March 6th.
Hiruzen and Iruka both looked over the photo given to them for his ninja ID and gave a nod of approval.
"Very good. Though, I wish you would smile. It makes me think you're planning my assassination.
Naruto rolled his eyes at the Hokage's words: " The photographer was getting on my nerves. I tried to come in with a positive attitude, but it was hard when the guy kept going back and forth on his camera and kept telling me to stand up and move the stool over because he wanted a 'better shot.'
Hiruzen sighed and smiled. "Whatever the case, you look good. And I like your new outfit.
Naruto looked down and gave a slight smirk. "it is nice. A gift from Jiraiya.
Iruka looked at the outfit closely. a black and orange sweater that he had unzipped, and a dark grey shirt. the boy's chainmail could be seen where the v-neck opened up, and he had his headband on as well. his pants were dark as well.
Hiruzen nodded. "well, it's better than what you had on before. much better. you can come and collect your ID after a few weeks when it's done processing.
Naruto nodded and went to stand when the door flung open, and a little kid came rushing in.
"Old man, I challenge you!" the boy yelled, running into the room with his shuriken in hand. "I am going to defeat you and become the fifth Hokage! prepa-ACK!
The boy slipped on his sweater just at the desk, and Naruto's brow twitched up at the sight.
Hiruzen sighed and had half a mind to check on his grandson when the boy shot up, holding his face and groaning, and not even a second later, the boy's charge came rushing to the door.
"Konohamaru, there you are! i told you not to run off!" yelled Ebisu.
Konohamaru growled at his own misfortune, the embarrassment too great. Surely he had been tripped, but by whom?
The child's gaze fell on Naruto, and he glared, marching up to him. Ebisu tensed up at Konohamaru stomping his way towards the village pariah. 'Of course, the Nine-Tailed fox. The worst kind of company.' thought the instructor.
Konohamaru was in Naruto's face at this point and shoved an accusatory finger at Naruto's head. "it was you, wasn't it?! you're the one that tripped me!
Naruto scowled and gripped the boy by the arm, raising him up to eye level. "i'm not in the mood, kid. go bother someone else before i demolish you.
Hiruzen shook his head while Iruka facepalmed. "this is not good.
Ebisu ran into the room in that very moment. "unhand the Third Hokage's grandson this instant!
Konohamaru smirked, thinking Naruto would relent, but the boy wasn't even given the time to be smug when he was lifted upside down and shaken, his ninja tools falling out of his pocket.
Ebisu gave a yell of panic, and Naruto tossed the boy, to which Ebisu dove to catch him. "you fiend! do you know who this is?!
Naruto simply waved the trainer off as he left the room. "i know who he is.
The door closed, and Ebisu growled as he set the dazed boy back on the ground.
"That boy. I swear I'll-!
"let it go Ebisu. Konohamaru is unharmed. that's the boy from the Mizuki incident. i wanted to be here to ensure he was ok and insisted that we not be disturbed. i wanted to talk with him some more, but you failed to keep an eye on Konohamaru.
Ebisu paled and gave a deep bow. "i apologize Lord Hokage. Konohamaru is a slippery one.
"who was that guy?" asked Konohamaru as he collected his things.
Ebisu shook his head. "no one you want to affiliate yourself with, i assure you.
Ebisu turned back to the Hokage and gave another bow of apology before moving to grab his charge. only to find that he disappeared. 'huh?! Konohamaru?!
Iruka facepalmed for the second time, and Hiruzen sighed. "you need to watch him, Ebisu. i think he went after Naruto.
Ebisu raced out the door in that very instance. "absolutely not! Konohamaruuuuu!
Hiruzen shook his head. "that's not how i wanted that to go. i didn't have a chance to ask how the boy was really feeling after the incident.
Iruka nodded and glanced at his casted arm. "don't worry. i'll pay him a visit later today and report.
Hiruzen gave a grateful smile. "i would greatly appreciate it.

Konohamaru would trail Naruto throughout the day, keeping his distance, his curiosity getting the better of him. that, and he didn't want to sit in on another lecture from Ebisu.
he followed the boy all the way to the training ground and sat in on the older boy's training.
what he witnessed had him excited.
it seemed that this kid was some kind of elite ninja, and was practicing some super secret defensive technique.
of course, Naruto was finally taking the time to try and find a viable solution to his seal for his barrier armament.
he had his clones fire off a water jutsu, and he would use his barrier to see if it would last more than one use, yet he couldn't find the solution to his problem.
an hour of training later, Naruto was drenched, sitting at his scroll and scratching off the last draft before scoffing. 'what a waste. not one of these proved to be the one. can i really not improve this seal?
Naruto turned towards the forest and decided to call out his audience. "c'mon out kid, i know you're there.
Konohamaru jumped out of the bushes with stars i his eyes. "you knew i was in there the whole time?
Naruto raised a brow at that. "why are you here? shouldn't you be with your trainer?
Konohamaru scowled. "he's my tutor. not my trainer. and i just wanted to see who you were.
Naruto sighed and stood up, walking to his backpack, and Konohamaru spoke again. "and now that i have, can you be my trainer?
Naruto turned to him. "no.
"huh?! why not?! pretty please! c'mon boss, give me a chance!
Naruto grabbed a bottle of water and took a drink, taking in the look on the kid's face. "the answer is still no. i can't imagine the trouble i would-... did you just call me boss?
Konohamaru saw his opportunity, and practically manifested in the blonde's personal space. "yeah! you're gonna be my teacher, right? so your the boss!
Naruto looked away, trying to process this. 'having a little assistant running around and helping him couldn't hurt. but the villagers seeing him with the honorable grandson of the 3rd Hokage could be bad.
he turned to say no, but the look Konohamaru was giving him made him second guess himself. 'i'm going to regret this, i know i am.' "fine.
"YES! you won't regret this! I promise!
Naruto smirked. 'i sure hope not.

it was 2:00 now, and Naruto actually treated the kid to some food while trying to find out what Konohamaru was capable of as a ninja in training.
"so the transformation jutsu is all you know?
Konohamaru nodded. "though, i'm not very good at it. my chkra control is abysmal. at least, that's what Ebisu says.
Naruto seemed to stare through Konohamaru in that instance, and the boy didn't know why, but he could tell that he was. "w-what? what's with that look.
Naruto blinked and realized he was staring.
he leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms, smirking. "sorry. I was feeling out your chakra reserves. it's a trick I can do as a sensory type, but it requires concentration.
Konohamaru had stars in his eyes all over again and leaned forward. "really?! you can sense chakra?!
Naruto nodded. "your reserves are well above average for your age, so you have potential. a lot of it.
Konohamaru leaned forward, and Naruto felt a sense of... something. he couldn't tell what he was feeling, but it was a good feeling. to have someone look up to you and hang on every word. he was seeing himself in this kid, and himself as Jiraiya. 'strange.
"ok. listen carefully. before you can learn any cool jutsu, we need to get your chakra under control. that means-
"no, no, no! No exercises! i want to learn those cool techniques you were doing!
Naruto smiled at that. 'yeah. he's like me.
"Konohamaru. listen. believe it or not, the only way to learn those cool techniques is to get a hold of your chakra first. the basics come first. you don't have the skill set necessary to learn the more advanced techniques yet.
Konohamaru nodded reluctantly. "fine. i'll train.
"Good. i'll show you an easy way to get through the annoying bit, then i'll teach you something really cool. but i need you to be patient. deal?
Konohamaru nodded and brought his hand out for Naruto to shake.
Naruto looked at it and scoffed. "we don't shake hands. we fist bump.
Naruto gave the boy his fist and the boy tapped it in a rhythmic pattern and grinned.
Naruto couldn't help the grin on his own face.
it wasn't long before their food arrived, and they ate. all the while, Konohamaru asked Naruto to share his story.

