Episode 21: Battle In The Tomb
"Where did these guys all come from...?!" Dorothea said as she fired off a Thoron spell, frying an armored knight nearby.
"Beats me!" Lysithea answered as she hurled a large fireball into the enemy soldiers.
"Their colors suggest they're from Adrestia province!" Ferdinand said as he parried a sword slice with his lance, then shoved the sword aside and closed the distance, elbowing the soldier in the face before knocking him down with the lance's blunt end. "Don't you know who I am? I am Ferdinand von- Ahhh!" He gasped as he barely sidestepped an axe swing, dropping his lance and unsheathing a steel sword, swinging up and catching the axe underneath the blade, ripping it from his foe's grip, forcing him to retreat.
"Something tells me they don't care, Ferdie!" Dorothea yelled as she dodged an arrow, returning fire with a wind spell which blew the archer off his feet.
"Clearly not, seeing as my father is the Chief Magistrate!" Linhardt as he unleashed a cutting gale spell which knocked down a grave robber. "I'm thinking these are impostors!"
"Impostors or not, there sure are a lot of them!" Ashe said as he fired an arrow into an enemy's shoulder, Dimitri striking them down soon after, Dedue defending his liege from a revenge attack by another soldier.
"No kidding! I shoot down one, and two more pop up to take his place!" Claude said as he fired arrows in rapid succession into the enemy ranks.
"Didn't think I'd have to put in this much effort...!" Hilda whined as she cut down a lance wielder with her axe, then a nearby axe-man as well. "Could really use Baltie's help right about now...!" A swordsman ran at her from behind, blade raised-
-only for a dagger to imbed in the man's jugular, causing him to collapse and slide across the floor a few feet from his momentum! "Where did that come from...?"
"Sorry I'm late," spoke a suave voice, belonging to a lilac-haired pretty boy. "I'm not Balthus, but hopefully I can do in a pinch."
"Yuri!" Dimitri gasped in recognition. "Where did you come from?"
"The same way these fools did," Yuri Leclerc responded as he drew his short sword and easily parried an axe swing. "And I brought some old friends, too! Now, Hapi!"
There was a sound of a woman sighing, a giant worm suddenly erupting from the floor in the midst of the enemy ranks a second later! "Look out!" one of the soldiers cried, just before he was eaten by the creature!
"Whoa, a demonic beast!" Claude gasped. "You sure know how to make an entrance, Hapi!"
"Guess I should take that as a compliment," said Hapi, the redhead village girl of the Ashen Wolves as she stepped into view, attacking a soldier with a Death spell.
"Hey, I'll take whatever help we can get!" Ashe said as he loosed another arrow. "Especially Yuri!"
"I second that!" exclaimed Lysithea as she followed up with a Bolganone spell.
"The enemy ranks have broken! Now's our chance!" cried Byleth. "Charge!" The students roared as one, bearing down on the enemy...
*Meanwhile, in the throne chamber...*
"Argh!" Rhea cried as she was pushed back from the force of her adversary's attack, panting as she struggled to lift her sword up.
"You've lasted longer than I expected," the Flame Emperor complimented, not looking the slightest bit winded, though his clothes had a few cuts here and there. "But your stamina is clearly expended at this point. Now hand over that girl and... wait, where did she go?" Unknown to the villain, Sothis had gone into spirit form not long after the fight had begun to keep herself safe. "...It matters not. My soldiers should have all exits covered, there is nowhere for her to run. Any last words, bishop?"
"May you burn in a thousand hells!" Rhea spat venomously.
"Ladies first," the Flame Emperor intoned, raising his axe to finish the job... but then the villain heard something, turning around to deflect a surprise attack from another axe! "Wha- you?!"
"Edelgard!" Rhea gasped in surprise. It was indeed Edelgard von Hresvelg herself, wielding an axe the exact same size as the Flame Emperor's.
"Lady Rhea, get clear! I will handle this villain!" The Black Eagles leader went for a horizontal slice, the Flame Emperor parrying it with his own weapon!
"Why are you here?! You're not supposed to be here!" the Flame Emperor hissed with uncharacteristic anger.
