General POV
Christina, Garret, and Megan were walking down the exterior of the school, coming from the football field, to pick Lily and Lucas up and wait for Jane to take them home. As they were approaching the primary school building, they noticed a tall man looking over the fence. "Is that the same guy?" Garret commented.
They have seen the same man on other occasions, though never so close to the buildings; they thought it was a father of a child or even security as the man always was around the school perimeter but never passed the front yard. It was strange. They could see that with his eyes, he was following a group of kids, in which group Megan noticed Lucas running. She wasn't sure, but she could have sworn his eyes were following his little brother. No one else seemed to notice the man, so they decided not to approach him, but Megan sneakily took a picture of him. "Yeah, I think so," She said. And right after the man left and sat on one of the benches like he was waiting for his kid.
"Should we tell Dad?" Christina asked her brother.
Megan shrugged, but Garret reasoned, "And what do we tell him? There is a man waiting. There are a few parents already waiting. He could be simply waiting," he said.
"If he's there tomorrow, I'm telling," Christina said.
Megan nodded again, her worry growing a little. She didn't like the man, and she didn't like he was even looking in the direction of her little brother.
"So, we are going to the movies on Friday?" Garret asked Megan, taking her hand.
"Yeah, sure!" Megan said excitedly, looking at her boyfriend and taking his hand as well.
"Megan and Garret sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G," Christina mocked them.
Megan rolled her eyes and playfully punched her in the arm. "You're a pain, sis. You know that, right?" They laughed and reached the primary school building to pick the kids up.
They had been home for a while, and time went by pretty quickly. Jane arrived with the kids, and they got their homework together and had dinner. Maura arrived a little later but in time to eat with her wife and children. After dinner, Maura spent some time with the younger kids, Megan went to her room, and Jane took some time to review some files she wanted to revise for a current case they were dealing with.
Megan went down the stairs for a drink. As she went into the kitchen, she found Jane engrossed in files. "Hey, Ma," she said as she kept walking towards the cupboard to grab a glass.
"What you up to?" Jane asked, looking up from the stack of files she was reading.
Megan opened the fridge and poured water into the glass. She drank it and left the glass in the sink. "Nothing," she said. Then she remembered the man and the incident.
"Ma, can I… show you something?" She asked.
"Yeah, sure," Jane replied, moving the files to the side and paying full attention to the girl.
"For a few days now, we have noticed a man around the school. He's usually outside of the primary school building. He hasn't done anything, but he sort of gives me the ick," Megan recalled.
Jane's gut told her this was not going to be good, and then Megan took her phone from her pocket. "I don't know if I'm being paranoid, but he was looking over a bunch of kids playing in the yard, and Lucas was there," she said, then showed the picture she took of the man to her mother.
At the sight of the picture, Jane's blood turned cold, her eyes went wide, and her breathing became erratic. "What's he doing out?" Jane whispered in disbelief. Megan's eyebrows furrowed, and she was now confused and worried, unsure of what her mother meant with her words.
"Give a minute. I have to make a call." Jane then walked to the backyard and tried to calm her breathing down. She then called Korsak.
"How is he out!?" Jane almost yelled as soon as Korsak picked up the phone.
"What are you talking about, Jane?" Korsak asked, not knowing what Jane was talking about.
"Casey, Vince. Casey is out!" Jane said, urgency evident in her voice.
The line remained silent for a few seconds. "What? How do you know?... How could he be out? He had a life sentence!" Korsak asked incredulously.
"Meg…Meg took a picture of him…at school," she said worriedly, frantically rubbing her forehead with her fingers.
"Ok. Don't panic. I'll make some calls and call you back as soon as possible," Korsak said seriously.
"Thanks, Vince," Jane said, her heart still beating as if it was going to burst out of her chest and her worry increasing by the second. She went back inside and found Megan in the same spot she had left her, looking down at her hands leaning against the kitchen island.
Megan looked up as soon as she saw Jane coming into the kitchen and taking a seat where she had been reading. "Ma, what's going on?" Megan asked, concerned.
