Authors note: I've never done anything like this before. I love to write but have never put anything out there for people to read. I have a tendency to become obsessive and had only ever watched the anime for Naruto. After hearing that the original manga is even better I read it. I already shipped Naruto and Sakura together when I watched the anime but after reading the series, it only reinforced my opinion that these two characters shared a bond unlike any other. My aim in writing this is purely for my own headcanon but thought it was rather good so I wanted to share it with people who think as I do.
Feel free to tell me what you think by leaving a review. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy it!
Naruto sat on the familiar bench, staring out at the village that stretched before him. The fading sunlight bathed everything in a warm glow, but he felt cold. This bench, this very spot, had always held a special place in his heart. It was here, all those years ago, that he—disguised as Sasuke—had told Sakura, "You have a large and charming forehead, it makes me want to kiss it."
He smiled bitterly at the memory. Back then, he thought those words might be enough to bring her happiness, even if they came from someone else's face. But now, years later, the words felt hollow. Nothing had changed. She still loved Sasuke.
"She still loves Sasuke." The statement played on repeat in his head, a constant reminder of the gap between them. Whenever he was around her, he couldn't shake the feeling of being second place, no matter how much he wanted to be her first choice. No matter how hard he tried to be there for her.
It hurt. It hurt more than anything.
Naruto leaned back against the bench, his eyes trailing up to the sky. It wasn't easy to watch the person you loved want someone else. It never had been. But for as long as he could remember, that had been his reality. Even after everything they had been through together—after all the battles, the moments of friendship, the times she leaned on him—it seemed her heart still belonged to Sasuke.
When Sakura had confessed to him in the Land of Iron, a spark of hope had ignited in him. He wanted to believe her, to think that maybe, just maybe, she had finally seen him the way he had always seen her. But that hope quickly faded when he realized the truth. She had only said it to stop him from finding out about the plan to kill Sasuke. Her words were a way to protect him from further pain, not an expression of genuine love.
"Why?" Naruto muttered to himself, clenching his fists. "Why would she say that she loved me and didn't care about Sasuke anymore?"
He had tried to understand, but nothing made sense. If she didn't love him, why say it? If she did… Why take it back? His head swirled with confusion, frustration, and a pain he couldn't fully put into words. Every time he thought about it, his heart felt heavier, weighed down by the uncertainty of where he stood with her.
He had spent so long caring about her, loving her. But now, he didn't know what to believe anymore. Did she love Sasuke? Did she even know what she felt? Or was it all just another layer of complexity that he didn't know how to untangle?
Naruto ran a hand through his hair, letting out a deep sigh. The only thing he was sure of was that, despite everything, he still wanted her to be happy. If that meant she chose Sasuke, then so be it. All he had ever wanted was for Sakura to find happiness. Even if that happiness wasn't with him.
But the thought of her never seeing him the way he saw her—of her never loving him back—it hurt more than anything. And no amount of training or fighting could make that pain go away.
Just then, a quiet sound of footsteps approaching snapped Naruto out of his thoughts. He glanced up, his heart skipping a beat as he saw Sakura walking toward him.
Naruto quickly wiped at his face, hoping to clear away the few tears that had escaped before Sakura noticed. He stood abruptly, his heart racing as she approached.
"Sakura-chan," he greeted, his voice slightly shaky. He hadn't expected her to find him here, especially not now when he was feeling so vulnerable. "What are you doing here?" he asked, trying to keep his tone light and casual, though his surprise was clear.
Sakura stopped a few steps away from him, her expression soft but a little hesitant, as if she had been wrestling with something in her mind. "I've been looking for you, Naruto," she said, her eyes meeting his. "I... I needed to talk to you."
Naruto blinked in confusion. "You've been looking for me?" he repeated, not quite sure why she'd want to find him, especially after everything that had happened between them recently. He could still feel the weight of their unresolved feelings hanging in the air between them, like an invisible wall they hadn't yet crossed.
Sakura offered a small, knowing smile. "Yeah. I went to Ichiraku, but you weren't there. I checked the training grounds, too."
