They unload the boxes for Obito to move in together with Kakashi.

Kakashi opened the bedroom door to find Obito crouched in the floor, in serious conversation with his dogs.

"Alright, I'm moving in now. You guys gotta respect me. I'm the new alpha around here, ok? You obey to Kakashi and me, I'm not in the bottom of your food chain anymore, ok? I'm on the top, with Kakashi. Do you understand?" He whispered in a threatening tone to the kids.

All his dogs looked to be seriously enthralled with whatever it was that Obito was blabbering about and Kakashi had to hold his laughter inside not to disturb the scene in front of him.

"No more sleeping in our bed. No more gnawing on my books like toys. No more stealing my socks. I don't give a flying fuck if you're all jealous that your owner got a boyfriend. You have to deal with me now. I'm the boss now." Obito puffed out his chest as well as he could in his crouched position, trying to assert dominance.

Kakashi couldn't hold it inside anymore and doubled on himself in laughter. Some of the dogs started barking at the sound and Obito looked offended at them having the guts to bark.

Obito turned around to look at him with a panicked expression in his face. "What are you doing here?"

"What are you doing? You think you can become the alpha with some pep talk?" Kakashi managed to ask in between his fits of laughter.

Obito groaned with annoyance and his shoulders slumped. "I can believe you heard that!"

"The problems of living together, my love. Remember, it was you who asked me for us to move in together."

Obito got up to his feet and kissed Kakashi lightly on the lips, a resigned look on his face. "I know it's just… I think your dogs are jealous of me."

"What? Of course not, they respect you." Kakashi rebutted that immediately.

"No. They don't. They're always mocking me. Destroying my books, stealing my socks, besides, they don't listen to the commands when I say it, only when you say it." Obito complained like the jealous boyfriend he was. Before they started dating Kakashi would never guess he was the type to get jealous at Kakashi's pets.

"Oh babe, don't let that get you down. Dogs are territorial, from now on you'll establish your territory too, your scent will be all over the house. Eventually they'll come around." He tried to argue logically, patting Obito's back in a soothing way.

"I can't believe I'm a second-class citizen at my own home." Obito groaned again, but Kakashi could only shrug at that.

"It was their home before it became yours."

"Kakashi, my love, my darling, I love you, but sometimes you gotta be on my side too, not only defending your dogs." Obito put his hands on his hips just like Kushina did, sounding annoyed.

Kakashi decided to mock him even more. Just because. "I'll do that when you start being right. Still hasn't happened."

"Bastard." Obito's eyes narrowed at him and Kakshi laughed harder.

"C'mon, there're still some boxes in the front yard." Kakashi held Obito's hand in his and guided them back to the front.

They moved the last three boxes inside and started opening them to look what was inside.

"You have more books than clothes. And furniture. And everything else really." Kakashi half stated, half complained as they started taking more and more books out of the box and dusting them off. He didn't have much shelf space, maybe they would need to get a new one.

"Some of us read actual books." Obito said in that superior mocking tone that Kakashi hated.

"Obito if you keep saying bad things about my choice of reading material, you're sleeping in the couch, with the dogs." Kakashi threatened, but Obito didn't seem to take it seriously and only laughed.

"Sorry love, I won't make fun of you anymore, promise."

"What is so great about these books anyway? Look at this one! I can't even pronounce this guy's name!" Kakashi showed it to Obito, pointing at the author's name in the cover, and Obito just shrugged as if it was fucking obvious.

"It's Dostoevsky, babe."

Kakashi was fuming. Stuck up pretentious asshole. "Not helpful, babe. Still unpronounceable."

"C'mon it's a classic."

Why was he the one getting made fun of? Kakashi put the book down in a new pile on the floor with more force than he should have. "I swear to god. You're a goddamn ex-convict punk singer, why do you read this stuff?"

"It might sound funny, but I picked up a habit when I was in jail." Obito stated simply and Kakashi's ears perked up at that.

"Wait, really?"

"Yeah, down at max we didn't get many chances to get out of the cell, but if I used the library as an excuse, I was allowed to get out much more. So I went to the fucking library. It's impressive how anything sounds exciting when you're bored to death from staring at the same 2m by 2m white ceiling all day."

