This is an early episode so I thought the girls realising HB has feelings would shock them. Enjoy soft HB and Mildred.
Strange Things Happen On Halloween
Mildred stood nervously playing with her hands as HB dismissed the class. Constance picked up the eraser and started to erase the blackboard, before she spoke.
"How may I help you Mildred?" Constance suddenly asked, still with her back to her. Mildred sighed, she should have known, she swore HB was psychic.
"I just...about the display tonight...I was wondering if...someone else could play Lucy instead" Mildred asked. Constance turned around, wiping chalk of her hands before she walked to Mildred.
"You got the part fair and square" HB told her, using the softer tone she had taken up the last few days. She saw the girl looked quite pale as she spoke.
"You are just nervous, that is normal" Constance said trying to reassure her.
"I don't want to mess up Miss...please give the part to a better flyer like Ethel" Mildred replied feeling sick to her stomach.
"You have practised hard Mildred, you know exactly what you need to do, plus Miss Cackle is always saying I should give you a fair chance" Constance replied, refusing Mildred's request.
"I didn't know Miss Cackle's opinion was so important to you Miss" Mildred commented. She knew they were close but she always assumed it was because they worked together.
"Mildred Hubble, the truth of the matter is that, Miss Cackle's opinion is the only one important to me" Constance admitted. "And we don't want to upset her do we?" Constance said glaring at her before she touched her shoulder gently. "You will be fine Mildred, and there will be no part swapping" Constance stated. Mildred looked at her teacher, trying to feel confident.
"Did she let you switch Millie?" Maud asked as she emerged. Mildred shook her head.
"No, she said I have to do it" Mildred replied.
"You will be great!" Ruby said
"The best!" Jadu encouraged.
"Yes...but you will never guess what I found out" Mildred stated.
"Tell us!" Ruby asked.
"HB cares about Miss Cackle's opinion" Mildred revealed.
"Obviously she is her boss" Jadu replied.
"No...I mean as a friend, you should have seen the look she gave me when she spoke about upsetting Cackle, as if she was thinking of turning me into a cockroach if I tried" Mildred told them.
"HB cares about someone and doesn't just tolerate them? Extreme!" Maud replied smiling.
"They do say strange things happen at Halloween" Jadu said.
"Yes, and Hardbroom being capable of feeling emotions other than anger has to be the strangest one!" Maud said giggling.
Mildred smiled as she walked down the corridor with her friends. Confidence and Control, she told herself. She could do this. She felt slightly less nervous after her talk with HB as she believed she could do it.