Jane breathed deeply before replying to her daughter's question. "The-The man in picture, I know him." She said, not knowing how to explain the situation.
The teen looked at Megan. "Yeah, I figured as much. Who's he? Someone you put in jail?" Megan asked, almost distressed.
Jane shook her head, closed her eyes, and took another deep breath. "That is Lucas' father," she replied, her voice almost above a whisper.
Megan's eyes went wide in surprise. Of all the answers she could have foreseen, that wasn't one of them. Her mouth parted slightly, but she didn't know what to say.
"He is supposed to be in Jail," She said.
Megan didn't want to ask. She knew that it was not going to be a good story and for her mother, the strong, unfazed, strong, and courageous Dt. Rizzoli, to become a nervous wreck, it couldn't be good. The silence was deafening between them. Megan didn't want to ask, but Jane was saying nothing, and it was excruciating.
"Ma, you're scaring me now," Megan said, observing her mother's lack of words and worried and mortified expression.
Jane sighed. "Casey Jones, the man in the picture, was my husband many years ago," she said, now intently looking into Megan's eyes. The girl remained silent, almost stoic.
"He was… abusive. Well, not in the beginning. I met him in high school, and we remained on-and-off relationships throughout our high school years, but then he enrolled in the military and left on several tours around the Middle and Far East... As soon as he ranked up to Lieutenant Colonel, he was severely wounded in the field in Afghanistan" Jane paused. "He came back, and in a matter of weeks, things got serious; he asked me to marry him… I said yes" Jane then said, and she was feeling her mouth getting more and more dry with every word. Megan saw this and rapidly took a glass and filled it with water, handing it to her mama.
"Thank you, sweetheart," She whispered as she gulped down the liquid. A few seconds later, she continued "We moved together and soon after, I found myself pregnant, it wasn't part of the plan, not so soon anyways, but I was… I was really happy… funny enough, the first one to know was your mom," She said with a smile at the thought of Maura. "It was all fine, until it wasn't" Jane commented, rubbing her face with her hand. "With his injuries, he wasn't able to continue in the army, and that was all he was. He couldn't find a job in anything related and would not settle for anything less. By the time Lucas was a newborn, things started to go downhill…rapidly. He started by simply raising his voice, annoyed at a couple of weeks old baby's cries and whimpers, then he started yelling and losing his temper…" Jane trailed off and took a few seconds to compose herself.
She looked at the girl in front of her; her expression remained mostly neutral, but she could see hurt in her eyes. "By the time Lucas was about four months, he was mad all the time; he wouldn't pick him up or even go close to him. He was mad that Lucas was taking most my time and attention, he hated that he had to share me, even with his own son. It continued like that for a while, I thought it was the stress of no finding a job and his injuries, I thought it was depression or PTSD or something" Jane said, trying to rationalise why she didn't get out of that situation earlier.
"Your mom knew something was wrong when I started to distance myself; I would make excuses, mainly that Lucas was with anything I could think of: tummy aches, a fever, colics… Anything to avoid her. If she knew what was going on, she was going to do anything in her power to get me out of that situation… and…I don't know, call it catholic guilt or whatever, but I couldn't leave him; he was my husband; we were supposed to be there in health and sickness and all that," She said, her face showing embarrassment. "But one day, I found him shaking Lucas, screaming at him to shut up, he was a nine month-old baby" Jane said, this time rage was the main emotion visible in the detectives features. The teen remained silent, but her eyes were pooled with unshed tears, and once every other minute, she had to remind herself of the lump stringing her throat.
