Chapter 15
Sunday May 6th
We started off with Sunday meeting. Carl, Judith, Carrol, Daddy, Maggie and I sat at the table in the open area in front of the cells. Merle sort of joined if you can call lurking close enough to hear while trying not to be noticeable attendance. I had the lesson today. Originally it was supposed to be about the value of work and G-ds admonition to Adam that he was to labor all his days. Instead Daddy asked me to skip ahead in Gospel Doctrine to the lesson about the value of tolerance, forgiveness and Christ like love. I think I understand why Daddy was pushing this today. All the hurt feelings and anger won't fix our situation. We need to forgive, even though its hard.
I tried to focus on how Jesus was on the cross asking G-d to forgive the people who were crucifying him because they didn't know what they were doing. I don't think Merle knew what the consequences of his actions were going to be, not right away. I know his intentions were not entirely malevolent. It was an exercise in the ends not justifying the means, and how quickly things can get out of hand. It remains that Merle is going to be here or Daryl isn't. People are going to have to sort themselves out, but it can't be forced. I just hope they can figure out how to coexist before it causes too much trouble for everyone.
After Sunday meeting Daddy blessed Judith with the name Carl and Rick had chosen, Judith Laurel Grimes. She will never know her mother and so she carries her name. Daddy blessed her with health and strength and wisdom. I hope she can live up to that.
She is going to be smart I think. She is already tracking wherever I go. She recognizes Daddy, Carl and Maggie and Carol too. She was colicky most of the day and really only stopped fussing while Daddy blessed her.
Merle is a real talker. Mama would have called it "the gift of gab". He thinks the Governor is going to come after us for getting Glenn and Maggie out like we did, and him and Daryl too. I think it frustrates him that Rick and Glenn keep dismissing his worries. I think things are going to be hard for everyone if he and Glenn keep picking and poking at each other.
I need to give Merle his letters soon. Now that they are together I can't put it off reasonably. Jim insisted that Merle get his letters as soon as possible or he, Daryl and everybody will have more difficulties than necessary. Jim wouldn't say more than that. I intend to do it in the morning.
Monday May 7th
Today was a hard day. It seems that there are two opposing sides and I've managed to get squashed between them. One side is the Merle stays side, the other is the Merle leaves side, and you can guess who wants him to leave. The problem is that Glenn and Maggie are making things hard for the rest of us. In Merles defense, he's been keeping a pretty low profile, for him. He seems willing to do whatever it takes to stay, mostly because that's what Daryl wants.
I was looking for Merle and Daryl when I saw Maggie in the yard and asked if she'd seen him. She got upset that I would be looking for him and you know how she pries. I should have seen it coming and avoided her, but, I was nervous about his reaction to me holding onto Jim's letters for as long as I had. I explained that I needed to give him something. Immediately she wanted to know, "What do you need to give him" like the act of talking to him is a betrayal or some horribly dirty act. Fortunately, when you speak of the devil, or get Maggie screaming about him, he appears.
In this instance Daryl was right there behind him running to keep, up in an attempt to stop him from doing something foolish. I don't know why he did it, but he called me Sugar and asking what it was I wanted to give him, "sooo badly." I suspect that was because maybe he isn't good with names and it was the first term of endearment that came to mind, or because he has a way of sticking innuendo into any situation with just his tone, and he was trying to see just how mad he could make Maggie. Or maybe irritating her wasn't his intent. Just a happy accident. Anyway the commotion was enough to attract everyone into the yard to see what was going on.
I just wanted it over so I just handed his bundles of papers to him, announced what they were and apologized for not handing the packets over sooner. I also let him know that Jim had written some other stuff for the both of them as well, but that it was in my Ruby Red Notebook. I made it clear that they could borrow it to read, but couldn't have it because it's mine. I think I mentioned the chaos around us, then he was all "Thanks Darlin'.", before Maggie grabbed me and dragged me over to Daddy.
Thank goodness Daddy was able to defuse her so quickly. Maggie is hurt and scared and traumatized. I was able to talk things out with her, sort of. I'm trying to be understanding, but the drama is starting to stick my nerves. Heck, she's the reason Daryl can barely look at me straight and always calls me Ma'am. At the same time, I'm trying to be sensitive. Daddy gets it. I always appreciate Daddy's ability to look at a situation and look at all the sides instead of jumping to conclusions.
Judith gave me an excuse to bow out of most of the unpleasantness. I alternated between taking care of her and taking care of the mending pile while she napped. I found catnip and mint both growing in the yard. I used them to make her some tea for her colic and it seems to have mostly worked.
That wasn't the only interesting event today, Somehow Daddy and Carl managed to talk Rick into stepping down as leader. He needs to get his head on right and seems to realize that he's really checked out for the last little while.
We are going to vote on things. It is still unclear weather I get to vote. I asked several times without anything but a "We'll see." It was the same for Merle. Carl gets to vote, I noticed.
Andrea came for a short visit at about lunch. She wants Rick and the Governor to meet and work something out. Even though Rick isn't officially our leader anymore he's in charge of negotiations. I think Daddy is more level headed, but I guess he's the only one the governor is willing to talk to. They are supposed to meet on Wednesday morning.
