Adopted - Part 1
My name is Emily Marie Davenport, and I am 13 years old. I have brunette shoulder length hair, gray eyes, and I wear glasses. I was adopted at three years old by a nice couple—Jeff and Mary Porter. I know what you're probably thinking. Where are my biological parents, and are they in the picture? The answer is no. Let me explain: when I was just two years old, my dad got assigned to help on a government research project. My mom wasn't happy that she was going to have to take care of me all alone. Don't get me wrong. She loved me a lot. So much that she thought it would be best for me to grow up with two parents.
Months later, she found a couple who wanted to adopt and set up an interview. To keep a long story short, I was adopted 10 ten days after my third birthday. Now, I am happily living with two people who love and care for me… not that my biological parents didn't, but still. Now that I've introduced myself and you know a little bit about me, I can get on with the rest of my story.
One hot, bright sunny day in Mission Creek, California, I was sitting at my computer in my room. I was just videochatting with my friend, Rebecca Welder.
"So, I was wondering if you would like to join me at the beach today."
"I would love to. I'll just ask my parents."
"Oh, they can come too. My parents can't join us, though. They'll drop me off at your house."
"Sounds good."
"All right. Well, maybe I'll see you later."
"Okay."
"Bye."
"Bye." The videochat ended and I closed the software. I spun my chair away from my computer.
Just then, my mom knocked and then came in carrying a laundry basket with clothes in it. "Hey, sweetie."
I looked up. "Hi, Mom. I was wondering if we could maybe go to the beach today. I just chatted with Rebecca, and she invited us."
She set the basket on my bed. "That sounds like a wonderful idea."
"Her parents won't be joining us. They'll drop her off here, though."
"Okay. Well, tell her that we'd love to go."
I spun around and grabbed my phone off my desk. I then faced my mom again and texted Rebecca.
We can come.
She texted back.
Awesome! See you soon! ️
I looked up. "Okay. She said she'd see us soon."
"Great. Get changed, I'll go get your dad, and then we can go."
10 minutes later, we were all ready and downstairs when Rebecca opened the front door and walked in. "Who's ready for the beach?" She had white sunglasses with black lenses on top of her head. She also had on a black floral bikini top with blue, yellow, and red flowers, blue jean shorts, and brown flip flops. A tan beach bag was hanging on her left shoulder.
"Hi, Rebecca."
"Hey, Em."
My mom said, "Rebecca, thank you for inviting us to the beach."
"No problem. Like I told Emily, my parents can't join us… but they dropped me off."
"Well, it's too bad they'll be missing out on this beautiful day." She slung her beach bag on her left shoulder. "Come on. We wanna go now so we can get a spot." With that said, we all went out the door and left.
When we got to the beach and set up our spot, Rebecca and I set our stuff down. We took off our shorts and sandals. "Come on, Em! Let's go!" We started running towards the ocean when my mom stopped us.
"Not so fast you two!" We stopped dead in our tracks and turned to face her. "You can go swimming. Just stay where we can see you. Got it?"
"Sure, Mom. We won't go far." Rebecca and I nodded to each other before running off again. We ran straight into the water and stopped when it was at our shins. "This is awesome!"
"You got that right. I love the beach." She held her arms out to her sides and spun around. "Man, I wish I could come here every day."
I shrugged my shoulders. "I guess that would be nice."
"You guess?" I nodded and she playfully shoved me. I fell down and smiled mischievously at her before pulling her down with me. We burst into laughter as we splashed each other.
After we calmed down enough, I said, "I'm glad you invited me, Rebecca."
"Well, of course, Em. You're my best friend. I'd do anything for you. I love you."
I giggled. "I love you too, Rebecca." We both stood up and hugged. "I'll be right back. I gotta go get something." I ran out of the water and jogged over to our spot.
My parents were relaxing—my mom sitting in a chair reading, and my dad laying on a towel. I reached into my beach bag and found what I was looking for. My mom looked up at me and smiled. "Hi, sweetheart."
"Hey, Mom." I opened the tube of sunscreen and squeezed some out into my right hand.
"Do you need some help?"
"No, I got it." I started rubbing some onto my left shoulder. Then I squeezed some onto my left hand and rubbed it onto my right shoulder. I then did the rest of my arms, the fronts and backs of my legs, and my stomach. My mom helped me with my back.
I heard Rebecca yell my name. I looked up and saw her waving. "Come on, Em! You coming back or what?!"
"Be right there, Becca!"
"You're done, sweetheart. Go have fun."
"Thanks, Mom." I kissed her cheek and then ran back towards where Rebecca was.
Rebecca and I were having fun laughing and splashing each other when I saw something. I had a look of panic on my face. "Becca, don't panic, but it looks like there's someone trying to make his way towards us."
She turned around and looked. "You're right, Em. Maybe he's in trouble. We should go and help."
She started to swim, but I grabbed her arm. "But, Becca, we don't know him."
"He may need our help. Come on." She swam off.
I tried to protest. "Rebecca, Rebecc–" My protest didn't work as she started swimming towards the man. I sighed and went to follow her.
As I got closer, I heard, "Excuse me, sir. Do you need help?"
I swam up to her and said, "Rebecca, I don't think this is such a good idea."
She turned her head and looked at me. "Come on, Emily. Don't be rude."
I bit my bottom lip and thought hard about this. "All right, fine. May we help you?"
The man had white skin, black hair, and brown eyes. "Yes, you can. I'm looking for an Emily Davenport."
Suddenly, I got nervous. "T-That's me."
"Look, I know we just met and that you don't know me… but my name's Donald Davenport, and I'm your father."
Rebecca and I looked at each other in confusion.
