Chapter 2: Spring Break Plans

March 20, 2024

New York University

21 year old Nobara Kugisaki was sitting in her economics class taking lecture notes on a topic that she honestly could care less about.

Game theory.

This professor was known to be one of the better options for this specific class. Nobara heard great reviews about her, even though she was known to give out time-consuming assignments.

She had nothing against Professor Young. The only reason that Nobara was uninterested about it was because she was already very aware of what game theory was.

She was surprised herself at how these concepts could be applied in the real world. Funny enough, she had to give credit where credit was due, because her favorite hobby had unintentionally helped her learn!

Thank you shopping.

Nobara would always compare the pricing of similar products at different stores while scrolling through the weekly ads she received. Those came in handy before she planned out what she was going to buy on her shopping trips.

If Company A markets a dress for $100, and Company B decides to market the exact same dress, but only at $90, then what company is more deserving of Nobara's money?

Obviously, she was going to go shop with Company B. Who wouldn't?

If she was loaded, she may have decided to end up buying the dresses at both shops. But unfortunately for her, these annoying things called bills exist.

Speaking of shopping, she could not wait for her professor to finish her boring lecture. She had plans on going to the mall to do some shopping after class with her boyfriend, Megumi Fushiguro. He didn't have any classes today, so he had all the free time in the world for her.

She had been going out with Megumi for over a year now, which honestly was a surprise to the couple because they quite frankly had little compatibility with each other.

She liked to shop and he liked to read.

She liked watermelon and he despised all things sweet.

Her favorite artists were Taylor Swift and Blackpink, while Fushiguro had one song on his playlist on repeat: Weezer's Island in the Sun.

What the hell? Is this guy still stuck in the 2000s? Nobara had pondered about that after hearing it for the 500th time. How Fushiguro didn't get tired of that song was a mystery.

However, Nobara soon discovered that Megumi had a soft side for one thing.

Dogs.

She learned that Fushiguro had owned twin dogs growing up. He told her stories about how he would end up playing with them for long hours after school, instead of doing his homework.

He called the pair his "divine dogs" for some reason; Nobara didn't know. In fact, she had never learned their names or met the dogs for that matter.

After his dogs had passed away, Megumi had become severly depressed, and while he was known to be incredibly stoic and unreserved, losing his furry companions had taken a toll on him.

He hadn't even reacted as much when he was given news about his parents passing away in a car accident after a business trip. He did attend the funeral of course, but the day after, Megumi had just continued on with his life like nothing happened.

It was then that Nobara realized that there was another side of Megumi Fushiguro that probably nobody had ever seen before.

So Nobara decided to surprise Fushiguro on their six-month anniversary with an Akita dog. She had done some research on the breed and how they were incredibly loyal to their owners. The story of the dog Hachiko had torn her to pieces. She knew he would love his gift!

That was the first time that she had seen Fushiguro overcome with emotion. He was honestly speechless and could not believe that Nobara had gone so far for a gift.

She had won the award for the best gift a girl could get her boyfriend. He had given her a passionate kiss which had left the both of them blushing madly red after. Even Fushiguro couldn't comprehend what he had just done.

Nobara laughed at that memory. He was so cute when he acted like that!

The voice of her economics professor, Mrs. Rachel Young, interrupted her from her thoughts as she dismissed the class.

"Don't forget your essays on conditional probability are due the week after spring break!" Professor Young had reminded the fleeing students.

Nobara began to pack up her things, putting her notebook in her backpack and heading straight towards an exit.

As she exited, she heard a familiar tired voice call out to her,

"Where are you off to in such a rush?"

Nobara froze, until she turned around so she could get a clear identity of the speaker.

There he was, her boyfriend, Megumi Fushiguro, looking as bored as ever with his hands in his pockets.

Nobara smirked, and replied teasingly, "Oh, no where really. Just waiting for my no-good boyfriend. You've seen him around? Kind of looks like you, but way cuter."

Fushiguro rolled his eyes, but Nobara could see his lip curve a little into a mocking smirk.

"My, my. How that offends me, beloved. You really know how to hurt a man. Right where it hits him."

