Kory opens her eyes. Its morning with the ray of sun shining through the window. She is on a bed and is wearing a white undershirt. She appears confused as she looks around. It's her apartment on Jump City. She doesn't remember getting there. Wait, was everything just a dream?
She quickly gets up and notices the blue shirt she was wearing yesterday perfectly accommodated over a chair. She then looks at her nightstand where there is a note attach to the lamp.
Kory, I enjoyed meeting you, Richard it reads. A preoccupied look appears on her face. So it wasn't a dream.
She quickly leaves her rooms and enters the kitchen, instantly turning on the TV and changing to the news channel. "Going back to our top story of the day here is Bradley Moss with an on-scene report."
Theres another note stuck to the TV. Have a good breakfast, Kory. Kory turns to the table where there a plate with an omelet and two slices of oranges with a glass of juice next to it. Well that was sweet of him.
"According to the FAA sources at approximately seven thirty last night, all contact was lost with a Jump City-bound commuter jet from Gotham." Kory widens her eyes and turns once more to the TV, interested in what it has to say. It shows a reporting talking to the camera. Behind him is the wreckage of the plane with multiple firefighters and police officers inspecting it." The plane was apparently through an area of turbulence and may have encountered a wind shear or a lightning storm causing an electric malfunction."
Kory is suddenly interrupted as there is a knock at the door. Kory stops paying attention to the TV and runs to the door. "Coming!" She yells.
Theres another note by the door. Remember don't tell anyone, Kory. She sticks out the note and opens the door. There she is met by the sight of her longtime friend and ex-boyfriend Roy Harper wearing a blue firefighter uniform, a cap over his ginger color hair.
"Roy?" She asks confused, having just woken up and not expecting him.
A relieved expression can be seen on his face. "Oh, thank God. I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
She lets out a nervous smile as she leans to the side. "Yeah, I am the okay, why you ask?"
"You were on that flight from Gotham, right?" He asks worriedly.
"Yeah."
Now he looks confused. "I saw the news on TV about the crash."
"What news? What is this crash you are talking about?" She answers with an innocent smile.
Roy decides he doesn't want to argue and pushes the thought to the side. "Anyway… you are alive, that's all that matters."
"I am alive."
"Yeah, that's cool." Kory is on her way to close the door when he interrupts. "Hey Kory… mmm…" he thinks looking nervous. "Kory, just you know, I... I told myself that, well, if I found you alive…" He chuckles nervously. She matches his chuckle. "…that… I was going to ask you to dinner."
"How about I call you later, is it okay, Roy?" Kory answers and closes the door before he can answer. She knows its rude, but right now her mind is in another place, plus and she has a fitting to attend in a few minutes.
A couple of minutes later, having already taken a bath and changed, she gets in her blue car and leaves for the fitting.
"It is just another day, another normal day" she repeats to herself trying to calm her nerves.
She doesn't realize as another car starts its engine following her. "She's moving" the driver talks to his communicator.
Kory steps out of the dressing room wearing a short yellow dress.
"Wow, I love it" Komi says wearing the bride's white dress. "And… gotta love the boots."
Kory looks down at her brown boots. She giggles. "I promise I will wear the heels on the day."
Komi smiles. "Hey, can I talk to you for a second, sister dear."
Kory nods. "Yeah."
They step to a corner of the room away from the other brides who are wearing the same yellow dress and are taking pictures of themselves.
"So, this weekend I was thinking of dads GTO…"
Kory smiles happily. "Really?"
"Yeah, its just sitting there and I was wondering how you would feel about maybe selling it..."
Kory is taken aback, her smile instantly disappearing. "You want to sell the GTO of dad?"
Komi takes a step forward, placing a hand over her sister's shoulder. "Karras and I… really want our own place, sister dear."
Kory just looks at her, not knowing what to answer. She had spent all this time and effort into repairing the car as a wedding gift, and now she wants to sell it? Thats not even the important part, that car was from dad, some of the happiest memories she had with him were travelling in that car. "Komi I…"
"Excuse me, excuse me" she is interrupted by a man entering the store. Both turn to him. "Anyone belong that blue car parked outside?"
"Yeah, why?" Kory asks.
"Its about to get a ticket."
Kory exits the store. "I thought I had left enough quarters in there." There she is met by ten or so men in black suits. Kory tries to pass through them, but they stop her. "Excuse me." She says with a smile. She looks behind as they surround her, not a happy look on their faces.
