Episode 5x02: Sgt. Hudson's Lonely Glee Club Band

Synopsis:Kurt and Santana try to help Rachel boost her spirits after discovering she was offered the role of Fanny Brice's understudy in Funny Girl. Back in Lima, Sue Sylvester makes her triumphant return to McKinley and immediately targets the glee club. Ryder struggles to forgive Unique for catfishing him, and Kitty struggles to choose between the glee club and her relationship with Artie, or her spot on the Cheerios and the McKinley High food chain.

McKinley High was a melting pot of mixed emotions when the student body saw Cheerios coach Sue Sylvester make her triumphant return to the school.

Sue had taken the fall for Becky Jackson's role in the recent school shooting, in which Becky accidentally fired off two rounds of her father's gun, in fear of her impending graduation. Sue protected Becky by lying and saying it was her gun, and thus, was fired. However, because Becky was fed up with the way Coach Roz Washington treated her, she confessed the truth, which led to a month-long suspension for Becky, and Sue's reinstatement.

Sue marched into the office of Principal Figgins, where he, Will Schuester, and Finn Hudson sat, discussing the assembly at the end of the week. Mr. Schue and Finn were shocked to see her; Sue was equally shocked to see Finn.

"You would think in my absence, Figgins, that Fat Albert would return to his gravy boat and stay out of grown folks' business." Sue sneered, pointing at Finn. "Yet, the village idiot remains."

As Finn sighed, Mr. Schue turned back to his employers. "Figgins, I thought-"

"I was fired?" Sue asked innocently, walking over to Figgins' desk, and leaning up against it.

Figgins put it gently to the co-directors of the New Directions. "Innocent, wide-eyed Becky Jackson was the one who fired the gun in the school shooting, in fear of her impending graduation. Sue Sylvester took the fall for her, and now that Becky has told the truth, Sue is able to return."

Suddenly, it clicked in Schue's head; when she was leaving, Sue asked him to "keep an eye on Becky." It seemed strange to him at the time, but it all made sense now. McKinley, and for that matter, Sue, was Becky's safe place. When she graduates in May, she will have to leave the 'nest' and go out into the world, alone. He remembered how he felt when his high school graduation rapidly approached, and he even remembered how some of the members of glee club felt just last year. As much as he didn't want to believe Figgins or Sue, it made sense. Plus, while Sue was a pathological liar with a vendetta against the glee club, Becky Jackson was her soft spot – she wouldn't lie about something like this. Everything added up. He turned his attention to Finn, giving him a nod of confirmation.

"Let's get down to brass tax, shall we?" Sue shoved most of Figgins' belongings off his desk as she sat on it, in between Finn and Mr. Schue. "Last year, I put aside my vendetta against the gayest thing imaginable, show choir, and helped the two of you win a Nationals title. Well, as you know, the time of peace ended when Finn Hudson became a faculty member."

"I don't get it." Finn asked, looking to Mr. Schue. "I volunteer here. What exactly is her point?"

"My point, Jabba the Hutt, is that you are just as qualified to teach the glee club as my daughter Robin!" Sue exclaimed, before adding, "Care to add any slurs in my infant daughter's direction, Peter Griffin?"

Instantly remembering a moment of regret, Finn did not say a word, but Mr. Schue spoke up. "I'm sorry, but why does this conversation need to be had at all, let alone in Figgins' office?"

Figgins handed Mr. Schue a folder, which he and Finn proceeded to look through. "These are some of the houses my wife and I are looking to move into at the end of the school year. As much as I have enjoyed my time as principal here at McKinley, I will be retiring at the end of the year."

Schuester was shocked, laughing happily. "Wow, Figgins, that's great!"

Figgins nodded. "The schoolboard is looking to hire Sue Sylvester as my replacement."

Cue Finn and Mr. Schue, in shocked unison. "What?"

Sue snatched the folder from Schuester and handed it back to Figgins. "Come May, Figgy here won't be able to protect you anymore." She hopped off the desk and whispered, "So prepare yourselves for defeat." She winked and made her way to the door.

Mr. Schue looked to Figgins as he began to plead, "Figgins, when you leave, the glee club is certainly following you out the door. You know how Sue feels about me, and about that club. Please... the arts need you!"

"You know how cheerleading legend Sue Sylvester feels about winning, William. If you, and glee club apprentice Finn Hudson, can take home a Nationals victory at the end of the school year, you will have nothing to worry about."

Finn stood up. "Principal Figgins is right. We DON'T have anything to worry about because we're a shoo-in for Nationals. You said it yourself, Mr. Schue, we're on the road to becoming a dynasty!" He turned back to Figgins, "And we'll prove it to you. As we were discussing prior to Sue's interruption, the New Directions would be more than happy to perform at the assembly later this week."

