land, his people were ecstatic. They couldn't believe their ears. Their lord, two years ago a nobody who they barely knew, was now a man formidable enough to bring the mighty Lu Bu to his knees. Minstrels and troubadours would tell the story of their battle for years to come, and poetry would be written about the glorious duel. Brian couldn't really care about any of that as he was just glad to be finally back home in the city he called his own.
With his army riding behind him, Brian entered the city of Jin Cheng after three months of traveling and battles. The people applauded and shouted his name in glory. For Brian or his oldest officers, this wasn't much of an impressive sight. To the newcomers, a whole new world opened up.
As they rode through the jubilant crowds, Liu Bei couldn't contain the stirring of emotions within him. "To think," he mused aloud, "that such fervor still exists in the hearts of the people... It's been so long since I've seen such unity."
Beside him, Liu Chan nodded in agreement, his gaze thoughtful. "Yes, Father," he replied softly. "It's a testament to the hope that Brian has inspired in them. His leadership has brought them together in ways we never could."
Liu Bei cast a grateful glance at his son, his heart swelling with pride. "Indeed," he murmured, "Brian's vision for peace has kindled a fire within them. It's a reminder to us all that there is still hope for the future, as long as there are those willing to fight for it."
Together, father and son rode on, their spirits buoyed by the sight of their people rallying behind a common cause. And amidst the cheers and applause, they found renewed determination to stand alongside Brian in the battles yet to come.
Cao Pi and Zhen Ji couldn't help but be taken aback by the grandeur of the scene before them. The streets were alive with activity, filled with the sounds of cheering and celebration.
"Look at this," Cao Pi remarked, his voice tinged with awe. "The people truly adore Brian. His leadership has won their hearts."
Zhen Ji nodded in agreement, her eyes sparkling with admiration. "Yes, it's quite remarkable," she replied. "To think that he's accomplished so much in such a short time... He truly is a force to be reckoned with."
A few paces ahead, Cao Cao, riding alongside Xiahou Dun and the other generals, glanced back at his son. He was familiar with such grand receptions, having experienced them in previous campaigns. Yet, seeing Cao Pi's genuine amazement filled him with a quiet happiness.
In this moment, Cao Cao felt a surge of pride. His son was witnessing the kind of respect and adulation that true leadership could inspire. It was a lesson not easily taught but best experienced firsthand. The sight of Cao Pi, impressed and inspired, reassured him that his legacy was in good hands.
As they continued to ride through the city, the cheers of the people resonating around them, Cao Cao allowed himself a rare smile, content in the knowledge that his son was on the path to greatness, alongside a worthy leader like Brian.
Lu Bu, ever the warrior, watched the scene with a critical eye. Yet, even he had to admit a sense of awe. "Such adoration," he muttered, half to himself. "This Brian has truly won the hearts of these people."
Diao Chan, riding gracefully beside him, smiled gently. "It's a testament to his leadership and vision," she said. "He has brought hope to these people, just as he has to us."
Behind them, Chen Gong observed the bustling city with a mix of curiosity and respect. "To think that such a place of prosperity and peace could exist in these turbulent times," he mused. "Brian's achievements are indeed remarkable."
Lu Lingqi, riding alongside her father, looked around with wide eyes. "Father, do you think we can find such peace here?" she asked, her voice filled with youthful hope.
Lu Bu glanced at his daughter, a rare softness in his eyes. "If anyone can bring it, it seems Brian can," he replied. "We will see if his vision holds true."
Chen Gong nodded in agreement. "For now, we follow his lead. This city, these people, they believe in him. And perhaps, in time, so will we."
As they continued through the city, the cheers growing louder and more enthusiastic, Lu Bu felt a strange sense of relief. His decision to join Brian, though initially driven by the desire for a worthy challenge, was starting to feel like the right choice. The sight of Diao Chan's serene smile and Lu Lingqi's hopeful gaze only reinforced his resolve.
Dong Zhuo, never one to be easily impressed, couldn't help but feel a grudging respect. Turning to his loyal officer, he grunted, "This Brian... he has done what many have failed to do. These people... they truly revere him."
His officer nodded, sharing in the awe. "It's a different kind of power, my lord. One that comes from the hearts of the people."