Nobara chuckled. Oh, how she loved their sarcastic moments. Unlike most guys she's gone out with, Fushiguro knew how to take a joke.

"Yeah, I'm aware. So you ready to go shopping?"

"Who said I was going to do that? That's what you're going to do. If you need me, I'll be at Barnes & Noble like an adult. I got to catch up on some literature."

Nobara playfully stuck her tongue out at him. "Suit yourself. There's a sale going on at Balenciaga, and I do not plan on missing it."

"Oh dear. Those other girls better watch out."

"Glad to see you have so much faith in your girlfriend."

"I'll make sure to call the police after you end up raiding the place."

Nobara let out a snort. God, Fushiguro was such a guy.

"But seriously, have fun. Meet me at the café nearby when you're finished. I have to talk to you about something."

Nobara wondered briefly what he wanted to tell her, but she put those thoughts behind her, and walked alongside Fushiguro to his car.

Shopping! Shopping! Shopping!

Those were the only words running through her mind as Fushiguro drove. He had Island in the Sun playing again on loop.

Kill me now. Nobara said that out loud too.

Fushiguro laughed.

7:30 PM

After Nobara had indeed raided Balenciaga, she met up with Megumi at the café where they had eaten dinner, and were currently "sharing" some dessert.

More like Nobara was enjoying dessert, Megumi was trading glances between her cake and the black coffee that he had ordered.

He casually took a sip, and when he was sure Nobara wasn't looking, he quickly cut a piece, and attempted to eat it in one bite.

The key word being attempted.

Too bad Nobara already figured out his plan.

She let out a laugh, "If you want one so badly, you can order your own."

"You know I don't like sweets, black coffee is fine with me." he said with his mouth full.

"Really now? Then spit out that piece. You got your coffee. Enjoy that."

Damn it! How could I have gotten caught? He had made sure to rob that piece when she was not looking!

He grabbed a napkin, and when Nobara thought he was indeed going to spit it out, he ate it.

"Asshole."

He smirked, "On a good day."

Nobara rolled her eyes and asked the waiter if she could get another piece. The waiter nodded and informed her it would be out shortly.

"So, what did you want to talk to me about?"

Fushiguro stayed still for a minute. What was he supposed to say again? Yeah, he did have all that time to prepare some sort of script to tell her what exactly what he had wanted from her while she was shopping, but damn it, he took it for granted.

Thanks a lot, Thoreau.

He took a deep breath and spoke.

"You remember Itadori?"

"You mean, your friend with the obsession for Jennifer Lawrence? Yeah, I do. Why? Did she finally get a restraining order on him?"

He snorted. "Not yet unfortunately. But anyways, about him, he's getting married."

Nobara's eyes went wide after hearing that. "Didn't he just turn 21? Isn't it a bit too soon for him to start thinking about that?" Granted, the legal age for marriage in Japan was 20, but Nobara honestly could not believe that a guy like Yuuji Itadori could scoop somebody up so quickly. She would have to meet up with the unlucky bride to be before then.

Yet a small part of her was thrilled that he was getting married because that meant she could go shopping for a nice dress and get some comfortable heels to match with it. Wait, was she even invited to the wedding?

I better be. Nobara viciously thought.

She wondered briefly what it was like to turn legal age in Japan in comparison to the United States.

Growing up in America, Nobara learned that turning 21 just meant you could finally go into a bar and drink a beer without legal consequences. Thank God.

You also could finally wander the gaming floor at the casino. She couldn't wait to play those awesome slot machines with the dragons.

Nobara honestly hadn't thought about getting married. She wasn't sure if Fushiguro was ready to do so either. Even if he was, how would their dream wedding turn out? She had absolutely no idea of what kind of wedding she wanted. School first, weddings later.

Wait, did he even want to get married?

Megumi replied, "Yeah it is, but he still plans on staying in university to get his degree. He only has a little over a year left; he really wants to run his uncle Sukuna's business after."

Nobara nodded at the information. She recalled that Sukuna's Haunted Emporium always had the greatest and scariest Halloween costumes. Their haunted houses, pumpkin decorating events, and costume contests leading up to Halloween also led to great profits. Not to mention that Sukuna's events alone had traumatically scarred kids more than movies like The Shining and The Exorcist. Oh, well. If there was one thing Ryomen Sukuna loved absolutely doing, it was scaring the living shit out of everybody. The most iconic part was that he did it with no regrets.