Merle was able to find an ally of sorts on one front and that is Michone. She agrees with him on the Governor thing and argued that we should prepare for retaliation. Andrea reinforced that the Governor would come back if negotiations go badly. Rick, Maggie and Glenn were suddenly on board with reenforcing the fences and piling up supplies. I just hope it's enough. According to Merle, the Governor has a Bradley Tank.
Merle's the one who shot Michone in the leg. I had just gotten Judith to sleep and was getting ready for bed myself, when I overheard Merle trying to apologize to Michone for shooting her. She accepted, sort of, in a wary and distrustful way. I couldn't help listening. My cell is the one on the end, and the sheets aren't walls. If he can keep his nose clean, he may be able to earn her trust. Making friends with someone, any one, would take some pressure off Daryl.
To be honest, I kind of like having him around. I can't explain it, but he just feels comfortable. Or this place is more comfortable when I know he's around. More steady and calm. Crazy right, 'cause he's the least calm or steady person I've ever been acquainted with.
Well good night.
Tuesday May 8th
Rick, Michone and Carl went on a run to find guns and ammo this morning. Something about clearing out the ammo locker at the sheriffs office in Kings County. Carrol and I did household tasks and watched Judith. That was enough to keep me pretty busy. Judith is my favorite fashion accessory. She cuddled into my chest while I did chores, stared up at me while I sang and gave me someone to talk to. While I waited for laundry to dry I got roped into helping Carrol clean guns, fill magazines and put extra ammo in zip bags so no one runs out of ammo if we get attacked. By the time we finished, the laundry had dried, so I got it folded while she stashed guns around the perimeter. After that I weeded, and made lunch.
Glen and Maggie used spiked chains from the trunks of some of the police to make a device to stop any more trucks full of walkers from smashing the gate. They rigged them to pull across the road when the chain on a reel on the left side of the gate is wound up. If you crank the one on the other side they get pulled off of the road. They made 3 sets and put tin around the spools to protect whoever is cranking the chains up. Hopefully they work. They are supposed to keep any vehicles from even getting too close. I hope it works, because clearing out the yard is dangerous and time consuming. Michone gave them the idea before she left with Rick this morning.
Daddy and the Dixons worked on the fences most of the morning. They were supposed to be making sure Daddy didn't overdo things. Shortly after lunch I saw Daddy and Merle studying the bible discussing the merits of the Song of Solomon, and how it managed to get into the Bible.
Daryl, in the meantime, was where I figured he'd be. I sat and handed him wrenches and studied until I had to go inside to change Judith's clothes, my clothes and the strip of cloth I have been tying her to my chest with. She and I took a bath together because it went everywhere. By the time we were dried and dressed her people were back. As soon as I could I hear Carl, Rick and Michone talking I turned her over.
I love her like she was mine but she's not. She only spends 2 or three hours away from me most days so she may as well be mine. I don't know what I'm going to do if she ever calls me Mama. I keep trying to refer to myself as "Bethy" to her. I don't want to step on toes. Eventually I have to have a conversation with Rick about what the long term plan is. I don't know what the rules for discipline, her education both religious and academic and activities are. I don't know when he intends to take over. When she's weaned off the bottle? potty trained? or when she lays her first ill to rest and can keep up with him?
I'm getting her back now, so good night.
Wednesday, May 9th
Rick is calming down but frustrated with the situation, he's bargaining with his hallucinations, and went to bargain with the governor in this state of mind. He took Daddy and Daryl with him, thank goodness. It didn't go very well from what I can tell but I think it might have gone worse if they hadn't been with him. I'm not sure how it could have gone worse, maybe shooting at each other instead of leaving with a very temporary truce of sorts?
They did manage to keep it non violent, which was better than we managed here. I almost shot Merle, or Glenn. I really think I was actually going to do it. Only the indecision over which one to shoot stopped me from hurting either of them. I opted for the ceiling which definitely got their attention. I couldn't break up the fight, they are both bigger than me. So there it is.
I talked to everyone individually in an attempt to figure out what I had stumbled into. It seems that the "adults" are completely incapable of acting like adults. Merle wanted to go after the governor and kill him. Glenn tried to stop him. They are completely incapable of getting along. Once again Glenn had to do things Merle perceived as getting between him and Daryl. Maggie ran her mouth and escalated things. Merle took Glenn grabbing his shirt as a physical act of offense. Carrol and Carl were scared and tried to get out of the way. Michone was content to watch and see who won. She thought Glenn's technique was pretty evenly matched with Merles size. I don't get her at all.
Maggie and Glenn are pissed that I took Merle's side. I didn't take Merles side. I'm not taking any side. They were all acting like a bunch of spoiled children. How do they think I took his side? I told them to each get in a cell and stay there and said I would shoot whoever came out before Daddy got back to sort them out. I threatened Glenn, according to Maggie. I did not threaten him. It was not a threat, I meant it. I clearly stated that I would shoot all three of them, not just Glenn. I meant it. They wouldn't stop arguing until I amended my threat by adding that they'd better shut up to so I could get Judith to go back to sleep. I then proceeded to study in the quiet since leaving them unsupervised was obviously not an option. Weeding was put on hold until I could turn them over to Daryl and Daddy.
