Mid November, 1966

The headlights of a black '57 Chevy illuminated the dirt road of a local hangout spot outside of a small West Virginia town. During World War II, the area was home to a large munitions factory, said munitions stored in concrete domes refereed to as "igloos." Following the war, the area was abandoned and designated as a wildlife prserve, the abandoned buildings of the affectionately called "TNT Area" having became a haven for the local wildlife.

But, as of recently, it has become home to something more sinister...and foreboding.

As the black automobile sped down the road, the two couples inside where laughing and joking around. In the front seat sat Humphrey and Kate Chambers. In the back was Kate's sister, Lilly Reynolds and her husband Garth. Truth be told, the two couples where on their way to the TNT Area, which had become a very popular "Lover's Lane" outside of Point Pleasant. And, much to a blushing Kate and Humphrey's amusement, Garth and Lilly apparently couldn't wait as they were making out in the back seat, running their hands over each other.

"Guess they couldn't wait," Humphrey chuckled as he turned past one of the abandoned igloos. Kate merely rolled her eyes, giggling as she snuggled into her husband's side.

"Can you blame them" she giggled, "this is pretty exciting."

Chuckling along with his wife, Humphrey soon received a pleasant surprise. In an instant, Humphrey was trying to balance watching the road and enjoying his wife's lips against his own. But, before Humphrey could become too engrossed in the act, something in the corner of his eye caught his attention.

"Woah," he said after abruptly pulling away from Kate and slamming on the breaks, promptly interrupting Garth and Lilly, the former sending his brother-in-law an agitated glare.

"What the hell, Humphrey!" Garth growled, only to notice along with Kate and Lilly what had caught Humphrey's attention. From inside the dark entrance of one of the vacant igloos, the group could make out what appeared to be two, large red circles reflected by the car's lights, almost like bicycle reflectors. Only, to the two couples' collective horror, the circles started to move, revealing them to be eyes.

Out of the dark igloo, a dark figure shambled forward, wobbling slightly as if it couldn't keep its balance. From what the party could see, the creature seemed to possess the body of a man which was covered with dark grey fur. In terms of size, the creature stood at seven to eight feet tall, and seemed to stand on two, muscular legs. Staring at the group for a few moments, the creature suddenly turned and hobbled behind one of the nearby buildings, leaving the young quartet petrified.

"Humphrey," Kate began worriedly. Luckily, she didn't have to have say anything else as Humphrey had the same idea. Making a huge u-turn, Humphrey hit the gas, the spinning tires kicking up dirt and gravel to get as far away from the area as possible. And for a few moments they seemed to be in the clear. That is until, just as they passed an billboard on Route 62, they saw what appeared to be the same creature watching them from a nearby hill.

"CHRIST, THERE'S TWO OF 'EM!" Garth yelled. But immediately after, their eyes widened in horror as the creature spread a pair of massive wings, wings that seemed to have a ten-foot-span. Without so much as a single flap, the creature shot into the sky...

And began gliding after the car.

"FASTER HUMPHREY!" Lilly screamed tears of fear in her eyes as Garth held her close. From the rear-view mirror, Humphrey could see the creature gliding back and forth as it chased after the car. In a desperate attempt to lose the creature, Humphrey began make sharp turns, only to watch in horror as the creature kept up with ease.

"DAMMIT HUMPHREY, FASTER!" Kate yelled. Looking down at his speedometer, Humphrey's eyes widened at what he saw.

"I'M ALREADY GOING A HUNDRED!" Humphrey yelled back before everyone's blood ran cold at the sound of a nauseating, ear splitting shriek, followed by the sound of what could only be the creature's wings beating against the roof of the car. Before long, the chase had reached the edge of the town limit. Once they did, the group was able to relax a little as the creature suddenly veered off into a nearby field, disappearing from sight into the darkness.

Upon reaching town, the two couples made their way for the police station, where Deputy Jaime "King" Ramirez was on duty. While King didn't believe them at first, he knew that they were good kids and definitely terrified of something. Following the group back to the TNT Area, King began sweeping his flashlight around the area, including inside igloos and on the tree-line, all while the four youngsters opted to remain in the safety of Humphrey's car. But what seemed to confuse, and slightly terrify him, was his radio picking up strange static.

"What the hell" he whispered.

"King," Lilly called worriedly, catching King's attention only to direct him to point his light in the direction of a nearby coal field, where a large cloud of coal dust had been kicked up. Needless to say, the five, who at this point were outright terrified, had seen enough and rushed back into town, where Garth and Lilly, too afraid to travel home, stayed with Kate and Humphrey, the four staying up with The lights on until morning, each too fearful to fall asleep.

The next day, after giving their story to some reporters, the two couples returned to the TNT Area, where they found interesting tracks that appeared like two horseshoes put together...but smooth. At that moment, they were all gripped with an overwhelming sense of fear as the fur on their bodies stood on end, each getting the chilling feeling that they were being watched. Looking toward one of the buildings that housed some boilers, Garth's blood froze at what appeared to be a hint of movement.

"Something just flew up into one of the boilers," he whispered to the others.

They didn't bother to stay and find out what.

Before long, the story of the "Mothman" spread like wildfire, more and more sightings popping up and filling the townspeople with fear. Not only that, but the town and the surrounding area reported seeing strange lights in the sky, with almost every witness receiving subsequent, eerie visits from mysterious wolves dressed in black, threatening them to keep quiet about their experiences. Through the next year, the sightings kept coming, until, on that December, when tragedy struck.

During the evening rush hour, the Silver Bridge, an aluminum suspension bridge that spanned the Ohio River between Point Pleasant and Galopolis, Ohio, suffered a structural failure in a single eye-bar, causing the bridge to collapse, taking with it forty-seven souls. Luckily, the Chambers and Reynolds were at their homes, but they had learned of the loss of some very dear friends. But one thing still filled them with even more dread.

Prior to the collapse, many people claimed that they saw the Mothman on top of the bridge before flying off, thus starting the legend that the winged menace was a harbinger of doom. And even though over the years the Mothman has been seen many times all over the world...

It has never again been seen in Point Pleasant.