Nobara commented, "Ah, I see. So, why are you telling me this anyway?"

"Well, with spring break coming up, I was thinking that you could accompany me to his wedding. I'm his best man. Woo hoo." He said that last part with pure sarcasm.

"Oh, is he flying over here to New York?"

"Nope; the wedding is in Japan. We'd have to fly."

Nobara dropped her fork after hearing Fushiguro say that. Wow. A trip to Japan? She couldn't say no to that! Her parents immigrated to New York from Japan a few years before she was born. She always wanted to learn more about the land of her family.

She also remembered her old roommate, Maki Zen'in, being a Japanese native as well. They had gotten along great together when they first moved into their student dorms. Maki left last semester after graduating and returned home. The trip would give Nobara a chance to reconnect with her.

Nobara did not say a word, so Fushiguro took it as a chance to continue.

"What do you think? You could get to learn more about your homeland, as well as the area where I grew up. You could also get to meet my parents. You also mentioned that your old roommate had been from Japan. Perhaps, you could visit her?"

"Yeah, I would love to see Maki again. But wait, I thought your parents had passed away?"

Megumi sighed. "Yeah, my biological ones did. My adoptive parents are still around though. It has been a few years since I last saw them. I was thinking you could be there as support in case the conversation turns hectic."

Nobara could not even imagine how a conversation like that would go. Especially with your parents who you haven't seen in years. It would be extremely awkward.

The conversations she had with her parents when she returned home during school holidays were the same. And she was gone for at most 3 months, so that's saying a lot!

Before she could vocalize her decision, Fushiguro concluded, "Also, if Itadori annoys me, which he most certainly will. It is Itadori after all" he chuckled before continuing, "Who else is going to be able to put him in his place? You know I don't have the energy to deal with him."

Nobara laughed in response. She knew how irritating Itadori could be. Yeah, she'll admit that he was funny sometimes, but other times, she just wished she could punch him straight into Mars.

She had made her decision.

"Alright, okay, I'll go. Nice, I get to enjoy my spring break instead of writing about conditional probability!"

Fushiguro rose an eyebrow at her reaction. He would remind her to take her notes with her on the trip, so she wouldn't regret not doing her homework when they got back.

"Thanks." he said "I can't wait for Japan to finally meet the incredible Nobara Kugisaki."

Fushiguro gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, making her blush, just as the waiter brought out another piece of cake.

"Here you are, young lady. Enjoy!"

"Finally. Thanks! Shall we?"

Megumi grunted something inaudibly, but his lips curved upwards into a smile as she began digging into her slice of cake.

Unbeknownst to the both of them, a young woman had taken a picture of the two, coincidentally, at the same instant Megumi had leaned in to kiss her.

She was able to get a good view of the Megumi Fushiguro, that's right; the; kissing his companion. She couldn't possibly be his new girlfriend, could she?

First of all, she couldn't believe that a rich guy like Megumi Fushiguro had dined at an ordinary café. Originally, she was just going to text her best friend and say that she had spotted him. But she heard him mention that girl's name, Nobara, like she was some sort of heiress.

Just who was this Nobara Kugisaki? Was she only into him for his money?

Given her appearance, most likely.

She was glad to have taken a good picture that clearly showed both this strange new girl and the love of every girl's life back in Japan. After all, Megumi Fushiguro was widely known for being Japan's hottest bachelor. And considering who his father was, that just made every girl fight even harder for his love.

She quickly sent the picture to her friend in Tokyo and informed her that the girl's name was Nobara Kugisaki.

Once the anonymous girl's friend received the texts, she forwarded the information to her other friends. She was also infatuated with Megumi Fushiguro, and couldn't believe that a girl like Nobara Kugisaki could be seen as attractive in Megumi's eyes.

As mass texts were forwarded out by girls and guys alike across Japan, one person had finally gotten a lead on Nobara Kugisaki's social media profiles and leaked them.

In just a few minutes, Nobara Kugisaki became the most hated girl in Japan.
