Race To Their Hearts

Helen raced down the hallway, delivering paperwork where it needed to go. No one was in the hallways at the moment as there were meetings going on and it was her day off, but she was bored and wanted something to do, so she came up to Plumber HQ to volunteer her time.

Just then, she zipped around the corner and saw Rachel and Rook coming up the hallway. "Whoa!" Helen cried out in warning as she skid to a stop. Both the Magister and his wife-to-be stopped in surprise and watched Helen trip and do a somersault on the ground, sliding to a stop on her back.

"Oh, my goodness!" Rachel exclaimed in shock, running up to her. "Helen, are you alright, hon?"

The Kineceleran groaned as she felt dizzy. "Hold on," Rook said, carefully lifting Helen up into his arms as if she was a child and he and Rachel took her to the lounge, the young woman getting Helen some water.

As the dizziness went away, Helen's face turned a bit red. "Sorry about that, Magister Blonko, Miss Rachel," she said apologetically.

"It's alright, hon," Rachel said. "But where were you rushing off to?"

"And isn't it your day off?" Rook asked with a knowing smile.

Helen looked sheepish. "Alright, you caught me," she said. "I was bored at home and so decided to volunteer today. Besides, most everyone's in meetings and there was paperwork to be delivered."

Rachel smiled. "You're a dedicated Plumber, hon, but a day off means no working," she said gently.

"And no sneaking in here to volunteer work either," Rook said, but his tone was gentle.

"But sir, it's really no trouble to me," Helen protested lightly.

"I know, Helen, but Plumber HQ isn't going to drown in paperwork in one day," the Revonnahgander said jokingly.

"Careful, hon. Last time Magister Tennyson said that, the copy machines went crazy and this place was literally packed with paper from the floor almost up to the ceiling," Rachel said.

Helen giggled, having heard the story from Alan. "Oh, man, Alan told me about that," she said. "Did they find out what happened to make the copy machines to act like that?"

"Yeah," the young woman said. "Upgrade was testing some of Blukic and Driba's invisible hover items and the hovershoes malfunctioned, sending Upgrade onto a crazy, dizzying chase that had him crash so hard into the main copy machine that it malfunctioned and caused the papers to go flying."

Rook chuckled. "That was quite a mess," He agreed. "I think it took the whole day and all of the Plumbers here to clean it up."

Rachel giggled. "We had to make paths just to be able to move and start the clean up," she said. "Good thing there were a lot of Plumbers there at the time. That cleanup could have taken a lot longer."

"True," her husband-to-be said with a smile.

Helen smiled and noticed how Magister Blonko hugged his wife-to-be so lovingly and Rachel gazed at her man tenderly. Their love story had spread throughout the galaxies, as had Rachel's reputation for helping any aliens or humans needing refuge, the Grant Mansion's reputation reaching even where the Celestialsapiens resided.

"Hey, Miss Rachel?" Helen asked.

"Yes, hon?" Rachel replied, looking at her.

"How did you know Magister Blonko was the one for you? And how did you know that the people you've matched together were the ones for each other?"

The young woman smiled. "I look for the signs," she said. "Certain things that are sure-fire indicators that two people are meant for each other."

She turned to look at her husband-to-be. "As to how I knew Rook was the one for me, well...I didn't know right away," she admitted. "I had my heart under heavy guard after it had been broken by a cheating, abusive ex-boyfriend."

Rook gently cupped her face. "I couldn't believe that some boy was so mean to you, my love," he said. "And that he had let go of you so easily."

She smiled and looked at Helen. "As Rook and I spent more time together, the walls around my heart came down and he helped break the stubborn ones down until one day, he asked me to be his girlfriend."

"I was worried you'd say 'no'," Rook admitted. "But hoping you'd say 'yes' because I had fallen for you."

Rachel giggled. "I did, after that mind-blowing kiss you had given me," she said. "You sure you didn't use some spell on me?"

She said the last part teasingly, so Rook knew she was only joking. "Only the spell of love, Baby," he said in a flirting tone, making her blush and laugh as she realized he had turned that back around on her.

Helen managed to hide her own giggles as she also realized what Rook had done. "You guys really are made for each other," she said.

"Thanks," Rachel said before looking up at Rook again. "And then, not long after, he proposed to me after he bought the Grant Mansion for our friends. That told me that he was a man who cared about the same things I did and would always be there for me."

He smiled. "And you said 'yes', making me the happiest man alive," he said. "And now look where we are. Our house and the Jocklin Mansion are full of our friends and couples, we have many nieces and nephews, and we ourselves are blessed with four children."

Helen smiled again. "I hope I one day have a love story like you guys and the others you've matched up," she said.

"I'm sure you will," Rachel said, smiling. "If there is one thing that nearly eight years of living with aliens has taught me, both friendship and love happen when you least expect it."

"That is true," Rook said before scooping up his lady into his arms, making her laugh. "Pardon us, Helen. I owe my lady a date after I've been gone for nearly a month on missions."

"Sure thing," she said. "Enjoy."

As the two left, Helen turned to walk away but stopped short at seeing another Kineceleran walking nearby. It was a male and he turned to look at her as if sensing she was watching him. As her eyes met his eyes, Helen gasped softly before feeling something strange come over her.

Blinking for a moment, she continued to gaze at the male Kineceleran, who suddenly seemed shy and turned away, his face red. "Who's that?" She asked herself curiously before the intercom startled her and she went on her way.

Rachel, who had been watching this over Rook's shoulder, grew thoughtful. "Hmm," she hummed, a knowing smiling coming to her face.

"What is it, my love?" Rook asked.

"Well, I'm not overly sure yet, but I think our Helen just might have started down the path to love."

"Oh?" He asked curiously before smiling. "Observe?"

"Observe," she agreed. "But first."

She turned his head to her and kissed him, making him smile as down the hallway, Helen couldn't help thinking about the male Kineceleran she had seen.

Could Helen be falling in love? We shall see.
