Chapter 21: Daily Life

Fan Xueyao did not rush to pick up her chopsticks. Instead, she glanced at the young palace maid and smiled slightly, saying, "Please convey my thanks to Ma Sishan. She has been thoughtful."

This stonehead fish is actually a yellow croaker. In the twenty-first century, it was not considered a delicacy and was affordable for most households. However, in this era, it was a luxury enjoyed only by the wealthy outside of riverbank areas. The taste was indeed delicious. Whether it was due to the water quality or the cooking method, the fish was exceptionally fresh.

Although it was something she used to eat until she was sick of it, now she could enjoy it thanks to the emperor's favor. It was clear that because she had just served the emperor last night, he immediately bestowed rewards upon her, indicating his fondness for her. Regardless of how long this favor would last, she had earned it.

However, the speed at which news spread within the palace was remarkable. It had only been a few hours since the emperor bestowed gifts on her, yet even the Sishan kitchen knew about it. Ma Sishan eagerly sent over a special dish for her.

Fan Xueyao thought about it but only ate the belly part of the fish and did not touch the rest. Yellow croakers have many bones, and without being fried to soften the small bones, they were inconvenient to eat when steamed. Spitting out the bones was somewhat ungraceful. However, since this dish was specially prepared for her by the Sishan kitchen, sending it back barely touched would be disrespectful. Moreover, this was a rare delicacy she usually couldn't enjoy, and returning it would mean wasting it. It would be better if her own people in the palace could eat it.

She pushed the silver platter with the stonehead fish towards the attendant and said, "Take this fish away. You can eat it later. Even if there's a fishy smell, it doesn't matter. Just rinse your mouth with tea and chew some tea leaves afterward."

Huaping and the others immediately thanked her. They hadn't tasted fish for years, as they avoided any food that might leave an odor. However, Fan Xueyao's kindness allowed them to indulge without worry. This was a stonehead fish, not included in her personal rations, and they were delighted.

They happily carried the fish to the inner kitchen, instructing the young palace maid to keep it warm, planning to share it after serving Fan Xueyao.

After finishing her meal, Fan Xueyao dismissed the attendants to eat their own meals while she took a walk around the courtyard. The attendants hurriedly ate until they were nearly full, then carefully washed and refreshed themselves before returning to serve her.

After practicing in the east wing, Fan Xueyao called for hot water to bathe. Her habit was to bathe daily and wash her hair every other day. Sometimes, using hair oil made her feel greasy, even if her scalp wasn't itchy. She would sometimes wash her hair daily. However, in this era, people were either too poor or too busy, and without hairdryers, they rarely washed their hair. Women especially found it troublesome to dry their long hair, leading to headaches if left damp. Thus, they washed their hair infrequently.

In the Fan family, her cousins often criticized her for being overly particular about bathing and washing her hair.

Before bathing, Fan Xueyao remembered something and called Xiaohong over. "Go ask Huaping to open the black lacquer box with the painting of Chang'e flying to the moon. Inside are several porcelain bottles; bring me the white one."

The box was in the cabinet. Xiaohong told Huaping, who immediately fetched the key, opened the cabinet, and retrieved the box. The box had three layers, with sixteen small square compartments on the top two rows and a long compartment below, containing six identical small porcelain bottles—two white, two celadon, and two blue.

Huaping took one of the white porcelain bottles, closed the box, locked it, and returned it to the cabinet, then handed the bottle to Xiaohong.

"Is this the one, Beauty?" Xiaohong returned, presenting the white porcelain bottle with both hands.

"Yes, this is it," Fan Xueyao nodded, smiling as she took it. The small porcelain bottle fit perfectly in her hand, with her thumb touching her middle finger. Opening the bottle, a strong floral scent filled the air. Taking a deep breath, the fragrance of jasmine permeated her lungs.

"This is..." Xiaohong and Xiaojin were stunned, instinctively sniffing the air. The scent was so real, like actual jasmine flowers, unlike any perfumes or powders.

"It's essential oil," Fan Xueyao explained briefly, tilting the bottle to drop two drops into the bathwater.

A small bottle of essential oil was worth several dozen taels of silver. She cherished it, as she had cultivated flowers on her estate and hired farmers to tend them. Despite careful cultivation, the yield was minimal.

The distillation process in this era was rudimentary, and without greenhouse technology, flower production was far less than in modern times. Pest infestations further reduced the yield, making the oil precious. She used it sparingly, savoring its fragrance. A single drop sufficed to fill the room with scent.

"So fragrant, just like real jasmine flowers, no, even more fragrant," Xiaohong inhaled deeply, trying to absorb all the scent.

Of course, it was fragrant; otherwise, why spend so much on essential oil?

Fan Xueyao's eyes curved into a smile, beautiful beyond measure. While expensive, the benefits were significant. Otherwise, she could simply wear jasmine flowers for fragrance. Essential oil provided a stronger scent and remained aromatic year-round if stored properly. Unlike natural jasmine flowers, which bloomed for only a short period.

Moreover, essential oil lacked the severe side effects of incense pills. Incense pills were fragrant but contained ingredients unsuitable for prolonged use. Historical figures like Feiyan and Heduo suffered infertility from using scented pills. No matter how favored they were, without heirs, their favor was fleeting.

Fan Xueyao sought both imperial favor and children. She wanted her glory to extend beyond herself to her descendants, ensuring future emperors of Daliang descended from her lineage.

After bathing, Fan Xueyao applied a nourishing and whitening cream. Her flawless skin relied not only on milk baths but also on various skincare routines. This improved cream was crucial for maintaining her smooth and fair complexion.

Applying the cream required effort, ensuring even coverage and massaging it in. At home, Yanran and Lengxiang assisted her, but in the palace, four attendants took over this task.

Among the four attendants, she entrusted this duty to Huaping.

Following Fan Xueyao's instructions, Huaping washed her hands thoroughly with fragrant soap, then moisturized them, warming them before applying the cream.

Inside the brightly lit hall, screened off, Fan Xueyao undressed and lay on the couch. Huaping knelt beside her, carefully scooping a dollop of cream and applying it to her neck and back. Starting from the neck, she covered every inch of skin, gently massaging it in.

Her body, curvaceous and fair, glowed under the candlelight, resembling snow under the moon. The four attendants were mesmerized, their faces flushed and hearts racing, yet unable to look away. When a woman is too beautiful, even women of the same gender are captivated.

The process was both lengthy and comfortable, almost lulling Fan Xueyao to sleep. However, she had to turn over, facing the bright candles, preventing her from falling asleep.

Afterward, Fan Xueyao put on her silk nightgown and went to bed. The nightgown was spaghetti-strapped, reaching her calves, with a crescent-shaped hem. She also had a matching robe, which she wore when moving around the room, tying the belt to cover herself modestly.

When she changed into the nightgown, Huaping and the others were stunned, unsure whether to object or remain silent. Ultimately, fearing she might be punished for wearing such revealing clothing, they timidly reminded her it was inappropriate.

Fan Xueyao patiently reassured them, continuing to wear the nightgown. Their concern raised their standing in her heart.

While she intended to wear it regardless, their advice showed their loyalty. It was better than ignoring her, which would be sycophantic. Though honest words may be harsh, they come from a good place. Whether to heed them was her choice.

At night, Fan Xueyao kept only Huaping awake, dismissing Qiaoqiao, Zhuzhu, and Su'e to rest. Huaping laid a felt mat against the wall, sat cross-legged, and leaned against the wall, closing her eyes. The uncomfortable position ensured she would wake easily at any sound.

If Fan Xueyao needed water or had to get up during the night, Huaping could immediately light a lamp and assist her.

She woke early, dismissed everyone, and practiced her exercises alone in the bedroom. After stretching and sweating, she called for assistance to wash and dress. Since she didn't need to go out, she opted for a simple hairstyle, letting Zhuzhu create a small piled cloud bun without a heavy false bun. She chose a butterfly-themed set of jewelry, including a gold hairpin with colored gems, a pearl-embellished green turquoise flower pin, and four small flower pins with pink tourmaline stamens. She put away the remaining accessories. These were genuine gold pieces, heavy and worn only on special occasions.

The pine-green lotus-patterned brocade jacket made her appear gentle and noble. The overall look was elegant and lively, making her feel comfortable and presentable.

After breakfast, Su'e massaged her shoulders and cautiously mentioned that the emperor had summoned Wei Zhaoyi, the niece of Empress Dowager Wei, the previous night. Fan Xueyao was unsurprised, having predicted the emperor would summon someone else after her. The likely candidates were Changsun Zhaoyi, Wei Zhaoyi, Jiang Jieyu, Shen Jieyu, and Zhang Jieyu. Whoever it was, she wasn't surprised.

She had never met Wei Zhaoyi closely, only seen her from afar. She seemed attractive, though her personality was unknown. Rumored to have the temperament of a noble lady, it was common among aristocratic women.

Reflecting quickly, Fan Xueyao smiled gently and spoke calmly, "You haven't left the palace since yesterday. Where did you hear this?"

Su'e spoke more cautiously, choosing her words carefully, "Chuntao and Hong Xiao mentioned it earlier, and Hong Xiao later told me."

"Oh?" Fan Xueyao was surprised and asked, "Chuntao serves in the front hall, right? How did she find out?"

"I don't know, Beauty. Should we call Chuntao to ask her directly?"

Chapter 22: The Second Time

"A servant doesn't know either. Should we call Chuntao and ask her directly, my lady?"

"Hmm... alright." Fan Xueyao thought for a moment and decided it would be good to ask Chuntao. She had assigned Chuntao to the front because she heard that Chuntao was quick-witted and smart. On one hand, she wanted someone smart to handle the front, reducing the chances of mistakes. On the other hand, she wanted to observe Chuntao's character and see if she could be trusted. If she proved useful and smart, she could become a confidante.

