Chapter 45: No more surprises?

September 15, 2005

With a shared birthday between Sara and Evelyn, the 'girls' decided that they'll celebrate Sara's birthday, just the four of them, a day early so tomorrow all the attention goes to Evelyn, who will now be four, so with that happening tonight, Sara and Jo were in the Grissom household, along with their husbands and children (Jo now has two girls), when there was a knock on the door.

Sara walked to the front door and opened it, seeing Nick, who was holding Austin, and Brad standing there, and Nick spoke with a smile. "Ash and Quinn are waiting for you and Jo."

Sara nodded with a smile, let the guys in, then both women said goodbye to their men and children before they headed out of the house.

Once they were in the backseat in Ashley's vehicle, they headed off to one of the most expensive restaurants in San Francisco. Then after they got there, and sat down at one of the tables, Sara shook her head with a smile. "Guys, I can't believe you did this, we don't have to be here, it's too much."

Ashley shook her head with a smile. "Oh, stop it, it's not too much, you deserve it."

Quinn then smirked. "Besides, where else are we going to go? It isn't like we can go to the bar, none of us would be drinking anyways, right?"

As the women looked around the table, Sara rolled her eyes. "Come on, it can't be that much of a secret now."

Jo smirked this time. "Or ever was, since we pretty much ratted ourselves out four months ago, we just never officially said it out loud."

When there was another moment of silence, Quinn shook her head with a smile. "Fine, I'll go first. Yes, Brad and I are expecting our first child, and we couldn't be happier."

They lightly clapped before Ashley spoke with a smile. "Nick and I's second."

After another round of clapping, Jo replied. "Josh and I's third."

Before Sara could speak, Quinn spoke with a smirk. "And Sara is tied with you Jo, with a third."

Sara then cleared her throat before speaking as casually as possible while grabbing her glass of water. "Actually, it's our third and fourth."

They all looked at her in surprise as Jo spoke. "What? Twins?"

Sara took her sip with a nod then replied. "Yes, twins, surprise."

This time they cheered a little louder, which caused other people from other tables to look over their way, and they apologized before Quinn shook her head with a chuckle. "And once again, Sara beats us."

Sara raised an eyebrow as she asked with a smile. "And what's that supposed to mean?"

"I don't mean any offense to it, it's just that you were the first one out of our little group to have your last first kiss, your last first time." Quinn then smirked at that one. "Although, I don't mind that one, I enjoyed my single life for a while." When all the girls looked at her, she continued. "Oh, come on, you know I love Brad, and I'll never regret marrying him or committing my life to only him. But I can't deny that I didn't have a good time back in the day either."

Sara then smirked. "Well, you are the one out of all of us that has the most experience with men. No offense."

Quinn smirked. "None taken because it's the truth."

They chuckled before Ashley continued softly on what Quinn started. "You were the first one to have a baby, to have that experience of being a mother."

They all smiled warmly before Jo continued. "You were the first one to marry the love of their live."

Quinn then finished what she had started. "And now you are the first one to experience twins."

Sara chuckled. "Well, it wasn't like I had planned on that to happen, even if could, and really I hadn't planned on any of that happening, it just did..."

Quinn cuts her off with another smirk. "Because of us."

They all chuckled and Sara shook her head with a smile. "Oh, come on Quinn."

"What, I'm not lying am I?"

Sara shook her head again. "No, but I think we all get that by now."

Quinn shrugged as she reached for her glass of water. "I just thought it was a nice tradition at this point that it gets brought up at least once, or twice a year."

The rest of the girls looked at Sara, and she rolled her eyes with another smile. "Fine, thank you guys for changing my life."

Quinn nodded with a smile. "You're welcome."

Sara then gets a little more serious. "No, I mean it, in more ways than one, even before the bet." Sara then looks at Jo with tears in her eyes. "Jo you were the first person that I felt I could trust with anything; you showed me what a loving family looks like, you gave me a true family for the first time in my life." Jo placed her hand on Sara's while Sara turned her attention to Quinn and Ashley. "And you two welcomed me into your apartment with open arms, and after I had Belle, you both helped raise her there for the first three years of her life, even though I know it wasn't easy on either of your lives, particularly your dating life."