Sue stopped dead in her tracks, as she turned around to face her arch-rivals. "The New Directions have ruled this school for far too long. The Cheerios are going to return to their rightful spot on the food chain; at the TOP." She marched back over to the two, getting in Finn's face. "I warned you, Grimace, what came of being my enemy. Nobody will be able to protect you – I'm out for blood now, Finn Hudson."

Sue began to leave again before turning around, "Do you smell that? No, I'm not referring to the stench of Will Schuester's hair products." She sniffed. "It's the smell of a Cheerios resurgence. It's the smell of the New Directions losing said direction. It's the smell of a Sue Sylvester revolution."

{The scene cuts to Finn, Mr. Schue and the glee club, eagerly watching Tina as she sings a solo for the Beatles assignment}

You say you want a revolution

Well, you know

We'd all love to change the world

You tell me that it's evolution

Well, you know

We'd all love to change the world

{Tina sits in between Blaine and Sam and puts her arms around them}

But when you talk about destruction

Don't you know that you can count me out

{Tina gets up and dances around Marley and Jake}

Don't you know it's gonna be alright?

Don't you know it's gonna be alright?

Don't you know it's gonna be alright?

{Tina stops and points at Finn}

You say you got a real solution

Well, you know

We'd all love to see the plan

{Tina walks to the piano and sits on it}

You ask me for a contribution

Well, you know

We're all doing what we can

{The entire glee club starts clapping to the beat}

Don't you know it's gonna be alright?

Don't you know it's gonna be alright?

Don't you know it's gonna be alright?

The glee club gave Tina a standing ovation as she finished her solo, clapping and cheering loudly for one of the original members of the club. Mr. Schue stood up and gave Tina a quick side hug before she sat and joined her teammates. "Tina, that was excellent! Just the kind of energy I was hoping you guys would bring this week. Well done!"

Tina gave a nonchalant shrug. "It's just the vibe I've been giving, and intend to continue to give, this year. It's Tina's time!"

Mr. Schue continued enthusiastically, "Well, I hope everyone can continue to bring their A-game this week like Tina did. We just spoke to Principal Figgins, and we'll be performing at the school assembly at the end of the week!"

The club broke out into whispers of what songs they wanted to sing, and of course, the New Directions' bad experience at assemblies. "Last time we had an assembly, Brittany had to lip sync the words to Gimmie More!" Sam cried. "Our assembly reputation is down the toilet!"

"Not to mention her and Santana barfing everywhere during our 'don't drink' PSA..." Artie muttered to himself softly.

"Guys, this assembly is a huge moment for us. Coming off our Regionals victory, this is a friendly reminder to the school and our competition that we are a show choir powerhouse." Finn, the voice of reason, stood up and joined Mr. Schue at the front, silencing the doubt in the room. "I know we have a spotty track record with performances at assemblies, but trust me, this is a chance to continue to prep ourselves to repeat at our title. And why not perform with the support of our home crowd?"

The club slowly began to come to their senses, growing more excited at the prospect of performing in front of their peers yet again.

"Can I do the White Chocolate dance during the performance?" Sam asked innocently. Finn gave him a quick thumbs up, to which Sam pumped his fist triumphantly, whispering to himself, "Finn is awesome!"

Tina raised her hand. "I assume I'll get to perform my solo of Revolution at this assembly, correct?"

Saved by the bell; as the bell rang for classes to transition, the glee club began to disperse, and Tina was left without an answer. "Seriously?"

Santana sat in the living room of her Bushwick apartment, Kurt by her side, as the two watched a video on her phone.

As the video played, Santana appeared on the screen. "Let's face it. There are good kinds of yeast, and bad kinds of yeast." Santana spoke to the camera, kneading dough in a kitchen. "But bad yeast goes scat with Yeast-i-Stat!" She said cheerfully, holding up a box of the product.

"Burns and itch are a thing of the past, and Yeast-i-Stat's 7 Easy Step Application makes feeling fresh a breeze!" Santana's voiceover continued as she ran through a field, blowing bubbles happily.

"I like yeast in my bagel... but not in my muffin!"

The commercial ended with Santana continuing to enjoy the outdoors and eating a bagel with friends, as the jingle played in the background.

Did you hear the news?

Let's have a chat

Bad yeast goes scat

With Yeast-i-Stat!

"I'm free!"

"Santana, that's amazing!" Kurt applauded as Santana put her phone down to embrace her friend. "How did you end up in this commercial?"

"Right place, right time, I guess!" Santana shrugged, hugging Kurt. "You know how I feel about fame. This'll certainly get my foot in the door."

"Did you mention this to Rachel yet?"

Santana rapidly shook her head. "After the Funny Girl news? I'm a cold-hearted bitch, Lady Hummel, but I know when to poke the bear and when to let her hibernate. Now isn't the time."