Hua Ping went outside to call Hong Xiao, who was tending to the flowers in the courtyard, to summon Chuntao to the back. Hong Xiao immediately left, and soon Chuntao arrived.

Chuntao was petite with a round face, looking more like thirteen or fourteen despite being sixteen. Though not particularly striking, she had learned the rules well. Upon entering, she bowed respectfully to Fan Xueyao and wished her well.

Fan Xueyao didn't deliberately make things difficult for her and let her rise after the formalities.

"Thank you, my lady." Chuntao curtsied again, slightly lowering her chin and keeping her eyes downcast, every gesture showing respect.

Then Fan Xueyao repeated her earlier question. Chuntao replied, "I used to serve Aunt Meng Qing. At the time, Aunt Meng managed ten young maidservants, including me. We were close and called each other sisters. Aunt Meng and Lady Wang had a deep friendship and often interacted. This morning, my sisters came to give me hair ribbons and scented soap, and they mentioned this incident."

Her tone was calm, as if describing something mundane, but there was a hint of pride in her voice. It wasn't obvious, but those who paid attention could detect it. Despite her youth, Chuntao was ambitious. Her words conveyed a clear message, easily understood by anyone with a bit of sense.

Chuntao had deliberately passed the message through Hong Xiao to Su'e, and then to Fan Xueyao, to reveal her network of connections. Fan Xueyao understood the implications and nodded noncommittally.

Indeed, everyone should not be underestimated. Even though Chuntao was just a minor figure, a fifteen- or sixteen-year-old girl, her sources of information were likely broader than some of the higher-ranking ladies. A single aunt managing several maidservants, who in turn had their own connections, formed an extensive intelligence network. These first-hand reports often reached the upper echelons only after multiple layers of transmission.

Fan Xueyao intended to cultivate her own informants and listened to Chuntao's intentions, realizing that Chuntao was merely seeking favor rather than acting as a spy. She decided to accept Chuntao's offer of loyalty.

Hua Ping opened the cabinet containing valuables and brought out ten taels of silver. Fan Xueyao, with a warm expression, said, "True friendship lies in mutual support and reciprocation. Share this silver with your sisters. Use it for tea or cosmetics. Your sisters even brought you hair ribbons, so you should return the favor."

Chuntao politely declined at first but then accepted the gift gratefully. They both knew this money was not for tea or cosmetics; it symbolized something deeper.

After a few more words, Fan Xueyao dismissed Chuntao. Although she accepted Chuntao's loyalty, she did not change her position. Chuntao continued to serve in the front hall, but occasionally came to the back hall to pass messages to Hua Ping or Su'e. For important and confidential matters, she would report directly to Fan Xueyao.

Fan Xueyao was not in a rush to gain favor. Besides grooming and exercise, she focused on observing the twelve maidservants in the hall. To her surprise, only Hong Xiao had been specifically assigned to her by Empress Xu, while the others were regular assignments. Hong Xiao was not a spy but an observer sent by the empress to assess her character.

Knowing Hong Xiao's background, Fan Xueyao was not in a hurry to deal with her. While she observed the maidservants, they also observed her. Hua Ping, being particularly perceptive, quickly noticed that Fan Xueyao was not only beautiful but also skilled in music, chess, calligraphy, and embroidery. Sometimes, when admiring flowers or scenery, she would recite poetry, which sounded elegant even if Hua Ping didn't fully understand it.

Such a remarkable beauty, yet humble and unpretentious, was almost perfect except for her modest background. However, the Great Liang dynasty restricted the origins of concubines to prevent the rise of powerful in-laws. Most concubines came from ordinary backgrounds, typically fifth rank, which was neither high nor low. This was not a disadvantage.

Hua Ping believed Fan Xueyao would have a bright future and decided to serve her diligently to secure her position as a trusted senior maid.

After several days of fulfilling political obligations by visiting newly appointed concubines, Chu Nan finally had the freedom to visit his favored concubines. After finishing his official duties, he instructed Li Huairen to inform the Office of Bedchamber Affairs that he would spend the night with Fan Xueyao. Li Huairen, recognizing Fan Xueyao's current favor, promptly went to the office.

Inside the Office of Bedchamber Affairs, Lu Shangqin and Ge Shangqin sat on a couch discussing matters with several female officials. A young maid entered to announce, "The two Shangqins, Eunuch Li from the imperial presence has arrived."

Lu Shangqin and Ge Shangqin exchanged glances, knowing this was an imperial decree, but unsure whom the emperor had chosen. Having visited all the new high-ranking concubines, the choice now depended on his preferences.

Without hesitation, they said, "Please invite Eunuch Li in."

They stood up and greeted Li Huairen as he entered. Li Huairen delivered the emperor's decree and then sat down at their invitation.

"The emperor has summoned Concubine Fan for tonight. Please accompany her to the palace."

They acknowledged, knowing this was part of their duty. Both had seen Fan Xueyao and were impressed by her elegance and beauty. Such a stunning woman, even they felt their hearts race.

But they wondered if the emperor truly favored her or was simply charmed by her beauty.

Uncertain, they asked Li Huairen for clarity.

"Can't you tell?" Li Huairen smiled.

They admitted their uncertainty and sought his advice.

Li Huairen chuckled, "Look at the time. What hour is it?"

Confused, they looked at each other. Ge Shangqin quickly understood and thanked Li Huairen.

Li Huairen laughed and left after having tea.

Lu Shangqin and Ge Shangqin saw him off, then Lu Shangqin asked what Li Huairen meant.

"Don't you see? He made it clear," Ge Shangqin reminded her.

Lu Shangqin still didn't understand, frowning.

Ge Shangqin explained, "What hour is it?"

"About midday, but—" Lu Shangqin paused, suddenly understanding.

Ge Shangqin finished, "When does Eunuch Li usually deliver decrees before the afternoon? The emperor sent him urgently, indicating his true feelings."

Lu Shangqin finally understood, feeling both relieved and amused.

"He serves the emperor, so he must be cautious," Ge Shangqin added, reminding Lu Shangqin of their roles.

They resumed their meeting, gathering female officials to continue their work until the afternoon, then selected a few dignified maidservants to accompany them to the Spreading Fragrance Hall.

Fan Xueyao had been enjoying her days, free from scrutiny and interruptions. She spent her time sewing, practicing calligraphy, painting, and playing games. She also practiced dance for an hour daily to maintain her physique and skills.

When the Office of Bedchamber Affairs arrived, she was not surprised. Although the emperor had not summoned her recently, she sensed that the time had come.

That evening, as Fan Xueyao was carried to the Hongning Palace in a sedan chair, Chu Nan was reading under bright candlelight. In his private quarters, he appeared relaxed, sitting casually with his legs crossed and leaning against the armrest.

Chapter 23: Fool

Perfection does not exist in this world. Although Chu Nan was born into nobility and is now the ruler of the land, he is still human, and humans are never perfect.

In Fan Xueyao's eyes, Chu Nan wasn't particularly tall, but he wasn't short either. He stood at about one meter seventy-five, which was average in her previous life but considered tall in this era.

He had well-proportioned features, thick eyebrows, and piercing eyes that exuded an aura of authority. When he smiled, he appeared gentle and refined. His muscles were firm, his build strong, and though not towering, he had a distinctly masculine presence. This appealed to Fan Xueyao's taste; she believed men should be manly, not effeminate.

Under the candlelight, Chu Nan looked relaxed. Fan Xueyao stepped forward to greet him with a bow.

"Rise."

Fan Xueyao moved closer, ready to serve Chu Nan. He put down his book, leaned forward, and pulled her to sit beside him. "You've been in the palace for some days now. Are you getting used to it?"

Fan Xueyao lifted her head, revealing a smooth, fair face. Her clear, moist eyes blinked shyly. "The Spreading Fragrance Hall is wonderful. The palace attendants have been very attentive, and I am quite comfortable here." She couldn't help but smile, as if she knew she shouldn't but couldn't contain her excitement. Chu Nan's gaze softened.

"If there's anything inconvenient or uncomfortable, don't keep it to yourself. Speak to the Empress," he added, worried that her young age might make her too shy to voice any discomfort.

Fan Xueyao nodded obediently, the pearl hairpin on her bun swaying gently, catching Chu Nan's attention. Seeing the jewelry she wore, his smile widened, his tone light and joyful. "Do you like the jewelry?"

She wore a delicate set of peach blossom accessories, including a small pearl hairpin and another pin, complementing her light red and light green robe. The pin featured three blooming peach blossoms surrounding a bud, with jade leaves carved from turquoise. The peach blossoms were crafted from pale pink peach blossom stones, with a tiny red coral bead in the center. The entire piece was both elegant and luxurious, appealing to any woman.

Fan Xueyao instinctively touched the hairpin, her eyes brightening with joy.

"I love it!" she exclaimed, nodding eagerly. "I'll wear it all the time." Realizing her enthusiasm might seem too direct, she bit her lip and blushed, averting her gaze.

Chu Nan chuckled. "Fool, if you say you'll always wear it, what will you do when I give you more jewelry?"

Fan Xueyao blinked, then said seriously, "But this is the first gift from Your Majesty. It holds great sentimental value. No matter how precious future gifts may be, they won't surpass the significance of this one."

Chu Nan felt a warmth in his heart, reaching out to hold her hand. Surprised by its softness, he held it tightly, savoring the delicate touch.

"Fool," he repeated, this time with a tender tone.

From a young age, he learned self-restraint. As a child, his mother taught him to speak less to avoid mistakes. He ate whatever was given, never asking for more. Even when ill, he endured hunger without complaint, fearing his mother's disapproval. As he grew older, dealing with ministers required hiding his true feelings, presenting himself as compassionate and diligent. Facing the late emperor, he had to suppress his disapproval, knowing that any misstep could cost him his position.

