Chapter 3: Words Traveling

5:00 PM: San Francisco, CA

As more people dove to play the hot new game on the market called "Discover the identity of Fushiguro Megumi's new girlfriend", it was inevitable that this game would involve a few new players.

Satoru Gojo was currently away on a business trip in America to meet with the founders of Gap Inc. He had plans to buy Banana Republic and rename it to ensure business integrity.

He already had the new name figured out.

Bandana Republic.

Gojo was always very disappointed whenever he went to Banana Republic, because he would never find anything banana related. Why would a company have 'banana' in its name if they didn't even market anything that remotely looked like a banana?

The least those scam artists could have done is sold towels with bananas on them! At least then, they wouldn't be subject to further questioning.

Plus, Gojo would make the perfect representative for Bandana Republic, he always took pride in wearing bandanas. Long ago, he had ditched the sunglasses. Bandanas gave him a much more mysterious persona, not to mention they came in handy when he had gotten into arguments with Utahime. If she had said she didn't want to see his face, he didn't have to worry because the bandana shielded his precious eyes from looking at her anyway.

He gladly reminded her of that. Every single time.

That just led to Utahime becoming even angrier and Gojo just knew that meant her handprint would end up on his cheek in the next five seconds.

Man, that woman can hit. Her slaps were immensely stingy, worse than a bee's.

After Gojo had failed to sway the opinions of Banana Republic's chairmen, he decided to head to a nearby bakery to see if he could get his hands on some sweet mochi. Lucky for him, he managed to get the last ones left before the bakery closed for the day.

He was currently in his hotel room watching the news while simultaneously enjoying his dessert. Just as Gojo was about to take another heavenly bite, the news transitioned into their gossip segment.

The women had begun by addressing the main person of topic for today's segment.

Fushiguro Megumi.

As well as the girl he was spotted dining with.

The caption on the tv read: SPOTTED: Fushiguro Megumi and girlfriend(?) enjoying dinner at café in New York City

Not to mention, the picture of his son giving the girl a kiss was placed on the screen. He could tell that it really was him even with his bandana on.

After all, who else in the world was named Megumi Fushiguro?

Gojo took off his bandana and stared at the television with wide eyes. His jaw fell a second later, and he ended up letting go of the poor mochi, spilling its sweet contents on the floor.

This was the first time in nearly two years that he had heard any information about his son. He would never have suspected Megumi to have caught the attention of paparazzi.

He couldn't have possibly intentionally kissed that girl knowing the paparazzi was watching, could he?

Nah, Megumi isn't that smart, that thought made Gojo giggle. He put a hand on his mouth to suppress it from becoming a boisterous laugh.

As the women discussed the identity of the girl, Kugisaki Nobara, he listened intensively to all the theories the women made about who exactly she was. One of them claimed that she had to be some sort of alien who brainwashed him into liking her.

Gojo was just laughing his ass off with every single theory those women made. He did not want to fathom any stupider ideas that could come out of their mouths, so he changed the channel.

He heard his phone buzz, so he grabbed it to figure out the reason. Maybe Utahime had sent him a sappy love message about how she misses him and couldn't wait for him to come back.

Yeah, right.

Unfortunately for Gojo, the notification on his phone was from the news app, and his cute adoptive son and his even cuter eye candy were the topic of the article. He promptly tossed his phone to the side.

Gojo couldn't believe it. He had been wondering about how his son was doing for the past two years ever since he left for New York to attend university. Now that he was on every news outlet across the world…

Looks like a perfect time for a family reunion!

Gojo held no hate towards Nobara. It was good to see his son finally out on the market, especially to a cute girl like her.

Both of them did look pretty happy in that picture—

Damn it, he was out on a business trip! He had no time to focus on such gossip! He had to figure out how to get those greedy businessmen to see the success behind Bandana Republic under the directorship of Satoru Gojo! He could wait another week to learn more about Nobara. After all, Megumi was planning on coming back to Tokyo next week for Yuuji and Yuko's wedding.

He just hoped that Utahime would take the news just as well as he had. He would pray for their safety, more for the girl's than anything. Utahime did not approve of any of the girls their son had gone out with. Granted, he also was not happy with his past girlfriends either. Most of the eligible bachelorettes that showed up on their doorsteps weren't dating their son because of true love.

No, absolutely not. it was because of one thing and one thing only.

Money. Plain and simple.

Fucking gold diggers.

