AN: Here's chapter 4. The last chapter didn't get a lot of traction. Was it really that bad? Or is it because I posted it too early? Well whatever, here is the newest chapter. The fates make an appearance and we are almost to camp. I even showed you what Percy looks like. The only change really is the eyes and her being a girl thus having longer hair. Also, is it bad that I keep asking you guys to review? Because no new reviews came in. I hope you enjoy the chapter.
I don't own Percy Jackson and the Olympians. All credit goes to Rick Riordan.
Chapter 4: Strings of Fate
I just finished the 4-hour finals.
Mr. Brunner called me back into the classroom.
He said that I was destined to be kicked out and it was only a matter of time.
I gotta be honest, that stung. I knew I didn't belong being a half-blood and all. But after pushing me so hard the entire year, here he is saying I wasn't good enough. It was even worse as he said this in front of all the test takers who– even though Mr. Brunner only said it to me– was heard clear as day.
I rushed back to my room, tears pricking my eyes.
I packed the few clothes and belongings that I had. I looked up into the mirror.
I saw my 10 year old body because of my slower aging. Long, black hair described being as dark as petroleum. Ruby red eyes staring straight into my soul that reminded me eerily of my dream last night. I look nothing like my mother.
She had long, brown hair and blue eyes that changed color with the light. Her scent is like the interior of a candy shop. Everything about her seems to be calming to anyone she meets.
In contrast, I was said to have an aura of death around me. This made it really hard to make friends. That and the constant switching of schools. Grover was my first real friend not including the demigods I encountered while on the run. I'm really gonna miss Grover. Especially now that I know he knows of the mythological world. I could stop hiding. Well… no use sulking about it now.
As it turns out, I didn't have to say goodbye to Grover because he was riding on the same bus that I was taking to go to the authorities. Grover was fidgeting a lot, constantly looking over his shoulder. I decided it was now or never so I asked the first thing that came to mind.
"Looking for Kindly Ones?"
The look on his face was pure fear. It seemed he almost had a heart attack. Maybe that wasn't the best thing to say.
"W-What do you mean?" He stuttered out,
I told him how I listened in on him and Mr. Brunner last night. He sighed.
"How much did you hear?" He asked.
"Oh not much, say are you a half-blood?"
His expression told me he was closer to that heart attack than before.
"P-Percy, what are–"
"Grover, I already know about the gods since before coming to Yancy and, you're a really bad liar." I interrupted him.
"Oh, o-okay." He seemed to be getting his heart rate to even out. Good, I don't want him to die from shock.
Suddenly, the bus made weird noises and it stopped. We were told to go outside while the driver fixed the issue. Across the street, I saw a fruit stand.
It had cherry red apples, huge watermelons, and other juicy looking fruits. In the stand, three old ladies sat knitting a pair of gigantic socks. Like the size of my torso gigantic. One lady was holding a basket of yarn whilst the other two were knitting the socks. They were knitting with a bright red and a shining gold intertwined together.
Beside me, Grover spoke. "They're not looking at you right. Oh they're staring at you."
"Yeah, weird right." I responded.
"Come on Percy, Let's get on the bus." Grover urgently tugged on my sleeve.
But, I couldn't look away. It was like I'm entranced by the old ladies. Wait, that sounds weird.
The middle lady pulled out a large pair of scissors. She brought it to the intertwined string then…
SNIP. I swear I heard that from across the road.
The bus roared to life and the driver ordered us back in. I retook my seat next to Grover whose skin was as pale as paper and he seemed like he was back on the edge of a heart attack.
"Percy, what did you see?" Grover asked.
I told him how they snipped the yarn and Grover made a sign that seemed like a sign of protection.
"Grover, what does that mean?" I questioned. He just looked at me solemnly like he was thinking how I would look in funeral clothes.
"Grover, does that mean someone will die?" I pressed on. He just continued to look at me solemnly.
"Percy, when we get off the bus, promise me that I will accompany you to the authorities."
I didn't know what to make of that but I told him yes to lessen his stress.
When we got off the bus, Grover went to the restroom. Everytime he gets stressed his bladder acts up.
I was really tempted to book it and just leave him. He was sort of scaring me. He kept muttering about 'Just like last time.' and 'Always 6th Grade.'
However, I knew the risks. If I go off by myself, I will most likely get attacked so having Grover as backup will be better. Plus, he knows where I'll be going so what's the point.
After Grover got out, we hailed a taxi to take us to our destination.
"Hey Percy." Grover said. "I will just warn you that there will probably be a big change coming soon."
"Oh yeah? What is that?" I asked.
"You'll see when we get to the station." He responded.
Once we got off, we approached the entrance. I heard talking inside.
"That would be all. Thank you." It was familiar.
I rounded the corner and came face to face with an officer.
"Percy! Great news." The officer announced. "Someone came and wanted to take you into their custody. We checked their background and it seems like they are perfectly suited to care for you. They also seem to have already met you."
Oh. That is a big change. I was with these officers for a few years but I felt like they were family. But, I don't want to burden them anymore especially with my recent expulsion.
"That's great. I'm really gonna miss you guys. Thanks for all you've done for me."
"Don't mention it kid. Part of the job and you really needed some help."
"Well, where's my new guardian? Caretaker? Parents?" I inquired.
"They're right here." Answered the officer.
"Guardian will be fine Percy. Though, teacher could be more fitting." Said that familiar voice.
The officer stepped aside to reveal a middle-aged man with light brown hair. He was on a motorized wheelchair and had a scent of freshly-brewed coffee.
Mr. Brunner has put me in his custody.
AN: There's the chapter. I was originally going to make it so it doesn't say Mr. Brunner was the one to take Percy into their custody, but Mr. Brunner was literally mentioned at the start of the chapter so that's why the ending is kind of wonky. Please review your thoughts and any guesses what the intertwined threads mean? It's not that hard to guess. I made it pretty obvious.