"You fought a chuunin?!
Naruto shushed the boy on the way out of the store. "keep it down kid!" he whispered harshly.
"you fought a chuunin and won?!" Konohamaru whispered loudly.
Naruto shook his head, sighing at his inability to keep quiet. "yeah.
"you have to tell me all about it! tell me!
Naruto smirked at that and began recounting the events. naturally, he left out all the nasty bits, and the part where he was afraid for his life. but he did mention that he had help from Iruka.
the two went to the top of the Hokage Monument and sat at the park a ways from the cliffside.
"ok. this is a good spot.
Konohamaru watched as Naruto walked up the side of a tree, and was shocked.
"you can do that thing that ninjas do?!
Naruto chuckled. "tree climbing. and yeah. i can even do it on water.
Konohamaru got closer and stared at the blonde, shocked by this. "you're like super strong.
Naruto rubbed the back of his head and smirked. "yup. and don't you forget it. very soon, i'm going to make you strong too, and we'll start with the exercise that got me to this point.
Konohamaru nodded, excited.
that excitement was snuffed out when he was introduced to the leaf exercise. not fun at all.
it took an hour for Naruto to get Konohamaru to cooperate, and only barely managed it. this was a huge test on his patience, but it was worth it.
he had no idea how true this was because right now, the Hokage was watching the two do the exercise through his crystal ball, and the old man had a look of pride to see his surrogate grandson bringing up his biological grandson. it was a touching thing.

it took a while, but Ebisu found them.
he was annoyed beyond belief and was ready to give the tongue-lashing of a lifetime. but then he saw them.
Konohamaru was actually meditating, doing the exercise he could never get the boy to do, it was mind-boggling,
his gaze went straight to Naruto, and he glared down at what he deemed to be an unfit teacher for the 3rd Hokage's grandson, but his gaze softened a bit. 'to think that the ninetails brat would be capable of influencing Konohamaru in such a positive direction. absurd!
Ebisu jumped down into the clearing and noticed that the blonde had his eyes on him already, as though he knew he was there already. 'how could he sense me?! he isn't a sensor. i've studied the Ninetails fox kid. he's a class clown, a degenerate!
"that was a cold stare you directed at me, Ebisu-san. something wrong?" spoke Naruto in a dry tone.
Konohamaru opened his eyes, confused as to why Naruto is talking to himself all of a sudden when he saw Ebisu.
"ok Konohamaru. playtime is over. time to go home."
Konohamaru stared up at the man for a moment before hiding behind Naruto. "absolutely not! Naruto is my new teacher now!
Ebisu went red. "unacceptable! do you know who you're dealing with Konohamaru?! he's a delinquent! a trouble maker! a failure! he is not qualified to teach anyone, especially not you!
Konohamaru simply hugged Naruto's side. "no!
Ebisu's brow twitched in annoyance, and the calm but smug look on Naruto's features only made it worse. "you say I'm a bad influence, but as you can see, Konohamaru is doing quite well under my watch. he's even doing the boring leaf exercise.
"with the promise of free ice cream!
Naruto's brow twitched at that. "let me do the talking, please.
"s-sorry."
Ebisu shook his head. "Konohamaru. this delinquent could never raise you to be the next Hokage. i assure you that i know all the ins and outs of being a shinobi, and know the fastest route to-
"cut the bullshit. there is no fast pass to Hokage. saying such is an insult to all the Kage that came before. it's disrespectful.
Ebisu bristled at that. "excuse me you brat?! what could you know?! you are a fresh out of the academy genin, whereas i am an elite! a Jonin!
Naruto crossed his arms. "there is no easy path to Hokage Konohamaru. i promise you this. it comes down to the vote of the people, your accomplishments, your strengths and sacrifices, and so much more. being Hokage entails a lot more than training under this guy. you need to understand how the village is run, why it runs the way it does, how you can improve upon the current state of affairs. how to manage the budget, what missions to accept, and so much more.
Naruto turned to Konohamaru. "I would know, because i want to be Hokage one day to. however, it is not my dream. just an ambition. i'm not sure i could make it. but i know that you can. you have the heritage for it. you just need to work hard, and work smart.
Konohamaru nodded, and Ebisu scoffed. "enough of this. Konohamaru, we're leaving this instant!
Konohamaru was about to protest, but Naruto put a hand on his shoulder. "just keep practicing and find me when you need help. you'll be fine from here.
Ebisu gritted his teeth as Konohamaru gave a bow to Naruto and went to his side. he'll need to reeducate Konohamaru all over again thanks to this kyuubi brat.
"Let us go, Konohamaru. you have spent too much time with this delinquent as is.
Konohamaru rolled his eyes and waved at Naruto. "bye Naruto! i'll see you tomorrow!
"Absolutely not!" yelled Ebisu as they walked away.
Naruto gave a soft smile and waved back. "i think that kid got rid of my depression. if only a little.

1 week later.
{Land of Fire, Konohagakure, The Haruno residence }
March 13th.
Sakura was tying her headband in various ways, trying to find the best placement that flattered her hair, face, and eyes. She had it all worked out.
she tied the headband in such a way that it wouldn't get in the way of her features, having out of the way and on top of her hair, hidden by her bangs.
she did a few poses in the mirror, admiring herself with a charming smile and a look of excitement in her eyes. it was time. she had officially graduated and would be placed on a team.
her heart pounded at the thought, and she placed a hand on her chest. 'lady luck, please be on my side today, please.
It was nerve-racking to think about the prospect of not being on the same team as her crush, but she had a chance. Her grades are top-notch, after all.
she gave one more once over and smiled, feeling confident.
"Sakura! Aren't you supposed to be heading out by now?
a tic mark formed on Sakura's forehead, and she glared at her door. "I know! I'm on my way out now!
'geez! i'm a ninja now! a legal adult in the eyes of the village, and she's still on my back like a shadow!