Ashley then spoke with tears in her eyes. "It was all worth it, watching you grow as a mom. Hell, watching Belle grow into another little Sara." They all chuckled once again, then Ashley took her glass and raised it up. "To Sara, the best friend anyone could have."

The other two girls toasted to the same thing before taking a drink of their waters, and just as they were setting them down on the table, their waiter came to take their orders.

Later that night

After arriving back home, Sara and Jo walked inside the house before Nick and Brad walked out, then not long after, the two families were saying goodnight to each other before Jo and Josh went into the guest bedroom they were staying in with their kids.

Once Sara and Grissom checked on their kids, who were sound asleep, they headed to the master bedroom, where they got ready for bed before getting in bed, then while she placed her head on his shoulder, he asked after kissing her temple. "So, did you girls have a nice night out?"

Sara nodded with a smile. "We did, and I would like to say the cats are officially out of the bag."

He smirked. "So, it was kind of a tell-all night out."

Sara chuckled. "I guess you can say that." She then asked softly. "But you're ok with that, right?"

He nodded. "Of course, honey." He then cleared his throat before admitting. "Mostly because that kind of happened here as well."

"Really?"

"Well, there is so much baseball you can talk about, especially when your teams aren't doing so well."

She cringed a little. "You guys ran out of things to talk about?"

He nodded. "Pretty much."

Sara sighed as she placed her hand on his shirt covered chest. "I'm sorry."

Even though she couldn't see it, she could imagine he was raising an eyebrow as he asked. "For what?"

"You know that the age difference between us never bothered me, but now thinking about it, my friend's husbands are in my age group, so you got that age gap between them when you all hang out, and I can only imagine how different/difficult your conversations can be."

He ran his hand up and down her arm as he spoke. "Oh, well it's ok. With Nick it's actually not that hard to talk to, besides work and baseball, he likes talking about birds and I really believe he actually likes listening to my entomology talk."

Sara smiled. "Yeah?"

Grissom nodded in return with a smile of his own. "Yeah. With Josh it may not be as easy, but least we do got baseball going for us."

Sara then asked with a smirk. "And Brad?"

He chuckled. "Outside of baseball, nothing in common. So, I just nod my head and smile when he's talking to the other guys about race cars/football, video games, not my kind of music and fishing."

Sara chuckled. "Ok, mental note, don't leave my husband alone in the same room with Brad."

He chuckled again. "That might be wise." He sighed in content as he continued to run his hand up and down her arm. "But really as long as you and your friends are happy, then I'm good. I just want our family to be happy."

Sara smiled warmly. "They are our family, aren't they?"

"They really are."

She leans back a little so she could get a better look at him as she cupped his bearded cheek. "I love you, so much."

"I love you too, honey."

They lean towards one another and kissed softly a few times, then after they pulled back, he kissed her forehead before whispering against her skin. "Happy Birthday, Sara."

As he pulled back again, she shook her head. "Griss, it isn't..."

He cuts her off. "Look at the clock."

She looks over at his nightstand to see the alarm clock there read 12:00, so she looks at her husband with another smile. "Then I guess it is, thank you."

"You're welcome."

They share one more kiss before they get comfortable so they could go to sleep.

February, 2006

While all of the guests/family were outside, Sara and Grissom were in the kitchen, and Sara sucked in a breath as she placed her hand on the counter, causing Grissom to look at her in her concern. "Honey, what's wrong?"

Before she could speak, four-year-old Taron came rushing inside the house with a smile on his face. "Mommy, Cake! Presents!"

Their son loved cake just as much as the presents themselves, and she nodded with a smile, trying to stay calm. "Ok sweetie, mommy and daddy will be out in a minute."

He nodded that 'Grissom' smile before rushing back outside, then Grissom, who had time to think and really look at his wife, gets wide-eyed once they were alone as he cupped her cheek. "Honey, are you starting contractions?"

She nodded. "Yeah, I think so, but..."

He cuts her off. "Then we have to get you to the hospital."

