I didn't know what I was expecting to find once Klea and I made it to the pier. It was not like there was going to be a man tossing anyone off a boat. "Klea this is dumb" I said, "Max where is your detective side I mean come on you have had more practice than I did and you are backing out on me" she said. "Trust me getting my ass kicked by a man twice my size was not fun, and I had no idea what I was doing" I said, "no you knew what you were doing Max" Klea said. She was just trying to make me feel better, I wasn't sure what was going on I felt off, and my head was foggy, I didn't want to think I was getting sick I told myself I wouldn't. "OH my god Max look!" Klea said, I saw it too, their was a man tossing what looked liked a kids backpack into the water. "What now?" I said, "now we talk to him, Klea marched right up to him like was she nuts, I had to follow her even though every part of me was screaming not too. "Excuse me is that yours?" she said, "nah" he said, "I saw you toss it though" she said, "mind your business kid" he said, "I am not a kid but I mean what would your daughter think of you tossing her bag in the water" Klea said, "Klea let's go" I said, "listen to your boyfriend" the man said, this when Klea lost it. "First of do not assume he is my boyfriend and second you are some father, I mean first you dump your kid in the water and leave her to die. Then you just toss her stuff to hide the evidence right?" Klea said, "What?" he said coming at her but I pulled her away. "Klea" I said, "no he knows what he did" Klea said standing her ground she was a lot braver than I gave her credit for, she was going to be a bad ass cop.
Before he could do anything or Klea could say anything else the police arrived, "Mr. Johnston we would like to have a few words" the officer said he gave me a wink. It was the same cop I helped take down that man, I had a feeling he was going to come in handy here I felt like I could trust him. "Max are you okay?" Klea asked me "fine" I said, "you sure you look like you might be sick" she said, "I am good lets just go home" I said before we could though the cop came up to us. "Great job kid another case you helped us solve, without you he would have been long gone" he said, "it was all her" I said pointing to Klea. "Well either way great job" he said and Klea was beaming I mean I would be too if I didn't feel like I was going to pass out.
I was so angry I guess asking not to get sick only made it inevitable it was the damn weekend now and I was sick, it was so damn cold I was practically shaking. "Max are you okay?" I said, "fine, I am just going to go get something" I said heading to my room. I knew we were all going to be hanging out but I just needed to grab a sweater or maybe two. I couldn't be sick, I was going to be fine, as soon as I arrived in my dorm I fell to the floor, I couldn't move I felt so weird. Not like I was going to puke but worse, something was wrong like really wrong, maybe I was dying it definitely felt like I was dying. I didn't know how long I lay there not moving, I couldn't even get onto the bed if I wanted too I felt so weak, my entire body hurt and I was so fucking cold. My phone was in my pocket but I couldn't get to it because it felt like my entire body was frozen and the pins and needles stabbing me didn't help.
Was this what dying felt like it must be, then I heard the door open, "oh my god Max" it was my girl unless I was hallucinating, I couldn't tell. "Oh my god you are burning up" she said now super concerned, I felt like she was real she had to be, "Aria" I croaked out, "shh its okay I am here" she said she was on her phone what was she doing. I closed my eyes her being her made me feel calm and I knew it would be okay to close my eyes she was a doctor right.
I woke up a few hours later in the hospital, all my friends around me, "next time you feel sick man tell me" Klea said, "I don't know what happened" I said, "well you passed out in your dorm, you are sick babe and this is serious" she said. "I hate being sick" I said, "well that is what happens when you dive into freezing cold lakes" Klea said, "what do I have?" I asked, "the doctors are running tests" Aria said, "I think I'm going to be sick" I said, Hunter passed me some sort of bucket just in time as I puked into it several times. I was so not okay ugh! The doctor came into the room, "Max as far as we can tell you just have the flu, I understand you were exposed to the ocean recently" she said, "yes I was saving someone's life" I said, "okay with that being said I would like to do an MRI just to be safe" she said, "why?" I asked feeling my heart pounding in my chest, Aria squeezed my hand.
"We just want to be sure it isn't something more serious, like a parasite" she said. "I um I am actually fine" I said, trying to get up, "Max its going to be okay" Aria said, "I can't please" I said looking at her, "its going to be okay the MRI won't hurt you " the doctor said, fuck that she had no idea, "Aria I can't" I said knowing exactly why I couldn't she kissed me. "Shh I will be there with you please for me you can do this" she said, "No please" I said, "what is the problem?" the doctor asked, "he is scared of the MRI" Aria said, "there is nothing to be scared of honey the machine is perfectly safe" she said. "Just give us a minute okay" Aria said pushing the doctor out of the room, "this won't be like the last time Max you don't have the nano bots. The CT was okay remember" Hunter said. "The CT was not the problem the last time the MRI is the one that hurt" I said, "it won't hurt baby okay you will be fine just close your eyes and think about me" she said. I tired to calm down but it wasn't working.
"I am sorry I am going to need to take you now" the doctor said, "no its fine" I said trying to convince her I was fine, "we need to run this test in order to discharge you Max I am sorry" she said. Fuck I was going to die, death by MRI oh my god I was being so lame. My girlfriend probably thought I was a loser. I was pushed into the MRI room, "this will only take a minute" the doctor said as she made me scooch over on the MRI table, I tried to calm myself down think happy thoughts, think Aria.
I was fine until the machine made a sound, I literally jumped out of my skin, "Max I need you to lie still" she said, easy for her to say she didn't have her brain fired 50 times by and MRI. I squeezed my eyes shut and breathed, it was not helping the sound of the machine was making me feel on edge. Finally it was over and as soon as I saw Aria I felt better. That was so not worth it if I was fine, being sick sucked did I mention that!