Sakura walked out her front door, her mom there with a camera, her dad simply shaking his head at his wife's antics.
"Mom! Why do you always insist on embarrassing me?!
Sayuri Haruno ignored her and gave her a hug, and Sakura relented. ' At least it isn't Dad being clingy.
"Sakura, my sweet little flower! your father and I are so proud of you! be safe and listen to your sensei always, ok?
"of course, Mom."
Her mom gave her another hug before her dad hugged her next, and he kissed her cheek. "I know you'll do your best, sweetie."
Sakura wiped away the lipstick mark left by her mom, but did so with a smile.
she turned to her dad, and he gave her a hug as well.
after the goodbyes were said, she took her path to the academy, thinking of a way to maybe get Sasuke's attention.
and then she showed up.
Ino came from around the corner where their paths seemed to always cross on the way, and the girl gave her a challenging stare as they walked side by side.
"good morning Sakura.
"good morning Ino."
the two girls walked down the path, bantering back and forth, and the pace of their strides got faster and faster until it was a race to the academy.
the two pushed anyone unlucky to be in their path, and from the classroom, it sounded like a stampede was headed their way.
the two rushed faster and faster, but when Ino saw Hinata was in their path, she halted, Sakura being unlucky and flying down the stairs and straight for the girl.
she closed her eyes and waited for the inevitable crash, but was caught effortlessly by the Hyuuga girl.
"a-ah, thanks Hi-.
the withering glare being given by the Hyuga said it all, and Sakura jumped out of her arms with Ino laughing at her from behind.
"is this how Kunoichi are to conduct themselves?" asked Hinata stoically.
Sakura sighed, but before she could defend herself, Hinata walked past them.
she frowned at her classmate, who she'd never actually gotten along with for many, many reasons, one of which being that, like most girls, she was afraid she'd steal Sasuke from her. After all, though she'd never admit it, she's the most sought out in class for her looks. and she has... actual assets.
Sakura scowled at the thought and erased them, shaking her head. on the bright side, she had something to brag about. "well. at least i won the race and can claim my prize.
Ino glared. excuse me? umm. i won, you simply couldn't stop on time and it cost you.
Sakura glared at Ino as they walked down the stairs. "get real. we both know i was easily more than a foot ahead.
they stopped their rambling when they realized the seat they were to fight over was occupied by a sleeping Naruto.
Sakura glared, but it quickly softened into one of surprise, and Ino couldn't believe her eyes. 'he changed his outfit?
Sakura gripped the boy's cheek and the boy blinked at the sting. "ow!"
Naruto blinked a few times before focusing on the culprit. "S-Sakura-chan?
"get up. we want the seat.
Naruto blinked and sighed. 'she's always like this. i don't understand what's with this abuse. it's getting on my nerves at this point, crush or not!
Naruto scratched his head at that. "w-well. i was here first. if you want, i could scooch over, and you-
"Absolutely not! get up and get lost! i won this seat by right of competition!
Naruto stared at the girl in confusion, and Ino chided in. "no, you didn't win. i did, i came through the door first!
Another girl stood up, overhearing the commotion. "nuh uh, I was here before both of you; the seat should be mine, move it, class clown!
Another girl stood up, rushing over as well. "well i was here before any of you!
and all hell broke loose.
Shikamaru shook his head at the antics of the girls, feeling bad for Naruto. "i told you sitting over there would be a bad idea. but noooo. ignore the red flags, sit next to the chick magnet.
though, he glanced over his shoulder to a laughing Kiba and knew Naruto would be miserable over here as well. he's obviously tired, and just wanted sleep. Kiba would have robbed him of his nap.
Naruto was before a sea of raging fangirls, all arguing over the boy next to him, and the boy couldn't help but glare in his direction.
he went to get up, but the Uchiha gripped his jacket. "don't you dare. you escalated this bullshit, and now you'll be my meat shield." Sasuke whispered while trying to act natural.
Naruto glared at the Uchiha. "the hell i will!" Naruto gritted out. "i just wanted sleep, i didn't sign up to be your fangirl repellent! let go!
Naruto yanked back, and accidentally bumped Sakura into Ino, and the two ended up contacting one another.
Sasuke and Naruto whirled at the sound of gasps, and the two girls were gagging and spitting. An accidental kiss.
'oh shit.' thought Naruto as both girls glared daggers at him.
"Now you've done it, Uzumaki!" yelled Sakura as she lunged, and Naruto was forced to huddle up and block Sakura's onslaught as she wailed at him, not doing much damage, though.
Kiba felt like he was dying. he couldn't breath with how much he was laughing, and Shikamaru was in the same boat. he never imagined Sakura and Ino getting into such a tizzy on accident, and all thanks to Naruto.
Chouji was just confused at the sight, wondering what would have possessed them to fight so hard. he was too focused on eating the newest brand of his favorite snack to care, trying to find out if he likes the brand's ne flavor or not. maybe two more bags will decide the verdict.
Naruto, after having endured enough, yelled, "Will you get off of me?!"
"EVERYONE TO YOUR SEATS!" yelled Iruka.
The class scattered, and though Ino lingered for a moment, seeing that Sakura secured the seat next to Naruto reluctantly, she made her way to the closest seat she could find.
Iruka shook his head. "what has gotten into you all?! Starting today you are shinobi of the Leaf! Not some untamed little children! You all need to set an example for those who come after!
"yes, sensei." was the collective answer of the class, all looking embarrassed or indifferent.
Iruka sighed and sat down with his paper to make a few announcements.

Meanwhile, the Hokage and the collective Jonin present were all watching the scene unfold and were either amused or disappointed.
Kakashi was watching the students assigned to him with indifference, looking between Sasuke, Sakura, and Naruto. 'i'm not looking forward to this.
Kurenai could see Kakashi's obvious annoyance in having three kids under him and looked back to the students under her. 'the least i can say is that mine will be easy to deal with. Hinata i someone i personally babysat when she was young. Shino is quiet, and Kiba seems easy enough to influence. i feel bad for you Kakashi. stuck with a fangirl and the kyuubi kid.
Asuma's thoughts were similar to his peers, but he unlike Kurenai, he read the file on Naruto since his father always talked about him, and found that there was a lot more than meets the eye. that, and he's the only other jonin here that believes that Iruka wasn't over exaggerating the story of Naruto helping to take out Mizuki.

Iruka had just informed the class of why Mizuki wouldn't be here, but did it in a vague sense, and then quickly moved on.
"now. as for the results of this year's rookie of the year, that title goes straight to Sasuke Uchiha.
The boys in the class went up in reluctant applause whereas the girls went crazy.
Naruto winced at Sakura cheering beside him.
"and as for the Kunoichi of the year, that title goes to Hinata Hyuuga.
the class had a much more equal reception, with the boys being the ones cheering more than the girls.
Neither the rookie nor the kunoichi cared for the title. it was obvious from the way they were both so apathetic towards it.
"ok. with that being said, it's time for team placement.
Everyone seemed to perk up at the same time.
Sakura fiddled with her hands, her heart beating faster at the prospect. 'oh my goodness, oh my goodness. please please please let me be on the same team as Sasuke! please please!
Ino was thinking the exact same thing.
"team 7 will be Naruto Uzumaki-" Naruto perked up at his name being called. "Sakura Haruno-" Naruto felt a bit of joy that he'd be on the same team as Sakura, and almost jumped for joy, but seeing her slump and look visibly dejected made him pause." and Sasuke Uchiha."
Naruto's eye twitched, and Sakura jumped for joy. "YES! all is fair in love in war, Ino! it looks like Kami favors me today, i-
SIT DOWN SAKURA! I'M NOT FINISHED! Yelled Iruka using his big head Jutsu.
The entire class laughed as Sakura nearly hid under the desk in fright of her teacher's wroth.
Iruka sighed as he read out the roster again. "team seven will consist of Uzumaki Naruto, Haruno Sakura, and Uchiha Sasuke. Your Jonin sensei is Kakashi Hatake.
Sakura gave Ino a teasing gesture, and Ino could only grit her teeth. 'arrogant banshee! this is not over!
Shikamaru sighed and tried to scooch further away from the fuming girl, having been unlucky at seat placement again. 'why sit next to me? i should have sat in the corner with Shino. That's if he'd let me.
"i don't get it. What do girls see in a guy like that? he's not so special. "he muttered to himself.
Ino sent him a look. "You are so clueless, Shikamaru, don't you get it?
he scowled. "no. i don't get it, because i'm not a girl."
she shook her head. "poor Shikamaru. so full of yourself. Jealousy is an ugly look on you. i'd hatte to be on your team.
"squad 8, is Hinata Hyuuga, Kiba Inuzuka-
"YEAH BABY! LET"S G-
"SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN KIBA!" yelled Iruka, and Akamaru cover his ears with his paws while Kiba shrunk to what felt like the size of an ant.
The class laughed, and Kiba apologized.
Iruka sighed, already looking forward to getting a drink at the bar. "Squad 8 is Hinata Hyuuga, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shino Aburame. your Jonin sensei is Kurenai Yuhi.
Hinata actually smirked at the last bit.
"Now, squad 10. Ino Yamanaka. Shikamaru Nara-
Shikamaru chuckled. "what was that about hating to be on my squad?
Ino only grit her teeth as Iruka finishes. "and Choji Akamichi. your Jonin squad leader is Asuma Sarutobi.
'NO! not the fatso! ugh! my day is ruined!
Iruka went through the last of the students and smiled when he finally listed off the last team.
"ok, you guys can go ahead for lunch. afterward, you'll meet your Jonin sensei. it was an honor being your teacher. class dismissed.

