Leviticus 26:30
I will destroy your pagan shrines and knock down your places of worship. I will leave your lifeless corpses piled on top of your lifeless idols, and I will despise you.
DogDay's hold was tight around Angel's shoulders. Despite being told by Angel that she had already killed Miss Delight, the school still made him tense. The last time he was in the school, it was full of children who were eager to learn something new. Now it was a disheveled, decaying mess. Angel was on alert during their journey. She still hadn't really said where they were going, but he trusted her. Once they made it to the back of the school, Angel stopped in her tracks.
"Angel, why did you stop?" DogDay asked, tensing up even more.
Angel didn't answer. Instead, she shifted her hold on DogDay, and, with her right hand, grabbed the handle of her knife, her eyes shifting in every direction, fully alert to her surroundings. DogDay grew more tense, wondering what had Angel so spooked. He looked ahead of them and noticed a large, fresh puddle of blood on the floor, torn pieces of fabric littered the ground, but there was no body. Not only that, but the door to the maintenance area looked like it was forced open from the middle. What caught his attention was five small impressions in the metal door.
"This is where…." He whispered. He tried to burrow his face in Angel's shoulders, but his eyes were watching their surroundings.
Koa slowly moved forward, paying attention to her surroundings as she did so. She pulled her knife slightly out of its sheath as she walked around the blood on the floor. The only other evidence that Miss Delight was here aside from the blood and torn fabrics of her dress, was some golden blonde hair stuck on the door from when it came crashing down on her head. Koa could still hear the sounds of Miss Delight's bones compressing and crunching when she was crushed. Koa tried, and failed, to hold back a shudder, but not just from the memory of killing Miss Delight. The forced-open door and the missing body could only mean one thing: The Prototype had collected Miss Delight's remains.
Koa and DogDay shared a quick look of concern and fright, and Koa sped up her pace to get away from the hall, not wanting to find out just how close the Prototype really was.
Finally, they had made it to the underground caverns, walking and jumping along the damaged and unstable catwalks and platforms. After a while, Koa recognized the area where CatNap had built his shrine for the Prototype. Once the shrine was in her sight, Koa got low to the catwalk's floor. She motioned for DogDay to get off her back and to stay low and keep quiet. Koa checked the cavern grounds below her and DogDay. CatNap wasn't around. She sniffed the air to see if she could catch CatNap's lavender scent in the air. There was a smell of lavender in the air, but it was very faint, meaning CatNap wasn't around.
"OK, DogDay," she whispered quietly. "We're going to get your legs back. I saw them in the shrine when I passed by here earlier."
"Angel, I don't like this," DogDay whispered with fear in his voice. "What if he catches us!"
"That's why you're staying up here. You're going to keep watch while I go down there. If you see CatNap coming, give me some kind of warning signal and I'll hide."
"Angel," DogDay whimpered, "you shouldn't be doing this! Even if we get away with this, CatNap will notice someone messed with the shrine! And once he does…." DogDay paused started to hyperventilate.
"Shhh, DogDay. Breathe. Breathe." Koa whispered, rubbing DogDay's back to calm him down, which worked but not completely.
DogDay's breathing was still slightly erratic when he looked to Angel and pleaded, "Angel, please don't go down there."
"DogDay," Koa looked at him with reassurance in her features. "It's going to be okay. Can I trust you to keep watch while I'm down there?"
DogDay looked at Angel. She was risking her life for him again, this time with something a lot more dangerous than the Ruined Critters. DogDay sighed, releasing his tension slightly, and nodded in confirmation.
Koa nodded back. She looked away and checked her surroundings again. Still no sign of CatNap, she thought to herself as she stood up and walked along the ruined catwalk, leaving DogDay hidden.
When she made it down the unstable platforms, the shrine was in her line of sights. Then she remembered that the entrance to the Playhouse was nearby.
'AND IT'S STILL WIDE OPEN!!' Koa realized with horror.
She ran in the direction of the Playhouse, and launched the Grab-Pack's blue hand to its platform to lock the door. As it was loading, she heard faint snarling coming her direction. She prepped her flare gun to fire at the Ruined Critters. Just as glowing white eyes appeared out of the dark, the platform finished charging, and the door slammed shut on a Ruined Bubba Bubbaphant who had rushed at Koa. Koa released a huge sigh of relief, and released the blue hand from its platform. Now Koa could relax a bit, knowing the Ruined Critters were now, once again, trapped in the Playhouse.
She returned to the place where the shrine was standing, and glanced back to DogDay. She could tell he was wondering why she had suddenly run off, she quietly called out, "locked the Playhouse."
DogDay nodded in realization and understanding. She then gestured for him to keep watch for CatNap and he nodded again. Koa returned to the task at hand and approached the shrine.