Self-restraint became second nature, ingrained deeply. He mastered the art of appointing capable officials, accepting advice, and governing diligently. The mask he wore became part of him, even convincing himself of his own persona. Today, he realized that someone could still stir his emotions.

A drop of water falling into a long-still pond created ripples, subtle yet undeniable. Over time, these drops could disrupt the calm waters entirely.

His heart stirred, but Chu Nan maintained his composure, speaking softly. "Your hands feel cold. Is the night air chilly?" He continued holding her hand.

"Do they?" Fan Xueyao blinked, seemingly unaware of his momentary lapse. "Perhaps... I'm a bit nervous," she admitted, lowering her head shyly, then peeking up at him, her timid demeanor reminiscent of a kitten away from its mother.

Chu Nan paused, his smile deepening. His past consorts always tried to present their best selves, maintaining poise and grace even when nervous. Only Fan Xueyao was so candid, unafraid to reveal her true feelings. Was she too innocent or did she trust him?

Recalling the selection records, he remembered the description of Fan Xueyao. Trust seemed the most likely explanation. Because she trusted him, she didn't hide her feelings.

"You..." Chu Nan sighed, deciding that her trust was refreshing. Interacting with unfeeling consorts was tiresome; having someone genuine made things easier. In the imperial court, he had to maintain his dignity; in the palace, he wanted genuine connection.

As she leaned against him, her shy expression contrasting with her compliant actions, Chu Nan felt his heart stir.

He intended to chat, but seeing her blush like a rain-washed pink lotus, his desire surged. He embraced her tighter, leaning down to kiss her soft, rosy lips. They were like ripe cherries, delicate and inviting. The kiss was as sweet as he imagined, her lips smooth and fragrant.

Chu Nan's technique was somewhat clumsy, almost rough, pulling her tongue slightly. Fan Xueyao relaxed, closing her eyes and guiding him gently. Gradually, he found rhythm, kissing more tenderly, unwilling to let go.

After a long kiss, both were breathless. Fan Xueyao's cheeks flushed, her misty eyes gazing at him adoringly.

Seeing her flushed and moist-eyed, Chu Nan couldn't resist. Without waiting to enter the bedroom, he laid her down on the couch and proceeded.

The first time was slow, as Chu Nan had been attended to for several nights. But as the emperor, he had access to nourishing elixirs, keeping him healthy and energetic. With his young vigor and attraction to her, one night was never enough.

Afterward, Fan Xueyao trembled, supported by a chambermaid. Lying in bed, she felt limp, while Chu Nan had already washed and settled in.

Traditionally, consorts slept separately from the emperor, maintaining distance. Fan Xueyao prepared to sleep under her own covers, but Chu Nan pulled her into his. Though unspoken, this was clearly allowed. Fan Xueyao didn't protest, nestling into the blankets, turning toward him.

Chu Nan slept inside, while she slept outside, ready to serve him if needed. Fan Xueyao rarely moved in her sleep, a habit formed during her previous life, where sleeping on sofas required stillness to avoid falling off.

Both slept soundly until morning, when Chu Nan's movements woke her. Looking out the window, she saw the dark sky tinged with blue. It was dawn, and Chu Nan was rising early, even before her.

Chapter 24: Daily Life

The concubines had the duty to serve the emperor. The last time, Fan Xueyao had fallen asleep from exhaustion and the emperor hadn't called for her. This time, since she was awake, she couldn't stay in bed any longer and got up to help Chu Nan wash and dress.

Chu Nan waved his hand, stopping her. "It's still early. You should go back to sleep. Let the palace attendants take care of me." Last night had been no less intense than their first time. She had even needed assistance to bathe, so why make her get up when there were attendants available?

Fan Xueyao was indeed tired, and she wasn't one to show servility. Why insist on serving him when the emperor himself had given her permission to rest? So, she took the opportunity to continue sleeping.

The commotion inside the room alerted the attendants waiting outside, who immediately brought in the toiletries. A group of palace maids entered with copper basins, pots, mouthwash bowls, towels, fragrant ointments, soap, tooth powder, and toothbrushes. They moved in an orderly manner, serving Chu Nan silently and efficiently, showing their excellent training.

Despite their quiet movements, Yao'niang found it noisy. She listened to the thoughts of everyone, including Chu Nan, as if they were a storm of chaos. The noise gave her a headache, but she couldn't stop listening. She had to sift through the cacophony to find useful information, pretending to be asleep.

As she pretended, the emperor finished his ablutions, and most of the attendants left, leaving the bedroom much quieter. Fan Xueyao remained with her eyes closed and eventually fell asleep again.

When she woke up, it was already half an hour later. Chu Nan had granted her another fragrant bath, this time with the more expensive Seven-Aroma Bath. Last time, without preparation, she had worn the same clothes back after bathing. Although she changed into clean ones upon returning to her own quarters, it still seemed like a lapse in service. This time, the attendants from Hongning Palace went to Spreading Fragrance Hall early in the morning to fetch a new set of clothes for her, ensuring she didn't have to wear the same dirty clothes again.

Seeing their calm demeanor, it seemed like a routine task. Some people might boast about accomplishing such minor tasks, but these attendants performed their duties flawlessly and remained composed. Their indifference to praise or criticism impressed Fan Xueyao greatly.

Indeed, they were close attendants of the emperor, not only attentive and considerate but also possessed a dignity that surpassed ordinary maids. Her own attendants had much to learn from them.

After fulfilling his obligations, Chu Nan could now choose his concubines freely. He alternated between those he had already favored and occasionally called upon new ones. Every few days, he would summon Fan Xueyao.

Over the next two to three months, the situation in the palace settled. It became clear that among the new concubines, although Zhaoyi Changsun and Zhaoyi Wei had high initial ranks, Fan Xueyao received the most favor.

Previously, Wan Zhaoyi and Jie Yu Yu had the most frequent visits, but now it was Fan Xueyao who was summoned the most. Out of ten times a month, seven or eight were for her. Half of the emperor's attention was on her.

Fan Xueyao gained favor quietly. Apart from occasional visits to the empress's quarters, she stayed in Spreading Fragrance Hall, never showing off her status. People outside were curious about her, but little news came out of Spreading Fragrance Hall, leaving many wondering whether she was simply modest or hiding due to fear.

Regardless of the outside world, Fan Xueyao lived her life leisurely. Recently, she had become passionate about embroidery, spending hours each day sewing intricate patterns. Now, everyone could see that she was favored by the emperor, and even if they didn't fawn over her, they wouldn't dare offend her. For example, when she asked Su'e and Zhuzhu to fetch embroidery supplies from the Shang Gong Bureau, they promptly delivered everything she needed—fabric, thread, needles, hoops, frames, scissors, and charcoal pencils. They even included several beautifully designed patterns.

Currently, she was working on a cushion cover made of dark blue satin, with a pattern of flowers and birds she had drawn herself. The design featured magnolias, crabapples, peonies, camellias, lingzhi mushrooms, bamboo, daylilies, cranes, pheasants, sparrows, and magpies.

Huaping held the handkerchief she had embroidered earlier, admiring it repeatedly. On the ivory-colored silk, a gnarled grapevine curled around, with a squirrel leaping on it, seemingly reaching for ripe grapes. The lively posture and bright eyes captured the squirrel's alertness and eagerness perfectly.

Huaping marveled, "Such exquisite embroidery! It's a shame to use it merely as a handkerchief. Beauty, shall I frame it and hang it on the wall?"

Fan Xueyao sat on her embroidery stool, focused on her work. Hearing this, she straightened up, smiling warmly. Her eyes were clear like crystal, her pupils beautiful like black pearls.

"An embroidered handkerchief can't be framed; it would be laughed at. It's just a piece of embroidery. If you like it, keep it."

"Beauty, you're really giving it to me?" Huaping's cheeks flushed with joy, clearly delighted.

Fan Xueyao turned back, her smile deepening. "Look how excited you are. Anyone seeing this would think I'm being stingy. Just a handkerchief, and you're this happy."

"This is your embroidery, and it's so skillful that even the officials in charge of embroidery feel ashamed. How could I not be thrilled? I won't use it to wipe my face. I want to frame it and admire it every day," Huaping said happily, carefully folding the handkerchief.

Fan Xueyao shook her head, not wanting to argue further, and returned to her embroidery. She planned to create a set of embroidered cushions, starting with the cushion cover. She also wanted to make pillows and backrests to replace the hard armrests.

As the mistress worked tirelessly, her attendants couldn't idle either. While Fan Xueyao focused on the large embroidery, they handled smaller tasks like hemming. The palace provided clothing and accessories, but if one wasn't favored, the quality might suffer. However, with Fan Xueyao's status, they always ensured she received the best.

The palace styles were repetitive, lacking novelty. Fan Xueyao preferred simpler designs, especially for summer. She drew new patterns, making small changes to the collars, hems, and cuffs, creating a more delicate and elegant look.

She designed simple dresses like white gauze skirts with embroidered edges, plain white silk skirts, and light chiffon skirts. Sewing these was straightforward, so she assigned the task to Su'e and Qiaoqiao. Huaping and Zhuzhu were skilled at embroidery, so she gave them the collars and sleeves to work on.

While sewing, Fan Xueyao occasionally glanced at the four main attendants. Zhuzhu was quiet, sitting on a small stool and focusing on her embroidery. Unlike Su'e and Qiaoqiao, who chatted while sewing, Zhuzhu rarely spoke but did her job meticulously.

Her study was always well-organized, with calligraphy papers neatly bound and paintings stored properly. She was reliable, impressing Fan Xueyao with her efficiency.

Huaping was capable and diligent, handling tasks smoothly and respectfully. She never used her position to bully others. Fan Xueyao began to rely on her more, entrusting her with important matters. Huaping managed everything well without overstepping her boundaries.

