A Mobster's Dynasty

Chapter One: Desiring Sin

Bella Cullen

Being born into this family was being born a legend in the making.

In this city, the name Cullen meant power. Respect. And no one dared cross me.

But that was about to change.

I walked down the polished corridor of my father's estate with purpose for it was on this day everything was set to begin.

The heir to our family power, the eldest son and my brother Edward Cullen was getting out of prison after serving ten years for second degree murder. I hadn't seen him since I was eight years old, he was ten years my senior, I can still remember how terse and serious he was even at such a young age. He had been groomed as the heir apparent long before I'd ever thought about joining the family business.

The Cullen Empire wasn't just your everyday, run-of-the-mill crime syndicate; no this family ruled over every illegal enterprise in this city. Our influence reached far and wide into the police force, the mayor's office, even all the way to Washington DC. There was no one that my family didn't own and as such, there were only two types of people in this city – those who bowed to us, and those who cowered before us.

I was born into privilege; everything I ever wanted was given to me and my siblings. Edward was the first born from my father's marriage to Esme my step mother, then Emmett and Jasper following within the next four years and after a brutal miscarriage following a car wreck my father like most men of his influence began having affairs. My mother Renee was working for Esme at one of her spa's when my father began his affair with her. When she got pregnant with me my father moved her into his home and Esme threatened to leave him.

When my father Carlisle told her the boys would be remaining with him Esme agreed to stay but their marriage was never the same again. She withdrew from him and I knew she resented me because of it, my brothers seemed to tolerate me well enough but Edward always seemed cold toward me. My father however gave me no love, compassion or even respect for I was his only daughter and he had expected, some may even say demanded a son.

However my mother loved me unconditionally; she tried to give me as normal a childhood as possible despite my family history and connections. But there is no escaping the Cullen name it's practically synonymous with crime in this city, growing up people feared me before they knew who I was. I had only a handful of people in my life that I trusted beyond my family members; Alice Brandon my best friend since kindergarten and my other friend Jessica also from school.

I hadn't grown up like most girls, I was never allowed to sleep over at friends houses or go to birthday parties, my father didn't believe in such things. He felt children needed to grow up in order to understand the world they would inherit and so my life consisted of tutors, private tutoring and strict discipline.

When I was set to begin high school my mother had become furious with my father over his decision to place me in an all girl school in Europe. I'd listened from upstairs as they fought, my mother even believed Edward had say in his decision even from prison. Apparently my older brother had been adamant that I was to be placed in a Catholic School where I could be watched over by nuns until I turned eighteen. My mother argued that Edward was still serving a ten year sentence for killing someone and that he had no right to make such decisions for me. But Edward had power even behind steel bars and my father respected his opinion far more than my mothers.

And so I was sent away.

My education in Europe had been eye opening to say the least; there was never a moment of quiet reflection or peace. The girls were cruel and I was an outcast. I studied hard and kept to myself, Alice was my lifeline over there as we wrote each other regularly keeping us both sane throughout the duration of our time at St. Agnes Catholic Girls Academy. When I wrote to Alice about my plans to run away from the school her letters stopped and within twenty four hours a fax from King's Mount Maximum Security Prison arrived informing Mother Superior of my plans that I discovered Edward had been receiving copies of all my correspondence to Alice since I'd left for Europe.

For the next month I scrubbed floors, toilets, did laundry, anything to keep me off Mother Superior's radar. The work was tiresome, it was endless but it was nothing compared to what awaited me back home.

The day I graduated I attended the ceremony and within the next hour I had been provided with my passport and I was on the first plane back to the States that same morning. I learned a lot at St. Agnes' Catholic Girls Academy but most importantly I learned that I could not trust anyone, even those closest to me.

Edward's release from prison today marked a new chapter for our family. There was a clear line of succession which meant Emmett and Jasper would have to watch themselves when dealing with our family. I on the other hand was marking today as a new chapter in my life away from my family. With Edward coming home I was sure a chain reaction of events would take place which meant I would be under much closer scrutiny which meant now was the time to go.

When I awoke that morning I was served breakfast in bed by my assistant who went through my iCalendar as I ate going over my schedule for the day. Everything about today revolved around Edward's release which meant everyone was attending including myself whether I liked it or not. Taylor Brooks was the Chief of Household Security and Cora Crewson was Chief of Household Staff, both of whom had our staff running around like headless chickens readying everything for Edwards arrival.

