Chapter 6: A Threat Escalates

The next day at the precinct, things took a darker turn. Maria arrived to find a letter waiting for her on her desk, the handwriting instantly recognizable. It was another threat from Vega.

This time, the message was clear: I'm closer than you think, Detective Baez. You'll pay for what you did.

Maria's stomach twisted with fear and anger. She had dealt with threats before—being a detective came with its risks—but this was different. Vega was taunting her, and it was only a matter of time before he made his move.

Danny was by her side immediately, reading the note over her shoulder. His expression darkened, and Maria could see the fire in his eyes. "That's it. We're not waiting around anymore. We're going to find this guy and put him away for good."

Maria nodded, but her mind was racing. Vega was playing a dangerous game, and she couldn't shake the feeling that he was watching her—waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

They doubled down on their efforts, pulling every lead, every contact they had. The precinct was on high alert, and Danny's protective instincts kicked into overdrive. He stayed closer to Maria than ever, refusing to let her out of his sight.

But despite their efforts, Vega remained elusive, always one step ahead.

As the days went on, Maria found herself growing more and more anxious. The threats were getting bolder, more specific. She knew it was only a matter of time before Vega made his move. And when he did, she wasn't sure if she'd be ready.

But through it all, Danny was there—her constant, her protector, her friend. And despite everything, despite the fear and the danger, Maria found herself leaning on him more than she ever had before.

She wasn't sure what that meant for them. But one thing was certain: she wasn't alone anymore. And no matter what Vega threw at her, she knew that with Danny by her side, she could face whatever came next.