Everyone went their separate ways to either eat in the cafeteria for the last time since they wouldn't be in the academy again, for old time's sake, or where ever they, pleased.
for Sasuke, it was in a place he knew no one would disturb him, and unfortunately for Sakura, he was too fast for her to catch on time.
"where did he go? i wanted to eat lunch with him and get to know him. we'll be on the same team, so-
she stopped herself when she heard Naruto coming from behind her, and he went to say something when she beat him to the punch. "save it Naruto, i already know what you're about to ask, and the answer is no.
he frowned. "you don't even know-
"yes i do. what gave you the idea that i would want to eat with you. your annoying.
she turned on her heel and walked off to find Sasuke, and Naruto stood there, dejected. 'i'm starting to hate that girl.
he shook that thought and walked in the other direction. he was going to ask if she wanted to eat with him and Sasuke since he knows where to find him via his sensory capabilities, but that ship sailed.
he sat at a bench and scowled when he saw Shikamaru, Choji, and Ino eating on the neighboring rooftop, and his scowl turned to sad frown. even Ino has the curtesy to eat with her teammates.
'guess I'm eating alone today. he pulled out some cup ramen, a small bowl, chopsticks, and an assortment of veggies he chopped up beforehand before mixing it in.

after calling out the rest of the teams, they class was informed that they would be picked up one by their Jonin sensei. and one by one, each team was pick up. all except one. team 7.
Naruto had finished his hour nap and found that their Jonin sensei still wasn't here. and so, he paced the room, having left anything that could have entertained him at home.
Sakura was annoyed as well, but with Sasuke all to herself, she didn't mind the wait. even though )Naruto) was on her team, Sasuke was the perfect counter.
she was chatting it up with him, but all the while, the Uchiha was glaring at her. 'never in my life did i ever think someone so infatuating could exist, but here i am, stuck with this fangirl and Naruto.
he took a breath. 'patience. i just need to get through the day and all will be well. i'll be well on my way to killing (him). this is only the beginning after all.
another hour passed, and Naruto was beyond the point of waiting. he got up and went towards the door. Sakura looked and frowned. "and where do you think you're going? sensei could show up any minute now.
Naruto sighed. "i'm bored and have nothing to do. i'm going to go grab something from my place and head straight back. unless you want to make conversation?

Naruto sighed and went out the door, feeling dejected.
he was back in twenty minutes with a book. his mother's book to be exact. he wanted to find something else in here that he may be able to understand, but it wasn't easy to find. this wasn't a beginner-friendly diary.
Naruto sat on the desk as he began to read, and Sasuke had to ask. "what are you reading?
Naruto had half a mind to spite him for trying to use him as a meat shield but decided against it. he doesn't want Sakura's ire right now, not when he's trying to stay positive. his mental health isn't at 100% after all.
he let out a breath. "it's an advanced guide to fuinjutsu and lists it's most complicated forms and theories. it's a bunch of unfinished formulas.
Sakura raised a brow. "and you can read that?
Naruto looked back at the book for a moment and looked back. "some of it.
they both shrugged. losing interest, and Naruto went right back to his search.
it was after another thirty minutes that the door finally opened to reveal Kakashi.
they both straightened up as the man scanned them, his lazy eye sending a shiver through them as they awaited their Jonin sensei's judgment of them.
the man then sighed and opened the door wider. "my first impression is that... you're all boring. Meet me on the roof." [poof]

the three students made it to the rooftop where their Jonin sensei was waiting for them and sat down before him.
"Ok. Why don't you introduce yourselves, one at a time. "spoke Kakashi lazily.
Sakura blinked. "introduce ourselves? In what way?
Kakashi sighed. "things you like. the things you hate. hobbies. dream for the future. stuff like that.
Naruto crossed his arms. "why don't you start first? you're a mystery to us, after all.
"me? i'm Kakashi Hatake. things i like and things i hate... i don't feel like telling you that.
Sakura's brow twitched and Naruto frowned.
"-my dreams for the future... never really thought about it. hobbies? i have... lots of hobbies.
Sakra shook her head. 'well that was useless. all he told us was his name.
Kakashi turned to Sakura. "ok then, Sakura was it? You're up.
Sakura nodded. "my name is Sakura Haruno. i like-..." she trailed off and started giggling. "my hobbies are..." she glanced over to Sasuke and smirked, giggling again. "my future dream is..." she started gushing at her fantasy. whatever it was.
Kakashi sighed. " and the things you hate.
she scowled. "Naruto!
Kakashi shook his head, and Naruto just looked depressed at this point.
Kakashi gave the biggest eye roll in the world and turned to Naruto. "ok. you're next.
Naruto nodded. "my name is Naruto Uzumaki. my likes are Ramen, the three people in my life who've accepted me for who i am, and... problem solving. my dislikes are being judged by others. my dream for the future... is...
Kakashi raised a brow at the silence, and both Sakura and Sasuke looked at the blonde before Sasuke spoke. "to be Hokage.
Naruto glanced at him and the Uchiha shrugged. " you would preach about it non-stop.
Naruto rolled his eyes. "yeah. Sure. That.
Kakashi raised a brow but didn't question it. "Ok. Uchiha. you're next.
Sasuke sighed. "my name, is Uchiha Sasuke. I have plenty of dislikes. I don't particularly like anything. "I don't have any hobbies. I don't have a dream- it's an ambition."
Kakashi felt his heart go cold. 'Just as expected...'

Sakura gazed at him with hearts in her eyes. 'He was so cool!
Naruto stared at Sasuke long and hard for a moment before looking back to Kakashi.
Kakashi let out a sigh and a yawn. "ok. well then, now that that's out of the way, i can inform you of what we'll be doing tomorrow.
Naruto perked up at this, ready for the first step on his path to becoming chuunin. "and what is that?
Kakashi smirked under his mask. "a survival exercise.
they all looked confused and Sakura raised her hand.
Kakashi rolled his eyes. "what is it, Sakura?
"with all due respect Kakashi-sensei, but we already did all that in the academy. why are we doing more practice instead of partaking in a mission.
Kakashi unfolded his arms and planted his hands in his pocket, peering up at the clouds. "well... how do i put this... you were all lied to.
the three students looked alarmed at this, and Naruto spoke up first. "what do you mean? about what?
Kakashi shrugged." everything. you kids may wear those headbands for now, but until i deem you worthy of them, you aren't genin. this is your final test. every academy student is doing one, and the chances of them failing is about 66%. do the math and take into account that there were 42 students to begin with. a pretty big class. that's why we cull them.
Naruto stood up and grit his teeth. "really?! more of this?!
Kakashi chuckled." cool it, hothead, it's mandatory. besides. it's a greater accomplishment if you pass., especially for me, since you'd be the first batch of students to do so out of the previous 6.
Sakura's nerves were triggered, realizing that this was no joke. Sasuke looked calm, but his jittering hands told a different story, and Naruto was mostly annoyed. Kakashi took it as him being clueless to the situation, so he decided to elaborate.
"in essence. if you guys fail this test, your getting sent back to the academy. oh, and, another thing. only two of you will pass this test.
now that did it. Sasuke's glare spoke volumes, Naruto's eyes widening was an indicator, and Sakura, who already looked close to passing out from fear, nearly did for real.
Kakashi smirked. 'that's what i'm looking for. now they'll take it seriously.' "come to training ground 4 at 5 o'clock. and i wouldn't eat anything if i were you. with what you'll be doing tomorrow, you'll probably just puke. see ya." [poof]
Kakashi disappeared in a poof of smoke, and the three genin just stood there in silence.
Sasuke was the first to move, standing up from his sitting position, and leaving the roof, with Sakura close behind.
Naruto, however, stayed behind. he waited until they were gone when he lifted his pants and undid the seal on his legs, doing the same for his arms.
gravity-like seals that imitated weight. something Jiraiya forced him to where. they aren't heavy, nor are they designed to specifically increase his speed alone, but rather to strengthen his limbs overall and slow him down in the academy to properly give the impression of not being the best student.
'these almost got me killed fighting Mizuki. i didn't even think to take them off. Iruka was right. fear is a killer.
Naruto launched himself off the roof and raced straight home.