After observing for some time, Fan Xueyao confirmed Huaping's reliability and promoted her to her chief attendant.

After sewing for a while, Fan Xueyao felt her waist and abdomen becoming hot and stiff. She put down her needle and walked around, stretching. The attendants quickly followed, ready to serve her. Huaping lifted the teacup lid, finding it cold. She was about to replace it with a warm cup, but Fan Xueyao stopped her.

"Beauty, cold tea is bad for your stomach. Let me bring you a warm cup," Huaping advised.

"No need. This will do. It's getting hot, and warm tea is too much," Fan Xueyao said. It was early summer, and she didn't want to drink scalding tea. She took the cup and sipped the lukewarm tea, letting it warm in her mouth before swallowing.

After finishing the cup, she felt refreshed and the heat subsided. She raised her sleeve, revealing her fair wrist, and gently fanned herself.

"The weather is getting hotter. Even sitting still makes you sweat. When will the palace start providing ice for cooling?" Despite the coolness of ancient buildings, summer temperatures could be quite high without fans or air conditioning.

Chapter 25: Eating

"Does the beauty feel hot? Indeed, these past few days have been sunny with strong sunlight, making it quite warm. Let us servants fan you to cool down. The ice supply is still some days away; it's just after the Summer Solstice, and the palace only starts supplying ice to the halls after Minor Heat."

Hua Ping and the other palace maids had to work, wearing thicker clothes than Fan Xueyao, tightly wrapped, with beads of sweat on their foreheads, even makeup couldn't hide the slight sheen of oil.

Fan Xueyao calculated the days; today was the twelfth of May, ten days away from Minor Heat when ice would be supplied. It hadn't rained in these days, and the sun was intense, making everything dry and hot. Even in the early morning or late evening, she didn't like going out into the courtyard much.

If she asked the emperor, he would surely grant her favor due to his affection for her. However, people's tolerance and indulgence have limits. Using the emperor's favor for something as trivial as ice wouldn't be wise. Moreover, everyone in the palace, from the Empress down to the lesser concubines, were waiting for the ice supply. If she, a mere beauty favored by the emperor, went to ask for ice early, it would invite ridicule and criticism. The emperor might grant her ice, but the Empress could then punish her for being disrespectful and improper.

She decided to wait patiently until Minor Heat. While using ice wasn't possible, having some cold drinks was still an option.

"Hua Ping, you and Zhu Zhu go to the Kitchen Office and see if they have any beverages. Choose one that is sour and sweet to help cool down, and bring back a jar."

Hua Ping noted this, gestured for Xiaohong to take over her duties, and then went to the Kitchen Office with Zhu Zhu.

In the Kitchen Office, Zhou Dianshan was in the courtyard. Recognizing Hua Ping as Fan Xueyao's chief maid, he greeted them warmly, "It's so hot outside, why did you two come to this scorching kitchen?"

Hua Ping smiled, "Our beauty feels uncomfortable due to the heat, so she sent me to ask if there are any beverages available. We'd like to bring back a jar for her to drink and cool down. Do you have anything ready?"

"We do, we do! We have plenty of beverages and cool water at this time." Zhou Dianshan, around thirty years old, fair-skinned and plump, looked very kind. He called over a young maid to fetch a clean jar and then listed more than a dozen beverages, asking Hua Ping:

"We have Gan Dou Soup, Bean Water, Deer Pear Juice, Plum Water, Ginger Honey Water, Papaya Juice, Shenxiang Water, Lychee Syrup, Bitter Water, Golden Orange Balls, Snow-soaked Plum Drink, Wu Ling Da Shun Powder, Xiang Ru Drink, Zi Su Drink... Which one does your beauty prefer?"

Hua Ping thought for a moment. She had served Fan Xueyao for a short time and couldn't discern her preferences clearly. She decided to try the Snow-soaked Plum Drink, as Fan Xueyao often enjoyed a few sour cherries or plums. The Snow-soaked Plum Drink, made with plums and nectarine, should suit her taste.

"Just the Snow-soaked Plum Drink, please," Hua Ping said with a smile.

Soon, a young maid returned with a shiny black-glazed jar with golden handles. Zhou Dianshan filled it with the Snow-soaked Plum Drink and handed it to Hua Ping along with a small paper packet. He said kindly, "These are some fruits we made in the kitchen. They may not look great, but they taste good. Take them and try them."

Hua Ping accepted them gratefully and left with Zhu Zhu.

Back at the Spreading Fragrance Hall, Hua Ping took the jar to the inner kitchen and had the maids chill it with well water. After half an hour, she brought it to the back hall for Fan Xueyao. Then she reported to Fan Xueyao and opened the paper packet in front of her, "This is from Zhou Dianshan in the Kitchen Office. He said they were imperfect and gave them to us to taste." Inside the packet were several fruits: abalone wrapped in honey, sugar threads, honey sesame balls, chestnut yellow, and ginger candy.

Fan Xueyao glanced at them briefly and placed a piece on the chessboard. "Since it's from Zhou Dianshan, you can share and eat them while they're fresh."

The maids thanked her happily and gathered to share the fruits, each picking their favorites.

Sugar in the palace was strictly rationed, and the Kitchen Office needed to request it in writing. Usually, such delicacies were reserved for the imperial family, and the maids rarely got to enjoy them except during festivals. When the Kitchen Office made mistakes, the imperfect fruits were either discarded or shared among the staff. These "imperfect" fruits were actually quite good-looking.

Hua Ping thought about this and took a bite of the chestnut yellow. It tasted delicious indeed.

They never used to get such fine fruits before serving Fan Xueyao. She liked sweets but disliked overly sweet foods. These fruits were concentrated with sugar syrup, and she only ate one occasionally. The rest ended up in the maids' bellies.

After half an hour, the chilled Snow-soaked Plum Drink was brought in. Fan Xueyao sipped the refreshing drink, tasting the flavors of plum and apple, with a hint of licorice. The combination was light and refreshing, and it smelled delightful.

Drinking too much cold food could harm the stomach, especially for women who are naturally yin. Although it tasted good, Fan Xueyao only had a bowl and stopped.

Later, the Kitchen Office delivered the evening meal. Looking at the steaming hot dishes and greasy dried meat, Fan Xueyao felt full already. She couldn't skip the meal, so she had Hua Ping bring in the tea she had prepared earlier. She mixed the tea with rice, making it lukewarm, and ate a few bites with cherry compote. She also had a bit of wine-marinated pork and grilled quail, eating until she was six-tenths full before calling it quits.

Continuing like this wasn't sustainable. The Kitchen Office served the entire palace, and occasional requests were acceptable. But despite her favored status, she couldn't keep requesting special meals. She decided to improve her inner kitchen, which had four maids. With proper training, they could handle the cooking. It would be more convenient to adjust menus and experiment with new dishes.

Thinking this, she began planning summer dishes, listing ingredients and instructing the inner kitchen to fetch supplies daily. Once they learned the recipes, she could simply order what she wanted. However, the inner kitchen also cooked for the maids, totaling about a dozen people, which seemed overwhelming for four maids. She decided to send two to the Kitchen Office for assistance, even without culinary skills, to help with basic tasks.

After the palace gates closed, Fan Xueyao summoned all twelve maids to the back hall. Sitting on a small couch, she asked, "Fetching meals from the Kitchen Office isn't always convenient. I plan to add helpers to the inner kitchen, so we can prepare our own meals here. Does anyone have experience in the kitchen?"

Xiaoyue, Yue Gu, and Xiaojin stepped forward.

Among the twelve maids, four came from noble families, while the remaining eight were from commoners. Xiaoyue, Yue Gu, and Xiaojin were part of the latter group. Fan Xueyao learned that they had helped in the kitchen at home, though they couldn't cook, they could handle basic tasks.

Even basic tasks were enough, as there were experienced cooks. Xiaojin was responsible for washing, while Yue Gu tended to the garden. Xiaoyue, who originally worked in the teahouse, was simpler. Fan Xueyao decided to have Xiaojin and Xiaoyue assist in the inner kitchen besides their regular duties. As a reward, she promised to give them an extra two hundred coins monthly, on top of their standard allowance.

Though two hundred coins seemed little, it was a quarter of their usual allowance of eight hundred coins. Palace maids sought favor to gain rewards and recognition. Hearing about the extra money, both were delighted and eagerly accepted the task. After leaving the hall, they immediately went to the inner kitchen to discuss the matter with the four maids.

Writing a menu was challenging, as many ingredients weren't available yet, and the palace had strict rules. Only beef and mutton were eaten, not pork. Many dishes she knew used pork, which was problematic. Wild boar, though related to domestic pigs, had different textures and tastes.

After two days, Fan Xueyao carefully wrote down a dozen recipes and listed the ingredients. Hua Ping took the list with her waist token to the supply offices to fetch the ingredients.

Coincidentally, it was the season for fresh shad, which could be steamed or braised. Fan Xueyao had a poor appetite lately and craved something light. Two dishes on the menu were cold salads, including asparagus with shrimp. The shrimp were wild and fresh, sweet and succulent. Seeing how fresh they were, she added another dish of stir-fried shrimp.

These dishes were relatively simple. She supervised and provided guidance, and after a few attempts, the maids managed to prepare the dishes. That evening, Fan Xueyao enjoyed a hearty meal. Her favorite was the steamed shad, tired of fish soups and unwilling to eat raw fish slices. She relished the large pieces of fish. The sauce she prepared was salty, slightly sweet, and paired perfectly with the tender and flavorful shad. She finished two palm-sized portions of fish belly, half the asparagus salad, and several stir-fried shrimp. The leftovers were shared among the maids, who praised the dishes enthusiastically. Xiaoyue and Xiaojin were determined to learn the recipes thoroughly, ensuring future security whether inside or outside the palace.

