Hi everybody! So sorry for the delay in the upload of this episode; this was such a loaded episode (longer chapter than usual!) that I had to figure out what to split up between part one and part two. I know a majority of this chapter is taken directly from the actual Movin' Out episode, but there are some unique spins on the source material, plus the returns of Puck, Shelby, and Beth!
Because it took me so long to get this chapter out (compared to previous ones), here's an announcement for the future of Season Five Starring Cory Monteith: The story is getting renewed! There will be plenty more stories to tell within this new universe;
1. Obviously, there will be a SEASON SIX, STARRING CORY MONTEITH. This will tell the story of Finn continuing to teach the New Directions post-graduation of our seniors. However, there is still a gap to fill...
2. SEASON FIVE AND A HALF! Or, if you want, Season 5.5. This will essentially be what 5B was to the actual show, where we see more focus on the New York characters! I know there hasn't been as much focus on the New York storylines, but if you're a fan of that, don't worry, because there will be an entire miniseries focused on Rachel, Kurt, Santana, and the various other characters who will reside in the Big Apple!
Super excited to continue the worldbuilding of this new canon. But, I have a question for you guys:
Should I write Season Six, Starring Cory Monteith and Season 5.5 as new stories (they would be separate fanfictions from Season Five, Starring Cory Monteith), or include them within this fanfiction? I'm just trying to figure out if I should separate the new stories from this one (publishing them as separate stories), or keep them all in one place under this roof. In your reviews, if you wouldn't mind giving me your opinion on this, I really appreciate it! Feel free to PM me as well.
With that being said, let's jump into this extra-long, extra-special edition of Season Five, Starring Cory Monteith!
Episode 5x07: Movin' Out (Part One)
Synopsis: This week, there's a Lima invasion in New York! Blaine reunites with Kurt as he prepares for his NYADA audition, while Sam finds himself questioning his future plans. Also in New York, Finn and Puck (Mark Salling) give Shelby (Idina Menzel) a visit. Meanwhile, in Lima, Jake and Ryder argue over the Marley situation, while Artie's plans to help Becky (Lauren Potter) navigate her future are discouraged by Sue Sylvester.
The halls of William McKinley High were busier than usual. Dozens of local businesses arrived onto campus with booths set up all across the school, advertising their companies to the upcoming graduating class. There were even some colleges with booths set up! As students conversed with those stationed at their booths, as well as fellow classmates, Will Schuester walked down the hall with confusion on his face, noticing a certain trend with each job he saw. Finally, he saw Sue Sylvester, when he made his way through the crowd to approach her. "Hey, Sue. You wanna tell me what's going on around here?"
"Why, it is the first annual McKinley High career fair!" She said cheerfully, handing him a pamphlet as she began to walk away. To her dismay, Schuester followed. "Students can come to expose themselves to the job market, and its entry-level corporate recruiters, who we hope, in turn, do not expose themselves to our students."
"Sue-"
"It's not the 90s anymore, William, when any high school dropout can stumble his way into a six-figure salary as COO as a .com startup," Sue interrupted him. "Upon graduation, our students will be entering the most competitive job market in recent history."
Will continued to look around at the various booths. "Sue, the thing that disturbs me is that I don't see a booth for theater, music, dance.. there is nothing here that represents a career in the arts!"
"Well, that's because there is no such thing as a career in the arts!" Sue said, irritatedly. "William, I will not encourage members of this student body to further endanger their already uncertain futures, and the unrealistic, and narcissistic, pursuit of stardom, when the very best they are likely to achieve is coaching a high school glee club, being best friends with an overweight, 19 year-old army deserter, and marrying a redheaded, googley-eyed homo afarenis with early-onset-dressing-like-an-old-lady disorder." She took another pamphlet and poked Schuester in the chest with it before handing it to him and continuing to walk. "Not gonna do it! However, if you'd like to set up a stool between salad artistry and fecal sculpture, you are more than welcome to regale passersby with your inspiring story of how you dreamt of Broadway stardom, and ended up rapping for high schoolers."
Will stood in the hallway, dejected. "Figgins signed off on all of this? He didn't want any arts representation?"
"You spend so much time making your hair look like Olympia Dukakis's merkin, you must've forgotten," Sue looked around, opening her arms. "Retirement is in his sights, William, after a long career as a high school principal, not a Bollywood actor. This job fair was my idea. Figgins is on his way out, and the superintendent is gung-ho on naming one Sue Sylvester his replacement. Get used to this face as the brains behind this operation, William." She winked and finally walked away, with Will continuing to stay put in the middle of the hall, defeated.
Meanwhile, the glee club stood in the choir room, surrounding the piano, making small talk, when Mr. Schue finally arrived.
"Hey, guys," He put his briefcase on a chair and joined them at the piano. "In spite of the complete lack of representation at the career fair, I know a lot of you are thinking of a career in the arts. It's no secret that Sue Sylvester doesn't think an artistic career is a very practical idea, and for once, I have to admit, she's right. It's completely impractical... anyone pursuing the arts need to go in with their eyes wide open. We're talking zero job security and impossible odds, but I've always believed that you have to pursue what you love." He walked over to the whiteboard and grabbed a marker and began to write down a name. "That's why this week's assignment is about a goofy looking kid that struggled for years in the music business."
Kitty, who sat on top of the piano, whispered to Artie in excitement, "Finally, it's Marilyn Manson week!"
"Close!" Mr. Schue said, turning back to the kids as he pointed to the whiteboard. "Billy Joel!"
"Who?" Unique asked.
"Oh, just a musical genius who sold over 150 million records worldwide!" Artie chastised, offended. Unique put her hand up in defense.
"That's right," Mr. Schue said in agreement. "Billy had to fight every step of the way in his career. He had countless failures and disappointments; writing songs that nobody wanted, playing piano in seedy bars just to pay the rent, being told he'd never make it because he didn't look right!"
Jake, who sat in a chair next to Mr. Schue, spoke up. "Translation... he looked a little Jewish!" A couple of his classmates giggled at his comment, but Jake's eyes were locked on Marley. She briefly made eye contact with him before turning back to look at Mr. Schue, clearly still upset with him. This lack of affection was starting to become apparent to those who weren't aware that Marley and Jake were on the rocks; Ryder picked up on the facial expressions of the two, and made a mental note to talk to Jake about it.
Mr. Schue continued, "But he ignored the haters and he kept pursuing his dream, becoming the third best-selling solo artist of all time. I mean, he is a true inspiration for anyone pursuing a career in the arts... like our very own Blaine Anderson and Sam Evans!" Everyone began to cheer for the two, who they had all grown to love over the years.
As the celebration died down, Blaine, who sat on the piano stool with Tina, began to announce, "As some of you may or may not know, this week is my big NYADA audition. I know it's terrifying, so I'm leaving today to get some last minute tips from Kurt and Rachel."
Sam continued, "I'm going with him because I have an interview with the theater department of Hunter College... they saw and loved my Tornado Talent impressions reel. I'm also up for this awesome scholarship; the Channing Tatum Former Male Stripper Grant!"
Everyone began to cheer again as Mr. Schue quickly added, "Finn will also be absent this week; he'll be up north too, visiting both New York and Connecticut."
"Probably going to reunite with Rachel..." Sugar whispered sassily to Tina as the two began to giggle.
