The Gathering Storm 0.1

Kamina's POV

The world around me shuddered, violent tremors shaking the earth as if it were Simon trying to talk to a girl. The ground heaved underfoot, and with a deafening roar, a mountain of fire erupted in the distance. Molten debris rained down like fiery spears, burning streaks across the battlefield. My vision swam, blurring under the overwhelming strain of pain coursing through my body, the giant wound in my side pulsing with every heartbeat. I could feel the warmth of my blood, slick and hot, pouring from the gash, soaking into the cracked earth beneath me.

Simon's voice, raw and desperate, cut through the haze—faint but unmistakable. "Aniki! Kamina!" His cries grew more distant with each passing second, as though I were being dragged away into the void. No... No! I wasn't done yet!

Pain spiked through my chest, a fire that burned deeper than the volcano behind us. The sharp tang of iron filled my mouth as blood mixed with the gritty residue of dirt and ash. I coughed, the metallic taste coating my tongue. Was this it? Was this how I'd go out? Lying in the dirt, staring up at the sky we'd fought so hard to reach? Not like this. Not with the Spiral King still out there. Not while our people were still trapped underground, waiting for salvation. Not while the heavens themselves still needed breaking.

My muscles screamed in agony as I forced myself to look around. The battlefield was a hellscape of fire and ruin, the sky a roiling blanket of smoke. My comrades—my friends—stood scattered among the chaos, their faces twisted with fear, worry, hope. I could see it in their eyes. They believed in me. Damn it, how could I let them down now? How could I just lie here, bleeding out, while they were still standing?

But the truth hit me harder than any enemy ever had. I wouldn't be there to see it. My fight was over. My story, at least this chapter, was closing. Simon, though… Simon could take it from here. I'd trained him, taught him everything he needed. He wasn't that scared little kid hiding behind me anymore. He could stand on his own two feet, even when I couldn't.

Darkness crawled at the edges of my vision, cold and absolute. The pain dulled, becoming something distant, almost forgotten. It was as if the weight of my body was disappearing, slipping away like sand through my fingers. I felt light, like I was floating… untethered from the world. Was this it, then? Was this death? Drifting around like a feather in the wind, or a kid floating in a bath? What a lousy way to go. I thought I'd at least go out with a bang, not... this.

But just as the void started to close in, an intense, blinding light shattered the darkness. It wasn't just bright—it was pure, searing, like staring directly into the sun but without the burn. It was overwhelming, yet strangely comforting. I landed hard—no, not hard. I expected the crunch of bone against earth, but instead, the ground felt warm, solid, and… soft? Like I'd fallen onto light itself. I blinked, squinting against the white brilliance as I tried to make sense of what the hell was going on.

"Welcome, Kamina," a voice echoed from nowhere, deep and reverberating, like it was coming from every direction at once.

My head whipped around, trying to pinpoint the source. The light shifted, and I could just make out a figure—no, a silhouette. It was my height, my general shape, but made of nothing. A blank slate, just an outline of a guy. The voice that followed was like a chorus of voices layered on top of each other, some sounding familiar. "You have fought valiantly, but your journey ends here."

I felt my blood boil. My hands clenched into fists, the ache of my wounds momentarily forgotten. "Who the hell are you?" I spat, forcing the words through gritted teeth. My spirit flared, defiance roaring back to life like a flame rekindled. "I ain't done! You hear me?!"

The thing—it laughed, a sound that sent chills crawling up my spine, if I even still had one. The laughter was sharp, mocking. "Who am I?" it said, almost playfully, as if my question was some kind of joke. "One name you might have for me is The World, or perhaps The Universe, or God, or maybe The Truth." Its hand raised slowly, and it pointed directly at me. "I am all, and I am one. Which means, of course, I am also you."

That hit like a hammer. God? This thing was claiming to be God? The nerve of this guy! My mind raced, disbelief and anger boiling over. "God, huh?" I scoffed, fire rising in my chest again. "Well, you're doin' a real shit job of it!" My voice rose, carrying the full weight of my frustration. "And you sure as hell ain't me!" I marched toward the figure, my fists shaking with rage. "You let people rot underground! You sit back while we have to fight tooth and nail to survive! What kind of God are you, huh?! Who the hell needs ya?!"

My Spiral Will flared, that familiar green energy swirling around me, coiling like a serpent. I gripped the hilt of my sword, now draped over my shoulders, the weight comforting in my hands. "I'm Kamina, leader of Team Gurren, and I ain't taking orders from anyone! Not even some half-assed 'God!'"

Before the thing could respond, I lunged forward, swinging my fist right at its smug, nonexistent face. My knuckles connected with a satisfying crack, sending the figure flying backward, tumbling through the endless white space. For a second, everything went still. Then, the silence broke with the sound of laughter—loud, deep, and genuine. The figure rolled, doubled over, laughing harder than I'd ever seen anyone laugh.

"You… really?" it choked out between fits of laughter. "You, Kamina?!" It straightened up, wiping invisible tears from its invisible face. "You're the first one to really get it."

I crossed my arms, watching the thing with narrowed eyes. "Get what?"

The figure's tone softened, becoming almost... proud. "Humans don't need a god. They don't need divine intervention. I gave you free will for a reason, and you've shown why. You grit your teeth, and you get things done yourselves. You—" It pointed at me again, a sly grin forming on its blank face. "You exemplify it in every way."

I smirked, crossing my arms. "Damn right I do. So what do you want from me?"

Its expression turned thoughtful. "You're dead, Kamina. Even you can grasp that, right? But... you don't have to stay dead."

My brows furrowed. "Huh?"

"You can't go back to your world," it explained, almost as if it was trying to keep things simple for me. "Them's the rules. But there are other worlds—many like yours. And one of them might just need someone like you."

The blinding light began to fade, replaced by endless blue skies and water stretching as far as the eye could see. The ocean.

I blinked, a little thrown off. "So… you want me to go swimming or something?"

The figure rolled its eyes. "No, idiot. I want you to take the place of someone who just drowned. A boy with a destiny. But the universe is unpredictable, and now, that destiny needs filling."

I raised an eyebrow. "You want me to be someone else?"

"Not just someone else," the figure corrected. "Someone meant for greatness. Assemble a crew, sail the seas, and claim a grand treasure." It paused. "You want adventure, don't you?"

I considered it. Sure, I didn't know the first thing about the ocean, but adventure? A new challenge? That I could handle. Anything was better than floating in the void for eternity.

I cracked my knuckles, grinning wide. "Fine. Destiny's calling, and Team Gurren's leader never turns down a challenge."

"Good. Then eat this."

I caught what it threw at me, a strange, wrinkled fruit. It tasted like salt and leather... but somehow, it made me wanna laugh.