After breakfast, Fan Xueyao read books in her study. Suddenly, Chuntao entered and whispered something to Hua Ping, who then entered the room joyfully.

"Beauty, the emperor has summoned you to the Audience Chamber to serve him. The carriage is already waiting outside."

Chapter 26

"Beauty, His Majesty has summoned you to the Xuan Room to serve him with his writing implements. The sedan chair sent to fetch you is already outside the hall."

"Hmm?" Fan Xueyao rose in surprise, placing her book back on the desk and heading towards the sleeping quarters in the western wing.

She had been in the palace for about two months now and had a general understanding of the situation inside. The emperor was not particularly interested in women, a fact she had come to realize. In the past, he rarely called upon concubines to attend him, showing little interest in such matters, let alone engaging in the elegant pastime of having beauties add fragrance to his study. As far as she knew, even the empress, who was his lawful wife, had never been summoned to accompany him while he wrote. Today, however, he had summoned her to do so, which was quite unusual compared to his usual behavior.

Huaping was overjoyed and instructed Qiaoqiao and Su'e to fetch various seasonal dresses and accessories, intending to dress Fan Xueyao in her finest attire. This was the first time she would be serving the emperor with his writing implements, an honor that even Wan Zhaoyi, who had been the emperor's concubine since his days as the crown prince, had never experienced. It was truly a great honor, one that would surely make other concubines envious.

Seeing the dazzling array of bright yellow, vivid red, and purple dresses that Su'e brought, Fan Xueyao quickly said, "Wearing such flashy clothes, am I going there to serve the emperor or to blind him? Please bring some simpler and more elegant ones."

Su'e slapped her forehead in realization, saying, "Oh, how foolish of me." She hurriedly went to find suitable dresses.

"Aren't there some light-colored silk dresses with floral patterns? Those would be perfect. Also, bring out the blue-green silk skirt."

The dresses were brought, and Fan Xueyao had Huaping and Qiaoqiao try them on together. Seeing that the colors matched well, she nodded. "This set will do. Help me with my hair. We shouldn't keep the palace servants waiting."

Su'e took a carved ivory comb and styled her hair into a floating cloud hairstyle, kneeling behind her and looking at her reflection in the bronze mirror. "Beauty, what accessories should we use today?"

Fan Xueyao had brought her dowry chest when she entered the palace, filled with items her mother Li Rong had collected. After entering the palace, she received additional items according to protocol, and Chu Nan had bestowed a set upon her. Later, the Shang Gong Bureau also presented several individual pieces. Collectively, the number of accessories was quite substantial. Zhu Zhu opened the chests containing the jewelry boxes, pulling out the small drawers and presenting them to Fan Xueyao for selection.

Today's outfit was elegant and fresh, not suited for flashy jewelry. A few days ago, she had mentioned how much she liked the peach blossom accessories given by the emperor, so it wouldn't be appropriate to change her mind too soon. However, wearing the same set repeatedly could lead to visual fatigue, so she decided to mix it up with a few other pieces.

Instead of using the peach blossom hairpins, she chose a smaller gold-encrusted ruby butterfly hairpin from another set. Though smaller and shorter, the design was intricate. The butterfly's body was adorned with rubies, and its wings were delicately shaped. The most unique feature was the fine golden wire used for the butterfly's antennae, each tipped with a pearl. As she walked, the antennae would tremble, creating a delicate and charming effect.

She also added a few peach blossom hairpins scattered throughout her hair and had someone pick a half-blooming jasmine flower to pin in her hair. The result was fresh and captivating, like a delicate orchid in a quiet valley. Though not overly ornate, it had a charming allure that captivated anyone who saw it.

Huaping, Qiaoqiao, Su'e, and Zhu Zhu all smiled and praised her graceful appearance.

They boarded the sedan chair and headed towards the Xuan Room. Upon arrival, Li Huairen, who was outside, hurried down the moon terrace to greet them. After exchanging pleasantries, he said, "Please wait a moment, Beauty, while I inform His Majesty."

"Thank you, Eunuch Li," Fan Xueyao said politely. Li Huairen seemed increasingly respectful and friendly towards her, indicating her status in Chu Nan's heart. Although she didn't know how Chu Nan behaved when she wasn't around, Li Huairen's attitude revealed something.

Li Huairen quickly entered the hall and returned after a few minutes, inviting her in.

Entering the Xuan Room, Fan Xueyao noticed that Chu Nan was not in the central chamber. It was her first visit, and she wasn't sure where he might be. There were no palace maids in the hall, so she waited for a moment before tentatively walking towards the western chamber. There, Chu Nan sat on a couch, a green inkstone desk with several documents in front of him, reading one of them.

He put down the document and waved her over. Seeing the graceful woman with her fair skin and raven hair, his previously stern face broke into a smile, though he didn't realize it himself.

Chu Nan had been reading documents from the political office when Fan Xueyao arrived. He set aside the documents and invited her to sit next to him on the couch.

Fan Xueyao did not refuse, her serene and elegant smile turning sweet as she greeted him with a bow and sat beside him, leaning against his arm. "Your Majesty."

"It's been a few days since we last met. How have you been?" Chu Nan's smile deepened as he wrapped his arm around her.

Fan Xueyao nestled into his embrace, recalling the past few days. "I haven't visited the Empress in a few days. The day before yesterday, I paid my respects to her, and she offered me tea, but I only took a sip."

"The weather is getting hotter, and I dare not wear any makeup or even draw my eyebrows. Otherwise, under the sun, my face would become a mess of white, red, and black, which might scare the Empress."

"Although the food from the kitchen is good, it feels a bit greasy this time of year. With the heat, it's hard to enjoy it. I've been thinking about setting up our own kitchen in the palace to avoid troubling the kitchen staff too much."

As she spoke, her index finger unconsciously caressed Chu Nan's wrist.

Chu Nan, born into nobility and raised in luxury, had skin smoother than many commoners. During intimate moments, she would often hold his waist, feeling the warmth and softness, which always elicited a pleasant sensation.

"Greasy?" Chu Nan frowned slightly, recalling his own menu. "There's no need for such trouble. Your chambers aren't very spacious, and if you start cooking, the smoke would fill your rooms. It would be better to avoid that."

"I have a few dishes that are light and refreshing. Tomorrow, I'll instruct the kitchen to send them to your chambers daily." These dishes were part of the imperial menu, beyond the standard provisions for a beauty.

Receiving food from the emperor was an honor, usually reserved for the empress, favored concubines, and princes and princesses. Daily deliveries were different from occasional gifts. Most people would kneel in gratitude, but Fan Xueyao pouted and shook her head. "No, it would be too ostentatious to have the emperor send food to my chambers every day. It would invite jealousy."

In truth, she simply didn't want to eat the food. Despite being imperial cuisine, it lacked variety and tasted the same. She longed for the diverse modern foods she missed.

She told Chu Nan this to let him know she would be more assertive when requesting ingredients from the supply office.

Chu Nan sighed. "You think too much. Jealousy isn't an issue here. The imperial concubines strive to appear dignified and virtuous, not envious."

Historical examples abounded. Even during the reign of the previous emperor, a favored concubine's sister became jealous and was punished severely.

"Alright, alright..." Fan Xueyao held his hand, blinking and pouting adorably. Her charm was irresistible, and Chu Nan relented.

"But your chambers only have four kitchen maids. They can manage simple meals, but handling full meals might be difficult." Chu Nan thought for a moment. "I'll assign a few more cooks from the kitchen to assist you. Their salaries and supplies will come from my private treasury."

"Is that okay?" Fan Xueyao hesitated, biting her lip. "I'm just a beauty, and receiving such special treatment might cause trouble."

"This is a minor matter. Don't worry too much." Chu Nan dismissed her concerns. As the emperor, he could handle any issues.

Relieved, Fan Xueyao smiled warmly and nestled into Chu Nan's embrace.

Chu Nan hadn't seen Fan Xueyao for a few days due to his busy schedule and the empress's preparations for the Tiankuang Festival. He had missed her and couldn't help but summon her. Now, holding her familiar and gentle form, he felt content.

Fan Xueyao stayed in the Xuan Room for over an hour, but they only conversed intimately, mindful of their surroundings. Before leaving, Chu Nan informed her that he would dine at the Spreading Fragrance Hall that evening. Naturally, it implied more than just dinner.

It was the first time Chu Nan had visited a concubine's residence; the only place he had been to was the empress's Jiaofang Palace. Fan Xueyao was glad she had decorated the Spreading Fragrance Hall beautifully over the past two months.

The important documents from the political office were few, mostly concerning death sentences and commendations for capturing bandits in Hunan. Chu Nan quickly reviewed them and then met with ministers to discuss the flood relief in Shandong. The discussions dragged on until evening, leaving Chu Nan with a headache. Remembering his promise to Fan Xueyao, he decided to visit the Spreading Fragrance Hall to relax.

Considering Fan Xueyao's earlier complaint about the heat, Chu Nan instructed the eunuchs not to notify her and went directly to the hall. As he stepped off the sedan chair, he was greeted by a pleasant aroma and a tangy scent.

The smell made his mouth water, easing his headache and giving him renewed energy. He walked through the front hall into the rear chambers. Fan Xueyao was practicing calligraphy in the eastern study. Chu Nan dismissed Huaping and Su'e, who were about to greet him, and entered the study himself.

Chapter 27: Beware of Purchasing

"Your Majesty."

When Fan Xueyao saw someone enter, she casually lifted her eyes and was instantly startled. She hurriedly circled around the desk to greet him, bowing in respect.

Her posture as she bowed was incredibly graceful and elegant, every movement beautiful. Chu Nan's gaze involuntarily focused on her slender waist and the fullness of her chest. After two breaths, he reached out to help her up and gently wiped away the thin layer of sweat from her forehead.