Funny Girl was a touché subject at the moment. Rachel had gotten a call from the musical's director, Rupert Campion, the day before, where she received news she didn't really want to hear. The good news? She landed a part in Funny Girl.

The bad news? She was the understudy for Fanny Brice.

"I love the girl, but did she really expect to get Fanny as a freshman in college with no experience in the business?" Santana continued, getting up to change in her room, but still talking to Kurt as she went. "Let's just be realistic here."

"Santana!" Kurt scolded, swatting at her curtain in the doorway.

"Am I wrong?"

Kurt sighed. "No, you're not, and honestly, I feel this is for the best. For an amateur, getting the understudy of such a big role like Fanny Brice is a big deal! This will humble her a bit and, like you with the commercial, get her foot in the Broadway door." He began to clean his dishes from breakfast as Santana re-entered the living room, her work clothes equipped. "I just feel not getting Fanny has shaken her confidence a bit."

"A bit?" Rachel stepped out of her bedroom, still in her pajamas. "I feel like an absolute failure. I've worked my entire life for Fanny, and getting the understudy? Unacceptable for my standards."

Santana and Kurt stood awkwardly, realizing Rachel heard everything they said. They weren't sure what to expect from Rachel now – she was the most persistent, driven person they knew, and there she stood, looking like she had just woken up. Neither of them regretted anything they said, as frankly, it was true. Rachel Berry was incredibly talented, but had an ego the size of Texas, and needed to be knocked down a peg. However, as her friends, they knew they needed to walk on eggshells around her, as she was incredibly sensitive.

"Don't you have work soon? Why are you still in your pajamas?" Kurt asked, sounding like a concerned parent.

"I'm skipping today."

Santana let out a sigh. "Come on, Berry, it's not the end of the world."

Rachel flopped onto the couch. "It's the end of MY world, Santana, don't you understand?"

Santana joined her roommate on the couch, putting an arm around her comfortingly. "Look, it sucks, and I'm sorry, but be grateful you got Fanny's understudy. You know how many talented Broadway actresses worked their butts off at their auditions, and they lost out to a 19-year-old college student from Ohio?"

Rachel looked at her sadly, but Santana continued. "I would consider this a win. You're working on your favorite musical of all time! How could this possibly be a bad thing?"

Kurt sat on the coffee table gently. "Santana's right. Plus, we know how much of a hard worker you are. Look how far you've gotten... are you really going to give up now?" He put a hand on her shoulder. "The Rachel Berry I know would keep pushing until she proved to that director that he made a mistake not casting you as the lead. He'll see it, I know it." Santana nodded in agreement.

Stubborn as ever, Rachel shot up onto her feet, storming back into her room, slamming the curtain behind her. "Second best. The understudy is second best! It's like that movie Finn always used to watch says; 'if you ain't first, you're last!'"

"You are NOT quoting Talladega Nights to justify your emotions." Kurt spoke in an appalled tone. As Finn's brother, he knew how much of a fan he was of Will Ferrell movies, but even he wouldn't apply those lessons to real life. "Rachel Barbra Berry, get out here this instant."

Rachel reemerged, dressed and ready for the day. "I'm going to work, but as far as me accepting the role for Funny Girl understudy, forget it. I'm going to call Rupert tonight and tell him I can't." And with that, she stormed out of her apartment, leaving Santana and Kurt to stare at each other disappointedly.

Kitty, Bree, and the rest of the Cheerios were stretching on the gymnasium floor when Sue arrived, a smirk on her face. They knew she was back at school; that was obvious, as Becky's presence was missed, and she never missed school, despite how Coach Roz Washington treated her. But they were shocked to see Sue arrive to Cheerios practice... and so was Roz.

"Well, if it ain't the first piece of sliced bread, that was baked and sliced the day before Betty White's birth!" Roz clutched her clipboard close, staring Sue up and down. "Sue Sylvester, your grown adult baby Robin isn't here. She's suspended for going all Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on us."

"Oh, Roz, how I've missed your implicit stupidity." Sue sighed happily, patting her on the back. "Thanks for holding down the Cheerios fort for me. You can go back to watching Love and Hip Hop... or whatever it is you do."

An offended Roz gasped. "I am an Olympian!"

"Bronze Olympian."

"It is more of an accomplishment than having more wrinkles than a raisin!" Roz retaliated.

"Right. Well, Figgins is on his way out the door, and I'm looking to take his job. When I become principal, I would love for you to take over as Cheerios head coach full time. Until then, stick with diving." Sue put her hand out to shake Roz's.

Roz looked at her hand questionably. "And how do I know you're serious?"