Dong Zhuo scoffed but did not disagree. "Power is power, regardless of its source. But this... it has a strength that even armies might envy."
Further along the line, Yuan Shao observed the scene with a mixture of admiration and reflection. He turned to his close followers, Wen Chou and Yan Liang, who rode beside him. "Look at this, my friends. A city united, its people filled with hope and joy. Brian has achieved something truly remarkable."
Wen Chou, always loyal, nodded. "Indeed, my lord. It is a sight to behold. Perhaps there is much we can learn from him."
Yan Liang, more pragmatic, added, "It is a testament to his leadership. Such unity and loyalty... it is something we should strive for."
Yuan Shao allowed a rare smile to grace his lips. "Perhaps, in following him, we might rediscover our own purpose and strength. This journey with Brian might be the path we need to find our own way to bring peace and order to the land."
As they continued through Jin Cheng, the cheers and adoration of the people resonated around them, both Dong Zhuo and Yuan Shao felt a shift within themselves. The journey ahead with Brian would undoubtedly be challenging, but the unity and hope they witnessed today kindled a spark of possibility. Perhaps, in this alliance, they could find a way to reshape their own legacies and contribute to the peace and prosperity that Brian sought for the land.
It was an early morning again, but Brian did not require much sleep. There was much he had to do after his three-month departure.
Brian wanted to bring his resources back to the city to develop it further, but his subordinates reassured him that those were not needed. The transport routes to the different resource sites, such as the rivers and the mines, were at constant full capacity, and the people worked hard to gather as many resources as possible. It helped that Brian would buy all the leftovers if the people could not get them sold, ensuring a significant reserve.
As he strolled through the bustling streets of Jin Cheng, Brian was greeted warmly by the townsfolk. The city's vibrancy was a testament to the prosperity and peace he had worked hard to cultivate.
''Lord Brian, welcome back!'' the first of the many blacksmiths in the city of Jin Cheng greeted him warmly. ''I am glad to see you back.''
''As am I. How is business, Zhang Tian?'' Brian replied with a smile.
''Incredible. I was afraid there wouldn't be enough for me to do with so many blacksmiths joining in the city, but business is booming.'' He grinned before he came closer and whispered, ''Thank you for placing Mr. Forgemaster at my shop. He is incredibly talented.''
''I thought so. Please continue to look after him,'' Brian thanked before he made his way towards the next destination.
Walking towards Gong Jo's residence, he encountered one of his newest officers. ''Oh, Lord Brian. I didn't see you.'' Wang Yi commented, a bit surprised as she nearly tripped over Brian's foot. She seemed a bit uncomfortable, still wearing her battle gear.
Brian just smiled as he responded, ''Don't worry about it, Lady Wang Yi.'' He momentarily stopped to examine her and added, ''Is this all the clothing you possess, lady Wang Yi?''
''It has been a while since these weren't required. I fear only have similar outfits with me,'' She confessed. ''I was hoping to buy something here, but I have yet to find my way around.''
''Allow me to accompany you then. I remember a good shop with something fitting for you.'' Brian offered without much thought.
Wang Yi looked momentarily surprised before she smiled and replied, ''That would be very helpful. Please, lead the way.''
As the duo walked towards the shopping district, Brian continued the conversation, ''I can see why you would get lost here. To think it has only been a little over a year since I started the city's development plans.'' Brain spoke with a sense of satisfaction.
''What was it like back then?'' Wang Yi asked curiously, not picturing it could be any less impressive than what it already was.
Brian thought for a moment before he asked, ''Your birth town is Tian Shui, right? I think Lingtai would be a good comparison before I send Li Hui to reinforce the basics.''
The shocked expression Wang Yi showed had Brian by surprise. ''Lingtai?! But..How?! There is nothing there. This place on the other hand is so lively. It is almost like a dream.''
Brian smiled. ''I had talented people help me rebuild this land. It seems the conditions were just right for this city to flourish, although there is still much left to be done,'' he responded before he guided Wang Yi to the left road junction.
''But... A year? That is so fast..'' Wang Yi muttered in amazement and disbelief.
''It seems that people are willing to work for a better future if they have hope for it. I have to admit, that I had a lot of luck with having talented people surrounding me.'' Brian explained with satisfaction.