Over the past seventy two hours I had watched staff, waxing all of the cars, cleaning every inch of the house until it gleamed. The lawns were mowed and landscaped until you couldn't tell them apart from the golf course outside our gates. Cora even went so far as to send everyone shopping for new clothes, everything I owned had been replaced, the shoes, dresses, lingerie, even the underwear had been purchased for me. I wasn't allowed to choose any of it and Cora knew if I had my way I would have worn jeans, sneakers and a t-shirt.

Cora Crewson was my fathers mistress; she had worked for Esme as a personal shopper before Carlisle noticed her and appointed her my Chief of Household Staff. Her job was to run this household like a five star hotel making sure everything was perfect. She was paid handsomely for her services and Cora knew that one wrong move would see her fired like anyone else.

Edward's bedroom had been given a complete overhaul since he last occupied it, everything had been redecorated and even expanded. My father had brought in designers, interior decorators and even a Feng Shui expert to make sure Edwards room was exactly how he wanted it to be for his eldest sons return. Last night I watched as his new suits, shirts, shoes, watches, ties and cufflinks were delivered, all of them designer, expensive and perfectly tailored for him I imagined.

I had spent the morning being pampered; my hair, nails, makeup and even my eyebrows had been taken care of. Cora had scheduled me in for a full body waxing where I was literally stripped bare, before being dressed by my stylist who picked out my dress for Edwards release.

"Is all of this necessary?" I asked Cora as she and two others fussed around me as I sat in front of my vanity.

"It is a big day Miss Cullen." Cora said as she fluffed my curls and pinned them away from my face. "Your brother will expect to see perfection from every member of this house hold including yourself. You are his sister after all; he will expect nothing but the best from you."

"Half sister." I corrected.

"Forgive me." Cora apologized. "This is the finished look we decided on yes?" She asked as she held up a mirror behind me.

I nodded looking at my reflection.

"Very well." She said handing me my Jimmy Choo's to put on.

I turned my back to her "A moment. Please." I requested.

Cora motioned for everyone to leave leaving her alone with me.

"Yes Miss Cullen?" She asked.

"Did my father ask you to do this for me? The hair, the dress, the waxing?" I asked her.

Cora looked uncomfortable as she smoothed out my shoulders. "He expects perfection from every member of staff Miss Cullen."

I shook my head. "So that's a yes then." I stated.

Cora looked at me in the reflection of my vanity mirror.

I stood up and adjusted my dress. "You're dismissed." I told her.

She bowed her head slightly. "Yes Miss Cullen."

Cora left and I went to my walk in closet where I found the small duffle bag I had packed containing my new passport, new ID's and my cash. I ensured everything was prepared as I would have to leave now to go to the prison.

There was a knock on my bedroom door and I left my closet quickly making sure my door was locked and concealing my duffle bag with the rest of my luggage.

I opened the door to find Emmett standing there dressed in an Armani suit.

"So this is why I wasn't allowed to wear my black Armani skirt" I said motioning to his outfit.

Emmett smiled "Father's orders. We're all required to look the part today, even you. Shall we?" He asked offering me his arm.

I took it as we walked downstairs to meet Jasper who was waiting for us near the front entrance. He too was wearing an Armani suit.

Taylor Brooks stood nearby watching everyone. He was responsible for our personal security and he ensured none of us left the house without him.

Esme arrived next wearing Chanel from head to toe followed by my father Carlisle who wore a Tom Ford suit. Cora and a few members of staff came down shortly after with my mother arriving last.

"You're late." Carlisle informed her as he checked his watch.

My mother Renee looked stunning in a Roberto Cavalli dress with her hair up in an elegant chignon.

Carlisle walked over to her and whispered something into her ear before kissing her cheek and walking away from her.

Esme attempted to take my father's arm as they left but Carlisle brushed her off walking out of the house with Taylor and the rest of our security team following him.

It wasn't until we stood outside his limo that he turned to face us.

"This is a monumental day for our family; we stand united as a family today. Edward's release marks a new era for our family, he will once again resume his place as heir apparent and he will be treated with the respect he deserves. Any form of disrespect toward him or any Cullen for that matter will not be tolerated. Am I understood?" Carlisle asked.

Everyone murmured their agreements.

It was then my father looked to me.

"Where is her coat?" He asked Cora.

Before Cora could answer I spoke up.

"I don't need it." I told him.

Carlisle reached for my arm pulling me to the side.