For once, Sue meant what she was saying. "I want to go out with a bang this year and win Nationals one last time as head coach. Obviously, I want to fuel my ego a bit more, but this is also a part of my master plan to destroy Will Schuester and Finn Hudson's hopes and dreams." She explained honestly. "When I become principal, the Cheerios head coach spot is yours. I give you the Sue Sylvester guarantee."

Reluctantly, Roz shook her hand. "You have a deal, but if you go back on your word, I will have you cremated faster than you can say 'Cheerio.'"

Sue nodded, and with that, Roz left the gymnasium. With Roz gone, she was in full control of the Cheerios once again. Picking up a megaphone, she sighed, full of relief, before getting right back to business. "Alright, Cheerios, Coach Sue is back. Gather around; we have a lot to discuss. First order of business; our performance at this week's upcoming assembly, and how we will overshadow the GLEE CLUB."

Bree overheard Sue's mentioning of the glee club and made this an opportunity to approach Kitty. "So, have you thought about my little deal?"

Kitty really liked Artie, and she loved being in glee club, but she cared about how people in school perceived her, and she wanted to be head Cheerio. She wasn't sure what she should do... but she nodded her head and responded, "I'm a Cheerio, through and through."

Bree smirked. "Good."

Ryder walked into the choir room for the first time in forever. He missed it; the way it made him feel, it felt like home. He felt all the stress in the world leave his shoulders, closing his eyes, as he took it all in.

However, the tenseness in his body shortly returned when Finn walked in, Unique walking behind. "Look, I agreed to meet with Finn, but dude, you have to go." Ryder said angrily, shoving his hands into his pockets.

"I am not a dude." Unique said, equally as angry.

Ryder sighed. He had previously misgendered Unique before, but he had learned his lesson and realized how close-minded he had been. Even though he, and many others, used 'dude' as a gender-neutral pronoun, he knew it offended Unique. No matter how upset he was with her, he still wanted to be respectful. "I'm sorry, Unique."

Finn walked over to Ryder, motioning for him and Unique to take a seat. "Look. Unique and I talked about this whole situation, and I think you should hear her out. This is for the greater good of the team. Please?"

Ryder looked at Finn, then at Unique, who had sat down while Finn spoke. Reluctantly, Ryder sat.

With tears in her eyes, Unique began to pour her heart out. "Ryder, I am so sorry for all the emotional and mental distress this situation caused. I never intended to hurt you... I just really liked you. I felt that we came to an understanding over the gender I identify as, and I saw that growth in you, and your willingness to learn and accept attracted me to you. However, I struggle with who I am on a daily basis, and I figured if I don't love myself and the way I look, then you wouldn't, either. That is why I made the Katie account. I just wanted you to like me. It's so hard being who I am, and in hindsight this is so much worse. I ruined everything for not only you, but for myself, and the entire club. I am so sorry."

Ryder began to tear up himself. "I want to forgive you, Unique. I think you're a great girl, who has a great personality and an amazing voice. You are a great friend."

Friend. That part stung for Unique, but she saw it coming, catfish or not.

"I'm grateful you gave me a chance to correct my errors with how I saw you. It taught me a lot. And again, I want to forgive you... I'm just not sure that I can. You don't know the emotional, the mental toll this took on me, and I'm not sure if that's something I can come back from."

Ryder stood up, wiping his tears. "I'm going to have to think about it. Thank you for apologizing." He rushed out of the choir room after that, leaving Finn and Unique in there alone.

Unique looked at Finn, wiping her tears as they continued to fall. "Mr. Hudson, I am so sorry."

Finn smiled, walking over to sit next to, and hug, Unique. "First of all, just call me Finn. And you don't need to apologize to me... what you just said to Ryder, owning up to some of the things you did? That was incredibly brave of you. I'm proud of you, Unique. We just need to give Ryder time."

Unique continued to sob as she embraced him. "Thank you, Finn. Thank you."

While the two were at work, Rachel and Santana spoke while bussing tables. Rachel was still fuming over the whole Funny Girl situation, rambling to Santana as she worked. "Who needs Broadway anyway, right? I mean, seriously. If they won't recognize my talent now, why would they recognize it once I actually HAVE experience under my belt?"

Santana slammed a saltshaker down. "Do you realize how you sound right now?"

Rachel flinched, staring at Santana sadly. "What?"

"You sound like a whiny little brat, Berry. The same one we all hated in high school."

'High school' was almost like a trigger word for Rachel because she decided to snap back at Santana. "I wanted to get Fanny to show everyone at McKinley that no matter how far-fetched their dreams seemed, you could still achieve them. A small-town girl, making her way to the Big Apple and securing her dream role on Broadway... how storybook is that?"

Santana snorted. "Keyword, storybook. That just isn't realistic. Like Kurt and I told you this morning, keep pushing. Show him what a huge mistake this is!"

Rachel began walking away from Santana, making her way behind the counter, and putting the dirty dishes in the sink as she grabbed new silverware and menus to place on the table. "I just don't think it's worth it, Santana."