One of them gets out of a black SUV and shows her badge. "Please step inside." He motions to a SUV parked right next to them.
"I… let me just grab a few things" she tries to excuse herself as she turns around but once again, she is blocked.
Another man gets out of the SUV. "Miss Anders, good afternoon. Special agent in charge, Xavier Redd" he introduces himself. "Will you join us inside for a moment, please?"
Inside the SUV, Xavier shows her a profile picture of Richard to Kory, as the SUV moves through the city. Both currently in the backseat.
"We know you were on a flight with him last night, the one that crashed" he says.
Kory looks at him, a nervous look on her eyes. What is she even supposed to answer. "Who are you again?"
"FBI, you do know Mr. Grayson."
"I… uhm no, I do not…" she says not sounding completely sure.
Xavier doesn't like that answer. He presses a button next to the screen of the car. The screen then shows the camera footage of Kory crashing into Richard at the airport. Kory looks at it.
"Uhm, well…" She chuckles nervously. "We talked a little bit before security, but…" she trails.
Xavier nods. "I see… and once you were on the flight, what happened? More talking?" He asks with a smile. Kory chuckles nervously once again. Xavier grows serious. "Is it funny to you?"
Kory's smile disappears. "No."
"He is dangerous, Miss Anders, and out of control."
Kory looks away, thinking. "He… he said that you were going to say he was crazy." She smiles before it disappears, realization hitting her.
"So, you did talk to him and about me, no less."
"No!" She defends. "Not about you specifically."
"Oh, about whom then? Victor Stone?"
Kory shakes her head confused. "I do not know who that is." She tries to smile. "This is getting awfully twisted around and I... I really think I should call a lawyer."
"Hmm…" Xavier thinks about it. In that moment, the SUV stops. He smiles. "Just in time." He looks at Kory. "We are going to get you to a secure location, Miss Anders…" He says motioning to another black SUV parked right next to it. "Until Grayson is contained, somewhere safe." Another man in a suit opens her door.
Kory's face growing increasingly worried as she turns to the man. "With you?"
"Yes, madam."
Kory gets out of the car and is led to this other SUV. The moment she is in, the doors are locked, the engine starts, and they are off, two more black SUVs tailing them as they get on the highway.
"Are you going to tell me where we are going?" She asks the man next to her. Then she turns to the driver and the man next to him. "Any of you?"
"Don't worry Miss; you are safe" the man next to her says.
Kory turns to him. The choice of words making her even more nervous. "Excuse me?"
The man looks at her. "You're safe with us" he says with a smile.
"I want to know where we are going."
"Just a shortcut till the situation is stabilized. Well keep you safe."
Behind them, one of the SUVs engine screeches as it changes to another lane.
"You said that already."
"Because I meant it."
The man turns to the SUV next to them. The men inside seeming in panic with their guns out as they look at something behind. Suddenly there's a gunshot as the driver of that SUV is shot in the head, the SUV staying behind. The smile on the man next to Kory disappears.
Then another gunshot sound as one bullet hits the back glass of their SUV. Kory screams in panic. Then another one hitting the man on the passenger seat killing him.
"Shooter! Shooter! Evade!" The man next to Kory yells.
Kory looks at him. A red dot light moving through his body. "The dot is on you!" She warns
He looks down noticing the dot. He quickly ducks as another bullet comes their way hitting the driver in the head. Kory screams again. The driver dies, his body falling forward and his foot hitting the accelerator as the car quickly gains speed.
The man grabs Kory by the wrist and opens his door. "Follow me now!"
Kory resists. "Are you insane?! I am not going out that door!"
The man gives up and throws himself out the car, leaving a wide-eyed Kory alone inside the speeding car. She peeks behind, the man is rolling on the asphalt as the SUV behind them nearly runs him over. The car gets itself on the opposite line. Kory once again widens her eyes, she throws herself forward and grabs the steering wheel and starts avoiding the incoming traffic and cars honking at her as she drives from behind the driver seat.
She screams as she continues avoiding cars. "Oh, X'Hal!" she cries. She tries to reach forward to try to get the foot out of the accelerator. "Get your feet out of there…"
She suddenly hears a siren. She looks through the rear-view mirror as a man in a police bike is approaching her. She then turns forward, when there is a loud thud coming from above the ceiling and she sees the police bike go flying in front of the car.