"Do as I say. Now." He hissed before ordering Cora to get my coat for me.

Carlisle turned back to the group. "Now let us proceed." He said as he got into the limo followed by Esme and my mother.

Jasper and Emmett climbed into the second limo while Cora and Taylor helped me into my coat before getting into the third limo.

Cora returned to our limo a few minutes later with my chinchilla coat for me.

"Thank you." I told her.

"Of course Miss Cullen." Cora said.

Emmett rubbed his cheek as the door was closed "You're too polite to the staff." He commented.

I shrugged "Why shouldn't I be polite to the people who work for us? We'd be nowhere without them."

Emmett shook his head. "They are here to serve us; they work for us remember that."

"Enough." Jasper said his eyes not lifting from his phone.

Our house was a mile away from the city and five miles to the private airstrip my father owned which had two fuelled jets on standby for us at all times.

This morning however there was an additional black jet stationed inside the hangar which caught my attention.

"What is that?"

"What do you think?" Jasper asked again not looking up from his screen.

"It seems the heir has treated himself already." Emmett said smiling.

"That jet belongs to Edward?" I asked.

Emmett nodded.

"How can he buy a jet from behind bars?"

"Money talks Bella." Jasper said finally putting his phone away. "His attorney pulled some strings and a certain warden was compensated well for his...cooperation shall we say."

When we pulled up in front of the private jet I watched Taylor and two other men check the plane and ensure it was safe before allowing us to board.

When we boarded we were attended immediately, with my father and my mother disappearing into the back of the plane while Esme went to the front leaving Emmett, Jasper and I seated together.

Once air born Cora brought me a glass of champagne but I declined it.

"Thank you Cora but I don't drink."

"Your father insists." She said handing me the flute.

I accepted the glass knowing it was pointless to argue with her.

When she turned her back to us I handed Emmett the glass and he immediately downed it.

Emmett licked his lips and smacked his mouth "Chateau Mouton Rothschild. 1945 vintage. Father certainly is spoiling Edward."

He handed me back and glass and I sighed.

"Relax," Emmett told me "Edward can smell nerves a mile away."

I raised my hand for one of the flight attendants who took the glass from me.

"Could I please get like a book or something to read?" I asked.

The attendant nodded "Yes Miss Cullen."

Jasper leaned over and patted my leg "Try and relax. All this nervous energy isn't good for anyone, least of all you."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

Jasper and Emmett exchanged a look.

"Nothing." Jasper said.

"No what is it?"

Emmett shrugged "Let's be honest he doesn't exactly like yo-"

"Emmett" Jasper warned through his tone was firm.

Emmett rolled his eyes. "Fine."

I was brought a book and a blanket which I curled up underneath with, I tried to read but I was far too anxious to focus on anything. I counted the seconds in my head as we flew to Edward's release.

When I wasn't counting I wondered what he would be like? Would he look the same as he did when I saw him last? How would he act toward me?

Carlisle was the only person to visit Edward during his time in prison and I often wondered what they talked about? Did he talk about me? What kind of man had he become behind bars?

My brothers and step mother weren't even allowed to visit him. Edward didn't want to see anyone apparently including me, whenever I asked Carlisle about him he would simply say; he's fine.

I felt the plane land and I clutched my seat as we touched down. Cora was quick to attend to Esme first, sliding on her fur coat which was made of white fox before assisting my mother with hers.

Jasper and Emmett stood up adjusting their jackets.

"Remember what father said." Jasper reminded me.

I nodded.

We disembarked from the plane and were ushered into another limo where again I was alone with my brothers.

As we drove to the prison Emmett turned to me.

"You ready?"

I shook my head. "Not at all."

"What even happens to a person after being locked away for ten years?" I asked.

"Edward Cullen," Emmett said "Will be exactly the same except, just ten years older."

Jasper shook his head "You know that's not true Emmett."

"It is though. Edward was a cold hearted sociopath before prison just imagine what he'll be like now."

I frowned "A sociopath?"

Emmett nodded "Cold. Unfeeling. Dead inside. No empathy whatsoever."

Jasper smacked Emmett upside the head.

"Ow." Emmett exclaimed.

"Enough!" Jasper ordered.

When we pulled up outside King's Mount Maximum Security Prison the limo's pulled into position outside the gates. A few minutes later Taylor got out from one of the SUVs and began to look around before he spoke into his sleeve and other members of his team began to spread out around our cars. Taylor of course opened the door to our father's limo first before ours.

