Disclaimer: I do not own KKM or any of its characters
I must be getting sentimental in my old age – I used to emotionally torture the characters in my stories but now I want them to be happy.
This is a shorter chapter than usual but I hope that's ok. It felt like a natural place to end since we'll be catching up with Wolfram and Casper in the next chapter.
I hope you enjoy!
Chapter twelve: It takes two
Yuri couldn't keep the smile off his face. He was outside, the sun was shining, Conrad was his friend again, and he'd changed out of his stuffy uniform into a more comfortable tracksuit. He was standing inside Shinmakoku's one and only baseball arena with Conrad and the eight guards Conrad had rustled up to play their impromptu game.
Yuri had no idea how much time had passed. After changing and a warm up they had started a simple game with Yuri batting, the guards' playing field and Conrad as the pitcher. The simplicity of the game and the feel of the bat in his hands gave Yuri a sense of inner peace he hadn't felt in a long time. He felt like he'd been playing for hours and for mere minutes at the same time.
Conrad pitched the ball in a perfect overarm throw and Yuri swung his bat. The crack of the ball hitting the wood made Yuri's heart sing. The ball sailed into the air and the guard playing right field jumped to catch it. He missed and the ball sailed neatly over his head. Yuri took off running keeping one eye on the guards playing outfield positions as they scrambled to get the ball, got in each other's way, and tripped.
Yuri laughed as he ran. He'd believed Conrad's words when they spoke in the office but there was a simple truth to the phrase 'actions speak louder than words'. Being out here, ducking his formal duties as King to play baseball with Conrad was just like old times. Being out here like this told him in no uncertain terms he'd truly been forgiven. Knowing that lifted a huge weight from his shoulders.
Yuri saw out of the corner of his eye that the guard on centre field had finally grabbed the ball. Yuri put on a burst of speed as the guard threw the ball towards the guard on the last base. Yuri's foot hit the plate seconds before the ball landed in the guard's hand with a thump.
"Safe," Murata, designated umpire, called out raising his hand. Yuri whooped and Murata shot him a grin. Yuri had spotted Murata as he and Conrad had made their way to the arena and had immediately collared his friend into joining them. Murata, not being particularly athletic, had agreed to join provided he could be the umpire.
"Nice," Conrad laughed as he raised his hands to catch the ball the slightly disgruntled guard from third base threw to him.
"You need to watch each other and don't be afraid to shout out 'my ball' if you are going to for it." Yuri instructed the guards as he wiped sweat from his brow. "Otherwise you end up running into each other like you did just now."
"Yes Your Majesty," the guards saluted. Yuri grinned and returned to the batting position.
"Your form throwing and catching the ball is improving so keep that up." Yuri encouraged. "That was a great pitch, Conrad." Yuri raised his bat for another throw. He was breathing hard and sweating but he felt better than he had in months. He'd missed playing baseball and the physical exercise made him feel alive again.
"Here it comes," Conrad backed up before running forwards and pitching the ball. Yuri focussed as the small white ball flew toward him in a perfect arch. He timed it perfectly. The bat hit the ball with a resounding crack and sent it flying. Yuri dropped the bat and ran as the ball sailed past the outfield players to land in the grass. This time he touched third base before the left field player had even reached the ball.
"Safe," Murata called out. "It's good to see you haven't lost your touch." Murata nodded to Yuri. Yuri laughed in response.
"I haven't done this in ages, I'm rusty as hell." Yuri chuckled as he rolled his shoulders. He knew he was going to be sore tomorrow but the ache in his muscles from hard exercise would be a welcome relief from the dull headaches he'd been experiencing of late. Yuri suspected they were brought on by stress.
"We should make more time for this." Conrad agreed as he joined them. He'd shrugged off his jacket and rolled up his sleeves. Yuri was pleased to see sheen of sweat on Conrad's brow. "We should also make good on those plans to make baseball our national sport."
"Hey, we could have a formal baseball tournament with the other Kingdoms." Yuri lit up as the thought came to him. "It would be great for relations and fun at the same time."
"I don't think the other Kingdoms know what baseball is, Shibuya." Murata chuckled, "it might not be a fair fight."
"We could have training camps before the match," Yuri was on a roll now. "It would take some serious planning and the first few tournaments might not go well but once it is better established we could have some serious competitions. We could have youth training camps to start training the next generations."
