Chapter 7 – Only For Emergencies
Jane and Maura had been secretly dating for a few months. Jane spent quite a bit of time over at Maura's. Her mother, Angela, lived in Maura's guest house and frequently came into the main house when they were there.
When Angela first moved in Maura gave her a key to the main house as Angela was utilizing the larger kitchen to cook for Rizzoli family dinners on Sundays. Maura loved that the Rizzoli's were comfortable in her house. Angela treated Maura like she was a daughter and Maura loved it. She didn't have that great of a relationship with her adoptive mother, Constance. Jane's dog, Jo Friday, was also spending a great deal of time at Maura's so Angela was able to look in on her when Jane and Maura had to work late. So, the key came in handy for emergencies.
Jane paid extra attention to her mother's work schedule, loving when she worked nights as that allowed her time alone with Maura at Maura's house. Maura's house was larger than Jane's apartment. Jane felt as if she had room to move around. Maura had the basement set up with a gym for Jane. She also put in a large television and sound system. Jane loved watching movies with Maura downstairs.
Jo Friday, loved being at Maura's. Jo had a nice doggy bed and Maura had better food for her. Jo felt like a princess at Maura's. When Jane shook her leash at Jo and said, "wanna go to Maura's?" Jo was excited and ran to the door. Jane often wondered if Jo loved Maura more than her. She had to admit that her dog had great taste in women, Maura was remarkable so she didn't hold it against Jo. Jane allowed Jo Friday to spend more time at Maura's at Maura's request. Jo Friday loved to spend time with Maura's tortoise, Bass.
Jane had told Maura when Maura gave the key to Angela, "Babe, you told her that the key is only for emergencies right?"
"Of course, Jane. I explained that some nights we might have to work late and I wanted her to be able to check in on Jo and Bass. She understood."
"Knowing my mother, she will use the key for other than emergency situations, I can almost guarantee it."
"Oh Jane, have a little faith in your mother."
"Maur, I would except I remember having a conversation with her when I was seeing Casey and she walked in on us. Luckily Casey was just sitting on the side of the bed dressed when she walked in on us."
"Oh, we don't want anything like that to happen to us."
"I know that is why I asked about whether you told her that the key is for emergencies only."
All had gone well for about six months. Jane and Maura had set up the Christmas tree and had finished decorating the tree. Angela was spending the night with her boyfriend, Ron, so Jane planned a special evening for her and Maura. Maura had a meeting with the Governor and would be home later than Jane, so Jane started getting things ready for their special night. She turned the lights on the Christmas tree on and turned off all of the other lights downstairs. She plated their take-out Chinese food and placed their plates on the coffee table and lit a candle. She tried to make it as romantic as possible.
Maura was surprised when she walked in. She loved when Jane did special things like this for them. They enjoyed their meal and cleaned up. Jane then took Maura over to the Christmas tree. They sat on the floor in front of the tree, enjoying the peaceful setting. Jane reached into her pocket and pulled out a ring box and as she presented it to Maura she asked, "Maura, will you marry me?" Jane knew that Maura didn't want a huge overwhelming proposal. She had told Jane when the time came, she just wanted something simple and uniquely them.
Maura didn't hesitate replying, "Yes, Jane I would be honored to marry you." Jane placed the ring on Maura's finger and kissed it in place. She then and kissed Maura. Maura kissed her back and they started undressing each other. They had taken their shirts off and Jane was getting ready to unclasp Maura's bra when they heard Angela call for them. They didn't hear her come in through the back door.
They scrambled to put their shirts back on and sit up on the couch but before they could do that Angela walked into the living room to put some gifts under the tree for TJ. She was quite surprised to see Jane and Maura on the floor with their shirts off. "Oh my, what are the two of you doing?" She asked as if she didn't know what they were doing.
Jane asked, "Ma, what are you doing here?" Jane and Maura had both quickly put their shirts back on and were now sitting on the couch.
"I live here Jane. I was putting some presents under the tree."
"I can see that, I mean I thought you were at Ron's tonight."
"I am, we had just picked up TJ's presents so I thought I would drop them off. What is going on here? What did I interrupt?"
"Ma, that key is only for emergencies, not for whenever you want to come into Maura's house."
"I knew Maura would be late tonight as she had her meeting with the Governor so I thought she wouldn't mind if I used the key to put the gifts under the tree. I don't want TJ seeing them at my place tomorrow when he comes over. Maura what is that on your finger?" Angela had suspected for some time that Jane and Maura were seeing each other. She was just waiting for them to tell her. "Oh my God, is that an engagement ring? Did Jane finally come to her senses and ask you to marry her?"
Both Jane and Maura were stunned and Angela could tell by the way they turned and looked at each other. "Oh girls, don't be so surprised I have known you were seeing each other for quite some time now. I have been waiting for you, either one of you to tell me. I am so happy for you. When is the wedding? Can I help plan it? Does that mean you are going to start giving me grandchildren. I don't care who carries the babies, I just want grandbabies."
"Ma, please settle down, I just asked Maura to marry me a few minutes ago. Wait, how did you know we were seeing each other?"
"A mother knows these things, Janie. She just knows."
"Ma, please give me your key to the main house. I know that Maura told you that it is only for emergencies. Putting gifts under the tree is not an emergency. You have ruined our special moment." Maura had gotten up and went upstairs. Jane was anxious to go after her and make sure that everything was okay.
Angela gave Jane the key and left the house. Jane went upstairs and found Maura curled up on top of the bed. "Maur, it's okay, my ma has left. I have her key so this won't happen again."
"I was so happy and then to have our moment broken up like that it made me sad. I didn't want to cry in front of your mother."
"I know babe, I know." Jane said as she pulled Maura into a tight hug. "I wanted to finish our evening by making love to you on the rug in front of the Christmas tree, but …"
"Oh Jane, that would have been perfect. I am sorry your mother ruined that. You can make love to me in our bed after you shut and lock our bedroom door."
"I locked the bedroom door when I came in and my mother is no longer in the house and remember I said I have her emergency key so this won't happen again."
"Thank you, Jane. Give me a few minutes and you can show me how much you love me and want me to be your wife." Maura told Jane as she broke away from their hug and got up and went into the bathroom to freshen up. She wanted to be presentable for when her fiancée made love to her for the first time.