Daddy wasn't as mad at me as Maggie thought he'd be. He actually supported my I actions. I'm surprised. He thinks trying to separate them would have only ended up with me getting hurt. He called it problem solving. I'm not grounded, he didn't tell me how disappointed he was, he was actually proud of me. He thinks Maggie will probably come around in a day or so.
Daryl wasn't mad either. He told me he doesn't blame me at all, and it's perfectly normal for him to want to shoot Merle a couple of times a day.
The negotiations didn't go very well and I can't say that I'm very surprised. As I mentioned, Rick is still in the midst of psychosis. His shen is out of balance due to grief and guilt causing weakness in his lungs and and stagnation of his spleen and kidney chi.
At any rate, the Governor wants us out and we can either leave or be removed. He said we have until Saturday to get out. They won't let us join Woodbury either. There was so much damage done when Rick and Daryl went to rescue Glen and Maggie and even more damage done when they went back to to rescue Daryl and Merle, that we have been deemed too dangerous to have as neighbors.
We have no where to go so we are going to stay and will have to fight to keep our home. The problem is that he has a whole town full of people and we have 11 if you include Judith. Carl is just a kid and I'm no fighter. He has soldiers and armored personnel carriers and way more guns, ammo and everything. I don't even know why he wants this prison.
They have walls, houses, doctors and medicine and a great setup according to what Michone, Andrea and Merle said. They have a school, a clinic, a library, running water and electricity for an hour every morning and every evening. They have almost 300 people. We are going to have to figure out a way to out smart them because we don't have the brawn they have.
We did vote on a council. I got to vote too. We wrote 3 names each on a slips of paper and whoever got the most votes are on our Council. Daddy, Glen and Daryl are it. We are going to have a meeting for everyone every Sunday evening. We can bring proposals and issues up with them during the meeting and they will discuss and vote on things. When they have an important issue everyone will be able to let them know what we think but the council will have the final say.
They are having their meeting now and will have another meeting with everyone at breakfast to report what was decided.
Thursday, May 10th
Today was a whirlwind of activity. The council decided that we should all vote on weather to leave or stay and we are staying. Only 1 person voted to leave. I didn't realize that anyone might actually consider that option.
It was normal day except for preparing to be attacked, setting booby traps and making the prison look empty and abandoned. The guys intend to lure the Governors people into the tombs and let the ill take care of them. If the ill don't manage the job, then there will still probably be less for us to have to clear out later. The Governors people will kind of be doing us a favor. On the other hand, they could just end up adding to the number of ill in the hallways. I don't like it, but Sun Tsu emphasized least effort for best return.
Merle read "The Art of War" in the Marines. He had also knows about traps used in Asia during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He had some very interesting ideas, such as putting leashes on the ill and tying them to posts just outside the fence, punji pits, and "cartridge traps". The pits we did, minus the sticks. The cartridge traps traps would be difficult to find and disable after everything is done so we didn't do that either. We made spiked deadfalls in the doorways and pieces of plywood with nails and screws that will flip down and hit anyone who comes through the doorways of the different blocks and some of the cells. We will rig them with tripwires when we leave, or make it look like we've left.
Carl, Daddy Judy and I got a car ready with supplies. We are going to the tree stand that Daryl and Merle set up in the woods while they were "reconnecting". We'll be leaving the prison early Saturday morning. The adults are worried that something will happen to us if we're at the prison iwhen the Governor and his people attack.
I found some senna leaves and am thinking about making an urn of "iced tea" minus the ice and getting Carol to help me make some cookies with poke root. We could set it on the table outside like a "welcome to your new home" offering. Maybe with a bouquet of stinging nettle, poison ivy and wild flowers, and put out paper cups and plates. That combination should be good for keeping anyone who partakes, uncomfortable and in the bushes. Of course, no one with half a brain would eat anything left out like that under these circumstances, but you never know.
Friday, May 11th
It seems that even the heavens realize that things aren't looking good for us. It started out bright but it the clouds rolled in shortly after lunch and by dinner the sky was completely overcast.
Merle and Michone went missing this morning. The Governor told Sheriff Grimes that they would leave us alone if we turned Michone over to him. Rick put Merle up to doing that early this morning and when Daryl found out he made the Sheriff go with him to stop Merle before it was too late.
They caught up to him just in time. He couldn't do it. He had let Michone go and was going to try to take out the governor on his own. The Governors men had gotten a hold of him and were working him over real good. I spent the better part of two hours applying poultices to his face arms and chest. Daddy used it as an opportunity to teach me how to do proper sutures, so it was educational. Merle should be fine to fight by tomorrow. I left him with chamomile, echinacea, dandelion and willow tea.
Carol and I made cookies for the Woodbury people's welcome. I have the senna and peppermint ready to brew tomorrow morning before I leave with Carl and Judith. She and I prepared packages of food and bottles of sweetened raspberry mint tea and water for everyone. We also made cookies, nice ones with oatmeal and crazins, walnuts and white chocolate chips. Cookies make any situation better. Well, they cheer me up.
While we were working on rations and a laxative welcome, Rick and Daryl were working on a project. First they cut and rolled up the sod in a circle around the garden. Then they dug a series of pits around the garden with the back hoe and then used bamboo frames to hold up the sod that they had cut earlier. It ended up looking really good, exactly like it had before. They were doing it to protect the gardens from being molested. They were very appreciative when I went to deliver cool sweet mint and raspberry leaf tea, sandwiches and of course cookies.
