PortPol: Secret

When Miguel returned home, he found Feliks on the couch, staring at his phone with earphones in. Feliks didn't usually watch online videos with earphones – something that Miguel had complained a few times about – so he found this strange. He peered over Feliks's shoulder.

"What are you watching?" Miguel asked.

Feliks jumped and yanked the earphones out before rounding on Miguel.

"Like, don't do that!" Feliks exclaimed.

"Sorry," Miguel said, raising his hands. "Didn't mean to scare you. So, what were you watching?"

Feliks's cheeks reddened as he shut his phone screen off.

"It's nothing," Feliks said. "So, like, what are you doing back so early?"

"Ouch," Miguel said, smiling slightly to show that he was joking. "It's nice to see that you don't want me to be here."

"Sorry. That's not what I meant. I'm just… surprised, that's all."

"It's fine. So, I'll be working from home for the next few days. Both bathrooms got backed up, and until they're fixed and the sewerage cleaned, it's best not to be in the office."

Miguel worked for a small company, and their office was basically a house that had been converted to suit their purposes. Feliks nodded in understanding.

"Like, I don't know if that's lucky or sucky for you," Feliks said.

"A bit of both, I guess," Miguel said. "I still need to do my work."

Feliks nodded. Miguel went to the kitchen to start dinner. Once the prep work was done, he returned to the living room, only to find that Feliks wasn't there.

But his phone was, with the earphones still plugged in.

Miguel hesitated. It would be an invasion of privacy and a breach of trust, but he was curious to know what Feliks was watching. He debated with himself for a few seconds more before he reached out and picked Feliks's phone up.

Feliks didn't lock his phone, so it was easy to return where Feliks left off. A brief glance showed that Feliks was using Netflix. He didn't know what caused Feliks to become so embarrassed, and so he placed one of the earphones in his ear and pressed 'play'.

Only for him to jump as the sound of Portuguese came through.

"Like, what are you doing?" Feliks yelped.

Miguel turned to Feliks.

"This is Portuguese?" Miguel asked.

Feliks's face heated up and he averted his gaze.

"I… I've been trying to learn it," he admitted. "I wanted… I hoped that we'd be able to talk together. Eventually."

Miguel couldn't help but smile. It was sweet of Feliks.

"Why the secrecy?" Miguel asked.

"I… I'm worried you'll try to talk to me, and I'm, like, not ready for that yet," Feliks admitted.

"Feliks… I'll be more than happy to help you. And I'll take it slow. But… Um, just so you know… This thing you're listening to… It's Brazilian Portuguese. I speak European Portuguese. There's a difference."

"Like, really?"

Miguel nodded. Still, the thought was sweet.

I've mentioned before that I enjoy learning languages. I've recently been using Netflix to get my ears focused. I try to find something that was originally produced in the target language to get the authentic experience, but I'm not averse to dubs. I watched four episodes of Avatar in German the other night. I had a hard time finding something in European Portuguese for my mother's sake (thank you Google), since she doesn't like Brazilian Portuguese that much (I myself will get to Portuguese eventually, but I'm not there just now, and since I'm busy with Spanish, it's not a good idea at the moment). And on my search, my eyes just caught sight of Polish as one of the options for one or two of those shows, so this pairing for this idea just forced itself to the forefront of my mind.
