Chapter seven: The Royal Wedding Part One

"Well, the Big Day is almost upon us. Man, it feels like time has just flown by doesn't it?" Josak smiled as he leaned on the battlements of the castle and watched the sun climb higher into the sky. It promised to be a beautiful day after the violent storm they'd had yesterday morning. The sky was a perfect blue and Josak could already feel the warmth of the sun against his face. He tilted his face towards the warmth, closed his eyes and smiled contently. He heard a chuckle to his right and opened his eyes to glance at the man beside him. "What?"

"It's just you looked like a big cat sunning himself just then. I almost expected you to start purring." Conrad laughed and Josak gave him a gentle playful shove on the shoulder.

"Can't a guy enjoy a moment of peace and quiet before the lazy good-for-nothing royals and assembled guests wake up?" Josak protested but his blue eyes were twinkling.

"As you just said; the Big Day is almost here so we won't have to put up with the guests for much longer." Conrad turned his gaze back to the town which was starting to stir with the rising sun. Josak noticed the worried look in Conrad's eyes so he shifted closer to his partner and reached out to take his hand.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Josak asked softly. He had a feeling he knew all the reasons for Conrad's worrying but he wanted to hear the other man say them. Talking helped, even when the person listening knew exactly what was wrong without you having to say a word.

"Maybe we should talk about what's right, it's a much shorter list." Conrad answered with a hint of bitterness in his voice. Josak frowned and gave Conrad's hand a squeeze.

"His Majesty put himself in this situation. There's nothing you could have done to prevent that night four months ago." Josak spoke gently but firmly. Conrad didn't look at him but his back stiffened. "And there's nothing you could have done to save Wolfram either." Josak added, watching as Conrad flinched in surprise.

"How did –"

"I know you as well as I know myself. I know you still feel guilt for leaving Wolfram behind in Big Shimaron because I feel that way too." Josak frowned as he recalled the feeling of the boat sliding off the beach, the way she started to rise and fall in the swell of the ocean as they left Wolfram to his fate. "Not a day has gone by since we left Big Shimaron where I haven't wished I'd stayed behind to look for Wolfram. I told myself that I could have saved him, and taken away the terrible pain that was caused by his passing. But when he returned, and I heard about the suffering he'd endured, I hated myself even more for leaving him there." Josak gave a short humourless bark of laughter. "In a way I think I would feel less guilty for my failure if Wolfram had died that day."

"Josak," Conrad stared at him for a moment then his face hardened. Before Josak could draw breath to ask Conrad what was wrong, Conrad swung him around to face him and kissed him full on the mouth. Josak jumped in surprise before instinct kicked in and his lips softened under Conrad's advances. He pulled the slimmer man close to his body and wrapped his arms around Conrad's waist. For a few long glorious moments, Josak lost himself in Conrad's passions. "Josak, you are an idiot." Conrad said as he pulled back for air.

"Um, I am?" Josak asked still lost in the fuzzy haze of passion.

"You didn't fail at anything," Conrad said staring into Josak's deep blue eyes. "You offered to stay and look for Wolfram but there wasn't time. If you had left the ship you would have been captured or killed, or both. You couldn't have helped Wolfram if you were dead or captured alongside him. And I would have lost two precious people." Conrad gently cupped Josak's face in his hands. "What Wolfram went through was terrible and I hate the men who did that to him, but it is not your fault."

"I hope you are listening to your own advice." Josak countered. "It wasn't your fault either."

"Wolfram is my little brother," Conrad said softly his eyes downcast. "I should have protected him."

"How could you have done that?" Josak took Conrad's hand in his and kissed the knuckles.

"It should have been me who stayed behind to fight those bandits while Wolfram took Yuri away. I wouldn't have been affected by the houseki stones the same way Wolfram was."

"And I could say the exact same thing: I should have stayed behind as I wouldn't have been affected by human magic. It was a spur of the moment decision by Wolfram that neither of us saw coming. Yes, with hindsight we would have been better choices but we didn't think of that at the time. Wolfram took action and we honoured his bravery by respecting his wishes for His Majesty to be safe." Josak kissed Conrad's forehead gently. "Neither His Majesty nor Wolfram should have been with us in the first place. Wolfram told us the reason we were attacked was because the leader recognized His Majesty."

"Everything is crystal clear when seen in hindsight," Conrad muttered with a sigh. "It just feels that fate has been far too cruel. Wolfram is captured, tortured, and loses everything only to be rescued, nursed back to health, and return only to find everything has changed in his absence. Damn it," Conrad pushed himself away from Josak's arms, "I should have kept a closer eye on Yuri. I never should have left the hall that evening and left him alone. I knew he wasn't in his right mind that night and I knew damn well Abby had her eye on him."

"For Shinou's sake Conrad, you can't mother His Majesty forever!" Josak said crossly. "He's almost eighteen years old for crying out loud. He is an adult. His mistake in going with Abby to his room and getting her pregnant are his and his alone. Marrying Abby and being a father to their child is the responsibility he must bear for his actions."

"I know that, I just wish I had been there to have talked some sense into him. I could have stopped all his mess before it started. Yuri wouldn't be marrying Abby and Wolfram would have returned to the home he remembered and –"

"And maybe he and His Majesty would have gotten back together?" Josak interrupted with a raised eyebrow. "Did His Majesty ever feel anything beyond friendship for Wolfram?"

"He could have done with enough time." Conrad said but he sounded unsure even to his own ears.

"If four years isn't long enough to realize love then perhaps the love is never to be realized." Josak said frostily.

"Remind me again how long it's taken us to get together?" Conrad teased with a fond smile. Josak snorted and pulled Conrad back into his arms.

"We're the exception to the rule. Besides, you were still recovering from a lost love and then I thought you were in love with His Majesty." Josak shrugged. "Indecision and uncertainty kill more relationships before they have a chance to start than any other emotion."

"I suppose," Conrad conceded with a sigh.

"And…" Josak hesitated then ploughed on. "Is it not unfair for Wolfram to be stuck in a loveless engagement? Is it not a punishment in its own right for someone to wait for the person they love to marry them when that person has no interest in them?" Josak glanced back at the castle that glowed bright in the early morning sun. "His Majesty's marriage to Abby is hardly a perfect match but it did free Wolfram to find someone to love him in return." Conrad said nothing but when Josak glanced at him, he saw a thoughtful expression on Conrad's face. Josak settled into silence and relished in the feeling of holding his man in his arms.

Thoughts of Wolfram's imprisonment still sent sharp stabs of guilt into Josak's heart. It wasn't so much because he cared for Wolfram, but for the pain he knew Wolfram's experience caused Conrad. Josak had never wished harm on Wolfram and what those bandits did to him disgusted Josak. Conrad loved his younger brother but he wasn't able to protect him. Conrad's pain was Josak's pain. Seeing Conrad hurt made Josak want to tear the world apart. But Josak also knew that guilt and regret solved nothing. The past was done and nothing could change it. He drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly. His Majesty was getting married tomorrow and he would soon be a father. Nothing short of Abby's sudden death could avert that course of action. The thought made Josak snort.

"What?" Conrad asked at the sudden noise.

"I was wondering if Wolfram was coming to the wedding." Josak lied on the spot. Conrad would be shocked if he knew Josak was entertaining the thought of Abby suddenly dropping dead. Not that he would ever hurt her. She carried an innocent life inside her that had not even drawn their first breath. To harm a pregnant woman was unforgivable as far as Josak was concerned.

"Waltorana certainly believed he would be," Conrad answered giving Josak a look that told Josak he knew Josak hadn't told the truth. Josak grinned bashfully. "But I would have thought he'd be here by now."

"Maybe the storm delayed him? It would have been very dangerous to be out in that weather." Josak shuddered at the memory of the storm that had hit the castle yesterday morning. Josak had seen many storms in his life but yesterday taken his breath away. The castle had been struck by lightning in no less than four places leaving charred stone behind.

"That would be the most logical answer." Conrad nodded. "I thought he might stay away though. You know how complicated things get when a lover attends their former lover's wedding. People will gossip terribly and assume Wolfram is going to make some grand spectacle of himself trying to 'steal' Yuri back or some such nonsense."

"I've gotta admit; I am a little nervous of that outcome myself." Josak said sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck. "Wolfram has always had a hell of a temper on him. And he's the possessive type too."

"He left without making a spectacle and I'm sure he'll be on his best behaviour for the wedding as well." Conrad said with certainty. "You forget how proud Wolfram is. He'll never let anyone see how Yuri's wedding is affecting him and he'd never stoop so low to ruin Yuri's wedding to spite him." Josak wasn't so sure but he didn't say so out loud. A sharp nudge in the ribs from Conrad told him that he knew exactly what he was thinking and didn't approve.

"What about that kid? What was his name? The good looking boy with purple eyes," Josak frowned trying to remember his name. He hadn't actually met the boy who saved Wolfram from the bandits but Conrad had told him about him and Josak had seen him around the castle.

"You mean Casper Falken?" Conrad grinned. "So he's your type is he?"

"He's far too young and skinny," Josak shook his head. "Besides, you're more my type." Josak winked and Conrad laughed. "But yes I was talking about him. Do you know if he's coming to the wedding? Damn that would cause a stir." Josak laughed.

"Yes it would," Conrad replied deadly serious. "There are already rumours going around that Casper is Wolfram's new lover. If they do come together people will assume they are a couple and Casper's presence is to snub Yuri. Then there's the social gap between them to consider. There are many people, Waltorana included, who would be most displeased to see the future Lord of the Bielefeld family marrying the son of a horse breeder."

"Casper's family is well off though aren't they? The Falken brand is famous, even in the human world. Isn't Ao from Falken stock?" Josak asked, thinking of Yuri's black mare.

"Yes she is but that's not the point. Casper is, at most, a merchant and Wolfram is a Lord. Abby is related to mother so that makes her high enough on the social pecking order for people to accept her marriage to Yuri, but I fear the same would not be said for Casper." Conrad shook his head with a sigh.

"Steady on Conrad, they're not even a couple yet and you're worried about their wedding?" Josak smiled and kissed Conrad's temple. "Besides, what Wolfram wants Wolfram generally gets."

"Wolfram has grown up a lot over the past four years. He is not the same snobbish and condescending mazoku he used to be." Conrad ran a hand through his hair. "I believe he has feelings for Casper and I also believe those feelings are returned."

"And that's bad…?" Josak asked slowly. Surly Wolfram finding love after four fruitless years with Yuri was a good thing?

"I want Wolfram to be happy and if Casper makes him happy then I will give them both my full support. But…" Conrad sighed sadly, "but the same could not be said for certain people who could make Wolfram's life very difficult."

"Lord Waltorana adores Wolfram, you know that." Josak smiled and slung a comforting arm around Conrad's shoulders. "He wouldn't disown Wolfram or anything drastic just because Wolfram chose to love someone below his station, as it was."

"Wolfram was going to be the Maoh at one point," Conrad reminded Josak. Josak shuddered at the memory. He couldn't picture Wolfram as the Maoh, it was too terrifying. "He is a very important person in mazoku politics and therefore under a lot of pressure to act as is expected of him."

"Well, the final decision is up to Wolfram and Casper." Josak said and stretched making his shoulders pop loudly. "All we can do is support them in whatever course they take."

"'We…'?" Conrad repeated with a grin.

"Your problems are my problems," Josak said simply. "Come on, the castle is waking up and we have the final preparations to make for the guard of honour for tomorrow." Conrad groaned loudly and Josak laughed. Taking his partner's hand Josak led him away towards the spiral staircase that would take them back to the main hall. It had fallen to Conrad to organize the guards who would make up the guard of honour for the wedding day and for the royal precession through the town. It was a nightmare task and Conrad was convinced Gwendal had given it to him on purpose so he didn't have to do it himself.

-:-

It was shortly after lunch when King Saralegi of Small Shimaron succeeded in cornering Yuri in a rare moment when he was alone. Since the first guests started arriving a few days ago Gunter had practically glued himself to Yuri's side to make sure the young King didn't say or do something stupid. If Gunter was called away to organize some last minute wedding crises, Gwendal or Conrad would step in and shadow Yuri everywhere. Even though things were still frosty between him and Conrad, Yuri greatly preferred his presence to the silent scowling Gwendal. Yuri couldn't tell if Gwendal was still angry with him or if the deep set scowl had become his usual expression.

But on this occasion Conrad was with Josak drilling the guards for the wedding procession, Gunter was overseeing the delivery of fresh flowers and Gwendal was off doing whatever it was he did when alone. Abby was suffering from morning sickness and had retired to her bedroom with her maid Sophia. Gisela had checked Abby over and informed Yuri that as long as she had small meals spread out through the day and drank plenty of water she would be fine. Gisela had also mentioned that the baby was strong and healthy, but Yuri had just nodded distractedly. At the onset of Abby's morning sickness Yuri had been struck by the sense that everything was fixed. In the deepest part of his brain he had still been hoping this was all some crazy dream and he would wake up one day with everything back to normal. But now that Abby was getting sick and he was getting married tomorrow, well, there was no denying it anymore. It made Yuri feel queasy.

"King Yuri, where are your chaperons this fine afternoon?" Saralegi chuckled as he walked up to Yuri. Yuri stopped walking and turned to Saralegi with a strained smile.