Carl, Glenn and Maggie spent most of the day reinforcing the fences and taking care of the ill. They were stacking them into a berm or wall I guess to slow the other ill down and hopefully the people from Woodbury too.
Shortly after Daddy and I patched Merle up and the tea I gave him had relieved some of the pain he was in, he asked me for a spool of thread. After a few minutes of discussion with Rick and Daryl he began rummaging around in the police cruisers by the gate. Shortly he was on his way into the tombs with a flare sticks, flash bangs and grenades and made sure everyone knew not to follow him in there till everything was over. He said he was going to make some traps and that no one should go in until he cleared the them.
Glenn talked to Daddy about asking Maggie to marry him early this morning. Daddy just didn't expect them to skip everything and go straight to married. We all learned of this after dinner when Glenn stood and got every ones attention. It went pretty much like: "Um, hi everyone, um, Maggie and I, well we're married now. Um, so, um, if nothing important happens, a, well, we're going to be honeymooning in the tower until um…" "Morning. Leave me and Glenn alone until morning. Someone better be dying if anyone bugs us before then!" Maggie dragged Glenn off and I guess thats that.
Well I'm going to finish packing up so goodnight.
Saturday, May 12th
We left early this morning, despite the drizzly weather. I could see the squirrels that Daryl had injured to attract the ill into the yard. It really did look empty. I got up early and brewed the senna tea and set out the very carefully arranged bouquet and left a letter that we were going to Alabama and not to worry about us coming back.
We then drove out to the tree stand and covered the car with branches in a way that we could uncover quickly and get away if we needed too. Then we helped daddy climb the tree stand and that's where we stayed. It was a hunting blind that was on a platform about 20 feet up wedged between 3 pine trees.
Carl and I studied and nibbled trail mix while listening for gunshots and worrying about what was going on. The only one not anxious was Jude. She spent the morning napping, eating and destroying diapers. Daddy sat and read scriptures and helped with holding and feeding the baby. She's two weeks old. She shouldn't be outside in weather like this.
At about nine thirty we heard engines approaching. At that point any pretense of calm disappeared. Carl immediately produced a set of binoculars and we took turns trying to watch what was going on. At first there wasn't much to see. A couple of army trucks and a pickup and some other cars came up the road and started shooting at everything. They set the watch towers on fire and killed the ill who had been allowed to wander into the yard. Due to the trees, we couldn't actually see beyond the garden to the prison itself. After about ten minutes they noticed that no one was there to shoot back. They looked around a bit and noticed the picnic table and a few people gathered around it. I wish we had made more cookies and tea. There wasn't enough for the size of the crowd. I wasn't expecting the poke root and berries or the senna to work immediately. That would be a surprise for later. Another ten minutes or so passed and the people gathered at the table started to move towards the prison and out of sight. We heard the occasional sound of gunfire, but had no idea what was going on beyond that for a while. Then a bunch of people ran back to the cars and thats when everyone we had left behind started to shoot back. The Woodbury people retreated very quickly.
As soon as we saw the Woodbury people leave we climbed down. While we were uncovering the car and getting ready to head back a boy who seemed to be about my age came running towards us with a rifle. He stopped when he saw Daddy and raised the barrel at him. Carl killed him, He wouldn't drop his gun. He kept holding it. I don't think he was going to put it down. His finger was in the trigger guard. Why didn't he just drop it, just open his hand, but he clung on. I understand why Carl couldn't take the chance.
Daryl, Merle, Rick, Michone and went to make sure they don't come back. It's late and they still aren't back. I'm worried. I've been praying for them to get back safely. I think they will be okay in my heart, but my head says they're out numbered. We locked the gates but I can hear ill rattling around in the tombs. We have a lot of work to do tomorrow, what with cleaning and doing what we can to repair the towers.
Sunday, May 13th
We are having our first regular Council Meeting right on schedule. I had to get a notebook or binder for meeting notes. This is not what I intended to do to my diary.
7:00 PM
Rick announced the meeting and introduced the council to everyone. Everyone now knows that the council consists of Daddy, Daryl and Glenn. Daddy proposed that we needed a secretary and suggested me. No one objected so I have an official title. They paused the meeting long enough for me to get paper and a pen which is this.
7:23
Daddy talked and welcomed the Woodbury people.
7:27
Daddy proposed rules: Be polite and avoid conflict, Don't hurt people or fight, Don't touch other peoples stuff without asking, everyone works. The council voted unanimously in favor.

I started and ended this Sunday with meetings. Glenn took the lesson today. He didn't hide how nervous he was very well. Of course, he's not too good at hiding anything. He did okay. It was nice actually. Daddy blessed the sacrament, we sang, it was a nice bit of normalcy.
Carl was pensive, but I don't think it was the prayer meeting. Shooting that boy has affected him more than he's been willing to admit. I think he needs time. Time, and maybe some hunting with Daryl. That always seems to be good for him. Being in nature, fresh air and manly man time, maybe I should talk to Daryl about it.
