Chapter 2: Mrs. Dodds Reveals Herself
When we got off the bus, Mr. Brunner gathered us and led us inside the museum.
We went past paintings, glass cases, vases, and many others. We stopped by a stele and Mr. Brunner was talking about how it was a grave marker
The stele itself was a 13-feet tall piece of carved stone with a Greek sphinx carved on top. I was trying really hard to listen to Mr. Brunner because what he was saying was kinda interesting, however Nancy kept snickering at every little thing.
I was fed up so I told her, "Will you shut up?" It came out louder than I intended.
Mr. Brunner immediately stopped his teaching to look at me. "What was that Ms. Jackson?" He asked.
I felt my face heating up. "Nothing sir." I mumbled.
"Perhaps you could tell us what that represents?" He pointed to a painting near the stele.
I followed where his fingers were pointed and thankfully I knew what it was.
"That's Kronos eating his kids right?"
"Excellent! Could you tell us why he did this?" Mr. Brunner asked.
This went on for a little while of Mr. Brunner asked me about the painting and I answered to the best of my abilities. I felt like I was doing good. All year Mr. Brunner pushed me so hard and I could show him I was paying attention to his lessons. Finally, Nancy couldn't take it.
"Like we're gonna need this in the future. Like it's gonna ask in our job interview, 'Please explain why Kronos ate his kids?'" Nancy whispered. Apparently she didn't whisper quiet enough because Mr. Brunner heard it.
"Excellent question Miss Bobofit. To paraphrase, why does this matter in your life Persephone Jackson?" I swear he had radar ears.
I racked my brain to think of an answer. My first thought was so I could be able to kill monsters better. That was one of the main reasons I paid attention to his classes. But I couldn't say that, I would be laughed at.
"I don't know Sir." I responded.
"Well, 1 point Miss Jackson for answering most of my questions. Mrs. Dodds, would you please lead them out for lunch?"
We followed Mrs. Dodds outside. Suddenly, Mr. Brunner called my name.
Grover looked at me as if asking if I'd be all right. I told him that I'll catch up.
I went back to Mr. Brunner and saw him staring at the stele with those eyes that seemed to have seen everything. His eyes held what looked like sadness as if he knew who this stele represented.
"You called for me Sir?" I asked, pulling him back to reality.
"Ah yes. Miss Jackson, you must learn the answer to my question. It is vitally important to your life."
"About the titans?"
"No, about how this applies to real life. It may be a matter of life and death." 'More than you might know' I thought.
"I will only accept the best from you Miss Jackson."
"Yes sir." He always told me this. See what I mean by pushing me too hard? So I had an automatic response.
He seemed to think about my answer for a moment. He finally nodded and told me to rejoin the group.
Grover and I sat near the fountain, as far from the group as possible, so we wouldn't be grouped with those weird kids. Grover broke the peaceful silence. "You got detention for disruption or something?" He asked.
"No, not from Mr. Brunner. You know how he is." I responded.
We were minding our own business, eating or food. When Nancy came up to us. She dumped her lunch on Grover's lap.
"Oops." She taunted.
That made me snap. I didn't even know what happened, but one moment I was sitting with Grover. Then, I was in front of Nancy and she was in the fountain.
"Percy pushed me! The baby pushed me!" She screamed.
Mrs. Dodds suddenly materialized behind me. She had a smirk that said she was just waiting for something like this to happen.
After she made sure poor Nancy was ok and promised to buy her new clothes, she told me to follow her.
Suddenly, "Wait!" Grover shouted. "I did it! I pushed her."
I was shocked. Grover was terrified of Mrs. Dodds.
"I don't think so Mr. Underwood." Mrs. Dodds growled.
"But…" Grover tried to argue.
"You. Will. Stay. Here." She interrupted.
"It's fine Grover. I'll be fine." I reassured him.
I turned to give Nancy my I-will-kill-you-later glare, then turned to follow the chaperone. I saw that she was already at the stairs. 'How did she get there so fast?'
As I was walking to Mrs. Dodds, I heard others whispering.
"Did you see..."
"the ground..."
"it tripped her..."
Once I got to her, she led me through the halls of the museum. Ah, I'll buy Nancy new clothes. Guess that's goodbye to the last of my money. But we just passed the shop. Huh? Guess that wasn't the plan.
We stopped in the Greek-Roman area. Mrs. Dodds turned around and growled. Like she growled, it sounded… monstrous.
"Did you really think we wouldn't find out about you, 'Princess'?"
Guess she's a monster. But last time I checked, I wasn't a princess.
I decided to play it safe. "I don't know what you're talking about Ma'am." I responded.
"Don't act dumb. You know what you did. Now return what you took."
"I really don-" I was interrupted by her shrieking.
"Time's up!" She transformed into a demonic figure. Bat-like, leathery wings. Razor sharp claws. Yellow fangs. A face that somehow got even uglier.
She flew to the sky and dive-bombed me. I rolled to the side.
'How am I supposed to beat this creature?' I frantically looked around for any weapon that I could use.
What I saw was Mr. Brunner at the entrance of the room.
"What ho, Percy!" He shouted. He threw me a pen.
I had no better idea so I snagged the pen midair. I looked and I wasn't holding a pen anymore.
In my hand was Mr. Brunner's sword that he used during tournament day. On closer inspection, it was made of a material that seemed like bronze.
'Celestial Bronze.' I realized. I met a demigod who had a sword made of the material. I travelled with him for a while. Unfortunately, he lost it during an incident with acid.
Because of that, I knew this was one of the few things that could harm monsters.
I refocused on the fight. I ducked when she lunged.
I spun around and as Mrs. Dodds reared back to strike again, I readied myself. She came at me, and I struck.
In a flash, the monster popped like a balloon filled with golden glitter. I looked around to see I was alone in the room with a steadily diminishing demonic presence to it and a faint sulfur-like smell.
AN: What do you think? I partially answered some questions from the previous chapter. But what does Mrs. Dodds mean by 'Princess'? Give answers, raise more questions. And who is this demigod with a sword? Thanks for reading and please review, I need feedback.