"Are you kidding? Your lifelong dream suddenly isn't worth it?" Santana rolled her eyes. "Keep focus, Berry. It'll all work out, I swear."

Meanwhile, while Rachel and Santana argued over the whole Funny Girl situation, Artie and Kitty sat outside the school, as they spoke regarding Bree's ultimatum and their relationship. From the outside looking in, one could tell by Artie's facial expressions that the conversation was not going well.

"So let me get this straight. Not only do you still want to keep us private, but you're prepared to quit the glee club to protect your own ego?" Artie didn't understand what the big deal was. Kitty is dating someone in glee club, who also happens to be in a wheelchair. So what? How does that impact her position on a cheerleading squad?

"What else am I supposed to do, Arthur?" Kitty replied in an angry tone, folding her arms as she looked down at Artie, tapping her foot. "It's a dog-eat-dog world on the Cheerios squad. With Brittany gone and Becky suspended, the head Cheerio role is up for grabs. I need that spot if I want to remain relevant within this school."

"But when we win Nationals-"

"Nobody outside of glee club cares if we win Nationals, Artie!" Kitty snapped.

Artie was officially over it. "The glee club has been there for you more than the Cheerios ever would or could be. Mr. Schue and Finn both would go to war for you, whereas Sue would throw you to the wolves in a heartbeat. We can protect you, Kitty. We're your family. We can work this out, I promise!"

{Santana spins Rachel around}

[Santana]

Try to see it my way

Do I have to keep on talking till I can't go on?

{Artie pulls Kitty onto his lap and wheels himself down the ramp into the courtyard, where the band is set up and begins playing music}

[Artie]

While you see it your way

Run the risk of knowing that our love may soon be gone

{Various Cheerios, including Bree, run out to dance background for Artie}

[Santana and Artie]

We can work it out

We can work it out

{Santana shows Rachel a photo of Barbra Streissand}

[Santana]

Think of what you're saying

You can get it wrong and still think that it's alright

{Artie wheels around Kitty, who tries to walk away but is stopped when Artie grabs her hand}

[Artie]

Think of what I'm saying

We can work it out and get it straight or say goodnight

[Santana and Artie]

We can work it out

We can work it out

{Kitty pulls away and begins walking but Artie follows. Meanwhile, Rachel tries to walk away as well but Santana follows}

[Santana and Artie]

Life is very short and there's no time

For fussing and fighting, my friend

I have always thought that it's a crime

So I will ask you once again

{Rachel reluctantly sits at the counter while Santana sings}

[Santana]

Try to see it my way

Only time will tell if I am right or I am wrong

{The Cheerios dance around Kitty, blocking Artie from her}

[Artie]

While you see it your way

There's a chance that we might fall apart before too long

{Artie breaks through the barrier}

[Artie and Santana]

We can work it out

We can work it out

As Santana finished, Rachel took a deep breath and stood up. "I have class." She muttered to herself. "Let's see if my role of NYADA student is taken from me next." She clocked out and left, leaving Santana to groan in frustration. Typical Rachel Berry.

Meanwhile, those in the courtyard returned to what they were doing prior to the number, while the Cheerios stood around as Kitty and Artie stared at each other. Bree walked over to the two and flashed Artie a fake smile before inviting Kitty to join them for lunch. Kitty hesitated, but ultimately walked away with the Cheerios, leaving Artie alone. Both were incredibly upset with the decision Kitty ultimately made... what would come of their relationship now?

"Settle down, children." Principal Figgins addressed the crowd of quiet, blank-faced McKinley students that occupied the bleachers as he approached the microphone to begin the assembly. "Please, keep the noise to a minimum. To celebrate being halfway done with the school year, we will be watching a performance from McKinley High's very own, National champions, the New Directions."

Mr. Schue and Finn stood up to introduce the club, but Figgins was not done yet. "But first, give your multiple hands together for Sue Sylvester's Cheerios."

Pure shock arrived on the glee club co-directors faces. They didn't discuss an 'opening act' for the New Directions. When did Sue put a performance together? The Cheerios ran out onto the gym floor, Bree with a microphone in hand. She waved to the crowd and announced, "Hello McKinley! My name is Bree, and we've got a great performance for you guys. This is a preview for our own Nationals run. Enjoy!" She threw a wink towards Mr. Schue and Finn, which made them realize what should've been blatantly obvious; this was an attack by Sue Sylvester.