Blaine ignored that comment as he continued, "We spoke to Mr. Schue, and because we have to miss this week's lesson, he thought the least we could do is maybe-"
"Kick it off with our very own take on a classic BJ!" Sam spoke proudly, not realizing what he said and how weird it sounded until he saw all the looks he was getting from everyone. "Billy... Billy Joel," he clarified, before signaling to Blaine to begin playing the piano. "Hit it!"
{Blaine begins to play the piano as the entire glee club begins to dance to the beat}
[Blaine]
Hoo, ooh

{Sam and Blaine board the bus as it takes them through the streets of New York}
[Blaine]
And if that's what you had in mind
[Sam]
Yeah, if that's what you're all about
[Sam and Blaine]
Good luck movin' up, 'cause I'm...
[Sam]
And if that's what you had in mind
[Blaine]
Yeah, if that's what you're all about
[Sam and Blaine]
Good luck movin' up, 'cause I'm
Movin' out
{The scene cuts to Blaine and Sam walking down the hallway of the Kurtcheltana apartment}
[Sam and Blaine]
I'm movin' out
As the song comes to a close, Blaine grabs the door to his boyfriend's apartment and pulls it open, to reveal to Sam their apartment. Nobody was in the living room, so the two just walked in as Blaine closed the door behind him.
"Wow, it's so cool in here. It's like a barn, but like, industrial!" Sam exclaimed.
Sam must've been loud enough for everyone to hear, because instantly Kurt and Rachel both poked their heads out of their rooms. Their eyes widened as they ran out to greet their two friends. Kurt hugged Blaine incredibly tight as Sam and Rachel also hugged each other. Santana walked out of the bathroom, fresh out the shower with a robe on and hair wet, as she waved hello to the two. The gang was getting back together!
Meanwhile, also in New York, Finn and Puck exited the subway as they looked around the Big Apple in awe.
"Is it just me or does it look bigger than when we were here for Nationals?" Puck spoke as he stared at the buildings that towered over them.
Finn, who was never one for big cities, looked displeased as he stood on the sidewalk watching Puck. "Okay, so it's Shelby today and Quinn tomorrow, right?"
Puck nodded. "Did you get the address for her daycare center?"
Finn whipped out his phone and showed a text from Kurt. "Yeah, it's down the block from here. Shining Stars Academy."
Puck, being the instigator that he was, smirked as he saw who sent him the address. "Why didn't you just ask Rachel? It is her mom, after all."
"Dude, relax," Finn said, shoving Puck.
"You tell Penny about her?" Finn shook his head in response and continued walking towards the daycare center, clearly not wanting to discuss the situation right now. Puck, however, did. "So you're not telling Penny about Rachel, and you're also not going to visit her while you're here, either."
"I'm not sure yet, okay? I told Kurt I would get lunch with him while I was in town, but I don't know if I'm ready to see her."
"Whatever, man," Puck rolled his eyes as he caught up with Finn. "If you change your mind, I got your back," he said, putting an arm around his buddy. "Thanks for coming with me, by the way."
Finn smiled. "Of course, man. I'm glad I'm here to support you!" The two friends continued onward down the streets of New York City, with determination in their eyes. Puck was a man on a mission, ready to visit his child and hopefully reconnect with his baby mother, while Finn was along for the ride. Deep down, Finn knew his best friend was right about Rachel; he was going to have face her eventually, and with them in the same city, now was as good of a time as any. But, he was nervous, as she didn't know about Penny and he knew deep down he still loved her. Nevertheless, Finn had a lot of friends in New York City, so he knew whatever he decided, he would not be alone.
Back in Lima, Artie wheeled around the halls as he explored the career fair. He wasn't interested in anything the booths had to offer, but he had a break between classes, and he figured this would be a good way to kill some time. As he browsed through some of the pamphlets and made small talk with the company recruiters, he looked up and saw Becky, wearing the top half of a beekeeper uniform. Artie and Becky had known each other since elementary school, and remained friends throughout their academic career, but one thing he noticed was that even though she was a senior, Becky wasn't pursuing any universities to attend in the fall! Concerned, Artie wheeled his way over to her. "Hey, Becky?"
"Hi, hot stuff!" She looked up from what she was doing and smiled. "Wanna suck face and look at my boobs?"
"No... can I ask you something?" He looked up and down at the beekeeper suit.
"Why?" Becky asked as she put the pamphlet down. "What are you going to do?"
"Film school," he replied, "I'm going to college in New York!"
Becky was half-listening as she played with a stuffed animal. "Ew, lame! College is for suckers."
"I know college might not be for everybody, but..." Artie took a deep breath as he responded again patiently, "You know, Becky, when I was looking at schools that were good for people with disabilities, I learned that a lot of them have programs for mentally capable students!" He smiled brightly at her. "I'd be happy to help you do some research!"
Before Becky could even respond, in swooped Sue Sylvester, like a hawk stalking its prey. She grabbed the handles of Artie's wheelchair and said, "Oh, that won't be necessary," answering him on Becky's behalf. "Hey, Becky, will you excuse us for just a sec?" She put on a face smile as she looked to her favorite student.
"Sure thing, Coach!" Becky responded cheerfully as she went back to examining the beekeeper suit with fascination.
Sue unlocked the wheels on Artie's chair as she wheeled him away, whispering into his ear, "What exactly are you doing?"
"I just wanted to make sure that Becky was aware of what all of her options are," Artie stammered nervously. "She can go to college and get a job-"
"She already has a job lined up!" Sue stated bluntly. "Once I replace Figgins as principal, I will be replacing his secretary, Donna, with Becky. She will be known as my 'Beckretary,' and here she will remain indefinitely in a safe, stable environment, working alongside someone who cares very deeply for her."
There has to be some kind of misunderstanding, Artie thought to himself. He knew Sue had a dislike for him and most of the glee kids, but he also knew how much she cared for Becky, as she reminded Sue of her late sister Jean. "I was trying to help..." Artie attempted to explain.
"If you really want to help, Muppet Stephen Hawking, you'll stop inserting yourself in situations you know nothing about." Sue seethed, letting go of the wheelchair and forcefully kicking it, sending Artie flying into the wall. He was able to catch himself before his head collided with the concrete, but what he wasn't able to do was understand Sue's logic. If she truly wanted the best for Becky, why was she trying to keep her in Lima for the rest of her life? He didn't care what Sue thought, however; he was going to try to help Becky in any way he can.
On the other side of the school, Marley was at her locker. As she entered the combination and opened the door, a bouquet of roses fell out of the locker and to her feet. With a frustrated sigh, she kicked the roses to the side and reached into her locker to grab a textbook she needed for class before slamming the door shut and walking away. She knew exactly who this was; it was Jake, attempting to apologize for... whatever. She didn't even know anymore, because she was so angry that Jake was continuing to sneak around with Bree, doing whatever it was they were doing. He swore to never cheat on her, but all signs continued to point to the fact that he did.
Jake, if anything, was persistent. As Marley stormed off from her locker he followed, with a singular rose in hand. He made his way to her and walked next to her, motioning for her to take the rose. "I'm sorry..."
"For breaking into my locker?" Marley responded coldly. She didn't even look at Jake; she just continued walking.
"For breaking your trust." Jake admitted gently.
"Mhm."
As Marley began to turn away from him, Jake quickly grabbed her hand. "Marley, wait." Reluctantly, she did. "I screwed up. I made a stupid mistake, but please, this is a misunderstanding. Just let me explain."