"I screamed at Casey, to let Luc go" She said, her eyes closing now "He forcefully throw him into the crib and came charging at me, we started to wrestle and struggle…" Jane stopped; she didn't want to give too many details to Megan about the fight and how battered she ended up. Casey was a trained army colonel. He knew how to fight and how to inflict more damage with the least effort; he had broken one of Jane's writs and made a big gash on her head; he managed to break and fissure some of her ribs and dislocate her left knee, and in general, she was left pretty wounded. Jane thought for a few seconds about how to continue. "I managed to free from his grasp and took Lucas. We hid in the bathroom and called your mom," she said, taking a deep breath. "It seemed like ages between the wait and the banging on the bathroom door and Casey's rageful screams, but I then remember hearing Korsak's voice and other officers coming… Then everything went black, and the next thing I remember is being in a hospital room with your mom next to me," Jane recalled and looked back at the girl with fidgeting hands and a sad expression. "Lucas was fine, just a little bump in his head from when Casey threw him onto the crip, but good all in all, thank God", She said, relieved.
Megan remained silent, trying to process everything her Mother had just told her. Jane was silent as well, waiting for any reaction from the teen. Megan didn't say anything but went to the older woman and hugged her strongly around her middle "I'm so sorry, Ma" She said, not letting go of the woman. Jane also took the girl in her arms, taking comfort in the love of her daughter. "You didn't deserve any of that" The teen whispered. Megan was hurting for her mother, who was genuinely one of the most loving and caring people she had ever known. Not only because she was her mother but also because of how she was at her job, her compassion, and her dedication to bringing justice to victims and those who were harmed.
Jane broke the embrace and grabbed the teen's shoulders. "Megan, you have to promise me that you won't go close to him," Jane exacerbated, looking directly into the teen's eyes.
"Ma, if he goes close to Lucas I…" Megan began saying but was interrupted by Jane.
"Under no circumstance, Megan. I mean it!" Jane said, "He is a trained military colonel. He is very dangerous, " she continued, urgency evident in her words.
"Ma, if he goes close to Lucas, I'm not going to let him," Megan said, determined to her mama.
"You call me, call your Mom. Hell! You call Frost or Korsak. Even if you think you see him, don't go close to him and call us…Please," Jane exclaimed with termination. She was aware of what he was capable of. Jane's eyes softened. "If he does anything to you, Lucas or Lily, even if he touches a sing hair… I would never forgive myself, Megan" Tears shimmering in her eyes.
Megan understood her mother's shaky, urgent, and desperate voice, which was almost a plea to her. "I won't come close to him, I promise," Megan said resignedly.
Jane closed her eyes "Thank you" Jane whispered. They remained in their embrace until Jane realized it was getting late, and she had to explain this whole ordeal to Maura and wait for Korsak's call. "Why don't you go to sleep, sweetheart? It's getting late," Jane suggested.
Megan nodded and started walking towards the stairs, her head full of questions she had no energy to ask now, and she knew her mother had no energy to answer. "I…" Megan began, "…I don't know if you need to hear this, but you tried to… to understand and stay by his side, keep your vows. He deserves to rot in hell for even touching you or Lucas, you're too good for that bastard" Megan said with conviction and anger, she walked up the stairs without letting Jane respond. Jane was overwhelmed by the situation, speechless at what Megan had said, and worried sick about how she was going to solve all this.
"So, what did Korsak said?" Maura asked as he paced the kitchen back and forth. Jane had told her what happened at school and they both were now worried, they were unsure of how to proceed, what was the best way to keep the kids safe.
Jane sighed and rubbed her face with her hands, frustrated. "He's still enquiring. The only thing he's been told is that a few weeks ago, there was a power outage at Rikers, and some inmates escaped… Casey between them," Jane said, frustrated and irritated at the personnel's incompetence.
Maura stopped and furrowed her brow. "A few weeks ago?" she said in disbelief. "Why weren't we informed?" she then asked, now angry.
Jane nodded and sighed again. "That's what Korsak is investigating," Jane said and got up from the stool she was sitting on. "I'm going to the station; I can't let that son of a bitch come close to our kids," Jane said, walking towards the dining table to graze her jacket from one of the chairs.
Maura walked behind her and grabbed her arm. "Jane, you need to rest. Korsak and the team are taking care of it. They will inform us immediately if anything happens. You cannot be running on empty now," Maura reasoned. She was right. Jane had been barely sleeping the past week with the cases they had had, and she needed to be as sharp as she could to protect her family.