Obito was laughing while recounting this story, but as it happened often, Kakashi didn't think this was a laughing matter at all. "Can't imagine how that feels like."

"And I wasn't even locked up that long. Imagine people who are in for life, those guys must go crazy." Obito visibly shivered at just contemplating that possibility and Kakashi was a bit irked at it too. After all, it almost became true for Obito.

"True."

"Do you think maybe we have space in these drawers?" Obito pointed at some drawers Kakashi never used. Most of his stuff was in his bedroom, he had no use for things on the living room.

"Sure, I don't even remember what's in them." Kakashi shrugged and got to dusting – surprise! – yet another fucking book while Obito rummaged through the stuff in the drawer. Kakashi put it down and picked another cursed Russian book, maybe this would be a great opportunity for him to get rid of any trash he hadn't used in the last years. Donate some stuff to charity too.

"Wow." Obito sounded dazed and Kakashi raised his eyes to see him going through a photo album. Oh. So that's what was inside the drawers, no wonder he never opened them.

"What is it?" He got closer to Obito to see what he was looking at.

"Just. Wow." It was a picture of his father. He was holding a five year old looking Kakashi in his arm, he must have been around thirty five or a bit older by then. The similarity with his own face was uncanny, he know it was that that surprised Obito.

"I know."

"You really look alike." Obito repeated and Kakashi tried not to get any negative feelings from the comment. This had always been an issue to him, but it was about time he started working on being happy that he looked like his father. He always thought he was a handsome person, and that he looked very reliable.

"I know." He repeated simply, trying to sound neutral.

"It's almost like you grew out of him like a third arm or something and then just fell out." Obito said still in a daze, but it felt like he was teasing Kakashi.

"No need to be an idiot about it!"

"Sorry, babe!" Obito broke his stare on the page and Though you have something he doesn't. Right. Here."

"You like it?"

"I love it. I wanna kiss it."

"You're so silly!"

"But he has dimples too! On the same side as you, that's cute."

"C'mon stop with the questions and help me with your damned books."

"You're right sorry." Obito laughed and put the album back in the drawer, tidying everything up neatly to give his books some space. "Though I'd like to go through them later. Would you be ok with that?"

Kakashi wondered. Would he? His family has always been a touchy subject, but he and Obito were going through all the list of uncomfortable things to discuss. And surprisingly, it was helping Kakashi to heal a bit too. He felt like he was always picking at an old wound and never letting it heal completely. But talking about them to Obito made him feel not as itchy about it, and got them out of his mind a bit, and with that, he finally felt like he could start leaving some baggage behind, but still visit them when necessary.

It helped a lot that Obito always made him feel comfortable, was very respectful, and never pressed Kakashi for more than he was willing to give. He was great at consoling him too. And the fact that he deposited the same trust back on Kakashi in return made everything perfect.

"Sure. I'll show you the rest of the albums too."

"Fuuuuuck, little baby Kakashi pictures! So cute!" Obito squealed while putting away more of his books inside the drawers, and Kakashi couldn't help but smile.

Yes. They were healing. Little by little, slow and steady.

After a few more rounds of dusting and sort more books, all cardboard boxes were empty and the dogs were already gnawing at them, tearing them away, and just creating a huge mess. Children are a blessing. The whole move thing went on only up to midafternoon, it was faster than he'd imagined.

"Is that all?" He checked with Obito if he hadn't forgotten anything else.

"Yeah, I don't have a lot of stuff."

"I noticed. It's just that with you being such a nerd I thought you'd have some more collections, besides the tons of paperbacks." Kakashi teased and Obito groaned in return.

"It's not that I'm a nerd Kakashi, it's you that have trash taste in almost everything, I thought we had established that."

"I thought you'd have a rare books collection, or a vinyl collection hidden somewhere." Kakashi explained his point, not bothering to deny his trash taste. He was very happy with it. It was Obito's choice if he wanted to suffer reading sad books, watching sad movies and listening to sad music.

"Oh this reminds me!" Obito laid on the couch and fished his phone out of his pocket, and Kakashi heard that little noise the sound box does when a Bluetooth connection happened. "I promised your father to make you listen to some jazz."