"You shouldn't have to," Marley sighed. "You are who you are, and I knew who you were when I got into this. It was stupid of me to try and change you!"
"I did change," Jake pleaded, holding the rose up once again. "I'm not that guy anymore. Marley, please, just listen-"
"You are. You always will be." Marley replied angrily before pulling out of Jake's grip and finally walking away, leaving him to stand in the hallway with his rose alone. He stared down at it before stomping off to his locker and putting it inside and storming off to the mens locker room.
After walking down the streets of New York for what felt like forever, Finn and Puck finally entered a building that looked like a relatively normal daycare center, with colorful walls and lots of toys, but with a lot of Broadway memorabilia. There were stars plastered everywhere your eyes could see, and an entire mini band set, with a little piano, microphone, drum kit, and even a guitar. There were tiny dressing rooms and a small stage with a spotlight shining down on it. This was exactly how they had both pictured a Broadway themed daycare.
"For a daycare, this shit is boujee!" Puck spoke as he glanced around, nudging Finn while pointing at the mini stage.
"Stuff. This stuff is boujee, Noah."
The two stopped in the doorway as Shelby Corcoran emerged from another room in the daycare center. "Oh, you brought a friend!" She smiled, opening her arms for a hug from Finn. "Finn Hudson. Great to see you, sweetheart." She quickly gave him a hug before pulling away and glancing at Puck awkwardly. Things were undoubtedly strange between the two; she returned to Lima during their senior year and agreed to let him and Quinn begin a relationship with their daughter, who they gave to Shelby shortly after she was born.
Quinn then tried to sabotage Shelby's home life in an attempt to steal Beth back, and Puck hooked up with her. Not to mention, Shelby was also Rachel's birth mother, and Puck had dated her briefly. So, yeah, definitely a strange dynamic between this little "family." Thank God Finn was there, or this reunion might have been even more awkward. Shelby and Puck hugged quickly, but pulled away just as quickly as they came together. She took a deep breath and asked, "How are you boys?"
"I'm helping Mr. Schue run the glee club!" Finn spoke up happily, in an attempt to ease the waters a bit. "I'm also attending the University of Lima to earn a full teaching degree."
"That's amazing, Finn!" Shelby applauded. "You'd be a great teacher. Have you spoken to Rachel yet since getting into town? She and I have only crossed paths a handful of times since I moved out here, but I'm sure she would be thrilled to see you both."
Finn did not respond, as his answer would just make things awkwarder. Not wanting to pry, Shelby switched the topic. "Noah, what have you been up to?"
"I've just been living with Finn," Puck explained. "Keeping him out of line and focused."
"You're a great friend, but what have you been doing for you and your future?" She asked. Another blank stare from her visitors, before shaking her head. "Look, I just put the kids down for a nap. Why don't you boys come by my apartment later this afternoon so you can see Beth? She'd love to see her dad."
Finn and Puck nodded quickly. "Sure, that would be great. We'll go get some lunch and explore the city a bit and we'll meet you there later!" Finn exclaimed happily before dragging Puck out of Shining Stars. The whole point of Finn being there was so things weren't incredibly awkward between Puck and Shelby, and since she brought up Rachel, he felt just as weird as they did.
Well, maybe not just as weird, considering their circumstances, but still, pretty weird.
Regardless, they were here on a mission; to see Beth. As he was slowly beginning to turn his life around, Puck knew he wanted a relationship with his daughter. He didn't want to be seen as a deadbeat like his own father was, so he knew no matter what it took, he was going to build a foundation of a relationship with not only Beth, but Shelby too; they needed to get over their strange past together if Puck was ever going to occupy any kind of role in Beth's life, and he wanted that desperately. He would do whatever it took.
A frustrated Jake sat in the locker room as he lifted weights, alone, with his mind racing. He knew how the situation looked; if he was Marley, he would probably think he was cheating, too. But, the truth was, he wasn't, and he hadn't. He had no intentions of doing that to Marley, no intentions of hurting her.
He realized by not telling her about the full situation, however, that he in turn was hurting her. He knew Marley was uncomfortable with his hanging out with Bree, and he had done his best to distance himself, but when he saw her crying in the hallway... he felt like it would be wrong of him to not say something. Jake Puckerman was a lot of things, but an asshole was not one of them.
Well, not purposely.
Plus, it wasn't that easy to just tell Marley what Bree was so upset about. It just wasn't his place, wasn't his story to share. It was super personal, and had Jake not found her crying, he probably wouldn't know himself, and he wasn't going to go spread it around to his friends, AKA people who hated her guts. Again, not an asshole. But he knew by not telling anyone that his relationship with Marley was being jeopardized. Jake was at a mental crossroads, and he had to let off some steam somehow before he snapped on someone.
"What's going on with you and Marley?" Jake's tranquility was interrupted by Ryder, who stood behind him. He glanced up in the mirror and then back down at his weights, not responding. Ryder, who was irritated without a response, continued to push. "Dude, what's wrong with you?"
"Nothing." Jake responded dismissively, hoping Ryder would get the hint.
"There must be something, because I can't figure out why anybody would screw up the best thing in their life the way you just did." Ryder continued egging Jake on, hoping for a response. "You told me you weren't doing anything with Bree, man."
"I'm not, Ryder!" Jake snapped, throwing the weight on the floor with all his strength. "I don't know how many times I have to say it. I am not doing anything with her, or anyone."
"Proof is in the pudding." Ryder folded his arms, staring him down. "Look, Jake, you're my boy. I'm trying to help you out, because every time she gets brought up, you get defensive. It sure seems like something is up. You know how Marley feels-"
"Don't." Jake walked over, shoving Ryder who quickly stepped back close to Jake. Jake stared him in the eye as he continued, "Don't talk like you know what's going on here, okay, because you don't. It isn't what it seems." He shoved past Ryder, attempting to leave, but was stopped when Ryder grabbed him by the shoulder.
"If this whole situation isn't what it seems, then why not fess up and tell her the truth so you can get out of this mess?" Ryder growled.
"It's complicated."
"How?"
"I can't tell you, dude. Not my story to tell," Jake huffed. "Besides, shouldn't I be getting the benefit of the doubt here? I'll answer that for you; apparently not. According to Marley, people know who I am, they know what I do... get involved at your own risk."
"I can't believe you could be so stupid." Ryder rolled his eyes.
"What do you want from me, Ryder?" Jake asked. "We spend everyday in that room, telling each other to embrace who we are... well, according to everyone around here, I'm nothing but a two-timing, womanizing man-slut who can't change for the girl he loves." He shoved Ryder once again. "I told you, and I told Marley, and I have told everyone that I didn't do it. Nobody wants to believe me? Fine. I-I don't care what you guys say anymore, okay? This is my life, and until you want to hear me out instead of assuming I'm an unfaithful jerk like Marley is, then leave me the hell alone."
{Jake walks away from Ryder and begins to put the weights back on the rack}
Got a call from an old friend
We used to be real close
Said he couldn't go on the American way
{The scene cuts to Jake hitting a punching bag}
Closed the shop, sold the house
Bought a ticket to the West Coast
Now he gives them a standup routine in L.A.