'It really is a lot bigger up close,' Koa thought to herself once she was standing in front of CatNap's shrine.
She walked around the shrine to where CatNap had attached DogDay's legs to it. Seeing all these corpses and broken toy parts made Koa sick to her stomach. No doubt, these toys were murdered by CatNap as some kind of sacrifice for the Prototype. How CatNap could do this was beyond her.
Once she spotted DogDay's legs, she carefully removed them from the shrine incase the thing wasn't as stable as it appeared. Luckily, she managed to safely get DogDay's legs off of the shrine, but she saw the legs had suffered abuse from CatNap. There were patches of torn flesh from the legs and hips, and deep bruises as well. How these legs have not decayed by now was beyond her. Then again, these so called 'scientists' must have done something to these bodies to keep them from decaying and to keep them in good condition.
She looked around the shrine to see what she could use to patch up the wounds on DogDay's legs. She found corpses of some Ruined Critters littered around the shrine, some of them were miniature versions of DogDay. She grabbed a few of them, pulled out her knife, gave a silent prayer as what she was about to do made her want to vomit, and skinned the Ruined DogDays.
Once the final Ruined DogDay was skinned, Koa folded the skins and pocketed them, then lifted the legs to her shoulder and walked back to the platform. As she walked away, she remembered a Bible verse from the Book of Leviticus, chapter 26, verse 30:
'I will destroy your pagan shrines and knock down your places of worship. I will leave your lifeless corpses piled on top of your lifeless idols, and I will despise you.'
Koa looked back at the shrine with disgust. Once she was near the catwalk, she used her Grab-Pack to pull her and DogDay's legs up to the platform. Once she was on the platform, she place DogDay's legs down and carefully jumped back down to the cavern grounds. Once she was in front of the shrine again, she stared long and hard.
'They deserve proper rest instead of being used as parts for a pagan shrine.'
She looked to her left, and spotted some gasoline tanks nearby. They must have been used to light lanterns before they got lamps working and saved them.
Perfect.
Koa walked over and grabbed two of the tanks, and walked back to the shrine, her face held no emotion.
DogDay watched Angel from his hiding spot on the platform.
'What is she doing?' He thought to himself as he watched Angel toss a liquid all over the shrine.
After she used four of those tanks to soak the shrine, she returned to where she placed DogDay's legs after she emptied and tossed away the tank. After a few minutes, Angel was next to DogDay's side, his legs with her, a smile on her face.
"Easy," Koa whispered happily.
DogDay shock his head unamused, "it was still incredibly risky, Angel." He then looked to the shrine, wondering what Angel had done. It was then that the smell of gasoline hit his nose.
DogDay tensed up in realization and shock. 'OH NO! SHE'S NOT GOING TO….'
He looked at Angel, who was standing up beside him, aiming her flare gun towards the shrine.
"ANGEL NO-"
POP!
FOOM!
DogDay's plea came too late. Angel had fired a flare at the shrine, and it burst into flames.
"Angel, what have you done?! Once CatNap sees this he's going to-"
"It's not going to help him." Angel interrupted.
"What?"
Koa watched as the fire burned. She didn't turn to DogDay as she explained, "I know he's going to be furious once he sees this, but neither his anger, his shrine, nor his idolatry to the Prototype will help him. Isaiah 16:12 reads:
'The people of Moab will worship at their pagan shrines, but it will do them no good. They will cry to the gods in their temples, but no one will be able to save them.'"
DogDay watched as Angel spoke, the fire reflected in her eyes, intensifying her speech.
"CatNap worshiping the Prototype has gotten him nowhere. Him building this shrine for the Prototype has gotten him nowhere. His blind rage will be his downfall, DogDay."
DogDay looked from Angel to the burning shrine, the fire crackling and popping. He knew Angel was daring, but not to this extent.
"I still don't like this, Angel. I worry for us both once he sees this."
Koa looked to DogDay, understanding in her features, "I understand your concerns, DogDay. Trust me, I'm scared too, but I also know what I'm doing. I know I'm playing with fire," she gave a small chuckle at her unintended pun, "but I know what happens when someone let's their anger control their actions."
DogDay glanced again to the burning shrine, smoke was starting to flood the caverns. He looked back to Angel when he heard her scoop up his legs and place them on her shoulder. She motioned for DogDay to come closer for her to pick him up, and he allowed her to. Koa stole one final glance to the shrine. It had collapsed to the ground, but the fire was still blazing. She made her way back to the school to find a safe place to reattach DogDay's legs and clean his wounds.
By the time they were long gone from the caverns, a tall, feline figure came stalking towards the still burning ashes of the shrine.
Micah 5:13
I will destroy all your idols and sacred pillars, so you will never again worship the work of your own hands.