We spent the morning cleaning up the yards and the inside of the prison, except for the tombs. Merle said to leave the tombs until he got back so we left that area alone. It was easy since there was so much to do to get everything back the way it should be. Glenn and Maggie loaded bodies into the truck and stacked them outside the fence to become part of the walker wall. I have to call it something. Carol and I scrubbed the blood off of the floors, and the cement pad outside the cell block with the buckets of water Carl lugged for us. When body removal and cleanup was done we dismantled the deadfalls and spike boards.
We were gathering up all the pallets into a neat pile and sweeping up the debris and trash on the cement areas when Rick, Michone, and the Dixons got back from checking out what the Governor was up to.
The Governor's next move had been to kill his own people. Karen was the only survivor. They were scared and didn't want to try going around and attacking the back of the prison, so he shot them. Michone and the guys escorted her back to Woodbury. That's why it took so long for them to get back.
Andrea was found locked in a room with a walker. She killed it but got bit in the process. The governor had left her with it before they came to attack us yesterday. Tyrese and Sasha were left to guard the fences at Woodbury but had no idea she was there. They thought she had come to us in the prison.
It turns out, the Governor brought everyone who was able bodied to attack us, so they had Karen, Tyrese, Sasha , a doctor and two nurses to guard their walls, go on runs and take care of everyone.
There were not nearly enough people to take care of 8 elderly people, 11 pregnant women, 10 nursing mothers, 11 babies, 15 toddlers, 18 children, 6 adolescents, 13 teenagers and 13 injured people. That is why our people decided to bring the Woodbury citizens back with them. They didn't get here till this afternoon. It took a while for them to get packed up and ready to go. It's going to be different having so many people around. Thats 47 adults and 63 people 18 and under for a total of 110 People from Woodbury and the 11 of us for a total of 121 people.
The first thing Merle did when they got back was to check all the traps he'd set in the tombs and clear out walkers. When he declared it clear, we were able to settle everyone from Woodbury into A and B blocks. That's why the notes from the meeting mention A, B and C blocks. Maybe in the future we will even have people in and D blocks too.
We had the council meeting tonight as planned. It was probably a good thing. Government is always a necessary evil. Even in a family, there needs to be someone in charge making sure everyone is getting along, contributing and getting what they need. The hard part is keeping it in its proper bounds.
I'm a government employee. It's not a career path I had envisioned for myself. It was decided mostly because I've been keeping a record since all this started, so I may as well continue. I suppose it won't be too awful, I'm not using my diary as a public record though. If they want me to take a census and keep meeting minutes then they need to get me office supplies. A mechanical typewriter would be nice too. My english teacher, Miss Nancy had one in her classroom and used it to type out our tests. Maybe the next run can include a stop in at the office supply.
Monday, May 14th
I'm trying to keep my routine, but Jude is a disruption. An adorably chubby cherubic one, but a disruption all the same. It's challenging to do my qi gong when she wakes me up in the morning, but I'm managing. I read my scriptures out loud because she quiets when she hears me. When I read quietly to myself she fusses.
I helped Carroll make oatmeal for everyone outside on the barbecue grill. It was offered with strawberry jelly or cinnamon sugar and non dairy creamer. She thinks we are going to have to get a kitchen schedule going because we aren't cooking for ten people, we are cooking for about 120 people.
After breakfast Merle took me into the tombs. Daryl and Daddy told him that I was going to need office supplies, so he escorted me to the administrative offices to see if I could use what was already there. On the way we got to talking. He really isn't so bad. He apologized that I had to see him fighting with Glenn. He was very specific that he was sorry I saw it, not that he did it. He was sorry that a lady such as myself had to witness Glenn being put back in his place. Of course he didn't phrase it nearly as nicely as that and I'm not going to quote him.
I know Mama would say he has the gift of gab, but he also has a knack for getting me to spill my thoughts out loud without realizing, until its to late. I get too comfortable. I ended up talking about my concerns about Carl somehow. He knew something was bothering Carl, he just didn't know what. He said he had promised to teach him to play Mumbly Peg before he got left on the roof. He intends to make good on that promise and teach him how to apply it to hunting. While they're out he'll get Carl to talk everything out. I don't know if I said something I ought'nt've. I don't s'ppose Merle would make it worse. It might be a good thing.
There was so much of everything I need in the administrative offices. We brought back binders so I can keep the census separate from the chore rotations, and the food inventory and the cell assignments. There was even an old typewriter in a leather zipper case in the wardens office. Under it was a case of ribbons and several boxes of carbon paper (recommended by Merle so I don't have to type things we need more than one copy of dozens of times). We also carried back packs of pencils, pens, correction fluid, paper, legal pads, file folders and post it notes. I also hijacked a file cabinet, rolodex and blank refill cards for it.
The prize was an old metal sign that says "THIS WORKPLACE has gone _ Days Without An Accident" with hooks to hang numbers and a box full of matching number tiles. I think that it would be cool to keep around. It looks like an awesome way to remind everyone to be careful. I started it with on 1 when I set it up.
Carrying everything back took us 4 trips. It then took me about an hour to set up everything in my cell and get things squared away. As soon as I had everything arranged to my satisfaction, Daddy, Glenn and Daryl drug chairs up to the balcony so they could sit outside my cell and interview everyone from cell block B while I took notes.
