Chapter 20

Ash racked his brain for ideas as Skye blocked a Flamethrower with a Water Gun. Anything, even… was that a metal pipe on the wall? "Skye, Aqua Tail! Launch yourself up!"

"Houndoom, use Crunch."

"Grab the pipe and swing!"

Sensing Ash's plan, Skye latched her tail on a metal pole and used it as a pivot point, causing Houndoom's Crunch to hit nothing but air.

"Now Aqua Tail!"

Still in mid-air, Houndoom couldn't dodge the attack and was struck down by the super-effective hit.

"You think that's enough to defeat Houndoom?" Nigel smirked. "Use Sunny Day."

Ash tensed up. Sunny Day was a move that boosted fire-type moves while weakening water-type moves, which would leave Skye at a huge disadvantage. "Quick, Water Gun!" Ash yelled.

The Water Gun hit its mark, knocking the dark and fire type to the ground again. But before Ash could relax he was greeted by bright rays of light streaming from the ceiling.

It was time to switch tactics. "Skye, electric! Use Thunderbolt!"

Skye's amulet glowed as she switched to her Jolteon form before firing a large lightning bolt at Houndoom.

"Fire Spin."

A large blast of fire ripped through the Thunderbolt and shot toward Skye.

"Quick, dodge!"

Skye leaped to the side, narrowly avoiding the boosted fire-type move.

"Lock on."

Houndoom focused its eyes on Skye, forming a red and white target around her.

"Hey!" said Ash, "Houndoom can't use that move!"

"Like I said," replied Nigel, "my dark Pokemon don't follow the rules of regular Pokemon. What may be impossible for your Pokemon, is very possible for mine." He gave an evil grin. Time to end this, Houndoom, use Flamethrower."

As the fire-type move shot toward Skye, an idea hit Ash. "Skye, normal! Use Dig!"

Skye quickly switched to her Eevee form, tunneling down just before the attack would have hit.

"You've only delayed your defeat, use Nasty Plot," Nigel ordered.

Houndoom stood still as it charged up energy, increasing its attack power.

"Alright Skye, come out from the wall and dig right back in the ground," said Ash telepathically.

A few seconds later, Skye shot out straight from the wall, ramming into the dark and fire type before it could react and digging straight back into the ground. Before Houndoom could recover, it was hit repeatedly by a blur of brown fur until, battered from the super-effective attacks, Houndoom slumped over, its strength nearly gone.

"What do you suggest we do?" asked Professor Oak.

"We need to keep going," said Professor Birch, "if what the prophecy says is true, Ash, and all of us, could be in grave danger,"

"What do you mean?" asked Brock, "Are you saying Ash won't be able to defeat team Void?"

"I'm only telling you what I think the prophecy says," replied Professor Birch, "I don't remember all of it, but part of it says:

The Chosen has the power to win,

But be warned, the battle is not won.

As evil's greed commits a sin,

The Chosen alone cannot shun.

Before the world can be saved,

Before the Chosen saves.

A singular wish must be made,

In Hoenn's ancient caves."

"So we have to make a wish?" asked Misty.

"Precisely." said Professor Brich, "And I may have an idea how to do it,"

"Are you referring to the Wish Pokemon?" asked Professor Oak.

"Yes, I think it lives somewhere around here," Professor Birch beamed his flashlight around him. "The question is where…"

"It looks like we're going to have to get through there first," Professor Oak gestured to a mossy stone maze on the other side of the room. "Shall we?"

"If it's the only to help Ash, I'm in," said Brock.

"Same here," said Misty, "you ready Togepi?"

The little Pokemon made a happy trilling sound in Misty's arms.

"Be quiet James!" scolded Jessie, "You'll ruin our surprise!"

"The twerp's Eevee got dirt all over me," complained James, brushing dust off his hair and clothes.

"Well what do you expect?" asked Meowth, "We're underground, so obviously da twerp's going to use that to his advantage. With a little digging, that Eevee can come out of anywhere."

"Did I see it evolve twice?" said Jessie, "I'm pretty sure Eevee can't do that,"

James pulled a small book out of his pocket and flipped through the pages, stopping on one that showed a picture of an Eevee. "Eevee can evolve into 8 different forms; Vaporeon, Jolteon Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon." He shut the book. "That amulet has something to do with it. Did you notice that it glowed every time the Eevee evolved?"

"Come to think of it, I did," said Meowth.

The trio looked at each other.

"Imagine what we could do with that amulet," said Jessie.

"We could give it to the boss as a birthday present," said James.

"And once he found its true power, he would say 'Ah, what I wouldn't give to those three who gave me this wonderful amulet,'" sighed Mewoth.

The Team Rocket members stood, dreamy-eyed, imagining how Giovanni would reward them.

"Hold up, we're supposed to be helping the twerp right now!" said Jessie, snapping back into reality.

"Yeah, if we don't stop Team Void there might not be an amulet to take!" said Meowth.

"What are we waiting for?" asked James, "Let's get back to work!"

"Wobbuffet!" cried Wobbuffet, breaking out from its Pokeball.

"Skye, Water! Use Water Gun!" Ash yelled, hoping to finish Houndoom off.

Skye leaped into the air and shot a volley of water at the dark and fire type.

"Flamethrower."

The large burst of flame instantly dried up the water, forcing Skye to leap out of the way before the attack could hit her.

"Flamethrower again."

"Use Hydro Pump!"

Skye's amulet glowed again as she switched to her Vaporeon form and shot a torrent of water at the oncoming flames. Despite her efforts, the Flamethrower broke through the water, slamming her into the wall.

"Skye!" Ash ran to Skye, who had switched back to Eevee form. "Are you ok?"

Skye weakly opened her eyes. "I-I'll be ok," she said before slumping onto the ground.

"You did amazing, take a nice long rest," said Ash, returning Skye to her Pokeball.

"Ready Latios?" asked Ash telepathically.

"Let's do this!"

"Alright, go Latios!" said Ash.

Latios turned visible in a shower of light and flew forward, letting out a battle cry.

Nigel smirked, "I've been waiting to fight one of your legendaries. Alright Houndoom, use Explosion."

"Quick, Protect!" said Ash.

Latios hastily set up a barrier as the Houndoom blew up, creating a huge crater and launching dust over the battlefield.

"Latios! Are you ok?" Ash called through the cloud of dust.

"I'm fine," said Latios, "I was able to block most of the explosion,"

Once the dust cleared, Nigel withdrew his knocked-out Pokemon and tossed another Pokeball. "Go, Kangaskhan!"