Gojo felt like a bad father for not knowing anything about Megumi's new girlfriend. True, he was not made aware of this relationship until about 5 minutes ago, but still, he should have at least made a better effort in contacting his son. Ever since Toji Fushiguro and his wife had died, he believed that it was his responsibility to make sure that Megumi and Tsumiki were taken care of, prompting him to adopt the siblings.

But after he graduated high school and left Japan to attend college overseas, Gojo felt that he had fucked up as a caretaker. He knew Megumi had never gotten along with other kids his age, and would get into fights at school, much to his dissatisfaction.

Flashback

2015

Gojo had just picked up a 12-year-old Megumi from school early. The principal had called earlier to inform him that Megumi was suspended for beating up his classmate. It was nothing serious; Megumi had just thrown a few, hard punches towards the kid's face. He also had delivered some sharp kicks to his legs. No big deal. The kid would be fine after a month of physical therapy.

As Gojo opened the door, one of the servants had greeted them and requested what they would like for lunch.

Gojo had politely declined, and simply informed him that he needed to have a chat with his son, and he requested to the servant that he not inform Utahime or Tsumiki about their early arrival.

Both father and son had walked upstairs to the guest bedroom; Gojo respected Fushiguro's privacy and he wanted to make sure that this conversation was kept between the both of them.

As Gojo closed the door, he told Megumi to sit, which surprisingly, he complied to doing, but with a deep scowl on his face.

Gojo took off his sunglasses before speaking.

"So… how was school today?" Gojo asked with a silly grin.

Fushiguro's eyes went blank for a moment. He sweat dropped. Seriously? He gets suspended and his dad still decides to ask him that? And with that funny-looking face? Man, why was his dad such a goofball?

"You should already know the answer to that question."

Gojo snickered "Yeah, I do. I just wanted to see your reaction."

Fushiguro growled.

"Woah, chill buddy. Can't you take a joke?"

"Whatever. Can I go to my room now?"

"Not until you tell me how school was."

"I swear to—"

"More specifically." Gojo interrupted before Megumi could finish his sentence "Tell me why you decided to beat up your classmate? What made you think that was okay?"

Fushiguro sighed and mumbled something incoherent under his breath.

"Sorry, Megumi, I didn't quite get that. Could you speak up a little?"

He spoke up, "He was making fun of me."

"Oh, how so?"

Fushiguro responded in a subtle tone, but there was venom in the way he talked "By mocking my parents' deaths, talking about how sad it must be to have ended up being adopted. He had it coming." Fushiguro gritted his teeth at just recalling the douchebag's words.

Gojo sighed. He truthfully couldn't blame Megumi for doing what he did, but he still had parental obligations to fulfill.

"Look, I get where you're coming from. I may have grown up crazy rich, but my childhood wasn't all beach babes too, you know?"

"What do you mean?" Megumi questioned

"Well, honestly, a lot of kids couldn't stand me. With me being head of the Gojo clan, a lot of people were jealous because I was loaded. And oh, did I make sure that everybody knew it." Gojo laughed as he remembered the days where he would show up to school late wearing designer clothing, and bragging about all the trips he would take on his clan's private jet during the summer breaks.

Fushiguro cocked an eyebrow at him. Seriously, did he not realize he took this conversation to a whole different topic? At least the beach babes part finally made sense.

"The point still standing, I took a lot of crap too. You know money doesn't buy happiness, Megumi? On a couple of occasions, I ended up getting kidnapped so that low lives could get some money out of my clan. In exchange for my freedom, the elders just had to fork over 50,000 dollars!" Gojo let out a snort. "Please, even as a child, I knew I was worth more than that."

"So yeah, I was angry at always being a target. I resented the clan afterwards, but do you want to know what I did in response? I decided to stop giving a fuck about all this social class system crap. I stopped bragging about my wealth so that I wouldn't be a target anymore. I just showed up to school in my regular uniform and acted like any other good student would. I made sure not to stand out because I personally could not deal with getting kidnapped again."

"I kept the sunglasses though because they looked cool." Gojo included that last sentence as an afterthought. His sunglasses were awesome!

"Megumi, I am not telling you that it isn't okay to defend yourself. A part of me is proud that you can; what I am not accepting of is you becoming a delinquent. Not only are you causing me and your mom a lot of stress, but Tsumiki is more worried about you every time you end up getting in trouble."