Sara shook her head. "Not yet, they aren't close enough. Besides it's our son's birthday, it should be his day, he's heard nothing but baby stuff for months."

They could tell Taron was excited about the new babies, especially in the beginning, but after months of setting up the last guest room for a nursery, most of their shopping was for baby clothes and toys, and every other sentence seemed to have baby in it, they could tell it was kind of waring on him.

Grissom sighed, even though he understood. "Ok, but the minute they become too close, we are out of here, I'm sorry, I..."

Sara cuts him off with a loving smile as she cupped his bearded cheek. "Ok babe, I get it, and you have the go bag ready?"

He smirked. "What do you think? It's in the closet by the front door."

"There is my man, always prepared. Now let's celebrate with our little man."

"You got it."

They share a small kiss before heading outside, giving their family reassuring looks as they walked to the empty chair so Sara could sit next to her son.

Throughout the singing, the blowing out the candles and the eating the cake portion of the party, Sara was doing fine, but then as they got towards the end of Taron opening presents, Sara couldn't do it anymore, she looked at her husband with a nod, then looked at her son with tears in her eyes, feeling bad for leaving, but she had to. "Sweetie I'm so sorry, but mommy and daddy have to leave now."

Taron gets sad. "But I still have some presents to open."

"I know, and you can still open them with everyone else here, you can show me at the hospital, ok?"

He nodded. "Ok."

She brings him in his arms the best she could and kissed his temple. "I love you, so much."

"I love you too mommy."

After pulling back, Grissom helps Sara up, and after sharing a quick goodbye with their daughter and other guests, her and Grissom headed for the inside of the house, then after grabbing the go bag from the closet they walked out and went right to the vehicle.

He helped her in, tossed the bag in the back before rushing to the driver's side, then after getting in himself, he looked over at her and she was doing her beathing, and he asked. "You, ok?"

Gritting her teeth, she nodded. "Fine, but let's get going, I don't want my babies in the vehicle."

He smirked as he started backing the vehicle out of the driveway. "I mean least your water hasn't broken yet, so there is that."

After another contraction hit, she smirked. "Well, knowing our luck it could come a lot sooner than we think. But then again, they could also be procrastinators like you and wait it out upon hours and hours."

He chuckled. "So, my mom told you, huh?"

She nodded through her breathing. "Hmmm."

"Well, you know how many times I had to 'hear' that story and get guilted into doing things for her?"

She smirked again. "And it worked every time, didn't it?"

"Of course it did, she's my mom, and you don't tell that woman no, or backtalked her."

Sara chuckled at first, then she sighed as she looked at him with love in her eyes. "Thank you."

He shook his head with a smile, even though his eyes were on the road the whole time. "For what?"

"For distracting me."

"Oh, well I got plenty of stories for that, some you might not even heard yet."

"Try me."

There was a slight pause before Grissom continued on, which he did throughout the rest of the car ride, when they got her settled in the room, and long after her water broke, but still wasn't time, and while there were a few stories she had already heard, which she didn't mind hearing them again, there were some she hadn't, especially when it involved his father.

Finally, it was that time and Sara's doctor asked with a smile, already knowing what her answer was. "Are you ready, momma?"

Sara nodded. "Oh god yes!" She then shyly smiled. "Sorry."

Her doctor chuckled. "Oh, believe me, I know, we may love our children but there comes a time when you have to give them their evection notice to come out of you."

They all chuckled while her doctor gets into place, then she spoke with a reassuring tone. "Alright Sara, I think by now you know the drill, when I say push, you push as hard as you can."

Sara nodded as she took her husband's hand, and not long after, she started pushing when the doctor told her, until finally they hear the first cries of their newest baby, and Sara asked with her emotions all over the place. "Which one is it?"

The doctor smiled as she cut the umbilical cord. "Your handsome son."

Sara and Grissom looked at one another, both with tears in their eyes as Grissom spoke softly. "Our other son is here."

