Decisions

I was lying on my bed. My back was against my pillows and my knees were bent so that my so laptop was resting against my thighs. I was chatting with Rebecca. "I don't know, Rebecca. This all just sounds so sudden."

"Come on, Em. Your dad asked you to move in with him."

"I know… but I've only known the guy a week. There's still so much to think about."

"Well… what did your adoptive parents say?"

I shrugged my shoulders. "They're fine with it. They said that if it's something I really wanna do, they'll be okay."

"So, are you gonna do it?"

"Yes. I'm excited. I mean, I will miss the people who raised me for 10 years… but I'm excited for this new adventure."

"That's great! So, when's the big moving day?"

"I don't know yet. I gotta get everything ready and–" I was interrupted by a knock at my door. I looked over and saw my dad in my doorway. I looked back at Rebecca. "Rebecca, I gotta go. My dad's here."

"Okay, Em. Let me know what happens."

"I will. Bye."

"Bye, Em."

I closed my laptop and put it off to the side. "Hi, Daddy."

"Hi." He came in and sat on my bed with me. "Rebecca sounds like she's a really good friend."

"She is. She's really happy for me."

"I bet. Listen, I know I blindsided you last week… and I'm sorry for that."

"It's okay."

"I just want you to know that I've been thinking about you ever since I left 11 years ago."

"You have?"

He nodded. "Mmm-hmm."

"Well, if I'm being honest… I never stopped thinking about you either."

"Really?"

I nodded. "Yes. Which is why this'll be good for me. We both get to know each other while we have fun together. It's a win-win."

"Ahh, that's some smart thinking right there. That's my girl." He gave me a side hug.

"Besides, you said I'll have other people to meet?"

"Oh, yeah. My wife, Tasha, and my stepson, Leo. There's also my three adoptive kids, Adam, Bree, and Chase. They are gonna love you."

"Makes me even more excited. I can't wait to meet them."

"Well, I can't wait for you to move in and meet everybody."

"Well, you might have to wait a little longer." I looked around my room. "I have a lot of stuff."

"No problem. I can help. After all, that's what fathers are for." He poked my nose and I giggled.

"Thank you." I looked around my room again. "God, it'll take us at least a week or two to gather all my stuff." I groaned and flopped onto my back. "I have too much."

My dad laughed. "Don't worry. Between you, me, and your adoptive parents, it'll go faster."

I sat up on my elbows. "Really?"

He nodded. "Mmm-hmm. Like I said, that's what a parent is supposed to do."

"Well, when you put like that…" I nodded. "Okay, let's get started."

To say that I had a lot of stuff was an understatement. It really would take us a week to get all my things sorted and move out of my adoptive parents' house. Even though the thought of moving and leaving them sounds a little scary… I'm excited to embrace what's ahead of me.