His expression became solemn at the mention of Tsumiki. Tsumiki hated the fact that her younger brother would constantly be fighting at school. She did not undertand why he needed to resort to violence to get a point across. It had made her upset, to which Megumi understood; she honestly had every right to be. Megumi however could not just let the comments of his classmate go unpunished.

Gojo's wristwatch went off, and he took this as a cue to finish talking so that he could return to work.

"I will talk to you later about your punishment, Megumi. I have to get back to work. I won't tell your mom or sister about what happened. I believe I'm not at liberty to do so. You are. See you tonight."

With that, Gojo exited the guest room, leaving his son to reflect on their conversation.

Flashback End

While Satoru Gojo did not take pride in having to lecture Megumi, he was glad for having those conversations with him. It had significantly contributed to his personal growth, helping him become a better person. He just hoped Megumi had took his advice and decided to attend therapy. He believed with the right resources, his son would be able to become a happier person. Maybe, he could even help his old man with the family business. He did need someone to help him balance his books after all. With Megumi working for him, he wouldn't have to pay him! A win-win!

Wait a second. Speaking of money, does Nobara know that his son is crazy rich? Or did she happen to be like all the other bachelorettes who only wanted to become Mrs. Megumi Fushiguro for the green package that came with it?

Or maybe Megumi kept his wealthy status a secret from her? He kind of expected that. That's how Megumi is after all. Quiet.

But if she actually knew about his wealth and didn't care, then that just made Gojo approve of her even more! Girls like her were keepers. Utahime didn't care about his money either; that's why he married her.

The kids wanted them to marry each other more than anything. Both he and Utahime believed it was the best option.

However, those questions could not be given a complete answer. He would have to wait until next week to meet her in person and figure out what she saw in his adorable son. Right now though, Gojo had to figure out where the closest bakery was because he had barely noticed that his beloved mochi had been massacred.

With all the things that had just crossed his mind during the past half-hour, he needed a whole bucket of mochi to get through the rest of his trip.

He let out a happy laugh, already thinking about how much drama next week was going to bring!

9:00 A.M: Tokyo, Japan

Utahime Iori could not be more confused than she was now. This morning's bible study turned quite chaotic. One minute they were reading scriptures, the next minute her friends had nothing else on their mind besides the news about her son's new girlfriend. Mei Mei said that Megumi was supposedly bringing the mysterious girl over to Yuuji Itadori's wedding next week.

She could honestly care less about that gossip. The word of God was much more important than that nonsense. They could interrogate the girl next week all they wanted to when Megumi came back home next week.

Why did they care so much about this new girl so much anyway? She gossiped with her friends about all of her son's past girlfriends, and despised how they were all gold diggers. She did not find any reason to care for the next girl. There was a good chance that she was just like the others.

Unfortunately, Shoko and Mei Mei continued to constantly interrupt her with questions about who this new girl really was. She did not even pay attention to the weird theories her friends were making about the Kugisaki family.

Taiwan Plastic Kugisakis? Yeah right!

Well then, if the 'figure out who Megumi Fushiguro's new girlfriend is' game was such a big deal, and much more important than studying the Bible, then she might as well play along too.

She made her way into the living room and instructed the women to read verses from the Ephesians while she got to the bottom of this.

As she dialed in a phone number and waited for the person on the other line to pick up, she let her mind ponder to wonder more about who her son's new girlfriend was:

Who were the Kugisakis?

Kugisakis… Kugisakis..

Where had she heard that name before?

It was on the tip of her tongue. She knew someone with that exact last name, but who?

Maybe Kugisaki was the clan name of one of her old clients from her work as a miko. Before meeting Gojo and marrying him, she worked at her family's shrine as a part-time housekeeper while still in school. Her family's shrine was the most popular one in Kyoto, so perhaps the girl's parents may have been previous visitors. MeiMei had offered Utahime a private investigator at her disposal to conduct a background check, but she had declined. She just didn't care.

She was excited to see Megumi again, especially since it had been quite some time since they last saw each other. After he announced his departure to study in New York, she hadn't heard a word from him ever since. She had spent the past two years heartbroken over his departure. She had sympathized with both Tsumiki and Megumi when she had first met them, and gladly took on the role of the mother when she married Gojo. She didn't trust that idiot to raise two kids on his own.

Megumi and Tsumiki were easy to handle. Gojo was the one who caused her the most stress.

Thank God for alcohol.

Utahime's thoughts were cut short as she heard the person on the other line pick up.

Time to get some answers.