{Bree is held up by a group of Cheerios, before jumping down and landing in the center of the gym}

Well, shake it up baby, now

Twist and shout

C'mon c'mon, c'mon c'mon, baby, now

Come on and work it on out

Work it on out

{Bree begins walking through the bleachers, singing to various different boys}

You know you look so good

You know you got me goin' now

{Bree makes her way to where the New Directions are sitting}

Well, shake it up baby, now

Twist and shout

C'mon c'mon, c'mon c'mon, baby, now

Come on and work it on out

Work it on out

{Bree nudges Marley off the bleachers and sits next to Jake}

You know you twist your little girl

You know you twist so fine

{Jake stands up to get away from Bree. Bree also stands up, allowing Jake and Marley to sit back down}

Come on and twist a little closer, now

And let me know that you're mine

{Bree winks at Jake before returning to the gym floor}

Baby, now

Twist and shout

C'mon c'mon, c'mon c'mon, baby, now

Come on and work it on out

{The Cheerios begin to dance, with Bree doing a flip to end the number}

Well shake it, shake it, shake it, baby now

Shake it up baby

The gymnasium cheered loudly as the Cheerios bowed and waved to their audience. The only ones who didn't react were the New Directions, who were fuming. Sue walked by them, whispering to Finn and Mr. Schue, "Checkmate," before returning to her seat by Roz.

"Will, sweetheart, I didn't know Sue was having the Cheerios perform!" Will's wife, and McKinley guidance counselor, Emma Pillsbury, whispered to him as she clapped gently. "I didn't know she had Cheerios who could sing and dance, either."

"Neither did I." Schuester replied, very annoyed.

Bree waved flirtatiously at Jake, who did not respond, as Marley sent death glares her way. If looks could kill, Bree would be six feet under.

Lastly, Kitty looked at Artie longingly as she returned to her seats with Bree and the other Cheerios. Guilt flowed through Kitty's veins, as she didn't even want to perform with the Cheerios, as she knew their performance went on only to spite the New Directions. But to protect herself, and her place on the food chain, she went along with it. As she watched the performance, Bree's behavior around Jake, and Sue's smug looks towards Mr. Schue and Finn, all she could do was think. Is this really what I want? Is this the "family" I want to associate myself with?

Rachel sat, depressed, in one of the various NYADA classrooms, absent-mindedly tapping a piano key. There were various students in the room, each talking amongst themselves as they too were messing with pianos.

Anyway, Rachel was quite upset. She had yet to formally accept the role as Fanny's understudy, and she wasn't sure if she wanted to. She had thought a lot about her conversation with Kurt and Santana at their apartment, and her follow-up with Santana at the Spotlight Diner, and as much as she didn't want to admit it, they were right. Being cast as Fanny right out the gate was a pipe dream – hell, it was a miracle she got the understudy. But from Rachel's perspective, being on the Funny Girl set, living her childhood dream, all while a more experienced actress would be the one who got to perform it for the audience? While Rachel sat backstage and watched, hoping for her day to come? No thanks. Experience or not, it was a detrimental blow to her vision of herself, and she wasn't ready to sit on the sidelines. She was hungry now.

While she went back and forth in her head, Kurt and Santana walked into the room, looking at Rachel like she had three heads. "What's going on in here?" Kurt asked gently, looking around at the various pianos in a room that was typically Cassandra July's studio.

"Carmen Tibideaux needed volunteers for the annual NYADA piano tuning!" Rachel said in a fake enthusiastic tone, turning to her other roommate with a fake smile. "I saw your commercial. I'm happy for you."

Santana audibly laughed for a few minutes, but stopped when she realized Kurt hadn't joined in, and Rachel sat there staring at her. "Wait, are you serious?"

Kurt was equally as surprised. "The Rachel Berry I know would be furious at Santana for breezing into town and beating us at booking the first gig." He looked to Santana and shrugged. "No offense."

"None taken, I'm equally as shocked. Well, not about me being amazing, but about Berry's surprisingly positive tone." Santana put a hand on her hip. "What's wrong with you? Have you thought about what we said?"

Rachel did not respond, but her silence was deafening. Kurt sat next to her. "You can't let your feelings of self-worth be determined by a part in some play!" Santana nodded in agreement.

"It's not just some play. We're talking about Funny Girl here!" Rachel cried. "Besides, that's easy for you to say. You've got an internship at Vogue, and you and Blaine are back together. A-And Santana, you've got the Yeast-i-Stat commercial, and you and Brittany are-"

"Nothing." Santana interrupted. Brittany was clearly her Funny Girl at the moment.

Kurt ignored that last part about Santana and continued. "True, but I'm not depending all my future happiness on it. I am telling you, you've got to get your mojo back. Right here, right now, this second."

{Santana bumps Rachel off the piano bench and begins to play}

[Kurt]

Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner

But he knew it couldn't last

{Kurt lays on Santana's piano}

[Kurt]

Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona

For some California grass

[Kurt and Santana]

Get back

Get back

Woo

Rachel felt a surge of energy flow through her as Kurt and Santana led the NYADA students in a standing ovation for her. She was questioning herself after she got the call from Rupert, and after talking to Kurt and Santana about the situation, she realized what a great opportunity this might be for her. For once in her life, Rachel Berry realized she might have overreacted over something. Her friends were looking out for her; in the grand scheme of things, they were right. Not taking the understudy role would be foolish.