Daddy, Glenn and Daryl each had a list of questions they asked everyone. Daddy asked everyone their occupation, education level, where they were from, who their parents were, if they had children, about any health conditions and how they ended up in Woodbury.
Daddy let me add to his list. I wanted dates of birth, graduation dates, and what kinds of skills they had, what their injuries were (the injured ones), and due dates (the pregnant ones).
Glenn asked them what places they had been to and hypothetical ethical questions.
Daryl wanted to know if they had ever been convicted of crimes, if they had killed anyone and why, and how many ill they had killed, and about being addicted to things and stuff like that.
We have 31 school aged children, 56 adults (13 injured) 62 if you count people over 16 as adults, and 27 children under 5. When all the pregnant women give birth, the youngsters will out number the adults. It took most of the day to get through a third of them.
During interviews we learned that Eleanor Yates is expecting in about two weeks. She taught college level history and is going to teach and history in the school.
Danny West has a left humerus that's broken and an elbow that got dislocated that's healing up. He has a degree in engineering and is going to tutor the kids in math, reading and logic. They are going to get the library set up like a classroom so that school can begin Wednesday.
While we did that, Carrol, Rick, Carl and Maggie organized most of the people to help clean and take care of the fences and keep the kids out of trouble. Michone and Merle made several trips to Woodbury and back to gather supplies to feed everyone while they get settled in.
Melody Irish is 17 and she volunteered to watch the little littles. Most of them lost their parents in the battle Sunday. Her best friend Clara Washington is 18 and also volunteered so it was decided that they get the daycare, which will probably be evening and night care as well. They seem nice. I think I will try to get to know them and help out in the nursery when I don't get roped into other things. I'm sure they will need help. Melody has gunshot wound to her left thigh that's healing so she doesn't walk very fast. Clara is pregnant but not due for 4 months. Her boyfriend was shot by the Governor. I think she mostly wants to practice being with little kids and toddlers.
Jordan Fairchild is 94 and has volunteered to read to the children, and help plan farming activities. He's too frail to operate a shovel, but his eyes and ears are just fine. He said he can weed if someone will help him get up and down, and help in the kitchen with peeling and cutting vegetables. He also knows how to tie flies and would love to teach anyone willing to learn to make flies and to fish. He seems very grandfatherly.
Anyway, it's late and I have more interviews to record tomorrow. The council wants to start bright and early in the morning.
Tuesday, May 15th
2 days and no one has been hurt.
We had reconstituted hashed browns with gravy for breakfast and tang. Right after breakfast we got down to business. I managed to take care of Judith and do my secretarial duties. I hope we can finish tomorrow. We took a 30 minute break for lunch and then kept at it until dinner at 6.
Carl and Rick filled in the holes under the sod so that no one could get hurt falling into them. They organized people to weed the gardens and till several new plots. They directed the older kids and teenagers to help plant potatoes, onions, cabbage, garlic, beans, peppers, squash and tomatoes. They also expanded the succession garden.
Breanne, Darrick and Linda helped Carrol set up an expanded outdoor kitchen and set up tables and equipment salvaged from the cafeteria. They think that if we could get some wood stoves set up in the indoor prison kitchen we can eat in the cafeteria this winter, and maybe this summer too. Or install them in each block and then each unit could organize their own meals.
They were working together at a Waffle House in Macon and got stuck in the office for three days before escaping the ill. They weren't able to find their families, so they became one. Darrick was left behind because he had sprained his knee. He's okay now. The dishwasher, Owen was shot by the governor. Darrick and Linda consider themselves married. Linda had Elliott three months ago. Breanne and Owen had Sara 5 days ago. Sara was a bit early, but if she hadn't been, Owen wouldn't have seen her before he died.
There are a lot of up sides to the infusion of people from Woodbury. We have a lot of people with skills that we really need. We have a plumber, an engineer and an electrician who are going to inspect the systems in this old building and see if we can get things working, like the showers and toilets. They are also going to help Merle work on reinforcing the fences.
There are no herbalists or anyone who practices Chinese Medicine but I will stay on the lookout if one wanders over to us. In the meantime I'm keeping up on my studies by myself.
Rick and Daddy have teamed up with two of the older gentlemen and are planning to expand the crops outside the fences but inside the walker wall. It's not to late to seed for hay, which we will need if we find any livestock. Also, they can grow oats for oatmeal, millet and barley for cereal. We just need to get someone to salvage fuel for a tractor.
There was a set of twins born today. Their mother is devastated because her boyfriend was here when he died, but we are going to help her all we can. The other nursing mothers have offered to help her with nursing. We may need to get formula somewhere if they can't.
The dating pool has improved. There are some guys my age that seem really nice, Jason, Nate, Aaron, Avery, Levi and Harry. There are also other girls my age. Shannon, Jessica, Melody, Iris and Nancy and I had a manicure party after dinner in my cell. I only have the one jar of nail polish but it was fun, and its nice having people my own age to hang out with. They spent the entire time filling me in on all the details about the guys our age.
Jessica brought her 3 week old Ricky. I guess it was Judes first play date too. I suppose thats the upside to all the new people here. Jude will get to grow up with lots of kids. At first they didn't realize that Jude isn't mine. They just assumed Rick and I had something going. They were all giving me varying degrees of "What's it like being with such an old guy." when He came to take her for the night. It was actually more horrific than when everyone thought Daryl and I had something going on. Once I explained they seemed disappointed. They thought I was out of the dating pool.