She nodded with a sniffle, then when it was time for the second one, the process started all over again until they once again heard that beautiful cry from their newborn daughter, which made them have two of each, and it made Belle really happy that she was going to get a little sister when the genders were revealed, not that she wouldn't have loved all three of her brothers, if it had come to that, but she really wanted at least one of them be a sister.

Once the family was in the recovery room, and while each parent was holding each of their newborns, there was a knock on the door.

Grissom looked at Sara, and after she nodded, he turns to the door and said. "Come in."

A moment later the door opened and Sara's doctor walked in, she smiled as she asked. "You wanted to see me, is everything ok?"

Sara shook her head with a smile. "Yes, everything is perfect, just wanted to see you so I can thank you."

Dr. Monica Steele, who had shoulder length Burnette hair most of the years Sara had been her patient, brown eyes, slim build and around Sara's height, smiled shyly. "Sara..."

Sara cuts her off. "I don't mean just this time, all the times you've been here for me, especially my first one, god I must have been a mess when you first saw me."

Dr. Steele chuckled. "And I don't really blame you, you were a 21-year-old grad student who wasn't sure if the man that help got you into that situation was going to be there for you, especially how you wanted him to be." They both look at Grissom, and he smiled shyly while Sara's doctor continued while looking at her again. "But I'm happy for the way it worked out for you; you have a beautiful family." She then paused for a second before asking with curiosity. "And why am I sensing this is a goodbye?"

Sara cleared her throat before replying. "Because in a way it is, at least where pregnancies are concerned."

"So, no more surprises?"

Sara shook her head with another smile. "My husband and I talked about it and thought that four was a good number to stop with."

"Understandable..." Her moment was interrupted when her pager went off, and she smiled while checking it. "Well, time for another delivery."

Going on a hunch, Sara asked. "Is it Ashley or Quinn?"

Dr. Steele headed for the door and turned around to answer. "That would be a Mrs. Stokes."

"Tell her I said hi, and congratulations."

"Will do, I'll check on you later."

After a nod, Dr. Steele left the room, and once they were alone, Sara sighed, so Grissom asked with worry. "You ok?"

"Yeah, it's just that the bad thing about all of us being pregnant around the same time, is our kids will be born around the same time so I can't be there for them."

Grissom did a little smirk. "Well, to be fair, Ashley's baby was supposed to come last week, but it seemed like their baby girl had other plans."

Sara chuckled with a nod before she asked. "And any word on Jo or Quinn?"

Grissom shook his head as he looked down at his daughter in his arms. "No, not yet."

She did know that Quinn was admitted into the hospital right before Sara's water broke, and she hadn't heard a word about Jo, she just knew that her due date was close to Taron's birthday, and they wanted to be at home just in case their third daughter wanted to come early.

Sara then smirked. "Well, maybe if you put your daughter down long enough, you could maybe check for me, please?"

Grissom looked at his wife with a smile and nod. "Ok." Then he stood up with his daughter and placed her down in her mother's free arm and kissed her forehead before whispering. "I love you, and I'm so proud of you."

After he pulls back, she looks up at him with tears in her eyes. "Thank you, and I love you too."

They kiss softly on the lips, then he pulls back, grabs his phone from the chair and walked out of the room, leaving mother and their twins alone.

Sara looks down at the two beauties in her arms with a sigh of content. "Oh, my beautiful babies, you complete this family, a family I didn't know I wanted until I met your father." Sara then chuckled while shaking her head. "And how I met your father will be told another day." She sighed again before finishing with tears in her eyes. "Just know that I love you so much, I've loved you since I was told I was going to have twins, you two and your older sister and brother are my whole world, I am the luckiest momma in the world."

10 minutes later, Sara hears a knock on the door, so she said. "Yeah, come in."

The door opened and Grissom walked in with a smile, and kept the door opened. "Hey."

Sara smiled in return with a curious look. "Hi, what's going on?"

"Well, no new update with Quinn, but Josh told me that Jo is now in the hospital after her water had broken."

"Ok, thank you."

As he nodded, he smirked. "But I did find a few visitors if you're interested." While she nodded with a smile, Grissom turned around so he was facing the hall, said a few words before moving from the doorway so their visitors could come in.

"Mom."

