"Captain, this was planned to play out just like this."
"How could they know that a kid would be shot?"
"Have you seen news lately? With all respect, brown kids are dying regularly. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that something may happen as things escalated. Eames and I were just discussing that it appeared a powder keg prime for lighting."
Eames added, "Someone wanted to peg us as the responsible party for the attack or the resulting chaos like we are linked with BLM. Even though, Black Lives Matters and Gregory knew nothing tangible to connect them to the threat."
Goren continued, "Even though up until now, we knew nothing of the attack that we were assigned to stop."
Eames started, "Someone wanted us there at the center of it all as bombs went off and mass casualties were reported. They didn't expect Gregory to agree to work with us but he was an easy loose end to tidy. Someone who wanted us to look bad as well."
"Or and someone took advantage of someone, Someone blinded by their hatred and endoctrined so easy to control. Likely, though, the guy we find isn't the mastermind. More like another loose end. We need a run at him," Goren theorized.
"At the Chief of D's, Goren tell me you are joking."
"I wouldn't joke about this. He's got a son named Pat which was mentioned in the audio..."
"audio? I thought that was..."
"Yeah, I still have some pull. Also, his son was identified as the perpetrator by Gregory and he will have an injury of some sort either shrapnel or injured from dodging the blast. Clearly speaking, He has information that he won't share that we need."
"Lets not forget the doxxing."
"Eames are you certain? That's a lofty accusation to be throwing around."
"With every fiber of my being. It tracked to his work computer. And I'm pissed."
Goren huffed and bounced on heels, "So, Captain ...?"
"Be my guest. Word of caution: Tread carefully."
Goren entered the interrogation room abruptly and forceful pushing the table and chair in frustration.
"How the fuck do you know about Brady?"
So much for treading carefully The captain thought as he watched behind the 2-way mirror.
"No pleasantries just straight to it, I see."
"That was personal sealed information."
"I guess you don't remember."
"Remember what?"
"When your mother died, you were a mess. Honestly, I don't know why Ross kept giving you cases. You weren't on your game. On one particular day, you came to work, slammed the papers against Ross' chest for half the department to see. People are nosey and word gets around and so did those results. Unofficially that is. Officially no one would ever use confidential information in any impropriety."
"Impropriety. Yeah you would know about that."
"A little respect I am your superior."
"Aw yeah well I bet you love holding Brady over my head. The astute major case detective with a rapist serial killer for a father. I bet you were clamoring at the bit to use it. You were just waiting for an excuse. As for respect. It has to be earned and you haven't earned mine."
No response
Goren sits on the edge while Eames remained seated in a chair to the side of the table.
"I'm guessing you're not familiar with the code of conduct becoming of the chief of detectives, as you seem to be engaging in conduct un-becoming.
Article 1: Law enforcement officials shall at all times fulfil the duty imposed upon them by law, by serving the community and by protecting all persons against illegal acts, consistent with the high degree of responsibility required by their profession."
No response.
"Article 2: In the performance of their duty, law enforcement officials shall respect and protect human dignity and maintain and uphold the human rights of all persons."
"Enough... enough You want to quote about conduct unbecoming. How about your partner and article 3: Law enforcement officials may use force only when strictly necessary and to the extent required for the performance of their duty. And by the way I did protect against illegal acts you just didn't do your jobs to stop it. Yeah I can memorize and recall just like you."
Goren paused, put his hand to his mouth then down to his side. He shifted in seat and then rested his hands on the table, speaking more softly.
"You're on the force, you don't see what your son was doing was wrong?"
"I love my son. He has the right to express himself and as a father I have the right to protect him. Listen my son isn't too bright, not to be masterminding this. I was hoping you'd figure that out, being the brightest of 36th."
"Crossed our minds."
"So, you see there's someone bigger."
"Two problems. One, your son set the bomb and killed Gregory."
"Who?"