"Yuri tipped me off to your little plot!" Edelgard shot back. "Did you think your attempt to push blame onto Adrestia's militia would ever fly?! I think not!" She broke off and swung again, only for her foe to imitate her motion perfectly to deflect it! Again and again their axes clashed, neither giving an inch! (His fighting style, it's...!) "Who taught you how to fight like this?!" she demanded as their weapons locked once more.
"Wouldn't you like to know," the Flame Emperor taunted... but then the villain saw something flying at him, swinging his axe at it- knocking Sothis' crown away. (A trick!) the Flame Emperor realized, just barely getting his axe into position to block Edelgard's attack, albeit being knocked off balance... then crying out in pain as Rhea's sword cut into the left shoulder, breaking away before either could follow up.
"Thank you for giving me a chance to catch my breath," Rhea nodded to Edelgard.
"You're quite welcome, Lady Rhea," Edelgard nodded back, the two taking their stances as they faced their foe, who had one hand favoring the wounded shoulder.
"...So be it. This battle is yours," the Flame Emperor ceded, clearly unpleased with this turn of events. "But mark my words, Edelgard von Hresvelg... you will suffer dearly for this slight!" With that, the fiend teleported away in a flash of light.
"Yeah, you better run! Good riddance, jerk!" Sothis yelled, blowing a raspberry for good measure.
"That will do, little Sothis," Rhea gently chastised. "Edelgard, you have my deepest thanks for your timely assistance."
"Yuri is the one you should be thanking," Edelgard pointed out. "Oh, right. Is this yours?" she said as she kneeled down to pick up Sothis' crown, holding it out to her.
"Thanks," the greenette nodded as she took her headgear and re-donned it. "And it looks like the soldiers outside have been routed as well!"
"Let us go out to them, then," Rhea said, the trio exiting the chamber, seeing Byleth and the other students all still standing. "Is everyone all right?"
"For the most part," Dimitri nodded.
"My lord and I are unharmed," Dedue concurred.
"All good here~! Just a bit sweaty," Hilda chimed in.
"There were some wounds here and there, but nothing my healing magic couldn't patch up," Linhardt reported.
"Or a vulnerary," Ashe added. "But who were those guys, anyway?"
"The Flame Emperor's goons," Sothis spoke up. "While you were all busy, he tried to kidnap me again! And he would've killed Rhea if Edelgard hadn't jumped in when she did!"
"Wait, Edelgard?! Where did you come from?!" Claude gasped, Dimitri and Ferdinand speaking similarly.
"I brought her here along with Hapi," Yuri responded. "You see, I noticed these men clearing out a passage that led to here, so I discreetly killed one of them and put on his clothes, before volunteering myself as a scout, which allowed me to discern what exactly they were up to. I didn't realize the Flame Emperor was leading them until the attack actually occurred, though..."
"I see... so you tricked them into waiting until now to make their move, to ensure that we intercepted them?" Byleth postulated.
"Got it in one, Professor," Yuri smiled and nodded. "And brought along some backup, just in case," he indicated Hapi. "I would have brought Constance as well, but Hapi couldn't find her in time..."
"I found her, but she was out in the sunlight. You know what that means," Hapi deadpanned. "So I decided it was better to go without."
"Well, you have my deepest gratitude for your assistance," Rhea bowed... but then her expression hardened. "Still, such an egregious breach of the monastery, not to mention the Holy Tomb itself... It seems we will need to beef up our security considerably after such blasphemy."
"But are these guys really Adrestia soldiers?" Ashe spoke up.
"No they are not. These uniforms are clever imitations, nothing more. See, the sewing pattern is all wrong," Edelgard pointed to a soldier's corpse.
"Ah yes, of course! I knew all along that they were impostors!" Ferdinand asserted. "For real Adrestia soldiers never would have raised their weapons against Duke Aegir's son! He never would condone such a thing!"
"On that one point, we agree," Edelgard nodded solemnly.
"Well, how about we get out of this graveyard and back into open air?!" Dorothea insisted. "And let the Knights of Seiros and the police investigate this place!"
"I agree with Dorothea. N-not because I'm scared of g-ghosts or anything, mind you!" Lysithea said.
"After that magic show you put on? I don't think any ghost would wanna mess with YOU!" Claude ribbed.
"Right, let's get out of here and let Seteth and the others know what happened," Byleth stated, taking the lead as he and the others made their way out of the tomb...