"I think it is a wonderful idea." Conrad nodded. "Not only would it be good for relations but it would bring in trade and economy to the country too."
"It will take a lot of planning and organisation." Murata rubbed his chin. "I'm not against the idea in principle though. I would recommend the first tournament was a friendly to get people into the game and used to the sport."
"Yes, we don't want it to become political like Big Shimaron's swordsmanship tournaments where only their allies win." Conrad chuckled.
"Of course it would be fair," as a sportsman Yuri was horrified by the idea of a fixed match. His indignation made Murata laugh.
"No one would expect anything less from you, Shibuya." Murata chuckled. Conrad laughed as Yuri blushed.
"Well it is starting to get late so we better head back," Conrad squinted up at the sky. "I would imagine Gwendal has noted our absence by now." Yuri grimaced at the reminder but even the threat of Gwendal's glower couldn't ruin his good mood.
"Alright," Yuri turned to the guards, "excellent work today everyone. Keep training and soon you will be a force to be reckoned with."
"Thank you Your Majesty," the guards saluted pleased at the praise.
"Tidy up the equipment and then you are dismissed," Conrad added. The guards saluted him before splitting up to put the equipment away. Yuri, Conrad and Murata started walking back to the castle in companionable silence. Yuri was lost in his thoughts on how to set up training camps and invite all of their friends to join. He would need to do some research back on Earth to see how countries back home set up their camps for inspiration. Sport had a way of bringing people together and a little competitive spirit was good for national pride.
Yuri was just thinking that it might be best to start national with the training camps before going international when Murata spoke and roused him from his thoughts. "I'm glad to see that you two have made up." Yuri glanced sideways at Murata, who was walking in the middle, to see him grinning at them in turn. Conrad looked uncomfortable but Yuri knew that Murata's words came from his heart. He recalled their conversation the day after his wedding where he'd encouraged him to offer Conrad the hand of friendship and mend things between them. While the first attempt had gone sideways, Yuri was hugely grateful to Murata for his advice. If he hadn't made the first move Conrad might not have come to him.
"Me too," Yuri shot Conrad a grateful smile.
"I was a stubborn fool," Conrad said quietly, "I should have made peace with you months ago."
"I don't know if I could have accepted it," Yuri admitted. He looked away to the castle. "I wasn't really in the right headspace."
"The important thing is that you made up now." Murata interjected before Yuri and Conrad could start competing in the guilt department. "I'm glad for you both. There was enough misery going around to last two lifetimes, I'm glad some happiness is returning to this place."
"You know what; you are absolutely right." Conrad nodded and Yuri grinned.
"He generally is," Yuri pointed out which made Conrad chuckle. Murata blushed and sniffed with great dignity which only made Yuri laugh. As he laughed Yuri made himself a promise; he would work harder to be happy. He wasn't going to forget the mistakes he'd made but he wasn't going to drown himself in sorrow anymore either.
He knew part of moving forward was sorting out his relationship with Abby. He had to get over the fact he was forced into marrying her. He slept with her, he got her pregnant and he chose to marry her. He'd done the right thing by marrying her and providing a family for the child. Maybe he couldn't say 'my child' just yet but he could believe in Conrad's words that his feelings would change the moment he held the baby.
The group reached the castle just as Gwendal appeared in the doorway. Yuri gulped as Gwendal glowered at him. Gwendal watched silently as the group meandered towards him like naughty schoolchildren caught skipping class. His arms were crossed over his chest and his lips were pressed into a hard line.
"Good afternoon Gwendal," Conrad grinned.
"Where did you sneak off to?" Gwendal ignored Conrad's greeting and glanced at Yuri.
"Well, um…since it was so nice out we went to play baseball." Yuri admitted as he scratched his face self-consciously.
"So I take it you two have made up?" Gwendal rumbled. Conrad and Yuri looked at each other startled. "Good," Gwendal grunted. "Your Majesty, I expect you to be in your study straight after breakfast tomorrow so we can finish the accounts."
"Yes, of course, I will be there bright and early and ready to work," Yuri beamed. The thought of a whole day doing accounts wasn't enough to dampen his good mood. It appeared Gwendal had forgiven him too! Gwendal grunted, but a faint smile lingered around his mouth. Maybe, Yuri thought, not everyone hates me as much as I first thought.