With all the pregnant and nursing women, the men are really outnumbered. Most of them lost a boyfriend or husband to the Governor. Well, 3 of them are expecting the Governors kids and one was with one of the Governors soldiers. According to Karen they're still alive. I guess that means that some of the kids have daddies lurking somewhere.
Michone thinks that the governor will come back. She wants to take a few people to hunt him down. The council voted against it but she may go on her own.I think she's right. Merle thinks he needs to be caught as well, but he doesn't want to leave his brother. I know I would feel better if I knew he wasn't lurking around somewhere.
Wednesday, May 16th
3 days no one got hurt.
Michone left first thing this morning. She is going to look around for the Governor on her own. She promised Merle and Rick that she will come back for them if she finds him. Rick told that they made her promise to have backup before taking any action. I hope she finds him, and, I hope she keeps her promise. I hope the weather stays warm and clear for her.
We finished the last of the interviews this morning. It's a relief. I was able to put together chore rotations for guard duties, fence duty and garden duty. Everyone takes turns with those within reason. We have 6 people who can't get up the stairs to the guard tower or who have bad eyesight. They are also not able to help with the fences. Those people can still do things though. Several of the injured are able to weed in the gardens or help in the kitchen.
Leslie has been helping with the kids. He is a wonderful story teller. Yesterday he told the kids about a dragon who was useless because he couldn't blow out fire. Jelly beans came out whenever he tried. Today he told them a story about a rusty old knight. I don't know what he's going to tell them about tomorrow. I do know that all the kids and most of the teens and even some adults are going to gather around after dinner to listen. He also reads to the kids in the library and listens to them read too. He is hoping to help any of the children who are struggling with reading. He said that there'd nothing you can't learn to do if you can read and preserver.
Dorris retired from teaching 5 years ago but managed to get her classroom in order pretty quickly. She may need a wheelchair to get around, but she has no issue keeping the kids in order. Sasha was a school secretary, and is doing well with teaching reading and basic math to the 5-8 year olds. She has two helpers because kids can be a handful. Danny has the math under control and Eleanor is settling in rather well too. I will be experiencing school tomorrow and will get to see first hand.
I'm kind of nervous about starting school tomorrow. It's going to be different than at the Haywood's. Partially because there are actual classroom-ish rooms and partially because its been a long time since I've been around so many people at once. I suppose I'm going to start pre calculus after all. I hope It doesn't take too much time away from my other studies.
There are a couple of classrooms or conference rooms on each side of the library. Mr West, Mrs Yates, and Miss Dorris each have a classroom. We will be switching classes every hour and a half. We are going to be separated by age. There's a 6-8 class, a 9-11 class, a 12 -14 class and then the rest of us.
Theres also a preschool for the toddlers, but its mostly to keep them occupied. Most of them lost their parents so the daycare is in shifts until the council can get them each assigned to an adult to care for them. Even then there may be a night shift in case their surrogate needs child care for watch or a break.
Enough about worrying about tomorrow. Today was nice. I got to skip the first day due to other duties. I was able to hang out with the other girls while washing Daddy's and the Grimes laundry. I never thought of it as a social event but I guess it is. So was weeding while I waited for it all to dry.
We gossiped, talked about our lives before everything happened, and how we came to be here. I came to realize I've had it pretty good. Jessica got caught by some bad people and barely managed to escape. That's how she had Ricky. She doesn't know for sure who the daddy is. I feel bad for her, and just want to hug her. The only person she lets touch her is Ricky. She lights up whenever she looks at him. He's so small and sweet, its hard to imagine that he came from such ugliness. She's had the worst of all of us.
This evening at dinner Jacob and Debbie got married. It was pretty quick. They were in blue jeans and t-shirts but you could see how happy they were. Daddy read from the bible and helped them to say their vows. Not modern vows people write for themselves. The traditional ones. She promised to love, honor and obey, and he promised to love honor and protect. They exchanged rings and then Derrick brought out pancakes with flowers frosted on them. They tasted like boxed cake mix. They were so good. I have to say that the food has been very good since the kitchen was reorganized.
Rick gave Jude back at dinner and Carl sat by me in time for the wedding and desert. He has a lot on his mind. He thinks his dad is depressed. I agreed that everyone is probably depressed, traumatized and in various stages of grieving. I let him know that is hasn't escaped anyones notice, and helped him brainstorm things he can do to cope with his trauma and his dad's.
Jude is restless. Maybe a goodnight cuddle will help us both sleep well tonight.
Thursday, May 17th
4 days without anyone getting hurt.
Well, school didn't start off too bad. I started off with Mr West at 7am. He asked us where we were in math and gave each of us a book for our math level. We were told to do the review chapters and questions so he could figure out where we were at and how much we remembered.
We had a 15 minute break before going to Miss Dorris' room for science at 8:45. She had a stack of textbooks for high school level science books. She told us to vote on which one to use and said we will eventually get through them over the next few years if we don't age out to soon. We voted for biology by one vote. I'm glad because I think that it will be more useful with my independent studies. She is also teaching english grammar and writing. She is going to have us write a 2 page page report on whatever topic we are covering in science or history every week, and base our english grade off of that.