"I'll call Rupert later and accept." She said, laughing as she hugged her friends tightly. "Thank you."

Figgins approached the mic once again. "Thank you for the British Invasion, Coach Sylvester, and company. It is now time for our main event. Will Schuester, Finn Hudson and the New Directions."

As the group all made their way to the stage, Kitty felt all eyes on her. Well, it was really Artie and Bree staring her down, but with all the pressure on her shoulders, it may has well have been the entire gym. The beef between the New Directions and the Cheerios was as old as the glee club itself – she knew how Sue felt about Mr. Schue, and don't even get her started on Finn. She didn't want to be in the middle of things; sure, the Cheerios were the safer option, but she truly enjoyed the glee club. Despite all she had been through with some members of the club, she felt they were a family. They wouldn't abandon her, ever.

And Kitty wouldn't abandon them either. She stood up and walked onto stage, giving Artie a smile, while Bree sulked as their performance began.

{Jake, Marley, Unique and Joe approach their microphone stands while the rest of the glee club dances behind them}

[Jake]

It was twenty years ago today

Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play

[Joe]

They've been going in and out of style

But they're guaranteed to raise a smile

{Jake and Joe stand back-to-back}

[Jake and Joe]

So may I introduce to you

The act you've known for all these years

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

[Jake, Marley, Unique, and Joe]

We're Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

We hope you will enjoy the show

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Sit back and let the evening go

Sgt. Pepper's lonely, Sgt. Pepper's lonely

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

{Sam, Tina, Blaine, Kitty, Artie, and Sugar run out into the crowd to dance alongside the audience. We see Bree roll her eyes, Ryder watching longingly, and Finn taking note of both of them}

[Marley]

I don't really want to stop the show

But I thought that you might like to know

That the singer's going to sing a song

[Marley and Unique]

And he wants you all to sing along

So let me introduce to you

The one and only Billy Shears

{Jake, Marley, Unique, and Joe all use their mic stands as guitars}

[Jake, Marley, Unique, and Joe]

And Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club

[Unique]

Hey!

The applause for the New Directions blew the response to the Cheerios out of the water. Everyone stood to their feet as the entire group took a bow, waving to the crowd.

Kitty took this as an opportunity. The entire school was looking at the glee club, cheering in support for them. She locked eyes with Bree, who was clearly furious at Kitty's participation in the number. She walked from one side of the stage to the other, where Artie sat in his wheelchair, grabbed his face, and passionately kissed him in front of the entire school. Nobody really noticed, except for some of the glee club members, who looked surprised. Bree's head looked like it was about to explode, however; she no longer had any ammunition against Kitty. So, she stomped her way out of the gymnasium in anger. Sue followed.

Ryder left shortly thereafter, but not because he was angry. He was upset. He saw how much fun the glee club was having, and he longed for that feeling again. He had to excuse himself from the assembly to clear his head.

Sue walked into the hallway, where she found Bree sulking on the floor by the lockers.

"Racially ambiguous Santana Lopez?"

Bree looked up. "Who the hell is Santana Lopez?"

Sue smirked. "That's the spirit." She said, walking over and offering to help Bree up. "Quite a performance you put on out there. Didn't know I had a Cheerio who could sing and dance."

Bree accepted her help as Sue pulled her to her feet, brushing off her Cheerios uniform before shrugging. "No big deal. Besides, what about Kitty?"

"Kitty isn't 100% faithful to this team."

Bree rolled her eyes and folded her arms. "Yeah, tell me about it."

Sue wrapped an arm around the Cheerio as she walked down the halls. "As you probably know, Hershey Kiss, my goal is to take down the glee club by any means necessary, and I have a deal that may entice you. I saw the way you looked at Noah Puckerman's black brother from another mother. What would you say if I had a way to get you closer to him?"

Bree stopped in her tracks, looking up at Sue. "You want me to be your mole in the glee club, don't you?"

Sue nodded. "The new Santana Lopez, if you will."

"I have no idea who that is." Bree said obnoxiously, pulling away from Sue and beginning to walk down the hall. However, she stopped and briefly turned around to tell Sue, "I'm in," before walking off.

Sue smirked as she turned the opposite direction to walk back to her office. "Outstanding."

"This is Rupert Campion?"

Rachel sat at the edge of her bed, staring out the window. She was caught off guard when Rupert answered her phone call in a few rings. "Oh! Oh, good afternoon Mr. Campion. This is Rachel Berry."

"Hello, Rachel. Have you given any thought to our offer?"