"I will see you at dinner then," Gwendal turned on his heel and left as abruptly as ever. Conrad laughed and glanced at Yuri with his usual twinkle back in his eye.
"Look like we had a narrow escape there, Yuri."
"Too right," Yuri grinned, "even the thought of a whole day of doing accounts isn't enough to spoil this moment!"
"You better work hard tomorrow to thank Gwendal for going easy on you." Conrad warned as they filed into the castle. "Otherwise there will be trouble."
"I promise," Yuri nodded. "We should draw up an official training regimen for baseball sometime. We need to start thinking seriously about setting up those training camps too."
"I'll help," Murata offered. "I am the manager after all."
"That would be great thanks Murata!" Yuri held up his hand and Murata high-fived him with a grin.
"National and international tournaments here we come!" Murata exclaimed. Conrad chuckled as he followed the boys and listened to their excited chatter. Life and laughter were coming back to the castle and it felt good.
-:-
It was late afternoon and the sun was shining through the window filling the room with brilliant golden light. Abby was sitting in a comfortable chair in her and Yuri's bedroom knitting a blanket for her baby. Her mother had looked down her nose at her daughter taking up knitting but the repeated movements and steady clicking of the knitting needles helped to calm her thoughts.
Abby wound the soft thick white cotton around the needle. She planned to make the blanket white with purple ribbon since she didn't know if she was having a boy or a girl. She liked the colour purple and Yuri's sash was purple so she thought it fitting.
Her argument with Greta nettled and Abby sighed. She wanted the girl to like her but nothing she did ever seemed good enough. After her argument with the girl Abby has retreated to her and Yuri's bedroom to knit and, not that she would admit it, to sulk. She had no idea Greta would react so badly to the news that she was pregnant. She had thought Greta would be pleased. Abby paused in her knitting. Would Greta's strong feelings push Yuri away from her?
Yuri wasn't showing as much interest in the baby as Abby had hoped he would. He wasn't cold exactly but he was hardly doing cartwheels around the courtyard either. It didn't help when that blond menace kept showing up and ruining everything by drawing Yuri's attention away from her. Hopefully with him off courting his farm boy Yuri would finally start giving her some attention.
Abby couldn't entirely shake off the fear that Yuri may not take her side against Greta. If Greta didn't want a sibling then what would Yuri do? Abby didn't want to cause strife between Yuri and his daughter but if it came down to it she would put her own child first. If Greta was going to be a threat to her child she would have to do something about it. Abby felt a flutter under the small bump on her belly and she gasped. Her baby was kicking.
It was strange to feel her baby move inside her. Abby closed her eyes and placed a hand over her belly. Love for her child swelled up inside her to the point she wasn't sure if she could contain it without breaking apart. Tears gathered in her eyes but Abby blinked them away.
The door opened and Abby looked up in surprise. Sophia would have knocked first and Abby thought Yuri was locked away in his study with Gwendal. She was surprised to see Yuri, wearing a strange blue and white uniform, walk into the room. He was smiling and when he spotted her he stopped and a thoughtful expression crossed over his face.
As Abby watched him close the door and walk over to her, she noted how Yuri looked completely different and it wasn't just his unusual attire. His shoulders were relaxed and he didn't have that tension in his face that he usually carried. Abby wondered what could have happened to bring about such an abrupt change in her husband.
"Abby, what are you doing in here by yourself?" Yuri stopped beside her. He smelled of sweat and exertion. Abby wondered if he had been sparring.
"I wanted some peace and quiet to knit," Abby chuckled holding up her knitting needles.
"What are you making?" Yuri asked quizzically.
"A blanket for the baby," Abby said softly. She glanced at Yuri to gauge his reaction. Yuri had a tendency to look pained when she mentioned the baby. This time Yuri looked thoughtful as he reached out to touch the soft wool.
"I'm sure it will be lovely," Yuri said as he continued to run his fingers over the wool. There was a moment of silence before Yuri dropped down to his knees beside her. "Greta came by my study this afternoon." Abby stiffened. "She told me that you told her about your pregnancy."
"Was I wrong to do so?" Abby bit her lip.