March 14th.
the next day.
Naruto walked into the clearing of the training ground at 4 in the morning.
why was he early? simple. he'd been having trouble sleeping anyway, and with the anxiety of having to pass some secret test, he decided to get himself warmed up.
He did a few laps around the training ground and did some shadowboxing. Pre-drew some seals, and waited for his teammates.
They showed up, Sakura looking groggy and Sasuke looking stoic as usual.
"morning you two."
they didn't answer as they took a seat and waited for Kakashi to show up.
they waited and waited. when the sun went up, they waited some more. so much waiting. yet no complaints.
after three hours of waiting, Kakashi finally showed up, walking with his hands in his pockets. "ah. morning kids.
Naruto didn't react, just sitting in a cross-legged position while Sasuke sat on a tree stump, and Sakura on the other, stood up and pointed an accusatory finger at Kakashi. "you're late!
Kakashi shrugged. "a black cat crossed my path. had to take the long way around.
Naruto glared. "what? a lap around the village?
Kakashi shrugged and planted a timer on the boulder and turned it on. "there. set for noon. now. let's begin by explaining the rules.
Kakashi held up a set of bells. "you two are to retrieve these bells from my person in whatever fashion you deem best, or... fail and get sent back to the academy.
The two stared in surprise. Naruto stared in disbelief. Sakura in fear. Sasuke, as coldly as he could, but still held a tinge of surprise in his eyes.
"shuriken, kunai, well, you can use just about anything you want.
Sakura shook her head. "but sensei, those are too dangerous to use. you could get killed.
Kakashi shrugged. "it's up to you if you wanna use them. but understand that i am a Jonin. a league well beyond anything you'll face on the field. for the most part anyway.
Sasuke stood up from his seated position and Naruto did the same. they were both ready for anything.
Kakashi chuckled. "ok then. When i say go say go, you go. ok?
they got into a ready stance and waited for the inevitable.
Kakashi gave an eye smile after a minute staredown. "go.
They scattered, racing into the trees to conceal themselves.
Kakashi closed his eye and took a breath. he scanned the trees for any obvious sign of them and was happy to note that they were all well hidden.
'good. stealth isn't lost on them. Sakura is hidden well, Sasuke is almost undetectable, and Naruto...;
Kakashi's eye opened when seeing Naruto standing before him, a smirk on his face. 'i should have known better.
Kakashi sighed. "what are you doing? Don't you know the first rule about being a ninja?
Naruto crossed his arms and stared.
Kakashi just sighed.
in the bushes, Sakura was facepalming, and Sasuke was simply confused. 'I swear I saw Naruto dash off with us. What gives?
Sasuke stared closer, and realized that what he had to be looking at was a clone. 'interesting. what are you up to Naruto.
Sakura was not on the same page as Sasuke. she couldn't understand why Naruto thought that facing a Jonin was a good idea. 'i swear that idiot is gonna get himself sent back to the academy."
Kakashi sighed. "ok then. let's begin then.
The man slowly reached into his pouch, and the genin all watched intently.
'kunai? Shuriken? paperbomb?! What is it?!' thought Sasuke.
Kakashi whipped it out, and it was a book.
Sasuke and Sakura were flabbergasted in the bush/tree they sat in, but Naruto seemed interested.
"I-is that... Makeout paradise volume.1?" asked Naruto in surprise.
Kakashi's eye went wide. "what th- how do you know that? Don't tell me you're a fan. You shouldn't be reading this kind of material.
Naruto laughed. "no. i'm not a fan. i just... nevermind." 'this guy is a Jonin. he's worse than Mizuki tenfold. i don't have a chance in hell at beating this guy without using everything in my arsenal. the best thing i can do is ensure the real me has an idea of what he's capable of.
Naruto got into a stance, and Kakashi chuckled. "traditional techniques won't work on me kid. i'm telling you this-
Naruto slammed his hand on the ground, and a massive scroll appeared before him. he proceeded to unravel the scroll, and what seemed like an endless amount of kunai and shuriken came flying out, racing towards Kakashi.
The Cyclops wasn't surprised in the sense that it had a chance of hitting him, but in the fact that it was even there, hidden under his nose.
He jumped back, blurring out of the way of the onslaught, and drew a kunai to deflect whatever made it's way to him.
Then he saw it. on one of the kunai was a red tag he knew all too well.
'interesting.' thought the man before an explosion rang out in the area.
Sasuke and Sakura were shocked at what they saw. 'all those kunai and shuriken! he summoned them using a storage scroll! he came prepared! and to plant a paper bomb in the midst of it was genius!
The explosion wasn't that large, but it was enough to force Kakashi to put his book away.
"you prepped for this, hm? What else for you have up your sleave, Uzumaki?
Kakashi was where Naruto wanted him: by the river. The scroll attack was a one-off, but it conserved chakra.
he made a hand sign, and a bunch of seals made themselves known.
Kakashi was shocked at first, and thought it was a minefield. it wasn't. it was the fire-sealing method. he recognizes the ink pattern. it's Jiraiya's technique, used to seal various fire based ninjutsu of any variant. hwever, it's pattern is wildly different, so it must be an altered version. and there's no scroll.
and indeed it was. a poof of smoke covered the battlefield, and the Naruto clone smirked as he saw hir fellow brethren clones came into existence, surrounding Kakashi.
'What is this?! I can't afford to read my book now! This wasn't on the report!
At this point, Sasuke's thoughts ran wild. How many clones is that?! 40? 50? 70?
Kakashi sighed and put his book away. "it seems you may prove to be more shinobi material than what was assumed, but this won't help you pass this exercise.
Kakashi whirled around and sliced through a dozen clones in a single move, well before any of them could react, and the primary clone gritted his teeth, watching the slaughter.
Kakashi was a whirlwind of destruction, and in under a minute, though the clones moved well and fast, they weren't a challenge.
Now it was just Kakashi and Naruto all over again.
"care to try again?" asked Kakashi.
Sakura was in complete shock. 'since when did Naruto get so good?! he's putting up a front! this is crazy! and Kakashi is a monster! how am i going to keep up with any of these people?!
Kakashi strolled up to Naruto and stopped, noticing he hadn't moved an inch.
"you really have come prepared. though, i won't disperse you. you are chasing me, not the other way round. so, if you don't mind me asking, who taught you this stuff anyway? this is beyond the capabilities of a genin.
Naruto smirked and crossed his arms. "I'm self-taught.
"liar. Though, it doesn't matter.
Kakashi brought out his book again, but to his annoyance, it was charred.
there was silence on the battlefield before Kakashi sighed. "well, there goes my entertainment.
Naruto sighed before rushing Kakashi at a speed he wasn't aware Naruto could reach and sent a charging kick at the Jonin, to which it was blocked.
The clone sent a follow-up, a flurry of punches, which Kakashi was forced to swat away.
'strong and fast.' thought Kakashi as he sent a sweep, to which the clone flipped over, twisting midair to send a heel kick.
Kakashi caught it, but before he could capitalize, the clone twisted again and sent another fist, to which Kakashi held his hand out to catch. but the clone changed the attack from a punch to a grab, and held Kakashi's hand tightly.
Kakashi raised a brow at this, but when the clone's jacket began to glow, he knew he was in trouble. again.
"let's see how you get out of this!" yelled Naruto before he blew up in an explosion twice the size of the first one,strong enough for Sakura to really feel the force of it from the bush she was in.
Sakura's eyes were wide in shock and horror, with no knowledge that the Naruto he was watching was a clone; she thought he went and blew himself up.
'oh my god! What was he thinking? This wasn't worth his life!
Sasuke, on the other hand, was well aware of him being a clone. What Sasuke was doing was analyzing everything he learned from the two combatants. 1. Naruto's battle IQ is surprisingly high. he has access to what appears to be sealing arts, something he should have paid attention to when he mentioned the book he was reading in class. 3. Kakashi is seemingly invincible, being too skilled to be tripped up even by Naruto's prepared assault. 4. Naruto has taijutsu, speed, and strength that he never showed in the academy, and lastly, 5. Kakashi is too strong.
why does he assume Kakashi is too strong? simple. he's staring at an only slightly inconvenienced Kakashi right now.
'how much have you been hiding, Uzumaki?' thought Sasuke bitterly.
Meanwhile.
Naruto, who was sat up further away, scowled when receiving the memories of his clone. "you've got to be shitting me. i burnt his book and nothing more." the boy ground out through gritted teeth.
he took a breath to calm down, and closed his, using the minds eye of Kagura to keep tabs on Kakashi at all times. "i don't want to waste any energy until the time is right. for now, i'll let my teammates try there hand.