"Your son's scapegoat. He deserved to live and he had a right to express himself. It has to go both ways. And two, if you had given us him in the first place we could have got the bigger guy holding the strings. You are just as if not more culpable for this."
"You sound mad. Are you angry detective?
"Disappointed and tired at the way this world works and the many people dying. I would ask if you felt the same but we know where your loyalties lie and your son's."
"You know nothing about my loyalties outside my duty to my detectives and my family."
"Which you've failed on both accounts."
"My son is young. He can't tell his ass from his head and I figured he'd find his way back eventually. But, to assume that I am at all associated with that type of ideology. A top ranking chief of detectives. You may have lost your mind again Goren and I'm going to give you grace for that as I'm sure old memories are resurfacing for you. But, you better watch what comes out of your mouth next."
"How about you are under the arrest for interfering with an investigation into a terror attack. And you're lucky I don't just hand you to the feds myself. Your son, I will guarantee he never sees the light of day. Read him his Miranda rights."
"You know that won't stick, Goren?"
"Yeah. I know but I hope it sends a message about which side of the law you are supposed to be on. "
Eames rose from her chair, "One more thing I don't appreciate, how I am left holding the bag just so what you or your son doesn't look bad. So here's what's gonna happen: you are going to produce your kid and you are going to give it to me straight."
"I'd do what she says if I were you. Hell has no fury as a woman scorned."
"You can write down his number and whereabouts. If you don't know his current whereabouts write where his usual spots."
He starts to be led out by the clerk when Eames spoke again,
"Oh wait a minute we're not done here"
"What is this ...you do this every time or is this special for me?"
"Oh this one's all yours. And I'd wipe that smile off your face because while yes interfering with an investigation is an easy charge to beat, here's a charge that will stick: Threatening a police detective"
"I didn't threaten either of you."
"The minute those comments went live, you did."
"Releasing confidential information,
"I didn't do that."
"Oh please don't even bothering lying. We spoke to your secretary and found the origin to be from your work computer," Eames continued. Goren made a tsk tsk sound and Eames started speaking again, "You should know better than using your work computer for something like this. Very sloppy and very easy for us to track the flow of information. See, I don't need to have a gun or shield to be a good cop especially, when you make it so easy for me. You put me and my family in danger so you bet your ass I'm pressing charges rank or no rank."
"You better hope it sticks Eames because once it's out there you can't take it back."
"Are you suggesting that payback will be issued? Oh, don't piss me off any more. A brick was thrown through my window. My house was vandalized. My family was targeted at their work and schools. My identity trashed. I'm still trying to get it back. Goren's reputation trashed as well associating him with a serial rapist/killer. Low blow by the way. He's just as pissed as I am. "
"It's his truth."
Eames walked closer to him until they were face to face, "Yeah but he didn't deserved to have that information reach the public. He didn't choose that and you are an asshole for that."
"Wow such lack of respect for superiors," Chief of D's looked at their captain, "you gonna let them talk to me that way."
"You heard her. What you did I struggle to see the good in. You used your rank to control this whole investigation and you bullied me in the process. I don't appreciate that and my detectives are in their right to express themselves after what you pulled. Was it worth it?"
"He's my son."
"You still don't see how you were wrong?" What I do to piss you off to target me and my family?"
"You wouldn't quit investigating. You didn't know when to stop."
"Well you tore my life apart and I still investigated so I guess you lost and now you'll have a lot of time to think about it."
With that, they pushed him through the doors re-cuffed visibly perturbed that he would be called out for his actions. They closed the door behind him. There only remained Detectives Eames and Goren, and their captain.
Eames spoke first to break the silence, "So, we pick Pat up."
"He'll lawyer up for sure. His father thought he was above the law and now he knows he's not. I'm sure he'll send word to his son to stay quiet"
"Goren and I have dealt with worse. We'll get him to talk. It's time to close the book on this. I have to talk to my union rep again and I have a shitstorm to deal with. We need him on the record. It's time Captain."