Then Richard Grayson of all people falls on the front part of the car, he has a leather jacket and shades over his eyes. Kory screams panic. "Oh, X'Hal!" The car still speeding.
Richard smiles at her and gives a two-finger salute. "Hey Kory."
"I cannot see!" She motions to him to move away.
He lifts his thumb up. "You are doing great!"
"I cannot see! Get out of the way!"
"Open the door, please."
"I cannot get his foot off the gas!"
"Open the door, Kory!"
"I cannot!"
"Open the door!"
"I cannot see."
"Beautiful dress by the way."
Suddenly there's gunfire coming from behind them as Kory ducks and screams. Richard takes out a gun. He looks at Kory. "One second."
He leans to the side and fires two quick bullets. Kory screaming with each gunshot being fired. Another SUV makes its way right next to them. Richard continues shooting, now aiming at the gasoline tank. He fires two more bullets hitting the gas tank and the SUV explodes.
Richard turns to Kory and smiles. In that moment, she notices a giant truck in front of them, Richard blocking most of her view. The horn of the truck blaring. Kory widens her eyes and veers recklessly to the side.
Richard goes flying off the SUV into another car, where he barely manages to hang in. Using his strength, he manages to climb onto the ceiling of the car and stand up.
Kory continues dodging cars coming the opposite way. She looks to the side, where she sees Richard standing up over the car in the next lane. He smiles at her and gives her another two-finger salute. "Who are you?" She watches as he seems to be studying the distance between the two cars. No, no, no, he isn't doing what she is thinking, right? "What are you doing?!"
He doesn't listen to her as he jumps to her car and somehow manages to hang on. Kory gasps. He is lying over the car, his arms to each side hanging in. Kory continues dodging the traffic, not being able to slow down as they get into a tunnel, more cars continue coming their way.
Richard peeks his head from above the ceiling. "Hey Kory" he salutes startling her.
"Move out of the way! I cannot see!"
He calmly motions to the door. "Please unlock the door, Kory." She continues dodging cars. "Unlock the door. That way I can help you" he says in a comprehensive tone.
"I cannot let go!"
"You need to let go, Kory."
Another bullet impacts the windshield barely missing Richard's head. Kory screams. Another one. Richard watches as another black SUV is approaching them from behind. The man in the passenger seat has his upper body out the window and is shooting at them with his machine gun. Richard quickly turns around, takes out his gun and fires at them.
"Kory, door!"
With her left hand, Kory reaches to the door and opens it. "Got it!" A car comes the opposite way sending the door flying into the glass of the chasing SUV as it collides with the windshield killing the driver, and the car crashing to the side.
Kory then reaches forward and takes the foot of the driver off the accelerator, the car slowing down. Richard takes advantage as in a quick move he leans to the side and gets inside the car on the driver seat and throws the body of the driver away.
He smiles at her and continues driving. Kory looks at him, completely out of breath. "Pull over, just pull over!" They get out of the tunnel where they encounter another SUV parked right outside with three of the men shooting at them. Richard shoots back at them. Kory ducks, not really enjoying all of this. "Oh X'Hal!"
Richard hits one of the men as they drive past them. One of the men hits the tires of their car forcing them to come to a halt. Richard quickly gets out, and taking cover behind the car he opens the backdoor for Kory.
"Come on" he says reaching to her.
"Oh X'Hal…"
Kory takes his hand as he guides her taking cover behind the car. "That's it, come here, right over here" he says in a calm voice as they reach the trunk of the car, bullets still flying their way. "Just stay down, you're doing good." Kory just screams with every bullet that hits their car. He hands him his gun. "Hold this." Kory takes it, not really knowing what to do. Still crouched he opens the trunk and looks inside. "Well, well, well…" He takes out a bag from inside and lays it on the asphalt. "Check this out." Inside there are two machine guns. "This guys came prepared" he jokes trying to calm her but is obviously causing the opposite effect. He chuckles. "You are doing great, Kory. Excellent driving." Kory just looks at him completely scared as more bullets continue to hit their car, but he appears not to mind it as he calmly loads the machine gun. "Driving over a dead guy no less, you are a natural." He looks at her again. "Beautiful dress. Is it for Komis wedding?"
She nods, not being able to speak right now as she struggles to breath.
"Saturday?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah, that'll be nice."
"Yeah."
With the corner of her eye, she notices as a man with a gun approaches them from the side, she screams. Richard quickly turns to him and fires multiple bullets from the machine gun killing him.