"Sara, do I really need to remind you that you can call me Yuri?" Yuri said by way of answer.

"Of course of course," Saralegi smiled and linked his arm with Yuri's before he could protest. "Yuri, it is strange to see you alone these days. I've been here three whole days and I haven't had a chance to talk to you properly." Yuri forced a smile and didn't tell Saralegi that the reason they hadn't spoken was because none of his advisors trusted Saralegi and they all suspected he was up to something.

"Well you have me to yourself for the moment at least." Yuri said with forced cheerfulness. "May I have my arm back though?"

"Why, are you worried that your bride might become jealous?" Saralegi laughed as Yuri's cheeks went red. "Had I been attending a wedding between yourself and Lord Bielefeld I would have feared for my health if I so much as smiled at you." Saralegi leaned forward as if sharing a secret. "Although, your new Lady Bride seems to keep you just as close."

"Abby is nervous around so many new people," Yuri said trying to cover his embarrassment. "That is why she likes to stay close."

"Oh, so it's not because she wants to stake a claim on you?" Saralegi looked sly. Yuri tightened his jaw and forced a smile.

"No," he answered.

"I find it quite hard to see many differences between the lovely Abby and the equally lovely Wolfram." Saralegi said thoughtfully, tapping his finger against his lips. "They both appear to be very attached to you while being equally fearful that if they don't hold onto you, you'll blow away in the wind like an errant leaf."

"I don't know what you mean, Sara. Abby knows I am true to her and we are to be wed tomorrow."

"That reminds me, I haven't had a chance to congratulate you on your engagement." Saralegi spun around to face Yuri, his long blond hair flowing around his shoulders. "I was so shocked to hear of your impending wedding I almost fell off my chair! Why, my first thought was Wolfram, thought lost and mourned most painfully by yourself, had made some miraculous return and to celebrate such an undoubtedly wonderful event you had finally set a date for your wedding." Saralegi shook his head looking up at Yuri through his purple tinted glasses. "When I read on and found I was most mistaken in my assumptions I was shocked all over again."

"Um, well, Wolfram was still missing when I proposed to Abby." Yuri stammered. Saralegi wasn't the only one who had mentioned the suddenness of his engagement and marriage to Abby after Wolfram's alleged 'death'. But when the subject came up before Yuri had had Gunter with him to help with the flowery diplomatic language.

"Yes, I heard he returned to you mere days after your engagement to Abby were decided. What happened to him? How did he escape from the dastardly clutches of those horrific men?" Saralegi linked his arm through Yuri's again and started dragging him around the gardens. Yuri gave up on any chance of escape and let himself be led.

"While Wolfram was a prisoner of the bandits they captured another mazoku who happened to be in the nearby village selling horses. He helped Wolfram escape and took him back to his father's horse stud in the mazoku lands to the North. Wolfram was badly hurt and he lost his memories, so he ended up staying at the stud for several weeks before his memories resurfaced. In the end, he was gone for ten weeks with no word." Yuri stopped talking as a sour taste filled his mouth at the thought of someone hurting Wolfram.

"And he returned home to find you had been taken by another." Saralegi sighed sadly. Yuri flinched and he knew Saralegi noticed. "Most unfortunate. It almost makes one wish Wolfram never remembered who he was doesn't it?"

"I'm glad Wolfram remembered who he is." Yuri said sharply. "It would have been terrible for Greta to never have seen him again. And his family was going through hell not knowing what had happened to him."

"Oh Yuri please do accept my humble apologies, I did not mean to cause offence." Saralegi stopped walking to bow. "I merely meant that after going through all of that Wolfram had to face another loss, it must have been hard for him."

"Since when did you care so much about Wolfram? I thought you didn't like him?" Yuri asked before he could stop himself. He grimaced, that had sounded like an accusation.

"Wolfram and I shared a common interest which sometimes caused friction between us." Saralegi smiled pointedly in Yuri's direction. Yuri blushed and scowled. "So who was the dashing hero who saved dear Wolfram from his terrible fate?"

"His name is Casper Falken," Yuri muttered feeling a familiar rush of what felt disturbingly like jealousy.

"Falken, I know that name from somewhere." Saralegi frowned. "Is he a merchant?"

"No, his father breeds horses."

"Ah," Saralegi snapped his fingers and grinned. "That is where I know his name! I have a horse in my stables carrying a Falken brand. His family really do turn out the most magnificent horses."

"Good for him," Yuri muttered sourly.

"Why Yuri, I detect a hint of dislike in your tone." Saralegi leaned forward and invaded Yuri's personal space. "Could it be that you don't hold Mr. Falken in very high esteem?"

"I think Casper was very brave and selfless to risk his life to save Wolfram." Yuri forced himself to smile but it came out more like a grimace.

"Oh that is without question," Saralegi gasped as if Yuri had been accusing him of thinking lowly of Casper's efforts. "But that doesn't make you like him."

"I have no logical reason to dislike Casper. Quite the opposite in fact, I have every reason to hold Casper in high regard." Yuri bit his tongue to stop himself from saying that he thought Casper was a devious snake. He had no evidence that Casper's intentions towards Wolfram were anything but honourable. There was just something about Casper that put Yuri's hackles up.

"Hmm, and yet logic so rarely has a say in the matters of the heart, wouldn't you agree?" Saralegi smirked and Yuri suddenly felt uncomfortable. "So where is the lovely Wolfram? I haven't laid eyes on him since my arrival."

"Wolfram departed for his Uncle's home in the Bielefeld lands shortly after his return in order to recuperate. He was still suffering from the injuries inflicted during his captivity." Yuri sighed sadly and worried his bottom lip with his teeth. Any reminder of the pain Wolfram suffered for him filled him with an overbearing sense of guilt.

"I suppose Wolfram needed time and solitude to heal the wounds." Saralegi said gravely.

"He told me he would carry the scars of his imprisonment for the rest of his life." Yuri said quietly.

"That's terrible but not the wounds I was referring to." Saralegi answered glancing sideways at Yuri. Yuri looked puzzled. "I meant the psychological wounds from hearing that his fiancé was no longer his." Saralegi watched as Yuri jerked backwards as if he'd stabbed him. "It must have been a shock, to be gone for ten weeks and return to find out that your fiancé is not only engaged to someone else but that the wedding is set to happen in mere months. I'm not surprised the lovely Wolfram needed some time alone after hearing that."

"It was an unfortunate coincidence that Wolfram returned after my engagement to Abby was announced. I didn't do it to hurt him. I truly believed that Wolfram had died. And my engagement to Wolfram was annulled before I even met Abby." Yuri felt like a broken record. How often had he said the exact same words? Saralegi's words cut into his heart like tiny shards of glass.

"Yes I heard the ten nobles had annulled your engagement to Wolfram." Saralegi nodded sadly. Yuri stared at him in shock. How did Saralegi know these things? "Such a sad occasion. But, you dragged yourself from your mourning and found a beautiful woman to take Wolfram's place." Saralegi said it so innocently it was almost possible to miss the sly grin and hidden meaning behind his words.

"I never thought of Abby as Wolfram's replacement!" Yuri snapped.

"I never thought for a moment you did," Saralegi started walking again and Yuri had no choice but to follow since Saralegi still had a grip on his arm. "But, well, you must admit your engagement to the lovely Abby came rather suddenly." Yuri said nothing and Saralegi smirked. "So when is she due?"

"I don't know what you are talking about." Yuri answered, patting himself on the back when his voice came out steady.

"The only reason I can imagine for such a sudden engagement and fast tracked wedding is that the young Lady is bearing fruit, so to speak."

"That could simply be a failure of imagination on your part." Yuri answered surprising even himself. Saralegi threw back his head and laughed.

"Indeed it could be! But is it not law in mazoku lands that a child born outside of marriage cannot inherit their father's wealth or position?" Saralegi grinned as Yuri flinched again. "So a Maoh having a child outside of wedlock would be quite the scandal."

"Sometimes Sara, I wonder if you have a spy planted somewhere in my castle. You know far too much," Yuri said grimly. Saralegi tapped his nose with an elegant finger and smiled secretively.

"A true King never reveals his sources." Saralegi said simply. Yuri huffed but said nothing. "So, when is the bundle of joy due to arrive? Oh come on Yuri, you can rely on my discretion." Saralegi laughed as Yuri hesitated and looked nervous.

"Within the next five months," Yuri said reluctantly.

"How marvellous!" Saralegi cheered launching himself at Yuri for a hug. Yuri stumbled back in surprise. "You must be excited to be a father."

"More nervous than excited actually," Yuri said glancing around to make sure no one heard Saralegi's outburst.

"I understand of course, it is a huge responsibility." Saralegi paused and pursed his lips in thought. Yuri smothered the impulse to shake him as he knew Saralegi was keeping him in suspense on purpose. "Yuri, I can't help but wonder…did you ask Abby to marry you just because she carries your child? You were engaged to a man before. Or does your taste run both ways?"

"I proposed to Wolfram by accident. I never had any intention of marrying him." Yuri blustered, his cheeks hot.

"What a cruel thing to say." Saralegi sounded almost shocked. Yuri jumped as if slapped.

"What?"

"To say it was an accident and that you never intended to marry Wolfram after being engaged to him for years is cruel. What would you have done if Wolfram had not gone missing and your engagement annulled?" Yuri opened his mouth to answer when he stopped. He'd never actually thought about that before. His marriage to Abby was only happening because Wolfram had vanished and the noble families believed him dead. Yuri had always tried to get out of marrying Wolfram but Wolfram was nothing if not stubborn. And he was stubborn in his opinion that Yuri would one day return his affections and marry him. Yuri had pretty much given up on changing Wolfram's mind and accepted their engagement as part of their complicated relationship.

"I, um…" Yuri trailed off.

"As I suspected," Saralegi nodded as if Yuri had said something of great value. Yuri swallowed as he was filled with a sense of foreboding. Sometimes he forgot how good Saralegi was at manipulating people into saying something, or revelling something about themselves, that they didn't want to be known. By now they had wandered into the courtyard and Yuri was aware of a press of bodies and horses but he didn't give them much thought. The castle was alive with activity like a kicked ant's nest at the moment. "So will Wolfram be attending your wedding to the lovely Miss Abby?" Saralegi suddenly asked breaking Yuri from his daydreams.

"He most certainly will be in attendance." A voice that Yuri recognized at once said from behind him. Yuri turned to see none other than Wolfram himself standing behind him looking haughty and aloof. Yuri drew breath to speak but no words came out. Wolfram looked amazing. He'd been pale, thin and tired looking when he returned to the castle but after three month's absence he'd changed completely. He almost looked back to how Yuri remembered him from before his capture. His gold hair shone in the sun and his emerald green eyes regarded him with an achingly familiar blend of disdain and exasperation. Robbed of speech, Yuri could do nothing more than stare.

"Wolfram, it's wonderful to see you looking so well!" Saralegi on the other hand, didn't share in Yuri's malady of vanishing vocal cords. "I was most disturbed to hear of your capture and subsequent disappearance. I sent Berius to Big Shimaron to search for you as soon as I received the letter from Yuri begging for my help. I was most distressed when he returned to me empty handed." Saralegi sounded so sincere Yuri almost believed him. Wolfram, on the other hand, simply arched an eyebrow.

"Thank you for your efforts in searching for me Your Majesty." Wolfram said politely with a small bow. "The bandits hideout was most cleverly concealed however, I believe Berius would never have found it unless he had prior knowledge of its location."

"I assure you, Wolfram, had I known your whereabouts I would not have hesitated to rescue you from a most dismal fate." Saralegi was still smiling but his shoulders had gone stiff. "Naturally, I am delighted to see you safe and well."

"Naturally," Wolfram echoed tilting his head and copying Saralegi's smile.

"Wolfram, the guard wants to know if the men are excused." Casper suddenly appeared over Wolfram's shoulder. He looked up and a surprised expression crossed his face at the sight of Yuri and Saralegi. "Oh, excuse me Your Majesty I did not see you there." Casper bowed.

"Do not concern yourself Casper." Yuri forced out a smile. Casper dressed up handsome. That fitted brown jacket and those tight black trousers made him look taller and older. Even though he appeared to be between eighteen and nineteen in Earth years Yuri hazarded a guess he was most likely about the same age as Wolfram.

"Ah, so this is our very own dashing hero, Casper Falken!" Saralegi swept past Wolfram to Casper, much to Wolfram obvious annoyance and Casper's bemusement. Saralegi took Casper's hand in his own and Yuri saw Wolfram glower. "It is such a pleasure to meet you Casper. You don't mind me calling you Casper do you?" Saralegi gave Casper a blinding smile and Casper smiled uncertainly back.

"You have me at a disadvantage, you know my name but I'm afraid I don't know yours." Casper responded.

"King Saralegi likes to have people at a disadvantage since it gives him power over them." Wolfram cut in before Saralegi could answer Casper. Saralegi gasped and turned to pout at Wolfram.

"Oh Wolfram, what a mean thing to say about me! But where are my manners, I am King Saralegi of Small Shimaron." Saralegi turned back to Casper and flashed a flirtatious smile.

"Your Majesty, it is an honour and a privilege." Casper bowed elegantly. Saralegi giggled and Wolfram huffed rolling his eyes.