She hesitated, but ultimately accepted. "Yes, thank you. I-I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I just had to think over my decision before I made it. Yes, I accept. I would love to work on Funny Girl with you."

Rupert chuckled. "That's great. I'm looking forward to having you on board." Brief pause. "Rachel, I know how much you wanted this role, and I'm sure getting the understudy had an impact on your decision. I think you have potential, Rachel. Just make sure to show up to rehearsal on time, know all of your lines, all the choreography, because believe it or not, the understudy is incredibly important to the show, and if something happens, we'll need you."

Rachel nodded. "I understand. I won't let you down."

"Great. Well, we'll be seeing you at rehearsals at the beginning of next week?" He asked.

"You will. Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. Campion."

After this, Rupert hung up. Rachel flopped onto her bed again but smiled to herself this time. She wasn't Fanny Brice... not yet, not in the way she wanted to be. Nevertheless, after taking the time to think things over, she knew that taking the role would be beneficial to her in the long run. It would give her the experience she needed and would prepare her for the future. Rachel Berry wasn't giving up on Funny Girl just yet, and she's glad her friends hadn't given up on her, either.

She walked out into the living room, where Kurt and Santana sipped champagne and watched television. She sat next to them on the couch, thanking them once again for talking some sense into her, as the three watched their show together.

Mr. Schue, Finn, and the entirety of the glee club had gathered in the auditorium to celebrate the completion of Beatles week and their performance at the assembly with one final number to cap off the assignment.

"Finally. Now's my time to perform my next solo!" Tina stood up, walking to the microphone at center stage. "I will be performing Here Comes the Sun."

"How about someone who's never gotten a solo gets one?" Sugar piped up, elbowing Finn. "Maybe like me?"

Kitty muttered, "If anyone should get a solo, it should preferably be someone who can actually sing."

Mr. Schue laughed awkwardly. "I was hoping it could be a group number. Perhaps we can perform Let It Be?"

As the club began murmuring in agreement, footsteps were heard entering the auditorium. Everyone turned around, expecting it to be Sue, bereding them again for who knows what. But they were wrong, as the person who entered the auditorium was someone very familiar to the club. He was a former member of their family, and there he stood, right before them.

It was Ryder Lynn. "Ryder!" Jake jumped up to greet his best friend, embracing him. "Good to see you, man." Marley followed, and suddenly, everyone was going to see Ryder and welcome him back to the club with open arms.

Everyone except Unique, who stayed back, as she didn't want to upset Ryder further. However, Ryder made his way through the crowd to approach Unique himself, giving her a hug. "I forgive you, Unique. I'm sorry I didn't consider your feelings regarding this situation... I was so busy hurting I forgot that you were probably hurting too. This was a tough situation, but like I told you the other day, you're a great person and I want the best for you, and everyone in this club. I missed you guys."

"We missed you too, man! Group hug!" Sam exclaimed happily, as everyone crowded around Ryder and hugged him.

As the club finished their embrace, Ryder spoke up yet again. "Mr. Schue, Finn? If you guys would still have me..."

Mr. Schue didn't allow him to finish. "Ryder, we're a family, and you are always welcome here."

Finn nodded in agreement. "I'm proud of you. Welcome back, Ryder."

Ryder laughed and gave Unique another hug as the entire club bursted into cheers one last time.

{Rachel gets up from the couch}

[Rachel]

When I find myself in times of trouble

Mother Mary comes to me

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

{Rachel pours Santana another glass of champagne}

[Santana]

And in my hour of darkness

She is standing right in front of me

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

[Rachel and Santana]

Let it be, let it be

Let it be, let it be

Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

{Santana takes a sip of her champagne as the scene cuts to the New Directions in the auditorium}

[Tina]

And when the broken-hearted people

Living in the world agree

[Tina and Artie]

There will be an answer, let it be

{Kitty pushes Artie's chair across the stage}

[Kitty]

For though they may be parted

There is still a chance that they will see

[Kitty and Artie]

There will be an answer, let it be

[New Directions]

Let it be, let it be

Let it be, yeah, let it be

There will be an answer let it be

Let it be, let it be

Let it be, yeah, let it be

Whisper words of wisdom

Let it be

{The camera cuts to Finn and Mr. Schue watching proudly as the scene switches back to New York}

[Kurt]

And when the night is cloudy

There is still a light that shines on me

Shine until tomorrow

Let it be

{Kurt takes a sip of his champagne}

[Santana]

I wake up to the sound of music

Mother Mary comes to be

[Kurt and Santana]

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

{The scene cuts back to the New Directions}

[Artie]

Let it be, let it be

Let it be, yeah, let it be

Oh, there will be an answer

Let it be

[New Directions]

Let it be, let it be

Let it be, yeah, let it be

Whisper words of wisom

Let it be