Carlisle emerged and adjusted his suit looking around before Taylor went to open our car door.

I waited for Emmett and Jasper to leave before I stepped out of the limo.

A gust of wind hit me and I shivered.

Chewing gum Emmett pulled his arm over my shoulder as he slid on his rimless Dior sunglasses.

I looked around the prison yard taking in the barbwire fences, the heavily armed guards and the fact that we were standing in the middle of nowhere.

"Holy shit" I couldn't help but whisper.

"What did you expect?" Emmett asked me.

Carlisle walked over to us and Emmett dropped his arm from around me.

"Remember what I said. Be respectful." Carlisle told us.

Esme came to his side then "She shouldn't be here, I am your wife and she-" Esme began.

"Renee is the mother of my daughter. She deserves to be here, now stop." Carlisle said brushing her off.

Carlisle looked to Taylor who signaled to him that it was clear.

They walked away from us and Jasper took out a cigar lighting it as he stood beside Emmett who produced one for himself.

"I didn't expect it to look so..." I began.

"What?" Emmett asked.

"Big."

Jasper chuckled.

A buzzer sounded then stinging my ears so bad that I had to shield them.

"Here he comes." Emmett said before he and Jasper got rid of their cigars.

"Wait already?" I asked confused.

Jasper shook his head "They were expecting us."

The large steel gates began to open ahead of us, there standing in the centre of them was my half brother Edward Cullen.

He was flanked by four prison guards as they escorted him out of the prison towards us each of them carrying riffles and not taking their eyes off Edward until he crossed the line.

He didn't look our way at all he kept his eyes focused dead ahead. There was no orange jumpsuit or cuffs either, he was wearing a suit and not just any suit. It was Tom Ford tailored specifically for him. His shoes were Gucci, his belt was Saint Laurent and his cufflinks were Tiffany's. I swallowed nervously as I took him in; he was tall with broad shoulders, copper coloured hair that he wore short and styled with product. His features were sharp, his jaw line strong and his nose straight. He moved forward toward us and I could see he was lean but muscular under his suit.

When Edward crossed the yellow line painted onto the concrete he stopped and turned to look back at the guards one of whom actually flinched as Edward stared them down.

Emmett blew out a breath "Shit."

Edward turned back to all of us and began to head in our direction.

"Son" Our father greeted with a smile walking over to Edward with open arms.

Edward instead shook his hand and I clocked the new tattoo stretched across his right hand in result.

My father motioned to Esme who came forward and hugged Edward.

"You look well." Esme commented as she looked over him.

"Ten years does that to a man." Carlisle said.

My mother did the right thing and didn't approach instead Edward's eyes drifted over to Emmett and Jasper as if I wasn't even there.

"Brothers." Edward said extending his hand to Emmett first who accepted and embraced him before shaking Jasper's hand.

"Fuck me look at the ink, and the fuckin arms." Emmett said to him noting his ink and intense muscular development.

Emmett was right; up until now, he had been the strongest in the family, even more so than Carlisle. But Edward had surpassed Emmett; he was not just toned, but sculpted from years of what had to be relentless discipline and arduous training.

Edward's smirk was tantalizing, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath catch. I stood there, mesmerized, as Edward closed the distance between us. When I finally looked up into his piercing green eyes, a delicious shiver ran down my spine, my heart fluttering wildly. He was a force of nature; towering over most by a full foot, his broad shoulders and chiseled physique radiated raw power. Every sinew and muscle sculpted to perfection, he moved with a commanding grace. His presence was electric, exuding an intoxicating blend of confidence and control that was impossible to ignore.

"Isabella" Edward greeted as he leaned down kissing my cheek.

I inhaled his cologne and turned my head towards his lips catching both of us off guard.

"Edward." I replied my voice coming out smaller than I intended.

I felt everyone staring at us as we stood together and I cleared my throat.

"Get in the car. We have a lot to discuss." Carlisle said behind us then.

While everyone else walked away Edward stayed with me and I felt the intensity of his gaze as he looked me over.

"How old are you now Isabella?"

"You can just call me Bella I don't mind."

"How old?" Edward asked again ignoring my statement.

"I'm eighteen now." I answered.

"Good."

"Good?"

Edward's eyes met mine and he nodded. "Yes. Good."

"I don't understand."

"You will."

With that Edward walked away from me leaving me standing there utterly confused.

One day out of prison and he's already playing mind games.