She gasps anxious as she looks at him and grabs him by the arm. "Please, stop shooting people, please… just stop shooting people" she cries.
Richard looks at her, a worried look on his face. He nods. "I understand… you're in shock." He thinks how he can make her feel as safe as possible. "How about you stay here while I go have a word with the guys down there, okay?"
She nods. "Okay."
"Okay?" He smiles.
"Okay."
He is about to stand up when he stops. "Actually, I'm going to shoot them, but I'll be right back." Better be honest. "By the way, your timing when you opened that door, was sublime."
Kory nods, still having difficulty breathing. "Okay..."
"You saved us, I hope you know that" he adds with a smile. "You saved us."
"Okay…"
Richard winks at her and then stands up firing the machine against the remaining enemies and walks forward to them. Kory peaks from the side of the car as Richard has his back turned to her and is shooting at the three of them. This may be her chance. Kory stands up and runs the opposite way, still carrying the gun he gave her.
Up in the sky, a chopper notices her leaving the scene and follows her.
Kory reaches an avenue where she sees a bus.
"Hey!" She raises her hand trying to stop it, when se realizes she still has the gun in hand. She looks around and throws it in the nearest trashcan. "Hey, wait!"
She gets in the bus, panting, and walks to the back of it. She takes a seat and looks behind, still a worried look on her face. Hopefully she had gotten rid of Richard and the men in suits. She exhales, feeling now better as she runs her hand through her face. It all was just too much for her, she easily could have died.
Suddenly she hears a thud coming from above the ceiling. She looks up, as do the rest of the passenger as well. Then she hears steps as if somebody was walking through the ceiling. The bus stops. Kory looks worried once again, she knows who that it. She ducks trying to hide herself behind the seat in front of her. Then, none other than Richard Grayson enters the bus. He spots her at the back and smiles.
"There you are."
Kory quickly gets up and exits the bus just before the doors were closing, leaving Richard inside.
"Kory?" From inside the moving bus, he watches as she runs away.
A couple of minutes later, Kory reaches the fire station and runs inside.
"Roy?" She asks looking around.
"He's in the gym, over there" one of the firefighters informs her. She nods and enters the gym in a hurry.
She finds him on the bench press lifting over a hundred pounds of weight. He spots and stops. "Hey…"
"Hey…" she salutes breathless from all the running.
Roy stands up and smiles at her. "What are you doing here?"
"I…" How does she explain all that happened?
He notices her dress. "Whoa, that's a…" He looks around. "Hey guys, say hello to Kory." He turns to her. "That's a dress."
"I thank you."
"Everything alright?"
"Yeah… No, it is a…" She covers her face as she tries to think, feeling a bit overwhelmed. She then looks up at him. "It is complicated."
Roy looks at her, a comprehensive look on his face. "You know what, I've been feeling the same way. You want to talk? Maybe over some pie?"
She smiles and nods.
Down at a diner near the station, Roy is finishing his plate with pie. In front of him, Kory hasn't even touched her plate.
"My point is…" Roy starts. "…my point is, that plane crash... made me think about our breakup." Kory chuckles awkwardly. "You know, this bulb went off... like, bing! "Roy, why are you giving up?", "You're being passive. Getting back at her because she didn't want the ring?", "You know, so Kory didn't want to be engaged right now, and that freaks your mom out.""
The whole time, Kory just watches trying to interrupt and tell him what is really happening.
"Big deal" he continues. "What about all the things that you and Kory wanted to do together…"
Kory stops listening to him and looks to the side noticing the news channel showing her running through the city with the gun in her hand. She widens her eyes.
"Our things like camping in Vermont with Oliver…"
Kory looks down, once more feeling overwhelmed. "I want to talk about the plane crash, okay?" She suddenly interrupts him.
That catches Roy off-guard, not liking the change of subject as he felt he was pouring his soul to her. He exhales. "Sure, what about it?"
"I was on it. I mean, in it. I was, I mean, I was in, I was in it" she says gesturing energetically with her hands.
"So you were in the plane crash?"
"I mean, I was not supposed to be on that plane, but I was on it. And then there was this guy who was some sort of, like secret agent! Or something, and he…" She pauses and leans forward to Roy. "He killed everybody on board" she whispers. Roy doesn't answer, he just looks at her as if she were telling a story. "And then he landed the plane. Next thing I know, I wake up in my room. With no idea how I got there, he must have drugged me or something. And then I go to the fitting of Komi, I have to wear this ridiculous dress. These other guys, agents... come..."
