Charlie packed food toppers into baskets for her date with Vaggie, as she waited for her to arrive while making sure she had everything she would need.
"Aight, food? Check. Tablecloth? Check. My camera? Check…" she continued listing with a version of herself in her mind, checking everything she named in a notebook. "Stink? I don't smell so bad am I? "
"Nah I say we're fine," Said her version of herself inside her mind and they high fived imaginatively, but when she raised her arm she smelled herself and her eyes almost cried out as if she had cut several onions.
She speed-showered in deodorant and perfume for the second time that afternoon, shortly after returning to the kitchen with the baskets, she heard a knock on the door.
She reached the door and when she opened it, she found her partner.
"Vaggie!" She greeted her with a smile, then gave her a hug and a quick kiss on her cheek.
Vaggie opened her mouth to speak, but stoop up there silent and mute, until she realized Charlie was shaking her shoulders slightly.
"Hello there? Earth calling Vaggie? " Vaggie finally woke up rubbing her eyes for a moment.
"I ... I'm sorry, you look beautiful," she said with a slight blush on her face.
"Oh please! Either way, that would make us two beautiful girls, don't you think?" Charlie said laughing at her and bumped her hip against Vaggie's, causing the blush on her face to grow more.
"You-no-I mean," she locked with her tongue before pausing for a moment to compose herself. "I mean, are you ready to go?"
"Well, you were a little early and—"
"Oh no…"
"But if you want we can go right now!" She corrected right away. Vaggie just nodded. "Great, just give me a minute. Why don't you wait inside?" Charlie ushered him inside and closed the door. "I'll be right back."
Vaggie stood waiting right at the entrance, fearful and nervous to dare to wander around. Just next to the small hall of the door there was a photo of Charlie and her parents. She could appreciate the features Charlie had inherited from them. The figure and hair of her mother. The eyes and smile of her father.
"Something catches your attention, my dear?
Speak of the devil...
Vaggie jumped up before turning behind her to find Charlie's father sitting on the living room couch with a pipe in hand. When did he get there?
"Mister Magne. I didn't hear it coming. "
"Oh please, you know you can call me 'Lucy'," he said with a smile before laughing. Vaggie giggled with him just so she didn't appear awkward.
"But seriously, I know I've told you before, but I really appreciate you going out with my daughter. The poor thing has not had much luck with her partners."
She didn't know if she would relax because of it. "Well, I must admit, the first time I met you I thought you didn't–"
"Wouldn't support your relationship? Why I'd do that? My daughter likes women, another thing we have in common," Lucifer said before laughing out loud again. "Aha-Hahaha-haha-ha. Oh, finally get that out of my system." He laughed as he wiped a few small tears from her eyes with his index finger.
Charlie approached them with baskets in hand and he handed one to Vaggie. "Thanks for waiting," she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and turned to Lucifer. "We're leaving, Pa."
"Have fun, come back late."
They left the house and got into Vaggie's truck, put the baskets in the back seat and drove off.
"So, how did you go with the audition? Vaggie asked at the wheel.
"Oh well, it wasn't too bad for me," she said as she played with her hair and Vaggie glanced at her. "No, really, I mean it! Miss Killjoy said I did it meh, like always," she said with an exaggerated tone. "But she privately told me that if I continue as well as always, she would give me a chance with the auditions that are coming up in a week," Charlie continued speaking while Vaggie smiled inwardly happily at the idea of Charlie's dreams coming true.
Charlie gave him directions of where to go from time to time, until they took a detour and turned off the road and continued on dirt roads. Vaggie drove her truck into the woods to the end of an open area and from there they were to continue on foot.
"Wow," Vaggie blurted out. "This place looks beautiful. No wonder you didn't want to tell me. "
"I knew you'd love it."
Before getting out, Vaggie purposely lingered inside the car until Charlie got out of the truck and while she wasn't looking, Vaggie reached under his seat and pulled out a small blue package and hid it inside his basket.
As Vaggie got out of the truck, Vaggie could see the place around her, tall, thin birch trees that rose to the point that they almost covered the sky with their multicolor leaves, letting through many small rays of light.
As they walk through the forest, every leave rustled with each step they took. Charlie was talking about how her parents used to bring her to this place when she was a kid and old childhood memories.
As they went further, they encountered more animals in the vicinity. Squirrels that fled as soon as they saw them or birds that simply flew away.
The sound of flowing water alerted them to a river ahead. Vaggie walked a little further to discover a wide river. Luckily for her, there was a narrow stone path that allowed them to cross to the other side.