Naruto shifted, feeling slightly off-balance. "Why were you looking for me?" he asked, trying to steer the conversation somewhere—anywhere—that didn't involve his own conflicted emotions. He didn't want her to see the turmoil he had been wrestling with, especially not now.
Sakura shifted slightly, as if weighing her next words carefully. "I... I've been thinking a lot. About everything." She looked him in the eye, her voice quieter now. "About what I said in the Land of Iron. About you, about Sasuke… everything."
Naruto's heart thudded painfully in his chest at the mention of her confession. He couldn't help but wonder if this was the moment when she'd finally tell him the truth—that it was all just a lie to protect him. His stomach twisted with anxiety as he waited for her to continue.
Sakura took a deep breath and stepped closer to Naruto, her expression softening. Gently, she reached out, taking his hand in hers. Naruto froze for a moment, his heart pounding in his chest as she gave his hand a small tug, gesturing for him to sit down on the bench beside her.
Naruto hesitated, but as he looked into her eyes, something in him gave way. He let her guide him, sitting down, though the weight of the moment hung heavy between them. As soon as they sat, a flood of memories rushed through his mind. The last time they had sat here, all those years ago, when he had awkwardly complimented her forehead in his disguise as Sasuke. He had wanted so badly to make her smile back then. He still did.
But this moment was different.
Sakura sat beside him, her hand still in his. She stared at the ground for a moment, clearly trying to find the right words. Naruto watched her in silence, waiting, feeling his own nerves rise as he sensed something important was coming.
Finally, she took a deep breath and began. "Naruto... There's been so much confusion in my heart for a long time. Especially about Sasuke." Her voice was steady, but there was a weight to her words that told him this was hard for her to say. "I've tried to understand what I've felt for him… why I've held onto it for so long, even when I knew it was hurting me. Hurting you."
Naruto's chest tightened at the mention of Sasuke, but he remained quiet, listening. He wasn't sure where she was going with this, but part of him dreaded hearing it.
"Sai..." Sakura continued, her voice a little quieter now. "He told me about the Hidden Leaf's decision to take Sasuke out. And he also told me about you. How you fought so hard to protect him, even when you were beaten within an inch of your life. But... you didn't give them any information about Sasuke. You still protected him, no matter what it cost you."
Naruto's brow furrowed slightly, his mind flashing back to that dark time. The pain, the exhaustion, and the burden of protecting a friend who had long since abandoned them all. He didn't like thinking about it, but hearing Sakura speak about it made the memory even more bitter.
Sakura turned her head, her gaze finding his again. There was a deep sadness in her eyes now. "I didn't know what to do when I heard about what happened to you, Naruto. I felt like everything was falling apart. The one person I thought I loved… and you, the one person who's always been there for me, no matter how much it hurt you." Her voice trembled slightly, but she kept going, needing to get it all out. "That's why I did what I did at the Land of Iron. I thought... if I could just convince you that I didn't care about Sasuke anymore, maybe it would take away some of that pain. But... I ended up making everything worse."
Naruto listened quietly, his throat tight as he absorbed her words. He remembered how he had felt back then—confused, hurt, and unsure of what to believe. Hearing her explain it now, though, gave him a different perspective. He could see how much she had struggled with her own feelings, how hard it must have been for her too.
But that didn't erase the lingering doubt in his heart.
Sakura looked down at their hands, still holding onto his. "I'm sorry, Naruto. I'm sorry for everything. For putting you through all of this." She swallowed hard, her voice barely above a whisper. "I should've been honest with you from the start."
The silence between them felt heavy, but Naruto didn't pull away. He could see how much this was hurting her, and he knew now that her actions hadn't been out of malice—they had been out of fear. Fear of losing him. Fear of facing the truth. But the truth had to come out, and he knew that now.
And as much as his heart ached, there was still a part of him that couldn't stop caring about her, no matter how complicated their feelings had become.
Sakura kept her gaze fixed on the ground, her grip on Naruto's hand tightening as she prepared to continue. It was clear that the weight of her words was bearing down on her, and for a moment, it seemed like she might not be able to speak. But she took a deep breath, determined to lay everything out before him, no matter how painful it was.