"Please call me Sara; I don't go in for all those fancy titles." Saralegi laughed.

"Since when?" Wolfram muttered but if Saralegi heard him he made no indication. Yuri was starting to feel a bit annoyed at being ignored so he stepped into Wolfram's line of sight and waited for him to glance at him.

"How was your journey? I wasn't sure if you would be coming."

"I should have arrived yesterday but the storm prevented us from making any progress." Wolfram answered his voice clipped. "As the nephew of the Lord of the Bielefeld lands and sole heir to his titles, I felt honour bound to make an appearance to Your Majesty's wedding. It is, after all, a very important occasion in our history."

"I see," Yuri drew himself up and scowled at Wolfram. "I am indeed honoured to be graced with your presence. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come back to your home." Yuri knew he was being snide but he couldn't help it. What was Wolfram's problem? He was acting like he used to when they first met.

"I wouldn't have missed it for the world Your Majesty." Wolfram replied his voice distinctly cool. "I had to give my congratulations to the person who managed to get you to marry them without having to wait at least a year." With that said Wolfram turned away from Yuri and marched past Saralegi, who looked delighted, and Casper, who looked worried. Yuri stared after Wolfram fuming. That comment was unfair. Why did Wolfram take his unrequited feelings out on him? Was it his fault he didn't fall in love with Wolfram? Was he to be blamed for the fact he wasn't gay? With a scowl Yuri marched after Wolfram determined to continue this conversation. In the corner of his eye he saw Saralegi move to follow him but Casper blocked his path and engaged him in conversation. Yuri had a moment of grudging respect for Casper. He certainly didn't want Saralegi ear-wigging on his and Wolfram's conversation.

Yuri found Wolfram directing his men to untack their horses and rub them down before they were dismissed. Several of Wolfram's men saw him and bowed respectfully as he approached. Wolfram, however, didn't as much as glance in his direction. "Once the horses are stabled you may send the men home, Mosel." Wolfram was saying to a good looking older man dressed in a pale blue uniform.

"Yes Sir," Mosel saluted Wolfram before saluting Yuri. "Good afternoon Your Majesty."

"Afternoon," Yuri nodded and Mosel hurried away, glad to be out of the firing range.

"Did you require something Your Majesty?" Wolfram asked turning to face Yuri,

"Oh for goodness sake stop calling me 'Your Majesty'. Just Yuri will do." Yuri snapped in annoyance.

"My sincere apologies for my mistake," Wolfram said making Yuri frown. Before Yuri could question him further though, Wolfram was already walking away. Yuri made a frustrated noise and hurried to catch up. "You have more to say, Yuri?"

"I want to talk to you. We haven't spoken since you left and we hardly parted on the best of terms." And that is what they call an understatement, Yuri thought privately. He gulped and rubbed the back of his neck.

"Can we walk and talk at the same time?" Wolfram asked his voice perfectly even and his face a blank mask. "I wish to speak with my brothers."

"Err, yes, yes we can do that." Yuri stammered slightly. Wolfram strode through the doors into the castle and Yuri followed. He stumbled slightly at the sudden change in brightness but Wolfram strode onwards as if he hadn't noticed. Confronted with actually saying something to Wolfram, Yuri found his voice had stopped working again. He went through a hundred different possible starts to this conversation but dismissed them all in turn.

"You said you wanted to talk?" Wolfram sounded amused.

"Ah, yes…Wolfram, are you alright?" Yuri licked his lips. "I mean, are you getting better? You look good. All that fresh air must have done you some good."

"I am recovering well, thank you." Wolfram answered but his voice was devoid of any emotion. "Casper has been keeping an eye on me and making sure I don't push myself too hard."

"Oh has he?" Yuri's hackles went up and he tightened his jaw. "I see he hasn't gone back home yet."

"I invited him to stay at my Uncle's mansion as my guest." Wolfram's tone was guarded now. "I also invited him to the wedding."

"You did not inform me of that decision, or anyone else for that matter. Where exactly is Casper going to sleep? Did you not think turning up with an uninvited guest might cause problems?" Yuri didn't know why he was making such a fuss over one extra person. He was sure they could squeeze him in somewhere. But when Casper was involved, Yuri had found he had a tendency to overreact.

"I invited Casper so he's hardly an uninvited guest, and, as you just said yourself a few minutes ago, this is my home and I can invite whoever I want to stay here." Wolfram replied his tone sharp.

"He seems to be doing very well for himself," Yuri wondered out loud. "First he gets himself a nice invitation into the home of one of the ten nobles and then he gets invited to a Royal wedding."

"You sound like my Uncle," Wolfram said darkly. "He thought Casper unworthy of being in his presence because of his social status as well."

"I don't think he's unworthy and I couldn't care less what his social standing is." Yuri retorted, offended by Wolfram's accusing tone.

"Then why do you have a problem with him?" Wolfram rounded on Yuri, his green eyes flashing. Yuri stopped walking and glared back at Wolfram's red cheeks and fierce expression. "You've been nothing but rude to him since you met him."

"I'm suspicious of what he's up to," Yuri countered, his own cheeks growing warm. He hadn't followed Wolfram to start a fight. "He's following you around the place like he's your shadow or something! He's done his job, he's brought you home and collected his glory, why is he still around?" Wolfram stared at Yuri for several seconds in silence before he threw his hands in the air with a shout of exasperation.

"You really are just like Waltorana! Casper is my friend and he's 'still around' because he wants to be!" Wolfram fixed Yuri with a hot angry glare. "There are people in this world who actually enjoy my company you know, even though you never seemed to."

"Aha! That's what this is about isn't it?" Yuri pointed an accusing finger at Wolfram who looked startled. "You're keeping him around to guilt-trip me. That way you can snap out all these bitter, self-pitying lines about how I didn't love you back and how much you suffered for it. Well forgive me for not changing a fundamental part of myself just to please you."

"The world does not revolve around you, Yuri!" Wolfram half yelled. "I can be friends with someone without it being some kind of plot against you. I like Casper and he likes me. So if you have a problem with that you can take a running jump!"

"How can you like him when you know nothing about him? You've only known him a couple of months!" Yuri yelled back.

"You'd only known Abby for a couple of weeks before you got her pregnant." Wolfram shot back without missing a beat. "At least Casper and I are actually getting to know each other before we jump into bed together."

"Are you sleeping with him?" Yuri squeaked in shock. Wolfram turned red and shook his head fiercely.

"No I am not."

"But you just said you were!"

"I said no such thing!" Wolfram placed his hands on his hips. "Stop twisting my words. And since when did you have the right to dictate to me who I have a relationship with anyway? We're not engaged anymore as you relish in reminding me."

"I do not relish in reminding you of the annulment of our engagement! It wasn't even my decision, remember? I thought you were dead!" Yuri spread his hands in frustration.

"A very convenient excuse," Wolfram snorted.

"It's not an excuse, and you know damn well it isn't. And while I may not have any right to interfere in your love life I have the right to worry about some guy taking advantage of you."

"Why?" Wolfram stepped forward until he was almost nose-to-nose with Yuri. "Why should you give a damn?"

"Because you're my friend!"

"Well lucky me!"

"What in Shinou's name is going on here?" A voice interrupted making Yuri and Wolfram leap apart as if caught doing something scandalous. Yuri turned, his heart pounding so loud he could hear his blood rushing in his ears, and saw Conrad standing before him with his arms crossed over his chest. Josak was standing slightly behind Conrad with his eyebrows disappearing under his hairline. "Wolfram? When did you arrive?" Conrad stared at his brother as if he'd just dropped out of the sky.

"Conrad," Wolfram coughed and visibly tried to compose himself. He was breathing hard and his cheeks were flushed pink. Even his hair was standing on end. "I arrived less than ten minutes ago actually."

"At least you're getting the shouting match over and done with early," Josak commented lightly and received three glares for his efforts. Josak raised his hands in surrender.

"It's good to see you again Wolfram." Conrad smiled but his eyes were hard. "Although, perhaps it is undignified to have a yelling match in the castle on the eve of a wedding when we are surrounded by guests?" Conrad suggested lightly. Yuri dropped his head to look at his feet like a naughty child and Wolfram shuffled in embarrassment.

"You are correct Conrad, it is most unbecoming." Wolfram coughed. "Please accept my apologies for my unsightly behaviour Your Majesty."

"No apologies are necessary Wolfram. I am sorry too," Yuri smiled timidly but Wolfram did not smile back. There was an uncomfortable silence that was broken by Conrad clearing his throat.

"I assume you've returned in order to attend tomorrow's events?" Conrad smiled warmly.

"Yes I did," Wolfram, now composed and calm, smoothed down the front of his uniform. "I also invited Casper Falken to the wedding, he arrived with me today. Can we find a room for him at the castle?"

"I suspected we would be seeing more of Casper so I took the liberty of keeping a room within the castle reserved for him as well as a place at the table for lunch tomorrow." There was a twinkle of amusement in Conrad's eyes as he regarded his younger brother. Wolfram huffed but didn't blush as Yuri had expected him to.

"It would have been prudent to have sent word that Casper would be attending the wedding." Yuri said rebelliously. "It's a good thing Conrad thought ahead."

"I'm sure Casper will be made very welcome at the castle." Conrad cut in before Wolfram could reply, giving Yuri a hard look. "Where is Casper now?"

"In the courtyard the last I saw of him." Wolfram answered. "I left to find you."

"Josak, would you mind finding Casper and showing him to his room? Give him a quick briefing of the events for tomorrow as well could you?" Conrad turned to smile at Josak who nodded.

"What room is he in?"

"East Wing, third floor and fourth door on the right." Conrad replied taking Yuri by surprise. Could Conrad actually remember the exact location of each room and who was staying here? Maybe he had just made a point of remembering Casper's room? Josak nodded with a smile, and giving Wolfram a wink, walked down the hallways whistling merrily. "Yuri," Yuri turned his attention to Conrad, "Abby has been looking for you."

"Oh," Yuri felt a bizarre urge to blush. He felt awkward talking about Abby in front of Wolfram. "Where is she?"

"She was in your study a while ago but I'm not sure where she is now." Conrad informed him.

"I'd better go and find her." Yuri hesitated and glanced at Wolfram. Wolfram narrowed his eyes and glared at him. Deciding against saying anything further, Yuri set off looking for his soon to be wife. He glanced over his shoulder to see Conrad clap Wolfram on the shoulder before pulling him into a hug. Yuri felt a pang of regret for the loss of the close relationship he used to share with Conrad. He couldn't remember the last time Conrad had given him a friendly smile or hug. He was surrounded by people yet he'd never felt so lonely in his life. With a sigh, Yuri turned the corner and the brothers disappeared from his view.

Casper watched out of the corner of his eye as Wolfram, with Yuri hurrying after him, marched away. Satisfied they would have a moment alone; Casper turned his best and brightest smile to Saralegi. Casper had heard of the boy King but he didn't know much about him. He took in the long pale blond hair, the white suit, and the purple tinted glasses covering golden eyes. He was a beautiful man but there was a predatory look in his eyes which hinted at a sharp intelligence behind his pretty face. "This is a bit overwhelming for me, meeting Royalty like yourself; Your Majesty." Casper rubbed the back of his neck and laughed. "I'm not used to rolling in such high circles."

"Just remember we're all the same underneath and you'll do just fine." Saralegi smiled at him. "And call me Sara, Casper."

"I'm not sure that would be appropriate Your Majesty." Casper answered with a small bow. Saralegi chuckled.

"Wolfram certainly seems attached to you." Saralegi smirked leaning closer. "Although I can see what drew him to you. You are a very handsome man, Casper."

"Thank you Your Majesty," Casper answered uncomfortably. He could feel his cheeks starting to heat up. As Saralegi gave him a calculating look, Casper had the uncomfortable feeling that Saralegi was easily far more dangerous than Rick, the former leader of the bandits.

"You've spent a lot of time with Wolfram, haven't you? You saved his life in Big Shimaron and put yourself in great danger by doing so. You were with him while he was recovering at your father's stud, you travelled all the way to Shinmakoku with him, and then you followed him to the Bielefeld lands only to accompany him to Yuri's wedding." Saralegi was still smirking. Casper mentally braced himself for a battle of wits and reminded himself never to answer a question without thinking. "There are some very interesting rumours regarding your relationship with Wolfram flying around."

"In my experience, Your Majesty, the more interesting a rumour becomes the further it is removed from the truth." Casper answered smoothly. Saralegi laughed and placed a hand on Casper's shoulder.

"Handsome and wise, is there anything not to like about you?"

"A wise man is someone who realises there is still much to learn." Casper resisted pushing Saralegi's hand off his shoulder. "And I have a darker side just like everyone else."

"Saying that just makes you more interesting," Saralegi grinned. "So tell me, is there anything between you and Wolfram? I only ask out of concern for Wolfram of course." Saralegi shifted closer and pinned Casper in place with a mournful look. "Poor Wolfram, he's lost so much so quickly I only hope something good can come from this mess."

"I am well aware of what Lord Bielefeld has lost of late. But he is recovering well and putting his life back together."

"You haven't answered my question." Saralegi's grin broadened.