"No," Yuri shook his head and met Abby's gaze. She relaxed a little when she saw no anger in his dark eyes. "But I would have preferred to talk to her about it myself first, or for you to have told me about your intentions so we could have spoken to her together." Yuri sighed as he took Abby's hand in his. "Greta was very upset at the news."
"Why would she be upset?" Abby asked. The feel of Yuri's hand on hers made her heart flutter.
"Greta is my adopted daughter; she was worried I might love this new child more than her because this child is my blood. She feared the baby would replace her."
"Why wouldn't you love this child more than her?" Abby asked. Yuri stared at her in undisguised horror and Abby felt her face flush.
"Abby it is not a competition," Yuri's voice was uncharacteristically sharp. Abby dropped her gaze. Yuri reached out and took her chin to redirect her gaze back to him. "Greta is my daughter and I love her. This child will not replace her, end of story."
"I'm sorry," Abby whispered. She could feel her face grow warm and she bit her lip.
"Abby, you must understand that I am perfectly capable of loving both Greta and this child equally." Yuri sighed and dropped his hand. "I have let you down. I've made you feel insecure and I'm sorry. I promise I will try and do better." Yuri paused and fixed her with a stare. "But you need to try harder too, Abby."
"I do try," Abby cried out as frustration and the unfairness of it all loosened her tongue. "Everyone hates me."
"No one hates you." Yuri shook his head. He didn't seem angry but he did look disappointed. "But I admit you've been given a hard time. I want you to know that when I spoke to Greta this afternoon I asked her to give you a chance. She agreed to make more effort to get along with you and to be a good sister to the baby."
"She-she said that?" Abby's voice caught. "You asked her to give me a chance?"
"Yes," Yuri surprised her further by raising her hand and gently kissing the back of it. "Abby, I don't want you and Greta to be at odds with each other. I want you both to be happy." Abby didn't know what to say. Suddenly her earlier fear that Yuri would leave her over Greta's reaction to the news that she was pregnant seemed petty. Abby dropped her gaze, ashamed.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"We all have something to feel sorry for," Yuri sighed heavily. He turned Abby's hand over in his own and studied it like it was the most fascinating thing he'd ever seen. "This castle has been filed with misery these past few months and it's made everyone turn on each other. I want to start again, with you, with Wolfram, and get past all this. I don't want any more sadness."
"I'm not sure I understand." Abby fidgeted. That blond menace was raising his head again. "What does Lord Bielefeld have to do with this?"
"Abby, Wolfram is and remains my friend. I will not have him barred from his own home on the basis of my former relationship with him. He and I are done, I am married to you." Yuri raised his eyebrows. "Unless you are suggesting I would be unfaithful to you?"
"No, never," Abby dropped her knitting to grab Yuri's hand. "I would never suggest you would be unfaithful."
"In that case you have nothing to worry about regarding Wolfram." Yuri said simply. "I don't like men romantically. Besides, Wolfram seems to be perfectly happy with Casper."
"The farm boy," Abby said before she could stop herself.
"Don't call him that, its rude." Yuri admonished her gently. "I want Wolfram to be happy and I don't care who he is with as long as they treat him right. Just as this baby doesn't change my feelings for Greta, my friendship with Wolfram does not change my feelings for you."
"What do you feel for me?" Abby wasn't sure why she asked that question. It wasn't as if she really wanted Yuri to answer her. Yuri paused in quiet reflection. His silence made Abby press her lips together bracing herself for the worst.
"Our relationship started out all wrong." Yuri spoke gently as he rubbed circles across the back of her hand. "I was vulnerable, in pain and drowning in my misery. You offered me an escape from all that and, believe me, I was grateful to you. You made me smile and when I was with you I could forget the pain for a little while. I wanted that so badly." Yuri took a deep breath. "That said, sleeping with you that night was a mistake." Abby flinched although she'd half expected him to say that.
"You wish that our child had never been conceived because that would mean you didn't have to marry me." Abby closed her eyes. She didn't want to see the look on Yuri's face right now.
"Abby I was in a bad place and I wasn't fit to be your husband let alone a father to an innocent child." Yuri's voice wobbled. Abby opened her eyes and looked at Yuri. He looked as pained as she felt and his expression gave Abby pause. He was opening his heart to her and being honest with her. Abby knew that even if it hurt she owed it to Yuri to at least listen to what he had to say. "Instead of being my escape from guilt you suddenly became another thing for me to feel guilty about. And when Wolfram returned to the castle," Yuri paused, "well, it is safe to say I felt like I'd hurt him all over again. I don't really know how to describe it exactly. I was lost in my guilt, grief and anger. I pushed everyone away because I thought I deserved to hurt for all the suffering I had caused.