"Maura, I can't stand still while he is out there doing God knows what!" Jane raised her voice. She was agitated and restless, and she couldn't sit and watch from afar.
"I know Jane… believe me, I want to go out there too and catch him myself," Maura began. "But we can't simply jump into action without anything that leads us to him. Let Korsak do his job for tonight. There are two patrols outside the house, and there is a multi-state Orange alert on his name," Maura said, her expression softened at the sight of distress her wife showed. "I know you are worried, Jane. I am too, but you will find him and put him back behind bars again," She reassured, kissing her wife's perfect lips. The kiss was desperate and heated, showing how much they needed each other.
Jane kissed her back, this time exploring further into the blonde's mouth. The kiss grew more urgent, and she desperately needed to convey all her love and the need for comfort. After the kiss, Jane rested her forehead against Maura's for a little while, finding solace in the love of her wife. "I… love… Maur… so… so… so…much," Jane said, accentuating each word with a soft and chaste kiss.
"I love you too, my dear Jane," Maura replied.
"What are we doing about the kids? Do we send them to school tomorrow? Should we escape to France and wait for everything to resolve on its own?" Jane softly laughed, trying to lighten the mood.
Maura smiled and softly laughed at her wife's sometimes quirky antics. "Well, tomorrow is Friday, and they have a short day. I have spoken with the principal and vice-principal, and they will take measures. They have a picture and description of Casey. We can ask Frankie to be stationed outside school and bring them home as soon as they finish classes, and then I will be there early to pick Megan up," Maura suggested.
"Sounds like a plan," Jane said, pressing her lips to her wife's again in a deeper, more passionate kiss. Jane traced her fingers over the line of Maura's jaw and pulled her tight to her chest. Maura's lips parted as her fingers brushed over Jane's nape, tangling her fingers around her curls. Goosebumps washed down the brunette's back as she closed the gap between their mouths, first with the utmost gentleness, then with the hunger of a starved woman. Maura made a delicious little sound, a soft moan and responded with the same hunger, sparking a fire in her belly. They didn't want it to stop.
xx A few days later xx
"So, we have nothing," Jane said, angry and frustrated, bagging her fist on her desk.
Korsak walked to the woman and stood in front of her. "I know it's frustrating, Jane. There are active police patrols around the school and your home. As well as a multi-state alert," he said, trying to sound reassuring. "If he is seen, he will be taken back to prison and very far away from you and your family," he said, looking straight into her dark eyes.
Jane nodded and grunted, leaning her head back and rubbing her eyes. The woman hasn't slept more than a few hours each night since Megan showed her the photo of Casey around school. The whole team has been fully invested in finding him since they knew he was out, just like a dedicated team in New York from where he escaped. It has been a cumulous of unfortunate events, fortunate events for him and another three criminals that escaped. There has been a major security breach while transporting another inmate from Rikers to another prison, orchestrated by some inmates who were out of their cells to get a hold of a set of security access keys from a dirty prison officer, followed by a total blackout caused by the inmates that got into the electrical cabinet and disconnected all backup generators and turned all main electrical lines off. Among those who planned the escapes were Casey, who faked an illness and the help of the dirty officer who granted an emergency transport to a hospital while the others teamed up to get a hold of the keys. During the transfer, Casey managed to escape custody as the dirty officer was there to make it easy for him.
The district didn't want to make it public information. It has been a major breach of the chain of custody. As well, there have been several internal errors, including a lack of supervision and tampering with the security systems and surveillance devices. While checking internal documents, they saw several discrepancies between the new hires and who they really were, their documentation, and their shift pattern; these were nothing like they should have been and how it was disposed of for health and safety regulations. It was messy, and both the Department of Corrections of the state of New York and the police department didn't want these irregularities to transcend to the news; it would have been a massive scandal if it had been made public.