"Lord Bielefeld and I are simply friends." Casper said reluctantly, ignoring the pain of regret that sentence inflicted on him.

"Really…it's just you seem a lot closer than friends to the causal eye." Saralegi tapped his finger against his lips. "And it is most interesting that you called Wolfram by his first name earlier but you're now calling him 'Lord Bielefeld'."

"I…um…I didn't want to appear too informal." Casper stammered. He'd gotten used to calling Wolfram by his first name when they were alone and hadn't thought to call him by his title once they were back in the castle. He kicked himself as he saw Saralegi smirk knowingly. He should have known someone as shrewd as Saralegi would notice that slip.

"So there's nothing romantic between you and Wolfram, and yet you don't want to appear too informal?" Saralegi leaned forward until they were nose to nose. "I think the man doth protest too much."

"Your Majesty I must protest against your behaviour." Casper stepped back from Saralegi with a frown. "My relationship with Wolfram is not your concern or your business."

"You called him Wolfram that time." Saralegi pointed out looking perfectly unconcerned in the face of Casper's annoyance. Casper felt irritation start to rise and he forced it down. Saralegi wanted to rile him up and he wasn't giving him the satisfaction of seeing him rattled. "I wonder what Yuri thinks of your relationship with his ex-fiancé?" Saralegi hummed and gave Casper a sideways look from the corner of his eye.

"I really couldn't say," Casper answered swallowing down an urge to deck Saralegi. Hitting a King of a human kingdom in the face at the Maoh's wedding would go down like a lead balloon. He doubted Wolfram would be able to get him out of the political storm that would cause.

"He didn't look very happy to see you, did he?" Saralegi continued as if Casper hadn't spoken. "I must say I'm impressed; I didn't think there was anyone in this world Yuri didn't like. Maybe our dear Yuri continues to harbour feelings for the lovely Wolfram?"

"You would have to ask him." Casper replied, giving himself a mental pat on the back when his voice came out even. Jealousy curled in Casper's belly like a snake and refused to let go. Memories of Errol leaving him without a backwards glance came flooding back. But instead of Errol, it was Wolfram who walked away leaving him to pick up the pieces of his broken heart. Casper swallowed hard and forced the images from his mind.

"Oh I have believe me," Saralegi laughed, apparently oblivious to Casper's inner turmoil. "But Yuri has been well trained in avoiding questions he doesn't want to answer. And besides, what choice does Yuri have? He's to be wed tomorrow so even if he did want Wolfram back he can't have him."

"You are assuming Wolfram would take him back." Casper spoke without thinking. He bit his tongue as Saralegi grinned at him.

"True," Saralegi nodded. "But it is the forbidden fruit that tastes the sweetest, wouldn't you agree?" Casper was saved from having to answer that by the arrival of Wolfram's mother.

"Casper, it's so wonderful to see you again!" Cecile swept up to Casper and gathered him in a rib crushing hug before he could draw breath to greet her. Casper made a muffled protest as his face was squashed against Cecile's impressive bosom. Cecile released Casper and grabbed his hands in hers. "If you are here does that mean my Wolfram has finally come home?"

"Y-yes we arrived just minutes ago," Casper gasped trying to get his breath back. "Wolfram – I mean – Lord Bielefeld just left to find Lord Weller."

"Then we shall find him together!" Cecile linked her arm through Casper's and, ignoring his spluttered protests, turned to smile at Saralegi. "Please do excuse us, King Saralegi. I simply can't wait a moment longer to be reunited with my baby boy." Casper sniggered as he imagined what Wolfram would think of being called a 'baby boy'.

"Of course Lady Cecile, it is perfectly understandable." Saralegi covered his irritation well at having Casper whisked away. Cecile waved at him before half dragging Casper away towards the castle. She giggled and waved at all the young men who watched her breeze past, making Casper's face turn red at all the attention. He could almost hear the rumours starting; was Casper Falken romancing the former Queen now? Casper grimaced and sighed.

"Heavens what a loud sigh. Your thoughts must be unpleasant in the extreme." Cecile gave Casper a sly grin. "I certainly hope I am not the cause of such unpleasantness."

"No," Casper shook his head in horror. "Not at all Lady Cecile! I was just –"

"Relax my dear I was only teasing." Cecile cut in giving Casper a warm smile. Casper blushed and ducked his head feeling like country bum attending a high class dinner party. "I want to thank you, Casper." Cecile spoke breaking Casper from his gloomy thoughts.

"What for?" Casper asked in surprise.

"For being there for my son at a time when no one else was," Cecile answered softy. She turned her brilliant green eyes, so much like Wolfram's, to him and Casper saw a mother's worry for her child reflected in them. There were times when Casper forgot that aside from being a Queen, Cecile was also a mother. "I know Wolfram's brothers are there for him, as am I, but sometimes when a person is hurting what they need is the love of someone who is not blood to help them get past the pain."

"Wolf – err – Lord Bielefeld is a remarkably strong person Lady Cecile. He is healing in his own time," Casper trailed off as Cecile held up a hand. They were still walking and were well within the castle by now. The occasional maid or guard who hurried past on some errand or other barely gave them a second glance.

"Did Wolfram tell you that you could call him by his first name?" Cecile asked giving Casper a wide smile.

"Err, yes," Casper answered hesitantly.

"Then call him Wolfram," Cecile grinned at him. "We wouldn't want to upset him by you suddenly calling him by his title. He might think you are distancing yourself from him." There was an understanding look in Cecile's eyes and Casper felt the tension melt from his shoulders. "That's much better," Cecile smiled. "Now tell me, how is my Wolfram doing?"

Casper told Cecile about Wolfram's training with Waltorana's guards and his desire to reclaim his former fitness. The words flowed easily and Casper was struck at how easy it was to talk to Cecile. She listened quietly as he talked, her green eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and sympathy as Casper told her how Wolfram was pushing himself to try and put weight back on. But she smiled as Casper recalled some of their adventures with Greta while she was staying with them. She laughed when Casper told her about the lake incident and Casper had a feeling it had been awhile since she last laughed. Casper told her about his and Wolfram's horse race but he carefully omitted any details of the kiss or the resulting argument. Casper liked Cecile but he wasn't sure if she would approve of his actions. He knew Waltorana hated him and he didn't want all of Wolfram's family to feel the same.

"I am relieved," Cecile said as Casper finished speaking. "I was worried my son would be dealing with his emotions alone, but he has you." Cecile stopped walking and turned to face Casper. She cupped his face gently between her hands and a lump the size of a melon lodged itself in Casper's throat when he saw the unshed tears in her eyes. "Wolfram has the tendency to push people away when he feels vulnerable for fear they should perceive him as weak. He's always been aloof and cold but I believe he does this out of a desire to protect himself, lest he be hurt by the actions of others. He has a strong heart but he finds it difficult to open up and let people in. So thank you, Casper, for standing by him even when he doesn't want you there." Casper tried to swallow but the lump in his throat only seemed to get bigger.

"Wolfram is the strongest person I know." Casper managed to croak. Cecile nodded and gave him a warm smile that reminded Casper vividly of his own mother.

"He is strong, but he is also vulnerable and hides his insecurities behind his eyes. I should have paid him more attention during his younger years. He's grown up mostly alone and that's the way he feels his life should be." Cecile sighed sadly. "Yuri opened his heart for the first time and I thought the walls he'd built were finally coming down. But then this happens," Cecile shook her head. "However, after listening to you I now know that my youngest son's heart has not closed. You have no idea how happy that has made me." Casper didn't know what to say. There were too many different emotions rushing around his body for him to understand how he felt. Giving up the battle to try and form words, Casper threw caution to the wind and gave Cecile a hug. He heard Cecile gasp in surprise before she laughed a little shakily and hugged him back fiercely.

"I don't know what to say," Casper admitted as he stepped back. Cecile gently grasped his chin and tilted his face up to meet her gaze.

"You don't need to say anything." Cecile said softly. She looked happier, Casper thought. A light was in her eyes that hadn't been there before and she seemed taller, as if a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

"Um, I know there are some rumours about Wolfram and I going around but I can assure you they are entirely untrue and –" Casper stopped speaking as Cecile laid a finger against his lips.

"Whatever form your relationship takes with my Wolfram is your private business." Cecile said firmly. "All that matters to me is that you are both happy."

"But he's a Lord and I'm just –" Casper started in a rush but Cecile shook her head and pressed her finger a little harder against his lips.

"No more needs to be said, Casper Falken." That damn lump was back in Casper's throat. He nodded, unable to speak and Cecile grinned at him removing her finger from his lips. Casper thought it ironic that the previous Queen was so unconcerned about her son being in a relationship with someone below his station, whereas the Lord would consider it so vitally important that his nephew marry into the right social class. Casper knew who he believed to love Wolfram the most out of the two.

"There you are!" A voice boomed behind Casper making him jump. He turned to see a tall man with bright orange hair and blue eyes striding towards him. For a moment he thought the man was talking to Cecile but his blue eyes were fixed on him. "I've been round the castle about ten times looking for you."

"Um…sorry…?"

"Josak, is something the matter?" Cecile asked flicking a wayward curl over her shoulder.

"Not at all Lady Cecile, Conrad just asked me to find Casper and show him to his room." Josak smiled at Cecile.

"My room…?" Casper echoed. He'd half been expecting to be sleeping in the stables.

"Yes, you have a room in the castle for the duration of your stay." Josak informed him. Casper's mouth dropped open. "What, you thought you'd dumped in the barracks or something?" Josak laughed at the look on Casper's face.

"Or something," Casper smiled shyly.

"I won't keep you Casper," Cecile stepped forward and kissed Casper's cheek before he could blink. Cecile swept away leaving Casper cupping his cheek with a look of shock on his face.

"Getting cosy with the previous Maoh are we?" Josak winked at Casper who looked mortified.

"No of course I'm not!"

"She's a fine looking woman and many a man has been entranced by her," Josak continued still grinning. "But she's a bit old for you, no?"

"Yes, I mean no, t-that's not what's happening here!" Casper spluttered as Josak laughed, his voice echoing off the walls and filling the corridor with the sound of laughter.

Conrad had been getting Wolfram up to speed on the events planned for tomorrow when the subject of their conversation turned the corner and appeared before them. Abby didn't look surprised to see him so Wolfram guessed she must have already heard about his arrival. It irritated him to see how stunningly beautiful Abby looked in a pale green and golden gown with her hair tumbling over her shoulders. Her eyes however, were fixed on him with an unnerving intensity.

"Lord Bielefeld, what a surprise." Abby smiled but her eyes were cold. "I wasn't expecting to see you here on the eve of my wedding." Wolfram didn't flinch at the sharp reminder of who it was that was getting married in the morning. Instead he smiled and inclined his head in acknowledgment.

"As the heir to the Bielefeld title it would have been a far greater surprise had I not made an appearance." Wolfram answered calmly.

"Lord Weller, perhaps you could give me a moment to speak with Lord Bielefeld alone?" Abby turned to Conrad with a smile that could have frozen water during a heat wave.

"I'm not sure –" Conrad began but Abby cut him off.

"I only require a few moments of his time." Abby smiled and swished closer. "Unless of course, you fear that the Lord Bielefeld has unsolicitous intentions towards me?" Conrad tightened his jaw and Wolfram scowled.

"It's alright Conrad, I will speak with her." Wolfram kept his gaze fixed on Abby and she returned his stare. "We'll be fine."

"Wolfram –" There was a warning tone in Conrad's voice that spoke volumes.

"We'll be fine, brother." Wolfram repeated. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Conrad glance between them worriedly before slowly stepping away. Wolfram figured his brother knew that this exchange was bound to happen sooner or later and better it happened now rather than on the wedding day itself. Wolfram and Abby continued to stare the other down until Conrad vanished around the corner of the hallway. Wolfram doubted Conrad would go far though.

"Well, that's less crowded isn't it?" Abby said turning away from Wolfram and walking towards the window that overlooked the courtyard. "It's better for us to have this conversation in private, don't you agree?"

"Shall we dispense with the unnecessary pleasantries as I'm pretty sure neither of us means a word of it?" Wolfram answered crossing his arms over his chest. "Say what you've come to say Abby." Abby gave a short huff of laughter.

"You like to get straight to the point, I admire that." Abby turned to face Wolfram. "Very well I shall be as succinct as possible: what are your intentions?"

"I don't need to explain myself to you and I certainly don't need your permission to visit my home." Wolfram answered darkly.

"While that might be true that fact that you've returned now, after turning around and leaving several weeks ago, makes me wonder about your intentions." Abby tilted her head to the side and narrowed her eyes. "Can you not see how your actions could be interpreted as suspicious? Given the circumstances," Abby added with a half-smile that held no trace of humour.

"What circumstances would those be?" Wolfram asked watching annoyance flicker through Abby's blue eyes. "Could it have something to do with the fact that you entrapped my ex-fiancé into marrying you?"

"Is that what you think happened four months ago?" Abby said sounding surprised. "Or maybe that is what your brothers have told you? I can understand them portraying me as the evil seductress of this scenario to try and sooth your hurt pride."

"My brothers told me the truth; that you arrived here with my Uncle Stuffel while Yuri was at his lowest moment, you used his caring nature against him to worm your way into his affections, and then you took him to your bed while he was drunk." Wolfram snorted and shook his head.

