The fight with the two androids and Red Tornado's sudden betrayal had been enough to leave the Team reeling. Cameron had been more scared than he would have thought possible- his friends had almost died- but Robin had managed to construct the EMP device and Cam had managed to get close enough with the arrow to make the connection to cause it to go off. He was grateful they were all alive, but he still felt the sting of Red Tornado's betrayal
"He could have had his programming taken over," Robin told him. "Or had something buried in it at the time of his creation. I don't think it's his fault."
"I do not believe so either," Kaldur told them. "But the question remains how do we find him?"
"The League's working on that," Jade told them. "We're going to help them restore the base tomorrow. Until then, we shouldn't waste our time second guessing things. We'll probably just be wrong anyway."
"Right," Wally said. "And if you don't mind, I'm going to go home. Come on, Cam. I'll share a Zeta with you."
"Thanks," Cam said in surprise. Wally hadn't been hanging out with him much lately outside of the Team. He seemed to be getting a clue that Conner and M'Gann were an item and while he had seemed grumpy at first he had lately been in a much better mood. "Good night, guys."
"Good night," Conner said shortly. He was supporting M'Gann who offered them a weary smile as they left.
Shortly, they were back in Central City.
"Hey, how tired are you?" Wally asked him after they had changed back into their civilian clothes.
"I can stay up a bit," Cam told him. "You want to go get pizza?"
"No- I mean, sure. But there's someone I want you to meet."
"Oh?" Cam cocked an eyebrow.
"Yeah. She's really something. I saved her on a patrol when I was subbing for Barry- and I couldn't help but ask her out. She said yes. Since then we've been seeing each other pretty regularly."
"Wait a minute. Are you telling me that you told some stranger your secret id?"
"No. Not exactly. I mean, she's seen me without the mask but I haven't told her my real name. She just calls me 'Kid.'"
"Wally, you're the one who told me not to give our secret ids away. What were you thinking?" Cam fought back a sudden wave of jealousy. "Or were you thinking?"
Wally shrugged. "She's fine. Come on. I'll text her and we can meet her at the pizza place. You'll see once you meet her. She's fine. I mean, she's fine but she's also trustworthy. I've been wanting you to meet her for a while now."
As always, Cam found himself agreeing with Wally. He really shouldn't have tried arguing with him. Once Wally dropped the puppy eyes on him … "Okay, so let's meet this girl."
Wally also placed an order for their favorite pizza on the way, and Cam consoled himself with the thought that if he had to be the third wheel at least he'd be a well fed third wheel. Maybe if Wally was making googly eyes at his new sweetie Cam could actually get more than one slice of pizza for a change.
"Hey, beautiful!" Wally said waving his hand at a girl who sat at a booth waiting for them.
"I bet you say that to all the girls," the exotic looking blonde said with a smile as they joined her. She was around their age- possibly a little younger- but she had an aura of self possession that Cam hadn't seen on many of his fellow teenagers. She was wearing a green jacket and her long hair was pulled back into a ponytail.
There was something achingly familiar about her.
"Di, this is … oh let's just call him Frostier."
"Like the snowman?" Di asked with a curious smile. "Pleased to meet you, Frostie."
Cam rolled his eyes. "Smooth, Kid. Really smooth."
Wally slipped an arm over the girl's shoulder as he took a place beside her in the booth. Again Cam felt a wave of jealousy... but also apprehension. He didn't know why, but something about the girl put his senses on high alert. He felt like she was going to throw a punch at any moment … the girl practically reeked of danger.
How could Wally not sense it?
The girl smirked as she gave Wally a lingering kiss and then looked over at Cam.
Oh. That's how.
"I'll go check on our pizza. I'm starving." He glanced back at Di. "We had quite a night, Di. I'll tell you all about it when I get back. You're lucky your lover boy is in one piece."
"I sure am," Di said with a lascivious smile. "Hurry back soon, love."
Cam bit back a sarcastic remark.
Di looked at him. "It's been a long time, Cameron."
His eyes widened in alarm. "Who are you?"
Di made a tsk-tsk noise. "And here I thought you were the smart one. Of course, compared to Kid just about anyone seems smart."
"Watch your mouth," Cam growled.
"He is a good kisser. I'll say that much for him." Di frowned. "You really have no idea who I am? I'm hurt, Cameron. I'm really hurt."
And then it clicked.
"Artemis," Cam breathed.
"Finally. I was beginning to think you'd never guess." She reached over and squeezed his hand. "I always said you were smarter than your father believed. Believe it or not, I've missed you."
"Jade misses you," Cam whispered.
"Oh I've heard the two of you have become quite buddy-buddy. Or is it more than that? Does big sister like her men on the younger side now?"
Cam rolled his eyes. "Don't be ridiculous." He knew that Artemis was dangerous. She had nearly killed Kaldur when the Team fought her. Still, he had to try again. "Jade misses you."
"She wouldn't have if she had just stayed with us," Artemis told him with quite anger in her voice. "She left the family. She left when Mom and I needed her."
"Your mom … is sick, Artemis. She needs help. You need help."
"We have all that we need, Cameron."
"Why are you doing this? Why are you messing with Kid?"
"Oh, it's kind of fun. Imagine how he'll feel when he discovers the girl he's been whispering sweet nothings to is the same one his team has fought more than once already. He's going to feel like an idiot, isn't he?"
"I'll tell him."
"Not tonight, you won't."
"What's to stop me? You?"
"Yes. You see, Cameron, I've prepared for this little meeting. There's a bomb somewhere in Central City. A quite deadly bomb. And I can activate it with just a thought. If you tell Kid about me … if I get the slightest idea from him that he's figured out that sweet Di is actually the Tigress, then I'll detonate this bomb. And when I do … well, there won't be much left of Central City."
"You're bluffing."
"Am I? You think that I'm in this all alone, Cam? I have friends. Allies. Powerful allies. And they're going to act even if I don't. I would hate to murder millions of people … well, maybe I would hate to murder millions of people. I am my mother's daughter after all."
Cam stared at her in horror. "This isn't you. I knew you, Artemis. I can't believe you would ever become this."
Artemis shrugged. "Well, you can always find out … but I would hate to take the risk if I were you. Think of all those deaths on your conscious."
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because I can. You took something from me. I'm taking something from you."
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"Jade."
"What about her?" Cam asked in confusion.
"You think you can steal my place in my sister's heart and not pay the price? I've seen her with you. Oh yes, I'm very good at that sort of thing. Jade belongs at my side not yours. But you've taken her from me."
"Jade made her choice long before I ever met her."
Artemis shrugged. "Doesn't matter. She made the wrong choice. So yes, I'm going to toy with your sweet Kid Flash, Cam. I'm not going to kill him. Oh no. I'm just going to take him from you. And you're going to let me because if you don't people will die."
"Hey you two," Wally said as he came back with a pizza and some soft drinks on a tray. "What did I miss?"
"Nothing." Cam avoided his eyes. "Nothing at all."