''But how did you discover those talents? Surely, those people didn't just cross your path.'' Wang Yi wondered.
Brian's hand softly guided Wang Yi through a crowd, and as they finally stepped out of it, he answered, ''If you know what to look for, talent is everywhere. We are finally here.'' Wang Yi turned around to see a small and colorful shop. I did not look fancy at all, but she would later realize that was not needed at all. ''Please step in and ask for Liu Mei. Tell her I have shown you this place.''
''Understood. Thank you, my lord.'' She bowed before she walked to the front door, and stepped in.
Brian knew his subordinate was in good hands. After all, the hanfu he currently wore was of the same maker, and he had no complaints about it. He also knew Liu Mei did not make much effort for advertising; she was just that good.
He continued to scroll through his city as he saw Kong Rong and other scholars discussing various objects inside the academy. The construction of several rooms was done, but there was still a lot left to be desired. Brian's soldiers were constantly on the move, either moving building material or teaching material.
The library was slowly getting bigger and closer to being finished, and the literature being saved and stored there started to pile up. A new face had decided to see the facility himself. ''Lord Brian.'' The covered strategist bowed with a bow.
''Please don't be so formal. I have never been good with formalities.'' Brian commented as he checked the scrolls on the table. ''Oh, they have written our strategy of the Wu Zhang Plains battle.''
''It is an exhilarating battle, to say the least.'' he complimented, slightly muffled by his shrouded face. ''A multi-layered tactic that aims at multiple weak points of the enemy. It is an abrupt change in tactic as well, thus obviously it caught lord Zhuge Liang and Lord Sima Yi by surprise.''
Pang Tong seemed impressed but did not look excited to join the same side as Brian. Feeling that, Brian asked, ''Is something the matter, Master Pang Tong?''
Pang Tong hesitated before he asked, ''Who are you, lord Brian?''
Brian looked confused. ''What do you mean?''
Pang Tong put his index finger on the scrolls. ''This battle was your first major battle. Lu Su is a well-known strategist, and Sun Quan is a strong leader. He had the high ground, and you should have the advantage in this battle. Yet, he was defeated in just two days by a three-way impingement. How did you deploy such a tactic as your first battle?''
Intrigued, Brian sat alongside Pang Tong and returned his gaze. ''You know who I am. What do you really want to know?''
Pang Tong pointed at the next scroll and continued, ''This is the battle of Tian Shui, your second major battle. This was the second battle in which you were at a disadvantage, this time in numbers. Normally, fortification and a siege would be the best tactic. In some scenarios, a fire attack would work well. No, you decided to attack head-on, divine, conquer, and ambush where you could.'' Brian said nothing, and instead waited for his question to be answered. ''Until these battles, your name had remained unknown until now. How does such a talent remain hidden for so long, only to emerge and show these tactics in mere weeks?''
Brian looked a bit troubled. ''I could tell you, but I am unsure if you would believe me. Even if I would tell you and you would believe me, what is the value of that knowledge?'' He asked.
Brian's tone was calm, and he sounded as if he didn't mind the question, but just really wanted to know why it was relevant. Pang Tong hesitated and eventually shrugged his curiosity away. ''It is just the curiousness of the mystery.'' he chuckled as he added, ''Now I see why people keep asking what is behind my mask.''
Brian smiled. ''Perhaps one day, we can share our little secrets. I am looking forward to the day that we can.'' Before he stood up and bid Pang Tong goodbye.
He continued to stroll through the city, checking how the construction of every last important building was going. Content, he returned in the late afternoon to his home. He saw his wife play with Azeil in their garden, displaying a beautiful smile. Sun Shang Xiang had not even noticed him, as she continued to play tag with the giant kitten. Careful with my wife, Azeil. She might not be fragile, but you are still much stronger.
Lian Shi was assisting Sun Quan with the River Dragon's company, which the young tiger had created to make transport ships for the Yellow River. It was a booming business, where many guards, businessmen, and others who wanted to enjoy the possibilities of safe travels had taken an interest in the service. That meant it was just Sun Shang Xiang and him here this evening.
Brian checked the area around him and concluded only the three of them were present. Thus, he kicked his uncomfortable shoes off, crouched down, and sneaked to the playing duo. ''Got you now!'' Sun Shang cheered as she was about to grab Azeil.