Korsak and Frost have been to NYC to speak personally with anyone involved and understand how this happened. They were still investigating; the information didn't add up, and there was so much that was still a mystery. Their biggest concern is that Casey was out and still on the run. Frost has been constantly checking traffic cameras in the surrounding area of the school and Jane's house, but so far, nothing has been found, not a single sighting of Casey.
The lack of progress was what had jane on edge, it was the uncertainty. The situation at Rikers was controlled, and actions were being taken, but Casey was out there, and his idea was to get close to Lucas. He had been too close to him already. But that meant he could be also close to Lily or Megan. Both Maura and her had been very careful with their schedules, at least one of the picked the kids up from school every day or Frankie would If they couldn't.
It was easy to control Lily and Lucas, they were small and most of their activities were already heavily supervised, but Megan was 17 already, she had friends and extracurricular activities for which sometimes left school at different times than her siblings. What calmed both mothers down a little was the fact that Casey didn't know Megan, or at least, it didn't look like it, as Megan had been near him, and he hadn't reacted to her presence. Either way, the teen needed to keep constant communication with her mothers about her whereabouts and if there were any changes in her schedule. The school was aware of this, too, and increased security for the time being until they had more information about the situation.
Jane's phone rang. Megan had written to tell her she would stay longer in school to practice with the music club. She wasn't thrilled about it. The team tended to practice at odd hours, and sometimes schedules were only for indication, but they could finish later than expected, more so with the Thanksgiving musical coming up.
Jane acknowledged the text and asked the teen to let her know before the class was finished so she or Maura could be there to pick her up. Megan didn't reply, but she had read the message. Jane knew the girl was responsible and would be diligent about communicating when she would be finishing. She went back to the tedious task of re-reading the case files and checking they hadn't missed a single clue or helpful information.
"Hey, should we go to the store to pick some snacks before practice begins?" Megan asked Garreth, leaving their last lesson of the day.
"Not sure your moms will be ok with you leaving the school, Megan" Garreth rationalised knowing the situation.
Megan continued walking. "Come on, it's literally two blocks away from here, and we'll be in practice until God knows when," she said, grabbing his hand. It'll be two minutes; besides, I didn't have lunch because of the chemistry exam," she pouted while pulling the reluctant teen to the exit doors.
Garreth laughed. "And what does the exam have to do with the fact that you didn't eat?" he asked curiously.
The girl smiled. "I was too nervous to eat… Please, come on," She continued, pouting at her boyfriend.
"Ok," He said, not convinced.
Both teens walked the short walk to the store with no inconvenience, both were very attentive to their surroundings, there were not too many cars or people in the street, it was an overcast day, and it was threatening to rain. Megan picked up some snacks and a drink, and both were walking back to the school when Megan texted Jane to let her know she would be staying in school until later to practice for the Thanksgiving recital. They were at an intersection and waited until it was green to cross the street, in the meantime she read her mother's reply to her text.
The light turned green for pedestrians, and they crossed the street, Megan stayed a little behind replying to Jane's text, when Garrett was in the sidewalk noticed Megan walking slowly, he was waiting for her to finish crossing when his phone rang too, it was Cristina asking where they were. He got distracted replying and didn't notice the car that turned the corner and was speeding towards the intersection. Megan, with her eyes on her phone typing to reply to her mother, didn't notice it either until, with her peripheral vision, she saw shining lights rapidly approaching her.
She didn't have time to react; as soon as she understood what was happening, she managed to take a couple of steps, but the car forcefully impacted with her body, the sound of a bone-crushing thud as the metal of the black sedan met with the flesh of the teen. Megan's body was launched forward by the force of impact like a ragdoll, she flew a few meters, hitting the pavement with great force, her body rolled a few feet more, only stopped by the sidewalk. Blood pooled from beneath the body and head of the girl, thick and slowly spreading to the hard, cold pavement.
The car didn't stop or attempt to slow down; in fact, it sped up even faster, leaving the girl on the street and a shocked Garret unable to move.