"45 minutes left, and the other two still haven't made a move", mused Kakashi as he strolled towards where he knew Sasuke might be.
"Usually, students of any kind would've attacked me by now. I wonder what they're doing?"
Just as Kakashi mused this to himself, multiple Shuriken whizzed towards him at high speed, causing him to dash out of the way, moving in a zigzag motion as the attacks came from different locations at different intervals. but just when he thought he was out of the woods, the Kunais of the last barrage blew up in a poof of smoke.
Kakashi's eyebrow rose at this. " Smokescreen? This must be; he whirled to deflect Shuriken coming from his blind spot before jumping out of the smoke to see where the attack came from. But when he made it to the surface, Shuriken pelted him, killing him immediately.
In the distance, Sasuke couldn't help but gape in shock. "I... I did it?
I don't know, did you? A voice rang behind him.
Sasuke was fast, whipping out shuriken in quick succession and throwing them at the source of the voice while dodging away simultaneously.
Kakashi deflected every shuriken with little regard or effort as he strolled toward the last Uchiha.
"that was impressive. You took some notes from your classmate with the little time given. The traps were right where they needed to be, and you predicted where i would dodge. That is some killer instinct.
Sasuke smirked." nice to see you coming to acknowledge my skill.
" don't get ahead of yourself, runt. Until you've unlocked your Sharingan, you aren't anything compared to me. i was being nice because i'm bored and have nothing to do. Spoke Kakashi in a bored tone. 'thanks for that, Naruto.' thought the cyclops bitterly.
Sasuke glared at the mention of his lack of Sharingan but let it go." he's just trying to get me riled up. I need to Focus; the bells are right there.
"Don't be shy now; you've kept me waiting long enough. Show me what the Prodigious Rookie of the Year can do, spoke Kakashi.
Sasuke's hands flashed faster than Kakashi was expecting as Kunai hurled toward him with impressive accuracy. Kakashi dodged to the side, yet as he did, Sasuke threw shuriken towards a hidden rope in the bush that seemed to set off a kunai trap, hurling more projectiles towards him. he responded by once again moving out of the way, but this time with a little more haste, blurring out of the way, but it seems he underestimated Sasuke's Battle IQ.
The boy was already upon him, having appeared behind him faster than a genin should have been able to.
Kakashi spun around and caught Sasuke's kick, which led to a punch, which he caught as well. before Kakashi could think about what to do with the boy he was gripping, Sasuke spun himself and brought his other leg down towards Kakashi's head, forcing Kakashi to release his fist to block the blow, but it seemed this was what Sasuke wanted, the smirk on the boys face giving it away.
Sasuke outstretched his arm as Kakashi absorbed the impact of Sasuke's kick and reached for the bell, causing Kakashi to jerk away in panic. The boy just barely touched the Bell before Kakashi flashed away at a speed that caught Sasuke off guard and caused him to land on his hands and flip back onto his feet, Kakashi on the other side regarding him with a bit of confusion.
Sasuke chuckled." surprised?
"a little. I am impressed. But the bells are still on my waist and out of your reach. Care to rectify that before boasting?
Sasuke grinned with pleasure.
Sasuke went through a series of hand signs that left Kakashi Alarmed immediately. "Fire sign?! he shouldn't know that. elemental transformation should be too advanced!, Kakashi thought in shock.
"Fire style: Fireball Jutsu! he yelled and blew Flames at Kakashi, who seemed too stunned to move on time.
The flames engulfed Kakashi and caused the man to seemingly melt before Sasuke.
Sasuke smirked at his handiwork, but when the flames dispersed, and there was no Kakashi anywhere, he panicked.
'what?! where?! WHERE?!
he took a breath after a moment. 'calm Sasuke. Think. he's not flanking me... he's not above me... then-!
Sasuke was pulled down into the dirt suddenly, sinking as a hand dragged him from beneath.
a moment later, Kakashi walked out of the ground as though they were stairs and chuckled. "ninja art. hadhunter jutsu. one of my favorites.
Sasuke scowled, and began struggling, and Kakashi only sighed. "you'll be there awhile, so get comfortable.
Kakashi walked away, and Sasuke cursed. "damn! Under me?! why couldn't i see that?! why?!
The boy grits his teeth and tries to get out, but it is all for naught. he was in there pretty good.
He sighed. 'i didn't even come close. damn it.'
he perked up when he heard someone land close by, and to his surprise, it was Sakura.
"Sasuke! Are you ok? she asked in concern, to which Sasuke looked at her funny.
"can you just dig me out already? we're running out of time." he said in an annoyed tone.
she nodded. "right!
She got to work immediately digging Sasuke out.
Sasuke just sat in the earth hole and frowned. "Kakashi can't be beat. there has to be a purpose to all of this. Naruto did the most damage, and i came the closest.
he grit his teeth to what he knew would come next. 'must be the test. i just don't understand why there are three of us though. but if i can convince Naruto to work with me, we'll surely stand a chance and pass. he's proved more useful than i could imagine.
Sakura was finally able to get his arm out, but frowned when she felt a sudden breeze before turning around to see Kakashi standing before her.
"What's this? Another genin? and I only just buried your partner, not but some minutes ago. Oh. you are a ballsy little genin, aren't you." he mused, his eye crinkling with amusement.
Sakura stood her ground with a kunai in hand and prepared an assault that she wasn't sure would work, yet she was surprised to see Kakashi appear behind her faster than she could comprehend and had Sasuke by the neck.
"well. let me remind you of the type of situation you find yourself in.
He snapped Sasuke's neck in an instant and Sakura's heart stopped, and she screamed in horror.
However, what she didn't realize was that she was actually in a genjutsu, and to everyone else, she just started screaming.
Kakashi sighed as he watched the girl fall on her back and have what he assumed to be a meltdown. "she's having a panic attack," he said out loud. "that's a D-ran genjutsu. i figured she'd break it herself, but apparently not.
Sasuke dug himself out and threw shurikens at Kakashi while jumping away.
The Shuriken all missed Kakashi as he moved his head just out of the way, and deflected whatever he didn't feel like dodging.
Sasuke knelt down and picked Sakura up before rushing off into the woods.
Kakashi sighed at that. "i don't feel like chasing. I have a clone in the area, anyway. besides. i need to find the real Naruto. for a genin, he's hard to find.

Sasuke landed in a separate clearing and set Sakura down, tapping her face to wake her. "Sakura! c'mon!" hw whispered harshely.
When he felt someone's presence behind him and assumed it to be Kakashi, he whirled on them and swung his kunai, only to be disarmed when Naruto grabbed his wrist and twisted it, jumping back for space afterward.
Sasuke stared at Naruto in shock, and Naruto stared at the kunai. "sorry for scaring you. what brings you over here? i figured you'd be finishing your fight with Kakashi.
Sasuke glared at first, but then his eyes narrowed. "you saw.
Naruto nodded. "i did. you touched a bell. a feat i couldn't accomplish, though i was using a clone.
Sasuke crossed his arms and sighed. he rationalized this as a case where Naruto simply hid his intellect and nothing more. "listen. Neither of us can get a bell without the other. i'm sure you know this already.
Naruto nodded. "i was gonna dig you out, but Kakashi was too close.
Sasuke nodded in understanding while holding his wrist.
That display from earlier was shocking to say the least. His strength was felt through that grab.
"you have a lot of explaining to do when we pass this thing.
Naruto didn't say anything to that and walked up to the unconscious form of Sakura. "well, i have a plan. i'll need Sakura and you to-
"no Sakura." spoke Sasuke stoically.
Naruto turned to Sasuke in surprise. "Sasuke, she's on our team. we need her.
Sasuke bristled at that. "no we don't. she's the weakest here and holds us back.
the blonde stood up and scowled. "then i'm not getting involved. i'll just-
"What? team up with her? be realistic! she won't team up with you even if her life depended on it. she'd come straight to me and drag me down with her! leave her now or we won't make it!
Naruto gritted his teeth. "absolutely not! we do this as one or as none!
Sasuke laughed at that. "oh my god, Uzumaki! For that intelligence of yours, you are so predictable! Are you still simping for her? She said it herself! She hates you!
Naruto grabbed Sasuke by his shirt, and Sasuke did the same with Naruto.
They glared into one another's eyes, but Naruto relented, much to Sasuke's surprise, and Naruto let go. "you're right. she hates me. and... treats me like shit... but this has nothing to do with my former crush on her. i think there's more to this test than meets the eye.
Sasuke let Naruto go and crossed his arms. "only two can pass. if we involve her and it comes down to a vote, we abandon her. Understood?
Naruto scowled. "do what you will, Sasuke.
The raven head scoffed and walked up to Sakura.
he put a hand on her head, and another hand formed a sign. 'Kai!
Sakura's eyes went wide, and she shot up.
The first thing she saw was Sasuke, and she embraced him much to his supreme annoyance. "okay! okay! get off and listen!
Sakura nodded and pulled away.
"listen," said Sasuke. " me and Naruto are going to gun it for the bells together in a do or die attempt, but we need... your assistance. in whatever way you can, just do your best.
Sakura's face lit up with determination, but her nerves were shot.
Naruto sighed and pointed the way. "he's back to where we started. there isn't much time left.
Sasuke looked at Naruto strangely. "how do you know that?
Naruto gave a slight smirk. "I'm a sensor.
His two teammates blinked at this notion.
"why are we just now finding this out now? " asked Sakura, but Sasuke cut in. "questions later. if this is true, then lead the way.
None of them knew of the Kakashi clone watching them from the shadows. 'it seems Uzumaki has a sensory ability. it could use some work though.'