"We are almost there," Charlie said. After crossing the river and the two of them almost fell into the water, they reached a small hill that they climbed and at the top they found a tree where they settled under its shade, and placed a tablecloth and began their picnic.
"Did you bring what I asked for?" Vaggie asked as she checked her basket
Charlie didn't answer and she waited for her to discover the little surprise she had prepared for him. She was actually too small, maybe in the end if it was a silly idea and it wasn't worth the-
"Is this…?"
Charlie's smile grew to encompass her entire face, as usual.
"Do you remember that time you told me about your home?" Well, I thought you sooo missed it. So I brought you something that could make you feel at, well, home. "
Vaggie took a closer look at what Charlie were pupusas and riguas, typical food from her home country. Food that she had not literally seen since she left there, years ago.
"My home?"
"Yeah, you know, the other day you talked about before I met you, and I thought, well, maybe you missed your home."
"Did you remember? Heh." Her face drew the outline of a slight smile, before she fell into an empty and distant expression. "I was just babbling and stuff. Thanks, Charlie, but you wouldn't have bothered. "
"Do you…do you miss your home? I don't know, your family maybe?"
Vaggie's breath hitched for a moment at such a direct question, she waited for Charlie to mull it over for a while, time she would usually use to prepare her answer.
"I ... that doesn't matter," she said, avoiding Charlie, looking at her from the corner of her eye, and when she saw her expression, she discovered that she still had doubts to ask, so she was ahead of him. "That reminds me, I brought you something."
She took out a gift-wrapped package from her backpack and handed it to Charlie.
The pupils of Charlie's eyes grew to stars as she let out an excited squeak.
In a couple of seconds she almost opened the gift, but froze instantly at the sight of Vaggie's gaze on her.
"Too soon, right?"
"No, no, go ahead, I want to see your reaction."
Charlie finished unwrapping the gift and found a photo frame from one of their first dates, where they went skiing on an ice lake in winter, with fireworks decorating the background of the photo, while Charlie wrapped Vaggie on an arm so strong it lifted her off the ground.
Charlie smiled at the photo and the memory it brought back, but it was an unusual smile for her, a silent smile, for herself, even private, but that did not take away everything she felt inside herself.
A kind of smile that she reminded her of ...
"It's...beautiful, Vaggie, I love it."
Memories of her floated through her mind the more she saw the photo, and eventually, her mind flew to the time before she met Vaggie.
Those times were…hectic, to say the least. She had broken up with her last boyfriend, had quarreled with her family about her future, and since they wanted her to follow what they said, Charlie knew her parents loved her above all else, but sometimes it was just as if did not believe in her, which made her doubt her for a long time, and even considered abandoning her passion for singing and basically everything related to art.
In the midst of all her personal chaos, Vaggie arrived and to this day, she still didn't manage understand how Vaggie managed to help her turn her life upside down. And now she could enjoy this wonderful sight with even more wonderful company.
The two ended up lying next to each other watching the blue sky turn from blue to orange, while the sun was on the horizon, and the wind lightly blew her hair.
"It is so pretty!" Charlie blurted out. "Oh! Let's take a picture! "
"Thought you would never ask," She responded, getting up for a moment to grab Charlie's mochia and take the camera out of it before handing it over, Charlie took it and pulled Vaggie closer to her to the point where the cheeks of her faces were rubbing each other.
At one point, Vaggie felt Charlie's hand go up her leg, up to her stomach, Vaggie just thought it was once again the typical playful attitude of Charlie and she ignored it. But when Charlie got up from her place for a second, Vaggie still felt that same hand creep up her body, her sense of alertness shot out and she was up in an instant, and she saw that it was a squirrel climbing her body.
She immediately stood up with a start as she let out a short, high-pitched scream. Vaggie shook it off her by shaking her clothes off as fast as she could.
To the surprise of both of them, instead of the squirrel running back to the forest, she sought refuge with Charlie, and unlike Vaggie, Charlie got up and put her on his lap while stroking her small head with remarkable ease.
"Vaggie! Take us a picture!"
Although Vaggie used to go along with her, as one of the things she loved about Charlie was her spontaneity, it was customary for her to do so reluctantly. That furry creature made her nervous and her body tensed at the sight of it.
"Take a deep breath, Vaggie, take a deep breath," she said to herself and took the photo of her.
The flash scared the squirrel and it ran off. "Uhhh, it was cute." Charlie whined with a disappointed face.
Vaggie sighed in relief that that was over and she passed the photo to her partner. Charlie looked longingly at the photo.
Suddenly her face lit up.
"We should adopt a dog! Or two! "
"Oh no."