{Jake does a backflip as the scene cuts to the choir room, where he is performing in front of Mr. Schue and the glee club}
I don't need you to worry for me, 'cause I'm alright
{Jake looks directly at Ryder, who glares}
I don't need you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your own life, leave me alone
{Jake looks at Marley, who looks away}
I never said you had to offer me a second chance
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
{Jake looks away as he continues to dance around the choir room}
I still belong
Don't get me wrong
{Jake glances at Unique and Kitty, who are also glaring}
And you can speak your mind
But not on my time
{Jake spins over to the piano and slams his fist on it}
I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life
Go ahead with your old life, leave me alone
{Jake climbs on top of the piano before doing another flip off of it and landing in front of Ryder}
Keep it to yourself, it's my life
As the number concluded, the choir room broke into awkward claps for Jake as everyone glanced concerned at Marley. The only person who gave audible applause was Sugar, who clearly could not read the room. "Good job, Jake, but I could've done better!" She cheered, before Joe elbowed her to stop.
Jake, panting from his performance, looked directly at Marley, and as she looked away, glared at Ryder. Jake knew he was innocent, but with everyone just assuming he was guilty because of his (and his brother's) past really got under his skin. They don't want to believe me? He thought to himself stubbornly. Fine. Who needs them?
Back in New York, everyone sat in the living room, making small talk. Blaine and Sam had just returned from adventuring throughout the city, and Kurt was curious what they were up to. "So, did you boys like the historical sites I recommended?"
"We checked out that deconstructed bathhouse on Saint Mark's, where Tennessee Williams got into that fist fight with Tallulah Bankhead!" Blaine said enthusiastically.
"Oh, yeah, that was awesome!" Sam chimed in happily.
"Cool!" Kurt clapped happily.
Blaine continued, "It was mostly campus visits.. you know, NYU, Columbia."
"Why?" Kurt asked. "You're going to NYADA!"
"I need safety schools, Kurt... I haven't gotten in yet!"
"But you will as soon as you audition," Kurt insisted. "The way I've talked you up to Carmen Tibideaux, she's going to offer you a spot on the spot!" He stood up and motioned for Blaine to follow him. "Come on, let's go to my room and pick the outfit you're going to wear for your NYADA audition." He took Blaine's hand and dragged him into his bedroom.
This left Sam out in the living room with Santana and Rachel. He looked to Santana and asked, "How's Brittany?"
"Don't know, Kylie Jenner," Santana responded coldly, suddenly becoming very interested in the television. "Haven't heard from her since she got to MIT, plus I have a new girlfriend anyway." Santana gave off the attitude that she didn't care about Brittany, but despite dating Dani, she still did; she likely always would. "Have you heard from her at all?"
Sam shook his head. "No... I was hoping you would have." They looked at each other awkwardly before both turning their attention to the television again. Sam and Santana had a strange history; before she came out they briefly dated, but they eventually broke up and remained friends. Their friendship hit a rough patch when Sam began dating Brittany, which made Santana incredibly jealous. They had a bit of a feud for a bit, but eventually put things to rest for Brittany's sake. Sam even called her to Lima around Regionals so she could help Brittany get her head on straight. They both moved on from their issues with each other, but the last time they spoke was regarding Brittany. Santana did not continue the conversation because deep down, she knew there were still feelings for Brittany in her heart, but she did not want to address them.
Rachel, noticing the awkwardness in the room, decided to speak up and break the ice. "So, Sam, how did your visit with Hunter College go?"
Unfortunately, this question contributed to the tenseness in the room as Sam sighed. "Well..."
Sam began to recall his meeting with Arwyyd Johnson, the Dean of Admissions at Hunter College, to Rachel and Santana. "I see your grades have improved over the last couple of semesters..." Johnson began as she flipped through his resume.
"Yeah, I kind of had a breakthrough a few months ago," Sam explained. "I'm not, like, a good student. But, I realized what I was really good at was impressions, so I started doing this impression of a really good high school student, and it's kind of working?"
"Okay..." Johnson took off her glasses and placed them on her desk. "Tell me why you want to go to Hunter."
Sam shifted in his chair. "Well, I don't know that much about it, except that there's more women than guys, and that's great for me. I'm totally into feminist issues! Like, just because women don't make as much as guys do to do the same job, it's totally not cool that they aren't given the same amount of respect. And why can guys go shirtless to the beach and chicks can't?" Johnson gave him a strange look, which he quickly misinterpreted. "Sorry - uh, girls," Sam corrected himself. "You can see I have a lot to learn still."
Arwyyd Johnson took a deep breath as Sam continued, "I'm also super jazzed to go to school in New York City! Hello? All of the diversity..."
She began to close up his resume as she shook her head gently, but Sam once again did not take the hint. "So, you're black! That must be interesting... this is a shot in the dark, but, do you know Mercedes Jones?"
"So, I'm not exactly sure it went well... or maybe it did, and they want to keep me in suspense," Sam concluded.
"Congratulations, Kevin McCallister!" Santana clapped. "You proved to the dean of a real university what we've all known since junior year; you are an absolute idiot. But, who knows? Maybe you'll pull a Legally Blonde and get into some big acting school, and continue to put on your life-long performance of a clownfish." She stood up and said, "I would love to watch speech bubbles come from your mouth like a comic book character, but I have to go to work soon." She gave a fake smile and wave before entering her room, leaving Rachel and Sam alone.
"Can I tell you a secret?" Sam grabbed a pillow and hugged it.
Rachel pushed her hair behind her ears. "Yeah!"
"I don't want to go to college," Sam sighed. "I hate school. I-I mean, I don't hate it, I'm just not good at it."
"Well, who says you have to?"
"I mean, ever since I was a kid, I've seen those United Negro College Fund commercials and it's like, 'if you don't get into college you're letting your whole family down, or you're destined for a life of eating out of dumpsters' or something," Sam vented, squeezing the pillow. "I don't know... don't judge me."
Rachel couldn't help but giggle - even without trying, Sam was really funny. "Look. In life, it's not about knowing what you want, it's about knowing what you can cross off your list that you don't want."
"But I do know what I want to do!" Sam admitted. "It's been my dream since I was a kid; male modeling. It's pretty much the ultimate form of self-expression, as far as I'm concerned. It's like acting or singing, but the only tools you have to perform with are your striking good looks and great abs."
Rachel laughed yet again and nodded. "There is some truth to that..." She agreed, smiling softly at Sam as she watched his mind go to work.
"You probably think I'm crazy, right?"
She shook her head. "No, Sam, I don't. I know a thing or two about chasing your dreams." She stood up and moved to sit next to him on the couch. "Here's what we're gonna do. You're gonna have a photoshoot here, and we're gonna get some modeling shots for you to show to agencies!"
"How?"
"Well, now that Miriam Reign and I are besties, I can pull some strings and get some professionals here to help!" Rachel squealed.
Sam blinked as a smile slowly formed while looking at Rachel. "Do you really think I could be a male model?"
She motioned around to her apartment. "Welcome to New York City, the city where dreams come true!" She gave him a quick hug before getting up and cleaning the dishes. She had to admit, being with Sam was nice. He was a sweet boy, who was very nice, caring, funny, and talented. As she thought about him, she began to blush. Did she have a crush on Sam Evans, or was it nice to hang out with a boy who wasn't Finn?
Rachel then began to ponder a third question; was it nice to hang out with a boy who reminded her so much of Finn?
"Hey, Becky!"
The next day at McKinley, Artie wheeled over to Becky, who was taking a drink from the water fountain. It was a new day, which meant this was a fresh start and a new opportunity to talk to Becky about her post-graduation options. She finished her sip of water and glanced over at Artie. "What do you want, a threesome with Kitty?"