Roy smiles sweetly at her, leaning forward and placing his hand over hers.
"…they snatch me up, next thing I know, I am in like this car chase... why are you touching my hand?"
"Because I'm here for you."
She beams at smile at that.
"Geez, you are so stressed out."
"Yeah…"
"And I get it."
"Really?"
"I completely understand, I mean…" Kory exhales feeling relieved.
"I know…"
"Your big sisters getting married and that is stressful."
Kory stops and looks at him. He doesn't believe her. "What?! What are you talking about? Roy, you did not even listen to what I was talking about."
"No… no, I did. Look, I would probably be the same way…"
Kory looks to the side noticing Richard entering the diner with a cap on. He smiles at her. She looks nervous once again. "No, no, no…" Roy follows her gaze to the guy. "No, okay, X'Hal…"
Richard then grabs a chair and places it to the side of their table. He smiles. "Hey Kory."
"Oh, X'Hal…"
Richard then looks at Roy and smiles. "Look, I… I'm sorry if I'm interrupting anything, but… hey, I'm Richard Grayson." He extends his hand.
Roy shakes his hand. "Roy Harper."
"Roy, hi, how are you?" He then turns to Kory. "We're running out of time, and... maybe I didn't make it clear enough, but... we're going to have to stick together for a little bit because of our...you know, situation" he explains that last part looking at Roy, trying to make it seem as if it's something romantic.
"Richard, in case you did not notice, Roy is a fireman, okay?" Kory argues sounding a bit desperate. "So, he is perfectly capable of handling any situation that comes up. I thank you very much, you can leave us alone."
Richard looks at Roy. "Look, I… I have no doubt. Ever since I was a little kid I… I have great respect for firemen.
Roy nods. "Appreciate it."
"Yeah, fact of matter is, I don't think you guy get paid enough."
"No, we don't."
"You're in Engine 10."
Roy is taken aback at that. "Yeah, engine 10."
"Yeah, have you taken your lieutenants exam yet?"
Kory leans forward to Roy as she looks at the exchange between the men.
"Working on it."
"Yeah? How's that going?"
Roy laughs. "It's a bitch."
"Is it? You have to do a tour in that hall, right? What is it, the…"
"Oh, Grove Hall, that's where the action is…" Roy says while smiling.
"Roy…" Kory tries to interject.
"I should have been a fireman" Richard says.
Kory looks at Roy trying to gain his attention. "Roy…" she whispers. He looks at her. "This is the guy" she mouths.
Richard turns to her. "Huh, what?" He asks playing dumb.
"This is the guy" she mouths once again.
"What? "This is the guy"?" Richard asks as he turns to Roy.
Roy stops and looks at Richard. "I'm sorry, who are you?"
Richard looks at Kory. "I'm the guy?" He smiles and turns to Roy. "I'm the guy."
"This is the guy" Kory says, no point in hiding it anymore. Her eyes wide, trying to make Roy understand. "This is the guy."
"This is the guy" Richard shrugs, trying to make it look like a game. "I'm the guy."
"This is the guy" Roy laughs pointing at Richard. Kory just wants to facepalm herself.
Richard matches his laugh. "I'm the guy."
"You are a guy."
Richard turns to Kory. "I'm a guy."
"He is the guy!" Kory yells.
Richard decides he's had enough of this. "Look Roy, whatever happens, I…" he puts on his shades. "For your own safety, you should, please stay in your booth."
Roy looks at him confused. "What are you talking about?"
Richard then suddenly takes out a pair of handcuffs as he cuffs Kory's wrist to his. Then in a quick move, he gets both of them up and takes out a gun. "Everybody down, everybody down!" He yells across the diner. Kory screams. Richard then points his gun across the place. "Everybody down!" The people around oblige as they throw themselves to the ground and scream in panic. Richard then turns to Roy. "Roy, get down, or I will blow her head off!" He threatens pointing the gun at Kory, who screams, now really feeling scared. "I'll blow her head off." He starts walking back trying to get out of the diner.
Roy doesn't get down, so Richard shoots a few inches next to him. "Roy, what did I say?"
Roy automatically goes down, his hands raised trying to calm Richard as if he were just a nervous thief. "Just calm down, sir."