"You're sweating from the heat. Why didn't you have someone fan you?"

This gesture conveyed a sense of intimacy and affection. Fan Xueyao smiled shyly, her clear, limpid eyes sparkling like autumn water. Her fair skin and red lips, along with the smile at the corner of her mouth, felt like a gentle breeze, melting Chu Nan's heart.

"I was afraid it would distract me. The wind from a fan is different from the natural breeze. It's hard to concentrate, and the constant fanning would disrupt my focus. How could I practice calligraphy then?" As if deliberately avoiding his direct gaze out of shyness, Fan Xueyao slightly turned away, her large, expressive eyes flashing. This action made her look even more endearing.

As Chu Nan had come through the heat of the day, the sun had not yet set, and outside it was sweltering. For those with a cooler constitution, it might just be warm, but Chu Nan, who tended to run hot, was flushed and sweating profusely, even dampening his collar.

Fan Xueyao quickly instructed Huaping and others to fan him. Although the hall was cooler than outside, the intense heat was difficult to dissipate even with their efforts. Fortunately, the palace attendants brought in ice basins. While the imperial concubines' chambers were not yet supplied with ice, the emperor received special treatment.

Huaping, Qiaoqiao, Su'e, and Zhuzhu carried the ice basins closer and stood by them, fanning the cool air towards Chu Nan. The breeze passing over the ice brought a refreshing chill, and soon Chu Nan's body cooled down.

With the heat gone, Chu Nan's mood lightened considerably, and he forgot about the afternoon's frustrations in the Xuan Room.

Thinking of the improved plum juice she had stored in the well, Fan Xueyao asked Qiaoqiao to fetch two bowls from the kitchen for herself and Chu Nan. In this dynasty, there was also a spleen-soothing drink made from dried plums, but it tasted more medicinal than the modern version.

After Fan Xueyao's improvements, the plum juice was much better. She used dried plums, hawthorn, licorice, osmanthus flowers, and rock sugar, which masked the bitter taste of the plums.

Chu Nan initially did not enjoy the spleen-soothing drink made from dried plums, but he drank it to please Fan Xueyao. When he tasted the sweet and tangy, icy plum juice, he was surprised. "This isn't made from dried plums?"

Fan Xueyao took a sip, feeling the coolness seep into her bones. She exhaled a breath of heat and said with a smile, "This plum juice is indeed made from dried plums, but the method is different. It's an improvement I've made. How does it taste, Your Majesty? Do you like it?"

Chu Nan took another two sips and praised with a smile, "It tastes great. You call it plum juice? That's simple enough. I never liked the spleen-soothing drink before, but I could drink two cups of this. What's the recipe? I don't taste sand ginger, but there's osmanthus, right? The sweetness and fragrance are unique, much better than the old version."

"It's an honor that you like it, Your Majesty. I wasted two pots of the drink trying to perfect it. My servants complained about the sourness or too much licorice. The supply department wondered why I needed so much licorice and dried plums, thinking I might want to use them for bathing." Fan Xueyao chuckled self-deprecatingly.

Hearing this, Chu Nan nearly spat out the cool plum juice. The idea of using dried plums and licorice for bathing was truly imaginative!

Besides the plum juice, Huaping also brought fruits chilled in well water: melons, apples, cantaloupes, peaches, loquats, and lychees sent from Sichuan at breakneck speed.

Although the Capital was in the south, it was far from Guangdong and Yunnan. Lychees were hard to come by.

These lychees were kept chilled with ice and delivered to the Capital within three days via express courier. Even with ice, many would spoil during transit. Countless horses would be exhausted to ensure the lychees arrived fresh. By the time they reached the Capital, only a small basket remained after discarding the spoiled ones.

The emperor first distributed some to the Empress Dowager, princes, and princesses. Some favored ministers also received a few. The remaining few were given to the empress and concubines.

How many could each get? Just a taste, not enough to satisfy anyone. Fan Xueyao, favored by Chu Nan, was lucky to have ten lychees. The other senior and high-born concubines got one or two each. The rest wouldn't even see fresh lychees.

In the 21st century, peeling lychees was a hassle, but now, even as a concubine, one had to be favored to eat them. Thinking about it, she realized how fate played tricks. Since coming to this world, she hadn't eaten fresh lychees except once since entering the palace, only dried ones and candied lychees.

This realization made the lychees taste even sweeter and juicier. Truly, rarity makes things precious.

Fan Xueyao pondered this deeply.

The lychees named 'Guailu' were indeed delicious, large like chicken eggs, with small seeds and thick, crisp flesh. They were intensely sweet and juicy, with a fragrant aroma. The shell was mostly green with a red stripe, making them visually appealing.

Seeing her eat several lychees from the fruit plate, Chu Nan assumed she loved them. Considering her portion, he guessed most of the lychees were here. He instructed Li Huairen to select some good ones for her.

"Thank you for your kindness, Your Majesty." Fan Xueyao felt a bit embarrassed, pursing her lips. Was she being too greedy?

Pleased by her gratitude, Chu Nan calmly said, "Lychees are delicious but are heating foods. Eating too many can cause heatiness, so moderation is key."

"I understand, Your Majesty. Please try these lychees; they are sweet and fleshy." With delicate hands, she peeled a white, translucent lychee and offered it to Chu Nan.

Chu Nan shifted uncomfortably, feeling awkward. Seeing Fan Xueyao smiling expectantly, he opened his mouth and took the lychee, accidentally brushing her hand with his lips.

Fan Xueyao's face flushed, her cheeks glowing. She glanced at him shyly, her eyes sparkling with allure. Chu Nan was momentarily stunned, his throat suddenly dry again. He swallowed, trying to compose himself, when Huaping entered.

"Your Majesty, should we set the table for dinner?" Huaping asked respectfully.

Chu Nan nodded, glancing at Fan Xueyao, and they walked out of the study together.

They sat side by side on the couch, while Huaping and others brought in the tables. Normally, Fan Xueyao would serve Chu Nan standing beside him, but he let her sit and eat with him.

Chu Nan's imperial meal was lavish, with a table on the couch and three more on the floor. Soon, the kitchen staff brought in dishes, then retreated, leaving only Yuan Shangshi to serve.

Yuan Shangshi bowed, sampled all the dishes, and then stepped back.

Compared to Chu Nan's three tables and one table, Fan Xueyao's table looked sparse. Chu Nan scanned the dishes and selected a few light and refreshing ones to move to her table.

"Your Majesty, my palace kitchen prepared a few dishes. Though not as luxurious as the imperial cuisine, they have a rustic charm. Would you like to try them?" Fan Xueyao suggested, having instructed the kitchen staff earlier to prepare a few dishes for the emperor's visit.

Chu Nan agreed, seeing no harm in tasting a few dishes. Huaping fetched the dishes from the inner kitchen, placing them on a red lacquer tray on the couch.

The four dishes were the result of multiple attempts: asparagus with shrimp, steamed river fish, vegetable crisp pancakes, and aromatic vegetarian rolls. Though the ingredients were not rare, the presentation was beautiful and unlike typical dishes.

Chu Nan was intrigued by the aroma and appearance, his appetite piqued.

Fan Xueyao personally served him a piece of the vegetable crisp pancake. In the 21st century, such a dish might not even make it to a restaurant table, but Fan Xueyao confidently presented it to the emperor.

The pancake, golden and crispy, was cut into triangles and garnished with a pansy, elevating its appearance. Chu Nan found the plating style fresh and elegant, enhancing the appeal. He picked up a piece and took a bite, hearing a satisfying crunch. The outer layer was crispy, while the inside was soft and fluffy, with a rich egg aroma and the sweetness of vegetables, making it delicious and satisfying.

Chapter 28: Beware of Inverted V Purchases

Chu Nan's eyes lit up, and he chewed faster, quickly finishing the pancake. Seeing that he had just tasted it but was still unsatisfied, Fan Xueyao gave him another piece and then placed a fragrant vegetarian meat roll in front of him in a jade bowl.

Eating too much of one dish can make even the best food tiresome; switching dishes helps maintain the initial deliciousness and appetite.

The vegetarian meat roll was made from taro, shiitake mushrooms, black fungus, white radish, carrots, green peas, leeks, and almonds, wrapped in tofu skin to form a small cylindrical shape. After steaming, it was drizzled with a thick sauce, making it translucent and glossy. The texture was smooth yet chewy, with a savory-sweet taste.

Chu Nan ate more and more happily, and before he knew it, he had finished all four dishes prepared by the inner kitchen of Fan Xueyao's palace without touching the imperial cuisine served to him.

Fan Xueyao didn't particularly enjoy the food in the palace, so the two of them, sharing the meal, ended up eating until they were nearly full. Fan Xueyao had a habit of walking around the courtyard after meals to aid digestion. Chu Nan had never had this habit before; he often forgot to eat during his busy political affairs and had no time for such leisurely activities. However, now that he had been on the throne for three or four years, life had settled into a routine, and he had some spare time.

Fan Xueyao invited him to walk around the courtyard, and he followed her. Seeing the jasmine flowers blooming beautifully, he suddenly remembered the faint jasmine scent she always carried. Jokingly, he wondered if she was a reincarnation of a flower fairy. He picked a beautiful jasmine flower from a branch and personally pinned it in her hair, looking at her from different angles, and recited, "A light silk fan with white orchids, a slender waist adorned with jade, she seems like a fairy descending from heaven, her smile outshining the stars."

Fan Xueyao blushed slightly and playfully glared at him, waving her green gauze jasmine fan as she walked away. Her sheer clothes outlined her graceful silhouette, her curvaceous hips swaying gently like willows in the wind, exuding an enchanting allure that captivated Chu Nan's gaze. He quickly caught up to her.

