Chapter 5

Several weeks had passed and there had been no calls for the search and rescue team. Everyone had been spending time at their part-time jobs earning some extra money. Mary was in the office doing bookkeeping for the business and preparing paychecks for everyone.

John and Bobby were working on equipment in the garage. They had the roll up doors opened, and sunlight poured into the workspace. A heavy vehicle was on jacks, and they were trying to hoist the engine from it. Bobby was under the vehicle loosening the bolts while John was doing the same in the engine bay.

Without any warning, the chain they were using snapped, causing the vehicle to become unstable and in an instant everything came crashing down. John was hit in the head hard enough to knock him out and Bobby had no time to get out from under the collapsing mess.

The dogs began to bark loudly and raced to the house as they raised the alarm. Mary hurried to the back door to see what all the commotion was about and followed them back to the garage. She saw John on the floor at the side of the tilted vehicle.

"John!" Mary cried out as she fell to his side to check his wound that was bleeding profusely. She grabbed some clean rags and pressed them to his head as he started to come around.

"Bob…" John slurred for a moment as he tried to sit up. "Bobby…trapped…" he got out pointing to the vehicle.

Mary pulled her cell out and sent out a red alert to Dean and Sam and then called 911. She took John's hand and put it on the makeshift bandage to hold in place. With that done, she moved around the wreck trying to access Bobby's condition. The vehicle was sitting cattycornered and was resting on two jacks that were holding the whole thing up and stopping it from crushing Bobby. He wasn't moving but it didn't look like he was bleeding out either.

Dean and Sam were at a neighboring farm doing some work for the owner when their cells went off at the same time. They pulled them out and without hesitation, dropped what they were doing and raced to the Impala. Dean had it cranked and threw dirt and gravel as he peeled down the driveway toward home.

"What do you think happened?" Sam asked his brother, a worried tone to his voice.

"No idea, but Mom wouldn't send out the bat signal unless it was an emergency she couldn't handle," he replied as he pressed harder on the gas pedal making his Baby surge forward. With the speed Dean was going, it didn't take them long to skid into the driveway of the compound and head for the main house.

"Over there," Sam pointed as Mary stepped from the garage to wave at them.

Dean changed directions and pulled to a stop in a cloud of dust.

"Hurry boys, Bobby's trapped, and your Dad has been hurt too," Mary exclaimed in a rush.

Dean and Sam ran for the open bay door and faltered as they took in the scene. It didn't take but a second for them to survey the scene and start working on trying to get Bobby out from under the vehicle. They got John out of the way and Sam ran to get the heavy-duty air bags they used to lift heavy objects. Dean looked around for wooden blocks that he would wedge under the vehicle to help balance it. If they could get it up enough, Bobby could be pulled out.

"Be careful Sammy; one wrong move and this comes down on Bobby," Dean cautioned him as he watched his brother move the air bags into position.

"Got it. You watch while I inflate the bags," Sam told him as he squatted down and slowly put them in place. He opened the valve to inflate the bag little by little. Everyone held their breath as the vehicle squealed and groaned and tilted a little. Dean gently jammed the wooden blocks in place while Sam moved to the next bag to inflate it.

"The ambulance and fire department are here," Mary told them before stepping back out to get John looked at.

"Just a little more…" Dean mumbled when he saw the vehicle rise into the air. He reached under the vehicle and grasped Bobby's legs to ease him out to safety. "I got him," he called to his brother as he began to check Bobby over.

"We'll take it from here guys," one of the firemen announced as they surveyed the scene. "Let's get this vehicle stabilized and get a back board and neck brace for the victim."

"How is he Dean?" Sam asked as he moved out of the way and joined Dean beside Bobby.

"I don't think it's serious, seems the jacks caught it before it could crush him," Dean sighed with relief. "He's got a gash on his leg and minor cuts and bruising."

"Okay guys, step back and let us do our job," an EMT told the brothers before putting on the neck brace and positioning the back board so they could move him.

"How's Dad?" Dean asked following the EMTs outside. He moved to their mom and gave her a hug.

"He's got a cut on his head and maybe a concussion," Mary told them. "I'm going to follow them to the hospital,"

"Let one of us drive Mom," Sam insisted.

"You take her, and I'll stay here until everyone is done and then join you," Dean suggested.

"Come on Mom, we'll go in my SUV," Sam told her wrapping an arm around her shoulders and guiding her toward where his vehicle was parked.

Dean stayed out of the way and talked to a few of the firemen he knew as they worked on stabilizing the vehicle before packing it up to leave. Dean closed the garage and locked the house up before getting into the Impala and heading for the hospital.

"Hey Bobby, how are you feeling?" Sam asked as he strolled to the garage and stopped at the open bay where Bobby was sitting in a folding chair. It had been nearly a week since the accident had happened. John would be getting his stitches out in a few days and his headache had finally gone away. Bobby was moving around better but still had to be careful of his leg and ribs. "Mom sent some lunch for you," he continued holding up a basket.

"Getting better every day," Bobby replied. "Tell your Momma thank you for me." He was lucky to have only come away with bruised ribs, gash on his leg, mild concussion, and bruising on his arms. The doctor told him to take it easy for a couple of weeks and let his body heal and that was what he was doing.

"How's Dean doing as your assistant?" Sam snickered looking inside and seeing his brother working on one of the snowmobiles as he swore when he caught a finger between the rachet and the metal side of the snowmobile.

"He'll do, I guess," Bobby grunted eyeing the boy to see if he was doing the job right. "Make sure you tighten those bolts snugly and not too tight."

"I hear you old man," Dean spouted, smirking to himself, his lips twitching into a grin.

"Who are you calling old dumbass."

"Mom wants us to head into town to get groceries for the family meal tomorrow," Sam called to his brother.

"I'm almost done here. Give me thirty minutes."

"Okay, I'll be at the house helping Mom. Come and find me. See ya Bobby." Sam headed back to the main house to wait on his brother so they could run the errands.

"Honestly Bobby, are you doing okay?" Dean asked him, giving him a concerned look. After the accident and when Bobby came back home, he was quiet and withdrawn.

"I'm fine son. It'll take more than almost getting crushed by a vehicle to take me out."

"I don't know if I told you or not," Dean started giving Bobby a sideways glance. "I'm glad you're doing okay and wasn't hurt any more than you were. We all do. You're a part of this family Bobby. I hope you know that."

"I do Dean and I'll be okay. I'll be my old self in a few more days, maybe a week. I'm going to go have my lunch upstairs. Thank your Momma again for the food."

"I will. I'm almost done here. If you need me for anything else after we get back, just get me a call."

"I will, and Dean, thanks for helping out and all." Bobby got up and headed around the building to the stairs that led to his apartment. He slowly climbed the steps and let himself in. The food smelled good, and he couldn't wait to dig in.

Dean finished fixing the snowmobile and walked to the main house to find his brother. Mary usually sent them into town for supplies, especially when she was planning a family meal. She had everyone over once a week for the meal and they discussed any problems, offered suggestions, hashed out ideas, and anything else that came up. It was a big deal to everyone, and they enjoyed the time together. This just made their bond as a family stronger.