"What did I say?!" A waiter behind Richard accidently lets go of a glass bottle as it crashes on the floor producing a loud noise. Richard panics and throws a kick at him sending him to the ground. He then realizes his mistake. "It's okay, sorry, thought you were making a move." He looks up at the rest of people around as he holds the gun and Kory with the other hand. "Sorry, I'm sorry, thought he was making a move." He then points his gun at a nearby waitress. "Pies for everybody, you hear me? For everybody!" The waitress nods dead scared. "No one follows us, or I'll kill myself and then her" he warns not making any sense. Kory screams again before they leave the diner.
Up in the ceiling a camera is recording everything.
Richard pushes Kory outside the diner and walks to a car parked right in front. Kory gasps. He opens the door.
"Get in the car, please" he asks calmly.
"No."
"Watch your head." Before she can react, he pushes her inside to the passenger seat. He takes the cuffs off and is about to get inside too, when Roy exits the diner, a radio in hand, acting like a cop in a police movie. "Were at 560 Harris Street, they got into a blue Volvo."
"Roy! Roy!" Richard tries to warn holding the gun in his hand.
Roy doesn't listen as he charges at Richard, but he quickly shoots him in the leg. Kory screams. Roy freezes as he feels the bullet in his leg. He touches down, blood coming out of it.
"Oh, X'Hal! Roy!"
Richard runs to Roy and catches him before he hits the ground. "Its okay, look at me. "He grabs his hand. "Look at me, it's alright, it's okay."
"Shit…" Kory whispers from the car.
"I shot you through, no bone near the femoral artery" Richard calmly explains, Roy can only look at him. "Okay? All right? This is going to be better for you and Grove Hall, it's all good."
Roy nods, looking a little confused through the pain. Sirens can be heard approaching in the background. Roy lifts his thumb up.
Richard smiles and stands up. "Good?"
"Good…"
Richard leaves, gets in the car, and starts the engine, Kory by his side.
"There were four security cameras in that…uhm restaurant, Kory. Now there's proof you are my hostage" Richard says as he takes off his cap and continues driving.
Kory looks at him, still scared, he is unpredictable.
He looks at her. "We cleared your name... with the locals at least. You know, it's a… it's a start. Something to build on."
"You shot Roy!" She just says.
"Yeah, I did." He stops. "But I asked him to stay in that booth" he tries to defend himself.
"You shot Roy!"
Richard shrugs. "It might be the best thing to ever happened to him."
"Yeah right, because we all should get shot every now and then!"
"Roy… Roy's a good guy, Kory, but... not really right for you... I mean, you know, in my opinion" he says while looking straight ahead, blushing a bit with that last part. "But a good guy. Took a bullet. He's going to be a hero. Probably a promotion."
Kory can't take it anymore. "Stop the car! Stop the car!"
"What?"
"Stop the car, stop the car, please!" She cries.
"Okay, Kory" he answers trying to calm her, but doesn't slow down.
"Just stop the car!"
"I understand you want off the carousel…"
She doesn't let him finish. "I do! I want to get off the carousel. Please, Richard, I... just... can you stop the car, please? Right now!" She orders while going on a full change of moods.
"I'm not one of those, "I told you so" kind of guys, but I did warn you to stay off the plane last night."
Kory looks at him with a mix of confusion and anger as she tries to remember, when did he warned her. "When?!
"Well, when is said, "Sometimes things happen for a reason", don't you remember?" He thought he had been very clear at that.
"That is not a warning... wha… That is not a warning, Richard! That is like a needlepoint expression, or… or a bumper sticker…" she says, now sounding really angry. "Next time try "Kory, if you get on that plane, you will fucking die!" Huh? You know, Richard, maybe they meant it when they said I would be safe."
Richard for a second appears hurt by her words. "You really mean that, Kory?"
"Yeah" she answers instantly.
"Did you… did you feel safe with them?"
"Safer than I do now!"
"Okay, okay, all right…"
"Thank…"
Then out of nowhere he takes a sharp turn with the car, tires screeching, getting into a thin alleyway, Kory screaming with the sudden turn. He then stops the engine without even parking and gets out of the car, looking a bit pissed. He walks to her side and opens her door getting her out.