Kakashi laid sat and read a book. not the book he wanted, but it was a little entertaining.
actually it wasn't. it's the sensei handbook gifted to him by Kurenai. since he has nothing else to do at the moment, why not read?
' I can't believe i'm reading this. this is useless and outdated information.' thought Kakashi sourly.
He looked at the timer and saw they only had 10 minutes left.
"Well. it seems they won't be passing. what a shame. two of them had some talent, and they were interesting, to say the least. oh well. t
Kakashi was about to stand up, but then, shuriken were hurled towards him. a lot of shuriken.
Kakashi sighed and put his book away to deflect the onslaught, and while he did so, a bunch of Naruto clones came out of the woodwork.
"oh? so it's Naruto's turn. the real one i bet. let's see how well you do.
Kakashi allowed the clones to rush him, effortlessly kicking and elbowing them out of existence.
What he didn't notice was a clone on either side of him weaving signs.
"fire style: fireball jutsu!" yelled one clone. "wide style: wind cyclone!" yelled the other.
Kakashi's eyes widened at the sight. "the hell?!
The fire-breathing clone's appearance changed with a poof to reveal that it was Sasuke, the boy who was actually as shocked as Kakashi, but for a different reason.
the wind-like tornado engulfed Kakashi first, and the flames that came after turned it into a raging vortex of flame.
Naruto had his hands clasped as he held the jutsu together with wind style, and Sasuke landed next to him. "you can perform wind style?!"
Naruto didn't respond, too focused on the jutsu when his eyes widened. "beneath us!
Sasuke didn't need to be told twice, and both boys dashed away just in time for two sets of hands to miss their ankles.
they slid back, and Kakashi climbed out of the dirt as the flaming tornado disappeared behind him. "well, well, well. this was not what i was expecting. now, that was some impressive teamwork,
Kakashi was glancing arounf for Sakura but couldn't see her. something that bothered him a great deal. but there's still time.
Kakashi's focus was brought back to the present when Naruto dashed at him and sent a flurry of strikes, and Kakashi deflected and blocked all that came his way.
Sasuke jumped into the exchange, flipping over them to land a back kick towards Kakashi's head, to which Kakashi slapped away Naruto's palm strikes with one hand while catching the attack from Sasuke with the other and proceeded to throw Sasuke into Naruto.
Naruto caught Sasuke, but the weight sent them tumbling away regardless, Sasuke throwing shuriken at the Jonin mid tumble.
Kakashi swattem them away easily, but was shocked when he felt the bells suddenly nicked from his side, and not from the boy, but from behind.
Kakashi turned to see Sakura had thrown a shuriken when he least expected, and while the bells bells fell, Naruto puffed his chest out, and blew them with a basic wind pulse the sent them straight to Sakura who scrambled to pick them up.
Kakashi had half a mind to prevent this, but it would defeat the purpose of the test.
Sakura yipped for joy and showed off the bells, and Kakashi sighed. "well look at that. you got me. good job. Sasuke stood up, shocked that it turned out this way.
'what are the odds? they used her and it turned out that way.
Naruto was smiling from ear to ear while Sasuke sighed. he really wasn't planning to include Sakura. but it seems to have won them the test.
"Well. Now that you have the bells, who will receive the second one?
Sakura looked surprised and remembered that she had both and not one.
She was about to immediately say Sasuke, but remembering how integral Naruto was, and that she didn't do any of the heavy lifting, it made her hesitate.
'do i give it to both of them? no! i'd be without Sasuke! ugh, why is this so hard?
she closed her eyes for a moment, looking between the two, and went to say Sasuke when Naruto spoke.
"give it to Sasuke, Sakura," said Naruto.
Sasuke's eyes widened, and Sakura looked guilty.
"Are you sure you want to do that, Naruto?" asked Kakashi.
Naruto sighed. "there's always next year. besides. it won't be that weird taking the year again since i turn 13 in October anyway.
Kakashi leaned forward. "even though you did the heavy lifting?
Naruto looked away but nodded.
Kakashi sighed. "well, it looks like Naruto here understands the premise of the test."
Sasuke's eyes widened, and Sakura tilted her head in confusion. "huh? What do you mean? The test was to get the bells, right?
Kakashi shook his head. "no. it was to work as a team. Sasuke. you wanted to abandon Sakura and team up with Naruto alone, to which Naruto refused. Sakura. you were going to hand the bells over to Sasuke for obvious reasons, even though you knew it was wrong to leave Naruto behind.
Both Sasuke scowled and Sakura looked hurt at the revelation of Sasuke's plan.
"what you kids don't seem to understand is that what you are getting yourselves into isn't a game. it's life or death. Sakura. you giving up Naruto as you did is like... you know what? let me show you.
Kakashi blurred into action. and Sasuke gasped out, and yelled in pain as he was suddenly on the ground.
Sakura and Naruto turned around in surprise, and Kakashi gripped Sasuke's hair up and planted a kunai to his throat. "ok now. Sakura! kill Naruto or Sasuke dies!
Sakura gasped in horror, and Naruto scowled. he had an idea of what Kakashi is doing. it makes sense.
Sakura was horrified, but Kakashi released Sasuke and spun his kunai. "see how dark that got? An enemy takes a hostage, and suddenly, there's a choice to make. In the end, someone usually ends up dead. on every mission your life is on the line. between the three of you, only Naruto knows this.
Sasuke glanced at Naruto, and Sakura let out a shaky breath.
Kakashi sighed and ushered them to follow him.
They did, and while following behind the man, Naruto had to ask.
"Kakashi. how did you know? i didn't sense you when me and Sasuke were talking.
"your sensory capabilities are impressive, but one's chakra and presence can be suppressed. i simply had a clone keep an eye on you two while i was relaxing. i got sick of the traps and wanted to get ahead of them. they were getting kinda dangerous.
Naruto frowned. 'so i need to work on the potency of my sensor abilities. that's just embarrassing.
Kakashi and the team stopped at a monument.
"You see this stone with names engraved on it?
the genin nodded and Kakashi continued. "they are all ninjas who are all honored as heroes a to this village for fighting and dying on the field of battle. all of them fought to protect what they cherished. my closest friends are engraved onto these stones.
the three genin looked down at that, and Kakashi let out a tired sigh, taking a seat at the foot of the monument.
"alright. i've test you, and technically you passed. but barely. Naruto, good work on discovering the meaning of the test.
Sasuke reluctantly agreed with Kakashi on that one. but that left too many questions that needed to be answered.
Sakura stared at Naruto in a new light, and Naruto said nothing. he just stared at the monument, his mind on the Mizuki incident. he couldn't help but think that if he died then, would his name be engraved? hell, if he died two years from now as a full-fledged chuunin, would anyone besides Iruka, Jiraiya, and Hiruzen mourn for him? he doubted. he didn't even think he'd make it onto that monument. it's for heroes. not for monsters in human skin.
"ok. we'll talk more tomorrow. i'm sure you're all hungry and would like something to eat. so here." Kakashi said as he revealed their lunch boxes.
"chow down. you earned it.
Sakura was cheered up at that, and Sasuke silently took his.
Naruto grabbed his and stared at the contents inside. rice balls and dumplings with some seaweed snacks. not a bad lunch.
Kakashi watched Naruto closely. 'Lord Hokage warned me he might have been effected by the Mizuki incident. but if the reports regarding his personality is anything to go by, i'd say. he's suffering from a mild form of PTSD. we'll have to fix that. i don't want the team dynamic to become anymore rocky than it already is. especially when he compliments everyone here. Including me.

