Unit 01 stood tall, the remains of Sachiel smoldering in the distance, when a new voice crackled through Shinji's comm system.
"You did good, kid," the voice said, deep and cold, with a hint of confidence that seemed to pierce the tension of the moment.
Shinji blinked, surprised. "Who—who is that?"
From the towering Godslayer, a hatch opened, and a figure appeared briefly in the cockpit's shadow. It was a boy, maybe not much older than Shinji, but the weight of his voice felt far older. He was calm, composed, and clearly in control of the massive war machine.
"My name's Quest Strother," the boy said. "Pilot of the Godslayer. You can thank me later."
Shinji stared up at the enormous robot, still processing what had just happened. Whoever this Quest was, his voice carried an unsettling authority, almost as if he was used to being in command of something so terrifyingly powerful.
"Quest... you saved us," Shinji muttered, still out of breath. "How did you...?"
Quest cut him off. "Doesn't matter. We had a job to do, and we did it." His tone was distant, almost cold, as if the whole event had been little more than a routine mission. "Just stay sharp next time."
Inside NERV headquarters, the command staff listened in on the exchange, intrigued by this sudden development. Misato leaned in closer to the screen, her brow furrowed.
"Quest Strother... Who is he, and why is he piloting that thing?" she asked, her mind racing with questions.
Ritsuko, her fingers flying over the keyboard, quickly scanned for any records. "There's nothing on him in any official database. Whoever he is, he's not part of any known project."
Gendo remained silent, his eyes fixed on the screen, taking in the Godslayer and its mysterious pilot. This new player in the game had certainly changed the stakes.
Back on the battlefield, Quest guided the Godslayer with precise movements, stepping away from the remains of Sachiel. "Mission's done. You're welcome, by the way," he said, his voice barely betraying any emotion. "Try not to get in the way next time."
With that, the Godslayer turned, its engines roaring to life once more, preparing to take off.