"Um, no..." Artie, who had multiple pamphlets and booklets in his lap, began to shift threw them before handing them to her. "I was doing some research about those college programs I mentioned yesterday, and there are lots. Like, over 200 all over the country. Some of them even have cheerleading!"
Becky was shocked. "I can do cheerleading in college?" She asked in disbelief.
"You can do anything you want, Becky," Artie said supportively. "I want you to know that you have choices, and I'm not gonna give up on you."
"I know I have choices," Becky spat. "My choices are none of your business, Artie. I don't want to go to college, and I don't want your stupid pamphlets!" She tossed the pamphlets back onto his lap, telling him to 'butt out,' as she stomped away.
"Carmen Tibideaux is a classicist, so for your audition, let's try to avoid shocking patterns," Kurt spoke to Blaine as he searched through his closet, looking for potential clothes for him to wear during his big NYADA audition. "Like anything that says, 'Look at me, I'm the center of attention, and this primary color proves it!'".
Blaine sat at the edge of Kurt's bed and gave him a soft smile before slowly becoming less enthused. "Kurt, wait... stop. I have to tell you something."
"Oh no... you've got that look. The look I saw the night after Callbacks. If you cheated on me again, I will not accept sex addiction as an excuse!"
It was good that Kurt and Blaine were able to move past the whole cheating scandal. It showed growth in not only their relationship, but in themselves as individuals. Blaine thought about this as he prepared to admit something to Kurt that he was sure he wouldn't like; in relationships, honesty is the best policy, and from hereon out Blaine knew if he wanted to marry Kurt he needed to take these tough conversations head on. "I don't want to audition for NYADA."
"Well, you can't get in on reputation alone!" Kurt chuckled.
"No no, NYADA is just a performing arts. That's all you can study there," Blaine continued as he poured out his feelings. "I have other passions, other interests I might want to explore in college!"
Kurt plopped down on the bed next to Blaine, folding his right leg over his left as he leaned onto his shoulder. "For instance?"
"Well, you know how much I love kids! Maybe I could do what Finn is doing, and go to school to be a teacher like Mr. Schue? Maybe social work... or pre-med!"
"Of course," Kurt agreed sarcastically. "How could I forget the countless conversations we've had about you wanting to be a doctor?"
"My passion for medicine has always been my secret shame!" He responded defensively. "My first guy crush was George Clooney, AKA Dr. Ross on ER? And, it's no secret what my favorite Milton Bradley game is; Operation." He took a deep breath and laughed softly. "It's such a great relief to be able to tell you this now. I'm just glad I did it before my audition." Blaine looked over at Kurt, who nodded with a strong sense of sarcasm yet again. "What?"
Kurt chuckled turned on the bed to fully face Blaine, who did the same. "We've been together for a long time. Not counting our little break, of course... but I know you. This is a sweet side I don't get to see very often... you're scared."
"Of what?" He responded, confused.
"Look, when I first moved here, I honestly felt like I was Crocodile Dundee. Alright, the city is huge, the buildings are huge, and everywhere you look, it's all these beautiful people who seem to just come from this secret meeting where they just teach you how to make it in the big city!"
"What if I don't get in?" By asking this, Blaine confirmed Kurt's suspicions that deep down, he was scared. He meant it when he said he wanted to explore other passions besides performing, but he did want to take his shot at the big time while he still could. "I mean, you didn't, at first, right?"
"You will." Kurt insisted confidently. "If you don't, it won't matter! You're immensely talented, Blaine, and I know that no matter what you do, you're going to be the best you can be. But, I don't want you to shy away from your greatness just because you're afraid you aren't great enough. You have a gift, and it wouldn't be right to let you hide that away. So, give NYADA a shot... if you don't get in, or if you do and you decide it isn't for you, I will still be by your side."
Blaine smiled softly. "Thank you for knowing me. I love you."
"I love you too!" Kurt hugged his boyfriend before giving him a quick peck on the lips. He continued, "I can't stop you from failing, but I can promise to make it safe if you do." He smiled before jumping up excitedly and exclaiming, "And I also think Santana should do your makeup!"
As Kurt skipped out of the room to go speak to Santana, Blaine flopped back onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling. NYADA and being a performer were Rachel and Kurt's visions for themselves. He always loved music, dancing, and performing, but Blaine knew he was much more than just an aspiring Broadway star. As Kurt once said, I'm not a box. There are more than four sides of me. Blaine had a lot of different avenues he could take, and he felt much more comfortable with his upcoming future knowing Kurt was in his corner.
One of those avenues? Becoming a married man.
He rolled over and reached into his bag to admire the box in which the engagement ring remained inside of. Instantly as he gazed at it, he wondered how he could make a proposal out of his little New York getaway; he was here, Kurt was here, and a majority of their friends were here... it seemed like perfect timing. But, then he thought back to the advice he received from Jan; There is no right time to propose. There's not a right way, or a wrong way, to do it. Planned or not planned, every proposal comes from a place of love, and selflessness, and compassion, and when you pop the question, it will feel 'right' in your heart. Love is like a puzzle; everything will fall right into place if it's meant to be.
As he recalled that advice, he quickly zipped up his backpack and left the engagement ring inside. He loved Kurt with everything he had, but it wasn't 'right' in his heart. He didn't want to force it just because they had a nice moment. He then sat up, took a deep breath, and made his way out of Kurt's room and back into the living room to join his friends. It wasn't now, but his time was coming soon. He could feel it.
"That was probably the best hot dog I've ever eaten," Puck spoke to Finn as they walked up to Shelby's apartment. It had been a few hours since they ran into her at Shining Stars, and they made themselves busy by sightseeing. "I wonder if Beth likes hot dogs."
"Isn't she, like, four years old?" Finn asked. "I don't think babies can eat them."
"If they're cut up, they probably can!"
Finn rolled his eyes and knocked on the door. Shelby quickly answered, waving hello to the boys as she opened the door wider, allowing for them to come in. The two looked around her apartment, which looked very classy and sophisticated, as she quickly ran in one of the bedrooms. When she returned, she had Beth in her arms. Puck gasped as he saw her; it had only been about a year since he saw her but she was getting so big. As she saw Puck she waved, which made him smile widely. She remembered him!
"She looks just like Quinn," Puck spoke in awe. "She's beautiful!"
Shelby motioned to the fridge, where he saw 'Clownpig,' the drawing he made for her the last time they met. "We talk about you all the time," Shelby smiled gently. "I try to remind her of who her father is when I can."
"Puck!" Beth squeaked.
Looking at his daughter, tears flooded Puck's eyes. That was his kid. He made that. It was so strange, being here and seeing her, when just a few years ago he and Quinn gave her up. He was so grateful someone like Shelby took her in, someone that they knew, because otherwise he might not have seen her again. As Beth reached for him, Shelby walked over and handed her to him, and as he held Beth tight he began to cry more. "Hi, baby!" He whispered gently. He stared at her, before looking to Shelby and saying, "I want to be in her life, Shelby. Like, more than just a memory or reminding her of a crappy picture I drew in high school. I want to see her as often as I can."
Shelby folded her arms. "Well-"
"I'm serious, okay?" Puck insisted, placing Beth in a nearby playpen. "Things have changed since you last saw me, Shelby. I don't smoke anymore and I hardly drink, like, ever. I've been responsible, I've been helping Finn with his studies and keeping him out of frat parties..."