After waiting for his stomach to settle, he eagerly led Fan Xueyao back to the hall, not even bothering to take a bath first. Chu Nan kissed and caressed her passionately, indulging in their intimate embrace for hours until they finally called for water, panting heavily.

Outside, the young maidservants, including Huaping, heard the commotion for the first time and blushed, lowering their heads to avoid being seen in their embarrassment. Despite feeling shy, they couldn't help but imagine what was happening inside.

During the month Fan Xueyao stayed in the palace, she had befriended some of the other concubines. After entering the palace, Fan Xueyao rarely left her quarters except to pay respects to the Empress every few days. She hadn't met any of her former friends yet.

The reason Fan Xueyao hadn't sought out her old friends from her time as a concubine was unknown, despite various speculations among the others. However, the reason they hadn't visited her was initially due to hesitation, unsure about the nature of the palace and wanting to observe more.

They feared that any misstep could lead to regret and difficulty in reversing the situation later.

Later, seeing Fan Xueyao gain favor, they worried that rushing to visit her might be seen as sycophantic and unseemly. It would be embarrassing and undignified.

However, as time passed and Fan Xueyao showed no sign of visiting them, they began to fear losing their friendship. Finally, someone gathered the courage to bring gifts and visit her.

Fan Xueyao, who was both busy and idle, was embroidering shoe faces when Chuntao informed her that Qin Baolin wished to see her. She recalled Qin Baolin immediately, recognizing her as Qin Zhuyuan, who shared the same courtyard with her. Qin Zhuyuan had been granted the title of Baolin.

She put away her embroidery tools and said calmly, "Lead her to the east parlor." She then headed to her bedroom. She usually wore minimal makeup and simple jewelry within the palace, preferring comfortable and cool clothing.

She was currently wearing a light green silk undergarment embroidered with bees and orchids, paired with a pale pink silk skirt, and a light autumn-colored gossamer robe over it.

This attire resembled the style of late Tang Dynasty ladies. During that period, replacing the skirt with a dress would be suitable for state banquets. However, in the conservative Daliang, it was considered indecent. While acceptable in private quarters, it would be inappropriate for guests unless one wanted to face public scorn.

The maids hurriedly helped her change into proper guest-receiving attire, applied makeup, and adorned her with appropriate jewelry before leading her to the east parlor.

Su'e served tea and snacks, and Qin Zhuyuan had just started drinking her tea when Fan Xueyao arrived.

Seeing Fan Xueyao enter surrounded by maidservants, Qin Zhuyuan stood up and bowed respectfully, offering greetings. Although they were once fellow concubines, their current positions differed significantly. Fan Xueyao held the fourth-rank position of Beauty, ranking among the twenty-seven secondary consorts, while Qin Zhuyuan was a sixth-rank Baolin, among the eighty-one imperial wives.

Fan Xueyao gestured for Huaping to help Qin Zhuyuan rise, maintaining a polite demeanor neither overly cold nor overly warm, which made Qin Zhuyuan feel both relieved and tense. Fan Xueyao had always been known for her gentle and elegant demeanor, and her attitude seemed unchanged. However, Qin Zhuyuan couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed, wishing Fan Xueyao would be warmer.

Fan Xueyao sat on the throne and noticed Qin Zhuyuan's sweaty forehead. She asked Huaping to call in the maidservants working outside to fan both of them and requested Su'e to bring more fruit and two bowls of chilled drinks.

Qin Zhuyuan observed Fan Xueyao closely and nodded, saying, "It has only been a few months since we last met, but you have become even more radiant, making me feel quite ashamed." She wasn't merely flattering; since entering the palace and gaining favor, Fan Xueyao's demeanor had subtly changed. Once delicate and clear, she now exuded a gentle charm, making her instantly likable.

Fan Xueyao, however, was not just gentle and charming; she could also be alluring and captivating, though she reserved that side for Chu Nan. For other women, showing gentleness and charm was enough to avoid drawing unnecessary envy.

"Qin Baolin is exaggerating. Just a couple of months can hardly change much. It's just that my attire is more elaborate now," Fan Xueyao smiled modestly.

Qin Zhuyuan thought her words pleased Fan Xueyao and continued flatteringly, "Clothing does depend on the person. The same attire looks different on different people. You are naturally beautiful, and even simple clothes look elegant on you."

As she was about to continue praising, Huaping brought in two maidservants with fruit and chilled drinks. Qin Zhuyuan paused briefly, waited for the items to be served, and then continued, "I was hesitant to disturb you, but since entering the palace, I've felt lonely without familiar faces. After much deliberation, I decided to visit you today, hoping to catch up and perhaps find a place to come and talk in the future."

Fan Xueyao knew Qin Zhuyuan's true intentions were not simply seeking companionship. If she needed someone to talk to, there were plenty of maidservants and other concubines in the palace.

However, it was customary to speak indirectly and politely. Even if there were conflicts, people maintained a cordial facade to appear dignified and noble.

So, while Qin Zhuyuan's words were partly sincere, everyone, including Huaping, understood the underlying motives.

Fan Xueyao smiled gently and said, "Qin Baolin knows that I prefer quietness and rarely interact frequently with others. Frequent visits are not necessary."

Hearing this, Qin Zhuyuan's heart sank, thinking her plans had fallen apart.

But then Fan Xueyao added with a smile, "However, if you occasionally want to discuss embroidery or painting, I am still welcoming."

Qin Zhuyuan was overjoyed, almost standing up in excitement, her eyes wide with happiness. She quickly composed herself, maintaining a dignified demeanor.

Fan Xueyao's condition of occasional visits didn't bother her. The frequency could be adjusted, and once she became close friends with Fan Xueyao, she could visit as often as she liked.

Being close to Fan Xueyao meant having a chance to meet the Emperor. She didn't expect to gain as much favor as Fan Xueyao, knowing she lacked exceptional talent or beauty. But she was young and didn't want to spend her life in solitude.

Since entering the palace three months ago, she had only been summoned once. Desperate, she turned to Fan Xueyao, her only friend from their time together.

Satisfied with Fan Xueyao's response, Qin Zhuyuan stayed a while longer before reluctantly leaving.

After she left, Fan Xueyao sighed, heading to her bedroom, looking slightly tired.

Su'e followed, muttering unhappily, "This Qin Baolin is too insensitive, dragging the Beauty to sit with her for so long. Can't she see how tired the Beauty is?"

"Perhaps she is truly lonely, and her words might be genuine. She must be quite bored these days," Fan Xueyao said, allowing Huaping to help her remove her layers of clothing and heavy jewelry, feeling a sense of relief.

Chapter 29: Caution with Purchases - Palace Maidens and Quarrels

"A beauty, don't let her deceive you. She's not really feeling cooped up; she's just pretending to mislead you. In my opinion, she's clearly trying to get closer to you, scheming to take advantage of her proximity."

Fan Xueyao smiled slightly, not responding.

Indeed, this palace is full of discerning eyes. Everyone here is well-informed and clear-minded. Qin Zhuyuan's little schemes can't fool anyone. The reason Fan Xueyao went along with it was simply because she had her own plans. Always staying secluded would eventually arouse jealousy and suspicion from others. By offering a bait, people would see the potential benefits and wouldn't focus solely on hating her or setting traps for her.

The most taboo for a concubine is to monopolize the emperor's favor. Her position is too low for such favor to be beneficial. Although she isn't the sole favorite yet, she couldn't push the emperor away to someone else either. If the emperor wants to visit another concubine, she can't control that. But if he comes to her, she won't push him away. Pushing away his favor would bring no benefit and might make him think she doesn't care about him. She wouldn't do something so thankless.

However, appearances must be maintained. At least, she needs to show the Empress and the Empress Dowager that she isn't trying to monopolize the emperor. Whether the emperor visits others or not isn't something she can control as a mere beauty. It's not her fault. You can't force a bull to drink water if it doesn't want to. Even the Empress can't dictate such matters, so she is innocent.

If Qin Zhuyuan were to seduce the emperor in her Spreading Fragrance Hall, as long as Fan Xueyao acts indifferent and unaware, the emperor would think Qin Zhuyuan is disrespectful and hypocritical, pretending to be friends while secretly seducing him. Even if he doesn't pity her, he won't blame her, since she appears to be the one wronged.

Huaping guessed Fan Xueyao's thoughts but found them hard to fathom. She cautiously suggested, "Beauty, should we refuse Qin Baolin entry? Allowing someone with ill intentions into the Spreading Fragrance Hall seems unwise. His Majesty sometimes visits here, and if she encounters him..."

"His Majesty isn't driven by lust. If he came here, how could he be led away by Qin Baolin? He isn't the type to act rashly in my Spreading Fragrance Hall." Fan Xueyao explained her reasoning to reassure Huaping that she wasn't being deceived by Qin Zhuyuan.

"Moreover, I will live in the palace until death. I can't avoid interacting with others forever; that would drive me mad. People will come to my hall, and I'll go to theirs. Constantly fearing they'll steal His Majesty away would hinder all interactions."

Huaping muttered, "But no one else has His Majesty's favor like you. He only visits our Spreading Fragrance Hall, never other concubines' palaces. If others visit us frequently, they might encounter His Majesty. But even if you visit them a hundred times, you won't meet him. They always seem to benefit more."

"How can you think like that?" Fan Xueyao didn't elaborate further, saying, "If His Majesty has no intention, even a hundred encounters won't matter. If he does, it would happen anywhere."

Huaping fell silent, realizing that if His Majesty wanted to favor another concubine, no one could stop him. If he didn't, their efforts would be futile. Success or failure depends on His Majesty's will. She privately hoped that if he did favor another concubine, it wouldn't be in the Spreading Fragrance Hall, which would embarrass and hurt their beauty.

Su'e dared not breathe loudly. After the conversation ended, she approached Fan Xueyao cautiously, asking, "Beauty, it's late. The kitchen needs to prepare lunch. What would you like for today's meal?"