"I don't expect you to forgive me for what I did, Naruto," she said quietly, her voice raw with emotion. "I know that I... I tried to manipulate you. In my confusion, I didn't know what else to do. And for that, I'm truly sorry."
Naruto's eyes softened at her words, but he remained silent, giving her the space she needed to get everything off her chest.
"Sai..." Sakura began again, her voice trembling. "He told me that you loved me. That you've always cared for me, more than just as a teammate or a friend." She paused, her eyes filling with a sadness that seemed to weigh her down even more. "But even knowing that... I still used your feelings. I tried to twist them to protect you from the truth, to keep you from finding out about the plan to kill Sasuke."
Naruto's heart clenched at her confession, hearing her admit what he had long suspected but hadn't fully let himself believe. It hurt, but he could see the anguish in her eyes—the guilt she'd been carrying all this time.
"There's no excuse for it," Sakura continued, her voice almost breaking. "There's no excuse for any of the things I've done to you, Naruto. For lying to you, for keeping things from you, for all the times I let you get hurt because of me."
She turned to him then, her eyes searching his, filled with remorse and vulnerability. "I've hurt you so many times, and I know that. And maybe I thought that by lying, by making that confession, I could somehow make things right between us. But... it only made everything worse."
Naruto looked at her, his chest heavy with a whirlwind of emotions. He could see how much pain she was in, how deeply she regretted what had happened. But more than anything, he saw the genuine remorse in her eyes—the raw, unfiltered truth of her feelings. It was as if all the walls she had built up over the years were finally crumbling down.
Sakura's hands trembled slightly as she continued, her voice barely more than a whisper. "I've been selfish, Naruto. I've been so wrapped up in my own feelings—about Sasuke, about everything—that I couldn't see how much you were hurting because of me. And I... I'm sorry for that."
For a moment, the two sat there in silence, the weight of her words hanging in the air between them. Sakura's heart pounded in her chest, bracing herself for whatever Naruto might say—or not say. She had laid everything bare before him, not knowing what would come next, but she knew she couldn't hold onto the guilt any longer.
Naruto, still processing everything, felt a mixture of hurt and empathy swell within him. He wasn't sure what to say—whether he could find it in himself to forgive her or not—but seeing how much this confession had taken out of her, he knew she was trying to make amends in the only way she knew how.
It was complicated—messy, even. But in that moment, despite everything, Naruto could see that Sakura wasn't trying to hurt him anymore. She was trying to heal.
After a few moments of silence, Naruto finally found his voice, his tone softening as he looked at her. "Sakura, I know you didn't mean to hurt me. I can't be mad at you, even if I wanted to be. You were just trying to protect me in your own way."
Sakura's heart raced at his words, relief washing over her. She blinked back tears, feeling a glimmer of hope amidst the heaviness in the air. "I just... I want you to know how truly sorry I am. I've spent so much time being confused, and I never wanted to drag you into my mess."
Naruto smiled gently, trying to reassure her. "You've always been there for me, even when you didn't realize it. I just want you to be okay."
Sakura nodded, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. She felt an overwhelming mix of gratitude and vulnerability as she stared at him, realizing just how much she needed this moment.
Naruto looked down, his expression heavy as he gathered his thoughts. "Since you're being honest, I should be too," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Seeing how much you cared for Sasuke... it hurt me. The way you used to look at him—it felt like I didn't matter at all."
He took a deep breath, his gaze still focused on the ground. "But I made that promise to you. If I could bring Sasuke back, it would make you happy. And there's no price I wouldn't pay to see you smile, even if it means it's not with me."
His words hung in the air, the weight of his feelings palpable. Sakura felt a knot form in her throat, her heart aching at the depth of his sacrifice and the love he held for her. She wanted to reach out, to tell him that he mattered more than anyone else, but the words seemed trapped inside her.
Sakura hung her head, her voice low but steady. "I don't love Sasuke anymore," she confessed. "And I don't know if I ever really did. It was all... childish, this obsession I had with him." Her fingers tightened on the edge of her skirt as she spoke, her words coming out slowly, but with conviction.