"Just so you understand, Kory, right now, out there on your own, your life expectancy is like... this low." He gestures with his hand at a low height. "With me, its here." He gestures higher. "Without me, here." He again gestures lower. He pauses. "With me." He gestures higher. "Without me." Lower. The whole time, Kory following his hand go up and down. "So, I wouldn't advice going home, but you know, its up to you." He sounds really tired of all this. He pauses and thinks as he looks around. "Right now, I need a car, keep moving." He opens the trunk of the car and takes out his black bag. "Right now, somebody is counting on me, somebody whose life is in danger, somebody who trusts me." He looks at her. "Every second I waste chasing you, I'm letting him down." With that, he turns around and walks away.
Kory looks down, thinking, analyzing her options.
Richard reaches a car in the alleyway, elbows the window, shattering the glass and reaches inside opening it. He then gets in and starts working the wires, trying to start the engine.
She turns to him. Should she do it? Go with him?
Once he made it work, he leans backward into the seat and exhales. Damn, what had he done wrong? Even though this is what she wanted, he still feels as if he failed her.
She lets out a deep breath and walks to the car.
A couple of hours later at night, Richard is filling the car at a gas station. He watches as a couple of cruisers drive down the street, he looks down, his cap hiding his face.
He then hears the ringtone of his phone. He takes it out. Movement alert it shows once again in red letters. The image then turns to a satellite location over Jump City until zooming in to the same suburban house. There, the same old man is taking out the garbage. Again melancholy in Richards eyes. He puts the phone away.
He looks to the drugstore where he sees Kory buying supplies for the trip, he smiles.
Inside Kory is wearing a new set of clothes she had just bought. She is currently busy looking at the different bags of food. She then turns to the side noticing the TV on showing a news reporter talking to Roy of all people, he looks happy as he lays over a stretcher.
"Roy, how did you make this brave leap into action?"
"Well, I didn't think" he answers. "I just did what any man would do in this situation, you know? Leapt into action." Kory smiles. "Like you said, it's really, it's the job."
"Well, you should be so proud."
"Thanks… it really didn't even hurt him" he trails as he is carried into an ambulance, still a smile on his face. "Kinda like a bee-sting."
The woman news reporter then turns to the camera. "What a brave firefighter. Doctors tell me Roy is going to be okay, just a flesh wound, a true Jump City hero…"
Kory looks outside where Richard is still filling up the tank looking at her. He realizes she caught him staring and quickly turns around. She lets out a light chuckle. Maybe he isn't all that bad, he was right about Roy after all.
Couple of minutes later, they are back on the route, Richard driving while Kory gazes outside, still thinking about everything that happened on the day, also looking a bit tired.
He looks at her, he must come clean with her if he really wants her trust.. He reaches to his pocket, takes out a small superhero action figure and leaves in front for her to see.
"This is what's all about, that right there is what everybody wants."
She raises ad eyebrow as she looks at the figure. "A toy?"
"Open it up" he gestures with his head.
She reaches forward, grabs it, and opens it up from the middle, dividing it into two. Inside she sees a small black object. She grabs it and takes it out. "It is warm, what is it?"
"A battery."
"A battery?"
He nods. "It's code-named Xenothium. Not your average Duracell." She looks at him. "Its high-output, never runs out."
"What do you mean never?"
"That little thing ever is the first perpetual energy source since the sun."
"So, then your flashlight never runs out of juice?" She jokes.
He chuckles. "It can power a lot more than a flashlight, Kory."
"Really?" He nods. "How much more?"
"A small city…" He looks at her trying to make her understand. "A large submarine… its big." She signals to the little battery on her hands. He nods. "Guy who invented it, is barely out of high-school... Victor Stone. I was assigned with another agent to watch him at a facility, a lab in Gotham. And the other guy, the other agent, is the guy who picked you up this morning... Xavier. A couple of weeks back, I found out... he was gonna sell the Xenothium and kill Victor. So, I got Victor out of there, put him... somewhere safe. I went back for the battery, and Xavier... he set me up. Made it look like I went rogue." He looks at her, a hint of emotion on his eyes. "That's when I met you." He lets out a small smile. She matches it.
Silence, both enjoying this little moment.
"So… that is… what is next? I mean what is the plan?"
"I think we get some rest, pick up Victor, and get you back to your sister's wedding... I'm pretty good at what I do, Kory" he says trying to reassure her. "Tonight…we are safe."
"Safe and secure?" She jokes. He smiles and nods. She then leans back into the seat, setting her head to the side in a sleeping position. "Good night, Richard." She closes her eyes.
He smiles and looks forward at the way ahead. They had survived today, but they may not be as lucky moving forward.