Fan Xueyao realized Qin Zhuyuan had been in her hall for an hour. Perhaps having tea and fruit left her not very hungry, but she nodded, "Something light. A stir-fried vegetable without lard, use vegetable oil instead of sesame oil, and rapeseed oil. A dish of pickled cucumber. Let them decide the rest, except no hot noodles or rice. Cold rice soaked in well water instead."

Su'e noted everything down and went to inform the kitchen.

With some time before the meal, Fan Xueyao went to the study in the east wing. She had a bed placed near the window, where the light was good and the air was fresh. Lying there to read or sleep was quite comfortable.

The bed was covered with a jade mat, smooth and cool. The silk pillow stuffed with cotton had a reed cover, soft and cool to the touch.

Lying on the bed reading was delightful. If the sunlight was too bright, she could lower the bamboo curtain. Shadows danced on the floor and walls, creating a serene atmosphere.

After reading for a while, Huaping came in to announce the meal.

Fan Xueyao was resting when suddenly the outside became noisy. Woken up, she opened her eyes slightly, annoyed. Huaping entered quietly, looking strange.

Rubbing her forehead, Fan Xueyao sat up, asking, "What's going on outside?"

Huaping hurried over to serve her, cautiously saying, "It's nothing serious. Two maids quarreled, losing their tempers. I'll punish them later."

Fan Xueyao asked, "Who are they? Why did they fight?"

"It's Chuntau and Fengyun from the front hall. They've always disliked each other. Chuntau is clever and often reports to the back hall, which makes Fengyun jealous. Today, Qin Baolin visited, and Chuntau greeted her, making Fengyun angry. Chuntau, being young, couldn't hold back and argued back."

Fengyun's presence in the Spreading Fragrance Hall was minimal, but Fan Xueyao remembered her clearly. Most of her servants were loyal and rule-abiding, except for Hong Xiao, who had ulterior motives. Only Fengyun harbored secret intentions, hoping to observe Fan Xueyao's abilities. If she lacked them, Fengyun planned to ask her godmother to transfer her. If she had them, Fengyun would try to get close. However, Fan Xueyao's mind-reading ability revealed her true intentions, and soon she surrounded herself with useful people. Fengyun became an outsider, feeling resentful.

Chuntau often visited the back hall, charming everyone with her sweet words. Huaping and Zhu Zhu liked her, often giving her gifts. Seeing this, Fengyun naturally felt envious.

Considering these thoughts, Fan Xueyao lifted her chin slightly, her voice cool, "How dare these maids! Bring them in. I want to see what kind of people they are to behave so arrogantly in my Spreading Fragrance Hall."

Huaping hesitated, having served Fan Xueyao for three months, never seeing her like this. She composed herself and brought Fengyun and Chuntau in.

Chuntau, usually quick-witted, knelt and lowered her head, not daring to act cute as before.

Fengyun, unfamiliar with Fan Xueyao's true nature, thought her quiet and gentle. Though she regretted the quarrel, she wasn't as cautious as Chuntau, keeping her head slightly raised, revealing her dissatisfaction.

Fan Xueyao noticed this, her gaze turning colder.

Looking at both, she said, "Were you two causing the disturbance?"

Chuntau bowed deeply, "Yes, Beauty."

Fengyun also admitted.

"What was the reason? You've been in the palace long enough to know better. How could you lose your composure and disregard palace rules? Your supervisors must have taught you better. Behaving like common women, disturbing my rest, is unacceptable."

Chuntau buried her head deeper, ashamed and afraid, "I was arrogant and disrespectful. Please punish me, Beauty."

Fengyun, however, defended herself, "Please understand, Beauty. This wasn't intentional. I'm not reckless. Chuntau was unreasonable, taking all the favorable tasks. She neglects her duties, always visiting the back hall to curry favor. Today, Qin Baolin arrived, and she left me to handle the front hall, treating me like her subordinate. I couldn't tolerate this. Please judge fairly, Beauty. I admit I was impulsive, but there's a reason. If Chuntau doesn't change, this will happen again."

Fan Xueyao nodded, then looked at Chuntau, smiling slightly, "Chuntau, do you have anything to say about Fengyun's words?"

Chuntau didn't rush to defend herself, bowing before speaking clearly, "I admit my mistake. I shouldn't have argued with Fengyun. If she calls me servile, I'll accept it. But accusing me of seeking attention and pushing others aside is unjust."

Chapter 30: Beware of Purchasing V-chapter; Departure

Chuntao spoke clearly, questioning, "When Beauty Fan assigned both me and Feng Yun to serve in the front hall, I was sincere and diligent, fulfilling my duties without any slack. And what about you, Feng Yun? Wasn't it you who refused to handle matters? On the surface, it might seem like I came to the back hall more often, but wasn't it you who delegated tasks to me? Naturally, I assumed that you were lazy and uninterested in handling affairs. So, I took on the extra work. In the end, you blame me for taking your job. Do you not feel ashamed?"

Feng Yun stammered, unable to come up with a rebuttal. These events were no secret, and she couldn't deny them.

At the time, she had been observing Beauty Fan and was somewhat neglectful, delegating all tasks to Chuntao to avoid drawing attention from Beauty Fan. She feared that if she were reassigned, Beauty Fan might object.

But there were only two of them in the front hall. If she didn't do the work, who else would besides Chuntao? Besides, hadn't she later decided to stay and serve in the Spreading Fragrance Hall? Did her initial negligence mean she could be disregarded forever?

"Even if I was lazy at first, can't people change?" Feng Yun regained her confidence. Even if she had made mistakes before, she had since made up her mind. It was Chuntao who wouldn't let her take charge.

Chuntao sneered coldly, "If you truly changed, why didn't you tell me kindly? I would never have stood in your way. But instead, you remained silent and even scolded me without reason. Is this how you show change? Moreover, you lack experience. If you mess up a task, you'll face punishment, and it will affect Beauty Fan. Then, you won't have the courage to blame me."

Feng Yun grew angry. How could her experience be less than Chuntao's?

"Enough." Fan Xueyao's stern voice silenced them both. Feng Yun looked resentful, her chest heaving.

"I've never seen someone so unreasonable act so boldly. This is quite an eye-opener."

Feng Yun's face flushed red.

Fan Xueyao frowned slightly, her lips pressed into a straight line. "Both of you were assigned to the front hall by me. You can't blame others for being diligent when you don't do your work. If you want to change, you must show a genuine attitude of repentance. Whether or not I give you another chance is my decision. Now, you're not only refusing to change but also bullying those who are diligent. The Spreading Fragrance Hall cannot tolerate such behavior."

She turned to Huaping, whose face showed slight anger. "Huaping."

"Here, mistress."

"Take this palace maid to the Yeting Bureau and bring back a new one with good character."

Huaping couldn't help but smile, suppressing her joy. "Yes."

Feng Yun widened her eyes, shaking her head. "No, no, I know I was wrong. Please don't send me away!"

Fan Xueyao's gentle smile seemed to mock her. "Why didn't you admit your mistake earlier? Now it's too late!" Huaping said coldly.

"Wait," Fan Xueyao called out, stopping Huaping.

Feng Yun's fading hope flickered again. Had Beauty Fan changed her mind?

"Mistress, please command," Huaping bowed respectfully.

"Since she's being sent away for her mistakes, don't forget to take her to see Gong Zheng before going to the Yeting Bureau."

Huaping's face lit up, and she immediately complied.

Feng Yun stared at Fan Xueyao's serene smile, feeling icy cold. How could she have thought Fan Xueyao was mild-mannered? A woman favored by the emperor couldn't be underestimated.

Huaping quickly covered Feng Yun's mouth as she tried to plead, dragging her out of the hall and to Gong Zheng. After explaining the situation, they went to the Yeting Bureau to arrange for a replacement.

Huaping still felt indignant. Many in the palace envied their position in the Spreading Fragrance Hall, yet Feng Yun had ruined it with her insolence. She would face severe consequences now.

After Huaping left, Fan Xueyao asked Chuntao if she knew her mistake.

Chuntao's heart sank. Her earlier satisfaction vanished. She took a deep breath, banishing all inappropriate emotions.

"I know I was wrong," she said sincerely.

Fan Xueyao smiled warmly but spoke calmly. "Where did you go wrong?"

"I shouldn't have become arrogant because of the trust placed in me by Beauty Fan and the sisters. I shouldn't have looked down on Feng Yun," Chuntao said, deeply ashamed. She realized that today's incident was partly her fault.

Without Fan Xueyao's guidance, she might have become even more arrogant. She felt ashamed for exposing her foolishness.

Fan Xueyao's smile deepened. "It's good that you understand."

Chuntao continued, "Today's incident could have been avoided. I was unbalanced because I felt more valued than Feng Yun. I argued over trivial matters, causing the situation to escalate."

Fan Xueyao nodded, her tone gentle. "You should understand that in this palace, arrogance and pride are the worst traits. I don't want to have to pay for your funeral someday."

Chuntao shivered, realizing her mistake. She said sincerely, "I understand."

Fan Xueyao smiled, helping Chuntao up. "You've worked hard. Why didn't you tell Huaping about Feng Yun's behavior? In the future, speak up if something is wrong. Report issues if necessary. Don't worry about unnecessary things."

Chuntao hesitated, feeling unworthy of the reward. "I don't deserve this."

Fan Xueyao insisted, "Take it. You've handled the front hall diligently despite your mistakes. I reward and punish fairly. This is for your efforts. If you make mistakes again, I won't hesitate to punish you."

Chuntao knelt, accepting the reward gratefully. "Thank you, mistress."

The Yeting Bureau soon sent a new palace maid named Xiaoyue. Though plain-looking, she was far more reliable than Feng Yun. Palace maids were chosen for their skills, not their appearance.