"I see, so I'm not only a seductress but I'm also a scheming and conniving woman out to get her claws into the sweet innocent boy Maoh?" Abby smirked at the sarcasm in her voice.

"From what I've heard that pretty much sums you up, yes." Wolfram nodded. Abby's smile vanished and she gave him a cold look that would have made a lesser man shiver.

"You should be wary of taking what others say at face value." Abby warned. "People say lots of things and rarely make an effort to check if what they're saying is true or false."

"And yet here we are," Wolfram gestured around them. Abby shrugged and raised her eyebrows as if to say 'what can you do?'

"It's true I took Yuri to my bed, but perhaps it would be more factually accurate to say he took me to his." Abby smiled as Wolfram grimaced. "Ironically, it was the same bed you had shared with Yuri for four years; although I can say with certainty that my experiences in that bed where vastly different from your own. Oh, and just between you and me, Yuri did not refuse my advances."

"That is a low blow for a Lady who presumes to be Queen." Wolfram said fighting to keep his voice even.

"Is it?" Abby arched an eyebrow, obviously enjoying Wolfram's discomfort. "You seem to need reminding of your place."

"My place?" Wolfram repeated with a snarl.

"Yes, a reminder that your place is no longer at Yuri's side. That is my right now and I don't like you coming back here to stir up trouble." Abby's voice turned hard and Wolfram scowled. "I asked you what your intentions where."

"And I answered your question."

"No, you didn't." Abby raised her chin and glared at Wolfram. "Your refusal to answer can only mean you are here to try and steal Yuri back from me."

"No one can be stolen unless they want to be." Words that his mother once said to him suddenly popped into Wolfram's head.

"Is that what you told yourself when you found out about my engagement to Yuri?" Abby sneered, "How pathetic."

"If you and Yuri are so much in love then what exactly are you so worried about?" Wolfram asked in disdain. "If you are really meant to be then my presence here shouldn't concern you so greatly."

"I am not that concerned." Abby laughed.

"No, you are." Suddenly it was all crystal clear to Wolfram. "You're terrified that I'm here to steal Yuri away from you which means you must also believe that it's a real possibility. That's why you're speaking to me now. You want to scare me off because I present the only real threat to your wedding and happily-ever-after."

"You drown Yuri in guilt!" Abby snapped her blue eyes flashing as her calm demeanour vanished. "Whenever you're around Yuri frets and wrings his hands over his guilt for leaving you. He can't think of anything but you when you're here so yes, you present a threat to me but not because I fear Yuri will leave me for you. He will marry me tomorrow. But I can't be entirely his while you twist the knife of guilt into his heart." Abby turned away from the window and marched up to Wolfram. "Why don't you just go back where you came from and take your boy toy with you?"

"Boy toy?" Wolfram repeated in confusion before comprehension dawned. "You mean Casper?"

"Your violet eyed country bumpkin, yes." Abby nodded.

"I'm not in a relationship with Casper." Wolfram said coolly, "not that it's any of your business."

"Oh please," Abby rolled her eyes and stepped back. "You disappear for months only to return days after Yuri's engagement to me with your boy in tow. You then turn around and leave home after a couple of days taking the pretty boy with you."

"I don't need to explain myself to you." Wolfram answered shortly.

"You also don't need to come to my wedding flaunting your new beau for everyone to see." Abby replied tartly.

"Why do you care about Casper?" Wolfram exclaimed in exasperation.

"I can honestly say I don't give a damn about him one way or the other." Abby answered and Wolfram had feeling that was the most truthful she'd been since they started this conversation. "I just can't fathom how you intend to play the injured and slighted party while hanging off your pretty little toy."

"I'm not playing at anything nor hanging off Casper. I'm not here to disrupt the wedding." Wolfram said coolly.

"I don't believe you." Abby stated.

"And I really don't give a fuck what you believe." Wolfram replied flatly.

"How could anyone perceive your presence here at my wedding as anything but a provocation? You are Yuri's ex-fiancé and you have no place at his wedding."

"I am the heir to the Bielefeld title," Wolfram said quietly. "One day I will be the Lord and take over my Uncle's estate and his place with the ten nobles. It would serve you well to remember that."

"Is that a threat, Lord Bielefeld?" Abby asked her voice quiet and dangerous.

"No, it's a promise." Wolfram answered.

"Then let me make you a promise in exchange." Abby replied. "If you do anything, anything, to try and take Yuri away from me and our child, I will make you regret it for the rest of your days." Abby's voice was soft but her words carried a conviction that scared Wolfram. At that moment he didn't doubt her words. Wolfram drew breath to respond.

"Abby my dear there you are!" Stuffel boomed as he bounced around the corner taking Wolfram by surprise. Abby turned to Stuffel with a smile.

"Uncle Stuffel, how are you?" Abby sounded perfectly normal as if she hadn't just threatened someone to their face. Wolfram on the other hand was having difficulty regaining control of his racing heart.

"I am wonderful my dear wonderful! And how are you this fine afternoon?" Stuffel ignored Wolfram as he grabbed Abby's hands in his own and peered at her face in concern. "You hardly leave your room these days."

"I am just feeling a little tired Uncle it is nothing to concern yourself over. Gisela is taking good care of us both." Abby winked and Stuffel chuckled. Wolfram was surprised to learn that Stuffel knew that Abby was pregnant. Then he remembered that Stuffel had always been fond of Abby. Stuffel had been looking for a way to manipulate Yuri since he became Maoh four years ago, and Abby presented a way for Stuffel to get closer to Yuri and meddle in the affairs of the Crown.

"Hello Uncle," Wolfram said loudly with a scowl.

"Wolfram my boy, how are you?" Stuffel spun around and threw his arms around Wolfram before he had time to dodge. Wolfram stood rigid in his Uncle's embrace and didn't return the affection. "You are looking much better nephew! But you're still a little pale, maybe you need to spend some time outside?" Stuffel released Wolfram and rubbed his beard.

"I have spent plenty of time outdoors Uncle." Wolfram only just refrained from saying that it was the present company that had turned him pale.

"Of course you have, you've always liked being out and about haven't you?" Stuffel laughed loudly. As suddenly as if a switch had been thrown, Stuffel stopped laughing and his face turned serious. "There aren't any hard feelings are there, Wolfram? You know, about the marriage and all."

"Why would there be?" Wolfram asked icily. Abby gave him a cold look from over Stuffel's shoulder. Her threat repeated itself in Wolfram's head and he curled his hands into fists.

"Now Wolfram don't be like that." Stuffel chided as if Wolfram was a child having a temper tantrum because a younger sibling had stolen his favourite toy. "Even you have to admit the circumstances surrounding your disappearance were pretty dire. We had no way of knowing you were alive." Wolfram felt the muscles in his jaw flex as he gritted his teeth to stop himself from shouting 'you could have looked a bit harder'.

"I know what happened Uncle, I was there." Wolfram answered coolly.

"Yes of course you were," Stuffel actually looked a bit uncomfortable. "I just wanted to say that these things happen and there's nothing one can do but go with the flow, so to speak." Wolfram arched an eyebrow and didn't attempt to dignify that statement with a response.

"I know what you are trying to say Uncle." Abby stepped forward and laid a hand on Stuffel's shoulder. She turned her gaze to Wolfram and while her voice was soft, her eyes were as hard as diamonds. "Be assured that I will take excellent care of Yuri, Lord Bielefeld. I shall never do anything to dishonour him. We are, after all, about to start a family together."

"And I would never do anything to break up a family." Wolfram replied with a feeling of satisfaction as Abby's face flushed.

"Um, yes, well," Stuffel coughed. Clearly even he had noticed the frosty atmosphere between Wolfram and Abby. The point scoring match between Wolfram and Abby was brought to a halt however, by the arrival of none other than Lady Flynn and Elizabeth, Raven's niece. The two women were deep in conversation as they rounded the same corner Stuffel had appeared from. Flynn looked up first and saw the small party in front of them. Her green eyes lit up when she saw Wolfram.

"Wolfram!" Flynn rushed forward in a swirl of pale blue hair and purple fabric and embraced Wolfram. Unlike with his Uncle, Wolfram accepted Flynn's hug and returned it with equal affection. Since she was no longer a potential threat to his engagement to Yuri he found it easier to relax.

"Hello Lady Flynn," Wolfram smiled as Flynn pulled back.

"I'd heard that you'd returned home but I didn't really believe it until now." Flynn admitted a little tearfully. "I'm so happy to see you safe."

"Thank you," Wolfram nodded. He turned to Elizabeth who looked as beautiful as he remembered in her white uniform. She smiled and stepped forward for a hug of her own, her violet eyes sparkling.

"It's good to see you safe, Wolfram." Elizabeth squeezed him tight before stepping away. "I see you've met the trollop who shouldered her way into your rightful place."

"How dare you –!" Abby exploded her face turning red.

"Now ladies please," Stuffel held up his hands to try and placate Abby's anger and Elizabeth's cold disdain. Wolfram had to press his lips together to stop himself from laughing.

"Elizabeth," Flynn shook her head at the mazoku but her eyes were smiling. "There is no need to be rude."

"There isn't?" Elizabeth asked in mock confusion. Flynn's lips twitched again and Abby looked ready to explode.

"Why don't we take a walk and catch up?" Wolfram suggested diplomatically. One all out row in the corridor was enough for him for one day. "I haven't seen either of you in ages."

"That's an excellent idea," Flynn said before Elizabeth could say anything.

"Yes we should go, there's an unpleasant smell around here." Elizabeth wafted her hand under her nose. Wolfram had to bite his cheek not to laugh at the look of total fury on Abby's face. Obviously Elizabeth had found a way to get under the other girl's skin and wind her up. Flynn took his left arm and Elizabeth his right, and between them they propelled him up the corridor.

"Yuri sent me a letter when he returned to Shinmakoku without you." Flynn said suddenly. Wolfram felt his heart skip and he swallowed hard. Suddenly the mood was very sombre. "He begged for my help in searching for you as it was too dangerous for soldiers from Shinmakoku to travel to Big Shimaron. He couldn't risk anyone else's life trying to find you but he couldn't do nothing either." Flynn sighed sadly and looked down at her feet. "I sent my best trackers to find you but they returned empty handed. I feared you dead."

"The bandits were very well hidden, Flynn. They were also a closely knit group who made sure no one knew their location. Your trackers didn't stand a chance of finding me." Wolfram looked at Flynn but she wouldn't meet his eyes.

"I failed you Wolfram and for that I beg your forgiveness. I understand if you feel you can't grant me that forgiveness and I ask out of a selfish desire to sleep better at night. My guilt is my burden to bear." Flynn looked close to tears so Wolfram stopped and turned to face her. Elizabeth also stopped but said nothing as Wolfram took Flynn's face in his hands.

"Flynn, you didn't fail me. I don't blame you for anything that happened."

"But you lost so much because I couldn't find you and return you to your loved ones." Flynn said with a sniff. Wolfram couldn't bear seeing her so sad. Flynn's tears reminded him of Greta's when she confessed her worries that they were no longer a family.

"Don't cry, Flynn. I am back with my loved ones once again. I'm strong enough to move past this and I know you are too." Wolfram said gently but firmly. Flynn looked surprised then she smiled and hugged Wolfram again.

"Lizzy said that you would say that." Flynn hiccupped against Wolfram's shoulder.

"Who is Lizzy?" Wolfram asked thinking Flynn had a new maid.

"Oh, sorry, that is what I call Elizabeth." Flynn turned pink and glanced at a smug looking Elizabeth from under her eyelashes.

"Oh, right, I see," Wolfram blinked his head reeling. Flynn and Elizabeth? When did that happen?

"I was worried sick about you when you vanished. I never believed you were dead by the way. Uncle had to almost lock me in my house to prevent me from looking for you." Elizabeth noted. Wolfram smiled at the analogy as he could easily see Elizabeth doing just that. Her blood ran as hot as his did. "I'm disgusted at His Majesty's behaviour though," Elizabeth snorted. Wolfram glanced at her in surprise. "He just couldn't keep it in his pants could he?"

"Lizzy, really," Flynn gasped in shock.

"You know I'm right Flynn," Elizabeth said with the air of someone who'd had this argument before. "His four year-long engagement had only been annulled for a couple of weeks before he was sleeping with any woman who battered her pretty blue eyes at him."

"I don't think it happened quite like that…" Flynn pursed her lips and trailed off as Elizabeth gave her the 'are you kidding me' look.

"It doesn't matter Elizabeth," Wolfram said quietly but that only seemed to annoy Elizabeth more.

"Aren't you angry with him? He insulted you!"

"I was dead," Wolfram said flatly. "The dead don't feel insulted."

"But the living has a duty to honour and respect the dead. That's what makes us different from the animals." Elizabeth's long blond hair was almost standing on end as she placed her hands on her hips.

"Lizzy, I don't think Wolfram wants to talk about that right now." Flynn said gently, moving around behind Wolfram to place a hand on Elizabeth's shoulder. "How about we drop the subject?"

"Am I the only one who thinks His not-so-majestic Majesty's behaviour is intolerable?" Elizabeth was practically spitting fire.

"What would you have me do, Elizabeth?" Wolfram spread his hands. "My engagement to Yuri was annulled by the Nobles before he even met Abby."