"Noah-"
"I have a brother!" He practically shouted before toning down his voice. "I have a brother I barely even knew about before this year. His name is Jake, and he's in the New Directions right now. The way I see it, it's kind of a similar situation to you and Rachel; you went through life, vaguely aware of her existence, and once you knew you had someone put you guys together. You had that kid that Finn hated-"
"Jesse..." Finn interjected with an annoyed tone, which led to a chuckle from Shelby.
"And I had Mr. Schue," Puck continued. "After that, you and Rachel had a good relationship, just like Jake and I. Being a big brother, again, taught me a lot about responsibility and being a good role model. Ever since Jake entered my life I've done what I can to stop being a Lima loser and being a totally badass male figure in his life, because God knows I didn't have one." He looked down to Beth. "I want to be that figure for Beth, too. I don't want her to grow up, having daddy issues and stuff, you know? I know how it felt and it really sucked. Maybe when she meets her uncle, she'll learn from us what not to do or whatever."
"You really have matured since the last time we met, Noah," Shelby admitted. "You can truly see it in the way you hold yourself, the confidence you have. I'm impressed." She walked over and rubbed Beth's head. "I would really love for you to take more of an active role in Beth's life. I can come visit Lima more often, and you can come here, and we can video call so you can see her... I think that would be great for not only her, but for you."
"I'm also going to see Quinn while I'm in the area," Puck blurted. "I think Beth should come see her, too."
Suddenly, Shelby became very apprehensive. "Noah..."
"Look, I know how she acted last time you saw her, but everybody makes mistakes. She's going to Yale now! She's in some lesbian sorority or something-"
Once again, Finn interjected, "She's in an all-female secret society. A-and she's got straight A's! Made Dean's List last semester."
"Yeah, that," Puck agreed.
"She tried to make me look like an unfit parent," Shelby spoke very defensively.
"She was going through a rough patch," Puck responded, himself sounding very defensive of Quinn. "She rediscovered her faith in God, got into a car accident and recovered, helped us win Nationals, and then got into one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Quinn made mistakes, sure, but we all do. She's Beth's biological mother, she deserves to have a spot in her life, just as I do." He folded his arms before looking to Finn, and then to Beth, and then finally to Shelby. "I love Quinn," he spoke softly, "and I think it would be unfair for me to have a chance with Beth while she can't."
Shelby pursed her lips, glancing down at Beth and then at Puck. "I am totally fine with Beth having a relationship with her, but for now, no, you cannot bring her to Yale without me being there. I-I'm just not comfortable with her being alone with Beth yet."
Puck hesitated, then nodded. "Just FaceTime for now." Shelby nodded in agreement. "Thank you, Shelby," he said with relief as he walked over and the two hugged tightly.
As they pulled away, Shelby cupped his face briefly and said, "I'm proud of you, Noah," before pulling away and entering the kitchen. Puck looked up at Finn and the two also hugged, with Finn cheering for his friend.
"So, how is your name pronounced again?" Sam asked Bichette, the owner and manager of the House of Bichette modeling company, as he sat in her office. "I heard it was Bee-shay, but now that I see it spelled out, it looks like it should be Bitch-ette. Like, a little mini bitch?" She looked up from Sam's headshots, studying him as the gears in his head spun. "Is that what your name means in French, or Italian... or whatever it is? Sorry, I tend to talk too much."
Bichette finally spoke, tossing his photos that he took with Miriam's friend on the table. "I'm used to dealing with boys far prettier and considerably stupider than you."
"Oh, cool."
"Look, I agreed to meet with you because I trust Barb Brownfield's eye," Bichette explained. "I must admit, I do respond to your look. Your Midwestern eyes have the vacant stare of a cow, and I don't have any of those on my roster." She then stared at his lips, and as Sam wondered if she wanted to kiss him, she continued, "You have a unique mouth. Your lips are kind of like..."
With an eyeroll, he finished her sentance. "Trouty?"
"Yes!" Bichette exclaimed happily. "That's it. 'Trouty Mouth'."
Sam quickly ignored the mention of his longtime nickname as his eyes gravitated towards a bowl of candy. "Can I have one of these?"
"No," Bichette quickly declined his request, before drawing his attention to his pictures. "These pictures? They're nice, but you need better, and you are gonna pay for those yourself." She winked before standing up and beginning to leave the room.
"Wait!" Sam called, as she turned and looked back. "Are you saying you're gonna sign me? If you do, I swear I won't let you down. I have been working my entire life on different poses-"
"Slow down, Midnight Cowboy!" Bichette barked as she poured herself a glass of champagne. "This is how male modeling works... most of what you'll get will be runway, and you're not gonna get paid for that, but hopefully they'll let you keep some of the clothes. If you book print work, chances are you'll be a shirtless pawn there to enhance the real gem of the shoot; the girl. You'll get paid enough to live in the city! With roommates." She walked back over to her desk and sat. "This is not glamorous, this is not what you think it is! You are one of 10,000 beautiful boys here in New York City, and the word you will hear more than any other you will hear in your brief career? No."
Sam, although clearly disappointed, did not give up. "Well, dreams aren't easy, and I come from a place where even the idea of sitting in this room with you would seem impossible. I know who I am, and I know where I'm headed in life. I can take a few no's along the way!"
Bichette smiled again, coming out from her desk and leaning over the front, pinching Sam's cheek. "I do like you, Trouty Mouth."
"This is awesome!" Sam clapped as he stood up. "I'll take those pictures right away."
"Oh, no you won't!" Bichette quickly changed her tune. "You're gonna have to wait at least a week. You gotta lose 10 pounds!"
"10 pounds doesn't really seem healthy for me..." Sam spoke in reservation. "Do you think I'm fat?"
"Not for Kansas!"
"Ohio." Sam corrected her.
"You are in the big time now, cowboy! The camera likes starvation." Bichette whispered before leaving Sam alone in her office, alone with nothing but his thoughts on this offer. Would it really be worth it to lose himself to make it big?
Jake entered school and began making his way to his locker, as he saw Unique, Kitty, and Ryder talking nearby. He glanced at them longingly; ever since he joined glee club, and participated in the school's production of Grease, he felt like he made a special group of friends that he knew he would have for a lifetime. That feeling grew deeper in Jake's heart when he discovered his older brother, who he didn't know existed, was also in the glee club, and had found himself in the choir room, just as Jake did. It was almost like a Puckerman family tradition that you join your high school glee club and change for the better. Sure, there are some bumps in the road, and Jake currently found himself at one, as Kitty, Unique, and Ryder all glanced back at him with dirty looks on their faces. He was very upset with the way his so-called friends had been treating him ever since the cheating rumor came up, and in another Puckerman family tradition, he was about to let his emotions get the best of him. "Take a picture, it'll last longer."
Kitty scoffed. "Longer than you in a committed relationship, right?"
"I don't understand, why doesn't anybody believe me? I didn't cheat on Marley, and I won't!"
"Dude, the evidence is literally stacked against you," Ryder rolled his eyes as he leaned up against his locker. "I mean, you freaked out on Marley for not wanting to have sex, then you started hanging with Bree one-on-one. You stopped, sure, but then you were all over her in the hallway, even after the crap she said to Unique and Kitty in the choir room, and after Finn booted her."
"I told you, Ryder, there's more to the story-"
"And you sang My Life in glee club like you were the victim!" Ryder interrupted, stepping towards Jake. "All that crap you said to me in the locker room the other day, that you don't care what we think. You forget all that?"