after their lunch, Sasuke and Sakura were informed of the Mizuki incident with Naruto's permission, and after some time of team bonding, they were dismissed, while Naruto was asked to stay.
as Sasuke and Sakura left, Sakura looked back at Naruto with an unreadable look on her face.
she had no idea how she felt about the boy now. She was still in a bit of disbelief about what she'd witnessed from the blonde today, and with there being much more they didn't know about him, he was suddenly a mystery to them.
Naruto sat before Kakashi, an unreadable expression on his face.
"you were impressive today. I wasn't expecting you to booby-trap the training ground before my arrival. what made you think it was a god idea though? by all means, the test could have been of a different nature.
Naruto was silent for a moment before answering. "it was just a gut feeling.
Kakashi raised a brow. "that's it? a gut feeling made you invest resources and chakra into those... what were those?
"i call it the inverted enclosing technique. A fuinjutsu that allows me to store certain ninjutsu within and unseal it remotely from a distance.
Kakashi nodded, intrigued. "you have an advanced technique there. had those clones been, say, elemental-based and detonated? i'd be screwed. but that's beside the point. you did all that while unsure of the nature of the test.
Naruto shook his head. "i knew we'd have to fight you. i wasn't sure in what manner.
Kakashi nodded. "how are doing personally though?
Naruto gave him a strange look, and saw Kakashi meant it. " i feel fine.
Kakashi gave him a stare. "you re a very bad liar. you aren't fine. look. i want you to go see a therapist. i know that the incident with Mizuki got to you, and you watched someone die. i need you mentally prepared for what's to come. understand? no freezing up.
Naruto sighed. "i didn't freeze up with you.
Kakashi shrugged. "i wasn't trying to kill you. that's different.
He got up and patted Naruto's shoulder. "I want to see your full capability during our next exercise. Show me everything that you are capable of, and I mean everything. understood? no secrets. not this early into your career.
Naruto nodded, and Kakashi left.
Naruto then flopped onto his back and sighed, relieved that he passed the test.

Naruto dragged his feet home, exhausted after the long afternoon.
it was only three, yet it felt like it was nine.
he wasn't far from the complex when he perked up suddenly, feeling a familiar chakra signature.
he ran into the lobby, up the stairs, and straight down the hall, swinging his door open. and there he was. Jiraiya.
"ah, Naruto. i uhh. i wanted to apologize for not ma-oof!"
the man was assaulted in a bear hug, Naruto pulling him into a tight embrace. "it's good to see you.
Jiraiya smirked and rubbed the boy's hair. "same to you, kiddo.
Naruto released the hug and motioned for Jiraiya to sit. Something he does when he needs to alk about something important.
Jiraiya noticed this, and Naruto's tone changed, and he sat down with a serious look on his face.
"Alright, I'm ready to hear it," spoke Jiraiya as he folded his hands.
Naruto pulled out a stool and sat in front of him. "do you still love Tsunade?
Jiraiya blinked at that, confused as to what that had to do with anything, but figured he would humor Naruto.
"Of course I do. I've known her for a long time, though she's in a strange state. Why?
Naruto sighed and decided it was now or never. He explained his crush on Sakura in great detail, and the man listened, realizing why Naruto was asking for advice. From the first day they met to this day, he told him everything. and Jiraiya listened. It brought him back to his days with Tsunade and Orochimaru—wonderful and painful memories.
by the end, there was a long pause, and Naruto spoke to break the silence. "so... what should i do?
Jiraiya ran his hand through his hair and shook his head, chuckling. "i can see that you are a lot like me in this sense. Falling for someone out of reach, and loving them to death. literally.
Naruto nodded. "you think i should try harder? or just ease up a little?
Jiriya shook his head. "Naruto. Listen to me. When i was your age, i chased after Tsunade for the same reasons. i was a total simp for her."
the older man shook his head and chuckled painfully, yet there was genuine laughter in it as well. "i watched her fall in love with others repeatedly, and was the shoulder to cry on when things didn't pan out, from when she was a littl genin, thrugh our chuunin days, and into the days where we were Jonin. i never stopped loving her. never stopped chasing her, because i believed with all my heart that one day she would return my affections.
Naruto didn't like where this was going, and Jiriya continued, " I sacrificed a lot for her—sometimes my training, sometimes opportunities, and most of all, I was blinded. so much so that I never took notice of others who felt the same way about me as I did her. It wasn't until I saw your mother and father's relationship that I realized that what I had wasn't healthy. It was destructive.
Naruto buried his hands in his face and sighed. "so give up.
Jiraiya placed a hand on his shoulder. "no. i'm, not trying to tell you that it's hopeless. i'm telling you, that you are destroying yourself by putting her first when you have so much to worry about right now. excuse my expression, but you degrade yourself for this girl when she doesn't see you as anything aside from a confidence booster. based on what i hear anyway.
"i don't know this girl, so i won't bad mouth her, nor will i tell you to stop chasing what you feel. i'm telling you that i don't want you to end up like me. my options are through. my life... well, i wouldn't say it's over, far from it. but i realized this way too late. you have so much ahead of you, and hearing this... i fear you'll end up like me.
Naruto frowned. "there's nothing wrong with you, Jiraiya.
Jiraiya shrugged." maybe... maybe not. But I do know one thing.
Naruto tilted his head as Jiraiya finishded. "you are more than what you think you are. you always have been. tell me. does the this girl make you happy? or does the prospect of being with her?
Naruto sighed and leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. "i understand.
Jiraiya nodded. "i'm just giving my advice. as a fifty-year old man going into his Twighlight in only a decade, dodge this bullet before it hits you.

{Author's Note}
So i forgot to ever mention the weighted seals on Naruto's limbs in the previous chapter, and i apologize. i hate adding things out of nowhere and it wasn't my intention. i've always felt that a character's power should be earned, shown, or explained before it's truly displayed. i'll edit the previous chapter as to prevent newer readers from being confused. i'm new to this sort of thing and hate those types of slip-ups. i like the thought of the viewer being well aware of just how capable the character is in the beginning o that they can see him grow. i hope this doesn't bother anyone. Again, i apologize.
this was my longest chapter yet. let me know if you think i should split them up. this was technically two chapters in one. same for the previous two. you won't have to wait as long, but they'll be shorter. till more than 5k though. hopefully.
i want to make sure you guys know what Naruto is capable of at this part of the story because this is the very beginning, the prologue. so i want to ask. should i create a proper bio for him so you guys can see? or a list of ninjutsu and abilities at his disposal? it could help in ensuring that there is no asspull nonsense out of nowhere, and it gives the viewer a proper grasp of the character's power.
Naruto will in fact get over Sakura. That was always the plan. he needs to be a clean slate for me to work with him.
i wanted this transition to be exactly that. A transition. Naruto getting over his childhood crush early would have been difficult for me to excuse without the viewer seeing as to why. now you guys know why. it's actually the reason i like having Jiraiya in his life. he's there to ensure Naruto develops into something more than both himself and his father. that, and i hated how he died in the series. it broke me.
Naruto was a bit gloomy in this chapter, but he won't stay like that, i promise. he'll recover by the next one. he's a trooper. i wanted him to come out the other side a slightly different and mature character. he wasn't getting proper sleep due to nightmares as well, hence his napping in class again.
it was also why he was next to Sasuke.
The fuinjutsu Naruto used was based on a combination of the Fire sealing method, the sealing jutsu Jiraiya used to seal the Amaterasu flames when Naruto first encounters Itachi, and the enclosing jutsu that seals existing elements to conserve chakra. The difference is that he doesn't require a scroll to use this ability. it's called the enclosing seal.
the scroll Naruto used was no different than the one Tenten used in the chuunin exams. just bigger an impractical for travel. he threw a bunch of weapons in there and called it a day.