"But you loved him for years and he gets engaged again the second you're out of the picture." Elizabeth had stopped shouting but the empathic pain in her eyes was just as loud. "I can't understand his reasons, especially considering our past history fighting over you."

"Abby is pregnant." The words were out before Wolfram could stop them. Flynn and Elizabeth stared at him in speechless shock. Wolfram had a feeling that Conrad would not be happy with him for spilling the big secret.

"He got her pregnant?" Elizabeth spluttered once she found her voice.

"Apparently," Wolfram shrugged. "We might never know for certain if the child is Yuri's but he seems convinced enough to marry her."

"That explains a lot." Flynn flicked a strand of pale blue hair out of her eyes. "I wondered why they were getting married so fast. Do you know how far along she is?" The question was directed at Wolfram but he shook his head.

"So he's marrying her because she's pregnant," Elizabeth made a face. "I can understand his actions better now. Being born a bastard carries a heavy burden and stigma. But I still can't forgive him for what he did to you."

"You've always been passionate. But you need to let it go Elizabeth." Wolfram said quietly. "Hating Yuri forever won't solve anything. I don't want that for you." Wolfram gave Flynn a pointed look and she flushed pink. Elizabeth was quiet for a moment as she looked at Flynn. Flynn smiled and reached out to twine their fingers together.

"You're right," Elizabeth responded softly taking Wolfram by surprise. "I apologise for bringing the subject up and for any pain I inflicted on you by doing so." Elizabeth stepped forward and kissed Wolfram gently on the cheek. Wolfram felt his face colour as Flynn giggled.

"You should also try to be nicer to Abby." Flynn suggested.

"You are asking the impossible, Flynn." Elizabeth stated. Flynn laughed and Wolfram chuckled as well. The sight of Elizabeth and Flynn smiling at each other made his heart warm. For the first time since he'd returned to Shinmakoku three months ago, he could see something good that had grown out of the pain.

"So Wolfram," Flynn looked sly and Wolfram had a bad feeling, "What's this I hear about a certain handsome and strapping young man who has become your shadow of late?"

"Oh?" Elizabeth grinned, looking positively evil and Wolfram's heart sank. "Who might that be?"

"His name is Casper Falken," Flynn added before Wolfram could say anything. "He is quite the looker if the rumours are to be believed. And I hear he hasn't left Wolfram's side since he rescued him in Big Shimaron." Elizabeth's grin broadened.

"He's my friend and there's nothing more to be said." Wolfram did not like the way the two women before him were grinning. Wolfram started walking but he didn't get far before he was pounced on by Flynn on his left and Elizabeth on his right.

"You're a terrible liar Wolfram Von Bielefeld." Elizabeth stated. "Now start at the beginning and tell us everything."

:-:

(Next Day)

Wolfram had never seen so many people in Shinou's temple before. The whole place was packed to bursting with honoured guests and dignitaries in every colour and cut of cloth imaginable. There was an almost electric atmosphere as people turned to their neighbours to gossip and speculate on the day's events. The temple guards were dressed in their formal ceremonial uniforms and lined the aisle holding long spears looking fierce. Usually men weren't permitted in the temple but an exception was made for special occasions like the wedding of the current Maoh. There were no decorations in the temple however, as many believed it would affect the dignified and formal atmosphere. As Wolfram looked around the assembled crowd he felt that if the temple wanted to maintain its dignity the wedding shouldn't have been allowed to take place here. The clamour of voices echoing off the walls was making his ears ring.

In the front row on the left sat Gwendal, Conrad and Cecile. Wolfram could have sat there as well being the son of the former Maoh but he had declined. Instead he sat behind his mother with his Uncle and the other members of the Noble families. Directly on Wolfram's left was his Uncle followed by Gunter and Lord Del Kierson Von Wincott. Behind Kierson sat his son Lindsey and next to him was his grandfather Odile Von Wincott. On Odile's right was Lady Flynn Gilbert, next to her was Hube and beside him was his wife Nicola with their little boy, El, on her lap. On the right hand side on the front row was Stuffel, Densham von Karbelnikoff, Saralegi and Hyscliff. In the second row sat Lady Rochefort, Lord Gyllenhall, Lord Radford, Anissina and Raven. Elizabeth sat behind her uncle and had been trying to catch his eye all morning. Wolfram had been studiously ignoring her however.

Wolfram adjusted the collar of his stiff formal uniform and flicked some dust off his sleeve. The bride and groom would be making their appearance any minute now. As normal the guests had gathered in the temple before the couple arrived. Most had arrived by carriage but some of them, including Wolfram, would be taking part in the parade through Town after the ceremony so they had arrived on horseback. Only Yuri and Abby would travel through the Town in a carriage followed by an escort comprised of the Ten Nobles, the former Maoh and her family, and the family of the couple. Since Abby's family had decided not to put in an appearance the escort wasn't going to be as impressive as usual.

Wolfram glanced around the temple; it looked like Yuri's family weren't going to attend. Wolfram frowned in confusion, he was sure Jennifer at least would be here. Abby's family he could understand, Conrad had told him that Abby and her mother had had a fight where Abby essentially forbid her family from attending. It looked like the escort wasn't going to include any blood relatives of the couple. Wolfram couldn't help but wonder what kind of message that would send to the people. The parade was always seen as the family of the couple officially blessing the union.

"We are going to start soon right?" A voice grumbled quietly on Wolfram's right. Wolfram turned to smile at Casper who looked stiff and uncomfortable in such ostentatious surroundings. He was wearing a pair of tight pale grey trousers with black boots, a pressed white shirt, a purple waistcoat with a floral pattern in sapphire blue, and a pale grey fitted jacket with sliver buttons. The waistcoat was the same colour as his eyes and the grey jacket brought out his colouring. If Wolfram didn't know better he would have sworn that Casper was a Noble born who attended Royal occasions on a daily basis.

"We should get underway soon but the ceremony itself could last a while."

"Oh great," Casper sighed.

"What's wrong?" Wolfram struggled not to laugh at the put out expression on Casper's face.

"I'm starving," Casper whispered and Wolfram couldn't stop himself snorting. "Why couldn't we have any breakfast?"

"It is mazoku tradition to fast until lunch where we eat and drink far too much in celebration of the wedding." Wolfram answered with a smile. "The more important the couple the bigger the lunch served. Trust me; you'll be glad you didn't eat anything for breakfast. I believe there are five courses."

"It's only just gone eight in the morning!" Casper gasped with a look of horror. "We don't get to eat until twelve?"

"Didn't you ever skip meals at your father's stud?" Wolfram sat back and crossed one leg over the other.

"My mother was a strong believer in eating healthy and never skipping meals." Casper answered after a short pause. "She used to say that if we couldn't find time to eat then we were doing something wrong. After she passed away my father continued the tradition. Anyone who skipped a meal without a good reason got a strong dressing down."

"Ah," Wolfram felt uncomfortable bringing up Casper's deceased mother. He could tell it was still an upsetting subject for Casper. "Don't worry Casper time will fly by and you'll be faced with more food than you could possibly consume soon enough." Wolfram ran his eyes over Casper's ensemble once again. "You look great by the way. I thought you were going to wear the same thing you were wearing yesterday."

"Changing the subject, nice," Casper grinned. "I was surprised the waistcoat fit actually." Casper ran a hand down his chest. "I haven't worn it in about ten years." A cough interrupted anything else Casper might have said. Wolfram turned to his left to see his Uncle glaring at them both. Wolfram had deliberately put himself between his Uncle and Casper to act as a buffer. Casper grinned self-consciously and turned to his front while Wolfram rolled his eyes. Waltorana was still suspicious of Casper's intentions despite Wolfram's attempts to convince him that nothing was going on between them.

A sudden fanfare brought Wolfram out of his memories and into the present with a jump. Wolfram sat up straight and the conversations around him stopped short. Another fanfare sounded and Wolfram rose to his feet with the rest of the guests. He turned to look over his shoulder and smiled at the sight of Greta in her pink flower girl dress. Next to her was Beatrice who looked just as pretty in a matching dress. It had been Greta's idea to make her a flower girl and Yuri had thought it would be good for human-mazoku relationships.

The two girls walked down the aisle side-by-side scattering pink flower petals from a wicker basket to symbolize beauty and purity. Greta had an expression of deep concentration on her face as she scattered the petals, but she glanced up as she passed Wolfram and gave him a quick grin. Wolfram winked and her cheeks went pink with pleasure. Once Beatrice and Greta reached the end of the aisle they split with Greta going left and Beatrice right. Beatrice joined her father while Greta stood next to Cecile. Another fanfare sounded and Ulrike appeared in her temple maiden robes followed by Murata dressed in formal black robes of a similar design. The two walked down the aisle together until they reached the altar where they stopped and turned to face the crowd. Murata's face was unreadable and his glasses reflected the candlelight turning the lenses into pools of molten gold. Wolfram found himself wondering if Murata practised the move in the dead of night to make sure the candles were positioned just right to get the desired effect. Ulrike was smiling serenely with her hands clasped in front of her.

Wolfram tensed and felt his heart tighten in his chest. This was it; the next fanfare would be for Yuri and Abby to start walking down the aisle. Wolfram felt like he was going to be sick. He hadn't realised just how nervous he was until now. It felt like he had great big snakes in his guts wriggling around. He started to sweat and suddenly there wasn't enough air in the room. Everything started spinning and for one horrific second Wolfram thought he was going to humiliate himself by fainting in front of all these people. Suddenly there was a hand clasping his. Warm rough fingers gently squeezed his hand and the room stopped spinning. Wolfram found he could breathe after all and the sick feeling passed. Wolfram breathed out slow and glanced to his right from under his eyelashes. Casper made no indication that he'd noticed Wolfram looking at him, but his hand gave Wolfram's another squeeze. As the fanfare sounded and a murmur swept through the temple like a great sigh, Wolfram curled his fingers with Casper's and held on tight. He looked up and saw Murata watching him with his lips twitching in a smirk. It was as if Murata knew exactly what had transpired but he couldn't possibly see him and Casper holding hands. Pushing that thought aside, Wolfram allowed himself a glance over his shoulder.

Wolfram couldn't help but stare. Yuri looked like he'd aged about ten years overnight. The all black uniform he wore was similar to his usual black ensemble, except that the jacket he wore had elegant silver stitching on the collar and cuffs to depict flowers. The pattern was beautiful and seemed to change shape before Wolfram's eyes. He knew it was an optical illusion but he couldn't help but be impressed. Yuri also wore a red jewel on his left shoulder with a full length purple cloak stretched out behind him. The left edge of the cloak was attached to the jewel while the right side was attached to a silver rope which passed under Yuri's armpit and across his chest to attach to the jewel. Abby looked dazzling in a white and ivory dress with gemstones and cut glass stitched into the bodice. Her hair was twisted up into complicated looking knots with purple ribbons the same colour as Yuri's cloak woven in the strands.

Wolfram had never seen Yuri look so handsome and King-like before. He felt a sharp pain of regret stab him in the heart at the thought of what could have been. It could have been him walking beside Yuri. It should have been him. An almost painful squeeze of his hand by Casper jolted Wolfram from his thoughts. Wolfram turned his face away. Could have, would have, and should have. What was done was done and there was no going back. Wolfram took a deep breath and gave Casper's hand a squeeze. Casper's grip loosened slightly and the tension in his face softened. As Yuri and Abby walked past them, Wolfram resolved himself to say goodbye to the 'could have's' once and for all.

-:-

Yuri was amazed he hadn't been sick. He had a feeling the lack of any breakfast might be partly responsible for this happy occurrence, and he thanked mazoku tradition for dictating that no one ate until lunch. As he walked up the aisle with Abby beside him, his legs felt like rubber and his knees were shaking. He was sweating despite the cool interior of the temple and could only hope that the sweat patches wouldn't show up on black. He swallowed hard as he and Abby stopped in front of Ulrike and Murata before the altar. Both of them looked very stately in their formal robes, although Murata's blank expression made Yuri nervous. It was almost as if Murata knew Yuri wanted nothing more than to run out of the temple and leap into the nearest body of water to transport himself back to Earth as fast as possible. Yuri's heart skipped a beat leaving him breathless as he and Abby turned to face each other. This was it, no backing out now. Yuri drew a deep breath in. He hadn't slept a wink all night but he was too wound up to be tired. Yuri glanced around the temple as the guests took their seats and his gaze met Wolfram's.

If Yuri felt ill before, it was nothing compared to how he felt looking at Wolfram sitting between Waltorana and Casper. Wolfram's eyes were cool and distant as they regarded him with apparent disinterest. Wolfram was very handsome in his fancy blue uniform with gold piping. Their gazes locked and held for what felt like a lifetime before Wolfram scowled and pointedly looked away. As Yuri turned away he saw Casper's pretty purple eyes cut towards Wolfram in concern before giving him a hard look. What's with that look? Yuri thought privately. He was so busy thinking about Wolfram and Casper he didn't see the flash of irritation in Abby's eyes when she noticed who he was looking at.