"However, recent events forced me to realise that my isolation from those around me was only making things worse. I don't want to sit around feeling guilty and depressed anymore." Yuri took a breath. "I want to start again with you. I want to spend time with you and get to know you. I want to be a good husband and father. I want to make you happy but not at the expense of my happiness or the happiness of those I love. I want to at least try and make our relationship work, for our sake and for the baby. I want to be closer to you."
Whatever Abby had been expecting to hear that wasn't it. When Yuri started his speech Abby had thought he was preparing her for bad news. She'd assumed he would leave her because everyone did. No one had ever loved her or given her the time of day. Yet Yuri wasn't saying he wanted to leave her. In fact he was saying the complete opposite. He recognised that their relationship had started wrong but he wanted to start again. He wanted them to stay together and work it out. Abby was shocked to realise she was crying but they were tears of happiness.
Now she understood him. She understood how cornered he must have felt. She understood why those around him were cool and aloof against her. They saw their friend and King being strong armed into a relationship with her whether he liked it or not. It wasn't that they hated her so much as they wanted to protect Yuri. Her actions turned Yuri's family against her and that was not how a relationship was supposed to work. Abby reflected that maybe she was more like her mother than she cared to admit. It was not a good feeling.
"Please don't cry," Yuri looked horrified when he saw her tears. He pulled his sleeve over his hand to rub the tears from her face.
"I'm crying because you are right," Abby smiled. It was her turn to speak the truth and bare her soul. If Yuri was sincere in his desire to be closer to her then she had to meet his honesty with her own. "Yuri, I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I had no idea being with you that night would conceive a child. I never wanted to force you to marry me. But I was so happy." Abby laughed as she wiped away her tears. "I never had love growing up and I was always alone. I was so desperate for love. I knew you weren't entirely happy and I was so afraid you would change your mind and turn away from me. I was afraid of losing everything. I hated Wolfram because I thought you might go back to him.
"Thank you for being honest with me. I understand how you feel now. I want to start over with you too. I promise Yuri, I will do everything I can to be a better wife. I love you and I want to make our relationship work too." Abby dropped her forehead against Yuri's. He did not move anyway from the contact.
"We've both made mistakes," Yuri said gently. "That doesn't mean we can't have a happy future together if we work hard enough for it."
"What brought all this on so suddenly? Not that I'm complaining," she added quickly.
"Conrad came to see me shortly after Greta and I spoke." Yuri said quietly. "He wanted to mend things between us. He said that it was time we all moved on and put the past behind us. I thought he hated me for what happened with Wolfram, I thought he would never forgive me." Yuri's voice caught. He stopped, swallowed hard and continued. "When he forgave me it was as if this great weight had been lifted from me. I didn't realise how much I needed to hear him say those words until he was standing before me. Or rather, he was kneeling," Yuri gave a shaky laugh.
"Conrad asked me to play a game of baseball with him. We went to the pitch and played baseball for hours. It was just like it used to be before everything happened. We even started talking about training camps and organising baseball tournaments. I," Yuri stopped as his voice caught again, "I had no idea how much I missed him until this afternoon.
"Being with him, mending things between us, made me realise I was holding too tight to my pain and guilt. The only way for everyone to be happy is for all of us to move on. That doesn't mean I forgot what happened but allowing guilt to consume me won't help anyone." Yuri smiled at her.
"I'm sorry that I didn't realise how much his distance hurt you." Abby kissed Yuri's forehead. "I think I understand better now how important his friendship is to you." Yuri smiled at her and Abby smiled back. Their gazes locked and something unspoken passed between them. Yuri reached out and gently traced her face with his fingers. Abby's heart jumped at his touch. He surprised her by leaning in and gently kissing her. His lips were soft and warm. Yuri had never made the first move before.
Yuri deepened the kiss and Abby could sense that their relationship had shifted. There had been a wall between them that she'd known was there but pretended not to notice. Now with each kiss that wall was coming down bit by bit. Yuri had told her that he wanted to be closer to her, he'd asked his daughter to give her a chance, and for the first time she wasn't afraid of the future. For the first time she believed in his love. The sudden lightness in her chest made her head spin as she desperately returned Yuri's kiss, unable to express in words how she felt.