"I think the only reason I held on for so long was because he left so abruptly. I never had the chance to let go, to get closure," she admitted, her heart heavy with the realization. "But after everything—after he tried to kill me, after he nearly destroyed everyone I care about—it's different now. I still want him to come back to the village, but it's not the same. Not after what he's done."
She looked up at Naruto, her eyes reflecting the pain of her past confusion, but also a new clarity. "I can't love someone who's done all that. Not anymore."
Sakura took a deep breath, her eyes softening with guilt as she continued. "I'm sorry, Naruto," she whispered. "I'm so sorry I put the burden of bringing Sasuke back on you. It was never fair." She looked away for a moment, her fingers curling into fists in her lap. "I was so wrapped up in my own feelings, in my desperation to bring him back, that I didn't stop to think about what I was doing to you."
Her voice trembled slightly as she spoke, but she pushed through. "I should've seen your pain sooner. I should've understood what it was doing to you, how much it was costing you to keep that promise. But I didn't. And I'm so sorry for that."
She turned her gaze back to him, her eyes filled with remorse. "You've always been there for me, and I kept putting you through so much without ever realizing just how much it hurt you."
Naruto moved closer, his heart heavy with emotion. Without hesitation, he wrapped his arms around Sakura, pulling her into a comforting embrace. The warmth of his touch was gentle but firm, as if trying to shield her from all the pain she had carried for so long.
"I'd do it all again," Naruto whispered, his voice soft yet full of conviction. "Every last bit of it… just to see you smile."
His words hung in the air, tender and honest, as if they carried the weight of all the unspoken feelings he had held inside for so many years. He didn't need her to apologize; he just wanted her to know that he would always be there, no matter what.
Sakura's breath hitched, her heart aching with both sorrow and gratitude. She leaned into his embrace, feeling the steady beat of his heart, and for the first time in a long while, the overwhelming guilt she had carried seemed to ease, if only a little.
Naruto held her for several minutes, neither of them saying a word, just allowing the moment to stretch on. The world seemed to fall away as they found solace in each other's presence. But eventually, he slowly pulled back, looking down as if gathering the courage to speak.
"Sakura, there's something I've been holding onto for a while," he said quietly. "After the first time I fought Sasuke, and couldn't bring him back… I made this for you."
Sakura looked up at him, confused but intrigued, watching as Naruto fumbled through his bag and pulled out a small object. When he opened his palm, there lay a necklace with a beautifully sculpted wooden charm of a sakura tree in full bloom. The craftsmanship was simple but detailed—each petal carefully carved, painted with delicate shades of pink, just like the blossoms of the tree she was named after.
"I made it because… I thought when I finally brought Sasuke back to you, it'd symbolize your heart blooming again, you know? Like you'd find peace," Naruto explained softly, his eyes never leaving hers. "But I know things have changed now. I know it's different."
He held the necklace out to her, his voice barely above a whisper. "I still want you to have it."
Sakura stared at the necklace, her eyes widening with surprise and emotion. She hadn't expected this—this thoughtfulness, this gesture of pure kindness, all from the boy who had always been there for her, even when she didn't realize how much it meant. Tears welled up in her eyes again, but this time they weren't from guilt or sorrow. They were from the overwhelming realization of how deeply Naruto had always cared for her, even in ways she hadn't noticed.
She gently took the necklace from his hand, her fingers trembling slightly. "Naruto…" she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I don't… I don't know what to say. This is beautiful. You… you did all of this, even after everything?"
Naruto rubbed the back of his head, a small, embarrassed grin tugging at the corners of his lips. "Yeah, well, it's nothing fancy. But it felt like something I had to do, you know?" His blue eyes softened as he added, "And even though Sasuke isn't the answer… You still deserve to find happiness. You deserve to bloom, Sakura."
Sakura looked at the necklace, her heart swelling with emotions she was only now beginning to understand. She clutched the charm close to her chest, feeling the weight of everything it represented—the past, the present, and the possibilities of the future.
"Thank you, Naruto," she said, her voice full of sincerity. "For this… and for everything."