"Welcome everyone to Shinou's temple where we have gathered to bless the marriage of His Majesty Yuri Shibuya to Abby Caz." Ulrike spoke softly but her voice carried to the back of the temple. Everyone sat up a little straighter and leaned forward eagerly. "Love is a beautiful but rare thing to find. It is the rarity of true love that makes it so precious to us all. We all search for love to give us meaning in life, to find that one person we will spend forever with, and the person we have no secrets from. That is what marriage means; a promise between two people of everlasting love, devotion and trust." Several people applauded making Ulrike smile.

Yuri glanced at Ulrike wondering if she had written this speech in a deliberate attempt to make him feel even worse than he did. She looked perfectly innocent but Yuri knew there was more to the shrine maiden than met the eye. And he wouldn't have put it past Murata to have written this speech and told Ulrike to read it knowing full well the effect it would have.

"Our first King, Shinou, believed that love and marriage are sacred institutions that must be respected by all." Ulrike continued. "All of you here today bear witness to this ceremony and you take with you the truth of this union. As His Majesty takes Abby Caz to be his wife you also take her to be your Queen. As His Majesty says his vows you also say yours. This marriage is to be recognised across all countries and by all persons as binding and true." No escape then, Yuri thought with a touch of the melodramatic. At least he could escape back to Earth, theoretically. "I ask that you give His Majesty and Abby Caz your full support for today and throughout the rest of their lives, as they begin their new life together."

Yuri thought briefly of the people he once considered his friends who hadn't shown him any support at all. Shocked at the bitterness of his thoughts, Yuri berated himself silently. He was the one who put himself in this situation and he couldn't blame anyone else for it. As Ulrike continued to speak Yuri looked at Abby and she smiled at him. He could have refused her when she came to the castle three months ago claiming to be pregnant with his child. He could have said that the likelihood of a pregnancy occurring after just one night was highly unlikely and therefore refused to accept the child as his. What proof was there that the child was his? It's not like genetic testing was available in this world. There was a possibility, however remote, that the child she carried wasn't his and therefore not his problem. He could well be marrying someone he didn't love for the sake of a child that wasn't his.

But what if it is your child inside Abby? Don't you have a responsibility to protect and love the life you helped create? The voice in Yuri's head sounded disturbingly like his mother. Don't forget that Gisela confirmed that Abby was four weeks pregnant when she came back to the castle. The timing matched perfectly. Yuri's gaze dropped to Abby's midsection where her unborn child grew. He couldn't risk it. And even if the baby wasn't his after all, the child was innocent. They deserved a happy life free from discrimination over something they had no control over. If Yuri could protect this child and provide for them, then he would do so. Marrying Abby was a small price to pay for another's happiness.

"Now the Great Sage would like to say a few words before we begin the ceremony." Ulrike said bringing Yuri out of his thoughts. He hadn't heard a word she'd said. He blinked and made himself concentrate. He had words to say soon.

"Thank you Ulrike," Murata smiled at Ulrike as he took her place before altar. "Welcome everyone and thank you for coming today. As I'm sure you're all aware, it was the most unfortunate of circumstances that led us to where we are now." There was a pause as Murata let this sink in. Yuri felt Abby tense and saw her gaze flick to Wolfram. "Wolfram Von Bielefeld went missing and was presumed lost to us. After twenty days with no word his engagement to His Majesty was annulled by unanimous agreement by the Ten Noble families. It was some weeks after this event when His Majesty met Miss Caz and proposed marriage to her. Furthermore, Lord Bielefeld did not return to Shinmakoku, due to injuries suffered while he was held prisoner, until after His Majesty's engagement to Miss Caz was officially announced." Murata paused but the silence in the temple was so thick it could have been cut with a knife. "As such, His Majesty's engagement to Miss Caz took precedence over His Majesty's former engagement to Lord Bielefeld. I hope that answers any questions you may have regarding this wedding and dispels any doubts you may feel regarding the validity of this marriage. I have spoken to Shinou and he has given this wedding his blessing." Murata nodded towards Yuri and Abby with a smile. "He also wishes to bless any relationship Lord Bielefeld may see fit to pursue in the future."

Yuri couldn't stop himself from glancing at Wolfram and Casper. Wolfram had gone pink and his back was ramrod straight while his shoulders were stiff. Casper by comparison, looked completely unfazed as if having the Great Sage hint at a relationship between him and Wolfram while receiving Royal blessings from the ghost of the First King was an everyday occurrence. Yuri realised that everyone was looking at him looking at Wolfram. His cheeks turned hot and Yuri redirected his gaze back to Abby. Abby looked as happy as Wolfram did. Was it Murata's plan to annoy the four main parties in this mess? If so was he was doing a splendid job.

"As I said; I hope that clears up any confusion or misgivings you may have harboured towards this marriage." Murata sounded cheerful so Yuri was forced to draw the conclusion that Murata was indeed trying to annoy them. "I will now hand over the proceedings back to Ulrike." Murata stepped back and Ulrike stepped forwards to take her original place.

"Thank you Great Sage," Ulrike smiled as Murata took his place on her left. "Now we shall continue with the ceremony. I now ask His Majesty and Abby Caz to join hands." Ulrike waited while Abby and Yuri did just that. Yuri was surprised at how cold Abby's hands felt in his. "Please speak your vows, Your Majesty." Yuri licked his lips and took a deep breath. He'd spent hours memorizing his vows. According to tradition they had to be spoken without hesitation, deviation or repetition.

"I, Yuri Shibuya, take you, Abby Caz, to be no other than yourself. Loving what I know of you, trusting what I do not yet know, I will respect your integrity and have faith in your abiding love for me," Yuri's breath hitched causing him to stumble. He licked his lips and forced himself to continue, "Through all our years, and in all that life may bring us." He could feel everyone's eyes on him making him feel like he was on trial. "Abby, I take you as my wife, with your faults and your strengths, as I offer myself to you with my faults and my strengths. I will help you when you need help, and turn to you when I need help. I chose you as the person with whom I will spend my life." The enormity of what he'd just said made Yuri halt again. "I promise you these things: I will be faithful to you and honest with you; I will respect, trust, help, and care for you; I will share my life with you; through the best and worst of what is to come, and as long as we live."

"Thank you for speaking your vows, Your Majesty." Ulrike replied as required. She reached forward and picked up a red ribbon neatly folded on the altar. Ulrike wrapped the ribbon loosely around Yuri and Abby's left arms, starting at Yuri's wrist and ending at Abby's. "Abby Caz, please speak your vows."

"I, Abby Caz, take you, Yuri Shibuya, to be no other than yourself. Loving what I know of you, trusting what I do not yet know, I will respect your integrity and have faith in your abiding love for me, through all our years, and in all that life may bring us." Abby spoke softly but her voice seemed to fill the whole temple until it resonated with her conviction. "Yuri, I take you as my husband, with your faults and your strengths, as I offer myself to you with my faults and my strengths. I will help you when you need help, and turn to you when I need help. I chose you as the person with whom I will spend my life. I promise you these things: I will be faithful to you and honest with you; I will respect, trust, help, and care for you; I will share my life with you; through the best and worst of what is to come, and as long as we live." Abby said her vows without a single stumble. Her blue eyes were lit up as if from an inner light and her beauty almost made Yuri cry. Abby spoke from her heart whereas he'd forced the words out of his throat. Abby didn't deserve a love so weak.

"Thank you for speaking your vows, Abby Caz." Ulrike said before Yuri could scream that this was all a huge mistake. She wrapped the second red ribbon around Yuri and Abby's right arms. "Both have spoken their vows and in doing so woven their future together. The ribbons represent the binding of their fate. Great Sage, please bring forth the marriage gifts." Marriage gifts in mazoku tradition could be anything from jewellery to furniture. Generally whatever form the gift took was presented as a matching pair. Yuri had decided to go for something typical of an Earth wedding.

Yuri turned to look at Murata as he produced two black jewellery boxes from seemingly thin air and presented them to Ulrike. Yuri could practically feel the guests leaning forward to try and get the first glance at the contents. Ulrike opened the first box and smiled. She reached inside and drew out a gold ring. A murmur rippled through the crowd as the ring caught the candlelight and shone brightly like a star.

The ring was made from a flat band of gold with a brilliant blue sapphire on the right and a black opal on the left. The sapphire appeared to glow with an inner light while the black opal reflected all the colours of the rainbow across its surface. Abby had chosen the gemstones to match their eyes and Yuri had to admit the ring was beautiful. He'd had no idea that black opals were so beautiful or so rare. Yuri had always thought that coloured stones were preferred but these black gems were made all the more popular by their rarity.

"Abby Caz, please give me the fourth finger of your left hand." Ulrike asked holding the ring up. Abby offered her hand and Ulrike slipped the ring on in one smooth motion. The goldsmith had fitted the rings perfectly. "Majesty, please give me the fourth finger of your left hand." Ulrike turned to Yuri as she opened the second box to show an almost identical ring. Abby's band was a little slimmer and more feminine but the gems were the same size. Yuri offered his finger as requested and Ulrike slipped the ring on. He knew wearing the rings on the ring finger was only symbolic in Earth tradition but it seemed appropriate.

"By the power vested in me," Ulrike continued, "I now pronounce His Majesty Yuri Shibuya and Lady Abby Caz to be married. May they love, trust, and support each other for the natural duration of their lives." The applause echoed as Ulrike tugged on the ends of the ribbons causing them to unravel in one smooth motion. As Yuri and Abby turned to face their guests, Yuri held Abby's left hand in his so everyone could see the matching rings. Unlike Earth traditions the couple did not kiss to seal the wedding for which Yuri was very grateful. The thought of kissing Abby in front of everyone, not to mention Wolfram, made his heart rate double. The guests stood up as Yuri and Abby walked back down the aisle. Abby was smiling and nodding to everyone but Yuri kept his gaze fixed straight ahead. He didn't want to look at Wolfram. He didn't want to know what expression Wolfram was wearing.

-:-

Wolfram was desperately trying to keep it together. Hearing Yuri say his marriage vows had affected him more than he'd anticipated. If it wasn't for Casper's hand clutching his tight he would have leapt out of his chair and walked out of the Tomb the second Yuri said "I stand here today". Watching the events unfold before him made everything so real. Yuri was married. What shocked Wolfram the most was the hidden dark place in his heart where he'd been holding onto the hope that this day wouldn't come. Despite everything he'd actually been hoping and wishing for something to happen that would prevent this marriage from taking place. Maybe Yuri would see sense and cancel the whole thing? Maybe Abby would abscond to some remote island far removed from civilisation?

Witnessing the marriage was a wake-up call for Wolfram. It was the final nail in the coffin of his dreams for a future with Yuri. Even if Yuri's marriage to Abby collapsed and they parted ways in the future, Wolfram knew with painful certainty that he could never return to Yuri's side. Not now, not after everything that had happened. The dynamic of their relationship had shifted on its axis and pushed them apart. The dream of marrying Yuri and building a life together was just that; a dream. It was time to wake up.

Wolfram stood up with the rest of the guests as Yuri and Abby started to walk slowly back down the aisle. His hands were sweaty and he was shaking as if he had a fever. Casper was rubbing circles with his thumb on the palm of his hand. Wolfram was grateful for Casper's support as he felt like he was falling apart. He breathed in deep through his nose and let it out slowly. He had to keep up appearances. He could fall apart later once there was no one around to see. Right now he had a celebration parade to attend.

As his mother followed behind the newly-wed couple she shot him a concerned look. Wolfram forced a smile and Cecile smiled gently back. Her gaze flicked down to Wolfram's white knuckle grip on Casper's hand and her gaze became sad. Wolfram untangled his fingers from Casper's so no one else would notice. His hand actually hurt from gripping Casper's so tight. Casper was on the aisle so he slipped out first but moved back to allow Wolfram and the Nobles to leave first. As Casper wasn't noble born or a relative of the couple he wasn't allowed to be a part of the parade. It annoyed Wolfram but he knew there was nothing to be done about it. Even Saralegi wasn't allowed to be a part of the parade and he was a King.

As he stepped into the sunshine Wolfram took in a deep breath. He still felt a mess and the bright warm weather only made him feel worse. But he was a soldier and this was a battle he couldn't afford to lose. Wolfram squared his shoulders and marched towards his horse. Out of the corner of his eye he saw an elaborate black carriage pulled by four jet-black horses decked out in purple livery pull up outside the temple. The horses wore plumes of purple feathers on their bridles and their coats were brushed to perfection. The carriage itself was open to the air to allow the population to see their Maoh and his new wife. As Wolfram swung himself into the saddle Conrad rode up beside him.

"Are you –?"

"Not now Conrad," Wolfram interrupted. He couldn't handle sympathy right now. He didn't want anyone to ask him if he was ok because he really wasn't. He couldn't put up a front if he had to verbalise how he felt. Ignoring his feelings was the only way he was going to get through today intact.

"His Majesty's carriage will lead the way with two guards in front, we shall follow behind mother and Gwendal with Greta and the Ten Nobles will follow behind us." Conrad said with an understanding smile.

"Understood," Wolfram answered watching the guests steam out of the temple to watch the parade depart. Wolfram saw Saralegi step up to the carriage and speak with Yuri and Abby. Yuri was nodding distractedly while Abby beamed like a small sun. The Nobles mounted their horses and there was a moment of chaos as they bulldozed through the crowds to get into position. Wolfram was about to follow when he caught Casper looking at him. Casper nodded and Wolfram nodded back. In that moment words passed silently between them and Wolfram found he actually felt a bit better.