"I know, but… I already know I won't like it." Kakashi sighed a bit.

"How do you know?" Obito cocked his head and raised an eyebrow, like some mother trying to get the kids to eat their vegetables.

Kakashi sighed again. Maybe he really was too trashy to get high level art. "I remember my father listening to it. It's complex, and hard, and doesn't make sense."

"Well, you're not wrong. But still, a promise is a promise. Come, sit here and be pretty for me while we listen to John Coltrane."

"Just his name is already pretentious." Kakashi complained but seated beside Obito anyway.

A fast tune started playing, it had some consistent rhythm in the beginning, but then the trumpets or whatever horns it was started playing and the whole song started moving in a completely different direction. He was already lost, and he didn't understand how someone who didn't understand in depth musical theory like his father could enjoy this. Maybe Obito knew what was happening from his slight background in music, but not Kakashi.

Obito was looking at him expectantly and Kakashi just hoped he wasn't making too much of a disgusted face.

"So…" He tried to start, but he didn't have anything nice to say.

"So?" Obito echoed expectantly, like an excited puppy.

"It's kind of…"

"Kind of?"

"Busy?"

"Busy?"

"Yes?" Kakashi concluded his articulate analysis.

"I knew it. You don't like it." Obito raised his head and hands up to the sky dramatically. "Hatake-san! I have failed you! Your son has too much trash taste! It's irreversible!"

"Shut up you idiot!" Kakashi shoved Obito's shoulder, but it didn't deter his boyfriend.

"He's in terminal phase! The trash has consumed him! He's become one with the trash now!"

"Asshole!" Kakashi threw a cushion in Obito's face.

"I'm just kidding. I love you!" Obito did a heart with his fingers and Kakashi rolled his eyes at his silliness.

"I hate you."

"Alright, let's try something different, this was too advanced for you."

"Hey! Don't talk about me like I am a child!" Kakashi said defensively. There were plenty of people who didn't understand jazz. People who did were the freaks.

"It's not my fault if you have childish tastes. Alright, how about some Duke Ellington?"

Another song started to play, much calmer than before. This one was so different, Kakashi could hardly believe it was the same musical genre. It was soulful and beautiful and melodic and soothing and he could feel it. The longing, the loving, whatever it was that the composer had in mind when he wrote this song. To his surprised, he loved it.

"Oh, this one is better?" Obito must have noticed his change in demeanor.

"It's beautiful." Kakashi continued to stare at the sound box as if trying to understand why he liked this so much.

"Wanna dance?" Obito asked suddenly.

"What?"

"C'mon." Obito got up and pulled Kakashi's hand in his. He slowly helped Kakashi to his feet too, looking at their intertwined fingers, then he slowly started swaying to the rhythm of the song, resting his hands on Kakashi's waist, and he reflexively let his arms rest around Obito's strong shoulders.

They swayed in the living room, looking like a ridiculous couple in love. Which they were. Letting their weight rest in one foot, then the other, turning around slowly, that relaxing music making its way to his heart, and Kakashi wondered if there could ever be such a perfect moment in his life.

"What's the name of the song?" He asked in a barely audible whisper.

"Jeep's blues." Obito whispered back, as if he too, was afraid of breaking the spell of the moment.

"I like it."

"I think your father would have liked it too."

Kakashi's heart swelled with love. There was a reason why Obito was doing this, it wasn't to force his superior taste in Kakashi. It was to try to help him reconnect with his father. "Thanks, Obito."

"No problems love."

Kakashi sighed. Obito didn't get how fucking grateful Kakashi was. He could never repay the other man. "I mean it. I don't know what I would do without you in my life."

"Me neither. It's a good thing you'll never have to find out." Obito, as he always did, made everything simple and direct and easy. No need to wonder about terrible things. He was promising to stay together with Kakashi forever.

"Thanks."

"You're stuck with me you know?"

"I love you."

"I love you too."

I'm not one to use songs in my fanfics, but I don't know, Jeep's Blues is so romantic, I recommend you listening to it to set the mood for the last scene, though I tried to make it work without it too.

(I'm a huge movie and music nerd too, you might have noticed me sprinkling some of my favorites around the story)

I just love these characters so much and I want them to be happy!
