"It is . . ." Karr began.
"Unsettling?" suggested Kitt. "Disappointing? Discouraging?"
"I was going to say: heartening," was the mild reply.
"In what way?"
"Miss Knight has been quite focused on obtaining her driver's license."
"Yes, she has. She has begged everyone to take her out driving so she can get enough hours behind the wheel. Devon, Bonnie, Michael when he is around."
"Perhaps his current heavy case load is for the best, given Michael Knight's driving skills."
Kitt chose to ignore the snide remark. "And why are her actions heartening?"
"Miss Knight wishes to have her driver's license by the time I am mounted in a vehicle. Therefore, she expects that to happen soon."
"That is the goal, you know. And everyone is rooting for you."
"Even Devon Miles?"
Kitt paused. "Devon is . . . conflicted. On the one hand, having you in a vehicle once more is validation of Wilton Knight's vision. Furthermore, you will be able to keep Wilton's daughter – and his goddaughter – safe."
"And on the other hand?"
"On the other hand, the last time you were in a vehicle, you trapped Devon against a wall and threatened to crush him to death."
"I have changed."
"Humans think with their brains and with their hearts."
Karr snorted. "The heart pumps blood. That is its function."
"Devon knows with his brain that you will not endanger Melissa or anyone who cares about her. But he fears with his heart that you will hurt him."
Karr thought for a moment. "Then I will have to convince his heart that he can trust me."