Cecile looked splendid in her red gown sitting side saddle across a white mare. She smiled warmly at her sons as they moved into position. Wolfram managed a small smile back and it was worth it to see his mother's eyes light up. Greta nudged her gentle brown mare between Conrad and Wolfram and Wolfram glanced across at her.

"You look beautiful, Greta." Wolfram said softly. "And you did a wonderful job as the flower girl. I'm very proud of you."

"Thank you," Greta blushed pink at the praise. Wolfram was pleased to see her looking so happy and relaxed. He'd been worried about her ever since she left his Uncle's home but she seemed to have bounced back. Wolfram wondered if anyone had told her that Abby was pregnant but he doubted it somehow.

Finally the parade was ready and the guard leading the parade gave the signal to move out. Two guards led the way carrying a banner each with Yuri's official royal emblem. The carriage followed setting the pace to a brisk trot. Cecile and Gwendal followed behind the carriage, Conrad, Greta and Wolfram following them. The Nobles brought up the rear in three rows of three. As the parade left the temple the remaining guests made their way back to the castle. Many would take the opportunity to change clothes and check on their respective wedding gifts.

As the parade left Shinou's temple a small band was waiting for them just before the castle gates. The band started a brisk march several feet in front of the parade and started up a fanfare of festive music. The drums and deep brassy notes of various horns flowed down the winding path towards the town heralding the parade's arrival. Townsfolk had been up since dawn to line the streets to get a good view of the passing Royal parade. Royal weddings were a rare occurrence and everyone wanted to make sure they were a part of it.

Within minutes the parade was trotting smartly through the town while well-wishers cheered and waved from the pavement. People threw petals for good luck and to symbolise love as the Royal couple passed by. There were people hanging out of windows above the crowds throwing handfuls of petals down giving the impression that it was snowing. Abby was laughing and waving at everyone while Yuri sat stiffly and waved in a self-conscience manner. If the people were upset by the Maoh's apparent bashfulness they didn't show it. Children ran along the streets following the Royal carriage, cheering and shouting. Wolfram was aware of people pointing at him and whispering among themselves but he focused his gaze forward and refused to make eye contact. Let them think what they wanted to think.

He looked to his left and smiled at Greta. She appeared to be in her element and was riding beautifully. Flower petals had settled in her hair making it look like she wore a crown of flowers. Greta noticed him looking and turned to him with a smile. "This is so much fun!" Greta said happily. Her words hurt but Wolfram couldn't be angry with her. He'd been so worried about her recently he was glad to see a smile on her face. "Why do people keep pointing at you and talking?" Greta suddenly asked over the sound of the music and clatter of horses' hooves.

"They are wondering why I am attending the wedding of my former fiancé." Wolfram answered honestly.

"Oh," Greta's face fell as if she'd forgotten why they were there.

"Don't be sad Greta; this is a day to be happy and smiling." Wolfram nudged his horse closer so he could speak to Greta without shouting.

"You're not smiling," Greta pointed out. Wolfram felt his lips quirk upwards and he gave his adopted daughter a fond look.

"No I'm not, but that's because I'm saying goodbye."

"What do you mean? Are you going somewhere?" Greta's eyes went wide and her voice rose in pitch. "Are you leaving again?"

"Calm down Greta, you'll scare the horses." Wolfram said gently. "I'm not going anywhere for the moment. What I meant was that I'm saying goodbye to Yuri, or at least to what could have been."

"I don't understand," Greta admitted with a frown. At least she didn't look panicked anymore.

"Yuri is Abby's husband now, so any future we might have had together is gone." Wolfram answered, he could feel his heart clench as he spoke the words but he needed to face the truth. No more running. No more pretending. Wolfram glanced at Greta when she said nothing. Her face was sad and pensive and her hands clutched the reins tight.

"So…so we're not a family anymore?" Greta said so quietly Wolfram almost didn't hear her.

"I will always be a part of your family Greta." Wolfram said completely seriously. "Just like mother will always be your grandmother. The only thing that's changed is that Abby is Yuri's wife. She's a part of your family now."

"She's not my mother," Greta snapped looking thunderous.

"And she doesn't have to be. But she is Yuri's wife and by extension a part of the family. You need to accept that, just like I do." Wolfram smiled and the angry look faded from Greta's face to be replaced with sadness.

"Goodbyes suck," Greta stated. Wolfram reached out to squeeze Greta's shoulder.

"Yes they do."

Casper watched the parade trot away with his stomach churning with nerves. He knew that Wolfram was a powder keg of emotions about to erupt. He really hoped no one pushed any of his buttons as he doubted Wolfram had much self-restraint right now. Casper sighed and tugged at the stiff collar of his white shirt. He wasn't used to wearing such formal attire. "Don't worry about Wolfram; he's stronger than everyone gives him credit for." A female voice spoke on Casper's right. He looked up and saw a beautiful woman in a dark red dress with long blond hair standing next to him. She turned violet eyes to him and smiled warmly. "My name is Elizabeth, you must be Casper."

"Ah, yes Lady Elizabeth, Wolfram has mentioned your name to me." Casper bowed hurriedly making Elizabeth laugh.

"I'll bet he did." Elizabeth's eyes twinkled and Casper relaxed with a smile. Elizabeth glanced over her shoulder and Casper followed her gaze to see another beautiful woman, this one in pale blue with long blue hair, walking towards them. She moved to stand between Elizabeth and Casper and her green eyes regarded Casper with friendly curiosity. "Casper, this is Lady Flynn Gilbert, the ruler of Caloria." Elizabeth introduced them.

"Lady Gilbert, it is an honour and a privilege." Casper bowed again and took Flynn's hand to kiss it. She laughed and gave Casper a warm smile.

"The honour is mine Casper Falken. You saved the life of a dear friend of mine." Flynn looked sad for a moment before she shook herself. "But that is the past and today is the day to look to the future. How are you finding your stay at the castle?" Flynn linked her arm through Casper's and started walking back to the castle, following the other guests. Elizabeth claimed his other arm and Casper tried to ignore the trapped feeling their impromptu threesome gave him.

"I am greatly enjoying my time at the castle. I've certainly met a lot of new people during my brief time here. And to witness a Royal wedding is an experience indeed." Casper answered diplomatically.

"Even when the aforementioned wedding is a sham?" Elizabeth asked innocently.

"Lizzy! You said you would be polite." Flynn barked before Casper could do more than raise his eyebrows. "Please pay her words no regard, Casper." Flynn gave Elizabeth a hard look which was ignored. Casper could sense that Elizabeth was waiting for his answer despite Flynn's warning.

"Why would you think this marriage is a sham, Lady Elizabeth?" Casper asked instead. Elizabeth smirked at his response.

"This wedding only happened because Wolfram went missing and was presumed dead. His Majesty should never have married Abby."

"Did you not duel His Majesty over Wolfram a few years ago?" Casper asked, smiling when Elizabeth's cheeks went pink. Wolfram had recounted the details to him one evening.

"I did, but I also lost with grace. I accepted that Wolfram was in love with His Majesty, even though he was a total wimp and clearly not good enough for my Wolfram." Elizabeth huffed. Casper heard Flynn sigh heavily. "I thought His Majesty would repay Wolfram's devotion by marrying him. To run off with the nearest floozy a couple of weeks after the annulment of his engagement, was inexcusable."

"Is it not inexcusable to force someone into a loveless marriage?" Casper asked quietly. He felt Flynn's grip on his arm tighten. "From what I've heard, His Majesty never expressed a desire to marry Wolfram, in fact he proposed by mistake as he did not understand our customs, so is it not better for all that they were freed to choose someone they truly love?"

"You're right," Flynn answered after a short pause. "Finding someone you love is the most wonderful experience anyone can ask for." Flynn glanced at Elizabeth who smiled at her in a way that told Casper they were more than friends. "But Wolfram truly believed that Yuri could come to love him."

"I was with someone a long time ago whom I loved deeply." Casper said before he had time to second guess himself. "I believed he loved me in return, but when his former lover returned he left me without a second's hesitation. Unrequited love is a meaningless love."

"Is that why you're not in a relationship with Wolfram? Because you're worried your feelings are not returned in full?" Flynn asked gently. Casper felt his cheeks go warm and he glanced at Flynn.

"Wolfram and I are just friends."

"We jumped Wolfram yesterday after he arrived at the castle." Elizabeth grinned. "We know there's more to the story than: 'we're just friends'."

"Oh?" Casper's ears pricked despite himself. After the accidental kiss Casper wasn't sure where his and Wolfram's relationship was going, if there was even a relationship to go anywhere.

"Wolfram mentioned that you had been distancing yourself from him lately," Flynn continued. "Is that true?" Casper glanced around but the rest of the guests were out of ear shot and talking among themselves. Still he hesitated. He didn't know Flynn or Elizabeth and wasn't sure what he should tell them. Would everything he said be reported back to Wolfram's uncle? Or worse to Wolfram? "You don't have to answer of course but we will keep your confidence, Casper." Flynn added softly. Casper looked into Flynn's green eyes and made a decision. He was going around and around inside his head unable to make a decision, it was time to bring in a fresh perspective.

"As I mentioned earlier, I was with someone once who used me as a substitute as he couldn't be with the one he loved." Casper heard a sharp intake of breath from both women. "While I know Wolfram is different to him I can't help but see parallels in our situation, with Wolfram still being in love with His Majesty." Casper licked his lips. "I kissed him, Wolfram I mean, by accident. I could tell in the way he kissed me back that he was thinking about His Majesty. I can't and I won't go through that again."

"And you shouldn't," Flynn responded firmly. "But is it really fair for you to ask Wolfram to never think of Yuri? They were engaged for four years and Wolfram loved him deeply. A love like that might never go away." Flynn's words were gentle but Casper felt each one like a physical blow.

"Wolfram would never use you as a substitute or as some kind of consolation prize." Elizabeth spoke next. "But he won't make the first move either. You need to decide if you can share his heart."

"But how can I be in a relationship with someone if they are in love with another?" Casper shook his head. Jealousy curled in his belly like a serpent as he thought of Wolfram's dedication to Yuri despite everything that had happened.

"If you want a relationship with Wolfram then you'll need to learn to deal with this." Flynn answered. "Love is not a switch we can turn on and off, but loving one person does not mean we can't love someone else with all our heart. I still love my former husband even though he is no longer with us. Loving him and respecting the love we shared doesn't prevent me from finding love and comfort in the arms of another." Flynn glanced briefly at Elizabeth. "And Elizabeth is correct; Wolfram is waiting for you to decide what you want. Bear in mind that Wolfram has played the waiting game before and been hurt, he won't wait that long again."

"If you remain this indecisive Wolfram will become tired of waiting around and will leave. And if that happens, you'll lose your chance to be with him." Elizabeth added firmly.

"Did he say that to you?" Casper asked quietly. He felt about two inches tall right now. Everything Flynn and Elizabeth were saying was the painful truth that Casper didn't want to face. If he sat around and did nothing then nothing was exactly what would happen. Wolfram wouldn't wait forever.

"Not in so many words," Elizabeth replied. "Most of what we're saying is woman's intuition and reading between the lines." Elizabeth winked making Casper smile. "But," Elizabeth smirked, "Wolfram does have feelings for you. I can see it in the way he looks at you when you're not looking and the way he talks about you when you're not around."

"And we know you feel the same," Flynn added. "It's written all over your face whenever anyone mentions his name."

"It could all fall apart and end in disaster," Casper pointed out.

"That's the risk everyone takes in a relationship." Flynn laughed. "Whether you stay together or not is up to you two."

"There are a few people who've expressed… concerns…over my relationship with Wolfram." Casper didn't know why he was coming up with excuses not to pursue a relationship with Wolfram before it had even started.

"And…?" Elizabeth raised her eyebrows.

"I don't want to cause rifts between Wolfram and his family –"

"That's an excuse," Flynn cut in. "And it's a pretty poor one at that. Casper, being scared of starting a relationship with someone is normal, but if you keep coming up with reasons why you shouldn't be together then you won't ever be together. I want Wolfram to be happy and even though I don't know you yet, I want you to be happy too." Flynn stopped walking to face Casper who looked slightly stunned. "I've always been good at reading people and I believe you are a good person, Casper Falken. Not because you saved Wolfram's life without expectation of personal gain, but because you've stood by him. I saw you holding his hand through the wedding and I can see that being with you brings Wolfram some measure of comfort. You clearly care about him and you worry about him. I just don't want you to never know what could happen because you were too scared to try."

"His Majesty is no longer an option for Wolfram," Elizabeth added when Casper said nothing. "That doesn't make you second best or the contingency plan; it makes you all the more important to Wolfram."

"Thank you," Casper didn't know what else to say. Flynn and Elizabeth's words were rushing around his head and he needed time to think. Flynn appeared to recognise this as she smiled and gave his arm a squeeze.

"Let's head back to the castle, I'm starving!" Flynn announced as she started walking again making them all laugh. As Flynn and Elizabeth started teasing each other regarding Flynn's appetite, Casper felt a warm glow in his chest spread through his body. He had a feeling this was the start of a friendship that would last a lifetime.
