Over a year had passed, and Gwen was starting to settle into her new life. She was now working for SHIELD or Nick Fury, which was pleasing. However, she couldn't see the same with some of his colleagues, especially Maria Hill, who disliked the idea of superheroes working independently without restrictions.
Since she came roughly ten years into the future, Nick Fury quickly asked her several questions about what might transpire. She had to quickly point out that she only had the memories of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson; mixing those with her own meant she was still determining when certain events would happen.
She warned him about the Civil War and the Skrull Invasion, hoping that the outcome would be less blurry this time.
She also kept a close eye on Peter and Mary Jane. The two started forming a relationship, but when Peter tried to propose to her, she turned him down, which soured their relationship. On the other hand, given MJ's experience with around married men, Gwen could hardly blame her as her father pretty much abused her, her sister and mother and her brother-in-law pretty much abandoned her sister when she was pregnant with their second child.
This added to the complications of the arrival of another Peter Parker, who was, in fact, a clone created by Miles Warren, her former science teacher at ESU, who turned out to be the jackal and was infatuated with her. He even went as far as cloning her, which she found rather disturbing.
MJ then moved to Florida with her aunt, and Peter began having a relationship with one Felicia Hardy, a.k.a. the Black Cat. Gwen had to admit that Peter certainly had a way of attracting attractive women, herself included.
Of course, the Beyonder appeared out of nowhere, kidnapping several heroes to participate in his Secret Wars on Battle World. In this process, Peter accidentally bonded with a living alien organism, which increased his strength and agility and allowed him to make his own clothes. Unfortunately, it altered his personality, making him a bit more aggressive and cold to everyone around him.
By this point, Gwen had gained his trust, though she quickly told him she had no interest in a romantic partnership. She convinced him that the suit was bad, and he made his way to the Fantastic Four to have it removed.
MJ finally returned to Manhattan and admitted that she had known he was Spider-Man since he was 15. One of the main reasons she was reluctant to go with him was that she didn't know who the real Peter Parker was and wasn't comfortable dating a superhero.
Despite this, they did rekindle their relationship, and after he helped her sort out her family issues as Peter Parker and Spider-Man, she finally agreed to marry him. From Peter's memories, he accidentally knocked himself out, missing the ceremony while fighting crime on his wedding day.
So, on Peter's wedding day, Gwen kept a close eye on Peter. She had to admit, though, that his new black suit was a little eerie, a fact that she pointed out to him several times.
"Should you really be fighting crime on your wedding day?" Gwen asked as she swung beside him.
"Crime doesn't take a holiday, and if someone is in trouble, I can't just stand by and do nothing," he said. "That's how I lost my uncle."
"I understand, believe it or not, my father was a cop," she said.
Peter looked at her curiously. "You never mentioned your family before."
"What can I say? It's a special day, but that's beside the point," she said. "What I'm saying is that even he took holidays. You're only one guy; you can't stop crime all the time, and you deserve some R&R every once in a while, especially on your special day."
"But the city needs Spider-Man."
"And MJ's going to need Peter Parker," she countered. "You're going to be a husband soon and maybe a father someday; you got to think about the future for your family, not just the future for the city. Besides, you don't need to be a skintight outfit to be a hero."
"Says the woman in a skintight outfit," Peter smirked.
"Okay, maybe I'm not the best example," Gwen admitted. "I'm not telling you to stop being Spider-Man, telling you there's a lot of good you can do as Peter Parker. I mean, have you ever considered starting your own company."
Peter laughed but then saw that she was serious. "You mean it?"
"Parker Industries has a nice ring to it.
"So what, I become Tony Stark?"
"There are advantages in your own company; you won't have to worry about finances, and you don't have to worry about losing your job because you Spider-Man and you could possibly control the image of Spider-Man."
"I don't even have a PhD," Peter reminded her. "No one's gonna take me seriously without one."
"Then get one," Gwen shrugged. "I can take up the slack if you're concerned about the city."
"I don't even know you behind the mask," Peter pointed out.
"Many of the hero community don't know you behind the mask but still trust you. Just consider it; that's all I ask. Now you better get your wedding. We agreed that I should take up your slack today."
"B-but…"
"Do I have to take that costume off you?" Gwen scolded.
"Okay, point made; I'll make my way to the church now," Peter promised.
"You better, because it won't just be MJ, who will be angry at you if you leave her at the aisle."
True to his word, Peter made his way to the church on time, and Gwen safeguarded the city in his absence. However, she couldn't help but swing away by the church just in time to see Peter stepping out with MJ in her wedding dress.
Gwen couldn't help but think she was beautiful and happy as she wrapped her arm around Peter's. She could not help but feel a little jealous. There was a time when she wished she was marrying Peter, not MJ, but she knew it had to be this way.
She landed at a nearby building and watched everyone drive towards the reception.
"A beautiful sight, isn't it," said a voice.
Gwen turned and saw Madam Web's astral form directly behind her.
"Looks like the first part of my mission is a success," she said.
"Yes, but alas, this is only the beginning," said Madame Web. "Now you have to make sure that they stay married."
"But with my altered memories, I don't know when Mephisto will make his offer," Gwen pointed out.
"True, but we can deduce that Peter and Mary Jane would only give up their marriage if they felt as if they had no choice, to save a life, for instance."
"You think that someone they care about will be on the verge of death, and they will give their marriage to save them."
"They both have good-natured souls; I would say that it would be very likely."
"There are some situations where they might feel compelled to do so," said Gwen. "But if I prevent them, we don't know what might happen."
"But we do know what will happen if we don't intervene."