Jake sighed. "Ryder, I'm sorry. I didn't mean any of that, okay? I was frustrated, and I shouldn't have acted like such a-"
"Big shot? Like you're better than us, above us?" Ryder snorted.
{Ryder backs away from Jake}
Well, you went uptown
Ridin' in your limousine
{Ryder puts an arm around Jake as he walks away and continues to sing. Unique and Kitty follow)
With your fine Park Avenue clothes
You had the Dom Pergion in your hand
And the spoon up your nose
Ooh, and when you wake up in the morning
With your head on fire
And your eyes too bloody to see
Go on and cry in your coffee
But don't come bitchin' to me
{The scene cuts to Ryder singing to Jake in the choir room as Unique and Kitty dance in the background}
Because you had to be a big shot, didn't cha
You had to open up your mouth
You had to be a big shot, didn't cha
All your friends were so knocked out
{Jake gets up to talk but Ryder backs him down}
You had to have the last word, last night
You know what everything's about
{Kitty and Unique come and sit next to Jake on either side}
You had to have a white hot spotlight
You had to be a big shot last night, whoa
Yeah
{Ryder begins to dance across the choir room before continuing to sing}
Yes, yes, you had to be a big shot, didn't cha
You had to prove it to the crowd
You had to be a big shot, didn't cha
All your friends were so knocked out
You had to have the last word, last night
You're so much fun to be around
You had to have the front page, bold type
You had to be a big shot last night
Big shot
Big shot
Oh, big shot
Big shot
Ryder finishes the number standing right in front of Jake's chair, with Unique and Kitty still sitting next to him. Jake sighed, beginning to stand. "Ryder, this situation has been incredibly hard to deal with. There's so much going into this, and it's really being blown out of proportion, and I don't know what to do. I let my frustration get the best of me, I took it out on you, and I'm really sorry."
Ryder sighed. "I know, man, and I get it," he said before scratching the back of his neck. "But you gotta figure this out with Marley. Just tell us what happened with Bree and we can help you fix it."
"It's not my place-"
"Boy, tell us, and tell Marley, so you can stop causing her all this pain!" Unique snapped.
Jake took a deep breath. "Fine, I'll tell you. But, you have to promise me... you need to help me help Bree."
"And why would we want to help her?" Kitty asked. "She's a total bitch."
"Because once I tell you, you'll understand a bit better," Jake explained. "But, if I tell you guys, you need to help me help her. Deal?" Everyone exchanged looks, and for the greater good (Marley), they ultimately agreed. "Okay, so here's the deal..."
Later, in Lima, Becky walked into the auditorium, where she found Artie and the band sitting on stage waiting for her. Becky was growing annoyed. She was slowly coming to terms with graduation and college, but she was doing it on her own terms. Her suspension for the shooting really put things into perspective for her as she realized high school didn't last forever and the real world was rapidly approaching, but she wanted to enjoy the end of her senior year in peace. She didn't need Artie to push her. "Quit stalking me, Abrams. Don't make me get a restraining order!"
"I'm not stalking you," Artie chuckled at the thought. "I just want you to chill out for a second and listen to me."
{The band begins to play as Artie wheels into the spotlight and begins singing}
If you search for tenderness
It isn't hard to find
You can have the love you need to live
But if you look for truthfulness
You might just as well be blind
It always seems to be so hard to give
{Artie begins to wheel across the stage as the spotlight, and Becky's eyes, follow him}
Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you
{Becky takes a seat in front of the ramp leading to the stage}
I can find a lover
I can find a friend
I can have security
Until the bitter end
Anyone can comfort me
With promises again
I know, I know
{Artie begins to wheel down the ramp to reach Becky}
Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
{Artie reaches Becky at the bottom of the ramp
And mostly what I need from you
It's what I need from you
"Finally, you're telling the truth! You've been in love with me since kindergarten, I knew it all along!" Much like Sam with the Dean of Admissions at Hunter, Becky completely misinterpreted Artie's message.
"No, Becky!" Artie responded in a panic. "You misunderstood. This song was just my way of telling you that you need to be honest with me, and with yourself." She looked away as he continued, "I think you want to go to college, but you're scared, and that's okay. I'm scared too; I'm terrified of the whole thing! The only way for us to grow is to face our fears and move forward. Am I right? Do you want to go to college?"
Becky took a deep breath as tears swelled up in her eyes. "What if I go, and everybody makes fun of me again?" She asked, in a total emotionally vulnerable moment. "What if everybody calls me stupid like they always used to?"
"They won't," Artie promised. "You'll have all these awesome professors, and counselors, and new friends that will have your back. And all your old friends will have your back too, like me."
"Are you really my friend?"
Tears began to form in Artie's eyes at this point as he smiled. "Always," he responded, choked up.
Becky stood up and rushed over to Artie, hugging him tightly as the two childhood friends embraced each other. Becky knew Artie meant well, but of course, she was scared of the future. Perhaps he was right; embracing the future, and facing your fears is the only way to grow. In that moment, everything seemed right in the world; except for the fact that Sue Sylvester stood in the doorway, staring at the two with what seemed like fury in her eyes.
As Puck played with Beth in the living room, Finn sat at the kitchen island with Shelby, as the two watched. "He really turned things around for himself," Shelby commented gently.
Finn nodded. "Yeah, he did. He's a great friend, a great brother, and seems to be a great father, too."
"Do him a favor?" Shelby asked, as Finn turned to look at her. "As much as he's keeping you in line, you need to keep him in line, too. You guys are best friends and you need to make sure to continue to look out for each other. He needs you, too, you know."
"Yeah, I know," Finn nodded. "I will, I promise."
"Good." Shelby looked back at Puck and Beth before turning to look at Finn again. "So, I couldn't help but notice that you went white as a ghost when I brought up Rachel. Everything okay?"
Finn suddenly felt very nervous. "Oh, uh, everything is fine," he spoke confidently, as if he was trying to assure himself. "We're still great friends and stuff, she's just been busy with Funny Girl, and work, and-"
"And you're seeing someone else, and she doesn't know yet."
Finn gulped and nodded. "I don't really know how to tell her," he admitted to Shelby. "The last time I physically saw her was when we hooked up at Mr. Schue's wedding, and she was with Brody. Since then I've only talked to her over the phone... I don't know. Even if I wanted to get back with her, we're just in two different places in our lives, and I don't know if it would work."
"I didn't ask if you wanted to get back with her, Finn," Shelby giggled.
"Crap." Finn facepalmed and began stuttering like Tina did when they first met. "L-look, I r-really like Penny-"
Shelby couldn't help but laugh harder as she put a hand on Finn's shoulder. "Listen, Finn, you don't need to explain yourself to me. You're a grown man now, and like Puck, you've really matured into a fine adult. You're going to school for your teaching degree and you're getting some hands on experience by coaching the glee club - you really put your life on the right track, and that is absolutely commendable. However, the mature thing to do would be to be transparent with Rachel. I know she wasn't upfront with you about Brody, and that hurt, didn't it?" Finn nodded as Shelby continued, "Rachel would want to know about this Penny girl. Plus, she lives with your brother, so it's kind of hard to not see her while you're here, especially if you're going to visit Kurt."