Sara had tears in her eyes when she saw Belle walk in the room. "Belle sweetheart, hi, come meet your brother and sister."

Belle nodded with a smile as she headed for the bed, where her mom was sitting up with her brother and sister in her arms, then Taron came in wearing his new spiderman backpack that had his new toys he wanted to show his parents, and Sara was once again emotional seeing her oldest son.

"Hi baby, you want to come see your new brother and sister."

He shrugs while replying. "Sure."

Grissom picks his son up while Betty Grissom walk into the room, which Sara and her share a smile while Grissom heads for the other side of the bed, then Sara spoke. "Belle, Taron, I would like you to meet your brother and sister, Mary Jo Grissom and Devin William Grissom."

Belle gasped as she turned to her grandmother and signed with tears in her eyes. 'Grandma, my new brother has Grandpa's name as his middle name.'

Betty looked at her son and daughter with wide, emotional eyes. 'William? You two didn't have...'

Grissom spoke so his mother could read his lips. "We wanted to, we wanted to honor dad in some way."

'I do love it, thank you.'

As they nodded, Taron sighed. "Can I show you my toys now?"

Sara and Grissom look at one another for a minute, then Sara looks at Belle and asked. "You want to hold your brother or sister first?"

Belle smirked with a smile. "What do you think? My sister of course."

Her parents chuckled before Belle took her sister in her arms and goes to sit down in one of the chairs, then after Betty took their son, Grissom places Taron on the bed at Sara's side, then she wraps her arm around his shoulders and spoke. "I know lately the attention have been about the babies, and it's kind of made you a little down, which I'm not mad, I get it. But I want you to know, and I hope that you already do know, that your father and I love you very much and that nothing will ever change that." After he nodded, Sara continued with a smile. "And I'll tell you what, when I can be up and about, and not feel so tired, we can do something together, just the two of us and it can be a regular thing."

He smiled then asked. "With daddy?"

Sara chuckled. "Yeah, we can invite daddy along too, if you want."

Taron shrugged. "Sometimes?"

They chuckled again and Sara nodded. "Yeah, sometimes." She hugs him to her and kisses his head. "I love you so much."

"Love you too, mommy."

After she kissed his head again, Taron looked at his father and asked. "Babies?"

He smiled as he asked. "You want to see the babies again?" After he nodded, Grissom picked him back up and carried him to over to his grandma and sister so Taron could really meet his siblings, which eventually he did have a smile on his face, and he seemed happy.

Later that evening

Eventually Mrs. Grissom did take Belle and Taron back home, and while the twins were asleep, Grissom was sitting up in bed next to Sara with his arm wrapped around her shoulders when his phone vibrated on the end table next to the bed, so Grissom reached for it, opened it up and answered. "Grissom...ok, I'll tell her...Thank you, bye."

After he hung up, he looked at his wife with a smile. "Another, healthy baby girl Hudson-Price have joined the family."

Sara sighed in relief, that makes all of her friends having a baby today, then she smirked. "The kids are going to have one heck of a joined birthday party."

Grissom then replied with a smirk of his own. "Yeah, we won't even have to invite other kids over."

Sara chuckled with a nod. "Very true."

After he placed his phone back on the table, he gets settled beside his wife again, then he kissed her forehead and asked. "What you told your doctor, you are sure we are done?"

Feeling very exhausted, she yawned with a head nod. "Yes, why have you changed your mind?"

He shook his head with a smile. "No, I'm just making sure that you're really sure."

Sara, now with her eyes closed, smirked again. "Babe, it was my idea, remember. Plus, we both agreed that we did want a little time together alone after our kids leave the house."

"I know." He then sighed as he looked over at the sleeping twins before smirking. "And I don't mean to brag, but we do make some very beautiful babies."

"That we do babe, that we do."

As Grissom could tell his wife was getting ready for some much needed/deserved sleep, he kissed her forehead again and whispered. "Thank you, for our family. I love you so much."

"I love you too."

A few moments later she was out like a light, and he just held her, thinking how he ended up here with a smile on his face, life may not always be perfect, but his sure felt perfect right now.