''Nah, I got you!'' Brian exclaimed as he grabbed Sun Shang by surprise and lifted her. Sun Shang shrieked before she noticed who it was, and smiled.
''You are finally back! I missed you.'' She greeted him warmly, hugging him above the shoulders. ''Are you done for today?''
''Yeah, I am.'' Brian smiled back. ''So I hope I can join a little game of tag with you and Azeil here?''
Azeil growled in approval. Sun Shang Xiang did not hesitate as she tapped him, ran away with Azeil, and shouted, ''You're it!''
The tag game lasted a whole two hours until dinner was served. Azeil returned to his cage at the stables, resting until the next morning. Brian and Sun Shang Xiang walked back, hand in hand. Despite darkness covering the land and the moon settling high on the horizon, Jin Cheng was still as lively as ever.
Brian was smiling, as usual, just enjoying the surroundings of his ever-growing city. Sun Shang Xiang looked a bit worried though.
The hierarchy in a family of statues like the Sun family was very clear. Brian was the patriarch of the house, and she was the matriarch. Her future children would stand below them, followed by the concubines and their children. That is where it went wrong.
Lian Shi and Xing Cai were concubines in the truest sense, but the other two were married. By law, they could not become concubines and both family names held a significant value, both in political power and Brian's army. Sun Shang Xiang did not like to be a traditional housewife but she wanted to give Brian the stability he earned. Yet, in this situation, she doubted she could give him that.
''What's the matter, Shangxiang?'' Brian asked as he saw the struggles in her eyes, yet could not place them.
Shangxiang looked around before she asked, ''Can we talk in private?''
Brian nodded and guided her to the riverbanks, where they could see the unfinished foundations of the Tongquetai. It was late in the evening, so there was no one here, meaning they had the privacy to talk. ''We should be fine here. What do you want to ask me?'' Brian softly asked.
Shangxiang was hesitant at first, but eventually asked, ''Have you ever thought about our future?''
Brian looked a bit troublesome as he stared at the unfinished foundations. ''I have,'' He answered with a sense of guilt in his voice. ''During our latest campaign, it was constantly on my mind.''
Shangxiang looked puzzled. She assumed this was what Lian Shi and Brian had talked about in Guan Du. ''What did you think about?'' Brian looked troubled. He had tried his thoughts once, but he didn't know if the same explanation would work with his wife. Would she look weird at him, or even judge him? Lian Shi had consulted him and told him not to worry about Shangxiang's love. Yet, there was also a little voice shouting in the back of his mind that things could change within a snap.
He was caught by surprise when Shangxiang asked, a bit fearful, ''Am I a burden to you, lord Brian?''
Brian's hand moved almost immediately to her face, and as his hand caressed her cheek, he declared, ''You are never a burden to me. It is just... what I am going to tell you may sound ridiculous but it is the truth.''Brian stared into Shangxiang's eyes as he explained, ''The battle of Jieting is the first time we have ever met. However, I already knew your name way long before that battle, and it was not the first time I saw you.'' Sun Shang Xiang looked confused but did not waver as she held Brian close. ''I knew you already from another future. A future I was not part of.''
''What do you mean by that?'' Shangxiang asked.
Brian looked hesitated again before he admitted his secret. ''I have a unique gift to know a certain future from you, and the others. I have seen that future develop, where marriage, betrayal, war, and chaos were a constant occasion. As I said, I was not part of that future, thus you did not meet me. Instead, you married Liu Bei.''
''Liu Bei? Why would ever marry him?'' She asked puzzled.
''It was a political marriage to unite Wu and Shu together to form a defense against Wei,'' Brian explained. ''I never learned how that marriage eventually was for you, but I don't want to find out either.''
The puzzle pieces fell into place as she remembered Lian Shi's words, He was conflicted about uniting the land solely for you, after all. She internally repeated. He did not want to recruit Liu Bei in fear of losing me. But...
''That is amazing!'' Shangxiang exclaimed. ''Please tell me more! What happened with Lianshi in that future?'' She asked enthusiastically, completely forgetting her worries for a moment.