Finn looked down to his feet. "I don't know, Shelby. I'm worried that if I go to see Rachel, those feelings I had for her will just... come back, you know? Rachel was a huge part of my life, and I will always love her, but I know the moment I lay eyes on her, my mind will go right back to the McKinley auditorium when I met her for the first time."
Shelby nodded. "Did those feelings ever truly leave?" Finn's silence was deafening. "I didn't think so," Shelby teased. "Look, at the very least, you owe it to both yourself, to Rachel, and to your new girlfriend to be honest about your relationship. And you know what? I think you owe it to yourself to give closure to 'Finchel.' Maybe it's not over...?"
Finn looked up and stared blankly at Shelby. She was saying what he was thinking, and to be blunt, she was right. Part of the reason he didn't want to see Rachel was because he knew he still loved her, and he knew he would begin to question his relationship with Penny. But, then again, if he was questioning his relationship with Penny at all, should he even be with her? He had a lot on his mind, and he needed to make a decision quickly, before it was too late.
"Finn!" Puck called from the living room. "I'm leaving tomorrow morning to go to Yale. You coming or what?"
He looked at Shelby before turning around to look at Puck and Beth. "No, I don't think so."
Instantly, Puck knew what Finn would be doing instead. "That's my boy."
"We don't have room for this." Santana complained as she walked into the living room and stared at a full sized piano, as Rachel, Kurt, Blaine, and Sam all sat around it. She pressed down on one of the keys, and she wouldn't dare to admit it, but it sounded great. The piano itself was in great shape, too, but it was huge, and it made their already small apartment feel even smaller.
"Uh, yes, we do!" Kurt interjected. "Right there!"
"Okay, seriously, I'm not gonna be able to survive if you and your hag-Berry are gonna be tickling those ivories, belting out gay hits from Rent and Showboat all day," Santana argued as she took a seat on the couch, folding her arms as she continued to stare at the piano in anger. Sam couldn't help but chuckle at her frustration, but his laughter quickly faded as he still pondered his big decision at hand.
"It's a thank you for allowing me and Sam to stay here!" Blaine insisted.
As Kurt pleaded with his puppy dog eyes to Santana, Rachel walked over with food to accompany their spaghetti dinner. "Okay, you guys, I have some bread here if you want."
"No can do," Sam shook his head as he pushed the bowl of bread away from him. "Right now I'm on this Mentos and flavored air diet."
"Sam, that's ridiculous. You don't need to lose 10 pounds!" Rachel chastised disapprovingly.
Kurt chimed in, agreeing with his roommate. "Yeah, Sam... we all agree. You don't need to be prison camp skinny to be a model! We think you should find another agency, o-or at least weigh out some of your other options besides modeling."
"No!" Sam cried. "House of Bichette is, like, the best agency in town."
"You know what I think?" Blaine asked as he stood up and made his way to the piano. "I think that this argument would be best made in a song!" He took a seat at the piano as Kurt followed excitedly. Rachel also clapped in eager anticipation, while Sam just took a deep breath and rolled his eyes.
For once, Sam and Santana were on the same page. "No, no, no!" She cried. "Do you see this? This is what's going to happen, from every argument, discussion, or meal from now on. It's gonna end in a freaking sing-along!" She stood up in frustration as her eyes darted around the room to the various people who occupied it. "It's bad enough we need to be singing waiters. I can't have this in my home, I need my peaceful place."
"You don't have to sing, Santana..." Blaine teased as he began to play the opening notes to Billy Joel's Just The Way You Are.
"But, I dare you not to!" Kurt continued to egg her on as he took a seat next to Blaine, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.
{Santana stomps into her bedroom as everyone rolls their eyes. Kurt then points to Sam as he sings}
[Kurt]
Don't go changing
To try and please me
You never let me down before
Hmm, hmm, hmm
[Blaine]
Don't imagine you're too familiar
And I don't see you anymore
{Kurt rests his head on Blaine's shoulder as Rachel stands up and grabs Sam's hand}
[Rachel]
I would not leave you in times of trouble
No
We never could have come this far before, ooo
{Rachel drags Sam to the piano}
[Blaine and Rachel]
I took the good times
I'll take the bad times
I'll take you just the way you are
{Sam laughs and finally joins in as he spins Rachel in a circle}
[Sam]
I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
Mmm, mmm
[Kurt and Sam]
I just want someone that I can talk to
[Blaine, Kurt, Rachel, and Sam]
I want you just the way you are
{Kurt, Rachel, and Sam have a group hug, which is promptly interrupted by Santana using a hairbrush as a microphone}
[Santana]
I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
{Santana gives Sam a quick side hug}
[Sam and Santana]
Oh, what will it take 'til you believe in me
The way that I believe in you
{Kurt sits back down at the piano with Blaine as Sam and Santana dance together}
[Blaine and Kurt]
I said I love you
That's forever
And this I promise from the heart
Mmm, mmm, mmm
{Rachel pulls Sam away from Santana as the two dance around the living room. Santana, Blaine, and Kurt all take note of this with raised eyebrows as Kurt gets up to dance with Santana}
[Rachel and Sam]
I couldn't love you any better
[Kurt, Blaine, Sam, and Santana]
I love you just the way you are
[Rachel]
I love you just the way
I love you just the way
[Kurt, Blaine, Rachel, Sam, and Santana]
I love you just the way you are
The number slowly came to a close as Sam and Rachel felt the eyes of all their friends staring at them. Rachel's heart began to race and her face began to feel hot as she pulled away from Sam, once again wondering if she felt the way she felt because of how similar he was to Finn. When there was a knock at the door, she felt relief wash over her as she quickly yelled, "I'll get it!" and raced over to the door. Saved by the bell! She pulled the door open as she pushed the hair out of her face. When she saw who was standing there, her heart began racing even faster and her face began feeling even hotter.
"Finn?"
The scene quickly cuts to Carmen Tibideaux, sitting in the NYADA "Round Room," as she holds auditions for hopeful students. Blaine, who left shortly after Finn's arrival, waits in the lobby for his name to be called.
"Blaine Anderson."
Blaine walked in, clearly very nervous as he approached her to shake her hand. "Madam Tibideaux, it is an honor to meet you."
She glanced at his hand, and reluctantly, shook it. "Kurt Hummel speaks very highly of you. Let's hope you meet expectations." She said bluntly, motioning over to the stage.
Blaine smiled softly at that comment; most people would take that as a backhanded kind of comment, but he had comfort knowing how Kurt had truly done what he could to push the odds into his favor. He still wasn't certain if NYADA was the school for him, but he'd rather get in and accept admission into another school than not get in at all. He wanted to make sure all of his bases were covered. He quickly made his way over to the piano as he took a seat and took a deep breath. "Thank you for your time, Madam Tibideaux. I will be performing my favorite Billy Joel song, Piano Man."
{Blaine begins to play the opening notes to the song as a member of the band behind him whips out a harmonica and begins to play}
It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin
{Blaine starts out rather nervous, which Madam Tibideaux seems to take note of, but he remembers the advice Kurt gave him and begins to put more life into his performance}
He says "Son, can you play me a memory?"
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and sweet, and I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes
La la la de de da
La la de de da da dum
{Tibideaux sits up as she watches the performance}
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling us alright
{Blaine smiles and laughs as he truly has fun with his performance}
La la la de de da
La la de de da da dum
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling us alright
{Blaine finishes the performance with small tears of happiness and pride running down his face, as Tibideaux thanks him and ushers him out of the room}