"I'll do my best to keep an eye on them and ensure that marriage is stable," said Gwen. "But it won't be easy; now that they're married, my memories won't be as accurate."
"And it is difficult for me to determine what might be and what could be," Madame Web added.
"Guess all we can do is our best," Gwen sighed.
Sadly, the two newlyweds encountered several troubles. First, Kraven the Hunter captured, drugged and then buried Peter in a mound of spiders. He then wore a cloth version of Peter's costume and began to hunt and kill criminals. Fortunately, Gwen managed to rescue Peter, and they defeated Kraven before things got too out of hand.
That wasn't enough. The symbiont that Peter brought back from Battle World attached itself to Eddie Brock, a reporter who had a grudge against Peter losing his job. Eddie Brock then began to torment Peter as Venom; it got so bad that Mary Jane was so terrified that she begged Peter not to wear his black costume, to which he agreed.
Then, a multimillionaire who was completely obsessed with Mary Jane held her prisoner in the very apartment building in which she and Peter had been living. The guy was completely insane as he wanted to marry Mary Jane even though she was already married to Peter, claiming that since she wasn't married to him, it meant she was not married.
Mary Jane was in a soundproof bunker just a few feet from her husband. Sadly, she was also about a metre away from her abductor, Jonathan Caesar.
"Come now, Mary Jane, there is no need to give me that dirty look," said Jonathan.
"And what kind of look should I get my abductor?" Mary Jane asked.
"My dear, that look on your beautiful face is something I do not want to see when we're married," he said as he sipped a glass of wine.
"As I keep reminding you, I am married; my husband is currently a few feet away."
"And as I keep reminding you since you are not married to me, that means you're not married. Besides, what can that husband of yours provide you with the luxuries that I provide, beautiful clothes and delicious food?"
"He provides the one thing you can't, love," she said, narrowing her eyes.
He then got up and lifted her chin towards his face. "I'm sure if you get to know me, you'll find that I am quite pleasant company."
Mary Jane wanted nothing but a slap in the face. However, the last time she did that, he threatened her with a knife. She knew that Peter wouldn't give up looking for her, no matter what, but there was no way he would ever think about looking for her in the apartment building itself. Jonathan also made sure not to leave any evidence of her abduction so he had no clues to go on.
Then, there was a knock on the door, and Jonathan seemed rather surprised.
"Who is that?" he demanded. He then turned his henchmen Stayx and Stones. "Go see who that is?"
"And would you want us to do with them, boss?" Stones asked.
"If it's nobody we know, then beat them up," he ordered.
"Right, oh," said Stayx.
The two goons began to make their way towards the door, which was suddenly blown off its hinges and held across the room. Everyone stared as the Ghost Spider entered the room.
"Room service," she said.
"Get her!" Jonathan ordered.
Stayx and Stones rushed towards Ghost Spider, but they were no match for her. She easily blocked Stones' punch, grabbed his arm and slammed him into Stayx. She then fired some webbing, sticking them to the floor.
"Don't go anywhere," she said.
Jonathan then quickly drew his knife and pointed it at Ghost Spider. "How dare you invade my personal space!"
"Says the guy who kidnapped a defenceless woman," Ghost Spider counted.
"She's mine, and I'm not going to let some costume loony deny me what is rightfully mine!"
"I've got news for you, pal. She's her own person," said Ghost Spider. "Also, if you have to resort to kidnapping a married woman just to get a date, you seriously need some medical help."
Jonathan roared angrily, swinging his knife at her, but she easily disarmed him and slammed him into the wall. She then fired some webbing, stuck him, leaving him stuck there, and quickly made her way to Mary Jane.
"You all right, Mrs Parker?" she asked.
"I am now, thanks to you, but where's my husband?" she asked.
"Looking for you currently. I've already sent a message telling you where you are, and he should be here very soon, as will the police," she informed her.
"It's Ghost Spider, right?" said Mary Jane, looking at her. "I don't believe we've met, but my husband says you know everything."
"I do," she nodded. "And I'm a friend; all I want is for you and your husband to be together."
"How'd you know I was here?" Mary Jane asked.
"I've been keeping a close eye on both of you," she informed her. I also knew that Mr Caesar was fixated on you." She then turned her eyes to Jonathan's little shrine of Mary Jane, which was more than a little disturbing, "but I didn't realise he was crazy about you."
"Neither did I," she said, rubbing her forehead. "I think I need some fresh air."
"Come on, let's get out of here," said Ghost Spider, guiding her out of her prison.
"Just who are you under that mask?" Mary Jane asked.
"I can't tell you that, but I am a friend," she said.
Mary Jane looked at her and couldn't help but feel as if there was something familiar about her, and she felt as if she could trust her.
"You just make sure Peter doesn't get himself killed," she said.
"He can look after himself, but I promise I will look after him," Ghost Spider assured her. "I know you're terrified enough for one night; let's take you home."
"I know I can't stop him, and I do love the fact that he wants to help people when they're in trouble, but I can't help but worry about all the enemies he makes. I feel so powerless."
"MJ, don't you understand? You want the most important person in his life right now. He has every reason to come home alive; all he needs is your support."
MJ nodded as they stepped outside, and they were soon greeted by Peter, who immediately rushed over and hugged her. MJ couldn't help but smile as she rested her head on his shoulders; Ghost Spider was right. She had to be there for him when it mattered, no matter what danger he put himself in.
Peter and MJ are officially married again. Now that he's married, I intend to follow the story arcs like Spider-Island and Superior Spider-Man, but with a little twist.
My major problem is the figure in a timeline, and these events happened like how old they were, but I'll make it work.