''She became Sun Quan's concubine,'' Brian answered, slightly taken aback by his wife's happy outburst. ''She continued to support Wu after your brother's death.''
''So Shi and Quan together? Hm...I don't see it.'' She commented before she turned to her husband and asked, ''How about Cai?''
She is too curious. She is just like a big cat. Brian thought as he answered, ''She married Lord Liu Shan and became the empress of Shu.''
Shangxiang, knowing how much of a warrior Xing Cai could be, couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of that tough girl wearing extremely decent clothes and having to join shitty parties. But as she thought about the concubine, her familiar concern popped up again.
She looked at her husband again, who was waiting for the question to be answered with an awkward smile. She retook her calmness, stared her love into his eyes, and exclaimed, ''Thank you for worrying about me and sharing this secret with me. There might have been a different future where I married Liu Bei or Lian Shi belonging to Sun Quan, but it is not this one. In this future, we belong to you.'' She looked worried and added, ''But I am not sure how that would work... Lady Chunhae and Lady Ying are married... but they want to be your concubines as well...How is that supposed to work?''
''Wasn't it smart to ask that before you ambushed me with the five of you?'' Brian jokingly asked.
''Be serious, dummy! I wasn't thinking back then, but I want to build a family with you now.'' She blurted out, only to blush as red as a tomato.
Brian looked a bit surprised by that outburst, but he was happy. He may be young, but to have a woman care for himself this much that she was worried for their future and stated that she wanted to be together as a family made him very pleased. He pulled her even closer, and whispered, ''We will make it work. I believe you, and if you are uncertain, ask them for advice. It is not bad to ask for help so now and then.'' Brian grinned as he added, ''When the need arises, I could always ask the Emperor to make an exception for us.''
Shangxiang was worried for so long but had not considered that possibility. The fact her husband was so close to the Emperor he could ask for such a thing was extraordinary. Just those few words were a power move none could come counter. Shangxiang felt relieved, came closer, and commented, ''We can return home now.''
It did not take long to get home from the riverbanks, and as they made their way back to their house, a huge weight fell from Brian's shoulders. He had told his wife the reason for his uncertainty, and she had responded by kicking all his uncertainties out of his head. She loved him, unconditionally. And he loved her.
A servant closed the gate behind them as they entered inside. Another servant closed the door and welcomed them when they finally got in. ''Thank you, Mu Ta. You are dismissed.'' Brian commanded the head servant.
''Yes, my lord. You heard it ladies. Dismissed.'' She ordered the other servants present. The ladies, who all looked blessed in good clothes, and with healthy appearance, left in a well-mannered quickness. Shangxiang did not question her lord's quick dismissal of the servants, but she did wonder why he sent them away so quickly. However, before she could even ask, Brian pulled her close.
''My lord?'' She asked, happy but startled.
He leaned to her ear and murmured, "My love, let's start building a family right now."
Sun Shang Xiang looked bewildered. She had been the one who initiated their love-making sessions most of the time, but now she was on the receiving end. She felt her heart race as she stared into his eyes, seeing them full of love and desire. She felt a combination of nervousness, anticipation, and happiness. "Right now?" she whispered back, her voice soft and teasing.
"Yes, right now," Brian replied, his gaze unwavering. "I want to create a future with you, right here, right now. This is our beginning, and I am ready for all that comes with it."
Shangxiang's eyes softened with understanding and determination. "Then let this be our beginning, together," she said, her voice filled with quiet certainty. "For our family, for us."
Author Notes:
This was it for chapter 16.
Before I start my entire summary, I want to acknowledge that I used ChatGPT for grammar and to visualize my wording into a good story. My mind was a bad space for a long time, so I greatly accepted the help it provided.
We finally reached Lu Bu and the battle of Xia Pi. I have been waiting for a long time to write this battle, and I hope it did not disappoint. I certainly loved finally putting my thoughts onto paper. Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors Ambition mode is actually terrible, so I had to upgrade him a bit to his story counterpart.
I also realized we have a lot of characters we have yet to develop, so I will be making a chapter where Brian will just engage with his subordinates. Lastly, strengthening the bond between Sun Shang Xiang and Brian, with some historically accurate facts about wife and concubines.
That was it for chapter 16, and I hope to see you legends in the next one.