"Touch me," the words came out breathless and shaky but Abby needed her husband to touch her right now. She had a desperate need to connect with him on a physical level as well as an emotional one.
Luckily Yuri seemed to understand her just fine. He stood up pulling her gently to her feet as he did so. Abby tugged his white sweater over his head and ran her fingers over his bare chest as his fingers pulled the zipper on her dress. The material fell from her body leaving her in her undergarments. Abby kicked off her shoes as Yuri nipped at her shoulder. She arched into him, pressing her body against his. Yuri breathed in deep and shivered at the contact.
Abby gasped as Yuri picked her up and carried her to the bed. Yuri laid her down carefully before climbing on the bed and straddling her waist. His eyes were dark with a desire Abby had never seen before. It was if he was seeing her for the first time. Abby only know understood why the sex between them had always felt unfulfilling. She'd assumed it was her inexperience with a man. Before Yuri no one had ever touched her. Now she knew better. Their intimacy had been lacklustre because of that wall between them. The lack of an emotional connection was the reason she'd never felt truly satisfied.
She let Yuri take control as he gently pulled off her underskirts and underwear, leaving her bare against the cool sheets. His touch made her skin feel hot and tight. She was more sensitive to his every move and as she reached out to run her fingers across his chest she could see he felt it too. He was breathing hard and his eyelids flickered as she dragged her fingernails down his back. His moan was music to her ears and his pleasure at her touch gave her a thrill that went beyond sexual desire.
Yuri leaned forward, resting his weight on his arms so not to squash her. His lips found hers and the kiss went deep. Abby reached down to unbutton his trousers, pulling them and his underwear down as far as she could. Yuri wriggled and kicked the garments off without breaking contact. For the first time they were truly naked. Their honesty with each other and their promise to work it out connected them in a way mere physical contact couldn't even compare to. Abby ran her hands down Yuri's bare back and arched up as Yuri lay down on top of her. The feel of his skin, the scent of him and his touch, everything felt new to her as if it was their first time. Yuri shifted his weight onto his knees as he freed his hands to wander over her body.
Yuri's touch was gentle, it was always gentle, but it there was a pressure behind his touch that hadn't been there before. Yuri seemed more confident and self-assured. His confidence gave her permission to hold him. She pressed her hands against his skin. She breathed in his scent and focussed on the feel of him. She could feel the muscles of his back flex beneath her hands as he moved. Yuri broke the kiss and his lips followed the path of his hands making Abby moan and arch under him.
When Yuri reached her midsection he paused. Abby looked down to see Yuri flatten both hands against the small baby bump between her hips. He was gazing at it with an unreadable expression. Before Abby could ask what was wrong he leaned down and gently kissed the top of the bump. Abby gasped. The act was so tender it was almost painful to watch. She reached down and covered Yuri's hands with her own trying to convey with her touch everything she felt.
Yuri looked up at her and their gazes locked. He had completely dropped his walls and she saw everything in his eyes. Abby met his gaze and dropped her walls too. She let Yuri see her, all of her. She did not try to hide anything she felt in that moment with him. Yuri shivered at the intensity and for a moment she thought he might pull away. He didn't.
Yuri slid back up her body to kiss her lips once more. His hands wandered over her body, touching and caressing her skin as if committing the feel of her to memory. Abby could do nothing more than writhe under him, her fingernails digging into his back as his fingers found the sensitive spots. She allowed herself to touch him too. She explored his body without shame or hesitation. She nipped at his shoulder as he kissed her neck. She sucked on the skin to leave a mark and he moaned, arching against her. His skin felt hot as if he had a fever.
She wrapped her legs around his hips holding him in place as they kissed. She tangled her fingers in his thick black locks. He was careful, keeping most of his weight on his arms as he moved. The bed creaked beneath them but Abby hardly noticed. Yuri was breathing hard and she could feel him quiver as he held himself in check, careful not to hurt her. His face was flushed and Abby could see her reflection in his eyes. She had no idea the sight could make her so happy. Abby closed her eyes and held Yuri tight as she gave herself to him completely.
The wall between them was gone.