Miss Yates was at 10:30. She said we would survey modern world history for the seniors this year and we will do Ancient Civilizations, World History and American History over the next 3 years.
We only briefly saw Sashas class of little kids. Mrs Nunez is helping her with them. I caught a brief glimpse of her classroom and she has put a lot of effort into making it cheerful and bright.
The dating pool is bigger but I don't think I want to swim in it. I had an unpleasant run in with Jason and his friends. I guess they didn't get the memo that Jude isn't mine and cornered me in the halls. Since I have one baby, they assumed that I put out and we do have to rebuild humanity after all.
He didn't touch me, but he was very insistent that I give him a chance to try out for "baby daddy number two." Maybe hang out, go for a walk and "get to know each other" as he put it as he wiggled his eyebrows and gave me a very evaluating look up and down. I declined. He just made me feel icky. Probably because he came on so strong and ignored me when I tried to explain things.
I was so glad Merle showed up when he did. He checks the halls frequently for ill that may have wandered out from somewhere, or in. I don't know how long he was listening to the exchange. He was just suddenly there telling me that "Officer Friendly" needed me to take his daughter for a bit and that Maggie was looking for me, so I ought to run along while he had a heart to heart with "these fine gentlemen".
I was baffled that Maggie would ask Merle to give me any kind of message, but was glad to leave. Rick handed Jude over to me, but seemed surprised to see me so soon. Surprised and relieved. Jude had been inconsolable and refused her bottle all morning. She was screaming her face red until I took her. She was still crying but not as loudly or as forcefully.
Maggie had no idea what I was talking about and said Merle was the last person she would send a message through. She would never send "that redneck piece of trash" anywhere near me. I guess he was just trying to get rid of me. I really appreciate it. He can be sure crass, but I think it's just to hide that deep down, he's a good man.
I spent my lunch consoling Judith. She cried most of the time I was at school this morning. Carrol assured me that it is just separation anxiety and that she will do better tomorrow. I hope so, she had quit crying by the time lunch was over but her lips were still quivering occasionally when I handed her back to Rick. I heard her start screaming as I was ducking into the tombs. She was still crying when class was over and it took two hours to get her to calm down enough to eat when school was finally over.
The Woodbury group in block A will have an election tonight after dinner. Block B is having theirs tomorrow morning. Its kind of weird how each block is going to have their own set of internal rules, like individual states.

5 days without anyone getting hurt
I'm thinking about starting a new qi gong routine. The book has exercises specifically for particular issues. I am going to add self message and some exercises for anxiety. I will think about it and start the modified routine Monday.
Breakfast was pancakes and syrup. I really want to go out berry picking and maybe dig up shoots to plant along the fences. I want to see if maybe I can train it up the chain link. My real purpose is to find out if the ill will stop running into the fence if they can't see us. I also want to use the berries to make berry syrup for the pancakes our cooks seem to like to make for breakfast.
School was interesting I suppose. I am starting pre calculus and I did okay. Modern history isn't starting out very modern. We started with a quick rundown on the fall of the Roman empire and the effect it had on Europe and civilization. Miss Yates is actually very interesting to listen to.
We are starting with scientific process and terms, measurement and other stuff. I understand why we have to review it, but honestly, every year, the science books all start with this. I get that its important but so is being able to read, and the book assumes we can do that so couldn't the authors just get to important stuff. I guess it wasn't so bad though, I brought my bag with me and when I finished my assignments I was able to pull out my own books to study. All in all not so bad.
Jason apologized for his behavior yesterday, and for jumping to conclusions. He then asked me to go for a walk along the fences with him, in a slightly more tactful way. I declined, and was immediately called a frigid I am not interested and told him that. He went off on a rant about how I would end up old and alone. He just didn't put it as nicely. It was hard to sit in Mr West's classroom for study hall. I was so relieved when I saw that my assignment was in the gardens rather than the fences.
I picked Jude up from Carrol to strap on and take to the garden with me. She is not liking being away from me at all. I checked on her at lunch and she was hoarse from the crying. I can't make her do that three days in a row. I think I'm going to bring her to class with me. It can't be healthy for her to scream that much and it's definitely disturbing everyone else. Most people have been spending the better part of a year trying to be as quiet as possible. To listen to a baby crying loudly all morning is causing some people to have panic and anxiety issues. The other reason I'm going to have to take her with me is that she's been crying too hard to eat and what she did eat, she threw up from crying so hard. It's unsustainable. Daddy and Rick agree with me and so we will try again in six months.
Once she had calmed, had a bottle and a change I set out for the gardens. I weeded around the squash and bean plants with Betty and Jordan. I just listened while they exchanged stories about their families' gardens during the Great War. The air was warm, and the breezes felt cool on my skin. When Jude finally went to sleep, I managed to lay the sling on the grass and lay her down without her waking. The Betty and Julie just oohed and awed at her. I think she's collecting grandparents like baseball cards.
Michone is back from her search for the Governor. She had no new leads but she did find a friend of sorts. A buckskin stallion. She was riding bare back with a couple of back packs tied together and slung across his withers and a few old towels for cushioning. We'll have to find him a good saddle with bags.
That is a problem for another day. Maybe tomorrow.
